Had to take 3 bp pills daily but "forgot" to take them a couple of days in a row a couple of times but measured on a regular basis. Bp is in the 120s /80s most of the time, and even lower when I'm relaxed and not running around. Also, I lost 40 Ibs so far. How do I tell my doc that I don't need the pills anymore🤔??? Thank you so much Dr. Berry, you are my hero❤️ 343 KenDBerryMD Reply 64 replies William Brashear William Brashear 5 months ago I am 67 years old and was diagnosed with Hypertension (BP = 179/130). Doctor wanted me to start meds, I said I needed to do some research. I came across your videos on youtube and started watching them. I started Keto / Carnivore 4 weeks ago, went from eating 3-4 meals per day (high sugar, high carb) to only eating 1 to 2 meals day (sated by the red meat, bacon, eggs, salmon). I also eliminated all processed foods, pizza, sweets, soda, alcohol, grains, fruits (except for blueberries). I had my BP checked this morning because I was feeling dizzy. BP was 117/74!!! I had it checked again, 120/77!!! My BP has not been this low since I was in college (1973) running Track and Cross Country. This convinced me that my problem was just as you stated, I've been killing myself slowly with my high sugar, high carb diet for 60 years! I was also experiencing tingling in my feet (pre-diabetes) and enlarged prostate. The tingling is almost gone in my right foot and my prostate must be shrinking as my urine stream is stronger. This is all on the level, no BS. I've always felt that the western diet is to blame for most of our illnesses. Thanks for showing me a new way to eat and salvage my health. I've also been active most of my life, either running 3-5 miles per day or cycling 20 miles per day. Obviously that wasn't enough. You're a smart guy, thank you for sharing your research and knowledge. 236 Reply 16 replies Karrianne Capps Karrianne Capps 1 year ago Thank you so much for your common sense, scientifically based recommendations! My mother truly believed in the low salt, low cholesterol, low fat dogma that was the 1950s, 60s and 70s. She raised me not to cook with salt or add salt to my foods. Nothing said about sugar or other carbs and I was the poster child then of the overweight carb addicted person who just got bigger and bigger as time went on. I did a lot of reading and decided in 2019 to try the keto/low carb diet as a last resort before I was too sick to live anymore. The change was amazing. After packing on weight for 40 years I am still a work in progress but I lost over 130 pounds and am amazed at how good food tastes with salt and without sugar clogging up my life. I love listening to your videos as you explain things where everyone can understand them. 116 Reply 4 replies SteveEdwardCooper SteveEdwardCooper 2 weeks ago I am on two BP meds, one of which is such a high dose that my doctor keeps taking blood from me to make sure my liver isn't getting damaged by my meds. Take a.m. BP at the same time each day before eating breakfast or drinking coffee, with empty bladder, sitting, feet flat on the floor. Use left arm, rested on a stable surface. Rest for a couple of minutes after placing cuff on arm before activating monitor. 2. Take p.m. BP in essentially the same manner, but at least two hours after eating. 3. Record your readings to share with your doctor, especially if you are prone to white coat syndrome at the doctor's office. 18 Reply Wendy Wendy 1 year ago Thank you for doing this video! I always had great BP when I was younger (118/68), but as I aged, it did go up (and so did my weight). However, it is still within the normal range you stated, but most doctors want to put me on meds when they see the numbers. I know how to lower it via fewer carbs and walking, and will continue to refuse meds. Thankfully, my current doctor knows not to push as I know what works for my body and have managed my health for nearly 2 decades using supplements and dietary restrictions, especially since I have a heart arrhythmia that sometimes requires eating salt to rebalance it. I think many people have dehydration and electrolyte imbalances ((and don’t know it), which can cause several health issues (like heart arrhythmias). I learned this was the case for me right about the time my cardiologist recommended heart ablation (which I refused). Turns out I was always dehydrated when my heart became erratic, which sometimes can also be due to too much sweating (thus, loss of salt). I am SO thankful I do my research and listen to my intuition, and wish more people would realize they have the power to heal themselves through dietary changes and listening to health professionals like you and others who want to help people be healthy so meds are not necessary. Btw, my last cholesterol reading was 148 (a bit lower than it should be) and I will be 64 soon, so am doing pretty good for an old gal! Needless to say, aging doesn’t mean falling apart, and I plan to keep off meds and out of the hospital for as long as possible! 