05:07 Sauna research indicates that when your heartrate is about 140, you are in the right temperature for cardiovascular benefit and releasing heat shock proteins.
08:19 With age comes senescent cell accumulation; cells that do not perform their essential functions, do not self-destruct and effect surrounding cells.
09:06 If you can get rid of senescent cells in your body, you get a 10 or 20% life extension.
10:50 A senescent cell intervention study caused most senescent cells to go away.
15:30 Autophagy has a senolytic effect.
16:32 If there is low autophagy activation in the body, lifespan is shorter.
19:10 DNA expresses itself differently when autophagy is upregulated.
20:30 Stem cell activation increases in the refeeding stage after a fasted state.
22:15 In mice, it takes at least a 2-day water fast to induce autophagy.
26:30 If there are a lot of nutrients in the environment, cells grow and procreate. In cancer, this is not a good thing.
27:10 If there are no nutrients in the environment, cells get good at recycling/scavenging and hunkers down to protect its DNA so it cannot break.
28:44 The antioxidant theory of ageing has been debunked.
30:33 A constant feeding state stimulates cancer growth through upregulation of growth hormone IGF1 and insulin.
33:36 Testing can show where patients are on the longevity path.
36:24 Overconsuming protein by over 20 to 30% in your diet, you get increased IGF-1.
37:39 A good IGF-1 level, based on Blue Zone cultures, is around 150 for mid-life.
42:14 If you restrict methionine in mice, they live longer.
46:05 AMPK can be activated through Metformin, berberine or the Chinese herb jiaogulan.
48:02 Rapamycin works well to suppress TOR in animal models.
51:22 NAD is the rocket fuel needed for sirtuins to do their job to protect DNA. Fasting increases NAD.
56:17 We don’t know if taking NAD increases lifespan or if it lowers cardio-metabolic risk.
01:00:35 Your DNA gets methylated as you age. When DNA is methylated, certain sections of DNA code are turned off and your cell does not do what it is supposed to do.
01:02:50 CPG sections of DNA are highly correlated with the ageing process, if they are methylated. It is a better marker for ageing than telomeres.
01:03:59 When your DNA at the CPG sites is methylated, it is irrevocable.
01:04:40 Ageing tests, from Elysium and myDNAge examine CPG sites.
01:08:35 The DNA clock was reversed by 2 ½ years.
01:13:07 Paradoxically, studies show that increases in growth hormone leads to longevity benefits, yet high growth hormone is disaster from a longevity standpoint.
01:17:40 DHEA for men is probably safe with a recommended dosage of 25 to 50 ml. DHEA has a positive effect upon the immune system and helps with certain markers of cardiovascular function in men.
01:21:37 Low levels of DHEA increase your risk of all cause mortality.
01:23:12 Fasting mimicking, to a higher extent than fasting, increases mucosal stem cell activity.

If a drug is strong enough to help you, it's strong enough to hurt you. I just want to be healthy now. For me that means no sugar, no alcohol, no dairy, no wheat, plus intermittent fasting. Also, eat with pleasure and a grateful heart. Spend time in nature. Hope 2020 is a year of "good vision" for the planet and all its inhabitants after recent events.

the last video you did with Jeff is actually one of my favorites of yours, so i had high expectations for this one.
i’m glad to say that it didn’t disappoint ;) .
So kudos to you both. Many thanks!
i’m currently 115lbs (177cm tall) and i want to return to my previous 150..160lbs. It is pretty hard to gain muscle mass doing intermittent fasting, in deed, so i am considering going from 3 meals, to 4 .
that would mean i would have to forgo the 12hour no-food window..
Judging from what you guys talked about, scientific data/confirmation on the benefits of that 12hour window are still pretty scarce.. I didn’t know that. i thought it had been scientifically shown that it really has benefits.
A 2 to 3 days fasting once a month might be a good idea, then, i feel.
Still..i’m currently 4.5% fat..so fasting is very tasking on my muscle tissues..
what do you reckon ?
thanks again Mike,
cheers from Portugal

