The lives of Carolyn Ryan (Meryl Streep), a small-town doctor, and her artist husband, Ben (Liam Neeson), are shaken up when their son, Jacob (Edward Furlong), becomes the prime suspect in the death of a local teen girl. While Carolyn is intent on learning the truth about her son's involvement, Ben is willing to protect him at any cost, regardless of his guilt or innocence. When Jacob finally tells his parents what happened, events take a surprising series of turns. 376 Comments rongmaw lin Add a comment... james newman james newman 3 weeks ago What a treat seeing Meryl Streep and Liam Neeson teamed up as a couple, both were great performances and they had wonderful chemistry making their relationship believable and often times touching. The kids who played Jacob and Judith also gave terrific performances, but I was never totally convinced that Ben and Jacob were biologically related when the Jacob, who was old enough to drive, was nearly a foot shorter than Ben (Liam Neeson's character). Another standout performance was Alfred Molina, as the cagey attorney Panos Demeris who would do practically anything to win a case. As a result, he ended up enabling Ben and Jacob's deceptive behavior. As much as I like this movie, I do have one big problem with the plot in the last twenty minutes of the film. I don't think I've ever met a mother who would opt for telling the truth to a grand jury, if she knew it would send her son and her husband to prison. 28 Pian Lim Pian Lim 3 weeks ago Absolutely five-star film. The story is lifelike and the characters are warm and believable, the outrage and condemnation also . It hit me like a brick . Meryl no in fact all of them were great . The sentence was a bit harsh but a life was lost and the gravity of this must be defended by the law . I sure would move out immediately! People are unforgivable and you as a family must have a chance to start over with a blank sheet ! A full story with such a depth and unforgettable performances by Liam Neeson, maryl streep, and of course the lawyer. Standing for the family is the key theme of the movie and it's the soul. Hard on the human pysche and a juvenile, expected to be perfect by not being culpable in any way - no time to process and wrestle with his conscience, to make a choice at the outset to cheat the law by manipulating the legal system, while all the time losing his soul. He lost his freedom for a while, but he and his family would experience restoration and healing, in the course of time. The law does not excuse and ignorance is no excuse. But cut to the chase, "there is nothing that is hidden that will not be revealed" (Bible).
