One of the missing pieces of this discussion is that so many of the "age related diseases" are actually LIFESTYLE related diseases. The lifestyle one has lived for decades simply catches up with one the longer they've been around. Research already shows that lifestyle (physical activity, diet, social connections, smoking, etc) has a huge impact on morbidity and mortality on a population level.

I retired at 48, and for 10 years I work out, swim every day, eat right, sleep enough, avoiding all financial and family stresses. It simply does not work, I age every year, and I notice it. I am not afraid of aging and dying, I just monitor myself for fun because I do not need to work. Probably to prevent aging one has to use a lot of medications.

The research that the scientifics are doing is very interesting. I didn’t know about this, but I’m very surprised at the posibility of slowing down or even stopping the aging proccess. What caught my attention was that they are not only interested in aging, but also in a healthy aging and about the positive effects on our society.

The concept of slowing down the aging process through scientific techniques like fasting, epigenetic reprogramming, and parabiosis sparks intriguing possibilities. The mention of these methods raises questions about the potential for realizing a "Peter Pan" dream of staying perpetually young. The intersection of science and aging opens up exciting avenues for exploration and raises hope for innovative approaches to enhance longevity and well-being.

Really interesting video about living longer and maybe turning back the clock on aging. It talks about the cool science stuff happening right now. Can we actually reverse aging? The video breaks down the science behind it, like messing with cells and genes. It's pretty mind-blowing to think about how technology and medicine might help us live longer and healthier lives. The video also brings up some big questions about what this could mean for society and how we think about getting older.

It is disappointing that they barely covered limited calorie intake.
Intermittent fasting promotes autophagy.
Autophagy is well known in the medical field to reduce inflammation and increase lifespan.
It is literally a mode your body enters where it starts to recycle old damaged cells, One of the big advantages is it reduces the risk of cancer.

The vast majority of aging can be greatly slowed down by improving our DNA repair enzymes and ensuring our telomeres maintain a decent length. However, certain cells cannot replicate or regrow once you get old (nerves/muscles) thus we'd need stem cells to do that. However, there are also non-enzymatic chemical reaction byproducts that form within your cells that are irreversible - these will always cause us to "age".
Most of these improvements would require fully genetically engineered humans to actually function/work, which is quite far off at the moment.

The process of cellular reprogramming, which involves the introduction of four transcription factors known as Yamanaka factors, can reverse the epigenetic and functional age of cells, restoring their pluripotency and rejuvenation. By using this technique, it may be feasible to generate autologous bone cells that are derived from one's own somatic cells, but have a younger biological age. These cells can then be used in conjunction with 3D printing technology, which can create customised and biocompatible bone scaffolds that match the shape, size, and structure of the desired bone tissue. By transplanting these 3D printed bones into the body, it may be possible to replace damaged or diseased bones with younger and healthier ones, as well as to stimulate the endogenous bone regeneration and repair mechanisms. This may also have systemic effects on the overall health and longevity of the individual, as the transplanted cells may secrete factors that can modulate the aging process of other tissues and organs .

We all wish to live longer, genetic studies are advancing incredibly fast, this is a great opportunity for those who wish to do more things, such as adults, those who wish to make amends for their mistakes and finally those who wish to conclude something of their lives.
Undoubtedly science is making a great contribution in this field.

Exploring scientific methods like fasting, epigenetic reprogramming, and parabiosis for anti-aging raises interesting possibilities. However, some caution that pursuing rejuvenation and very long life for humans could threaten civilization. Those in power may actively work to limit average lifespans to preserve societal stability. Additionally, accessing longevity secrets may come at a significant cost, adding complexity to the ethical and practical considerations of extending human life.

You can clear senescent cells by fasting for 2 to 3 days one or twice a year. It's called autophagy or self eating. Prolonged fasting has many longevity benefits, including improving brain function.

At present we have the ability to slow aging through diet, exercise, supplements, and a few interventions such as parabiosis.
We may one day be able to stop aging, or slow it to the point where it's close to stopping.
We can reverse some of the effects and symptoms of aging, but I would be surprised if we can actually reverse aging altogether (e.g., a 60-year-old becoming 20 again). Removing all the accumulated damage to our cells or replacing damaged cells with new ones would be extremely difficult. You could do it locally, perhaps, but in the entire body? Unlikely. We should be able to reach the point where we can replace aged and damaged organs with new ones, though.
It's conceivable that in the not-too-distant future, we will see people living to 150.

But, I wonder how the issue of simple wear and tear on the body is addressed in aging, as the years go by? Not all age-related ailments are intracellular. The interaction between different cell types/masses and extra-cellular damage that accumulates over time, isn't going to be repaired by simple reversing of aging within cells(?) Just as a physical injury has to be attended to medically, at ANY age. Microinjuries within and between tissues, accumulate over time. How would reversing the age of cells address the changes in tissues incurred by such accumulating microinjuries?

Living longer could give people more time to do things that they like, many people spend their live working, they don´t have enought time to get fun, visit other countries, create memories with their families. Ageing and mortal illness are inevitable now but what if we could slow down ageing or find a effective cure for cancer, we could enjoy more the life instead of being worried about when would be the end.

Hold on for now, if you're older. Do everything you can to extend your lifespan, but even more so, the span of your health: the window is almost here. Research new supplements (GlyNAC, for instance) and established ones (magnesium, creatine, and omega 3), as well as engage in healthy lifestyle choices (eating right and exercising). Stay with us until we solve the riddle entirely.

Biological ageing is the accumulation of cellular damage. Cellular repair is down-regulated when we are in "Fight-or-Flight" and this is triggered by stress hormones and elevated insulin levels. Restoring hormonal balance by managing our stress and dietary habits allows our bodies to repair and rejuvenate. Mindfulness and breathing habits, intermittent fasting like 16-8 or even OMAD, and low carb or keto are key for a natural solution.

I’m currently in the process of writing a story about some man who was imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit… for over 40 years… since he was 18 years old. The bitter old man rejected all forms of help and support, be it massive sums of money or emotional support. He was hellbent on never accepting getting old in prison and defying the odds of time itself to regain a youthful body and exuberance at all costs… to the point that nothing else this world has to offer would’ve changed his mind; not even a promise of unlimited power over the world.

Honestly I would like better to stop having the fear of death. I hate to have panic attacks about it. About how much painful it could be, or the feeling about not sharing with my love ones ever again or experiencing anything else for the rest of eternity. How can science help me remove this evolutionary trait that makes me and my body want to live? How to make dead much less painful?

altering the gut microbiome alters the kind of Nutrional absorption and the efficacy of that absorption which can be negatively impacted by medically or dietary introduced antibiotics. Keeping old people alive longer will tax the current retirement system or will prevent upward economic mobility of young workers in the current centralized big money economic system.

Still fail to see the point to try stopping or reversing aging (treating deseases is a different thing). Dying gives life a sense of urgency and worth. On the other hand, we are in the midst of the greatest generational wealth transfer in history: from the young to the old. Can you imagine if the old (and most likely the well off old) lived to 150 or 200? This can only be possible with a deep restructuring of society, that specially the old are unwilling to go through. Btw, I'm not young.

Timely but incomplete. My work shows ageing/aging to be caused by parasitic activity within the gut microbiome. After all, very old individuals do look like they are starving to death. Parasitic bacteria are eating YOUR protein groceries (amino acids) but leaving the fatty acids behind. This why protein structure declines and you can still gain weight in the middle. Patents are pending.

