We’re born, we grow old, we die. It’s a rhythm long considered inevitable. But is it? Or is aging merely a disease awaiting a cure? Will science one day stave off aging or even reverse it? Join us as four top scientists explore the biology of aging and recent breakthroughs that, according to some, could have people living healthfully to 120 or beyond by the end of this century. Would you want to?
This program is part of the Big Ideas series, supported by the John Templeton Foundation.

From the talks of David it appears people will soon start to have a life span of 500 years..and we need people to have longer lives particularly brilliant minds like Brian and David and Einsteins of the world to invent new things and take human civilization to further advancements.

It seems that the differences is ageing between species can be measured by the rates at which they accumulate genetic mutations over the species typical lifetime, and that correlates very well with their expected lifespan. So now I know why my beloved Beagle is ageing so much faster than I am 8-(

Maybe an entirely different approach should get discussed. E.g. Science just told the world "hey peeps, we got some things wrong and from what we can tell everything actually is possible"
Crispr is already the genome Rockstar tool, I'm very curious if consciousness research will soon prove that emotional and mental good health is the key to youth and adaptation.

Resveratrol is widely known for its renowned beneficial biological effects, namely involving its chemopreventive and antioxidant properties. However, some studies have documented that it may behave as a pro-oxidizing agent. Thus, paradoxically, it may also have implication in pathology of several diseases.

1:05:20 “Life expectancy for 10s of thousand of years was between 25 and 35” isn’t that just the average life expectancy due to infant mortality?
I was under the impression if you made it to adulthood you could expect to live quite a long life. It dipped later when we started to live closer together in towns and villages due to the spread of disease.

Professor Greene from the perspective of pure biology as a science is key in the structure of telomeres and there is physics stronger, in fact at the same time not because the transfer of information during the evolution of reality the best solution is genetics or awareness of existence we call life ♾️

I think the concept of “reverse ageing” is a misnomer. We should instead think of it as “how to elongate cell renewal” . IMO, the solution wouldn’t be necessarily to destroy sescescent cells but to keep creating the production of new cells. Something that could be akin to accelerated healing. And imo that is related to the pineal gland and the thyroid…

What's the bottom line? Can human beings soon be able to take a pill or pills every morning allowing humans to live longer but also look younger? For example can a pill make a 60 year old look like a 30 year old again? And also how much longer could people live in a healthy way without the signs of aging? I mean if you could live 50 years longer on average let's say people start living until 120 but only start aging around the age of 115 years old that would be an achievement but if it's really only helping the current elderly population live with less diseases like dementia...that would be an amazing accomplishment and blessing....but not a process of dealing or prolonging the life span of human beings. To me a serious accomplishment in this area would mean you could appear to be 30 years old for not only ten years but for maybe 50 or 100 hundred years!!! But is this impossible???
Also around 47:50....one gentleman spoke about his taking of the drug Resveratrol along with some yogurt to help break it down in the body. This he says has had no bad side effects and helps to remove the scratches on the DVD analogy and also helps a person with a bad diet and also protects the ends of your telemere things. So where can the public get this drug? Or when? Or is it only for the very rich and top 1% of millionaires and billionaires ? Which I feel no doubt is the case which kind of sucks because I myself am hanging in there but I'm still a million bucks shy of being a millionaire 😅
A longer life span shouldn't hurt the human population on earth if human beings can successfully travel in space to other planets that have similar characteristics for human beings to be able to live on. I wish there was a technology that enabled human beings to record every waking moment and like a computer file away and save all their memories. So that one day you could go back and remember their friends and loved ones who passed away. My memory is terrible in that way. 😕 I personally welcome more time to be alive just to be able to fix mistakes from the past and hopefully get things right!

