S Jorge S Jorge 5 months ago On a doctor’s visit, just after I turned 50, I was sent for blood tests - my first ever. The doc. told me I had familial hypercholesterolemia - this, without one question about my family - slapped a box of Lipitor on the desk and told me I had to take them for the rest of my life. I gave her the look and she said, ‘Oh well, if you want to drop dead in the street……’ Asked about the side effects I was told some joint pain and muscle weakness. I walked out thinking, the heart’s a muscle; went home and did my own research on the internet. I found Dr. Uffe Ravenskov and his Cholesterol Myths. Read his research, and all the associated links, and never took a single pill. I’m now 75 and have no heart problems, and no memory problems either. I was also browbeaten on subsequent visits to the doctor, to get me on statins, until I told them that if they kept it up I wouldn’t go anymore. Have you noticed how drug companies frequently move the goal posts too, to encompass a wider population. I question everything! 440 Reply 26 replies Peter Bougoure Peter Bougoure 1 year ago I was certainly heading towards dementia until I realised that my statin use could be causing memory loss. Within 3 weeks of not taking it, my short term memory returned, so I haven't taken it since. Unfortunately, my doctor doesn't know that I stopped taking it and is concerned about my cholesterol levels, until I convinced him to check my hdl / ldl ratio on the next test. This he agreed to. I have been on a mostly carnivore diet since March this year and have lost over 40kg and put my type 2 diabetes into remission. I couldn't be happier - just wish my doctor would get on board! 467 Reply 64 replies Ma Barkers Organized Chaos Ma Barkers Organized Chaos 5 months ago Between my muscle deterioration, severe cramping and brain drain, I'm done arguing with doctors about statins. What good is a couple of days of life when it's not worth living and I can't remember it. Increasing my activity level (which I couldn't do on statins) and dietary changes have had a much more profound positive change to my life. 157 Reply 13 replies Johan Ferreira Johan Ferreira 8 months ago (edited) I used statins for 10 years, muscle pains grew progressively worse, my muscles weakened, my eyesight worsened seriously, I developed diabetes, my ancles swelled up and I started having memory loss during those 10 years. I stopped taking it 3 weeks ago, there are already improvements in my muscle pains and eyesight. 141 Reply 4 replies haruspex54 haruspex54 6 months ago (edited) Thank you, thank you, thank you for this succinct, BRILLIANT overview! I'm a 68 year old female (USA). Just a couple days ago I had an annual physical, something I would probably never do if I didn't "need" to have my slightly elevated BP managed. Once again, I was harassed and gaslighted by my PCP to get aboard the statin Titanic. There was no discussion of the risks and benefits to these drugs, just a notepad at the ready for the doctor to write a prescription. I kept saying no, but the coercion attempts were strong, and he ended up telling me that according to the calculator they use for CVD risk, I had a 10% chance of an event OR DEATH in the next 10 years. Needless to say, I couldn't wait to get out of the examination room. This happens annually, and it seems every doctor I've been to adheres to the same coercive tactics. My total cholesterol is generally on the low end of the 200s (about 214) and has been since I was in my 30s. I am at a good weight for my height, I'm otherwise healthy, I eat nourishing food and I do long hikes and run/walks through my neighborhood as well as bike. I don't smoke, nor do I have any cardiac issues. Women in my family generally live well into their late 80s. My HDL is usually around 70, Triglycerides are consistently at 90. My HDL to Total Cholesterol ratio is around 3 (I guess nobody uses these anymore to calculate risk). I'm about to give up on the medical industrial complex altogether, as I would like to stay well, feel good and be happy. And now she wants to see me every six months instead of a year. Why??? Thanks for "listening." 128 Reply 19 replies vtgirl1969 vtgirl1969 5 months ago (edited) Thank you so much for this info!!! I've been on statins for 25 years. At 71, after having a CAC with a score of 20, I've decided to go off them. My LDL was 196 and HDL 77. Triglycerides were in normal range. I'm healthy, thin, and exercise daily. Apparently didn't take any of that into account because he yelled at me for stopping the drugs and said I shouldn't listen to these other doctors! Ugh. Such a battle! 78 Reply Cheryl Davis Cheryl Davis 11 months ago This is a Doctor whom I would love to be my doctor. Giving the truth and not in someone’s pocket! I experienced terrible side effects from statins and it’s only when I began to feel better after forgetting to refill the prescription that I started really researching statins (which I should have done before ever taking the first pill). That research led me to this video which led me to low carb/keto in April 2022. 4 months in, I’m down 36lbs with significant improvements in HDL, triglycerides, and total cholesterol. Thank you, from central Virginia in the USA, and from the bottom of my heart. 