As someone who is quickly approaching the age where I could die of old age or age-related diseases, I hope they don't ever "cure" old age.
We need this cycle, this replacement of old people and ideas - including myself - with new. It is how we innovate, improve, and grow as a species.
We all need to die eventually, myself included. This age reversal hope is something that perhaps we CAN do, but we OUGHT NOT to do. Let us all gracefully age and die, no matter if you are a prince or a pauper.

Do we want to? Think about it, many of us want kids, many of us want a house and many of us want to enjoy tetirement.
Slow down aging and suddenly the world is overpopulated so no housing, we work until we're 300 so no retirement, and as gov'ts try to catch up with tech, they ban pregnancies so no family.
Living forever is great on an individual level but not when mass produced.

The hard truth is that average life expectancy in the US is decreasing because of opioids and mental health issues. Try to solve those problems first before you spend too much money on longevity research for the ultrawealthy!

You yourself as a Consciousness can slow down ageing. Just get off the calendar. You were made to believe that time exists that's why your brain reacts appropriately and turns on ageing. What you believe, that will manifest!

And no mention of going VEGAN? The best way to improve health is to GO VEGAN permanently. The Trillion dollar animal agriculture industry does not want anyone to believe that because they know VEGANISM is the end of their horrible, destructive business.

Living to 120 would be great, if still relatively healthy, but . . .eventually you will STILL die.
Why not think on these words Jesus, the Lord of Life, spoke to Mary's sister Martha, at the mourning of Lazarus' death: (John11:25-26) Jesus said unto her: I am the resurrection and the life, he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live, and whosoever liveth and believeth in me, shall NEVER die. Believeth thou this"?????

In this TEDxBielBienne talk, Tobias Reichmuth explores the concept of longevity, discussing how our increasing lifespan presents both challenges and opportunities for society. He offers insights into the latest scientific and technological advancements in anti-aging research and how they could transform the way we live our lives. Overall, his talk encourages us to embrace the potential of a longer lifespan and consider the implications it has for our personal and societal well-being. Tobias Reichmuth is a Swiss entrepreneur and investor. He founded his first company while still a student. Reichmuth later spent two years traveling the world raising money for SOS Children’s Villages. He is known for his participation in the TV show “Die Höhle der Löwen” Switzerland. Managed to cover longevity escape velocity, hallmarks of ageing, technology, changes to work cycle, and ethics - all crammed in to 15 minutes! A particularly interesting slide showed that well-off people are willing to commit a third to a half of their wealth to live an extra 10 years. Hopefully that will fund enough companies to drive the price down for everyone else.

I like that they're focusing on 'healthspan' rather than 'lifespan'. I work in pharmacy and it's a constantly depressing reality that most of our medicine just stops you being technically dead well beyond the point at which you became a shambling corpse. Devoid of any memories or independence of any kind. Constantly confused by the world around you and needing meds to constantly sedate you. Being too feeble to open a door or even shamble out of it in under 10 minutes if someone else holds it open for you. But, hey, your heart is still technically beating so you're technically alive. Hooray.
Healthspan all the way. We need a paradigm shift. I don't want to turn into a shambling zombie when I'm older. If we don't get the tech done in my lifetime, definitely assisted suicide for me.

I think becoming a billionaire comes along the way when working towards leaving a legacy which is really a thought for after death. I would personally like two to three life times with quality health assured, I feel I could do a lot in this amount of time and the world would feel familiar and fair.

I would say that by curing aging, you eliminate the extraordinary cost of prolonging life in an ICU, so, it is certainly not only for the rich, since ordinary people are already paying extraordinary cost.

it seems no one is giving any credit to aubrey de grey for being at the forefront of this and popularizing it and making it a science, outlining the guidelines, doing the fundamentals...I don't know if he was the first(I thought of it before I knew he existed, but the man did the friggin work on it as well as his assistants, and even still, he probably came up with it before I was born) but the man seems to have been completely scrubbed from all the "history" videos.

I don't ever recall reading about efforts to create a one-size-fits-all life extending super pill. I was always under the impression the direction of life extension was personalized medicine based on our specific genetic makeup with targeted gene therapy like CRISPR when needed.

Almost every new technology was in the beginning only available to the rich.
But that was the thing that drew money into it's further development that later caused it to be available to everyone.
If it wasn't for the rich early adopter, they would be available to everyone at all.

Depends on if I could guarantee a healthy active longer life. I have a lot of health issues that cause severe pain. I know it will only get worse. If my pain could be handled (which I can't afford to do as most of the things doctors are suggesting that I haven't done already aren't covered by insurance & I work for a non-profit so I don't make bank) then I'd pay a ton to live longer. But how much longer? Maybe I'd only pay if I got a guaranteed extra 5+ healthy years of life.

I don't know why they showed so much Elon Musk when I think he doesn't have a lifespan extending company. (Maybe Bloomberg is trying to frame him with all the bad images lol.)
Still, pretty nice and interesting video. Thank you for the video.

One thing that should've been mentioned in the video is that we really need to develop longevity drugs because the population of the whole world is aging pretty fast and will start leveling off soon. If we don't, the already pressed healthcare and pension systems will start breaking down with more and more people aging and requiring a lot of support (something like 2/3 of healthcare expenses are spent on people over 55, and current drugs are not solving or at least addressing the core issue - damage accumulation caused by aging resulting in many kinds of chronic age-related diseases).

Don't forget that emotions affect our health as well. Increasing stress for example can affect our hormones that may negatively affect our body. Stress can be environmental and/or internal. I don't think a preventive longevity pill is going to solve that.

As long as it'll be affordable for absolutely everyone yes we should be using biotech to extend youthful life. We should be aiming to slow down aging past 25-35 and double life expectancy especially if we are serious about becoming a multiplanetary species. Death is unavoidable but aging isn't not even in nature. There are multiple creatures that don't age beyond their prime for example lobsters. Regenerative stem cell biotech & gene editing should also be a key priority.

As a heath economist I find the topic very interesting, but most of the things the people interviewed say is kinda approximative about the current health care system.. or at least they are in the way they described it, preventive medicine is not a new thing, things like screening are not always beneficial, preventive drugs like statins already exist and are not new at all in the health care system, also QALY evaluation is about increasing quality-adjusted life years, not something new.. that said the topic is very interesting and it does require some important re-thinking.. however I do not find the people describing the challenge to be prepared enough to discuss it.. I am a bit disappointed with bloomberg in this case..

I have to be honest, govt's COULD invest in this. But they are too obsessed with the "ethical ramifications" of preventing people from dying and suffering. It is OUR responsibility to vote their keisters out of office. If that doesn't happen - of course the investment will be private.

If a longevity drug isn't regulated by the FDA, then it would be considered a supplement. It should therefore be cheaper to manufacture because of lesser regulation. I believe that a supplement can be patented. Ask me how.

It's actually been shown that it will be extremely affordable to have extended life span and age reduction.
It's been found to be so profitable and affordable that companies will be willing provide the services to employees for higher productivity.
Edit: humans didn't climb down from trees, we evolved from land dwelling creatures who climbed down before us.

"it doesn't make sense to make something expensive for a handful of people when you could make it cheap for everyone." yeah, this kinda ignores the entirety of the healthcare industry that already exists... life saving drugs are already super expensive, I gurantee that a drug capable of making you biologically immortal, even if it's super cheap to make, will still be super expensive, it may be covered by insurance, MAYBE, but it'll still be expensive.

