Whereas metformin antagonizes exercise-induced improvement in insulin sensitivity and cardiorespiratory fitness, an intervention study that investigated the effects of berberine and circuit training in sedentary, overweight men found that berberine enhanced the effects of exercise. It also potentiated the effects of aerobic exercise in diabetic rats, and showed higher levels of antioxidant enzymes in the animals' pancreatic tissues. Berberine attenuates the harmful effects of exhaustion-induced heart damage in mice, likely via its inhibitory effects on the release of reactive oxygen species and apoptosis of cardiomyocytes. In a mouse study, berberine decreased myostatin expression, and increase skeletal muscle mass, which was associated with the Smad pathway. In humans, there are insufficient studies, but bodybuilders often use berberine for a few months to increase glucose uptake (as it increases insulin sensitivity and muscle glucose uptake) and this effect when combined with sufficient weigh-training or resistance exercise may supercede the MTOR muscle atrophy effects. 49 Shawn Wells Shawn Wells 3 months ago Dihydroberberine has about 5x the bioavailability and lays 2x as long. Berberine converts into dihydroberberine in the gut and converts back to Berberine in the plasma. Metformin did have the recall, causes GI distress in some and B12 deficiency. Berberine outperformed metformin head to head on inflammation and dyslipidemia/hypercholesterolemia and performed the same on GDA front. Yes Berberine has lower bioavailability but dose solves that. 500mg 3x day... Or taking dihydroberberine at 150mg 2x day solves that. Dihydroberberine seems to solve the GI distress about 1/3 experience on both metformin and Berberine. Gut microbiome seems to create high variability in these GDAs and DHB seems to solve for that. The real question is the impact on mitochondria with all of this. Timing (keeping GDAs away from workout timing) and finding a dose that's a positive hormetic stress and promotes mitochondrial biogenesis versus overdosing these or using them too chronically where there may be some kind of distress. 38 siasina siasina 1 month ago Berberine overall has many other benefits over met form in. One thing to consider is that berberine has poor bioavailability because the gut microbiome takes it and utilizes it. Given that 80% of your immune system is in the gut, this makes it beneficial for lowering inflammation. For example, berberine is a JAK STAT inhibitor so it can help people with autoimmune diseases. 6 Johannes Paulsen Johannes Paulsen 3 months ago (edited) Very interesting topic. I developed type 2 diabetes at age 65. I was placed on Metformin 850 by my doctor. After 10 months of using this, I went for a blood test and general check up. My blood pressure went from 120/80 to 190/105. My blood sugar levels, despite being on a sugarless and low carbohydrate diet, was 9.2 instead of being below 6, preferably about 4.5. I took myself off Metformin and start using Berberine, 1000mg per day immediately. 4 days later, my blood pressure was normal, 120/80 and my blood sugar levels were 6 with a random blood test. 2 years later and I still use Berberine. I am still on a strict sugarless and low carb diet. My energy levels are quite good, not the best, but fair. I use a mega dose of various Vitamin B's. It's called B100, like Thiamine 100mg for example. It works great and can't wait for my daily dose because of the energy levels it gives me. 16 Lar Lar 3 months ago I know it's anecdotal, but Berberine is working for me and I plan to continue taking it in cycles. 14 Casey 3339 Casey 3339 3 months ago The best thing about your videos is that not only are they informative but unbias. I don't feel like I'm watching a commercial. This lends tremendous credibility to your work. 6 Dr Brad Stanfield oloblish oloblish 3 months ago I'm not really taking Berberine for Life extension, but instead for weight loss. It seems pretty effective so far 18 Bill B Bill B 3 months ago As far as I can tell, my liver makes too much glucose (BG ranges 100-125; even when I eat zero carbs). So I have recently been taking both metformin and berberine (capsules). It does appear to lower BG by at least ten points. Too early to tell how it affects blood work. 9 Jacob Debernardi Jacob Debernardi 3 months ago I have been waiting for this comparison for like a year and a half! Thank you. Activating AMPK through exercise seems like the best way to go about it. 7 Dr Brad Stanfield scientificsoul scientificsoul 3 months ago Hi Brad, as always thank you for your videos. Just want to correct a minor error: "Clinical heterogeneity" does not mean that the results (!) are different. It means that there is heterogeneity in terms of participant characteristics, dosage etc. Thus, it refers to the ways in which the data was created/collected, not the outcome of the data analysis. It has nothing to do with variation in terms of results or findings. 