And perhaps it's a stretch to call it "great" but I absolutely LOVE the beautifully choreographed "traditional" dance performed by Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in The Sound of Music. Seamlessly inserted into the story, it nevertheless moves the plot forward and is, for my money, one of the sweetest dance routines ever put on film. 10 Reply 1 reply @Dragonspun @Dragonspun 2 years ago (edited) I was super happy to see Seven Brides for Seven Brothers included among these iconic movies. I think it's a very underrated movie. Even if you thought the story was silly, there was so much choreography and good writing in there, it's a classic. <3 182 Reply 9 replies @amymoquin8636 @amymoquin8636 1 year ago One of my all time favorite dance performances is from Singing in the Rain. People often forget the genius choreography from Moses. Donald O'Connor and Kelly were brilliant. Tap dancing their way on top of the desks with slippery paper falling under their feet is awesome. Donald O'Connor is one of the best dancers of all time!!! 26 Reply @Other3.5 @Other3.5 2 years ago (edited) Every time I see Gene Kelly’s “Singing in the Rain” I just smile. What a lovely routine. Warms the heart. 143 Reply 4 replies @ddraigmafon4725 @ddraigmafon4725 1 year ago (edited) No matter how down I am, Footloose never fails to put a smile on my face and get my feet dancing, such an infectiously happy song. 49 Reply @olvialee7221 @olvialee7221 2 years ago (edited) My mom mastered one of these dances and that is what a feeling. She performed it in a talent show at a old school. Everyone applauded for her 43 Reply 1 reply @fredericglatter906 @fredericglatter906 3 years ago (edited) Gene Kelly's "Singing in the Rain" dance is a perfect number one, but his amazing dance number with Cyd Charisse later in the film certainly deserved mention. 335 Reply 30 replies @dawnwelch6579 @dawnwelch6579 2 years ago (edited) One of my all-time favorite movie dance scenes is when the Jets have to be “Cool!” Such spectacular and emotional dancing!! Unbelievable that then-19 year old Eliot “Baby John” Feld was terribly sick during this number and STILL killed it with all the rest! 31 Reply 3 replies @irenemills6998 @irenemills6998 1 year ago (edited) So many great, entertaining moments. Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr in the famous "Shall We Dance" ballroom dance scene. Shirley Temple with Mr. Bill Robinson dancing on the stairs in The Little Colonol. Travolta and Uma Thurman doing the Twist in Pulp Fiction to "You Never Can Tell". The large crowd dance in the desert in Jesus Christ Superstar. Can Bye, Bye Birdie w/Ann Margaret get an honorable mention? The "Super Freak" dance in Little Miss Sunshine. I couldn't help but smile all the way through the dance scene to "That's How You Know" in Central Park in the movie Enchanted. The Breakfast Club dance scene when the kids are in detention. The cringe worthy dance of Napolean Dynamite. Too many awesome dances of Anne Miller, Danny Kaye, Donald O'Conner. What about Ester Williams with her underwater dances? Tom Cruise - not in Risky Business, but the comedic dance in Tropic Thunder. So many memorable dance scenes creating fun times. One more - I don't remember the movie, but Christopher Walken dancing through a building - awesome. 18 Reply 1 reply @lisachauvin @lisachauvin 2 years ago (edited) “Whatever Lola Wants” or “Who’s Got the Pain” from “Damn Yankees” needed to be here. Both dance numbers are truly iconic and how can the incomparable Gwen Verdon not be a part of this? 54 Reply 2 replies @jerrycollins5012 @jerrycollins5012 2 years ago (edited) Fred Astaire and Elinor Powell dancing to Begin the Bigine is my absolute favorite dance scene . These are very complicated steps yet they make it look effortless. 48 Reply 4 replies @iamunce @iamunce 1 year ago (edited) The word "flashdance" was invented to describe the Nicholas Brothers. They should be number 1 in any list of dance numbers. And you should see them in Down Argentina Way. Amazing. 33 Reply 1 reply @roskatvalencia6323 @roskatvalencia6323 3 years ago (edited) Bob Fosse is mentioned three times in this video (Cabaret, All that Jazz and Chicago - the choreography is from the musical theater version he did). He was a great genius. :) 157 Reply 6 replies @gowanusgirl @gowanusgirl 2 years ago (edited) The Nicholas Brothers were phenomenal and deserved much more than they got. Today they would have been celebrated to the hilt. So much talent. 