Excellent interview as always. David's point regarding youth and disease fighting ability, can also be a result of being alive less, and so accumulation of less damage. This is another way of looking at it, which needs to be considered as part of the damage repair theory, which Aubrey De Grey is spearheading. We have seen time and time again with isolated molecules, that bringing "levels back up to youthful measures" do not extend life in humans. Testosterone and Estrogen for example, DHEA as another example. Although certain molecules and biomarkers decrease with age, their decrease may be a consequence of aging and not a causation of aging. As NAD+ decreases as we age, fixing the damage which causes NAD to decline, is another way of looking at the same item, rather than studying the "restocking" of the depleted molecule to youthful levels. For example, perhaps there is some mitochondrial dysfunction due to damage, which causes NAD depletion. If this is the case, then replacing NAD may be a band aid at best. I'm not discounting David's work, however I'm intending opening the floor to further discussion. What causes mitochondrial dysfunction, and if we repair the mitochondria, will NAD+ rise back to normal or some level or normalcy? It is my feeling that the mitochondria is still largely unknown and highly complex. "Energy producing organelle" is a giant over simplification and I think our understanding of how to repair the mitochondria from various forms of damage, will reveal new therapeutics to help us reach "longevity escape velocity." Looking forward to reading some further thoughts. Rob 52 Hash Pond Hash Pond 10 months ago I've eaten 1 meal a day since I was a little kid and never felt bad for it. I weighed in at 280 pounds at 5' 11" and spent the night there under observation and had a series of tests done as I and the doctors suspected a heart attack. However, after the tread mill and nuclear radiation dye imaging and ultra sound, the Doctors told me that my arteries were clear, my lungs were clear, and that my heart was healthy and strong and told me I could now do that good old Marine Corps Styled PT that was good for me then and now will be good for you too. The Doctors told me I have another 50 + years on this heart. I once took my body fat ratio down to 6% through diet alone. The main reason i tried this because i SUFFER from GOUT, which gives horrible pains. No matter what diet i tried or what medications i took, i got attack after attack which left me desperate for a solution (someone who does not have that can hardly imagine the pain it causes. Since i have been fasting i have had NO ATTACKS, and recently stopped my medication to counter gout. The cause of my gout is genetic and even eating hardly anything that contains purine (the thing that causes it) did not help. I am not a specialist but i can only guess that the fasting forces my body to get rid (or consume) the urine acid more effectively. In the beginning you feel hungry a lot, but you quickly get used to it. In my opinion it is more of a mental trick to not eat then a physical discomfort. I do not eat between 20:00 and13:00 but of course i eat a bit later when i come home late, or a bit earlier when i feel week and really need to eat (you do not have to suffer). For me it works great and i would recommend it to anyone, especially for people with gout 3 Aaron From Ohio Aaron From Ohio 11 months ago Been doing strict OMAD since late 2019. Fasting exercises our body and causes it to become more efficient in processing and helps clean up the junk in our system like old cells, viruses and other harmful substances. It also gives the pancreas, liver and other organs a chance to rest between meals. This is much like allowing your body to rest between workouts in an exercise program. Your body needs time to recuperate... Conversely, just don't exercise or fast and continue to eat sugar and processed foods. Just turned 25, I need to keep this in mind. For the first couple hours after waking up, I’m usually good but if I don’t eat by certain times, then it’s hard to stay with it mentally It depends on what you eat. When I eat stuff with a bunch of nitrates and preservatives, I crash and need a nap, so I try to avoid that. I started doing intermittent fasting, for those that don't know it's a 16:8 ratio. Out of 24 hours in the day you have an 8 hour window that you eat and the other 16 you don't eat. I've been doing it for about 2 weeks now and I can tell I've lost some weight and I do feel a little better too. Its not that hard really for anyone thinking about it. The way I do it is I only eat when I'm at work mainly. Out of the 8 hours I'm at work I use a 6 hour window while I'm there and give myself 2 more hours when I get home to complete the 8. 