72 Reply 4 replies mike libbey mike libbey 1 year ago Very well explained. When statins first came out the physician desk reference booklet stated it increased the risk of liver cancer in rats. This statement was then withdrawn from this book. I've seen so many problems with statin in my patients but doctors keep pushing them. 163 Reply 2 replies Kaye Szymanski Kaye Szymanski 1 year ago Thanks Dr. Paul! Sharing this to social media. My mother in law was prescribed 2 statins, which she dutifully took. Her brain went to mush 😢 I saw it happen before my eyes. She had other symptoms too, muscle pain, diabetes, she would forget to eat. Wasted away to 100 pounds before she died in 2016. I have told my primary doctor that I will never take a statin. She knows now not to bring it up during our visits. My LDL went from 95 five years ago to 145 this year. I’m very happy 😃 Brain needs cholesterol to function properly. Following keto and carnivore woe for 3.5 years. 129 Reply 11 replies Melanie J. Roberts Melanie J. I suspected I had high insulin levels, and by working through this puzzle piece by piece, and largely thanks to Dr. Mason here, I have figured out that I really need to eat low carb. Long story long, the first thing this doctor did was try to slap me with a statin. I absolutely refused because I have long known the science behind statins - but so many take these pills without question. I said no, i would change my diet, she was very condescending and said if I didn’t I would die…her words. Well, I’m 72 now, my current dr says I’m in great health and no need for statins. I take NO prescriptions, but I do take vitamins and try to eat healthy (meat, fish, seasonal Vegas and fruits) walk daily and lift weights. I always do my research and I’m lucky I have finally found a dr who isn’t prescription happy. I think it’s important to research anything a dr wants to give and try to change your diet first. Statins artificially prevent the production of cholesterol, which in the long term causes the loss of myeline, shorting out our neurons; in other words, statins INDUCE multiple sclerosis (MS) conditions. Cholesterol is also the prime substance from which we make pregnenolone, from which we make progesterone, from which we make testosterone, from which we make estrogen ... Statins interfere with the production of cholesterol, and therefore with the production of all steroidal hormones, leading to a need for hormone replacement therapies ... if we are lucky enough to get the condition diagnosed. Another use of cholesterol is as a putty to repair arterial lesions. The lesions are often caused by calcification of arterial walls, which results from lack of vitamin K and/or lack of acidity in the diet (some stupid people believe we need to consume more alkaline, like a religion), the excess calcium there causing the arteries to become hard and brittle. And if we are older than middle age, we may fail to repair the arterial cracks due to lack of vitamin C and the amino-acid lysine, both of which we know from evolution are hard to get in the needed high amounts for the production of collagen. So, as a last resort, we use cholesterol to patch the arterial cracks; which was noted but incorrectly assessed to mean that cholesterol was the CAUSE of the cracks, when in fact it is there to patch them. The intentionality of all the cholesterol deceit in the medical literature is best attested by the use of such terms as "HDL cholesterol" and "LDL cholesterol", both being contradictory terms. HDL and LDL stand for "high density-" and "low density-LIPOPROTEINS". Lipoproteins are a type of proteins. Proteins are not fats. Cholesterol is a fat; therefore is not a protein. Therefore, neither HDL nor LDL are any such thing as a "type of cholesterol". HDL and LDL are lipoproteins, which are HUGE compared to the size of a cholesterol molecule. They are proteins that are thousands of amino-acid units long, curl into ball shaped wicker-basket-like meshes, with a lipid-friendly side to the inside, and water-soluble to the outside. Their purpose is to transport fats in the blood. Many kinds of fat. Sometimes they carry cholesterol; sometimes they carry triglycerides; sometimes they carry vitamin E. You have no way to know what kind of fat they carry at any moment without opening them up; and they are too small to use tweezers. Assuming that they are always carrying cholesterol is definitely wrong, absurd, and unscientific. And the difference between HDL and LDL is their size. LDL is about half the size of HDL; HDL can carry up to just over 1000 molecules of cholesterol. But they could be carrying any other fat. And even if we could assume HDL and LDL are carrying cholesterol, the cholesterol they carry is the same; there aren't multiple "types of cholesterol". It is as if we were to say that toilet paper in 30-roll bags is "GOOD toilet paper", but toilet paper in 12-roll bags is "BAD toilet paper. It is the height of absurdity. Liked and subscribed. 