Let’s talk about the most important nutrient to support a healthy prostate.
An enlarged prostate can affect urination and libido. The more the prostate enlarges, the higher your risk is for prostate cancer. But, just because the prostate enlarges doesn’t mean you have cancer.
There is a powerful form of testosterone in the body called DHT. Testosterone can convert to DHT with a specific enzyme. Certain medications inhibit this enzyme to reduce DHT and help with male pattern baldness, prostate hypertrophy, and erectile dysfunction. But, zinc is actually a natural inhibitor of this enzyme.
Zinc is the most important nutrient to support a high testosterone level, sperm fertility, and a healthy prostate.
A zinc deficiency could lead to an enlarged prostate gland, inflammation of the prostate gland, and an increased risk of prostate cancer. A zinc deficiency can also affect your libido, testosterone, sperm count, and urine flow.
Causes of a zinc deficiency:
• Not consuming enough red meat
• Low stomach acid
• Certain medications (antacids, diuretics, statins)
• Alcohol
• Sugar consumption
• Frequent meals
Foods high in zinc:
1. Shellfish
2. Red meat
You could also take a zinc supplement. I have a great product called Trace Minerals Enhanced, that’s loaded with zinc and the other trace minerals you need.
However, zinc alone will not act as a cure for an enlarged prostate or other medical conditions because there are many other factors involved. One of these factors is your diet. To learn more about the diet you should be on, check out my videos on Healthy Keto and intermittent fasting.

Dr. Eric Berg, I agree that zinc plays vital role in prostate health. What if it gets enlarged due to stopping of urine for long hours in young men ?? Because it is also a factor of prostate enlargement. Does zinc plays the same role here ? Thank you. 😊

A question about causation here: how do we know that low levels of zinc in the prostate are caused by zinc deficiency in a diet vs. being caused by an underlying pathology that decreases the prostate's ability to retain zinc? Maybe whatever causes prostate enlargement also decreases the ability of the prostate to retain zinc?

No guarantee as dr berg has said but my psa was 63, I think if I had followed these guidelines, I really believe it could have made a dramatic difference! Thanks dr berg for the research

The fact that prostate enlargement is directly related to zinc deficiency proves that zinc is such a key element! I've been taking zinc for years therefore I see the benefits.
In addition which the video consists precious information for about zinc and its role especially over prostate gland health. Cheers.

Been taking zinc supplements for years, for immune systems. Discovered and started taking stinging nettle supplements. Wow, nettle really helps with prostrate health, size, urine flow the whole bit. Surprised you didn't include Stinging Nettle in this video, you have talked about it before. Also agree taking a copper supplement with zinc for balance in the brain and nervous system.

Fellow Holistic Health Practitioner here. 👋🏼 I love all your videos, and wanted to share additional insight on this subject matter. While Zinc is the mineral oriented component in better regulation of DHT (and thus optimal prostate health and even hair loss prevention), there is also a notable mention to essential fatty acids.
Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) and Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) are superb in DHT regulation, so essentially, anyone who is not getting enough essential fatty acids in their diet (or supplementation), is going to experience overproduction of DHT, especially when aging becomes a factor. There are a few studies relating to regular consumption of avocado (for example) being a powerhouse DHT regulating food, for exactly this reason (the essential fatty acid connection to DHT regulation). In herbal medicine, the “tried and true” Saw Palmetto herbal supplement, has always been synonymous with both DHT regulation and prostate health. Would be nice for you to do a follow up video, of all the different things that are phenomenal for comprehensive prostate health (Zinc, essential fatty acids, herbal botanicals, etc.) as I believe men today underestimate how important maintaining the hormonal system is, that directly affects their prostate. No man wants prostate problems into their 60’s+, but they don’t even consider it important until it’s too late. Thank you again for the stellar video as always. 😊🙏🏼

Hi Dr Berg.
I'm sure that phytosterols natural cholesterol blocker can help with enlarged prostrate but it can have side effects !
Its took phytosterols for a while and yes they did help my prostrate but eventually I ended up with bad joint pain as if I had lost the lubricant between them, my brother in law got joint pain taking statins too I presume it was a similar thing..

Interesting video. Although Dr Berg indicates what can reduce the bodies ability to absorb zinc he misses out the main element - how do you detect what levels of zinc you have in your body?. Are zinc levels in blood / plasma indicative of levels of zinc in the prostate? This knowledge is essential since too much zinc can also cause issues with zinc / copper imbalance.
Definitely need a part 2 to this video to give much more valuable information.

With Zincs role (as well as vit D etc) in covid prevention, it seems good to stay on top of your zinc. I've heard that you want to make sure you don't overdue zinc but aside from that I think its role in health has been vastly overlooked by so many for too long.

It’s also interesting that zinc raises testosterone levels. I wonder if there is a correlation between decreased testosterone and increase in size of prostate and raised PSA and risk of prostate cancer as men age. Would HRT help or hurt with prostate issues?

