A key regulator of the process of autophagy is:
a drop in cellular levels of acetyl CoA, an end product of nutrient metabolism.
As one would expect, fasting – the abstention from all nutrients –
is a potent inducer of autophagy.
This is especially true in mice, which begin to experience autophagy
within a few days of fasting. However, critical metabolic
differences between mice and humans make it difficult to extrapolate these findings to humans.
In this clip, Dr. Guido Kroemer describes:
the current state of knowledge about the minimum amount of time required for fasting-ind …

Unfortunately I came down with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer acouple of years ago that has spread throughout my bones. Hormonecdeprevation therapy and radiation only hurt me so I refused continued treatments. I'm Canadian so the doctors now suggest suicide.
F' that! I did a 21 day water fast in January and feel the best I've felt in two years. I'm following an intermittent fasting schedule and do a 4 day fast each month. I've beat their odds and I'm still alive!

Please keep in mind that fasting isn't just about weight loss. I did a 3-day fast that cleared up months of atopic dermatitis on my face. Nothing helped before that. I encourage you to try it, but keep it to yourself. Friends and family are skeptical, and worry needlessly.

Been eating OMAD for two months now. Am in ketosis constantly. Only drink salted water during fasting. All my health problems have gone. No more pain. Dropped 18 kilos so far and had my first training session at the gym today. Feeling like a new man. I am 51. Oh yeh I also quit smokes and alcohol was a heavy user of both.

I do 16:8 IF for 3 years now and I not only lost 65 pounds, but it fixed ALL of my health problems (hypertension, cholesterol, etc). I also do strength training for 60-90 min 3x per week. At 53, I am now in the best overall health and fitness of my entire life. My next step is to extend my daily fast to 18 hours and eventually incorporate a 48-72 hour fast once per month, for additional longevity benefits. I wish I'd learned sooner that fasting really is the key.

When you fast really keep it to yourself, because then people try shoving food down your throat coming up with myths about “you’re going to get sick” or “god made 3 meals you shouldn’t be ungrateful for having that privilege” blah blah blah.

I fast for 84 hours (3.5 days) once per month. The first day is easy, after that each day gets progressively less fun.
Fasting and the CDED diet keeps my Crohn's in complete remission without any medicine.
I've been doing it for over a year.

Finished a 72 hour fast Wednesday. (Second one I’ve ever done).
I always feel worse on the first day, which I think is more to do with cravings as opposed to actual hunger. Days 2 I woke up full of energy, went crazy clearing out the kitchen cupboards and went to bed that night with my body singing. Day 3 I was much more tired, and fantasising about my first meal later in the day, but it was manageable as I wasn’t having hunger pains.
I didn’t weigh before or after, I did it purely to eradicate the inflammation issues that had cropped back up since the first fast at the beginning of 2019. It worked, as I knew it would. My glands went down, knee, ankle, lower back pain all gone. I had also been suffering with acne on my neck, which all disappeared.

Autophagy is only one of the benefits of a prolonged fast. Fasting, whether prolonged or intermittent, has tremendous benefits for metabolic health in general and for reversing Type 2 Diabetes. It is truly a miraculous thing

This lady is scary smart. I can attest though to fasting and autophagy. Years ago I suffered a severe wound on my forehead from falling off of a house. When everything was healed and I was well, I still had a growth of scar tissue or some hard fibrous material just above my right eye and just under the skin. It was larger than a dime but smaller than a nickel. It was there for about 5 years. Then I started fasting. usually intermittent 16/8.But a 48 hour fast once a week. My growth thing just simply wasted away. There is a tiny remnant left, that is about the size of a pinhead, that I expect to completely disappear as I began fasting again.

At 76 I wanted to lose the final 5 lbs. to reach my goal of 175 lbs. Nothing was working. I went on a keto regimen and now have stabilized my weight at 165! I am never hungry. Have an eating window daily of 6-8 hours and a 24 hour fast is no problem. I feel great, play pickleball 3-4 hours 5 days a week. The physical energy and mental acuity I am experiencing has caused me to get annoyed at my peers physical and mental slowness. I thank God and ask for His help dealing with this newfound personality defect.

Started at age 60 fasting Mondays and Thursdays. Dry fast for 16 hours each. Had stents placed in my heart and was on a heavy medication. Given up all medicine and it's my tenth year without any problems. Moderate exercise and heart healthy diet is also part of my life.

i totally agree with the sentiment about if you are fasting to keep it from people close as they will pressure you to stop. i did a 21 day fast. im no one special, just an average guy. up to day 5 was hard but after that was super easy going. after i had loads of energy, my eyesight had improved. i had also successfully killed the carb crash rollercoaster of emotions that many get throughout the day. the world record for longest fast though is a scottish guy in the 1950s who fasted for 380+ days.

at 43, i have been doing IF with my 5 hour eating window from 3pm to 8pm. outside of this im only drinking water with lemon, salt and ACV. so far my belly is flattening out slighty. about an hour after eating my last possible meal ill fall asleep no problem. ill wake up real early almost too early but with that im totally awake feeling. its totally worth the try if your tired of feeling and looking like crap as i was. plus its the cheapest diet on the planet (please dont fact check). Think about it, you really dont have to eat so much AND eat all the time. you save money, food tastes better, you start getting attention i think there is some truth the idea that IF makes you smarter (dont judge, this is such a rough draft). peace!

