The Secret Power of Fasting for Longevity and Healing | Dr. Valter Longo 513,172 viewsApr 10, 2019 Mark Hyman, MD 577K subscribers These days, we hear a lot about fasting. Intermittent fasting, time-restricted eating, and water fasting are just some of the many terms being thrown around in support of better health. And we can’t forget about the high-fat, ketogenic, and low-carb approaches that are gaining in popularity as well. Which one is best? What does it all mean for our longevity, brain health, and overall wellness? My guest on this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is here to sift through the terminology and confusion around fasting. Dr. Valter Longo is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of aging studies and related diseases. Known as a “Guru of Longevity,” Dr. Longo is currently Professor of Biogerontology and Biological Sciences and Director of the Institute of Longevity of the School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, as well as Director of the Oncology and Longevity Program at IFOM in Milan. He is also the Scientific Director of the Create Cures Foundation and the Valter Longo Foundation. Valter is the author of an extraordinary new book, The Longevity Diet. The culmination of 25 years of research on aging, nutrition, and disease across the globe, it provides an easy-to-understand, accessible and implementable road map to living well longer through improved nutrition. ______________________________________________________________________ Dr. Hyman is an 11-time New York Times bestselling author, family physician and international leader in the field of Functional Medicine. John C. John C. 1 year ago Dr. Longo, whether you realize it or not you have dedicated your life to serving humankind. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart for what you are doing. Sincerely, John 38 Seabound Seabound 1 year ago I admire Hymans openess and willingness to adopt to new information. Not many can do that. It definately increases my willingness to listen to his advise. Its not about politics and ego, its a search for truth. 60 Nicolas Padron Nicolas Padron 1 year ago As a medical student, I got essentially no nutritional training. Now I have learned how important nutrition is. 139 Brian Booth Brian Booth 2 years ago I have done my own version of the fast mimicking diet about 16 times over three or 4 years and I have found exactly what Professor Longo cites. The most noticeable effect because I have never suffered from any kind of illness(have been living healthy for 40years) is that my lung function increases. I go running, cycling or resistance training and I perform as I did 10 or more years ago. 85 Naomi Njeri Naomi Njeri 1 year ago I'm so impressed with Dr. Hyman! I hardly see such humble, down-to-earth and open minded people. You are so intelligent and brilliant. Best of luck and live long ❤ 24 Liz & Skatz Liz & Skatz 1 year ago ↖️ Thank you! This is great content and has reaffirmed our journey of keto and IF and how it’s helped us to lose 100lbs and cure my husbands type 2 diabetes 💕 9 Victoria Nazaire Victoria Nazaire 8 months ago Really, really loved this conversation. I’m going to delve deeper into Valter Longo world 🙏🏼Thank you Dr Mark Hyman for this presentation 🌸 3 Anne Henderson Anne Henderson 3 years ago Thank you to Dr. Longo and Dr. Hyman. This is amazing information. I will continue to work on finding my individual solution, but what a great roadmap. This is a must watch conversation! 44 CHANNEL AA CHANNEL AA 1 year ago This is by far the best Prof. Longo interview I watched on YouTube. Thanks Dr. Hyman. 18 Michael Scally Michael Scally 2 years ago I saw Valter Longo on the BBC documentary "Eat, Fast & Live Longer" with Michael Mosley five years ago and I was compelled to follow the 2/5 diet along with exercise and the results were amazing. In seven months I had lost 40 Lbs along with the Diabetes type 2 and improved cognitive ability. Now, after five years of sedentary life (no fasting nor exercise) I've gained everything back (the 40 lbs + diabetes type 2), but feeling much worst than before. So I've started the fasting again and limited exercise due to my knee pain, so I will see what happens 14 Karen Watanabe Karen Watanabe 2 years ago Feeling blessed to have listened to this interview. Thank you both. 10 Nathan Ichor Nathan Ichor 1 year ago What an awesome presentation by Dr Valter Longo. Some of his ideas look more natural to me than all the ketos/paleo/ high fats/low carbs. 