The key issue of rate limiting sources of the amino acid leucine is discussed (yes plants are low leucine). Also the PhDs who have worked under Don and their projects are introduced and much much more. It's also worth noting that this sensitizing effect can last for 24-48 hours, and i believe some data even suggests it to be a longer window than that but i dont know it off hand. Anyways, the most important thing in my opinion when discussing protein is the overall quantity that one gets because above a certain threshold it no longer matters if one eats only plants. Conversely if one eats only animal base proteins but they still don't eat enough then they're in a state of inadequacy. In trained/training people Morton and colleagues suggested a threshold of 0.75 grams per lb (1.6g/kg) and Nunes et al suggest that in conjunction with resistance training a range of 1.2-1.59 grams/kg may also be effective. 24 Reply 4 replies @ScottWDoyle @ScottWDoyle 3 months ago Interesting... but not sure what the takeaway is here... I see some people walking away from this thinking they need to eat 2x soy compared to meat, when the reality (and Layman would acknowledge this) is that you need a balance of amino acids which is not difficult to get as long as you don't eat the same exact thing all day every day. Meanwhile, Attia says very little about our epidemic of fiber, potassium, vitamin E, folate deficiencies and how some more plant protein sources can easily solve those. 2 Reply 2 replies @tatywork9126 @tatywork9126 6 months ago what about fish? why does it have to be red meat. 7 Reply 5 replies @paulfiedler9128 @paulfiedler9128 6 months ago Don Layman should sit down and talk to Stanford's Professor Christopher Gardner about protein. Both of these men are tops in their field when it comes to speaking about diet and protein and both of them couldn't be further apart on daily protein requirements and the bioavailability of plant protein. I think people should consider that Don Layman is from the farming industry and is most likely pro-cattle and hog farmer. People have to realize that just because Peter Attia is speaking to Don Layman, Don Layman is just one man with one opinion which is his own. There are many very intelligent men in his field who NO NOT agree with his findings. Peter Attia should be fair and have people like Professor Christopher Gardner and maybe even Dr. Michael Greger on his podcast to share THEIR findings. Don Payman should not be considered the final word on anything. 62 Reply 10 replies @Slizz @Slizz 6 months ago This Protein is better than this because of Diaas and because of Pdcaas ... In time and that's even when our soil is being or having problems with nitrate issues so the argument is not about protein vs. Protein it's more or less the health aspect meaning if you're doing a carnivore diet is lacking lots of beneficial fibers and phytonutrients to which meat wouldn't really give you and meet would cause other things and it's also how that meat is cooked is it carcinogenic is it being grilled is it being fried what type of oil so the scope of Health goes further than just comparing meat protein vs. Plant protein Reply @zest6932 @zest6932 3 months ago Oh common..just eat what u like in limited portions and u'll be fine..for the average human being food is a source of energy and nothing beyond that.. 1 Reply @cornstar1253 @cornstar1253 6 months ago Red meat is what we evolved on. Junk, misfolded proteins can cause long term chronic health problems. The body can recycle junk proteins (autophagy) back into the base amino acids to then make new proteins. Excess dietary proteins decrease the body's need to recycle these junk proteins. Do you need extra protein to be a bodybuilder? .....maybe. Will extra protein above 0.8g/km body weight help you live longer? ...probably not. Longevity is associated with low protein diets. Of course, anyone watching will automatically deduct from this that animal protein is better. When the truth is there is no such a thing as protein deficiency in those getting sufficient calories. We are over consuming protein, and therefore 'quality' or its absorption is totally irrelevant. The planet needs people to eat more plants. And that's why honest conversation in this area is needed. Growth hormone and IGF-1 enhance muscle and cognitive performance but this comes at a cost: longevity. Reduced growth hormone and IGF-1 increase lifespan by increasing the expression of genes involved in stress resistance but at an expensive cost when it comes to muscles and brain. What can be beneficial in the acute can be quite harmful in the chronic. It's not just a strict tradeoff. If you upregulate maintenance and repair, you need less IGF-1 and mTOR to create the same effect as when maintenance and repair are downregulated. The dose, response, and the structure of the cycles matter more than the whether or not it's active acutely. I just finished having my 2nd carpal tunnel surgery at 31 years old. My first one was at 29 years old. Im a warehouse worker and have worked with my hands a lot over the years. I also have been working out since 16 although I do not think that caused my issue. I worked for Amazon for 4 years and that is when my first surgery occurred before my 3 year mark. 1st surgery was successful although took 3-4 months to fully recover and get rid of the numbness. After recovery it felt stronger than before. I work