I am 68, began 16/8 sprinkled with 20/4 and OMAD at age 62. Have completed 8 5-day fasts during the past 6 years. Many benefits perceived by doing this, including better overall health, weight loss and body transformation, I.e., prolonged fasting can lessen or even remove old fat in places ordinary diet and even exercise cannot reach. Rhonda has been an absolutely fantastic resource throughout my journey.
One thing I think we need to consider when comparing mouse to human models is the much shorter lifespan of mice. I’m sure it’s not a simple straight line comparison but it’s vital to understand and I appreciate the questions Rhonda poses to Guido along this line.

Don't forget that fat loss is also a form of Autophagy...self eating so to speak. If you are overweight and losing weight from fasting...then some autophagy has a occurred. If no weight loss has occurred, then no autophagy has happened, but it has to done over at least a week period as weight can easily go up and down depending on water and food in the body.

Currently, I am on Day-One of a planned 5-day water fast. Will find out tomorrow if I am a rodent. If I don't update this comment in a couple of days, you would all know that I was indeed a rodent. 🐀 Back soon. 😛
Weight on Day 0: 78KGs.
Day 1: Intense cravings between 22 and 24 hours after last meal. Managed to continue fast. Drank enough water to stay hydrated.
Day 2: Woke up in cold sweat, feeling weak, felt ok after a few minutes of breathing exercises. Feeling energised later during the day. 👍😁
Day 3: Woke up full of energy, feeling great today with very little cravings for anything. Exercised as usual and still energetic throughout the day. 👍
Day 4: Very little hunger pangs. Light exercise. No fatigue. Feeling good. 💪One more day to go!
Day 5: Had some trouble with acid reflux. Bit of searching on the net revealed that even if a person watches videos on food and eating, gastric juices are released in the stomach. So, while lying down, I experienced some unpleasant sensation with acidity. All good otherwise. Feeling great. 👍💪😁
Weight at finish of fast: 75Kgs.

Couple of months back i had started to cut carb to minimum + eliminate sugar on my diet, I initially doing 3 light meal a day and after 1 month 2 meal a day, i had also started to do exercise during that time while making sure my calorie intake is less than what i burn. I am now ready to do omad starting next week. My goal is to fast for at least 3 days once i got comfortable with omad. Btw i lose 12 kg since, and my back pain, knots and constant migraine 24/7 is now just memory, i had multiple doctors and medication for that. i also think i am sharper now specially during reasoning and my stress level had gone down significantly. People around me is seeing the effect but they dont believe me when i say that all they need to do is just not eat at all. 😅 but some of them are now cutting carb a bit, while some are joining me during exercise, Well i am.happy with my accomplishments so far and determined to reach my goal to fast for days soon!

Every second fasted is more autophagy and you always have autophagy going on. It will take 3-4 days to get into maximum autophagy however, which is much more dramatic than what most people experience day to day.

I've been doing intermittent fasting for at least six months(probably longer) where I typically don't eat for 16 hours or more (but not usually more than 20) and have noticed a lot of improvement with some of my issues. I don't know if 16 is the magic number but I will say fasting can help heal your body. The weird thing is longer dry fasting ( I did a few 1 and 2 days of it and 2 four days of it) didn't seem to do much for me. Everyone is different though and needs to experiment and find out what works best for them. For me, long termintermittent fasting has worked the best for me so far.

I've been doing 20/4 intermediate fasting since September 2022. Couple times was 24 hour fasting, like OMAD, now at the end of March 2023, went from 89kg 109cm weist to 69kg 81cm weist. It could be better, but I have some loose skin at lower abdominal part. But I've notised some improvment in last 7-10 days. If not loose skin, I could say, that I'm completely happy with the result, but even now I'm preetty much got what I wanted. Would try 2 day fasting in some time this spring.

I think it depends on many things besides just the time in the fasting state. You have to take in to consideration lots of variables such as activity levels (exercise or stagnant), what was consumed prior to beginning the fast (carb heavy or not), environment itself (temperature in particular, causing more or less metabolism to cool or heat the body), stress (heavy stress vs relaxed state)... etc.
With that being said, there will never be an exact answer that works for all, since no one can ever share the exact same circumstances. I personally feel that by 48 hours of a fast, my body has begun autophagy. How far along, I couldn’t say. But I also work out very hard, lots of cardio, hot saunas, cold showers, black coffee, and sometimes green tea while fasting, so I know I enter autophagy much quicker that way.

Surely there is a significant difference if you exercise in the fasted state. I do IF 8 16, but most mornings I run for an hour or so. I have noticed that on long runs at a certain point I can feel my body starting to use fat when glucose has run out. I also notice I feel quite different in other ways. I know if I just sit around I have to fast much longer to get those feelings.

