The Secret Power of Fasting for Longevity and Healing | Dr. Valter Longo 514,186 viewsApr 10, 2019 10K DISLIKE SHARE DOWNLOAD CLIP SAVE Mark Hyman, MD 579K subscribers These days, we hear a lot about fasting. Intermittent fasting, time-restricted eating, and water fasting are just some of the many terms being thrown around in support of better health. And we can’t forget about the high-fat, ketogenic, and low-carb approaches that are gaining in popularity as well. Which one is best? What does it all mean for our longevity, brain health, and overall wellness? My guest on this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is here to sift through the terminology and confusion around fasting. Dr. Valter Longo is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of aging studies and related diseases. Known as a “Guru of Longevity,” Dr. Longo is currently Professor of Biogerontology and Biological Sciences and Director of the Institute of Longevity of the School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, as well as Director of the Oncology and Longevity Program at IFOM in Milan. He is also the Scientific Director of the Create Cures Foundation and the Valter Longo Foundation. Valter is the author of an extraordinary new book, The Longevity Diet. The culmination of 25 years of research on aging, nutrition, and disease across the globe, it provides an easy-to-understand, accessible and implementable road map to living well longer through improved nutrition. ______________________________________________________________________ Dr. Hyman is an 11-time New York Times bestselling author, family physician and international leader in the field of Functional Medicine. John C. John C. 1 year ago Dr. Longo, whether you realize it or not you have dedicated your life to serving humankind. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart for what you are doing. Sincerely, John 39 Nicolas Padron Nicolas Padron 1 year ago As a medical student, I got essentially no nutritional training. Now I have learned how important nutrition is. 139 Seabound Seabound 1 year ago I admire Hymans openess and willingness to adopt to new information. Not many can do that. It definately increases my willingness to listen to his advise. Its not about politics and ego, its a search for truth. 60 Brian Booth Brian Booth 2 years ago I have done my own version of the fast mimicking diet about 16 times over three or 4 years and I have found exactly what Professor Longo cites. The most noticeable effect because I have never suffered from any kind of illness(have been living healthy for 40years) is that my lung function increases. I go running, cycling or resistance training and I perform as I did 10 or more years ago. 85 MISSIONCAT11 MISSIONCAT11 3 years ago Dr. Longo is the man who discovered that fasting, before receiving chemotherapy, protected mice from the harmful side-effects of chemotherapy. Further, the fasting mice did not lose their hair or get sick, and none of them died due to the large doses of chemotherapy they received. Human volunteers have had similar results. 103 Naomi Njeri Naomi Njeri 1 year ago I'm so impressed with Dr. Hyman! I hardly see such humble, down-to-earth and open minded people. You are so intelligent and brilliant. Best of luck and live long ❤ 24 TomK. TomK. 10 months ago I have prostate cancer and am researching fasting for that reason (I've already used fasting for weight loss in the past). I was very disappointed to hear that fasting alone was NOT enough to treat cancer. That it seems to require chemo. My doctor immediately went to surgery and a complete prostatectomy after delivering his diagnosis. That sent warning bells off in my head. Even chemo alone would be less invasive, it seems to me. But I haven't researched it yet. We'll see. 4 Michael Scally Michael Scally 2 years ago I saw Valter Longo on the BBC documentary "Eat, Fast & Live Longer" with Michael Mosley five years ago and I was compelled to follow the 2/5 diet along with exercise and the results were amazing. In seven months I had lost 40 Lbs along with the Diabetes type 2 and improved cognitive ability. Now, after five years of sedentary life (no fasting nor exercise) I've gained everything back (the 40 lbs + diabetes type 2), but feeling much worst than before. So I've started the fasting again and limited exercise due to my knee pain, so I will see what happens 14 Victoria Nazaire Victoria Nazaire 8 months ago Really, really loved this conversation. Thanks Dr. Hyman. 