Amazing video, Jeff is a wonderful and intelligent guy.
I'd really like to see Ted Naiman's response to Jeff regarding protein, would love to see that chat.
Also importantly I'm very curious to know how Jeff, as a thinner guy, approaches the subject of gaining muscle or simply working out, or perhaps he prefers not to thereby having a younger body and mind for longer?
It's really ultra key for keto dieters who are losing muscle mass. There are many recommendations of 2g of protein per kg per day.. but how to fit that in a 4 hour feeding window? The body would have trouble processing 150g+ of protein so muscle gain is extremely difficult. And using a long window we hear time and again over-stimulates mTOR
Do you know of anyone willing to put forward a strategy to balance Protein, mTOR, and muscle growth (or at least prevent muscle wasting) while not overstimulating mTOR / IGF1 which we hear all the time is the big bad move in the longevity game.
For example:
Goals-wise I'm keto for inflammation reduction (it works) and fast for autophagy and I feel great afterwards which leads me to conclude it's also anti-inflammatory. But I've lost my 10kg of fat and I'm losing muscle.. following Naiman's philosophy I should just eat tons of protein.. which is exactly what I had planned until this vid which yet again drove home hard the IGF1 message extremely eloquently.
If feeding window (or the 20 hour fast out of it) is the solution then is there a way to consume 150g in 4 hours without the body just saying "too much protein to process properly let's convert some into glucose and dump a load".
I was thinking 3 day fast (starting keto adapted it's quite intense) at the end of each month to help cleanse the mTOR mess from too much protein during the month. Maybe a 2 day fast mid month also.
Possibly choose a 'big work out' day once a week where I forgo the feed window rule.
Seems quite a 'pulsatile' compromise.. although the 150g a day in a small feed window is the biggest question.. is this wise? Logistically seems possible but idk how the body would process it (apparently body can process 60g after workout.. maybe start: Take 30g protein with keto lunch, then 2h30 later 15g EAA then work out and 60g whey isolate immediately after, then 45g (eg: 150g meat) in a meal after an hour, close window. )
Is this wise or am I messing with IGF-1 and mTOR too much?
Trouble is in a nutshell: I'm 37 and getting old.. keto is perfect to reduce inflammation but I'm losing muscle mass, a solution is high protein a la Naiman but INF-1 and mTOR are so important especially hearing Jeff reiterate and further embue some very wise mTOR lore.
Final idea for discussion:
Feed window on alternate days (eg: 4hr window except 3 training days a week where there is 8hr window where you could have 150g protein starting 30g in the morning workout after 2 hrs then 60g, then 2 hrs 30g 2hrs 30g..
Then next day, the alternate, back to 4 hr window with lower protein (BUT HOW MUCH can you take on a rest day in 4 hours on keto?)
We don't hear so much about a 2 day oscillation detailed in interviews, occasionally though.
This stuff is not for bodybuilding per se, it's so fasters and keto community can stay healthy and avoid muscle loss.. it happens!
Any thoughts? Or links greatly appreciated.
:)

Could you talk about criticisms of the blue zone study? The main one being that it cherry picks these zones. There are other long lived populations that don't eat 10% protein. Hong Kong being an example here. And the other criticism was that some of the zones weren't really plant-based. Okinawa being the most egregious example.
Another thing, Americans don't eat 30% protein. We eat 10-16% protein.

One of the most effective ways to restore or eliminate senescent cells is by replenishing our bodies with stabilized ROS/RNS. They have several roles in the body, one being cellular messengers and our bodies built-in method to detect repair or replace damaged cells.

When they say that a certain percentage of your diet should be made up of protein, are they presuming that you’re eating three meals a day in a standard eating pattern? What if you only eat one meal that day? Is it really a matter of the percentage or the amount, and if it’s the amount, what amount would they say is ideal?

I think the focus on mtor and igf-1 is from a place of not looking at the body as a system. I enjoyed this guy’s perspective and I appreciate that he stressed that they are still important.
Valter Longo annoys me greatly. Fasting is obviously superior to fmd and he focusing on processes that are simply not being utilized by the body correctly. You shouldn’t want to down regulate mtor or reduce igf-1, the goal should be to direct it to metabolically active tissue! Get in a lift in the am or anytime before breaking a fast and you will do just that!
Same with metformin, it’s just doing exactly what your body does after exercise. To me it’s simple, lift before eating and walk after.
Personally the lifting part is easy, the walking I neglect, but I think the lifting is more important in the context of growth factor sequestration.
Enjoyed the discussion as always! Thank you, Mike!

Regarding vitamin C, it looks like you guys are ignoring the fact that a primate the size of a human would make 10 grams of vitamin C and we make none. I'm 71 and haven't had a cold or the flu for over 40 years. All that time I've taken at least 6 grams daily, but often much more. Also, no one ever guesses me to be over 50, so I'm not about to shun C!

He mentions blue zones consuming only 10% protein, but these 'blue zones' have been debunked, not only by researchers but by people who live or have lived in these areas. How long do you think you are gonna live, anyway? If you only eat 10% of calories as protein, you're likely gonna be weak in old age. I don't think 10% protein facilitates 'strongevity'. Otherwise, a wonderful interview and discussion.