I've experimented with various 'rhythms' of calorie intake over the last few years, also thinking about the type of food I'm taking, also keeping in mind simply ways of getting used to the process (I hit on the idea of using nuts for high calories to get used to small meals, for instance) and it's ended up with me being on OMAD pretty much all the time for about 4 years, a period of one meal every 2 days, gradually getting used to fasting and going from just a couple of days a few times, then 3, then up to 4 or 5 a few times, then 6 a couple of times, then 10 twice, 11 once, then 14 twice, with a month or two at least between each. The key seemed to be getting used to it psychologically, also understanding it (knowing I was feeding myself all the same; also being very aware that getting into the full autophagy and fat burning would be set back to zero if I consumed any food), making sure I was getting the necessary electrolytes for cell function, i.e. sodium, magnesium and potassium, consuming it all the time with water, and just leading normal days that take my mind off of food, that I enjoy, but relaxing. I did it in the summer mainly, and also during holidays, and also while living alone, so that made it much easier. The worst thing is temptation. It's amazing how easy it can get when your body adjusts to it, but the psychological aspect is a big one. I actually would walk past the grocery store nearby all the time and not feel tempted to go in, and even went around the supermarket buying cleaning stuff, but also checking out what best to buy later to finish my fast later, and still not tempted. Results are enlightening. Once fully into it, over the hurdle of the first stages (worst generally is the fourth, I found), better mood, more energy, sharper thinking, better sleep, incredible weight loss (about 4kg per week once properly into it). I lost more than 15kg with this approach. Though, it's true, it made me more relaxed about eating between fasts, so I could have kept more weight off (slow creep sometimes, especially over Christmas). It's true also that doing it with others around, and doing it while working makes it a lot harder. I did it during breaks, long weekends, holidays, and generally alone, keeping the apartment clear of food, of course. I also should add that this developed out of a combination of health problems I was having, plus weight gain, so developed over time and experimentation, so doing it suddenly is maybe not doable. Also I had experimented a lot with low carbs and ketogenic diets, so had gotten used to being in ketosis too, so that maybe made fasting easier for me as well. Also, the fact that I had these reasons and did this experimentation, taking it quite far, is kind of out of some level of desperation, and I can't be sure that the more extreme things I did, the fasts of 10 days and more, etc., do not have some harmful effect, at least in the long term. Short term benefits, weight loss, fine, but I'm still not sure that there might not turn out to be good reason to not take it as far as I did, so 'beware', I'm no expert. Learn about it. Stuff on the channel 'what i've learned' helped a lot in understanding the processes. I think there's more for me to learn, for example what better to eat in the days before it, and how best to come out of it.

I have been running mostly on ketones for the last eight days dropped 6 pounds and my heart rate is way down to the upper 60s at times when I had to fight sometimes to get it below 100 with medication. just checked it's 69. Im taking 1/2 the Metoprolol needed. Doctors dont even know this. I eat one time a day, a little on the light side and mostly protein as to not trigger insulin. I have at least a minimum of 30 more pounds to go so I'm nowhere near overdoing this. I eat dry lettuce as a snack food when bored as it has next to no calories and water sometimes lemon juice in it. for bad breath. I feel good but I feel tired still as I always felt tired but this is better tired. i take a b complex and magnesium and extra salt and Vit C. Edit I have now completed 50 days of eating one meal a day, I have lost 27 pounds max. I feel tired my sleep is poor but my atrial fibrillation is still gone heart rate is so great and I no longer feel like I'm dying 20 more pounds to go. I'm looking more youthful in the face, I'm 65 years old. i had sagging jowls. they are rapidly going away I'm spending more of each day sitting and walking rather than lying down. I always ate what i thought was healthy until i realized carbohydrate is sugar and starch and they are the same thing according to science both are sugar. so eating 900 pounds of starch a year will kill you just as fast. it was my wife's birthday and I took her out and ate normal carbs and got a big nauseating stomach ache. i dont do well eating any corn product and it's in everything. The big bottle of Metformin has gone untouched, on this desk i think I keep it as a reminder.

Try a 3 day water fast and at the 71 hour run a 10K. It was like a normal run. And I think the benefits have improved since that, cause now I can hit the 48HR FASTING without hunger o difficulties. Give it a try. i HAS DONE GOOD THINGS TO MY HEALTH

I fast for 21 hrs daily with a eating window of 3 hours and usually between the hours of around 9pm - 12am. Not sure if that’s a good thing, but it seems to help maintain longer deeper sleeps! Maybe I’m a rodent! 😂
The only thing I consume during the fasting window is Lemon Water and Plant Based Teas, some carrot juice.. And.. During the 3 hours refeeding window, I consume Coconut Water, 3 Exotic Fruits, Nuts and Oily Fish, Prebiotic Fermented Foods such as Kimchi, Sauerkraut and Organic Biotic Yoghurt and occasionally a little Rice or Potatoes!
Prolonged fasting I’ve achieved 3 days easily and have done it a few times now, however I am now looking to extend from 3 to 5 days in a row soon!
This has been my way of life for a while now, and really changed my life forever, by reducing inflammation, weight loss from 75kg to 60kg and my vascularity returned which I hadn’t seen in ages!