This video makes the argument that everybody will be able afford life-enhancing treatments, not only the super-rich. That's because, the argument goes, such treatments will take the form of pills or injections. But what if life-enhancement requires ultra-personalised treatments? Cancer treatment is super expensive, so why should life-enhancement not be?

they say health span instead of life span because there is know way two Age reverse the brain without losing everything we are right now so the best case is in 50 or less years it could be 30 or 15 years from now we will have the tech to make your body 21 forever but your mind will hit a stopping point around 150 or so because of braincell degradation meaning you could live for as long as it is technically possible for a human to live. there is a way around that though but its dicey and morally questionable a swarm of tiny self-driving robots print on to brain cells the memory and personality of your current self after the age reversed brain has been treated but to do this we would need tech that is well and truly beyond what we have today we are starting to see the tech with Tesla in cars the a.i. learning software for self-driving and we are starting to have tech that can 3D print functional organs take that tech put it together make it smaller than the human hair where it can travel in the blood veins and repair the problem it causes getting to the brain cells then you have a way around it but like I said it maybe beyond are life span at this time but when it happens humans could live I won't say forever but a very very very very long time we would be like the elves in Fantasy games undying unless its a Violet end. is there a chance of us living that long to see it there is but for us to have a chance to live that long to see it we first have to solve the problems around age reversing everything except for the brain and the chance we get to that point are 50/50 or so in are life time but I'm being a little pessimistic if your young if your old I'm right on the money so after that we have a chance to see the brain aging problem being solved and the grate thing is it will just be a hop skip and a jump to solving the problem around it if we are lucky they will have the method Prime and ready to go and we would have long solved the self-driving problem and have perfect 3D printers for organs witch could mean it could happen 10-25 years after they solve the problem around d aging the body with out the brain this is a chance within a chance of us living to see it the point is its not that far off from where we are now if we all work on getting the tech there and put the people in the right places to solve the problems around it and we are really lucky we could see it in are life time. finally making everything we do on this earth not a waste of are time because we would not end unless something wild and unpredictable happen like your pc back up that has all your brain cell data gets deleted and your biological self ends around the same time. o by the way your data self would just be that data it would not be alive just like a photograph is not alive

From inorganic to organic, first life even primitive life forms must be biological immortal. Death is illogical. But the curse of evolution fell upon, those iterated life-death organisms had upper hand.
Now human has the ability to program our own evolution, there is no reason not to bring immortality back.

I find that people who believe dying at any point is ok are either hypocrites or morally misguided.
I see no difference between a doctor who lets someone die of a heart attack at 30 and a scientist who can give humans 100 extra healthy years and says nope, living up to 80 is enough... Because planet earth or whatever.
We should be striving for eternity, at least morally speaking, how is that not clear as day...

80 years average, for a modern industrialized country, does not sound like a very long time. I suspect, some of the wealthier, are living to 90s, while lower class people are probably dying in their 60's or even younger.

When has technology in its entire history not used economies of scale to bring down the cost? its an insanely misguided Idea that this technology would not become commonplace in the future, as if billionares would keep it for themselves, it will happen, and as it does it will use economies of scale to become affordable to the masses and take massive pressure off of the healthcare system.

Making it also public and scaling down price over time

• You can slow down aging with zero wei...
What is the essence of being alive? This is the question that geneticist and cell biologist Paul Nurse dissects in his book What Is Life? At the core of life is the cell — an entity that can grow, divide, and reproduce.
Using yeast as a model organism, Nurse discovered a similarity in cell reproduction mechanisms between yeast and humans, hinting at a shared ancestral origin for all life. This commonality extends to genes, the units of inheritance, first recognized in pea plants by Gregor Mendel. Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection proposes that life adapts and evolves, favoring traits — and the genes that encode them — that are advantageous for survival.
The essence of life, therefore, is a complex orchestration of chemistry and information management that allows organisms to adapt and persist through inheritance.

Prof Paul Nurse is not just a great scientist, but a very humble person that elevates his status. As a Professor of Biochemistry working in India I sent him an e mail about a book on immunology that I planned to write and wanted his blessings. Within a week I got his reply wishing me the best. A Nobel Laureate could have easily ignored my letter, but his prompt reply taught me the great lesson that those truly great are very humble. Having read of his personal life made my respect towards him grow much more.May the Almighty God bless dear Paul. Regards , Dr Biju C Mathew

This is always a great topic to hear. Although I still think we underdefine life. We define life based off of how far we can perceive life. We didn't know that cells and other microorganisms existed before someone could make us perceive them. What if life exists at a smaller level than what we can currently perceive? More interestingly, what if life exists at a level greater than a level which we can perceive? A level at which our senses can't allow us to perceive it. For example, the cells in our bodies are examples of life. But then because they lack brains with ears, eyes, noses and other senses, they can't perceive our world the way we do. What if we lack the sense organs to perceive life at a scale larger than ours?

This is a wonderful summary and explanation of such a complex thing. It got me wondering something: What happens when life reaches a such a level of complex information management that it can and does start to speculate about what it is itself? We are living, and now we are asking what it is and what it means to be living. What is the purpose of existing, if there even is one? I don’t have an answer, but I think the question is well worth pondering.

face-orange-frowningPaul's exploration of life, biology, and evolution through a multidisciplinary lens is truly captivating. His research's depth, especially regarding the commonality of cell reproduction mechanisms in different species, has made significant contributions to our understanding of life. However, the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) could further accelerate his studies and broaden the insights he could glean from his work.
Artificial intelligence, with its ability to parse through vast amounts of data and discern patterns beyond human cognition, can add a layer of robustness to Paul's research. Here's how:
Data Analysis: AI could expedite the process of identifying and understanding patterns in cell reproduction across different species. It can sift through vast genomic databases at a much faster pace than humans, recognizing patterns and correlations that could provide further evidence of a shared ancestral origin for all life.
Predictive Modelling: Using machine learning algorithms, AI can generate predictive models for evolution based on Darwin's theory of natural selection. These models could offer insight into future evolutionary traits, providing a new dimension to the conversation about life and evolution.
Chemistry & Information Management: AI can play an essential role in bioinformatics and cheminformatics, helping to understand complex chemical interactions and the flow of genetic information. Deep learning algorithms can model the intricate dance of molecules, proteins and DNA, providing insights about life at a level of detail we've never seen before.
Simulation of Life Processes: AI can assist in creating sophisticated simulations of cellular processes and evolutionary pathways. These simulations can help visualize and understand the dynamic and complex processes that constitute life.
By harnessing the power of AI, Paul can supercharge his research, making it more comprehensive, faster, and potentially uncovering insights that would be difficult to achieve through traditional means. The future of biology is not just in cells and genes, but also in bits and bytes. The essence of life, indeed, is a self-contained, evolving system - and artificial intelligence can help us understand that system like never before. Paul's presentation is impressive. The ability to convey complex biological concepts in an engaging and comprehensible manner is noteworthy. This informative exploration not only expands understanding but also ignites curiosity about life's intricacies. Anticipating more insightful work in the future. Great job!

