love love this arrangement. I think that he made a good job with these song because he don't miss the essence of tango. Sometimes I heard in foreign movies, some arrangements of different tangos and its definitely not tango. Makes me proud, as an Argentinian to listen our music around the world. Itzhak Perlman, you did it mate!!!! I can hear some of our traditional tango but at the same time I can hear some of Piazzolla kind of sound.

I am 57 yrs old now, but I remember very well a master class he did where I was studying violin at the University of Minnesota . He was not only an amazing violinist, but a warm , patient, and delightful person . I feel incredibly fortunate to have had that opportunity.

Itzhak Perlman gave a concert in Utica, NY, which my Israeli wife and I attended. We invited him to our home in New Hartford, where we ate dinner. Although he spoke Hebrew with my wife, he spoke English with the rest of the family. He was both charming and unassuming, even helping with the dishes, after dinner. We were so privileged to have met him.

According to Wikipedia, he is still married to original wife, mother of his 5 children. Didn't let fame make him arrogant. Bravo, sir! And wife Toby, also a classically trained violinist, is still his strong support, cheerleader, and ground to reality. Brava, madame!

First heard him play Berg Concerto at Ford Auditorium in my hometown of Detroit. Sat in second row and had my mind blown. Next saw him at Carnegie Hall (Mendelssohn) a few years later when he toured with Detroit Symphony. My DSO violin teacher brought me backstage (“wanna meet him??”) and he talked to me in his dressing room. Such a great guy and so funny. Just a super nice person. Got to have lunch with him years later when I was his driver with the University of Missouri concert series. We ate pizza and joked around for over an hour. Years later, we spoke backstage at Avery Fisher Hall and he remembered our pizza lunch a decade earlier. Supreme mensch.

Man, itzhak is such an amazing human being...i mean look how big his wife smiles when she talks about him. I will never come even close to doing anything at the skill level that he plays at but; if can approach life with the charm, wit and, resolve that itzhak does, i think i can make a difference

I first saw Mr Perlman perform at Kingsbury Hall in Salt Lake City. I was 13 years old and was accompanied by my violin teacher. His performance changed me forever. His sound became a much loved addiction I tried profusely to emulate. Thank you for your influence, magic, integrity, and musical genius!

Thank you! I remember the first time I ever saw Mr. Perlman. My mom and I watched a whole concert of his, probably 30+ years ago, with a full orchestra no doubt. He was in a wheelchair I remember. He played all the classical pieces faultlessly from memory which faked me out. But when he played a couple of hoedown/fiddle tunes at the end, THAT blew me TOTALLy away. Usually you get one or the other but not both. I've been around some excellent mountain fiddlers but this was mind boggling. All I can say is that Mr. Perlman has a God given gift and is using it to the utmost. Thank you again!

I love that beginning. He starts with humor, but it also tells me that he realized how people may not be able to appreciate his playing if he plays too fast!
He's not just a virtuoso , but also a performer.

First time I heard him play 20 + years ago I knew he was the best, I never heard anyone make the violin sound like it should at all times, seemingly without effort. I was playing in heavy metal bands back then, but now I only play classical and Itzhak is a huge reason why.

Absolutely amazing. To play like that, the instrument must become a part of the body itself. "ordinary" pieces must be a breeze for Perlman. Genius. A true Artist and also a sort of Athlete. Bravo maestro. And much respect for the discipline and hard work to achieve such a level of musicianship.

Violins are so emotional. Either painfully tragic, or gorgeously happy and playful. I prefer the tragic tunes. Always been hopelessly melancholic. Itzhak Perlman was the man whom jump started this love affair between me and string instruments.

In the early days of TV, if a renowned artist (music, opera, ballet,) appeared, my father would say "here, watch this they are the best in the world" and with no formal education, I must say, his appreciation for all things artistic and amazing was spot on. So, Ed Sullivan and others like Bernstein's Young People's Concerts allowed me to see many of the artists, now gone, whose videos I can often find on YouTube.