I think intermittent fasting does to your body what high amounts of exercise does, and works so well because we're so sedentary. When I intermittently fast as an office worker who works out once a day, I start to feel like I did as a cross country runner in high school (two workouts a day, plus PE, and a ton of food small meals that fly in the face of intermittent fasting, OMAD programs). I think we all need more exercise and accompanying good sleep and nutritious food, and when we can't get it, less calories and less time processing calories.

Has there been any recent studies since this clip with more evidence of autophagy? I try to do approx 16 hrs fasting. I can lift more weights in the gym so I suspect my testosterone level is higher. I'm in my mid 50's and I see no drop off at all in my strength. I would say my libido is also higher. Which I could do without if I'm perfectly honest :-)

I am 71 years old female. I just came off 91 hours fast today. This is my 6th Fast this year. Usually I break it off at 85 and 87 hours but this time I broke it off at 91 hours. My plans were to stop at 72 hours,. but since I were feeling good I did not want to stop. Fasting is my health benefit program. I did have problems with joint pains lower extremities 2 years ago. But not anymore since I been Fasting the last 2 years . I also uses it to lose wt, but I only lost 5-6 pounds this time . The last 2 days I had the same wt. So I decided to break the fast . I'm a carb sugar eater but my fast has been really helping me. Whenever I notice I have start eating that stuff heavy again I would jump on the Fast to reset. Thank Goodness for this Fasting Thing! PS the 2nd day i'm hungry a lot. I try to drink lots of water. I never experience the headaches, but I do be tired so I can rest. I only did H-salt once , it made me nauseous, I did gatoraide zero once, I didnt like the taste. So I just trys to get through it the best I can to get my benefits. Fasting is my Friend. lmbo

Fasting does gets easier . In the past, I’d binge after a attempted fast , on evening #1 lol. I’m better now :) .Go up bit by bit , like 14 hrs., 24 hrs. , 36 hrs, 48 hr, 72 hrs..... I’m currently doing rolling 48’s , filled by 1 day of keto IF, then another 48 hr water fast ... I’ll be throwing in 3-7 day fasts here and there. I have the body weight to handle this though. There are still great options for smaller people.

Besides the hours fasted, would the amount of food and calories intake a make difference in getting toward autophagy? I would think a person with 1200 calories instead of 2000 calories intake before fasting for 20 hours would have better results? And the amount of energy expended during the day.

My assumption is, as the body becomes adapted to fasting, fat burning and autophagy it will take longer to reach optimal autophagy.. I make this assumption because it keeps getting easier for me to fast over time.

My (repeated) experience of water fasting is, past the initial stronger loss due to water loss, a loss of 2lbs/day. That's 1.25% of my body mass per day, making the 4-day loss about 5%. I don't know where the number of 2% comes from, it should be revised.

I just finished my second 3-day prolonged fast ever last week. It was much easier than my first time.
It was probably because I spent 6 weeks getting my body used to fasting from OMAD fasting to alternate day OMAD fasting. I plan to try to push for a 4-day fast by the end of next month to have first hand experience on what autophagy is like.

Deffo feeling benefits at the 48 hour mark where l believe autophagy really ramps up as well as AGH production which presumably helps the immunity to re-set.My issue is with finding a balance between Ketosis and Autophagy and if or where one cancels the other.I'm good with my weight 10.5 stone at 5ft 9ins and am trying to address a trapezoid inflammatory problem with a meatless (omad) regime long adapted to.I didn't set out to go the Ketosis route but find myself in that state judging by the infamous 'keto-flu' i find myself in,so guess i'm in 'dirt-keto' territory lol.
I find it bemusing hearing dr Bergs regular recommended 'grass-fed' meat and eggs protocols but not having the coin for this l just quit the antibiotics ridden corporate farmed stuff and stick with fish which i imagine doesn't by definition get the same 'infusion' treatment as red-meat ?,but generally i'm finding a fry pan of chopped red onion, ton of mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, spinach, garlic and 2 fried eggs ,served on a sesame bagel, sees me good for over 24 hours regularly.
I wish there was a definitive, nuanced guide to measure the intersections of a diet like mine more geared to Autophagy and AGH rather than strictly Ketosis but hard to judge if i'm on a self cancelling regime by snacking on a cheese and pickle bagel for example between the OMAD.Don't want to kill myself to live, maybe 2 x 72's a year for an immune reset ? very hard to gauge...conflicting information being what it is ?

Autophagy is dependent on how much food you consumed along with what the macros were whether heavy on protein, carbohydrates and fats during the previous meal plus your level of activity and your individual metabolism. Eat OMAD (one meal a day) and you can pretty much assure you're going trigger autophagy sometime after your meal.