for a different company now and started having issues in may, waking up in pain every 1-2 hours. It was only 2 fingers this time that went numb but underwent another surgery. I’m now 1 month post surgery and start physical therapy next week. If this does not work for me, is igf1 treatment worth looking into? I have been doing research on that and PRP injections. I’m only 31 married just had my first child and have a long time to retire but do not want to have to go through another surgery. I’m curious what your option on this is. Thank you. Reply @FLJD427 @FLJD427 5 years ago What about a life strategy of putting on massive muscle in youth when one is at prime health and immune function then in later life phases go into a muscle sustainment strategy that is lower total stress. I suspect that there's an optimum "formula" for balancing grown, recovery, reproduction capacity and longevity based on TIME/AGE. In other words as one gets older we can presume that they have many impaired functions - reduce telomere protective end caps on DNA, wear and tear of "life" in general from oxidative stress, toxin build up in live and body-fat due to accumulated ingestion and exposure of toxins in food and atmosphere/environment etc. At some point, as a person ages, if one wants to optimize "longevity", presuming that they have started off with excellent LBM in youth and low body fat then a good strategy would be to "coast" on the momentum of that muscle put on in youth at a minimal "sustainment" or maintenance level of exercise so a not to over train the body with too intense exercise simultaneous to induce more wear-and-tear and oxidative stress and higher risk to getting a disease (esp Cancer) due to stressed immune and repair systems. Thoughts? Any studies on this risk-reward trade space? This idea comes from the Soma Theory of aging and longevity as it relates to optimizing: Growth, Repair, Reproduction and Longevity. 7 Reply 3 replies @fatkat444 @fatkat444 10 years ago Thanks. This is more than guessing in my opinion .im 35 with a ifg of 100 naturally and it has been around that naturally for me since my early 20's. When i fast which is every day for about 16-18 hrs igf 1 has never raised but maybe 10 points if im lucky. When i cut which is on average 5-6 months every year there is maybe a rise in igf 1 by 5 point if im lucky . when i am in a calorie surplus to gain lean mass along with training . ifg1 stays the same which is for about 8 months our of the year. my diet is always well balanced full of fiber . There is nothing in my experince that is going to alter you genetics for a higher igf1 naturally vs taking somthing like a peptide . I take MK 677 and it take me from 100 to 200-230 for IGF. Just like anything else , it should not be abused . At leves of IGF 1 100 or below i feel sluggish , fat gain is easier , Fat storage is around my main organs , brain function is slower , sleep is worse , skin is worse , hair is thinner , the daily need for afternoon coffee , bones and muscles are more ache , just about everyint in life is worse . Just taking the levels to 200 changes all of this for the better . You decide what you want i guess , My thought is just be responsible with it . I decided to read the study in question, published by Aging Cell, It appears that the study references "humans" in its conclusion a couple of times while also specifically stating that the lower IGF-1 levels were shown to be beneficial ONLY to women, and there was NO difference for men. Its misleading at best though true with respect to no positive lifespan impact, particularly confusing in the way it has been citied by media as "HGH shows opposite intended effect" (like WSJ, ect). Another study needs to be done examining why the men and women responded differently. Though the study had 75% women, there were close to 200 participants and it seems that there may be differences in how men and women respond to HGH. Its more clear that HGH does nothing to extend lifespan in either men or women, but that's not why people take it. There seems to be an overarching and arguably well intended govt interest in the relation to curbing cancer, thus leading me to believe that this NIH study is being put forth as a "HGH promotes/can increase risk of cancer, therefore bad, period" type of logic. What about the notion that it may have no positive impact on lifespans of men (perhaps negative for those predisposed to cancer), but may have body degeneration prevention benefit, while also showing some negative side effects? The US govt would never fund such a study, correct? http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/acel.12213/full 3 Reply 1 reply @noumay @noumay 8 months ago what's your views of low dose HGH, for gradual body building and slowing aging, I am 53, beginning to feel the effects of aging?? what's your dose recommendations? Reply 1 reply @TheTwsa @TheTwsa 1 year ago BUT.... when GH is elevated due to fasting, it seems that the IGF-1 is not raised, maybe due to the fact, that no sugar in blood is needed to be taken care of. I believe I read that a young person in their teens and twenties naturally produce the equivalent of about 2iu’s hgh per day. This drops over time and an older person in their 70’s may only produce the equivalent of a half to 1iu per day. You wouldn’t need to increase that by 100 or 1000 times to get their levels up to a healthy range. 