3 Dr Brad Stanfield The Anti-Aging Channel The Anti-Aging Channel 3 months ago If you are a healthy individual following an effective anti-aging lifestyle, and have no underlying health conditions to deal with, our own in house research concluded that berberine supplementation was unnecessary, except perhaps for its ability to improve acne in some individuals. We also concluded that potential metformin benefits can be influenced by so many factors. And that this, together with the current level of limited/conflicting research data regarding it's life extension potential in healthy individuals, meant that other than by closely monitoring the results of self experimentation, it's near impossible to make conclusive recommendations other than that further trials are necessary. Keep up the good work Brad. 4 Nick Jacques Nick Jacques 3 months ago Combining berberine with quercetin and a periodic cycle of calcium d-glucarate every couple weeks for a few days seems to help me with my weight. I started to take berberine and quercetin to lower inflammation and blood sugar. My man boobs were bad and I took calcium d-glucarate periodically to help control that. I did not notice any reduction in physical strength due to berberine. 14 Dr Brad Stanfield Rainer Langlotz Rainer Langlotz 3 months ago While I would follow your arguments with respect to Metformine, I will continue to take Berberine. The low bioavailabilty of Berberine HCl is due to its clumpiness as soon as water is added. This isn´t the case with tea from berberine containing plants where the berberine forms salts with higly soluble acids of that plant. I mix Berberine from capsules with 2ml of DMSO. The resulting slurry is perfectly soluble in hot water. (I use hot coffee which dims down the bitter taste). In this way dosage can (should?) be reduced to 250 mg/d or less. 15 Dr Brad Stanfield Marlene M Marlene M 3 months ago Dr. thank you for a detailed & thoughtful presentation. If I understand correctly, a takeaway is that for folks with low profile glucose/lipid dysregulation Metformin is (still) an effective addition to proper diet/exercise for T2 DM prevention? 3 Dr Brad Stanfield jarichards99utube jarichards99utube 3 months ago Great update. I like the IN DEPTH detailed analysis of the most current research. Thanks 😊 6 Dr Brad Stanfield C M C M 3 months ago Everything needs to be taken on a case by basis. I'm 49 and have been taking metformin for 1 year, I can not tell you how beneficial this has been for me. But one man's treasure, is another man's garbage 3 E Laine E Laine 2 months ago Several years ago I was badly overdosed on metformin and almost died. I dropped it the next and in a couple of weeks my hair was completely gray. Later I began small daily dose, about 1/20 of what I had been taking, and my hair has gone back to original color and I look 10 years younger. Will beberine have the same effect? 1 Dean Z Dean Z 3 months ago (edited) I can only speak for myself. I started Berberine about 3 months ago. Once per day with dinner. I use Now Berberine supplements. Before I started I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Im perfect weight and exercise everyday so I was shocked my sugar was elevated. I’m over 60. I immediately noticed I felt more normal and calm. Hmmm. Not sure why.. a month after I started it I took a physical for my work. My total cholesterol was 148. down from 169 a month earlier. A 13% drop. Hmmm. My avg blood sugar has been in the nineties. In most cases it is in the eighties. I take the reading right before lunch. I’m really surprised that my exercise is not affected at all by Berberine. Maybe it affects professional athletes, IDK, but not me. 14 Elaine Davenport Elaine Davenport 2 months ago This straight forward and informative video is so greatly appreciated! Thank you for this insight! Harold Beckala Harold Beckala 3 months ago Good information! Thanks. I still take a little berberine along with other supplements....note that a Study claims berberine regulates gut bacteria to produce less TMA from choline. If TMAO is atherogenic, this could help. 2 Gokhan M Gokhan M 3 months ago (edited) Metformin makes weight control easier for me. It has so much retrospective data regarding anti-aging and anti-cancer effects, one human RCT doesn't change my opinion --- at worst it will be useless, at best I'll get 7% life extension which ITP reported for male mice, or the 27% mortality reduction which was seen with T2D. (Seriously check out ITP data. They reported 7% life extension for male mice. Plus other mice experiments, not just ITP ). 