368 Reply 35 replies @agkittyhook2257 @agkittyhook2257 2 years ago (edited) Pretty much all of the dance sequences in Strictly Ballrom were incredible, especially when Scott learns the real Paso Doble from Fran's father, Scott's after hours solo in the studio & and the backstage rumba. Also, how could you not include Pony Song from Magic Mike? The duet between JLo & Richard Gere in Shall We Dance was good and the teacher/student duet and the threeway finale dance in Take the Lead were impressive as well. 37 Reply 1 reply @seriouslyreally5413 @seriouslyreally5413 2 years ago (edited) Honorable mention: Shirly temple with Bill "Bojangles" Robinson any scene they danced together was amazing! A Five year old keeping up with a professional tap dancer was amazing. 90 Reply 2 replies @shpgrl1026 @shpgrl1026 2 years ago (edited) Honestly, there are so many good dance scenes in movies. This list could go on forever. 134 Reply 1 reply @fishstick7104 @fishstick7104 2 years ago (edited) I can't believe you mentioned 7 Brides for 7 Brothers!!! That was my favorite musical growing up! And I memorized that dance sequence! Well, as much as I could! 🥰 12 Reply @heatherhillman7280 @heatherhillman7280 2 years ago (edited) Sorry, the Hines/Baryshnikov dance from White Nights deserves a spot on the list, not an honorable mention. 369 Reply 31 replies @sonjadarby1158 @sonjadarby1158 3 years ago (edited) Strictly Ballroom was such an underrated move. Loved it from beginning to end. 255 Reply 14 replies @tracymcdougall @tracymcdougall 2 years ago (edited) I think Shall We Dance from the King and I is one of the most iconic dance scenes ever filmed! It’s magical! 469 Reply 14 replies @allisonshaw9341 @allisonshaw9341 2 years ago (edited) Fun fact: Jumpin' Jive was shot in one take and without rehearsal. The Nicholas brothers were the greatest dancers of all time, and even Fred Astaire said so. 410 Reply 7 replies @cindystrachan8566 @cindystrachan8566 2 years ago (edited) Thank you for including Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The dancing is amazing and athletic and I never cease to be amazed when Russ Tamblyn dives head first off the second floor of the barn and tuck rolls at the last second and co rubies the dance fight. One of Hollywood’s best ever musicals. 238 Reply 9 replies @canamus1768 @canamus1768 1 year ago (edited) while fed and ginger are iconic, his knockout pairing with eleanor powell in cole porter's "begin the beguine" (from "broadway melody of 1940") is absolutely amazing. powell was completely astaire's equal as far her phenomenal capabilities as a dancer, and it really shows in this routine: two masters at the peak of their art. 14 Reply 3 replies @krab1791 @krab1791 2 years ago (edited) I love that you included White Nights eve if it is an honorable mention because yes both both Masters deserve credit for the amazing work they did. 94 Reply 3 replies @reesaserik3759 @reesaserik3759 2 years ago (edited) I was born in 1961; but I saw West Side Story on TV when I was about 12 years old and it blew me away. It always remained in my head. Just something about it. 15 Reply 4 replies @georgiewatson8688 @georgiewatson8688 2 years ago (edited) I actually loved the Jazz Hot routine from Victor, Victoria. 30 Reply 1 reply @honestreviewsonly1915 @honestreviewsonly1915 1 month ago Fred Astaire and Elenor Powell tap dancing to “Begin the Beguine” is phenomenal! 2 Reply @jamestnov41945 @jamestnov41945 1 year ago (edited) Bob Fosse is a genius and any musical he helps create instant success. 9 Reply @thepineapple8434 @thepineapple8434 2 months ago It‘s crazy how acrobatic the dances were back in the day. You don’t see that nowadays.. absolutely insane! 2 Reply @jennacarr818 @jennacarr818 2 years ago (edited) I love that SBfSB hit the 7th spot, nice touch! Deeply underrated classic! I'm surprised not even an honorable mention for Astaire's "Ceiling" dance in "Royal Wedding." 26 Reply 1 reply @tessat338 @tessat338 2 years ago (edited) "Cellblock Tango" is actually difficult to dance the tango to, because it isn't really written as a partners dance. Ginger Roger's dress in "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" was beautiful but it shed feathers the whole time. Fred Astaire said that it was like dancing with a snow storm. After that, his nick-name for her was "Feathers." 