2 to 4 times that amount would be sufficient. Is it possible that hgh therapy or using a secretagog like Ibutamoren could bring a person up to healthy levels without shortening their life? Pro Body builders only take 8-15iu’s per day of synthetic HGH. That’s only 4 to 8 times the natural levels of a young person. I imagine if you took 100 times the natural level of HGH it would be devastating to your health. Isn’t that exactly what was done to the mice and worms? No wonder they died quickly. Maybe I’m missing something. I’m open to correction on this. 7 Reply 7 replies @levhen @levhen 4 months ago holy shit this was straight to the point and done well. Reply @JCarpMD @JCarpMD 3 years ago I tend to focus on IGF-1 in explaining this to my patients. It's not unreasonable to check your IGF-1 levels, like I do on my patients on dietary strategies for disease reversal. You want a value between 100-160. For those that are low, one can increase animal protein slightly and recheck and can get it in normal value that maintains decent muscle mass and doesn't lead to risks of dementia, CVD, and sarcopenia. I made special note of this in a video on my channel called Protein 101. I, of course, agree with the use of polyphenols and exercise which is essential as we age. Getting IGF-1 in a good range is very important for those with a proactive stance on aging and performance and is a good way to gauge how much protein you actually need. Elderly folks often have lower levels even with what appears to be adequate intake, in those cases, smart and guided instruction on increasing animal protein intake or select plant proteins can help. So my suggestion is to not take growth hormone rather do exercise and sprouting which will lead you to longevity. 7 Reply 6 replies @philipgalindo @philipgalindo 5 years ago Would it be a significant impact on your life span if you just did a 60 day IGF booster? Reply @jimmcfarlane9711 @jimmcfarlane9711 3 years ago Similar to the way people process caffeine differently, some people need to increase IGF-1 and others should focus on reduction. One problem is the further down the rabbit hole one explores- much of the available data is contradictory. In other words one study reports a substance increases IGF-1 while another study reports the same substance has no discernible impact on IGF-1. For example it's said that meat increases levels of IGF-1 in the body. We often read that over consumption of red meat is detrimental to health. It follows that articles on the internet state red meat increases IGF-1. But then researching the subject in depth you'll find contradictory information stating that all meat except red meat increase IGF-1. Someone is right - who? I suspect many of the conclusions reported are based on who funds the study. Did she change her mind ? Reply @fireteamomega2343 @fireteamomega2343 5 years ago Decreased igf is associated with higher mortality rates as is high igf levels homeostasis is preferable. Really it's just a matter of functionality feedback and action from your liver which produces it. I wouldn't dose igf-1 if you're a raging alcoholic or have abnormal liver function. Chances are it will cause more harm then benefit. Use at times you naturally produce it such as before bedtime or after a workout creates a systemic negative feedback loop creating suppression. In the morning using low supplemental doses is probably the best time and application for exogenous use. Oh and the link to cancer is that there isn't one. Certain types of cancer bind to igf1 receptors thus leaving a higher circulation level. Receptors are what actually involve cellular process. Meaning igf1 has nothing to do with it it's just a signal for it. In march this year I started again on beans and whole plant foods at night (only boiled cooked no fats no salt) and during. I am even stronger now as I expected, only fruit during the day. So yes, protein is important but you need to train a lot to make sense to take more and the elderly study proves that. The elderly were most definitely not making huge amount of effort. On top of all the above, I train every single day and some days twice, train hard, when I was 100% fruitarian and now the same. Point is most people don't need isolated protein, I would definitely be stronger if I had it but it's not healthy, so I'm happy to beat people that take it and tell them they are cheaters. Whole plant power is best 🤙💪 19 Reply @tuvstar100 @tuvstar100 3 months ago Plant chompers is awesome!!! I'm on a Whole Food Plants Based Diet and in days of weight lifting I eat 600 gram of green peas and 200 gram of edamer beans within my diet plan. Through that pattern I easily consume 1,2 gram of protein per kg bodyweight in training days. In non training days my average protein intake is around 0,9-1,0 gram/kg bw. What I'd like to say with this telling is that Plant Based Diets WITHOUT SUPPLEMENTING PROTEIN ARE THE WAY TO GO!!! 16 Reply 34 replies @PooPooBanana2 @PooPooBanana2 3 months ago Fantastic 1 Reply @modernwoodelf691 @modernwoodelf691 3 months ago (edited) After watching this, in addition to the other thousand+ videos (yes, literally that many... it's what I've been doing for many years) from pro plant and pro animal flesh sourced protein videos... I can distill down that neither is significantly better for building muscle. It's way more about the actual strength training. So where does that leave us? Well, we end up getting our protein based on "personal preference", aka: taste, addiction, environmental concerns, compassion to animals, evolutionary beliefs, etc. But if you're looking for the objectively BEST all around way, with the least downside, it has to be a vegan diet. More fiber, diversity of vitamins and minerals, antioxidants/phytonutrients, less saturated fat/cholesterol, less cancer risks, significantly easier on digestion and organ health✌🧝‍♂🌱💪 9 Reply @larsbjerke8596 @larsbjerke8596 3 months ago Great job again Chris Reply @Bieggaoaivi @Bieggaoaivi 3 months ago I dont remember where i heard it but we dont really need that much protein because we are long distance runners or something like that, but rather more carbs, also eating lots of protein turns it into fat, so you gain wheight if you dont train like crazy. 