18 Sandra Bentley Sandra Bentley 3 years ago (edited) Love Dr. Longo. So pleased you had him on your program. That was so fantastic. I see now how he gears this diet to where we are at right now, this is often overlooked. Will listen to this again. One thing I got out of this is test your IGF1, if it is over 140 then maybe cut down the protein. Well done for this wonderful interview. 63 Nathan Ichor Nathan Ichor 1 year ago What an awesome presentation by Dr Valter Longo. Some of his ideas look more natural to me than all the ketos/paleo/ high fats/low carbs. 12 Gina Hamilton Gina Hamilton 2 years ago amazing interview! Thank you Dr Hyman for taking moments to clarify the amazing information and slow it down to help us process all this great new science. 8 brian warner brian warner 1 year ago I have followed Longo since his work on mice with E.A.E in 2016 amazed me. At first, I had many credibility concerns about his FMD. I have spent countless hours studying his work on fasting, as well as Keto strategies and can now state I believe he is an extraordinary genius and long term (5-7 days) fasting(either Prolon FMD or a variation) is an extremely powerful healing modality, particularly for all things immune system related. In addition, it is wonderful for reducing risks of most common diseases. I have done five FMD's including a few small adjustments (somewhat less calories and less carbs as a % of calories, with terrific results! Thanks for the interview. 5 S K S K 3 months ago Mark Hyman is a great listener with minimum interruption.Literally a feast watching two noble men speak.Dr Longo research and the way he puts his thesis in lucid words is mind blowing.kudos to you for helping mankind. 1 Melis Melis 3 years ago Read the book, tried the fmd and Highly recommend it! I fast 2 or 3 days a week, and make sure to eat plenty of nutritious food during my non-fasting days. I find it a lot easier than several days at a time, less frequently. It feels good to me and I have found sources indicating that the effects have the same benefit. 2 Dave S Dave S 3 years ago Many other factors to consider when determining how much protein to consume: microbiome status, stomach acidity, lymph-liver-gb-kidney-brain health & vitality etc., etc. We've been fasting for thousands of years and I don't think Dr Longo has actually discovered the magic script when it comes to fasting or eating, if he had why then is the Prolon product a meal plan for one size fits all. 10 Nancy Woodruff Nancy Woodruff 2 years ago So appreciate how this interview underlines the COMPLEXITY of food, the devil-in-the-details of interpreting the science of nutrition. Many posting here apparently did not actually listen to it. Don't close our minds, follow the evidence and what a genuinly fantastic philanthropist Dr Longo is. 13 Marta Peralta Marta Peralta 2 years ago Thank you very much for this video. Very enlightening! Half way to it, I started understanding that the "best diet" depends very much on the age, and condition of the individual; and that it varies over time. Pity that the food dialogue is driven by our general tendency to oversimplify and desire to find golden rules. Wouldn´t it be possible to express "the ideal diet" as a polynomial function of vegetable carbs, fats and proteins, considering just the "age" variable? that would give us, the general public, a golden rule to go by without having to read and understand the different mechanisms that conform our body. Which are very interesting, but require a great deal of time and understanding, in a time where these commodities are very scarce! 1 Dr Charles Parker Dr Charles Parker 1 year ago Thanks, Mark - another outstanding interview with details that matter - every day. I've watched it three times and got something from it each time. Thank you !! 35 Evy Ju Evy Ju 3 years ago I wanted to purchase his book for ages now and still hesitated for some reason. after this interview I did it straight away and it IS THE BEST PURCHASE IVE MADE SO FAR. Its not only informational but very stylish read full of interesting facts about Italian lifestyle that radiates wellness. I also greatly enjoyed the part where Longo describes how he was ridiculed at uni when he wanted to do biochem when he was a musician at that point. And look at him now! (as a struggling physician I found that part inspirational) Furthermore I LOVE how he is different to all of these Keto/paleo/drgundry/blabla gurus, because he purely speaks from scientific point objectively describing the facts without biased opinion. For those who critique the prolon fasting kits - funds going to charity and so does the book sales:) 30 Mick Meyers Mick Meyers 1 year ago I will no longer be a diabetic So thankful I learned the ketogenic diet with I F and prolonged fasting. I HOPE I LIVE AS STRONG AS MY GREYGRAMOTHER WHO LIVED TO BE 103 YEARS OLD IN CUBA. 17 Rene Ronquillo Rene Ronquillo 1 year ago In my opinion, water only fasting diet for 3/5 days is just more powerful than a Fasting mimicking diet for 3/5 days. Day 4/5 of a water only fast, blood ketones are high, glucose and insulin are low. That state would seem to promote Autophagy. 