2 Creighton Freeman Creighton Freeman 3 months ago You didn't mention that AMPK activation is inversely correlated with MTOR suppression. I'm not sure if that correlation is causal or not, but there is good evidence that MTOR suppression does extend healthy lifespan. That is why so many labs are looking for molecules that can mimic caloric restriction. 14 Dr Brad Stanfield Brian WNC Brian WNC 3 months ago Also, it's not true that we don't want to activate ampk for non-diabetics. If you want to live a long time and prevent age-related disease, you do need to activate ampk regularly, just not all the time. Intense exercise activates ampk. Activating ampk activates sirtuin1 and sirtuin6, which causes autophagy to happen within the cell, recycling cell components and cleaning out sticky junk proteins that build up as we age and ends up messing up the way our epigenetics activate our gene expression. Anti-aging is all about cycling through states of autophagy to clear out these harmful proteins, and autophagy is turned on by activating ampk. 6 David Sprouse David Sprouse 3 months ago Thanks for the video, Dr. Stanfield! One important aspect of Ber vs PCSK9 inhibitors is cost. PCSK9 inhibitors are expensive and difficult to get covered by insurance, whereas a person can easily and inexpensively try out berberine and see if it helps to further lower LDL. There are also some studies showing decreased body fat after berberine and numerous in vitro/animal studies showing potential anti-cancer effects. I hope they can increase/standardize absorption and do more well-designed clinical studies in the future! 8 Marvin Hersh Marvin Hersh 3 months ago Finally, some excellent data on METFORMIN and BERBERINE. Good on you Dr. Stanfield for providing this information. I also don’t take them. 😃 All the best to you in 2021. 8 Dr Brad Stanfield Bill B Bill B 9 days ago Update on this: After a couple of months of berberine plus metformin, SGLT-2 inhibitor, and GLP-1 mimetic (semaglutide), my BG and A1c are finally in normal range (BG 72, A1c 5.6). Also my very long stall in weight loss appears to be over. My interpretation of this is that elevated cortisol was promoting too much gluconeogenesis, which kept BG and insulin elevated, which prevented fat burning regardless of how few calories I ate. By suppressing gluconeogenesis with the mix above, it finally allowed my low-carb diet to work correctly. TLDR: Berberine PLUS everything else was the key (for me). Lawdog Wales Lawdog Wales 3 months ago Great history lesson on these two compounds. I don't take either one of them. 1 Dr Brad Stanfield Fred Clause Fred Clause 3 months ago My blood sugar is consistently between 95-99. Is that considered high to where metformin/berberine would be helpful? Thanks for the great videos! Roland Roland 3 months ago First i stopped taking resveratrol and now berberine. Hopefully quercetin isn't gonna fall in the same category soon. 4 Dr Brad Stanfield Thomas Raywood Thomas Raywood 2 months ago Strong arguments, Dr. Stanfield. But please, tell me, what about when used temporarily and only as part of a senolytics package? I think it goes without saying that when one has engaged a course of senolytics, that's not a period where they're worried about anything that that might diminish exercise performance. Ghost of R/T Ghost of R/T 3 months ago As a medical herbalist I would not use Berberine alone for what you’re trying to achieve. Instead, Berberine would ideally be part of a formula, usually comprising of 5-6 other medicinal herbs. And as you also alluded to, there would be lifestyle, dietary and exercise adjustments made to compliment this approach. Thank you for your videos, I enjoy the research that goes behind them. 8 Maxim Poz Maxim Poz 3 months ago What do you make of the argument (Huberman et al make it) that taking berberine at the end of eating for the day gets the body to a fasted state faster and could be used to add a couple of extra hours to an IF regiment. I think the idea is that when you put down the fork, the body takes time go into a fasting state. The extra fasting hours would presumably have all sorts of positive downstream consequences. Really appreciate your channel. 