2 Reply @MichaelToub @MichaelToub 3 months ago Great Video!! 3 Reply @geno5169 @geno5169 2 months ago Love how you showed us the evidence between plant or animal! We were watching Christopher Gardner's take on protein from the ZOE podcast and learned that to put on 10kg of muscle in a year, one would need to eat only 10g protein per day above their daily protein needs. Most soy protein powders are 20g, so maybe one should consider only a half-scoop if protein powder is that important. Thank you for trying to steer viewers to consider the risks of protein powders, as it seems that they are not essential, even for those trying to build muscle. Reply @drunkbunny94 @drunkbunny94 3 months ago Fantastic video, super indepth and easy to follow - despite a few non answers the message was clear xD There is so much research out there that is easy to mis read and people draw their own conclusions from research they dont understand that is often contrary to the conclusion stated in the paper itself. Like so much of WIL's videos can be "debunked" by reading his sources or by going to a more recent study or a study on humans since he LOVES to cherry pick data from like 100 years ago or use papers on other species like rats or cats when we are infact not rats or cats. This has created misinformation that people still believe and spread, like the "full protein sources" i see people commenting here, as long as you eat a varied diet and not you know 2k cals of rice you are getting all your amino acids, or people thinking soy has estrogenising effects because of the info wars guy saw "phyto-estrogen" (plant estrogen that blocks your bodys estrogen receptors reducing estrogen in men) and thought oh ofc that works the same as mamalian estrogen its going to make them girly which we see gets parroted by people gulping down cows milk or whey prodcuts that you know... are actually full of mamalian estrogen that causes estrogenising effects within the body. 1 Reply @geno5169 @geno5169 2 months ago I really enjoyed eating burgers I’m looking on trying the plant based ! Reply @songmlf @songmlf 3 months ago Nice video ❤ Reply @mertonhirsch4734 @mertonhirsch4734 3 months ago (edited) If you weight train, let's say you eat 2500 calories a day, you may very well be able to get near optimal results with say 125 grams of protein per day, maybe even less, but that's around 20% of your total calories. That can be done pretty easily of vegan diets. If, however, you need to lose weight and retain muscle, not only might you go down to as low as 1600 kcal a day, but you would also need to increase your protein intake to spare muscle, and that level of calorie deficit, you would need more like 160 grams of protein per day to prevent muscle loss. Now we're up to 40% calories from protein to maintain muscle during optimal fat loss, and you can't do that while whole vegan foods. Even the highest protein vegan foods are only going to be around 30% protein. Again, its not necessary at maintenance calories but in a calorie deficit to lose weight it is essential. I have tested for a positive food sensitivity with asthmatic symptoms from wheat, corn, oats, legumes and some nuts as well as casein. Soy isolate is not an option. IF there was a highly hydrolyzed vegan protein source I'd go for it, since highly hydrolyzed proteins don't provoke sensitivities since the proteins are broken down to smaller pieces that don't interact with the immune system. More people have grain and legume sensitivities than know it. Veggies and fruit=good. Hydrolyzed casein and hydrolyzed plant protein can be chemically virtually identical as long as you bump up the leucine content, and neither one is likely to cause sensitivities. Reply @terrymanahan9586 @terrymanahan9586 3 months ago This is an excellent presentation from an advocate of plant-based eating. I enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables and some animal protein. However, I have yet to read any serious discussion on why the advocates of meat-based eating do so well from their eating, even reversing ALL KINDS of illnesses & disorders, some even on exclusive (i.e., “carnivore” diets). According to the advocates of meat-based eating, including MANY medical doctors and Ph.Ds in various fields, they have seen reversals in type-2 diabetes, heart disease (!), digestive issues, skin issues, etc. How can this be? How can eating this way be “healthy”? Such results must be more than anecdotal. I learned how to eat real food instead and my muscle gain rate is the same. No bcaa, no whey, no glutamine, no preworkout, etc. Used that money into real food.