12 Gina Hamilton Gina Hamilton 2 years ago amazing interview! Thank you Dr Hyman for taking moments to clarify the amazing information and slow it down to help us process all this great new science. 8 truemagneticnorth truemagneticnorth 3 years ago Thank you so much—Mark, you asked really good questions and Valter gave concise, perspicacious replies—Great interview! 19 MISSIONCAT11 MISSIONCAT11 3 years ago Dr. Longo is the man who discovered that fasting, before receiving chemotherapy, protected mice from the harmful side-effects of chemotherapy. Further, the fasting mice did not lose their hair or get sick, and none of them died due to the large doses of chemotherapy they received. Human volunteers have had similar results. 103 Nancy Woodruff Nancy Woodruff 2 years ago So appreciate how this interview underlines the COMPLEXITY of food, the devil-in-the-details of interpreting the science of nutrition. Thank you! 6 boncoon boncoon 3 years ago You both have wonderful enthusiasm that is inspiring and motivating. I appreciate what you have mentioned here and will share this post with those that I am able to. I would love to hear a conversation addressing markers of, say deficiencies as I work towards my general health.I notice that my nails are oddly thin and weak, for example. Thank you, gentleman. I will be looking-out for both your findings / works with anticipation. May your well-being flourish always, Bonnie 6 Melis Melis 3 years ago Read the book, tried the fmd and Highly recommend it! Its not risky, like a water fast and it got me thinking more about the macro ratios and certainly got me eating healthier than I already eat. Love it, keep up the brilliant work gentlemen! 13 TomK. TomK. 9 months ago I have prostate cancer and am researching fasting for that reason (I've already used fasting for weight loss in the past). I was very disappointed to hear that fasting alone was NOT enough to treat cancer. That it seems to require chemo. My doctor immediately went to surgery and a complete prostatectomy after delivering his diagnosis. That sent warning bells off in my head. Even chemo alone would be less invasive, it seems to me. But I haven't researched it yet. We'll see. 4 Sandra Bentley Sandra Bentley 3 years ago (edited) Love Dr. Longo. So pleased you had him on your program. That was so fantastic. I see now how he gears this diet to where we are at right now, this is often overlooked. Will listen to this again. One thing I got out of this is test your IGF1, if it is over 140 then maybe cut down the protein. Well done for this wonderful interview. 63 brian warner brian warner 1 year ago I have followed Longo since his work on mice with E.A.E in 2016 amazed me. At first, I had many credibility concerns about his FMD. I have spent countless hours studying his work on fasting, as well as Keto strategies and can now state I believe he is an extraordinary genius and long term (5-7 days) fasting(either Prolon FMD or a variation) is an extremely powerful healing modality, particularly for all things immune system related. In addition, it is wonderful for reducing risks of most common diseases. I have done five FMD's including a few small adjustments (somewhat less calories and less carbs as a % of calories, with terrific results! Thanks for the interview. 5 Victoria Nazaire Victoria Nazaire 8 months ago Really, really loved this conversation. I’m going to delve deeper into Valter Longo world 🙏🏼Thank you Dr Mark Hyman for this presentation 🌸 1 Lisa Riachi Lisa Riachi 11 months ago This was the best interview! Thank you both for the information. It’s unacceptable the lack of funding to encourage proper nutrition. So true that dietary habits influence disease which keeps people on their meds! 2 Marta Peralta Marta Peralta 2 years ago Thank you very much for this video. Very enlightening! Half way to it, I started understanding that the "best diet" depends very much on the age, and condition of the individual; and that it varies over time. Pity that the food dialogue is driven by our general tendency to oversimplify and desire to find golden rules. Wouldn´t it be possible to express "the ideal diet" as a polynomial function of vegetable carbs, fats and proteins, considering just the "age" variable? that would give us, the general public, a golden rule to go by without having to read and understand the different mechanisms that conform our body. Which are very interesting, but require a great deal of time and understanding, in a time where these commodities are very scarce! 