11 Reply @katherineculbreath122 @katherineculbreath122 2 years ago (edited) Maybe it’s just because I grew up with this movie, but Center Stage will always have a special place in my heart! Both the jazz class at Broadway dance center and the final dance are classic dance scenes with amazing dancing and choreography!!! 3 Reply 1 reply @reesaserik3759 @reesaserik3759 2 years ago (edited) I really liked "All that Jazz". The dancing is phenomenal in it. I watched this movie in 1979, I was 18. Then I watched it on the internet about 10 years ago and was just as amazed by it as I was back in 1979. The only difference was, in my early 50's I had a better understanding of what the movie was about. As a teenager, I was just drawn in by the dancing. 10 Reply @akilahwashington415 @akilahwashington415 1 year ago (edited) This list makes me smile. So many great memories! Another honorable mention: Marilyn Monroe, Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend. The beautiful ballet dancers in the beginning, in their soft long pink tutus and flowers in their hair. The Men lifting her across the floor seamlessly towards the camera. It seems simple, but it’s not. As a former dancer I can attest to this. All the subtleties in the movements and arm placements. Of course the little shimmies that just flow naturally, so they seem so easy. The singing and the iconic outfit she wears, tends to outshine the dance number itself. 💖 11 Reply @TheScottAllenKennedy @TheScottAllenKennedy 2 years ago (edited) I agree - Donald O'Connor's "Make em laugh" is absolutely phenomenal. Its hard to rate things like this against each other, but overall I think you got them all right, but Dirty Dancing should have probably been farther down the list and Eleanor Powell should have been on the list - everyone says Fred and Ginger, but Eleanor was a far superior partner and dancer......and she didnt look at her feet, the way Ginger did. 43 Reply 2 replies @merrytunes8697 @merrytunes8697 1 year ago (edited) A Chorus Line has been one of my favorite musicals since I was a kid. i loved Stormy Weather, Grease, Flashdance and Dirty Dancing as well. 7 Reply @jderr557 @jderr557 1 year ago (edited) I don't know how you could omit Eleanor Powell, the Queen of Tap, especially with Fred Astaire, dancing to Begin the Beguine. But Eleanor Powell in anything beats anything else. 2 Reply @lightwork11 @lightwork11 2 years ago (edited) This is a wonderful video. I also loved "If My Friends Could See Me Now" from Sweet Charity. Performed by Shirley MacLaine. 16 Reply @valeriebailey8921 @valeriebailey8921 1 month ago I once told my Mom that the singin' in the rain sequence was one of the greatest pieces in movie history! I don't know why it struck me. Perhaps because I love singing, dancing, and being in the rain!!!❤❤❤ 4 Reply 1 reply @PoppySeed47 @PoppySeed47 10 months ago (edited) I loved A Chorus Line and as a kid with my friends would try to learn the audition dance and final dance, good times. I still love the style of that eras dance ware, shinny lycra leotards & catsuit, leg warmers & jazz shoes 😁. 5 Reply 1 reply @AmieBello @AmieBello 3 years ago (edited) The dance in the sewers from Guys and Dolls. One of the greatest dance numbers of all time, either on stage or on screen. 42 Reply 1 reply @mrs.thomas-usmcwife5686 @mrs.thomas-usmcwife5686 2 years ago (edited) I love that Singing In the Rain made #1! Gene Kelley was sick with a fever during that scene though you can't tell it. The old musicals were full of such true talent that is scarce today. One of my other favorites is the Masquerade scene in Phantom of the Opera. 13 Reply 1 reply @JoAnna-cv2yz @JoAnna-cv2yz 1 month ago I would love to have seen the "Dem Bones" dance scene in The Band Wagon with Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. Pretty amazing. One of my favorites! It's great that the ballet in An American in Paris and "America" in West Side Story were mentioned. Both absolutely fantastic! Also the "Play It Cool" dance sequence in West Side Story was incredible! Highly energetic. 1 Reply @babslovesbooksleathers188 @babslovesbooksleathers188 1 year ago (edited) White Christmas is one of my favorite movies. And Mandy is a lot of fun. However, the best dancing in that musical is Choreography. When Vera-Ellen descends to perform her machine-gun tempo taps I become mesmerized. A good list. 5 Reply @annebodee @annebodee 2 years ago (edited) Definitely agree with #1. Gene Kelly's athleticism was amazing. 