8 Gary Gary 2 years ago As a Food Revolution 'lover' (where I 1st heard Dr Hyman) I must say, this interview is PERFECT. The biggie that comes up, w/ me and lots of others, is *missing meals, intermittent fasting for a day or more, causes anxiety, agitation, nervousness.* I am so addicted to the soothing pleasures of food, all organic, plant-based, fresh, flavorful (I love to create in the kitchen - a satisfying and OK part of my addiction). I am grateful I can reveal this emotional truth about myself. Writing about this is recovery, healing, the path to calm and sanity. Gary in Hilo 11 Carly Whybrow Carly Whybrow 2 years ago Amazing interview! Thanks for all the info. I have just bought Prof. Longo's book and can't wait to try this for me & hubby (he has an auto-immune disease) - fingers crossed it helps :) 2 Inaki Legorburu Inaki Legorburu 2 years ago As much as I am facinated by the innovative thinking, I am surprised that the discussion is still limited to food macros with no attention for nutritional micros. Having successfully controlled my own cancer process through a focus on micronutrients and the role of my liver and immune system, I am somewhat "sceptical" when a researcher insists that cancer is different to all the other chronic diseases, and that the way forward is the synergetic combination of FMD with conventional treatments such as chemo. In the short term this may be a viable way forward, one of the ways, but so is natural immune therapy. Thanks for a good interview, and tasty food for thought. 3 Swanee Swanee 3 years ago Dr. Hyman...you are the best! Thank you so much for doing these important interviews. You, Perlmutter, Longo, and many others like you folks, are really the avant garde of medicine. 2 Silvia Silvia 3 years ago Two great doctors. Thanks for all you do!🦋 8 Jim D Jim D 3 years ago I think we are at the opening of a massive increase in understanding and nutritional awareness about how to leverage the body's own natural healing processes to radically increase health and longevity. There's a mounting sense of revolution and anticipating. Let's get the ball rolling fast guys. Lots of people are in desperate need of help - and most of it it is sane and rational lifestyle advise about basic proper eating. We have to change out this insane culture of eating 2/47/365 stuffing our faces with processed foods (esp out of season high glycemic carbs) and going more toward natural seasonal eating and social structures that are not so preoccupied with satisfying the hedonistic impulses. 1 Teena4RL Teena4RL 2 years ago I love Dr. Longo's humility and that he advocates interventions anyone can do, tests anyone can obtain, not just the privileged few. 9 Jerry Shaw Jerry Shaw 7 months ago Dr Hyman handled this interview very well. It was very informative. I've been watching many interviews with Dr Longo, and I agree with may of you that this was the best one so far. Does anyone know if Dr Hyman was able to try Prolon before the pandemic turned everything upside-down-ish? I can't find a video of it if he did. I've gone from a 22 to a size 9 in jeans. I am SMALLER than I was in college ♡ 328 rubyxcube3 rubyxcube3 3 years ago I’ve listed to and watched at least 10 different interviews with Dr Longo and read his book, the longevity diet, and the reason you see him agree with certain points but also counter it is because the research he’s studied and done, is not based on one factor. He compares them to all the pillars. One of those pillars is the largest study on centenarians, people who have lived actively and very healthy into their 100’s, and none of those people followed keto, paleo, strict veganism , etc. Because there’s research that supports all these diets, he then has to place the findings against ALL the pillars of longevity and those diets fall short because none of the longevity groups actually followed any of those diets. None of those people Intermittently fasted the way we understand it, as 16/8 or 20/4, etc. They did the normal breakfast at 8 and usually stopped eating at latest by 7-8 pm for example. 