I've always thought the question of "What is consciousness and how does it work?" was by far the most existentially important question in the world. But the question of "What is life and how does it work?" has always been the runner up question to me.
Now, as I think about how life must constantly manage information in order to remain alive, I wonder if consciousness is fundamentally related to life. Not because all conscious things need to be alive as a prerequisite, but because increased levels of consciousness allows life to flourish.
And I know people would say things like "Bacteria are alive. Are you suggesting they are conscious?" And to that I could only say "Maybe, sort of?" I think consciousness and life are both on a spectrum. Viruses seem to especially skirt the official definition of life and I know I'm only half conscious at work meetings.
In reference to "The Selfish Gene" (everyone should read it) we're basically all just gene vehicles. Very complex, intelligent, and cultured, yes. However, we were constructed by genes over the course of millions of years for the sole purpose of housing them so that they can continue propagating themselves. I don't mean to anthropomorphize a bunch of chemicals (they didn't plan it all out), but perhaps there was (and is) an incomprehensibly minute level consciousness residing in the DNA of all cells.

I love all these replies and in my biological studies I love that our definitions break down pretty quickly.
Whether we talk semantically or even philosophically the question of life seems to evade our categorization due to exceptions.
Is there a case for simplifying our definition by allowing life to be a matter of existence? This would at least allow for the uncertainty in our micro and macro abilities to perceive known consciousness.

Beautiful and excellent presentation on life. Life is based on opportunities defined by the environment. Other than survival, the purpose is defined by the organism.

I appreciate your effort for delivering such a wonderful video. I really enjoyed this video and after watching this i got more excitement about the life. When answering the question of what is life , talking about life is everyone have different opinion but in this video sharing a common view point but we didn't noticed before. In this video taught the a good view point about our life and i think everything has connected to chemistry. I recommending this video do you really want to know more about perspective of life and how everything has connecting our self however its very a very good video and its didn't bore any of the area.

This was a beautiful and concise explanation of biological life. I think in a few hundred years though, our future descendants will look back on us and think how barbarian we were, in not understanding the full beauty of the divine consciousness that permeates through the universe, the elements, and life itself.

I've often wondered about what makes us alive. At the molecular level, the elements that make up living beings are no different than those of inanimate objects. For example, I imagine that you could stack up all the element that make up a human body, like the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, etc., and I think each molecule inside us would be no different from the elements in a stone or in the air. Once you go small enough, we are composed of strictly non-living things, yet we are living. What a miracle.
Thank you for a great video that helps me think about what life really is.

My view:
You can test whether an entity is “alive” by observing over time. It doesn't matter how you define or set boundaries to your entity as long as your definitions are consistent. The “alive” classification means the entity has the ability to replicate in a manner that, when observed over an appropriate time period, displays the following features:
1. The replication has both systematic and probabilistic variances
2. There are distinguishing features of the entity that change over time, in relation to some aspects of the environment
3. These changes, observed over an appropriate time period, are disconnected from changes in the environment, to at least some extent
This definition might allow us to find life in forms and places we have not hitherto imagined. It may also allow us to look for "meaning" in places that we hitherto believed were devoid of meaning.

Very nice explanation, thank you. If we start with cells, then we have excluded viruses. I guess we could say that viruses are part of life even if they are not alive. Or perhaps we could say that viruses do have cells but they acquire them by hijacking cells created by some other life.

To me, life is the idea of coming alive. All the biochemistry and information sharing is a consequence of that. And in the end, it's always about doing what's done with the greatest possible efficiency - whether it's a single atom, a molecule, a cell, or billions of cells.

This video is amazingly beautiful 😍 to better itself, a living being has to transmit the experiences to the new generations...it makes me think of Pascal Poot who lives in the south of France and has decided to leave tomatoes grow by themselves in the garrigue which is a wild quite dry place and take the seeds of the ones who survived and do it again and again and the 10th generations of these tomatoes are very resistant to the dry seasons we have in the south of France. The seeds keeps the informations of the plant that died. I've always been fascinated by seeds, when you see a tiny seed of a cottonwood and think that it's a potential huge tree , it's amazing!

I've always wondered what the defining factor would be when a tree or other plant dies vs when it's alive. You can clearly tell a vibrant green living tree apart from a barren brittle dead rotting tree. But is it possible to measure the exact moment the life force leaves the tree/plant in the way we can see when a person or animal dies?

"Life is a characteristic of organisms that distinguishes them from non-living things. It is the ability to grow, reproduce, respond to stimuli, maintain homeostasis, and perform other functions that are necessary for the survival of the organism."

I was fascinated with the idea that beings are just receptors for a vast "consciousness " ( for want of a better word). Like how radios pick out sound waves. Radio waves pass by us all the time but we only hear them thru certain receptors. Dog cells only respond or link to dog frequency wave. I don't remember where I read this idea but it made me think about things differently.

With all due respect, i believe his definition of life miss one crucial component, which is about entropy. Every living being decreases level of entropy within itself, which comes at price of increasing entropy around. This approach was introduced by Schrödinger, if I'm not mistaken. I think this a good definition for life. That’s what this question is looking for - a definition. Here’s how I personally define life: Life is that which fights its impermanence. It seems to me that to in order to exist, something must persist. Existence is persistence. Everything is impermanent, but things can attempt to fight against that for a while. Of course, entropy will win out eventually. But anything which works to persist, to survive time and change, that to me is life. Thoughts?

Life is indeed wondrous. This video is a nice snapshot of life and many of its various complexities. I especially liked the part about all those chemical reactions happening all at once, right next to each other.
A couple points worth noting:
1) At one point, Paul asserts that there "was no designer." He who makes an assertion, has the burden of proof to back up that assertion. But as it is impossible to "prove a negative", he ought not have made that assertion. For starters, no one has successfully proven the viability of the "abiogenesis" theory, (which is scarcely more than "spontaneous generation" warmed over). Ironically, he's happy to marvel at the ability of life to manage information, (which really did require a designer, although not necessarily a divine one), but won't acknowledge a designer because he doesn't know it was the Life Carrier corp.
2) As for managing information, (and the drive to find sustenance for that matter), that does appear to need a "life force", a bit of intellect let's say, to "will" it to move. Sadly, scientists, (while being well aware of their own intelligence), somehow overlook the existence of intellect in all life. They have this foolish notion that mind is a result of a brain, except slime-mold has no neurons, and yet displays intellect nonetheless. IMHO, It is the mind that tells the brain what to do, not the other way around.

Also, he could have just described life as conscious observation,
because all we have and ever will have is our perception on living,
and all this universe will ever have is our conscious observation.
Consciousness in any living thing is paramount and we create reality
as we go, not objectively observe what we believe to be existent without us.

The idea that a living thing can develop "purpose to be better adapted" (7:05), takes us out of material science and into a nebulous metaphysical area - how does a living thing embody purpose? does the simplest cell embody purpose? how does this purpose come about? what does it abide in? And: if a living thing can develop the purpose to be better adapted can it also develop other types of purposes? I'm surprised he made this statement, tbh.

I think Prof Nurse defined living in the video than defining life. Life is a Consciousness force that has a mechanism to get integrated with a living substance. Unfortunately we don't have the knowledge to understand the mechanism yet. But, we will be in next 100 years from now.

I think what life is, is any system which has the ability to learn new knowledge, remember that knowledge, apply that knowledge in decision making, repeat this process and evolve a body of knowledge upon which future decisions will be made. Of course an element of this is time, because this does not happen instantly. I mention that because sometimes people look at a system which is clearly doing this but doing it very slowly and because it is so slow they decide it is not happening.