12 Reply @bethanyauble7934 @bethanyauble7934 11 months ago (edited) 20: "El Tango de Roxanne" - Moulin Rouge 19: "Cell Block Tango" - Chicago 18: "Mein Herr" - Cabaret 17: "Cheek to Cheek" - Top Hat 16: "Jumpin' Jive" - Stormy Weather 15: "There'll Be Some Changes Made" - All That Jazz 14: "Time Warp" - The Rocky Horror Picture Show 13: "Fame" - Fame 12: "Town Called Malice" - Billy Elliot 11: "The Audition Song" - A Chorus Line 10: "Rich Man's Frug" - Sweet Charity 9: "Alex's Audition" - Flashdance 8: "You're the One That I Want" - Grease 7: "The Barn Dance" - Seven Brides for Seven Brothers 6: "Step in Time" - Mary Poppins 5: "The Final Dance" - Footloose 4: "You Should Be Dancing" - Saturday Night Fever 3: "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" - Dirty Dancing 2: "Dance at the Gym" - West Side Story 1: "Singin' in the Rain" - Singing in the Rain 1 Reply @Tarabara @Tarabara 3 years ago (edited) I'm so glad The Barn Dance from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers made the top 10! It's one of my favorite dance scenes of all time! 31 Reply @terryloh8583 @terryloh8583 2 years ago A surprisingly good list. I understand that you don't want any one dancer to dominate the list, but I think that Astaire's "You're All The World To Me" from Royal Wedding and his hat rack dance from the same movie are at least worth an honorable mention. I would also say that the Nicholas Brothers' "Jumpin Jive" dance sequence from Stormy Weather is spectacular. 1 Reply @tammypoleski447 @tammypoleski447 1 year ago (edited) The dance with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in The Sound of Music should have been on this!! It was absolutely beautiful!! 5 Reply 2 replies @AleisterCrowleyMagus @AleisterCrowleyMagus 2 years ago (edited) Jennifer Beals face is still one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my life — yes I know it isn’t her dancing here but her coy sadness when looking at the judges (and her incredibly young age — she was 18!) is amazing! 5 Reply @VOR32 @VOR32 2 years ago (edited) I'm in the age group that can recall most musicals, from the Busby Berkeley era of the '30s up to the present day offerings. It would be impossible to name everyone's favourite musical dance scene as tastes change over the years. Every musical ever made brings something to the table. I'll just say, to quote ABBA, "Thank you for the Music." 41 Reply 4 replies @womenlovesports2315 @womenlovesports2315 1 year ago (edited) Should definitely include “Idlewild” in this countdown. The dances/choreography in that movie was amazing! 2 Reply @socialswithmichelle @socialswithmichelle 3 years ago (edited) I love Grease, but there is no universe in which their choreography is better than that in Chicago. Every list from Mojo from the past few months has simply missed the mark 87 Reply 7 replies @DawnOldham @DawnOldham 2 years ago (edited) I had a smile on my face for the entire 24 minutes! 9 Reply @jeffreywarrensmith581 @jeffreywarrensmith581 2 years ago (edited) I've always loved Ann Margaret dressed in pink in the crazy dance number in Bye Bye Birdie myself. But the Nicholas Brothers were the greatest really. 14 Reply @seantlewis376 @seantlewis376 1 year ago (edited) You could do an entire list just based on Bob Fosse. He was the greatest choreographer of the century. 3 Reply @triciaolpin3699 @triciaolpin3699 1 year ago (edited) Love musicals!!! Great list. White Nights is one of my favorites. So many wonderful performances. (Also, there so many others. The list could go on and on….) Pure joy! 4 Reply @ndbyers23 @ndbyers23 1 month ago A movie that deserves more notice is Shall We Dance (1996) the Japanese version with English subtitles. A beautiful expression of the love of dance. 2 Reply @jessiccaprice786 @jessiccaprice786 2 years ago (edited) So glad to see Seven Brides to Seven Brothers recognized... it's such an amazing musical that doesn't get enough credit. It's my favorite movie of all time!! 4 Reply @rosalindwatkins4538 @rosalindwatkins4538 1 year ago (edited) I did love Cabaret-and Mein Herr was the routine I tried to replicate! Anything Fosse was worthy! The Time Warp was definitely easier, and I didn’t have to make a fool of myself by myself! Dirty Dancing was too captivating to stop watching long enough to mimic the moves! 