We live in a crazy world these days - power-hungry asshole politicians, capitalists, greedy individuals....and then, we have people like Itzhak Perlman who are above it all. We need more like him. Sadly, it's like it's not in vogue anymore to be that way. Has everyone watched the film about him that came out in 2017? Quite an incredible masterpiece.... His wife Toby is given almost equal time in it!

What a fantastic documentary!! Thank you, Allegro Films. It was so much better than the recent PBS "American Masters" on Maestro Perlman. He's such a 'regular guy' in so many ways, just one who's a world-renowned violin virtuoso. And so funny: talking about falling down/sliding into taxis, cooking/dieting, joking around during playback of recording, and of course having fun with his students. I especially love being able to see musicians during rehearsal, recording, teaching etc.

Nice to see. A friend of mine who edited his initial recording said his large hands made a nightmare to edit together with the different tuning from each take as a result of larger hands and tuning variance. :). My violin teacher was taught by him. A. great violinist.

while I rewatch this I keep wishing he had a “side hustle” as a comedian where he uses his instruments as part of his act. For example, his first story about playing in echo chambers was hilarious and non-musicians should have found this just as funny as musicians.

Dear Itzhak, a few years ago I thought I was communicating with you on messenger and negotiated a tour of Australia with your (hmm) manager directly. I had the venues and orchestras booked and everything in place, only to find out I was being scammed. I can't tell you how disappointed I was, and also terribly embarrassed. Everyone had been looking forward to the tour. If ever you want to come "down under" it would be my privilege to arrange a tour (we could also tour Asia on the way through to break up the long distance). Take care Meastro, you have no idea how much you were missed. Best wishes Michael

As I pointed out at 55:59 - the beautiful "flying staccato" of Mr Lin, he was also pointed out to me as a bit of a ..."toucher-up-er" by one of my friends who performed for him when she was in the orchestra. He couldn't keep his hands to himself. If that's true, then that's a real shame.... but I can't verify this. I hope he has more honour than someone who would do that.
It was true though that Joshua Bell flirted with one of my friends... but he refused to stop. He just kept nagging to "do things" with my friend. I believe her too. She's not one to make this sort of thing up.

It is extremely difficult to get any sound out of a stringed instrument such as the violin or cello. I compose 4-part fugues, and I'm extremely good at the theory; but I can't play a note on any of those instruments. The bow just doesn't work for me. I guess I'll have to sell my soul to the devil, like Paganini.

42:00 One of these guys said from the beginning that "If I have to step over dead bodies of other violinists, I will do so, in order to have a career." Well...that's why one of them was far more successful than the other, and was a FAR better violinist than the other and didn't have to step over any dead bodies.

Paganini 5 like nothing is amazing but creating the sound of a difficult room is even more amazing to me. He made what the audience would hear in that bad room... a terrible singer will never be more grating than a great singer purposefully singing poorly.

I've always liked Itzak very much for his talant. playing skills etc. and that he's in most cases "Just a regualr guy. The reason the old violins cant be reproduced today is the wood. They used wood from very old growth trees that had gone through a mini ice age so the rings of the trees were very close together and the wood very dense. Those trees are all long gone.

You can make a violin sound as good as a Strad! They just say all this because of sentiment. I have listened to many high end violins and they all sound remarkably similar. In fact blind tests show there isn't any real difference. They say the same thing with guitar and it is all not true whatsoever. Strad made superior Violins for his time but even then there were other very high end violins which are just as good today. When we are talking about the violin were are only talking about the body as the neck can be replaced and even the fingerboard and bridge gets replaced many times over 300 yrs of course.

My father played in one the great symphony orchestras during the Heifetz era. He heard most of the great soloists of that time period. . To him, there was no one like Heifetz. He was in a class by himself.