20 Reply TruDragon88 TruDragon88 1 year ago (edited) My new doctor (young guy) put me on the keto diet. Try this: Don’t exercise for two days, then take your blood pressure on the third day. Then walk two miles minimum per day, at a moderate pace, for two days and then take your blood pressure the next day. You’ll see a huge difference. Definitely do the diet thing also, but get out and get some exercise. Get the blood flowing. Of course, follow your doctor‘s instructions on exercise and don’t overdo it. 19 Reply Mike Oxlong Mike Oxlong 1 year ago (edited) My blood pressure was 152 / 101 and I changed my diet around. I do have logs of my BP going back several years. Diagnosed with congestive heart failure and A-fib. At the start of the diet, my BP went down drastically so that I was able to get off all but one of four BP meds and the one was cut in half. While playing 3-4 times a week a couple hours at a time, my bp was 120 over 70 with a pulse of 55 bpm. After the knees went, even with exercising 5 days a week, my pressure stayed in the 145 over 85 range even with daily meds. I started the Keto diet with intermitten fasting 2 months ago. I've lost 20 pounds and my average bp is now 118 over 65 with a heart rate of 52. I dumped the meds 6 weeks ago when I saw my bp dropping. Oh and btw, I love salt and eat several pinches a day of Himilayan and salt everything but bacon. 5 Reply Jennifer Burke Jennifer Burke 1 year ago I wasn't one to salt my food much pre-keto. Now 2.5 years in my palate changed so much that I (subjectively) put a TON of salt on my food and often just eat salt by itself. It helps fix thirst, helps get rid of pseudo hunger pangs, and is necessary for life! 4 Reply theripper2000 theripper2000 1 year ago First off, thank you Dr Berry for your videos. You were one of the knowledge people that help me decide to start Keto 2 weeks ago. So my journey has just started. On the topic of lowering blood pressure naturally. So about 6 months ago, I started to increase my potassium intake. With a banana in the morning and glass pineapple juice at night. Remember this was pre-keto. But as I was going to the doctor fairly regularly for a back injury. I saw a steady decrease in blood pressure. And that was the only thing I really changed in my diet. So I personally am going to say potassium did the trick. Now that I'm on keto, bananas and pineapple juice are not good choices so I'm finding other ways to get potassium by other means. Also side note I have not been on any blood pressure medication ever. But the doctors and nurses started saying we might need to do something. Then I started the potassium regiment. And they were surprised by the results. I am no doctor and not recommending this for anyone. I'm just commenting on what seemed to worked for me. 3 Reply Andrea Grinolds Andrea Grinolds 1 year ago Glad you talked about the two low BP. It's not up to your doctor if you take your BP meds or not. If you're within normal limits, taking the meds can kill you (hypotensive episode, syncope, lack of perfusion to brain/kidneys, etc.) When they ask you the meds you're taking, just say I'm not taking that anymore because I don't need it. My BP is ranging in... If I take it, I'll drop too low, end up in hospital (If you even have to say so much.). I'm a 49 year old 290lb. male, who was eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) and on no meds yet. My blood pressure has been creeping up for years, and every time I went for a wellness visit, the doctors would say, " That's natural as you get older." (Essentially, waiting to pass a point so I could be prescribed a pill) a week+ ago, I checked my BP, and it was through the roof 160/103! My family wanted me to go in to get meds. I didn't have a family doctor, so during my search I implemented your lessons : IF, OMAD, keto diet, cut out all sugars and carbs ( minus some veg) and started taking some D3, Magnesium, and Potassium. 1 week later, I'm down 10+ pounds, and my BP has gradually been creeping down (now at 128/92). Your lessons work! In the week I have been implementing these strategies, the hardest part was breaking the habits of old ways of eating. That lasted about 3 days. I experienced headaches during the first 4 days, but I attribute that to going cold turkey on caffeine (was a daily triple shot espresso and Mt Dew drinker). About 4 days in, my inflamation dropped so much that my knees and hands no longer hurt, and it doesn't hurt to squat down anymore! (WHAT?!?!) For anyone who's considering - Just Do It! It's very empowering to be in control of your own health. Again, thanks, Dr. B..... My blood pressure was 120/80 before keto and now it's 100/60 sometimes lower and occasionally a little higher but not by much. It's causing me frequent lightheadedness regardless of sodium and electrolyte intake. I saw digestion can affect mineral absorption. My blood pressure is normally high but I would rather have the lower pressure of about 150 over 90. I noticed that when I started to drink nothing BUT soda pops my pressure went way way up. You are correct, cut way down on carbs, drink water with ice. If you want to get your pressure down within the next 4 hours and its an emergency you can eat cayenne pepper on your food, about a quarter of a teaspoon which will naturally dielate your blood vessels wide open dropping your pressure and along with that eat a small clove of RAW Garlic which will regulate your pressure into the lower side and keep it there. This is how the Chinese regulate pressure, they say it works far better than any blood pressure meds. So get rid of the carbs, eat cayenne to get 5 hours of lowering your pressure and RAW garlic to keep it down for a longer period and your pressure will be normal. One cause of high pressure is a partial blockage of your arteries around your heart or kidneys or carotid arteries but once you eliminate carbs and sugars those blockages will clear up naturally and you will be good to go ... .. .. 