Aging w/ Metformin, Rapamycin & More: Longevity Researcher Tells All 24,359 viewsSep 24, 2020 High Intensity Health 542K subscribers Matt Kaeberlein, PhD discusses how improving the mechanisms of aging enhance not only support longevity, but also boost immune system health. ➢Today's show is brought to you by Keto Brick! One of the best Ketogenic meal replacements out there Get started: https://www.ketobrick.com Related Video with Dr. Peter Attia discussing autophagy and fasting: https://youtu.be/EklA1iI2Iy8 -----------------------------------------Lets Connect-------------------------------------- ➢ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/MikeMutzelMS ➢ Listen to the Audio in iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/2.. . ➢ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/metabolic_mike ------------------------------------Show Notes-------------------------------------- 04:00 Your risk of a severe outcome from Corona has an age-related exponential increase. 07:03 No federal Corona funds went to the National Institute on Aging, despite the fact that age is the greatest risk factor for dying from Corona. 18:16 Targeting the biological mechanisms of aging strengthens the immune system of older people against many illnesses. 19:44 Biological aging can be impacted significantly. With the immune system, we can probably get a 20-year restoration of function, maybe more. 31:25 Genes that affect aging were created to make the decision between fast reproduction/low stress resistance vs slow reproduction/high stress resistance. 32:14 Unregulated continued expression of pathways like mTOR at high levels drives aging. 33:58 With chronic expression of pro-growth pathways in dividing cells, your risk of developing cancer goes up dramatically. 35:18 The continued expression of pro-growth pathways in cells in the brain and heart, is associated with higher levels of oxidative stress. 35:42 High levels of oxidative stress largely from metabolic processes can cause cells to go into senescent state, where the cells give off pro-inflammatory signals. 37:05 Age related increase of inflammation creates an environment that permits many of the functional declines and diseases associated with aging. 37:54 In mice, if you clear senescent cells accumulated from aging, you see a dramatic reduction in inflammatory molecules and signaling, increased lifespan and functional improvements. 38:12 When we treat old mice with rapamycin, in as little as 8 weeks, it turns down senescent inflammatory response. 46:30 Because of a chronic inflammatory state, the immune system is no longer able to respond appropriately to challenges, inappropriately responds to self-antigens and fails to survail cancer early. 49:15 Rapamycin dampens the chronic inflammatory state. 50:03 Short term treatment with Rapamycin in mice allows old mice to respond to a vaccine like a young mouse. 50:15 Healthy older people improved their response to an influenza vaccine in 6-week clinical trials in humans using a Rapamycin derivative Everolimus/RAD001. 01:05:30 Rapamycin shifts metabolism away from primarily glucose-based metabolic state to utilizing alternative carbon sources, ketone bodies and fat metabolism. 01:09:30 People with diabetes who take Metformin live longer than people with diabetes who do not. 01:14:20 High levels of autophagy are often associated with healthier aging and lifespan. High levels of autophagy are also associated with many pathological conditions. 01:26:00 You can nominate your dog to participate in the Dog Aging project. Your dog must be at least 7 years old and weigh at least 40 pounds. 113 Comments rongmaw lin Add a comment... Young At Any Age Young At Any Age 1 year ago Great video! We are both in our 80's and feel better than ever! We are all about healthy aging. For us, eating a plant-rich diet and reducing stress levels are the keys to good physical health, happiness, & longevity. We are doing research for our new healthy-aging advice YouTube channel to inspire others. Learned from you. Thank you. 16 High Intensity Health John B John B 1 year ago I have been taking Metformin and Rapamycin for over a year now and it has changed my life. I feel 20 again and I never get sick. 11 EyeOfOdin EyeOfOdin 1 year ago Been actually looking into metformin recently. My current daily supplements are DHEA, Pregnenolone, Bilberry Anthocyanins, full spectrum vitamin, resveratrol, astragalus and Omega 3. I've noticed a big difference when i keep at it daily. 