This key idea is the foundation of science today, spec. the Standard Model. Why this guy is underappreciated is clearly not his fault. He was great and very approachable. Although he explained it to me many times I didn't have the background or the math to understand what his Noble was for; from Wikipedia, Yang–Mills theory is a gauge theory based on the SU(N) group, or more generally any compact, semi-simple Lie group.
