This list is incomplete without "The Man who knew Infinity". Thank you. 4.1K Helmut and Moshe Helmut and Moshe 1 year ago (edited) The Man Who Knew Infinity. In the mathematical community, this is the best. Faithful to the true biography of one of the top mathematicians of the 20th century. Ramanujan was right up there with John Nash for sure, almost at the level of a Grothendieck or Hilbert. "A Beautiful Mind" was a cringeworthy movie for those who really knew the story of John Nash and his accomplishments. Good Will Hunting shouldn't be on the list at all, mathematics was a marginal theme at best and they didn't write about it with any kind of real understanding. 77 Mier Beuker Mier Beuker 1 year ago The true saying is: "People have no idea what they have, until they lose it". Also, the story of Nash and his wife is by far the best, because not only is the real story even weirder than the fiction, but it is indeed real. Much like Alan Turing's story. 71 Kirk Engnath Kirk Engnath 7 months ago For the period of time when it was released 'Hidden Figures' was very moving. Then for the story line, concept of not judging s book or person by their cover 'Good Will Hunting' was incredible. In fact I feel that 'Good Will Hunting' still holds to be true today. 10 Marvin Duane Ball Marvin Duane Ball 1 year ago #1 McKenna Grace is an unbelievable young actress who is perfect for this role! She's simple, but brilliant in this part. Extremely exceptional acting to make this part very believable. She makes this part work with her acting abilities, almost grown up like an adult in this small body... 12 Magnolia Magnolia 1 year ago Nr 1 is "The man who knew infinity" because it is about a great mathematician, Ramanujan! And it talks about mathematics, not about crying over un unhappy chilhood! 424 Nader Ghodoosian Nader Ghodoosian 1 year ago (edited) Two of these movies are fiction. Srinivasan Ramanujan is a towering figure in mathematics. A century after his death, people are still finding treasures in his notebooks! Someone should make a movie about Euler, Riemann, Maxwell, or Newton. I'll watch those movies. 255 Linda Sechrist Linda Sechrist 7 months ago I enjoyed these films and appreciated the true life stories behind them I went to see Hidden Figures in a theatre 4 times while it was playing. Fascinated and wondering how many other stories about women geniuses have been kept hidden.. now looking for the film The Man Who Knew Infinity. 9 John Wilson John Wilson 1 year ago (edited) Agree with the comments that 'The Man Who Knew Infinity' should be on the list. I would put 'Hidden Figures' as my #1 followed by TMWKI as #2. I still get emotional whenever I watch the HF scene with the labelled 'Coloured' coffee pot. 83 Mike Fort Mike Fort 9 months ago I agree with 3 of them (GWH, Hidden Figures, Beautiful Mind). I'd replace the other 2 with the one everyone else has mentioned, as The Man Who Knew Infinity is not one of my favorite mathematics movies, but movies period. And although it was more about a math teacher and not necessarily a mathematician, I'll finish it up with Stand and Deliver, which was a fucking epic movie in all senses of the word. And like the others (except Good Will Hunting), was based on a true story. 10 Isaac Elijah Isaac Elijah 11 months ago Having watched the updated version, with "The Man Who Knew Infinity" as #4 on the list, I have this to say: "Thank you for adding S. Ramanujan's story to the list." Keep it up. PS.: I would wanted it to be among the first Three. Just being frank. Well done all the same. 11 j'aime j'aime 1 year ago (edited) Even in this time and age, S. Ramanujan suffered from racial discrimination as he had in his short lifetime. How can 'The Man Who Knew Infinity' be excluded in this list? 24 U.V. S. U.V. S. 1 year ago (edited) They simply MUST make a movie based on the life of Zhang (the Goldbach breaktrhough guy). That might be the greatest maths story ever. The prodigy that never was, who lived amongst the insane and never became insane, who never died of a stupid disease, who lived and worked and loved, who became an old unknown man and who would have died as an unknown man - unless... 