2 Reply @michaelc.figura-patterson8991 @michaelc.figura-patterson8991 1 year ago (edited) My heart is super happy to see Seven Brides for Seven Brothers -- and in the top 10 no less.. This is my favorite musical and this dance scene I watch over and over... Never gets old.. 2 Reply @PeteTheGeek196 @PeteTheGeek196 3 years ago (edited) It is so nice to see dance movies being celebrated and I appreciate your detailed analysis of the featured scenes. 8 Reply @marilynwebb2679 @marilynwebb2679 1 year ago (edited) Mandy is one of my favorite dance scenes in a movie. The way Vera ellen moved her legs is just mezmerizing. I can watch that scene over and over again. 3 Reply 1 reply @scottodonnell7121 @scottodonnell7121 1 year ago (edited) The dance contest scene in the gym in "Grease" was WAY better than The One that I Want. It took months to film and was great fun. Also a few other favs: The wedding scene from "The Deerhunter" with the European dance. The Ballroom scene with Spike Lee and Denzel Washington in "Malcom X". 1 Reply @triciap1874 @triciap1874 1 year ago (edited) Gene Kelly Singing in the Rain was a perfect first choice! If you research more about how ill he was during this filming it makes it even more beautiful. 5 Reply @sampa2nyc @sampa2nyc 3 years ago (edited) The funny thing about the ionic "Fame" number was that it was actually choreographed. Choreographer, Louis Falco divided the cast into 10 groups of 10. Each group would then move through the set/street. I suppose within the groups people could do their own thing. Also, not everyone at the school is a dance major so it makes sense and adds to the realism of the scene if not everyone is moving like a trained dancer. 8 Reply @saturnianali8r @saturnianali8r 2 years ago (edited) I love that Rich Man's Frug made it. Suzanne Charney puts on an amazing performance in that and the Fosse choreography is so much weird fun. 9 Reply 2 replies @sigil8386 @sigil8386 1 month ago Delighted that you added the Tango from Moulin Rouge!! Such an intense and precise dance. I totally agree with the list but then also remembered Diamonds are a Girls's Best Friends. 1 Reply @captainsplifford @captainsplifford 2 years ago (edited) While I love "Step In Time," my favorite Dick Van Dyke dance number is "Me Old Bamboo" from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Also, not for nothing, I think Robin Williams' going through the examples of different choreographers from The Birdcage should have gotten an honorable mention. 19 Reply @ireneblainey6204 @ireneblainey6204 1 year ago (edited) El Tango De Roxane deserves #1 it is literally one of the most well made and choreographed scenes ever. 1 Reply @SusanCallHutchison @SusanCallHutchison 2 years ago (edited) I would have mentioned the last 20 minutes of the musical "Scrooge!" with Thank You Very Much, Father Christmas, Sing a Christmas Carol, etc. Love the choreography in that movie. 7 Reply @BigDaddyJinx @BigDaddyJinx 2 years ago (edited) I agree with this list. Musical numbers and well done choreography will never get old. It seems to be a lost art sadly. 1 Reply @FlyingVGoddess @FlyingVGoddess 1 year ago (edited) The Snow Dance in Memoirs of a Geisha. The dance looks simpler than it actually is with every movement being meticulously choreographed to tell a story of a heartbroken courtesan who wanders into the snow to die. Zhang Ziyi also performed the dance in 10” platform sandals and slippery fake snow. The dance is a pivotal point in the plot as it helps Sayuri catch the eye of several men that would help secure her position as a top geisha as well as attracting unwanted attention the Baron, her mentor’s patron and lover. Reply @tommunyon2874 @tommunyon2874 2 years ago (edited) In my youth I was an Arthur Murray ballroom dance instructor. The tango is definitely among my favorites--a license to become a total drama queen. 5 Reply 1 reply @mbsheisey @mbsheisey 2 months ago I shouted out loud when you showed the scene from "Strictly Ballroom!" Absolutely loved that movie! 