A little over a month ago I watched your video on foods to eat to reduce or shrink the prostate. I had blood work done and my PSA was 4.16, so the urologist said come back in 30 days for more blood work. After that visit and watching your video, I made sure I added these foods to my diet. I had my 30 check up yesterday and my PSA was 4.15. I told the doctor I was working on shrinking my prostate with my diet.
He rolled his eyes and said, what a waste of time. He more than once said that my numbers are not that high, he wanted to schedule me for an MRI, I said, since my numbers are not that bad, give a year and let me continue working on my diet. "OH NO", was his reply. So now I have to go back in 3 months, I can tell he already annoyed with me because I will apparently be seeing a different person when I return.
I will spend the next 3 months shoving everything down my throat that shrinks a prostate, (except oysters, I can't do that).
I am always amazed at how little a doctor will work with you at trying to improve your health. If something is broken, go to the doctor to get it fixed, if you want to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle, watch YouTube!

Hey Dr. Berg, 67 yo male here with enlarged prostate and high PSA. Up until about 2 years ago, I was up at least 5 times per night to urinate. My research led me to possible selenium deficiency, so I started eating 1 Brazil nut per day and the problem resolved itself fairly quickly. Now I only get up 0 to 1 time(s) per night. Quite an amazing improvement! Also note that specifically designed prostate formulas did not appear to address this issue.
Had blood work recently so I shall find out if this helped lower my PSA number. Will next add zinc (and magnesium) rich foods to my diet to see if it reduces my chance of prostate cancer.

Very interesting relationship to the lack of zinc and the problems with the prostate. However it is notable that you end your video with the disclaimer that increasing your zinc intake does not necessarily reduce the incidence of those maladies. Many people do however think that vitamins/supplements do reduce certain afflictions....and perhaps that is why vitamins and supplements are a multi-billion dollar business. I feel that eating real healthy "Whole Foods" are the way to go.

I noticed if I take extra benfotiamine 2x, before I go to sleep. The body regulates peeing better, can sleep 2-3 times longer now. Probably in combination with diabetes, I lose water soluble vitamins.

Didn't know zinc could help with low testosterone, my doctor recommended me to take testosterone pills, confused why he wouldn't tell me how important zinc was to increase testosterone...

Thank you dr Berg for the information. If zinc increases testosterone in man, then it’s not good take zinc for prostate cancer patients as high testosterone feeds the cancer. Please correct me if I am wrong as this information is important for me to know if I should give zinc to the person who has advanced prostate cancer and is on medication to suppress testosterone. Thanks.

I listened with interest about zinc and shortages of that element, in france where I live zinc is used as a sacrificial anode in hot water systems so perhaps french men should suffer less from prostate problems than most

Thank you for addressing this issue! Can someone in their early 30's develop prostate issues? I have unexplained pelvic pain for two years and I've gone to urologists, neurologists, pelvic floor physical therapists...Any ideas??

It’s tough for me to decide what to do honestly. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn talks in depth about how plant based diets combat Coronary Artery Disease and he gives compelling data and arguments yet this Dr. is saying to consume red meat, cholesterol is ok etc. I think what I’m going to do is have the most well rounded diet possible and include a big handful of leafy greens with every meal. This is enough to make anyone lose their mind with concern

It's extremely annoying, I've always found, that academia of this nature is always so vastly expensive.

I wrote a paper in college about phytic acid and how white rice is superior to brown rice when it comes to nutrient absorption. Brown rice also causes inflammation as it is harder to digest.

With respect, you didn't add that, provided Veggies eat enough organic sheep/Goat dairy produce, regularly, they'll be fine. Especially if eating a small amount of organic nuts. Such as Brazils, Walnuts, pecans or Mac nuts. For Vegans, it's ESSENTIAL they vary there quality nuts AND organic greens regularly. Dark green LEAFIES give plenty of everything.

Zinc is such an important mineral especially for men! Testosterone, Sperm, Prostate, etc. cut out Grains, Carbs and Seeds preventing maximum zinc absorption.

I'm curious to know what the effects of the new cholesterol lowering meds like Repatha and Praluent have on zinc levels. I had to give up statins due to muscle pain but now having BPH and early onset of prostate cancer I'm wondering if I am wasting my time with trying to control these issues with zinc through diet and supplementation.

Doc, thank you so very much. I am consuming whole lemon and things gave really changed for me. I freeze a bag of lemons, then thaw one about every other day. I cut that whole lemon up add half a cup of water and the cut up lemon together in my blender. Blend and blend until is is very fine.
I put that mix in my fridge . When ever I get a glass of water I add shit if the lemon blend. Easy cheap and effective.

I spent literally days looking for my prostate. I even got a female friend with a rubber glove to prod around a bit. Then I realised only men have it! Silly me. I am blond after all!