2 Ian Sane Ian Sane 2 weeks ago (edited) I started taking Lipo Berberine (1x150 mg/day)for one week now. I have arthritis in my right hip and the stiffness and pain leaves me with a slight limp. I take turmeric daily to lower the inflammation. But I don’t feel stiffness or pain since starting Berberine. I’m amazed that I’m walking normally! Is Berberine that strong of anti- inflammatory ? Is it working with the help of the turmeric? Has anyone else had the same results? I’ll comment again in 2 weeks but so far I’m grateful to not have pain in my hip. Any comments will be much appreciated. I-heart-Google I-heart-Google 3 months ago Hi Brad, while I think Sinclair should debate you, I also think that you should give a plausible logical explanation, or at least a theory, on why he (despite his age) has not developed gray hair yet. He takes both resveratrol and metformin, chems that you quit taking. He must be doing something right....right? 7 Art La Art La 2 months ago Hi, Thanks so much for the information you provide in your videos. Can you please respond to the papers David Sinclear published in his latests video about supplements. He claims that Metmorphin does affect longevity, not only through AMPK activation. Maybe worth showing the evidence provided in that podcast and explaining your opinion on that. Thanks!! 2 Thomas Walz Thomas Walz 3 months ago I have Morton's neuroma. Berberine allows me to be able to wear shoes all day long. Before, I could only last no more than 6 hours. I will continue to take it for this reason. I wish there was a derivative of Berberine that would allow it to be processed more efficiently by the liver. Would Metformin do the same for me? 2 Kevin Walsh Kevin Walsh 3 months ago You also take niacin which helps with cholesterol (though I'm aware you take it for it's NAD+ benefits). That detail seemed missing at the end. M T M T 3 months ago (edited) Low absorption or bioavailability did not negate the effectiveness of Berberine in clinical trials, using 500mg 3 times a day. So those are non factors to influence my decision to take Berberine. Even if only 1% is used by my body, as long as it does what is needed, so what? In addition, Berberine has shown less negative side effect vs statin and has thousands of years of real life experience, why not use it to lower cholesterol? Most people showing metabolic syndromes usually have both insulin resistance and cholesterol issues at the same time, why not just take one supplement and deal with both at the same time? Edit - I looked up the berberine and gut microbiome and found studies showing that berberine can impact certain gut bacteria like Ruminococcus Bromii, so this can contribute to the effectiveness of berberine without the need for berberine to be absorbed. 4 holidaythailand2010 holidaythailand2010 3 months ago More information is needed on the pros and cons, dependent on Age etc, metformin is cheap as is berberine, the research is needed on borderline prediabetic patients, which in the West, will be many over 50. 1 Dksncz Tbsdjds Dksncz Tbsdjds 3 months ago Hey Brad. Joseph DiMasi Joseph DiMasi 3 months ago Liposomal Berberine is available these days... really should be used for these trials to pull the absorption issue out of the equation. Anyone have any experience with a liposomal berberine product (eg Alive By Science)? 1 John Hemming John Hemming 3 months ago The variation between milliMolar concentrations of Metformin and nanoMolar concentrations of Berberine in serum is interesting. However, given that Berberine has an evidenced effect on ldl Cholesterol one has to assume that a nanoMolar concentration is sufficient to do something. We don't know whether it concentrates in the cells or not., I quite like it because it does not have a downside. Hence I would intend to continue to take it. 8 Dr Brad Stanfield J K J K 2 months ago Berberine seems to cause lymphedema in my lower right leg and right foot, which I believe is a sign of liver issues? Rajesh Chheda Rajesh Chheda 3 months ago Berberine vs Metaformin debate is going to be a very long one. Dr Brad Stanfield's analysis hits the Bulls eye. I know of a Doctor, who liberally used Metaformin to help his non-diabetic patients to lose weight, along with some other meds plus cutting out white foods from diet. I know just two patients one male and one female. Both in their mid-thirties. Both lost weight drastically within just few months....... surprise surprise for me was that both went on to develop diabetes type 2 after 3 years. Of course there are many more factors at play and I do not know the results of other patients, plus I am unaware of other meds used. Metaformin is a gift from Mother Nature, it is upto us to use it wisely. Ampk activation through Metaformin is not without downsides. Metaformin negates benefits of exercise. Dr Brad, please continue your good work. It helps make an informed choice and decision. 1 Cristina Nicholls Cristina Nicholls 3 months ago Thanks for your information Red yeast rice For reducing cholesterol do you know anything about it?