2 Reply @alanbarrie5777 @alanbarrie5777 1 year ago (edited) Knowing how very ill Gene Keĺly was during filming the iconic scene only makes it more incredible. It would be grand if the finale scene of Bootmen (the Australian company Tap Dogs were founded in this story i believe) could be noted. So much fun and all my boys enjoyed messing afterwards. Also the finale of Centrestage sets the monkeys jumping and asking for Mum to show them how to do things properly. Since MS hit, its been hard but, she still tries ..... thats when it gets funny! Reply @janedoe805 @janedoe805 2 years ago (edited) I’m 60 years old and I remember being 5 or 6 years old standing on my Daddy’s toes as he danced around to Fred Astaire singing, “Cheek to Check”. So, my vote goes to Fred & Ginger! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 39 Reply 1 reply @christinalwilliams8076 @christinalwilliams8076 2 years ago (edited) One of the most UNDERRATED dance scenes in the movie 'TAP' is when all the greatest tap dancers, AND dancers of all time, come together to show Max how to really get down on the dance floor. Dancers like Sandman Simms, Jimmy Slyde, Sammy Davis Jr and Harold Nicholas of The Nicholas Brothers were maybe 80+ plus years of age and they showed they still got it!! A must to consider for UNDERRATED dance scenes in a movie. 1 Reply @onwego1946 @onwego1946 2 years ago (edited) As Ginger Rogers said when people gushed over Fred Astaire's talent, "I do everything he does only backward and in high heels." 201 Reply 7 replies @benjaminpearce200 @benjaminpearce200 3 years ago (edited) Ok but I totally agree with the first pick. "Singin' In The Rain" is the most purely joyful dance number ever filmed. It's so happy it never fails to make me cry...go figure. 8 Reply @erichoffman2908 @erichoffman2908 3 years ago (edited) James Cagney dancing down the stairs at the end of Yankee Doodle Dandy should have at least been an honorable mention. 77 Reply 8 replies @sueparras6028 @sueparras6028 1 year ago (edited) I think everyone knew that Singing in The Rain would be number one! It is an iconic dance number and only the supremely talented Gene Kelly could have pulled it off so exquisitely! So, even IF some felt Barbra was miscast, the fellas she danced with in the " Harmonia Gardens" scene deserve some credit for THEIR precision, especially since they were directed by Gene Kelly as well. So yes. I feel HELLO DOLLY, arguably one of the best musical-to-screen films ever, should be here for that one scene! 😠😭😭😭😭😭 1 Reply @nycmermaid3158 @nycmermaid3158 1 year ago (edited) I knew, interviewed and worked with Fayard Nicholas in the last decade of his life. He was an extraordinary, light filled, human being. He told me he taught Michael Jackson how to do the Moonwalk. I also asked him how did he rise up from those amazing splits? He said, “well once you’re down, you just come on up!” Obviously, it worked for him. God Bless him. 2 Reply @asifkhan4822 @asifkhan4822 3 years ago (edited) I love the scene in Risky Business where Tom Cruise is dancing in his undies and open shirt to the classic Old time rock & roll by Bob Seger and the silver bullet band. That scene is sheer classic starting when Cruise slides into frame during the opening beat - he may have become a mega star with Top Gun but this was the movie that catupulted him to stardom. 3 Reply 1 reply @bronwynberman7401 @bronwynberman7401 2 years ago (edited) I’ve always liked “Make ‘Em Laugh” from “Singing in the Rain”, too. 27 Reply 4 replies @williamsmith752 @williamsmith752 2 years ago (edited) The Nicolas Brothers in stormy weather...is the greatest of them all....and they did it in ONE TAKE!! 34 Reply @terihinchcliffe5511 @terihinchcliffe5511 2 years ago (edited) The best dancer ever is Cynthia Rhodes in FLASHDANCE. It was such a tight and difficult dance routine that if one dancer would have been even slightly off it would have wiped out all the dancers .This routine still blows me away! And there are two dance routines in "Singing in the Rain". Of course, Gene Kelly's dance to the title song and the other is performed by Donald O'Connor in a living room set with flips being done using the walls. IMO Donald O'Connor was a better dancer than Gene Kelly. 12 Reply 2 replies @suzannac.6057 @suzannac.6057 3 years ago (edited) I'm so glad they mentioned those dance scenes from "White Nights" & "Strictly Ballroom"... In "Grease" the two gangs were not rivals, the Pink Ladies dated the T-birds. "Xanadu" was not a very good movie but the dance scene between the two visions, those of Danny (Gene Kelly) and Sonny (Michael Beck), in the club was fantastic! 