I told my dad that they were going to catch the booster and he didn’t believe me. I sent the booster catch to him and he said “is that for real?”

The fact that they can so accurately land them not only with the remarkable catch but the fact they had a camera in the exact spot the ship would land

The flames at the side of the booster are vents from the cryogenic methane tank, as the booster heats up the liquid gas boils off and is vented overboard to maintain the correct pressure in the tank. The engines set fire to this vent that is what you are seeing.

I heard that it takes something like 3 orbits for the Starship to be realigned for landing at the tower. So there'd be at least a couple hours between a booster landing on the tower to the ship coming back. Still not enough time currently, but I think that's the idea. They'd move the booster then land the ship.

loving the excitment youhave for this. they swing the booster out of the way and put it in one of the pads. by the time the payload part has done its job the booster will be off the pad.

Super Heavy is somewhere around 220 tons dry without the hot stage ring, and probably had 20-30 tons of propellant left in the tanks, so it definitely was not 500 tons. Also, when the booster reaches it's highest boostback velocity at about 26 kilometers altitude, it was doing 4400 km/h, which is a little over Mach 4 at that altitude. Then, when the engines fire to cancel out the booster's energy for the catch, it's doing Mach 1, and decelerates all the way down to 2 km/h by the time the chopsticks make contact.

This a huge step forward allowing engineers to review data, examine components, control actuators and heat tabs epoxied in places the size of a quarter. Designed to melt at a known rate at a predictable temperature range. This complex catch is a further step to carry more weight into space at a cheaper cost. Reusable rockets without tons of heat shield and certain cooling systems are not used. Lower total weight carried at 17,500 MPH to escape the earths atmosphere with 3 times the power. Amazing!

Looks like the time spent trying to convince using glide ratio re-entry wasn't wasted.
They'll need more glide for loaded ships coming in, maybe need more wing surface, especially returning from Mars.
But it stayed in pretty good condition, and they know what to do now... Also your description tells me you understood the points in the writs...

They still have a lot of work to do to get to full reusability, like put out that fire, don't fry the engines, buckle the side of the booster, its tanks or burn all the important bits in the chines. The heat shield needs a LOT of work, but this was a really HUGE step forward. Well done SpaceX.

If they try to catch the Star Ship as well, it won't be immediately after catching the booster. Star Ship will be in orbit first, and then it will come back much later on a later orbit. There will be lots of time to remove the booster first. Maybe even days.

I knew that "2001: A Space Odyssey" was prophesy. I watched the Voyager's begin their unbelievable journey (NASA could actually build s..tuff then). Elon Musk is bringing little boys and girls dreams and the magic back to space. I may be old now, but I still cherish those dreams.

For those that may not know because he actually asked the question... The way it would work is as follow: When they catch the booster they will move it over to and set it back into the launch mount. That way by the time the actual Starship returns from whatever it is doing up there the tower and arms are back into position waiting to catch the ship.

just a reference - 15,000 KM/h is Mach 12.14. ... 25,000 KM/h is roughly Mach 20.24.
impeccable engineering.
Also @7:00-7:03 you can see something fall off the starship and land on the booster body causing significant sparking - pretty sure those were chunks of the starship's heat shield that rattled loose and fell off during max-Q - if more than a few fall off, that could lead to severe damage on re-entry leading to the subsequent 'boom'

in order to catch the booster AND the ship, they will likely leave the starship in orbit long enough to remove the booster from the tower and reset it. if the tower is damaged at all, they need a 2nd tower.

Remember when Elon said- “building an awesome electric car is hard, but building a factory that builds electric cars is incredibly difficult. He’s taken all he learned about manufacturing (which is an insane amount of knowledge and wisdom), and applied it to manufacturing Space Flight. This milestone today is big, really big, but his factory which churns out spaceships bigger and more powerful than Saturn 5 rockets, this is beyond words cutting edge what humanity can do and so much better than the competition. Wow. Just WOW!

It wasnt, right?

This is incredible. For a long time, I was deathly afraid that I would not live to see us get to the moon and Mars, but watching Elon and Spacex taking each step, closer and closer to reaching those "cosmic" goals...It's like finally watching all my childhood science fiction dreams come true right before my eyes. I'm so glad God has allowed me to live long enough to witness this. I just hope he allows me to be around for our journey to Mars. Then, I'll rest easier knowing humanity will have a real shot at beating the odds and escaping extinction.

Catches 500 tonnes, maybe, moving at 3 times the speed of sound, not even close, when it was about 5000 mtrs up, yes, but the booster had slowed to a hover when they caught it, an impressive feat to say the least but the sensationalism in your title is not warranted.

That's the most ludicrous title. Nobody caught 500 tonnes at 3x speed of sound, that would've been the biggest RUD to date. Moving at most 5 kph at catch, and approx 275 metric tonnes dry weight. 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡 <- this channel

VERY DUMB video title. NO, they did NOT “catch a 500 ton booster moving at Mach 3”. They caught a “(maybe 500 ton booster) which had slowed down from (maybe Mach 3) to a very controlled 3 mph or so” (my guess).