79 Reply 5 replies Ken Cory Ken Cory 1 year ago I agree with everything Dr. Mason has to say. I've only seen him for less than a year because of high blood pressure. I'm not the biggest guy in the world, but I do have quite a bit of muscle on me. So after some lab tests he threw me on some blood pressure medication which I understand totally... But told me that my blood pressure was high because I had too much muscle. Explained it as each cell needed to grow new blood vessels and if you have a lot of muscle on your body then you have a lot more blood vessels so that would make my blood pressure go up naturally. Suggestion for curing my blood pressure problems was to not lift weights and lose some muscle tone and that should take care of the problem. He was also teetering on the edge of trying to put me on a statin which I completely told him no. Addressing my diet he only said I should mix in some more greens because I ate hardly any. Totally switched over to the carnivore diet for a month now and I feel great. I am NOT a violent or impulsive person, I have never once had such an impulse in my life! After refusing to smash my electronics, I then felt like I wanted to go into my bedroom, grab my cat, and repeatedly rip the fur from her body. And I mean I WANTED to do it, it took all my willpower to not do this. I literally spent the next two hours sitting completely still on my couch. My most recent comprehensive blood test showed amazingly high cholesterol levels, particularly our old friend LDL. They're up from about 10 years ago, when they were already high (but I think that was before the recommended level was reduced, so they weren't such a huge red flag). On the plus side, all the other indicators were good, my weight is good and my blood pressure is good. So it's possible I may have familial hypercholesterolaemia. The literature suggests this is associated with increased risks of atherosclerosis and heart attack, so I can see how doctors might be tempted to prescribe statins. Obviously, I'm not too keen but I may find my options being somewhat limited. 3 Reply 2 replies Psalm1Tree Psalm1Tree 4 months ago (edited) Some years back, I went to a doctor for the first time, and I was seen to have very slightly high blood pressure. She immediately reached for her prescription pad to give me some statins, which I refused. Some weeks later, I happened to go to her husband, who is also a doctor. I told him about how his wife had tried to get me to get on statins for blood pressure. He gaslighted me. he said that she didn’t do that and that statins were not given for blood pressure. I wish I had said, “ I’m sorry, but I don’t remember seeing you there in her office.” I never saw either one of them again. And I never will. I have had one bad experience after another with doctors and their so-called helpful prescriptions. And I have had wonderful experiences over and over with turning to natural health helps as can usually be found on the net. For example, my blood pressure issue was cured with a morning drink on an empty stomach that included vinegar and lemon juice. I’m sorry, but there are unconscionable people out there, and some of them are doctors. Maybe many of them are doctors. And I think they sometimes deliberately give harmful things to people, knowing that they will make the people even more sick, and so naïvely keep coming back to them for more and more so-called help. I remember once that a Russian said that Americans are so greedy that they will sell you the rope that they want to hang you with. To me, the medical establishment is like that. They sell things that hurt people, and eventually it’s going to turn around and bite them in the butt when they need help. 2 Reply Stiggy Dore Stiggy Dore 2 months ago Within 1yr of being prescribed statins I went from a fit & healthy person weighing 12.5 stone to a 9 stone skeleton. High quality fats) and with a BMI 19 as a woman aged 66, I got 2021 a: 400 mg cholesterol in my classic lipids panel. Thereof: 287 LDL-C and 107 HDL-C But I was at 200 mg already in 2015. She (my doc) was afraid.. spoke of risks, but she knew how focused I am on lifestyle, diet and that I have some knowledge in biology. .. also that I had a pre-diabetes condition of some sort (hypoglycemia) So: We decided to let check my arterial walls, with the carotids. Result: can't be better. Finally she said: i've never seen an HDL-C above 100. and with your ideal weight... Familial dyslipidemia.. No mention of statins! (I would have refused anyway) Dr Robert Lustig has this condition and says high fat diet is not for everybody I must get an advanced lipid panel; in Germany this is not easy to get . Meanwhile I have to study the metabolism further to see how I can reduce risks... of glycation and oxydation of my many circulating LDL particles.. I am very aware that my glucose level must be low and the intake of fructose (greens fruits) highly reduced to protect my LDL particles. Now I pay great attention not to ingest any oxidized fatty acids of any sort. I am thinking that I might be helped by having more short and middle chains fatty acids and less long chains FA: ? It caused acute pancreatitis, which destroyed the rest of his organs, his necrotized pancreas perforated his intestines, and he died painfully with his intestinal waste seeping into his abdomen. If this description doesn't make you run the other way from statins, then I don't know what will. Stay away from them at all costs. Note: He never had pancreatic issues, never had a heart attack, was prescribed the statin for cholesterol and family history of heart disease. He didn't want to be on a statin and didn't understand what he was taking was a statin, but his doctor failed to communicate that the drug was a generic for a name brand statin. If he had known this, he would have refused to take it. My dad would be alive today and would have walked me down the aisle at my wedding if it weren't for the malpractice of that doctor.