I've been intermediate fasting couple times a week, 16-18 hours, though I cheat a bit as I drink black coffee in the mornings, not sure if this throws everything off but I've felt amazing. I realized I wasn't eating for 12 hour periods anyway and always though this was unhealthy, so I figured what was a couple more hours, now that I've done it for a couple months I think I can go 24-48 hours.

Autophagy is about energy deficit. Run a marathon on an empty stomach and you can expect at least some autophagy for sure. Spent 3 days in bed fasting and there may be none at all. The problem of course is that we have no means of quantifying it in either case.

Folks looking to fast for a prolonged duration (2+ days) for the 1st time, just know that the 1st 24 hours are the worst. You are fighting your body's subconscious habbit of stuffing ur mouth every chance it gets. You will not realise how STRONG that urge is until you experience it yourself. But keep drinking water. Water weighs ur stomach and temporarily releaves your urge to eat. You wont die, trust me, your body is just a spoilt lil' brat. Keep going past the 24hr mark, it gets easier from there.
Next time would be easier bcz know you know you can do it. Might even encourage some to try a bit longer 36-48hr
Only advice, have water ALWAYS around you.
Start small. You got this.😊

Normally could do a 4 day fast no problem, but picked up scary symptoms recently after 2 days - short of breath, pale, sweating excessively, dizzy, waves of nausea and tingling down to my hands, with any form of exertion, including a short walk, had to lie down to prevent passing out. Will try again to see if it was just a once off.

great video and also great comments. Rhonda Patrick is the rare person who wants to live in a fact-based world in the best way that we currently know. Others would rather get clicks and don't care about the truth. I just finished a 52 hour water fast. feels great. A small amount of salt water helped me avoid headaches during the fast. I recommend to plan your fast so you break it with a few days off work. Just in case there is a bit of inconsistent bowel activity for the first day after breaking it.

i already finished like hundred 36 hours fasting sessions, first sessions were hard, i couldn't last more then 24 hours without food, now it's just easy. Now i feel like it's actually sick to not be able to not eat food for like 36-48 hours and function properly. Human organism shouldn't function that way.

I'm doing OMAD pretty much every day. Some days are harder than others. Late at night in bed is the worst time for me. I put off eating until around 7:00 or 8:00PM and eat for an hour or two (feeding time). I haven't lost much weight because I've only been at it for 2-years or so but I'm keeping the faith. I do OMAD for weight loss, yes but I do it mostly to reverse insulin resistance. I've been showing better results lately as I have taken off about 5 pounds since November (it's January now).

I just finished a 5 day water fast, and I lost 15 pounds, which is around 10% of my body weight. So how do explain this, as opposed to your 1-2%? Granted, I am a long-time fasting practitioner, so maybe this is a factor.

Ok, so the standard 72 hours of water fasting to reach autophagy. Sounds good, i'll stick to my 4x yearly 7 day water fast. I'm trying to improve my insulin resistance and sensitivity, the weight loss is a bonus but not why i do it. Once i reach my goal weight and my insulin resistance and sensitivity improve to the point i'm happy with it, i'll most likely switch to doing a 7 day fast twice a year.

I’ve read three studies that were done on humans but they’re not conclusive one said 14 hours once at 18 hours and the other one said 12 to 18 hours. But those tests were not very controlled or clinical, they were more asking questions of the test subjects and I don’t know how they determined if autopagy was starting or not.
I find myself when I do the eight hour with 16 hours fasting tend to lose weight a little faster but again that’s not really scientific but from everything I’ve studied I would guess 14 to 18 hours is probably when it starts but I also think it’s probably buried it may start as early as eight hours and 20 hours is probably going to kick it in a lot more than 15 hours, but I don’t see anything very scientific done on human subjects and like this doctor said mice and rats are not humans, they’re designed to eat different food and they’re also incredibly small compared to humans and metabolism and small animals are usually much higher or faster and it’s kind of like comparing apples and oranges. When people ask me I tell them to do what they can do, if they’re comfortable with 18 or 20 hours a day then go for it. A lot of people are fine eating one meal a day or two meals a day. I personally find it if I’m eating the right vegetables with the right fats I don’t get that hungry and doing 16 or 18 hours isn’t that big of a deal, before I was eating the fat with the right foods I was always hungry, I could eat a pizza and still be hungry even though I was stuffed. I think eating right is the Chi more so than worrying about the numbers. I think people should just try to do what they can do, daily I would say 18 hours would be awesome if they’re going to do daily intermittent fasting if they’re going to do it once a week they should probably try to go longer like 2448 hrs., but people really need to stay hydrated and make sure they’re still getting enough potassium and magnesium and sodium so they’re not dehydrating themselves. I drink lemon water and lots of it and I make sure I had plenty of salt before I started to fast, I think taking a magnesium and potassium supplement while fasting is a very good idea, you can also have coffee and adding butterWhile you’re fasting kind of curbs the hunger but doesn’t mess with the autophagy, Some people say you can even have bone broth though to me that seems like your body would see that his food but again I really don’t know we’re having any scientific data on that so I don’t know if bone broth would be OK or not.