The oldest person on Earth just died a couple of days ago. She was 119, they didn;;t say how many days, that's important b/c the oldest to die was 122 I forget how many days but she was French and smoked united she was 90. The 2nd oldest was also 122 but the only thing I remember about her is that she ate 3 eggs for breakfast every single day since she was a teenager. The 3rd oldest was 119 and since I dont know the amount of days lived past 119, Im not sure if she is still in 3rd place or if she got bumped to number 4 instead. The only thing I remember about her is that she was another smoker.

I am still concerned about the societal implications of advancements in this area. Without rigorous regulation, it is implausible that benefits would fall also to those surviving under the heavier weights of SDOH. I imagine the scientists and Pharmas involved have big dollar signs in their eyes…and rightly so. Ethically, though, the benefit must be shared without regard to socio-economic status or likely risk further friction in class and culture biases.

Along with a much longer life by these means, should also include the realistic painless OPTION to die if the person wants... a longer poor hungry existence is nothing most people in the world would want... seems again that this is a first world "problem". Most people just want to eat and be healthier with the years we already got. For most people in the world, MANY more years getting up and spending it at a production line in a factory, not more joy, just more work not more travel etc. Imagine those depressed, or mentally ill people with twice the lifespan!!

Very interesting discussion! This is something that needs more debate. Thank you!
If we took less prescription/non prescription drugs, ate better, slept better, did more exercise, got away from readiation, we'd live longer in health. We don't need to prolongue our lifespan. What for? We are not destined to do this, in my oppinion. Life isn't supposed to be easy and naturally there is an end to it.
Who would want to live forever without losing their humanity / go insane storing so much memory? To watch more cable TV? To work for more years before retiring?
Very interesting also to think about the social perspective mentioned.
If a shot of for example, remdezivir, costs $ 3,000 or more, who will have access to all this new technologY?
Is it meant for future generations not to age? Are we moving towards a "Brave New World", where wealthy parents will decide upon their children 's health?
So many questions... Appreciate the colloqium.

You lost me at aliens. Don't get me wrong, the probability of us being the only living things in the universe is minuscule BUT presuming they have to solve the aging problem is absurd. To live evolving in a different way, the concept of time or space itself might be inconceivable and absurd. Who is to say that they even understand our concept of aging or death?

This particular topic is great for exposing how uniquely short sighted science can be after boiling itself down to pure data points. The consequences of anti aging technology would be absolutely disastrous on society if it was unleashed before a total and complete societal and cultural reform the likes of which hasn't happened since the end of feudalism.

Laura and Elissa started in a very disrespectful, judgmental and nasty way. It wasn’t necessary and they could expedite their aging process as far as I am concerned. I don’t agree with everything David says but would never start the conversation by claiming it was crazy or dumb for him to have his views on aging. And they ended up contradicting their initial statements that were meant to sound or seem as careful and realistic expectations. And Elissa: you don’t need to live past 65. Your lack of future presence can help the earth. Do what works for you and we can figure out the rest. The women want to seem caring and it is off-putting. What would happen if we, without much interventions, started, for whatever reasons, to live to an average age of 200? Would you then end your life at 100? It may not be sustainable for all of us to live that long but we, the crazy ones, would like to have that option. Again, Elissa: don’t worry about what is wise for us after you are gone. You and Laura can check out at your retirement age. Give the earth a break.

The debate format is great, but the political propagnda talk from Elissa was tiresome and annoying. Have you thought about the fact that maybe you saying every second sentence that we're about to die in a horrible climate change catastrophy is contributing massively to the anxiety problem that we have and you've mentioned? Or you saying that there is overpopulation - there isn't BTW, and there are no scientific consensuses about it - and that people should not bring children contributes to that? Or you saying that there are models about climate - hint: there aren't good ones because climate is super difficult to predict and we can barely get the weather broadcast correct for 2 weeks, let alone the months and years that you're talking about with the climate crisis.
This was so fun to listen to all of the others on the panel, but every time she opened her mouth she just made me angrier at her for spewing marxist propagnda in the name of science, even though the theories she's basing her assumptions and conclusion on have barely any real scientific basis to them, at least about the things that aren't related to the discussion at hand.

the answer is iv younger blood with younger DNA messengers RNA and DNA proteins this blood must have a larger count or DNA repair proteins and stem cell for all cells and mitochondria repair stem cells on top of that scientists need to make advancements with medical machines that can read blood proteins for home use on top of that scientist need to make advancement in medical machines that clean the blood like dialysis machines as external organs like liver and kidneys on top of that they need to make automatic hormone adjustments like the continues glucose monitoring systems .