Itzhak Perlman always regarded Heifetz the way Pavarotti thought of Caruso. I wouldn't say that Pavarotti was 2nd to any other Italian tenor, even Caruso, but there is not doubt in my mind that Heifetz was the greatest violinist of all time. You may like the style of another violinist more, but when it comes to intonation, tempo, technical brilliance & nuances that come with portameno, vibrato, & phrasing he was truly unique. Perlman indeed knows what he's talking about.

I keep finding more and more verifications for why I fell in love with Heifetz the first time I heard him in1953. For my birthday I received a copy of Sarasate's Zapateado. I still have that 45, tho it no longer sounds very dood. I began adding his LP vinyls in 54 when I got my first HiFi. Itzhak Perlman has replaced him.
God's Violinist was my favorite. Miss his touch as much as I miss being able to hear the last octave and a half of the 88 keys.
RIP Jascha

Years ago, I was playing a show with the great drummer, Louie Bellson.
He told the band with great pride that he had an X-ray of his arm taken by an orthopedic surgeon and the surgeon told him that the X-ray looked exactly like the one that was taken of Jascha Heifetz's arm.

Do you have the complete PBS program,of which this is a part? I remember seeing it many years ago. Yes, it`s amazing that when you listen to the Heifetz arrangements of Foster or Gershwin, you can hear all the lyrics.

I know how you feel-there was a performance by Perlman at the Hollywood Bowl with Zubin Mehta conducting that was broadcast in the late 70's that I would love to have a chance to see again. Included were the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso and Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy.

I didn`t watch the program from the beginning, and unfortunately couldn`t record it. Over the years I had hoped to see it again,or maybe purchase a tape or DVD.

@sharlesin Thanks for telling me about that. This video is taken from "Behind the Music, A Video companion to Itzhak Perlman's Personal Picks". It also came with a cd of the pieces he talks about (and as described, personally selected). The Mendelssohn last movement from the Ed Sullivan Show is included on this video. Was that also on the PBS program? I'll have to do a bit more research...

@absloko there are two Heifetz arrangements of songs, the first "It Ain't Necessarily So" composed by George Gershwin and after about one minute in as Mr. Perlman says "I Dream of Jeannie" which was written by Stephen Foster.

It lasted about 30 min, about 15 years ago. Perlman talked about Violinists who composed for the violin, Sarasate, Wieniawski, Kreisler etc. He demonstrated how they wrote in ways that played to their strengths on the violin. Because of his large hands,he showed how he had difficulty with some movements of the left hand. My VCR wasn`t working at the time, and I couldn`t record it.

same thing happened to me at a heifetz concert 25 years ago, except heifetz was gracious enough to let me play for him. after hearing me, he smashed his violin in little pieces and vowed never to play again for in my sound he had "heard the true voice of god". i was like, "aww, shucks, heifie", all embarrassed.

well....i might say heifetz produced notes most of the time....amazing technall abilities, but one was fascinated of this "technicall brilliance"... there are many pieces a "mortal" perlman, a francescatti, a kogan plays nicer, and yet not technically worser....
..and hence i might say, some there and there, kogan and francescatti, were technically even better than heifetz.

Hi folks, does anyone know what is the music which sounds in background, specially the part begining at 1:01 - it looks like a piece for violin and piano? Who's the composer? Very beautiful piece. Thanks in advance!

Mr. Perlman doesn't realize that he has better taste and musicality than Heifetz himself.

Heifetz played like a machine, his violin playing has never appealed to me. I find much more feelings in Itzhak Perlman's interpretations and I really like his phrasing and timbre.

Heifitz was a gentleman? In those now famous masterclass videos he is so discourteous to a prospective student who auditions for him and parodies his playing. Somewhere in the world was a person who was ready to jump off a bridge the way Heifitz made fun of him. This was totally unnecessary, especially for such a great player as he was. Give me Milstein or Kayler or Szeryng as great players who knew how to be gentlemen and still perform at the highest levels ever heard.

why does itzhak perlman have to endure listening to another person playing the piece, and he was probably sick of listening to it, i mean he has already played a million times (i stopped playing violin myself because i was sick of playing the same piece over and over). so give itzhak a break,