I would guess at no, or very little, otherwise, we'd all be a lot healthier, because who hasn't fairly regularly, at least once a month, been in a situation where we haven't eaten for a while.
I would guess, like anything good, or beneficial there is some hard work and discipline involved.
that would tend to indicate more than one day at least.
Not a very scientific reason, but...

I have a habit of sucking mucus out the back of my sinuses (due to post nastal drip?) which i think might be stopping autophagy during a fast. That mucus is protein which has calories, and if you are a mucus back slurper like me, and swallow the mucus, this could be sabotaging your fast. What do you think?

Keto strips usually light up at the 72 hours mark when my system is not all effed up because of glucose fructose. I bet you could maybe get in real ketosis at the 24h mark if you have a clean healthy and constant diet (which is not my case). My 1st recommendation for anybody would be to completely eliminate sugar and maybe carbs from your diet. You'll soon realize how your brain is all twisted up and addicted to sugar (notice that food cravings almost always are about fatty food, junk or sweet things...that's your brain being addicted). Eliminating sugar makes water fasting easier in my experience. +, you are less likely to cheat after your fast.

I think it needs to be reminded that in any individual case, the statistical probabilities may not apply. Unless some scientist has actually used you as his research subject, he’s not going to have evidence of what is going on in your particular body at any given time. This is true of all studies, and even if they studied you it still doesn’t mean they know everything

If a 48 hour fast in mice results in a 20% weight loss that puts mice near death, how is that in any way relevant to humans, let alone equating it to a four day human fast that results in a 2% weight loss? Those data scream that no conclusion whatsoever can be drawn as to how long it takes to get robust autophagy in humans even though both humans and mice are mammals. It's like saying ice cream starts melting at 33 degrees so powdered milk will start melting at [x multiple of 33 degrees] because both ice cream and powdered milk are dairy products. The one data point tells you nothing about where the other data point lies.

Must be my body getting used to fasting, also prep before the fast helps. I have a question for anyone. On my 5th day I started getting a general pain in my back, like in the mid section, not any specific location. does anyone know what this could be? Thanks in advance.

After fasting a few days, I started seeing lots of children in my dreams, and suspect it’s a way of knowing you are in autophagy - the children are baby cells. I was also having dreams where people were looking through trash to find things - they might be symbols of my body’s microbes reusing old bits and pieces to make new cells (a feature of autophagy).

LOL, autophagy is not binary "on" or "off". There is something like a concept of a "autophagial flux" which can be measured. So this is clearly a continuum - on a one hand old diabetic patient with an insane level of insulin (which inhibits autophgay), and on the other hand a human after weeks of fasting.
So even a short fast, like 12-14 hours a day may actually matter (especially as authopagy gets constantly less intese with age)...

It seems like a good idea to eat 20/4, or OMAD; I do 16/8 or 18/6. I think doing more may be more destructive than it helps. IMO. Humans should eat at least once a day. If for nothing else, so our body clocks stay even.

I did it to get rid of stomach pain I think I got from listeria (ate 12-15 bags of salad kits 3 weeks prior that were recalled that I didn't know about) but I still have that abdominal pain. Had normal energy before and after. I lost 5 pounds and saw it for sure. I made up a container of pink Himalayan salt, no-salt, and Epsom salt (snake juice recipe) a year ago and still had some so I used it. Can that stuff expire or go bad? Just wondering why I had no energy.

Amazing that humans can just continue life while fasting, apparently unlike rats. I've done fasts of various types (3 day, 5 day, seven day water fasts, alternate day, a fasting-mimicking diet following Dr. Long's guidelines, and these days eating between 9 and 11 am most days) for decades and i'd just continue my running and exercise schedule with no apparent problem. I even fasted on a marathon day and noticed no apparent difference. But i was only in my 60's when i did the marathon fast. Now i'm 81and don't do the water or fasting mimicking fast because my wife worries about my weight, so i keep a few extra pounds on to make her happy. I also do a Ferris Bueller Day Off once a week. On normal days i eat lots of meat, dairy, some veggies and fruit, a potful of supplements, and minimum of 50 gm fiber. My doctor says i'm an exceptionally healthy guy, but my older brothers seem to be too, so i'm sure a good part of it is having great genes.

After I got out of the hospital from heart complications, I was asked if I needed anything from the store. I said yes, and asked for cucumbers. Next time I asked for broccoli. I wasn't asked what I wanted anymore. My grandma just started buying Donuts, pastries, cookies, ice cream, and deli sandwiches with the thickest whitebread bun I've ever seen.
I honestly didn't think she was this ignorant. I still don't believe it actually. I'm more inclined to think she just doesn't want me to be healthy. What is love? Lol

After 10 days on a water only fast I started to get pain in my hips, lower back and sciatic. During the day it was no problem but this pain would seem to intensify at night when I laid down and I was unable to sleep at all the last two nights. I have stopped the fast until I can understand this more. Does anyone else with extensive experience know what causes this and possible remedies? I was doing great other than this. After a post fast broth and fresh vegetable juice regimen I fully recovered in 3 days.