1 Reply @joannshorter127 @joannshorter127 1 year ago (edited) I enjoyed your list & agreed with all of your choices but would have ranked "Cell-block Tango" much much higher. One wonders if MOJO develops their various lists from a voted audience perspective…or strictly from their own… Reply @texas4197 @texas4197 2 years ago (edited) Can't argue with this list. But I think Donald O'Connor's "Make 'Em Laugh" deserves to be mentioned as equal to Kelly's "Singin in the Rain." Kelly portrays love in all its pieces, giddy, romantic, dashing and strong. But O'Connor exemplifies joy, humor, and a great love for dancing. Hard to separate the two as to quality. I know there isn't room for more than one from a musical, but I sure wish we could include any of the dances with Kelly, O'Connor, and the neophyte Debbie Reynolds. They capture the energy of new friendships and youthful excitement for working in the theatre. Maybe a second Mojo list of Best Group Dance Scenes (3 or more dancers)? They both had pure attitude when they danced. Dancing is not just body movement, but also attitude reflected in the face. These two men had it oozing out of them. I notice someone else mentioned it below (very wise :) ) and right now has 248 likes. It is probably the best dance scene of all time to probably millions. From my view, Cyd Charisse was the best dancer of all time (and Gene Kelly right up there with her). She did a similar number with Fred Astaire in Bandwagon. Again, just stunning to watch. Also I'd add the tango scene with Salma Hayak and Ashley Judd from Frida, as well as the Antonio Banderas number (also tango) from Take the Lead- (Wow!! ). The gym dance scene in West Side Story- I'm glad to see it there but what about I like it Here in America was every bit as good? Jerome Robbins was an amazing choreographer. And another that probably a lot of people don't know about is where the incredible Ann Reinking dances with the little girl in All that Jazz. So when I say this dance is iconic I mean it. Not just because it is an amazing dance (it is) but also because it LITERALLY CHANGED THE HISTORY OF DANCE IN FILM. I had a neighbor with a... honestly I forget what degree they had. Point is, they were someone who knew this subject and they gave me a long and informative talk/lecture on the history of the impact this song had on the culture at the time, films following it's debut, and it's impact on dancing in general. It was a lot. Seriously, pre singing in the rain? Weather and lighting were just... things you had on set during a dance scene. They weren't really used the way we think of them today. You can thank Singing in the Rain for weather and lighting having more key roles in the years to come. Kind of like how Its a Wonderful Life changed how snow is filmed. The film also influenced, although in a much less felt way, other parts of dance in film. Background props interacted with more heavily? Background characters watching the performer without joy and/or not participating? Interacting with set pieces the way they are interacted with in that song? This song and dance will probably stay #1 on lists like this for decades to come just for the impact it had on film. I mean, you can /literally/ see it's influence in every dance on this list that was created after this film. (Side note, Jumpin' Jive deserved to impact history the way Singing in the Rain did but, alas, racism. We do feel it's impact, but the credit of 'who influenced this' often goes to other films) Reply @rhondafortson5205 @rhondafortson5205 2 years ago (edited) Never saw a dance sequence that I did not like...they are all good/great. So many great routines in that movie. And the Nicolas Brothers should have much higher on the list. Those guys were freaking genius. 76 Reply 6 replies @nerdy_nurse @nerdy_nurse 1 year ago (edited) My favorite is Fred and Ginger singing “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” and dancing on ROLLER SKATES! 1 Reply @PoggeB13 @PoggeB13 1 year ago (edited) That routine from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is rarely included in these lists and it should be on all of them. 9 Reply @einahsirro1488 @einahsirro1488 1 year ago (edited) Tango de Roxanne should be higher on the list. This is the best musical ever from Hollywood. Reply 1 reply
