The intestinal barrier serves as a gatekeeper to the human body. The loss of the health and integrity of this barrier influences multiple aspects of human health – including cardiometabolic function, neurological health, behavior, and more – in surprising and possibly unexpected ways. One of these ways involves lipopolysaccharide, or LPS, a bacterial product that arises in the intestine, and its interaction with far distal tissues and organs via the induction of immune mediators.
Dr. Rhonda Patrick was the keynote speaker for the Metabolic Health Summit, held May 5 – 8, 2022, in Santa Barbara, California. Her presentation described the role that intestinal permeability and bacterial products play in aging, inflammation, and chronic disease.

Im a covid Long Hauler with extreme high elevations of pro inflammatory cytokines including TNFa and IL-6. Wonder how much leaky gut plays into why I became a long hauler, and many of my symptoms. We also have very high levels of intermediate monocytes, could this be because they are phagocytozing LPS?

The graphics greatly enhance the presentation. Thank you, Rhonda for adding them to your session. Also, the timeline for the presentation is very useful as your presentations are quite long. It would help all of us viewers if you added recommendations for adjusting life styles, diets, etc. for healthy living and sited in the timeline where those are. Tim Ferris often adds "show notes" after his podcasts to them to enhance the viewer's/listener's experience...Just a thought. Again, thank you.

So does this mean taking fish oil capsules 15 minutes after a meal reduces IP because the Omega 3 destroys the LPS peak at one hour? (or something 😅)?

1. I bet LPS is different depending on gut bacteria, also you can add fiber to a diet and increase inflammation in that person -> some people with good gut bacteria will do fine with a ton of sat fat diet and other people will feel shitty.
2. Omega 3s should be taken from pickled fish , i bet any type of heat will destroy the omega 3s that we need. Same goes to animal meat/fat ( especially bone marrow and brain ) but that's a different story. Also AGE's will go through the roof when you cook meat, i'm pretty sure we need to eat it as raw as possible, just like most choline remains in a very soft cooked egg.
3. I think Dr. Zsofia Clemens is the leading entity when it comes to intestinal permeability and she is the leader of the "group" that uses peg400, she would answer a lot of the questions.

I think it important to try to assess relative nutrient values of particular foods by trying to determine prehistoric evolutionary biologic conditions we have been adapted to over countless thousands of years. Was the beef we ate 30 thousand years ago grass fed, more than grain fed? Seasonality of grazing most likely had cattle eating grass much more than any grain, so we would very likely be better adapted to the complex systems of eating/metabolism of wild grass-eating beef cattle. And since protein poisoning seems to be an important part of how we evolved, prehistoric hunting populations were likely adapted to eating fat beef whenever possible rather than always just eating the leanest cuts of meat. And, eating lots of root carbs as well, to balance the 'rabbit starvation' effects that they had learned needed such balance to keep them healthiest. IMHO

The hard to find answer is what kind of OTC Omega 3 is actually effective?? I've been taking Krill and recently learned that isn't going to meet the minimum bar but I also hear that most OTC Omega 3 supplements offered on the market are either rancid or contain dosages which aren't effective. If one can't get a doctor's prescription for Omega 3, then where should we be investing our dollars?

Rhonda.. Do you think it's unwise to have high levels of glutathione / antioxidants daily?
Increasingly there are warnings due to pushing the balance to far towards antioxidants to the detriment of vital oxidant related signaling.
The 'youtube space' is crying out for some wisdom on this underrepresented and misunderstood balance.

Does ALA have the same impact on gut health as DHA and/or EPA in terms of permeability or do they all behave differently?

No mention that Omega 3's DHA and EPA at least, induce the cellular housecleaning of Autophagy. That may be the main reason for the health benefits of Omega 3's. Taking Fish Oil every day may not be the optimum way to health. I would suggest that Omega 3 consumption weekly may be better.

Rhonda highlights that sardines are a good source of fatty acids. But are canned sardines, which, I'm guessing, are highly processed, are they a good source of Omega fatty acids or has all the nutrition been "leached" from the fish in processing them for canning?

As a person over 65 who has been a vegan and used alternative medicine on my life I do not have gray hair and I do not wear glasses. I am in better shape than most 30-year-old as I do martial arts and compete with a lot younger people. When you look at different societies and their mortality rates America’s falling while Asian countries their life spans are increasing. If you want quality of life diet is the key otherwise you can spend your lifetime visiting doctor offices.

(Super)Centenarians having very low markers of inflammation and even bloodsugar. It might be good to note that this has little or nothing to do with lifestyle and diet. Seems to be almost entirely genetic. Simply said: just better (DNA)repair and bulletproof immune system carries you to extreme longevity.
Whole grains lower inflammation. Sure, if there isn't any glyphosate there. US? Choose your grains wisely. Here in europe where I live almost everyone eats grains without any problem. Alot of oats, barley, rye, spelt and not so much wheat. Higher Omega3 and Vit.D is again lower inflammation and autoimmune issues. Translates to better immune system, health and longevity.

Interesting talk. One thing you claim "low Omega-3 intake from seafood" as a significant cause of preventable death, while intimating that plant sources are not adequate sources. But your citation doesn't deal with the question of sources of Omega-3's and their effect on mortality. Rather, after the 1st use of the word Omega-3, the 2009 research paper puts the word "seafood" in parenthesis - kind of like using the word protein and putting the word meat after.

There are studies to show that when fat and carbohydrates are combined there is an increased fat storage over when they are isolated. Insulin opens up the key that allows the fat to go in.
I say this because ask yourself what foods in nature exist that have close to or equal proportions of fat and carbohydrates and protein? The answer is milk something that is designed for growing bodies and that a lot of people become intolerant to the sugar of overtime.
There is no food in nature other than this that intended to for us to be combining these macro nutrients. you can find protein and carbs you can find protein and fat you cannot find carbs and fat and you can definitely not find all three in close to equal proportions outside of milk.
Cashews and pistachios would be the closest and they are not close to being equal in ratio.
As much as omnivore is logical we don't understand the interactions that the stomach has to deal with at the same that it's never had to deal with before in the history of humans.
Add to that all of the fake junk food on top of it.

The presentation refers to Pendyala S. Walker JM. Holt PR A high-fat diet is associated with endotoxemia that originates from the gut. Gastroenterology. 2012;142(5):1100-1101 e2. doi l 0.1053/j gastro 2012.01.034. I searched for this and could not find out what they considered a Western Diet (High-Fat.) This was likely a diet high in inflammatory seed oils which would trigger those results. It might not be high fat that is the culprit, but the type of fat.