12/12. There is research that supports benefits of 3-5 day fasting, as his own research in that area confirms, but intermittent fasting has shown to increase gall bladder desease and removal. In the research of actual humans living healthy and active into their 100,s they all ate regular hours and a little bit of everything although mostly vegetarian/ pescatarian. Basically the well known Mediterranean diet. Basically plant based. Rice, beans and pasta are all from plants so it doesn’t mean only veggies. His fasting research at USC involves 5 day water fast but one of the pillars is about compliance. People have difficulty fasting on just water for 5 days so a 5 day vegan fast at 725 calories (around 362 calories from veggies and 363 from fats like olives and nuts) is more reasonable for ppl to follow. Being vegan is hard to comply with so it’s ok to have a little meat or mostly fish since the centenarians did it too and live much longer than heavy meat eaters. 60 Joseph Baumann Joseph Baumann 3 years ago Great podcast! Many thanks for sharing! 4 Ronald Alterman Ronald Alterman 8 months ago Hi Dr. Hyman and Dr. Longo. One of the reasons that I don't attempt to use fasting too often is because I'm a weight lifter and I'm trying to increase my muscle mass, not reduce it. In another video Dr. Longo explained that the muscle mass lost during fasting is only temporary, which is good news. So, there is fasting talked about in this video and there are other fasts talked about in your other videos, like intermittent fasting. I'm interested in using fasting, but I have no ideas how to come up with a strategy where there are so many different protocols. Ron 1 Delia Funk Delia Funk 1 year ago What a fantastic interview! And drinking lots of water can even be toxic. In dry fasting fat cells are converted into water! 3 Helle Egebjerg Andersen / YOUbuilding Helle Egebjerg Andersen / YOUbuilding 2 years ago It is so interesting to listen to Valter Longo. I am really happy to hear that all this Resource is done to the power of food and fasting. Thanks🙏 lhl lhl 3 years ago (edited) I like Longo's research a lot (a couple of his writeups are in my "bestof" folder for metabolic health), but having done a lot of reading on the subject area, I find some of his diet recommendations relatively suspect. Since I hadn't heard of this before he mentioned it, I did several Pubmed searches for any issues relating gallstones to TRF or fasting in general and found nothing in the literature (lots of conflicting epidemiological studies on types of foods that increase risk of gallstones of course, but that's par for the course). Regarding the levels of carbohydrate intake (60%) that he considers "optimal" or uncontroversial, he mentions multiple times referencing epidemiological studies, which again, I am very skeptical - everything from the memory-based FFQs used to collect the data, the poor hazard ratios for the results, to the frequent reversals of study results as different factors are corrected for (smoking, trans-fats, or even basic demographic data). Ioannidi's recent op-ed is a good place to start when looking at the current state of nutritional science: doi:oi:10.1001/jama.2018.11025. New, larger epidemiological studies, like PURE (which also has its share of problems), conflicts, eg showing higher carbohydrate consumption to be associated with higher all-cause mortality (doi:10.1016/S0140-6736(17)32252-3). I simply don't think general population epidemiology to be very useful in nutrition for anything besides suggesting hypothesis for further research (not as conclusive in and of themselves, certainly not without extreme hazard ratios). As Hyman mentions, the majority of Americans are insulin resistant (examining recent NHANES data, researchers recently concluded only 12% of Americans were metabolically healthy (doi:10.1089/met.2018.0105), and a VLCKD has been shown to be sustainable long term and improve almost every single metabolic marker (doi: 10.1007/s13300-018-0373-9, doi: 10.1007/s11010-007-9448-z). Obviously, people should look at what works for themselves individually, but much more useful than suggestions of what to eat I think is what biomarkers to track for optimal health. I'd recommend starting with: waist-to-height ratio, blood pressure, resting heart rate, which are all non-invasive, and easy to track at home... 2 Kristen Ude Kristen Ude 3 years ago Great interview. Prolon's Fasting Mimicking Diet is brilliant and easy to incorporate into a yearly health plan. I have done three now, each one about 3 months apart and I feel better and better with each one.