1 Bruce DeGrouchy Bruce DeGrouchy 3 years ago (edited) Without a doubt the most valuable and interesting interview I have ever listened to. I sent a link to my own Doctor. Thank you to both of you gentlemen for sharing the information! 29 John S. John S. 3 years ago This interview is brilliant and congratulations to both. Don't close our minds, follow the evidence and what a genuinly fantastic philanthropist Dr Longo is. 13 Manuel Ojeda Manuel Ojeda 1 year ago I've done intermetent fasting with water since I was 40 with water and Prayer and BIBLE STUDIES. NOW AT MY SIXTIES I STARTED AGAIN WITH MORE KNOWLEDGE. All the best, Chuck 2 Kbomb * Kbomb * 1 year ago What about alternate day fasting? I fast 2 or 3 days a week, and make sure to eat plenty of nutritious food during my non-fasting days. I find it a lot easier than several days at a time, less frequently. It feels good to me and I have found sources indicating that the effects have the same benefit. 2 Swanee Swanee 3 years ago Dr. Hyman...you are the best! Thank you for an awesome interview 212 Becoming Whole Becoming Whole 2 years ago (edited) Loved it! Thank you for such a wonderful, full of knowledge conversation. I wish Dr. Longo has even just one social media I could check out. 3 Ronald Alterman Ronald Alterman 8 months ago Hi Dr. Hyman and Dr. Longo. One of the reasons that I don't attempt to use fasting too often is because I'm a weight lifter and I'm trying to increase my muscle mass, not reduce it. In another video Dr. Longo explained that the muscle mass lost during fasting is only temporary, which is good news. So, there is fasting talked about in this video and there are other fasts talked about in your other videos, like intermittent fasting. I'm interested in using fasting, but I have no ideas how to come up with a strategy where there are so many different protocols. Ron 1 Double D Double D 2 years ago Great interview! After hearing this I bought his book and am going to try his method of fasting and way of eating. 12 Helle Egebjerg Andersen / YOUbuilding Helle Egebjerg Andersen / YOUbuilding 2 years ago It is so interesting to listen to Valter Longo. Many thanks for sharing! 4 Jerry Shaw Jerry Shaw 7 months ago Dr Hyman handled this interview very well. It was very informative. I've been watching many interviews with Dr Longo, and I agree with may of you that this was the best one so far. Does anyone know if Dr Hyman was able to try Prolon before the pandemic turned everything upside-down-ish? I can't find a video of it if he did. Dave S Dave S 3 years ago Many other factors to consider when determining how much protein to consume: microbiome status, stomach acidity, lymph-liver-gb-kidney-brain health & vitality etc., etc. We've been fasting for thousands of years and I don't think Dr Longo has actually discovered the magic script when it comes to fasting or eating, if he had why then is the Prolon product a meal plan for one size fits all. 10 Delia Funk Delia Funk 1 year ago What a fantastic interview! Such an interesting docter, he is saying such amazing stuff, thank you! anne rou anne rou 3 years ago Dr Longo is the real deal 152 Sean Tracy Sean Tracy 3 years ago I have had Colitis since 1990. Bless him for doing all these podcasts! I wish his program was available in Australia 2 Jim D Jim D 3 years ago I think we are at the opening of a massive increase in understanding and nutritional awareness about how to leverage the body's own natural healing processes to radically increase health and longevity. There's a mounting sense of revolution and anticipating. Let's get the ball rolling fast guys. Lots of people are in desperate need of help - and most of it it is sane and rational lifestyle advise about basic proper eating. We have to change out this insane culture of eating 2/47/365 stuffing our faces with processed foods (esp out of season high glycemic carbs) and going more toward natural seasonal eating and social structures that are not so preoccupied with satisfying the hedonistic impulses.