6 Babarr Ali Babarr Ali 1 year ago Incomplete without :Ramanujan "The man who know infinity".... A true story of a man without resources.... 858 Joaquin Sosa Joaquin Sosa 10 months ago Seen all of them and liked them all. My fave has to be “A beautiful mind” the fact that you can overcome a mental disease has to be proof of how strong and smart this individual has to be. Can’t even wrap my head around it. 26 C. T. C. T. 1 year ago (edited) I haven't seen the most recent one yet but but the choice would be difficult to make between the other four. My preference would be for Hidden Figures and Imitation Game because it enabled me to discover the real people behind the story: I did not know Alan Turing, nor Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn or Mary Jackson before theses films. I discovered their difficult journey facing intolerance. I would have added to your list The Theory of Everything based on Stephen Hawkins' life. Mac Hyman Mac Hyman 1 year ago It is hard to find a mathematics movie better than The Man who knew Infinity. I can't imagine why it is not on this list. 5 Andres Pascal Andres Pascal 1 year ago Very nice. I watched them all already, including "The Man who knew Infinity" that is named in the comments. I think u ordered this list considering how good is the movie. Personally I would order it by the importance of the achievements of the persons involved in them. And in that case I would put Alan Turing first: end of WWII, Computers, AI, Computability... 3 Atheek Ameen Atheek Ameen 1 year ago The man who knew infinity should be included for sure from this list The imitation game is a must watch 14 Ferndalien Ferndalien 1 year ago It was only a TV series, but Numbers was pretty good and, for the first two seasons, introduced new mathematical concepts and how they could be applied, or were being applied, to human society. 3 Mike Nolan Mike Nolan 1 year ago Sometimes I scare myself. In the first (#5) movie I instantly recognized non-trivial zeroes as a reference to the still unsolved Riemann Hypothesis. Sheba Rashid Sheba Rashid 8 months ago The imitation game is one of if not the most emotional movie in this list. Also it is heavily based on truth. I recommend watching it. I cried the whole time 😢😢😭 2 Daniel Gonzalez Daniel Gonzalez 1 year ago (edited) "The man who knew infinity" definitively must be on this list.....and must be seen! 7 TyfoiD75 TyfoiD75 3 weeks ago Gifted is something to consider, in a long run... I would also have added "X+Y" and "The man who knew Infinity" Rowida Rowida 7 months ago Everyone is screaming about The Man Who Knew Infinity, but we NEED to talk about how brilliant "The Imitation Game" and "Good Will Hunting" were. Absolute masterpieces. 4 Cristian Martinez Cristian Martinez 1 year ago Besides “The man who knew infinity” I also recommend “Pi: faith in chaos” which is a lot less known! 15 Denielle Chapman Denielle Chapman 10 months ago I love historical movies. I love when movies are based off of real people. I loved Hidden Figures, but the problem I had with it was that about 95% of what they showed was inaccurate. 1 sk misra sk misra 2 months ago I'd be interested to know your reasons for excluding, 'the man who knew infinity', from this list. It's an entirely true story of the Indian mathematician, S. Ramanujan. His works are still the subject of Post Graduate & Doctoral studies at ivy league colleges around the world. Try checking him out on U Tube. Could your omission be because of his ethnicity?? Rochelle D'Souza Rochelle D'Souza 1 year ago 1) The man who knew infinity 2) Shakuntala Devi 2 movies that need to be added to the list 10 Lost in Kansas on a sunny day Lost in Kansas on a sunny day 10 months ago Well, this is a really good list. But there is something missing, I can't quite put my finger on it. I love that all the Math geeks chimed in! And I agree, movies about Euler, Bernoulli, Gauss, and Tesla would be awesome. Rashmitha Reddy Rashmitha Reddy 1 year ago This is incomplete without the greatest Mathematician of all time "Srinivasa Ramanujan" and his movie The man who knew Infinity. 