I have seen experts agree and disagree as the cell being the threshold between living and nonliving things. Some even refuse to draw such a sharp boundary. That's where I would have appreciated a more extended discussion. For example, what criteria excludes viruses from the class of living beings? At the other end the life spectrum, all cell-based living beings are either single cell or multi cellular systems. Multicellular entities operate as a collective through their bioelectric interchanges. When two or more cells interact in this way their individual natures change, and they merge into something with a single identity according to the bioelectric commands that compel that change. This causes a collection of cells to to lose their individual identities and become a kidney. This expands to the case where organisms can be composed of disconnected parts. Social insects are examples of this. The bee hive or ant colony can be viewed as being individual living entities, themselves. This, being all derived from the cell, shows that humans are collectives, as well, comparable to the bee colony. Humans, in turn, form collectives we call cultures or societies. This is done by information exchange as happens within and among cells. That raises the question, is culture a life form?

What if living and non-living is a false dichotomy? I think maybe replacing it with in-system and off-system is better. Meaning particles are either caught in a persistent and homeostatic relationship with other particles (in-system) or not (off-system). This would at least make it so viruses are no longer a paradox.

The single cell life is so amazing
---essentially for being so much more complex than specialized (body part) cells
---and every one of those thousands of chemical machines within that single cell are driven by information
---with no explanation of how the super amount of networking information can arise out of non information
---a single amino-acid (building block) of a DNA code (information) requires that there already be over 50 other precise molecules already coded to work together to make "it"
---same goes for all of the other 50

well, the good news is that our creators became advanced and for them time slowed down to a point where distance became the issue and they required a slower (by our standard) adaptive mechanism to spread, probe, and gather information.
it is likely that we already have everything inprinted in the basic genome, and we unlock possibilities under very specific circumstances.

What I think we all need to do is tune in to Professor Jim Tour's explanation of a simple cell. The membrane of the cell has 10 to the 78 billion possible combinations and only one works. The carbohydrates on the membrane of a cell are more complex than the RNA and DNA combined. When a cell wants to transport material from one part of the cell to another part, it builds a tubular transport system where the material is delivered and then the tubular transport disappears. All of the parts of a cell have to be put together at a specific moment for the cell to function. What am I getting at? I am saying that a simple cell is one of the most complex systems imaginable and since 1952 when they started investigating how cells work, they have still not found out how the most basic parts of a cell work let alone be created. The primordial soup hypothesis is not how cells came to be is my analysis. We are composed of a trillion cells.

I have been telling my teachers and professors that the definition of life was inadequate. Something can be said to be nonliving matter, but it is only a matter of time (or chance) that it will be incorporated into living matter. A fruit fly’s existence appears to be very short to us, but our existence could be very short to the some other living being.

So, "Life" is an exchange of chemical reactions: "Life, is chemicals and molecules." Chemistry is responsible for Life. The point that I don't understand here is, how does the dead matter of chemicals become Life? We are all made up of molecules and atoms of Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Sulfur, etc. But, these chemicals are dead. How do they come to life?

What I’ve found by looking at how life relates to physics, life in itself is a colonizing chain reaction as a result entropy. Like fire or crystalline structures, it’s a type of runaway fractal of math that happens only in certain situations. Certainly not impossible by any stretch of the word, actually inevitable as you let a system as big as a universe settle over time.

Now this makes me ask again: how do these principles apply to viruses? And how might they apply to virus-like things on other worlds?
Are these necessary and sufficient conditions for something to be defined as alive, or are they only necessary but not sufficient conditions? How do we go about figuring this out?
Erwin Schrödinger also famously wrote in the 1940s a book titled “What is Life?” that we’re only starting to understand today. How does this new book “What is Life?” relate to Schrödinger’s?

The part of evolution by natural selection that was hard to wrap my mind around is that there are so many quite distinct organisms. I’d figure there would be a lot more similar organisms but with a lot of variety, like dogs for example. All the same species, but incredible variance. Why does this not happen all the time in nature.
Now, I think the reason is because dogs do not have significant, consistent, environmental pressure. It’s basically just humans deciding if they get to live and breed. If humans vanished and dogs had to exist back in nature, almost all of that variety would likely vanish very quickly and we’d be left with only a few, or less, maybe even none, species after a few hundred years.

He did not explain life, but rather how creation works.. which was a very beautiful explanation. But when it comes to the question “What is life?”, i believe the answer we’re looking for is what is the true purpose of our existence and how can we live life fully? And God (Allah) briefly answers that by saying: Life is a game and a waste of time, and everything we build here will go into vain except our good deeds , which will serve us here and in the here-after!

Everything with energy (alternatively called a life force) both active, passive or dormant is alive in this universe - as our awareness of the world increases we will start to make the 'life club' even bigger than the current 5 categories (animals, plants, fungi, protoclista, bacteria) to start including non-cellular viruses, rocks, suns, gasses, liquids, plasma, BEC and changing states. Our collective awareness hasn't quite reached that level of understanding yet. Everything is life because everything is connected; life is pretty simple when you start from the basics. We often have a very narrow view of the world, and think it should nicely fit into the artificial categories we have established, and too often, the more we look, the more we find this is not the case, and have to come up with new theories and categories. We humans love to over complicate things, especially if they are beyond our perception, tools and models. The purpose of life is then just to experience

Darwin actually stated that the reproductive organs of the various creatures communicated with their enviroment to determine the morphological changes which their offspring would then inherit. He explicitly denied random changes. Since you have assumably read Origin of the Species, you may also recall the cabbage color crossbreading experiments Darwin performed which also showed the a 1:4 ratio of colors of the offspring cabbage, but he was unable to see this as a dominate/recessive ratio of binary attributes.

Life is a combination of biological chemical and mechanical mechanisms in various forms and states that animate to perform survival of self, It's not whether you can differentiate or break down a biological form or a mechanical mechanism to define one or the other as being living. If the being, Soul, Spirit, or Thatan is devoid in a biological or a mechanical form neither will perform survival of self. This is where Spirituality determines and expresses itself as living biologically or mechanically in form.

Paul describes the characteristics of life. But what is life on itself? You may have all the components of a cel in perfect shape but they will not do anything except reacting in a harmfull way. Is the life giving power a part of the cell and what produces it? Or is it something apart from the cell that makes the cell work?

Paul Nurse was very interesting to listen to. Better than most.
If order is perfection and entropy a deterioration toward disorder, the decline must also indicate impending imperfection. Ergo... all matter, systems, and grand designs from whatever designer, are subject to the environment one derives existence from, and cannot transcend the rules of the existence it has achieved.
If life is an inevitability of the universe, the philosophical mystery becomes: is life necessary? If to be conscious is to suffer, would suffering end in the absence of consciousness?

Like user @conradmphiri I think there is more. I think P.Nurse tries to get the aspect of consciousness included in his thoughts when he says life can acquire purpose. I am inclined to say that consciousness exists in many levels, as a mean to explain why life begins from "dead matter" -- we need a distinction between matter and mind, or matter and free will. I wonder if religions of native indians, of the many religions of India, have made some thoughts on this, thoughts and ideas which show that matter is what we call the common experience, the reality we have in common, and the will, thought processes, consciousness, springs from being one in a million (millions understood as "really many").

Had me with “Living things are physically bounded entities” and then completely lost me with “the bounded entity is the chemical and informational machine”.
How is the entity that’s bounded to a physical form, itself be a physical machine?
You CANNOT explain life without getting into metaphysics. This man is brilliant and is right on everything except for two:
- Natural Selection by random mutation (math shows it’s virtually impossible - see Stephen Meyer)
- and entities being physical chemical machines (somehow still bound to other physical things?)
If it’s information, where did that information come from? Information implies language

One thought that I have is:
There exist numerous levels of complexity from the basic strings, quanta, atoms... all the way through molecules, unicelular life, multicelular life...
Maybe life is one way that materia chose to arrange itself. What could be other arrangements unknown to us that aren't neither life nor inanimate objects but something completely different? (by that I don't mean something that is either alive or not, but something completely else).