The answer is very simple. It depends on the organism. For one who fasts regularly and follows a healthy diet it's probably less than someone who never fasted and their body is not even capable of producing ketones relatively fast.
BTW, women, be careful of your intermittent fasting and water/dry fasting patterns because you do not want to burn too much fat every day. You are made to carry more fat than men and this is how you stay healthy! What Rhonda does (10-14) is the best, but don't do it forever. 8-16 for women it is proven (in practice) to be extreme. And mind to take all your calories cause on a 8-16 or 10-14 diet with calories deficit is kind of dangerous when done for long periods.

I can never find the answers to the obvious questions about intermittent fasting:
What actually breaks the fast? How many calories? Of what type?
Do we have measurable indicators of being in a fasting state, and getting out of it?

I was actually very happy when I heard Dr. Longo speak about the benefits of a 12/12 hours fast as opposed to longer fasting periods that also have specific health benefits, but also have increasingly more negative side effects (the longer you fast). He also mentions studies that show, that people who skip breakfast (which is very common for those who fast for extended time periods) have a shorter life expectancy than those who don't skip breakfast 🤷♀️ Do whatever feels right for you... but I'm done with longer periods of fasting. I gained absolutely no positive effects off of them.

Studies have shown that autophagy may take two to four days of fasting in humans. It is believed that autophagy does not begin until the glucose and insulin levels drop considerably. Some experts suggest starting with 32 to 48 hours; 72-hour fast autophagy pushes the limits for most humans but can be possible.
Depending on the individual's metabolism, significant autophagy may take two to four days of fasting in humans.
How do I know I'm in autophagy?
Increased ketone levels. Ketone bodies are molecules produced from fatty acids when your body doesn't have enough carbs to use for energy ( 7Trusted Source Trusted Source ). ...
Reduced appetite. A key sign of autophagy is reduced appetite. ...
Fatigue. ...
Bad breath. ...
Weight loss. ...
Improved brain function.

Give me a break. It's easy to find out. Simply get keto strips from Walmart or Target for under $8. Generally, after 18 hours fasting you will see some results, either trace or small ketosis. After two or three days you are in full ketosis. You don't need some clinician or doctor or some scientist to tell you what you can measure yourself with keto strips when urinate! Geez Louise, it's that simple.! Test it yourself. become curious. Be your own citizen scientist! It really is that simple.

Eating 5-10 times a day is detrimental to health anyway. "Fasting" is just an word for not eating. There is a lot of noise around autophagy, which could exist or not. Nevertheless, most scientists and practitioners consider that eating 2-3 times a day and reducing the intake of carbs are healthy choices, no matter what diet or lifestyle. It does not have to be extreme, is good enough to be moderate. Except medical cases, of course.

in other words, you're not going to see significant results from autophagy. It can "help: but it's extremely minimal and the results don't warrant the practice. Because most people aren't going to go without food for 3+ days just to see a 1~2% reduction in body weight/cell waste.

Sadly I am starting to think a person pretty much has to starve themselves to near death in order to see any benefits. What he says about the percentile reductions in humans being about 1% after a prolonged fasting period just doesn't inspire confidence. I do 16:8 regularly and a 24hour fast once a month. I'm starting to think that it's not as beneficial as I'd hoped.

So a person weighing 150lbs would have to lose 30lbs during fasting to show the equivalence to rodents. At an average loss of 2lbs per week it would take around 8 weeks to see the autophagy humans expect. Thats far more in line with respect to metabolism in rats/humans. Hence even 3 or 4 days is no where near the tome needed to have the effect we would want. Until we have real human studies. Its all guesswork.

But Humans lose 2% of body weight in 4 to 5 days, where mice loses 20% at just 48 hours, therefore, actually, mices have a humongous faster metabolic rate than humans.

I'm on day 4 of a 5 day fast, and I keep being told that after day 2 it gets easier and I should have more energy, but so far this has been the hardest day for me. The hunger pangs are stronger than ever, no energy whatsoever. Can barely keep my eyes open. Been taking electrolytes and apple cider vinegar mixed with water. I don't understand everyone saying how much energy they have. This whole experience has just gotten worse each day and I feel like a zombie. No fasting energy. No mental clarity. Only discomfort, extreme hunger and misery so far lol.
And my hemorrhoids are as present as ever, which is why I started this fast in the first place. Am I the odd one out, or is everyone else just crazy? What is supposed to feel good about this? Honestly it's just making me depressed.