2 Nick Harper Nick Harper 10 months ago As a man in my mid-30's who took a smoke break mid-way through sitting around and watching this video instead of exercising, please give me that pill. Victor Connor Victor Connor 6 months ago David, I just started reading your book, Lifespan, yesterday at the request of a friend. Even though I’ve studied science since 1960, I’ve stopped reading any books by medical people, doctors or researchers, because their scientific abilities, in general, are so poor. I have to admit that for the first 147 pages, I was impressed even though you said a few things that were totally wrong. I’m assuming you are a good researcher, but then page 148 happened. On that page you stated that you believed in the beneficial effects of vaccination! This is shocking to me because you seem to have no clue that vaccination, next to current AMA cancer therapies, are the worst thing that the medical system has ever done to humanity. Vaccination has damaged BILLIONS of people and has dramatically shortened the lives of MILLIONS of people, never really even helping one person. Now, you may ask who the hell am I, not being a medical researcher, so I’ll tell you. I fell in love with science in November of 1960, when I was in the second grade. Since then, I’ve read over 3,500 science books, performed hundreds of scientific experiments, solved tens of thousands of scientific, mathematical and engineering problems. What woke me up about vaccination was the fact that my children were both damaged by vaccines in the 1990s. Because of that I did some research on the topic and was shocked when I read a 1898 scientific paper by a British scientist, Alfred Russel Wallace, that was called “Vaccination a Delusion: It’s Penal Enforcement a Crime.” You can easily find the original paper on the Internet, which you should do immediately. If you do, then you will find that Jenner’s vaccine was one of the three major CAUSES of smallpox, and NEVER reduced it. I hope you can learn about this. Fasting, good diet, and exercise helped me finally stabilize to a healthy weight while I see all my other coworkers drinking coke bottles, snacking on chips/chocolate, and eating fast-food practically all hours of the day. what you put in is what you put out - I'm just sayin 15 inVINcible inVINcible 11 months ago He makes some good points but life expectancy is up year after year so just wondering how correct he really is. Large numbers of natives are overweight, diabetics, or just plain unhealthy. Govt commodities are pure junk, low fat, high in carbs/ sugar, etc. I always thought that natives can't eat a modern American diet because they're designed for live-off-the-land types of diets. Wild game, foraging, like a hunter- gatherer. A good way to mimic that would be a combination of low carb/keto/carnivore/intermittent fasting. matt luney matt luney 11 months ago I’ve been doing this for years now, I just turned 30 and I’ve still got the same physic as I did when I was 16, no maintenance work outs needed and you better believe I take this shirt off every time I can lol 2 KEYBLADEE X KEYBLADEE X 11 months ago I only feel super sharp and quick thinking when ive fasted and ive always wondered if its a real thing… I believe it is now! Ryan Vick Ryan Vick 10 months ago I am now over 40, and I do really well with just 1 big meal per day. Typically I will eat about 2 meals. I guess I might eat 3 meals, but I shift it, to later time. That means, breakfast will be at lunch time (my first meal), then dinner at 6pm, then late night 11pm for meal#3. So that's 3 meals actually. I do well with that. But if the meal is huge, it easily covers 2 meals. For me. For my body. And I feel great. (skip breakfast at 6:00am -- I'm done with that.) 1 PEDS PEDS 11 months ago I lost 25 in 4 months by doing 600 cals or less every other day. NDHatley1 NDHatley1 11 months ago Everyone has always asked me how I always look fit despite not working out much at all. Have been telling them it's because of fasting to eat generally 1 meal a day other than the rare 2 meals. They've always told me that it makes no sense and that I just "have good genes" or "just got lucky with a fast metabolism". Meanwhile, I've never seen a skinny or fit person that eats 4,000 calories a day and doesn't workout or exercise with their job and I've never seen a fat person that practices any sort of fasting. Coincidence? Likely not. Derek Sutherland Derek Sutherland 11 months ago I only eat 2 meals a day and they are 4-5 hours apart at most (I mild cardio/exercise in between the meals). I've done this naturally since my late 20's and just recently found out that although maybe not quite as effective as what David is explaining, but essentially if you can spend at least 18 hours not eating then it's good for you. 123455667 123455667 1 month ago (edited) How the hell does he know what happened 6 million years ago? Honestly the best advice given regarding food came from Prophet Muhammad. Just go and research this and how these modern guys are just catching up. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls, to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one third with food, one third with drink and one third with air.” 4 Steven G Steven G 11 months ago D.L. Hughley: "Momma we fasting....?