5 High Intensity Health Liz & Skatz Liz & Skatz 1 year ago (edited) ↖️ My husband was put onto Metformin and he had an horrendous bunch of side effects from it (digestive distress I’m not over exaggerating here) so keto/IF have worked really well as we’ve lost 100lbs between us. We have documented our progress on our channel but intend to continue onward after reaching goal weights 💕 17 High Intensity Health John Tocho John Tocho 1 year ago I enjoyed the video, thank you. Question: Berberine and metformin have similar effects related to insulin resistance etc., do you think they would have similar anti-aging effects as well? Thank you, John 4 High Intensity Health Hannes Hannes 1 year ago What would be your thoughts for a healthy, lean 27 y/o who resistance trains and fasts the last three days of each month, to additionally take a moderate dose of rapa in those last three days with the fast? Any additional benefits, when one is already water-only-fasting during that time? (accelerate the autophagy process?). Thinking of making the cycles of growth/repair a bit more intense. 1 sandra coleman sandra coleman 1 year ago This is remarkable. What do we do to get this information to the federal leaders who make decisions about money for research? We are missing a very important area of science that affects our quality of life. 23 High Intensity Health Anthony Bewlz Anthony Bewlz 1 year ago Would have loved to hear his/your theoretical take on occasional courses/usage of the senolytics such Fox04-DRI to promote long-term homeostasis, as well as a deeper dive on the topic of 'inflammaging' and 'free radical theory' in the specific context of exercise, and a relative 'point of diminishing returns' 1 High Intensity Health Dan Dan 1 year ago I quite enjoy Aubrey De Grey's take - he named 7 pathways, they seem pretty solid, and despite people constantly knocking the idea no one has found an 8th in 20 odd years so it's probably pretty bang on. Fix 1, nothing happens. Fix all 7 though... 3 High Intensity Health mary nguyen mary nguyen 1 year ago Great interview! Really exciting research to keep an eye on. No discussion of it here, would have been interested in hearing Matt’s views on that. 16 River Savage River Savage 1 year ago Mike, your posture is really good. It is amazing how much better a person looks when they aren’t hunched over. It is easy to forget about posture. Most people don’t check themselves. So I am not hacking on your guest. Do you have your results of your Hovarth test? 1 High Intensity Health ortcloud99 ortcloud99 1 year ago Perhaps cells become senescent because of lack of autophagy rather than just strictly hayflick limit and rapamycin is cleaning and repairing these senescent cells versus senolytics is just a destruction and removal of them. Moira Goldsmith Moira Goldsmith 1 year ago (edited) Life throws some dreadful stuff our way... even if we are very involved with living a good healthy life....fear will shorten your life. With respect the AI projections and number crunching data can not account for the biological changes when massive stress lands at your door. And, I am not a mouse. 🥴🤣 Thanks for the info anyhoooo. 1 Patrick LaChance Patrick LaChance 1 year ago Co-morbidities are the risk factors. Do we need drugs? Do you research the effects of food on aging? 5 Random Roses Random Roses 1 year ago (edited) Berberine is preferable for most of us. If you haven’t been diagnosed with diabetes, you can’t get Metformin. Also I’ve had no digestive issues taking this on an empty stomach. Apparently this can even help with digestion as it is a very bitter herb. Source your supplements avoiding binders and fillers. I use a capsule with black pepper by FSC which is a U.K. company. Lastly, and most importantly, Mike recommended it! That is why they don't want to fund it, as long as the findings are available to only a few chosen ones... And not to the masses. In fact this economic crisis due to covid had made rich people richer, and poor poorer. Ketone Burner Ketone Burner 1 year ago Keto bricks is keto miracle!!! 1 High Intensity Health mark veen mark veen 1 year ago (edited) I think real age reversal is still very far away. Eventhough, some people believe and tell we're almost there.( they said the same thing 20 years ago, not much changed). I do believe we can slow the aging process down greatly. But we probably will need to start very young, unfortunately. First to get atleast the super centenarians genes would help a great deal. Think genetically engineered babies. This is more realistic. Mammals like Bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) can live for over 200 years. We are mammals. But for this timeline.... getting most of humanity to around the 120 year mark in relative good health would already be a tremendous achievement. Getting there the natural way is pretty much impossible, no matter what you do. I dont believe NAD boosters will carry you there. Look more at future crispr and senolytics... 3 iLike Austin Goh iLike Austin Goh 1 year ago Plant-based diet isn't gonna work for everyone but it's the healthiest diet for sure 1 Valery Chuprin Valery Chuprin 1 year ago The biological concept of aging is completely wrong.