1 Reply ruolov1 ruolov1 1 year ago (edited) I actually have the opposite issue. You shouldn't be able to taste the salt in the water. This has to be either Celtic salt or Himalayan (pink) salt. Table salt has had all minerals stripped out except sodium. I know it isn’t wise to offer specific medical advice over a message, but I’m curious if you’ve got a recommendation for someone (me) who has chronic, erratic-elevated BP (120-172/85-98) along with exercise induced tachycardia. In other words, how can I BOTH manage my HBP and also blunt (or control) my tachycardia with exertion. My doc’s got me on 100mg/d ER Verapamil. But, ever since taking it, I feel weak (thanks Ca2+ Ch Blkr’s!). I used to be on super low dose Lisinopril and did great on that, but it didn’t have the HR blunting I need to avoid red-lining during high intensity aerobic activity. By the way, thanks to you, and eating a keto-ish diet I’ve finally for the first time in my life positively effected my CHOL panel! Remarkable. I'm a nurse, have had very high plood pressure in the past,, like you I didn't want to take medications if I could treat something naturally. I'm trying to quit vaping, been at it for 8 years now. Cold turkey for a weekend was a disaster and I'm in a cessation class for the month. Since I've been keto for 1 month and keto/OMAD for 3 weeks or so, I've managed to lose 24 lbs. However this has not gotten me below 135/82 and that was on a good day out of 9 of checking it. I believe all the other times that I checked it was above 140/90, as you say in this vid. Which by the way, I think is a more logical goal especially considering aging generally increases systolic levels. I tried arginine, but the tablets are horse pills so I just asked my primary to double my lisinopril. Do you do telemedicine? I think it's the vaping. I'm on medical leave with multi-system issues. Doing all I can and so frustrated with the BP thing. At least they're not 170/100s anymore right!! Any video links or suggestions you can share are appreciated for the vaping! My knees are bad and I'm trying to stay the course to avoid having knee replacement, reverse fatty liver, insulin resistance, help my lumbar spine issue, and optimize my health the best that I can. I'm making great improvements and want to avoid oral cancer. Biopsy slated in a week or so to the roof of my mouth. My God, anyone reading this. There's such an expectation for nurses and doctors to be in tip top shape. Please remember we are all fallible, human, deserve respect, and dignity. That said please learn from our bad examples as well as the good, whatever they may be. Do better for yourself and listen to expert physicians like Dr. Berry and others here on YT. The study in no way supports the claim. There are so many problems with the study. The main one is that it draws from a population of older Americans that have health issues but they try to extrapolate the results to all adult Americans. The population they drew the data from does not match the population they are making recommendations for. I taught my students to think carefully about the population of interest in my stats 101 course; the AHA has no excuse for failing at this simple concept. How did they decide to recommend 130 in a study that was testing with a cutoff of 120? It seems they just wanted an excuse to change the recommendations to prescribe more statins. As an interesting aside, they had a below 120 systolic treatment group and a control group they were comparing. The below 120 systolic group did not even achieve the under 120 systolic blood pressure on average even with multiple medications! The conclusion also downplays the increased incidence of liver failure in the treatment group... EDIT: I don't mean to criticize the SPRINT study itself or the researchers that worked on it. I am criticizing the AHA and how they are pretending the study provides more evidence than it does to change blood pressure recommendations. More statins will be needed if you prescribe them to all people above 130 systolic instead of 140. Companies that make statins donate large amounts of money to the AHA. Is the AHA acting in the best interest of the population? 9 Reply 1 reply James LosAngeles James LosAngeles 1 year ago ~ Everyone over 40 y/o should have a BP cuff & glucose meter. I will try this. my water weight definetly went down by avoiding foods like fast food or taco bell fake beef or fake cheese. And in my old age I notice my heart feels better and including real juices and veg juiceing. I'm sure a active person/construction worker can intake more carbs and burn them. Teens are definitely intakeing to much carbs. Reply Peter Kizer Peter Kizer 1 year ago Love your stuff doc, keep it up.