What about mules? Are they not alive, if they cannot reproduce?

No matter Who you are, no matter how many years youve spend researching in your lab on Genetics and cell biology, life is not that simple to be concisely explained in 5 points. Life is more complicated than how genes code for the specific proteins.
Everything in life is designed Not accidental.
The answer to “ What is life ?”
Can not be given by Human beings.

Alan Watts comes to mind here where he specifically talks about the short falls of human language when trying to explain natural phenomenon via the human language. Human words are abstractions or symbols for real life, they are not real life; in other words, you can't smell, touch, or pick up words because they are abstractions; 'representations' of life - not life itself. So words will always fall way-short of representing all of the complexities of the Universe. That being said, we should still try.

There was supposedly a time where a form of life decided to eat a mitochondria, and somehow it became a beneficial symbiosis. At what point did cells decide that they needed to group up and become a singular being? A Portuguese man-of-war is a siphonophore. Siphonophores are also bizzarre in terms of how they live and group up. They are different creatures forming one large system to benefit every organism in the siphonophore. Maybe they’re close to being one singular being. Maybe they’re a step or two behind the path that animals took.

I've read in the book "Wonders of Earth, Sea and Sky" edited by Edward Singleton Holden, volume XI, 1902, that
"...in the fact that living creatures always consist of the four elements, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon. Every living creature from a man to a mushroom, or even to the smallest animalcule or unicellular plant is always partly fluid, but never entirely so. Every living creature also consists in part (and that part is the most active living part) of a soft, viscid, transparent, colorless substance, termed protoplasm, which can be resolved into the four elements, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon. Besides these four elements, living organisms commonly contain sulphur, phosphorus, chlorine, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and iron..."
I think, that rule is suitable for the Earth. For other planets may exist other rules, in my opinion.

Posting this comment here because it seemed like someone may reply: What do you believe a person would think about without the faculty of language? For example, if someone were to somehow grow from birth to say, 25 years without ever hearing language or communicating with another? How would you think about the world you experience? Obviously you cannot express your thoughts in words (like you are now) so then what? I cannot be the first to think of this thought experiment.

4:19 "A better designed living thing, but without having a designer." Hard to imagine how anything can be designed without a designer, but biology teaches us that nature's design is adequate enough. What the designer need not be is the fabricated entity we're told it is that has grand designs for its creations if we only do what we're told. As if that trick wasn't transparent.

It can be useful instead to strive towards a best *description*, and over time, refine that. Definition seems to imply an end point. Creation of good desciptions is often a great start towards understanding.

Ok you observed how life on this planet works, when it is made of cells. What about possible life that works in a different way? I think it is life when it operates on it's own behalf. For example, the entire universe and its chemical reactions (which create the sub-form of life that we as cell organisms are) can also be seen as a form of life. But this was not even considered by what the video says, because it only observed cell organisms and then tried to define what life is by this limited observation.

Alfred Nobel was a villain. He invented dynamite working as a chemist. His invention killed so many people. He was portrayed in the media as death itself. Alfred didn’t like being responsible for his invention. He was however rich and so he began a campaign to green wash himself . He came up with his prize. The prize obscured the villain. If you have ever noticed the prize seems to go to the wrong person, it actually is the right person, a villain who needs a public relations makeover. It’s tradition.

How about this? This is my distilation of Terrence Deacon's ideas. A living entity is 1) A product of its own organization. and 2) It actively works to achieve or maintain far from (thermodynamic) equillibrium dynamics. An entity that's organized to use external forces to fix or maintain its organization, but is a product of its own organization is an entity for which such concepts as function and purposeful dynamics is already meaningful, but it isn't yet alive, since it only constrains external forces for its benefit, but doesn't actively persue its own goals (only passively). Such an entity can be subject of natural selection and evolution; it may develop living variants in the future, but isn't alive. Viruses do this.

He lost me at "a design without a designer".
Those cells he talked about are each one as complicated as a megalopolis, with every system seen in such cities, such as energy production, food supply, communication systems, sanitation reproduction and many many others. All of these systems are dependent on one another. The obvious design is overwhelming.
The simplest self-replicating cell must have most of these systems in place to live, grow and reproduce.
To say it happened piecemeal and gradually is to ignore ridiculously insurmountable odds of it happening by random chemical accidents all at the same time and same place.
The simplest self-replicating cell is irreducibly complex. Take away any system, and the whole thing dies. It does not pick up where it went wrong and fix a few mistakes and continue. It is blind, has no memory or agenda. it must start over again, against hyper-astronomical odds just to make one protein. Then those have to join others that have been waiting around for thousands of years in an environment hostile to such chemicals.
It requires religious zeal to believe that first cell could have happened by accident.
And, of course, without that, the whole Darwinian house of cards crashes down.

Paul is brilliant, no doubt. I'd like to know what his definition is of "natural selection" and ask him where does all the intelligence that exists in all the realms of biochemistry come from? How is it that by chance alone, somehow we have evolved from one celled organisms to sentient human beings? Is the "natural selection process" imbued with intelligence that can coordinate billions of living cells that make up our complex body systems? What is that mechanism? He says everything looks designed. then why can't he just say it is designed by some cosmic designer?

The scientific method is (currently) our best means of understanding the world within and around us. The nature of that method allows and encourages incredible levels of imagination and exploration. The wonder of discovery allows for an equal measures of awe of and appreciation for the natural world, the divine need not be given credit for it until evidence of that is presented.

I'm an atheist - through and through - but I do find it wondrous that life processes information. If there is anything else - as in if we are in a simulation and there is a higher reality in which our simulation is hosted - then I think the information encoding central to life is our most likely evidence.

Although this video encompasses the very basics of life in a philosophical way. I would like to explain it in Quantum Level.
The same Genes and chromosomes giving life a shape and purpose are composed of Atoms, electrons, protons and neutrons which are made from Quarks and other fundamental particles. All these micro structures are in motion/vibration and bound with one another through opposing charges and energies. Same like you said; their purpose of motion? “To adopt to their environment and get better overtime”
We humans being the most advanced form of these ultramicro structures are destined to follow the same purpose, to become better, healthier and live longer.
Quantum particles are our ultimate forefathers.

Some of the most profound epiphanies can be experienced simply by acknowledging what might seem obvious excluding the fact you are accustomed to it or the knowledge of it. DNA would be a perfect example. Every living thing on the only inhabitable planet within the known universe builds itself utilizing an incredibly complex set of molecular instructions commonly known as DNA. Just remarkable and only one facet in the equation. In terms of evolution, it happens in more ways than one (Natural selection) where some DNA could be lost or retained due to a great number of factors but over time it begins to favor natural selection as a primary driver.
DNA is constantly trying new things and by the means of natural selection and other factors play a direct role in determining if that DNA will carry on evolution. In the short term, successful evolution can be complicated but over the long term it equates to natural selection as the absolute fittest for the environment survive.