Only 9 minutes in and my excitement turned to eye rolls - wtf is up with the two middle people saying essentially that aging is inevitable and fine and we can die without much issue during life?? Why are you here??? Literally there’s no reason we have to die, there’s no reason to view death as nAtURaL just because it’s what we’ve had to accept so far. It’s ridiculous to say that or not try to push to ending aging, it is an affliction, it’s “natural” just because we evolved like that but in that sense I guess houses are not natural. Aka just because we improve our situation, doesn’t make us some against nature force.

why group "not wanting to have kids" with "lack of meaning" and depression? what's wrong with not wanting to have kids? that doesn't necessarily mean having a bleak view?

I'm shocked by the two women who feel that aging and death is a natural part of life. Moronic! I'm so tired of hearing people say that and it makes no sense. There was a time when heart attacks and heart disease were natural and nothing could be done. Perhaps we should have stopped there and just accepted our fate. Fortunately, we have conquered many diseases and aging is just another one that must fall by the wayside. To advocate of a long health span and then death is idiotic. So your perfectly healthy and then you drop dead? It only seems reasonable that if you improve health span that you will improve lifespan and when you get the far and still decide to let people die, it will the equivalent of murder.

Sounds like a bunch of fluff to me all talk no action. And look at these comments people are talking about the quality of the video and obscure information that’s unrelated to the topic I don’t have to watch it all the way through to feel what was going on think use your bread.

NO ONE SUGGESTS HOW THESE SUPER OLD PEOPLE WILL LIVE? ONCE THEY BECOME NON EARNERS, SOCIETY MUST SUPPORT THEM OR THEY MUST HAVE ACCUMULATED ENOUGH TO DO SO. AS POINTED OUT, THE POOR WILL NOT HAVE DONE THAT FOR THEMSELVES SO DO WE PLAN A SOCIETY WHERE THE FEW WILL SUPPORT THE MASSES, NOT ONLY MASSES OF POOR BUT NEW MASSES OF THE OLD. OR ARE THEY ASSUMING LONGER AGE WILL ALSO MEAN LONGER WORKING LIVES? SO THESE 150 YEAR OLDS WILL WORK UNTIL 135? IT IS THE PARADISE OF THE FEW WHILE THE MANY PERISH AS USUAL

What happened? There is no more a second law of thermodynamics? Even the universe will age and die ( dark energy, black holes) All thermodynamic machines will have increasing entropy.

In the end the two women that are inside their boxes what to drink the Koolaide. The point is the medical studies show regeneration in tissue. End of story, it just a matter of time to get it to work on all tissues. Then we focus on a new set of problems that interfere with lifespan. The climate issues that are being addressed, let’s not ask medical doctors to analyze factors they are not up to speed on. Take politics out of the discussion.

Wow, and you're not sponsored by metformin, GNC grifters, or aunt Jenny's Parlour Shoppe at all? You just happened to stumble across 4 prominent scientists who like to practise and legitimize the age old craft of hocking l'huile du serpent? This episode made me uncomfortable with the scientists saying, "I choose to do X aith this dose at this frequency.. but it's not researched at all so you shouldn't do it too... But trust me on this other thing, I'm an expert scientist otherwise."
It came across as a bit sleezy tbh. Long time fan, watched every video at least once. I'm no troll or hater, but if I were publishing content I'd want to know the opinions of the people who give them tons of views more than a click through. Just saying