Honestly 16:8 is like for rookies ... I don't evn feel it. Omad is great (most folks won't need anyothr workout besides walking 8k+ steps a day) .
If u are vegan/vegetarian Omad will be more challenging. Remember, only meat eaters (high protein high fat) can fast dat long on routine basis. Vegetarians shud prefer 16:8 or 18:6 and work out when fasted (also keep, second meal at night relatively low carb).
Anybody can try long fasting every now n then.
Modi (ind pm) eats less, sleeps 4 hrs tops and fasts during certain religious ocassions (for 7 days 9days etc, only lemon water).

So you have kept your podcast and taking no risks in the face of the pandemic. Good for you, you have an income. I wonder if that nagging question in the back of your mind, that ability of yours to delve deeply into scientific data, has prompted you to look at the information that has continued to come out in the last two years about Covid. Does it keep you up at night that you’re actions might actually reflect cowardice in the choice of safety and following the narrative over actually educating people about what their health and fitness is?

If you just Sitting all day in the office and don’t workout it’s a different story and maybe much easier.
But if you workout a lot you should at least eat after that because your body need those minerals, mikro and macro for regeneration.

AAhhh those scientist!!! Instead of using mice why they don't use humans? I have fasted for 20-48-72 hours -five days and 12 days. Nothing happens in the body before 72 hours, after that your toxins, autophagy start to clear and you lose weight and you can see your skin, gums, hair, eyes, etc start to change. I lost 13 ponds, (I'm 60 yo)and everything was wonderful!!! Highly recommended! So for this doctor to say they can't know about results in humans let me tell you I'm not the only one doing this, here in youtube he and everybody else can find human fellows doing this, they are just lazy and then they don't recognize anything that is not "supported" by their well founded labs (usually by universities and pharmaceuticals behind them)

You just have to avoid protein for autophagy. It has nothing to do with fasting. It has to do with protein fasting. Of course ketones are required. So you cannot gorge on carbs. Just follow Omad at min and avoid proteins on weekends or more.

DOES AUTOPHAGY ACTIVATES IF YOU'RE FAT? Does Autophagy happen even if you have thousand and thousand of stored calories?
1 kg of fat is 7700 calories. An average male has 12.6 kg of fat reserves. That equals to approx 117,000 stored calories for the cells.
I mean cells won't eat fellow cells if there's abundant reserves in the body. That's a 70 day supply of fuel for the cells.
Does autophagy only turns on after you have depleted your fuel stores (in this case 70 days)?

So 48 hours of mouse fasting = 20% reduction in body weight
This equals to

they dont know, you only eat your body in starvation and that means you have bodyweight loss 40 pounds sound about right 20 percent. if you begin to see skin tags and moles shrinking I think that is proof your body is going after cells everywhere it no longer needs. i actually think the research will show the longest-lived humans those that live over 100 years will recall many 20 percent swings in weight where the good life was interrupted with times of famine. that means adding years to your life via autophagy was most likely accidental and not something you can do with will power

I am sorry I watched this. I will not watch anymore, but I have found much success in fasting. Fasting while you're sleeping is not fasting. Weight loss mode is one thing and maintaining is another. OMAD is mainly to maintain not lose. But, get off the carbs(not 100 percent) above all else you are what you eat! I have constant success with 48hr fasting only water with lime juice not lemon anymore because their is something with lime that lemon dont have.

The body uses autophagy when on a calorie deficit. You get all the benefits of autophagy this way without the need to fast. It depends on your goals. Some cancers also spread quicker with autophagy.
So, speak with an expert and don't get your nutrition advice from people with an agenda. Like this channel.

How silly ...🤣
People invested billions of dollars for many years to find that fasting is the best and only way to clean your whole body from cellular levels, and they found that humans food is not Meat, vegetarian food only suitable for human body that nature gives.
They saying that "we found a new thing"😂😂.
Fact is they didn't found them,
They actually exists in nature
We actually went far from nature by eating wrong food like meat and others.
But in India Lakhs of years ago in Vedas writtend like
"Lankhanam Parama Aushadham".
Lankhnam=fasting
Parama=Supreme
Aushadham=Medicine.
and still people follow this in the name of god or with spiritual practices.
So Even Tons of Tones of Noble Prizes also not compete to Vedas knowledge.
Jai Hind Jai Bharat 🙏🙏
"World is one Family" says in Vedas.

Does coffee induce autophagy? | Guido Kroemer

Coffee consumption is associated with protection from several chronic diseases, including
cancer,
cardiovascular disease, and
neurodegenerative disease.
Some of the beneficial effects of coffee may
stem from its ability to induce autophagy.
In a study in which fasting mice were provided either caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee in drinking water,
autophagy was observed
in the liver,
muscle, and
heart
just four hours after consumption.
In this clip,
Dr. Guido Kroemer discusses the autophagy-
inducing qualities of coffee.

Neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease are characterized by protein aggregation and mitochondrial dysfunction, due in part to mitophagy failure. An emerging strategy in the prevention and (possibly) treatment of neurodegenerative diseases is starving cells as a means to induce general autophagy to help rid the cell of protein aggregates. In this clip, Dr. Guido Kroemer describes how mitophagy contributes to the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disease and how autophagy might mitigate these processes.