Okay, this may or may not cause some controversy:
Is every living entity/thing at its core really just a chemical MACHINE? What about the "hard problem" then, the problem of consciousness and how its coming into existence? Is consciousness really just a byproduct of a chemical/biological machine that has reached a certain level of complexity? What if it was the other way around and consciousness was fundamental? Not just to life but to any "formation" of atoms/molecules? That somehow consciousness (not as complex thought, but as a simple way to EXPERIENCE existence) is starting point of everything? And if we could accept this as a new paradigm, wouldn't it open up a whole new way to think about evolution? What if there was a "driver" behind every living thing? Not just spontaneous gene mutation, natural selection etc, but a consciousness that "feels" its way into the world? And by doing so, is able to–at some basic level at least–adjust its organizational from to the environment around? Wouldn't this way of looking at the world solve a lot of problems...?

While I support the idea of evolution by natural selection, I don't think you can assume the absence of a designer. It could very well be, that is how the designer arrives at the final product. For example, you wouldn't attempt to teach an infant cellular biology ... you would introduce simple concepts, gradually building on them until you end up with a white-haired man with an excellent grasp of the subject. Taken together with his conclusion, I went from being interested in purchasing his book to a hard-pass in 7:36.

Defining life is to be looked at empirically, everything is designed to follow some order. A tiny cell, insects, plants, animals, planets , stars, galaxies, universe follows underline rule to be in the order, rather the purpose to get better.. It's like 2nd law of thermodynamics, the entropy of a system increases over time, everything seems to defying that entropy in itself..

to answer the question of what is life? we need to think of these 5 ideas of biology.
1. The cell
2. The gene
3. Evolution by natural selection
4. Chemistry
5. Information
The core principles of life are bounded , physical, chemical, and informational bonded entities with hereditary and variable (mutations) systems that are determine by natural selection providing differen levels of instinct or intelligence, and in humans a cognitive mind desing as well as a consiousnes to give us purpose.

4:13 That's not really a better design without a designer. Yes, if by "designer" you mean a low level engineer who uses existing things and rules, and arranges them to actualise an idea, then you can say natural selection means there is no "designer". But you can think of natural selection, or any other most fundamental rule of physics and biology as something that has to be designed itself.

In my humble opinion, unless we address the chicken versus egg questions (what came first) then we will always be biased in our answers, by coming up with assumptions that feed our pet hypotheses . As one studies science deeper and deeper, you always find more and more chicken-egg questions....what came first DNA or the the Protein polymerase enzymes, etc. Whenever you try to answer these chicken-egg questions you have 2 choices: come up with "your" favorite pet theory with no or poor experimental data to prove it Or you accept the innermost voice within you that says they were "both" made at the "same time" by God. I do not understand the extreme hatred & mockery of scientists like me, to the point that I have to go by an alias name so you won't crucify me...and keep my job.

One system that is automatically evolving without any designer is the most crucial part of the 5 principles of Life. Just imagine, it's been naturally selected and evolving without any control mechanism we can determine as controller/designer. So, how billions of living lives are naturally selectively evolving as per its requirement..!! WHICH most fascinating part I found..and that's where it comes..the ALMIGHTY/GOD varied over religious beliefs. But Almighty is the crucial designer who left no dent of its legacy.

If we use the formula that anything that has capabilities of reacting and responding according is life. Everything ,including, particles, waves, atoms, energies forces are all life /living only. This is vedic wisdom's. So formula is most important for rationale.

My search must continue for a compelling thought on how life sprang from non-living matter and was invested with the will to survive. Why does life have a preference for continuing to live? Why was the genesis life form not indifferent to the prospect of returning to a non-living state? For me, these are the fundamental how and why questions which underlie biology.

Maybe another way of looking at what life is to look at how it started, and why it started. Where was the point in time when complex structures of molecules obtained an ability to sustain, preserve and then inherit what they had become? As we know, sun-light had a major role in this. And maybe the fact that existence on this planet is cyclic, for example sunlight is only available for periods of time a day. In this sense, life is a way of remembering what light is. Life is knowledge. And this knowledge has developed a conscious mind, the human being, in the effort of getting better. As a side effect, we have lost connection with the very core of our existence, the knowledge of what we are, what life is. But it also gave us the ability to find the way back.

There is only 1 principle, life has to colonize space (and time !) in order to exist. Therefore Nietzsche spoke about the "will to power", and that's not wrong, on the ontological level, not on the moral level. The will to power, is identical in finality, to the principle above.

3:49 Natural Selection can only start when there is a mutating replicator and not before! It all starts with Software dreaming up the software and then producing the hardware to harness the software! Human engineers do this all the time! Also, humans in general, do this all the time: You think of an idea to accomplish something and then you lay out the steps of how you might accomplish it, then you make concrete (hardware) entities to harness the steps (code)!

Great video on the definition of life. There is,however ,challenge from some field science and spirituality about Darwin's theory of natural selection. Darwin's natural selection of evolution is based on changes in the material world where as metaphysics/spirituality says the evolution is based on changes in the psychic bodies of creatures as it cycles between material/3rd dimension and higher dimension to give rise to new variants of species. The evolution is,therefore, driven by changes in the psychic bodies and based on material circumstances on earth as a starting point. The psychic body is connected to electromagnetic energy structures in cosmic dimensions.

I would say a sixth element is in order--the dialectical relationship between the individual organism and the species from which it emerges through conjugation, and with which it must re-conjugate for the success of either the species' germ-line (genotype) or the individual's lineage (phenotype). It may seem like merely a restatement of selection of the best-adapted but it involves much more than a simple result--to obtain any result an organism must generate or participate in sexuality, abide by sexual dimorphism, experiment with parenting, social behaviors, defense of territory and reproductive strategies. Kids don't raise themselves if complex intelligence, neotenous development and social or parental obligations are factors, which for most synapsids long have been.

It is very regrettable that viruses are not included as living entities in this definition of life since they replicate accurately by a templating mechanism and are subject to molecular natural selection. Furthermore their collective biomass is estmated at 0.2 Gigatonnes of carbon. It is all spelled out in a book " From Chemistry to Life on Earth " to be released soon by Austin Macauley Publishers offering a molecular natural selection formula and a thorough scenario of life's origin and evolution up to the protozoa.

What is Life?
- Living things are bounded physical entities.
- These bounded entities consist of chemical and informational processes.
- The chemical and informational processes in the bounded entities have a hereditary mechanism that
determines how these two processes work and, as well, they have the property of variability which
enables the whole thing to evolve by natural selection.

I thought this was going to be a legitimate exploration of how to define life. "Life" doesn't necessarily require a cell; e.g., if we end up creating silicon life in the depths of a CPU. It will be based on bits and bytes, not DNA. Though similar in function, they are different in nature. If it reproduces, there won't be speciation, but there might be adaptation. (I guess it depends on how we program it.) Chemistry? Maybe. Information. Definitely. Go back to the drawing board, Mr. Nurse.

Excellent video. And I agree with his definition of life. I don’t agree with his comment as it relates to Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection. Charles Darwin mentioned “evolution” generically as it related to one species “evolving” into another species (Ex: Bird A producing a beneficial physical variance which would eventually produce a new species; Bird B, BUT which was still very much a Bird never did he allude to anything evolving into a new Genus). Charles Darwin did not explicitly state or allude to one genus evolving into a completely new genus as part of natural selection in his book On the Origin of Species. That misnomer is a 20th century misapplication based on, a hate for religious hypocrisy, bias and research funding. All of which created a predictable game of “telephone”.

I feel like we don’t have a great definition of life, but no matter what we know what life is when we see it. It’s silly to say that a virus is not alive. It clearly is. The only thing that is perplexing is whether or not a protein is alive. Or may be a protein folding enzyme. The enzyme itself is serving a purpose. It’s a tailor-made robot. It’s completing a task that is very necessary in our body. Yeah it doesn’t have any awareness. But I don’t know. Maybe it does have some kind of life. Maybe absolutely everything has a consciousness and there are just degrees of it. The whole universe being the sum of all consciousness.