117 Webbeachicepie Webbeachicepie 11 months ago "The Man Who Knew Infinity" is not given. The best Mathematician movie I've ever watched. The best one of them all. 32 Truth Seeker Truth Seeker 1 year ago It is surprising that this channel/show makers either did not know "The Man who knew Infinity" or do not consider it worth mentioning. Even if they put all the five of these on one side of the balance and "The Man who knew Infinity" on the other, the latter would outweigh them hands down. 19 Tushar Vats Tushar Vats 1 year ago These two people Shakuntala Devi and sir ramanujan was also acknowledged by most famous professors and mathematician of that time as well as Guinness books of world record 2 Chayan Karan 20DTPH016 Chayan Karan 20DTPH016 10 months ago The Man Who Knew Infinity is the best masterpiece movie on medieval, modern genius. Sir Yogi Ramanujan 🙏❤️ 4 Moe Ball Moe Ball 1 year ago Thank you for all the mentions of The Man Who Knew Infinity, I just watched it, truly an excellent film about a remarkable man. 22 Owen Parker Owen Parker 10 months ago After reading 1000 or so comments, I am getting the distinct impression that 'The Man Who Knew Inifinity' should have been included on this list!!! 2 califinn califinn 1 year ago After reading the comments, I have to check out "The Man Who Knew Infinity" - thank you all for the recommendation. 840 Chad Rowin Chad Rowin 8 months ago I nominate 'Gifted' should have been #1. All the others talk about the struggle, but 'Gifted' goes a step beyond. It glimpses into the price that has to be payed by these individuals and window into what they give up to achieve these great discoveries. I believe if you watch this movie you can't but moved by its story. 1 Mycah Mycah 1 year ago I love your channel and most of the time I agree with you. But I can't believe you didn't include The Man Who Knew Infinity!!!! That guy is prolly the greatest mathematician of 20th century. 5 Tim Kirwin Tim Kirwin 1 year ago (edited) Personally I didn't care that much for "The man who knew infinity". I liked all 5 of these more. IMdb agrees also. All 5 of these movies rated higher than Infinity. These movies had math in them, but were not about math. Maybe Hidden Figures uses math as a character, but it is secondary to the racial struggle at the heart of the movie. Good Will Hunting is exclusively about Will's struggle in life. Math is merely a prop. His genius could have manifested in some other discipline, and it wouldn't have changed the story much. So I disagree with the deluge of comment's about "Infinity". In fact, I'm not sure I finished it because it could not hold my attention. I will however watch it again and give it another chance. 1 78tag 78tag 12 days ago (edited) I've only seen the first clip but I know for a fact that this was one of the best ever. That little girl did a great job in this piece. (Gifted) OK - I've seen them all - 5 great picks. Thanks for this offering. Tim Ross Tim Ross 8 months ago There is a distinction between movies about great/historically significant mathematicians, and great math movies. "Stand and Deliver" is top math movie, hands down. Mickey Harp Mickey Harp 1 year ago (edited) I love this video. You simply show the clips without talking over them giving unwanted explanations and opinions. That's hard to find on YouTube nowadays. If all on this channel are like this, I'm in. Thank you. Edit ... but sadly no. Same old same old. This one was enjoyable, though. wannabe to wasabe wannabe to wasabe 8 months ago I've seen all of these except "Gifted." I will see if I can find it on a streaming service. I've loved all of these movies. Jennifer Connelly was stunningly beautiful and brilliant in "A Beautiful Mind." Russel Crowe showed his incredible talent in this movie as well. "Hidden Figures" and "The Imitation Game" being based on true stories were fascinating. "Good Will Hunting" was quite a movie for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. It could have used a lot better language though, it made me quite uncomfortable. Robin Williams was brilliant in it, so sorry we lost him. He would have probably gotten better with age. Thanks for this video, I'm happy that all of these (-1) motivated me to go to the theater when they were first released. Joemclee Manalo Joemclee Manalo 1 year ago (edited) Highly recommended: The Man who knew Infinity 5 Gifted (2017) 4 Hidden Figures (2016) 3 The Imitation Game (2014) 2 A Beautiful Mind (2001) 1 Good Will Hunting (1997) 9 Ramaraksha Ramaraksha 1 year ago I think it is criminal that Kristen Dunst never won any awards - one of the best actors we have 1 Robert Burke Robert Burke 1 year ago Stand and Deliver (I was a mathematics teacher when it first came out, and I can remember my students' saying "Sir, you have to go watch it.") Great story. Great movie. 2 Nidhyan Education Nidhyan Education 1 year ago ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’ - a story of genius Ramanujan, should be at the top. 5 Aryan Verma Aryan Verma 11 months ago WOW!...not a single comment without recommending "The Man who knew Infinity" Feels so damn proud to be an Indian!! Don't recall that it focuses on the math so much, but it's there. The basic theme is the same as the movies shown here: genius has to battle the odds to prove what others are unable or unwilling to understand. 22 Nhil IsWatchingYou Nhil IsWatchingYou 6 months ago the Imitation Game is one of those non-romance movies that made me cry.. my favorite in this list.👍👍👍👍👍👍 Atakan Tursunov Atakan Tursunov 3 months ago "The Accountant" with Ben Affleck deserved to be here in this list 1 Jewel Heart Jewel Heart 10 months ago (edited) #4 should be #1 as she (Katherine Johnson) was a real person and a genius who broke so many barriers. อัครัตน์ จารุมณี อัครัตน์ จารุมณี 1 year ago (edited) The Man Who Knew Infinity should have replaced Goodwill Hunting for top 5. Good Will Hunting (1997) 278 communiTV Harriet1822 Harriet1822 1 year ago "Good Will Hunting" follows every Hollywood plot, as described by Ace of Spades: "young man comes to terms with being totally awesome". The Bourne Identity, Spider Man, etc. Infantile power fantasies. There was no Math in "Good Will Hunting". The bar scene was a great takedown of the education industry, though. "Proof" was better, but not in the class of "A Beautiful Mind" or "The Imitation Game" or the Rmanujan biography. jitu03 gaming jitu03 gaming 1 year ago Srinivasan Ramanujan the greatest mathematician in the whole history The man who knew infinity 4 Jean Decrusis Jean Decrusis 3 months ago "The Imitation Game" was about decoding a complex machine. It is also about the life of the man who broke it; his genius, his life's tragedy and misfortune of being born at the wrong time and the hypocrisy of an ungrateful government who owes him a won war. sachin Dubey sachin Dubey 7 months ago RAMANUJAN: THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY ♾ story about a self taught Indian man And his brilliance Is STILL THE BEST CHOICE 3 AMH Journal AMH Journal 1 year ago My favourite is A BEAUTIFUL MIND ❤️ He managed to control his psychiatric problem without the help of medication. Beautiful mind, indeed. 7 Scottie Copasetic Scottie Copasetic 10 months ago (edited) The Man Who Knew Infinity should perhaps be the #1 overall pick for Mathematician movies. They're still trying to proof remainder of Srinivasa Ramanujan theorems. We certainly wouldn't have the same grasp on string/M theory, dark matter & black holes etc., if it weren't for this man's incredible mind. It's a shame he got sick & died at such a young age or who knows what they'd still be working on from his notes. ꧁RadicalRick꧂ ꧁RadicalRick꧂ 1 year ago I own all the DVD except "Gifted" and "The Man Who Knew Infinity" << I didn't know about these two will be purchasing them ASAP. Two multiply you had to select the required digits with both hands and repeatedly press all the keys at the same time. Later style machine had a rotating handle which wound clockwise and anti clockwise to add, subtract, multiply and divide and a shift key. To cut down on how often you had t0 wind the handle there were short cut you could use. To multiply x 9, you entered the number, would the handle anti clockwise to subtract the number once, then shift left once and wind the number once adding ten times the number to the result.