The designer is the environments of a planet, astroid, or planet tesimal and is elements contained, for practically, the universe.
He mentions compartments having memebrains to make up a cell, an inside and an outside, the first necessary formation, a bubble, that separates an inner environment from an outter environment, or chemistry inside from the chemistry outside, the outside chemistry affecting the chemistry of the inside, the all important first membrane bubble.
Chemistry, molecules, elements of, atoms, photons, protons, neutrons, electrons, particle physics, quantum fields, all strangely arranged to bring forth Life and consciousness ... Einstine said "spooky action at a distance" for entangled particles, the same quote can be applied to Life.

And then, critically, that informational chemical machine in a bounded entity has a hereditary system that determines how it works, a system which has variability and therefore the whole thing can evolve by natural selection. And that means the living thing can acquire purpose, purpose to be better adapted in the life stage it finds itself. And so we can evolve living things from one type into another. And for me that bounds everything together that emphasizes the core principles underlying life."

Perhaps the best definition of life is the craving for complexity . A strange impulse in the universe that defies the second law of thermodynamics and stives for complexity through the peculiar behaviour of emerging properties. From the big bang, to stars to planets to plankton, bacteria, reptiles, mammals, homo sapiens, to us and tomorrow to AI… a continuos path of growth in complexity and defying of entropy in a relentless purpose for improvement. A mystery in the makings.

The five mentioned here all need to be reducted to principles, since at least cell, chemistry, information and evolution are concepts of the mind, based on perceptions and values. I think there are eight dimensions or principles, which relate to principle ways of how life manifests, not what builds it. It is way more efficient to perceive effects than causes. We don't even know if causes are true.

"Better designed thing without a designer" is quite a jump lol there's still the question of the design of the earth. The design of oxygen atmosphere space, heat, cold, etc. All these goldilocks zones which predate any form of life/genes which he's currently talking about. Not saying that saying it's a designer isn't a jump either. In fact it'd be a very illogical jump to make in assuming there is a designer, just pointing out he's really making his own type of jump.

Human ancestry goes back 4 billion years to a single nucleotide; however, we are reluctant to call a single nucleotide alive because space rocks have nucleotides, so the entire Universe would be alive. But, a single nucleotide can polymerize & reproduce with variation, subject to natural selection, so in a sense, a single nucleotide is alive.

Great video, but I'm going to be nit-picky and point out that roly-polies (ie. pillbugs, woodlice) are not insects, they are terrestrial crustaceans.

The video a description of what living being does, not the difference between what is living and what is not, we all can tell the difference, it's just that the question is "why" is it alive? You can have two sets of molecules both compromise the body of fly for example but one fly is dead the other is alive, Why? They're the same molecules why is one dead and the other living.

This is what Allah says in Quran, Surah Fuṣṣilat: verse 53;
(We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their own selves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Qur’ân) is the truth. Is it not sufficient in regard to your Lord that He is a Witness over all things?

Doesn't consciousness have anything to do with life? To the ancients it would have felt like a tree were just as dead as a rock. Imagine you were a tree, but had no consciousness. That would mean you wouldn't be there to notice you tree-lile existance. To me it just feels like being conscious is the most profound part of being alive, if not even the only criteria for it 🤔

Loved this, but…You lost me on 3. “A better designed living thing but without having a designer.” The more reasonable conclusion for me is design came from a designer. Especially after the description of how fantastic 4 (the chemistry) is.

The information level of life is the area that homeopathy works and acts. It is the non-chemical, non-mechanistic level of life that is yet to be fully understood by science. It is interesting that a human body loses 4 pounds in the moments of death before decay starts. What was lost? Where did it go? What was it doing that it was there during life and yet not there when life stopped. It can't be accounted for as matter so it must be something else and maybe that something else is what uses the 'information' to turn energy into a solid form.

You stated some of the components of life, but you don't know what life is. If you knew life you could for example extend it, revive it, stop aging, ...etc. Life is more than chemical, biological and reproduction it's a rather a manifestation of something out of human perception. Touch, feel, sight, thought, taste, and reproduction are merly interfaces to exprience some of what life is.

And not anywhere in one of these five principles is the "One Life" itself - suggests that life is a byproduct and an emergent property of interacting complex systems. Although there are some notable dissimilarities, this biological perception of the world is very similar to the Buddhist notion of the five Khandas. The Khandas are considered to be the basic components that constitute a sentient being and are used to deconstruct the illusion of a separate, enduring self. The five Khandas is a model for understanding the nature of existence and the nature of suffering. The biological explanation of life does not try to answer the question of suffering, nor to define "self", but it similarly to the five Khandas, biology tries to answer the question of what a living, sentient being is. Furthermore, the biological model of life uses empirical study of the outer world, and the buddhist notion of the five khandas (almost) uses an empirical method (meditation) to study the phenomenology of the inner world. Both arrive to the conclusion of "[...] byproduct and an emergent property of interacting complex systems".

Stab a human or burn that human, that human can die easily. But stab a tree or burn it, it still can live. Plant always try to live, even if the condition is hard, it will try to survive or die trying.

The between is when the absolute dead random becomes to some certain degree pattern and the patterns grows and the more pattern there more creature evolves more life like eventually if enough it can obtain awareness. Now that is life debunked by my science writing!

Life is a local reversal of energy.
The universe begins with an imperfectly uniform distribution of matter.
The matter has gravitational potential energy.
Slight imbalances mean matter coalesces, creating stars that express the potential energy. Energy spreads, increasing entropy.
Just as a watermill converts downhill flow of a river into valuable grinding of grain, some of that stellar energy is captured by anti-entropic replication processes.
Those processes engage in self-reflection.

Well, he did not answer the question what is life. He listed some attributes and aspects that may guide one who wants to identify whether something is alive or not. But his question belongs to the set of questions that science does not bother to answer, because they are not answerable in the realm of science anyway. Still, science goes on with its business without trying to answer such fundamental questions. Another example, what is space? Physics does not care about answering it, but do a lot of work with it. The recognition that some questions cannot be scientifically answered is not a failure.
As we land in other places in the cosmos, we use identifiers of life to try to recognize whether there is any form of life, with the attributes we know. So, we look for some sort of “unit” that may distinguish itself from its surroundings, and show some sort of functions we may recognize as “taking something from the environment” for its own apparent “needs”. We will expect those needs are related to preservation, growth and reproduction, in whatever fashion it may come about. Those will be the basics: unit, distinction from environment, absorption of something from the environment for preservation as unit, as well as possibly growth and reproduction. From there, it may get more complicate with attributes that are relevant but not essential, like perception, communication, sociability, will and aim. But the creature may show attributes we have never noticed anywhere, never mind associate with life. Let’s see :))

Life is doing good and searching to who created everything including humans starting from atoms to cells to nature human animals planets skies . How could all of this exist and works in automation with no error. The more we know the more we know we don't know so the creator must be a one than no one is like him a unique unlimited potential and power . Search for the truth in your self

Evolution is simply a mechanism created by a superior being the question is whether we are evolving to be one with this being and does this redefine different life hierarchies of life. Life in it's primordial state is not even aware it is alive as life evolved the physical becomes less important and intelligent information defines life. We are at the beginning of a new state of evolutionary existence
