THE RED PILL OR THE BLUE?
METFORMIN OR BERBERINE? Which should you take?
There's 1 huge difference between them that could rock your decision.
Metformin & berberine,
they've both been used for treating diabetes.
And now they're both being considered by the longevity community.
But there's one HUGE difference between them that could make all the difference in choosing between them.
In today's video, I'll be discussing both metformin and berberine, how much they're alike, how they both have the potential to extend lifespans, the drawbacks for each, and dosing. And I'll be going into depth about the massive difference between them.

For all you you guys asking whether you can take both, when I was in Costa Rica with David Sinclair, he told me that he recommended both to several of his patients. I've also read several studies where they administered both and reported no ill effects, beyond those common to one or the other.

I was 65 and was put on Metformin. I did research and found out it inhibited brain clarity plus allot of other things - and I was studying for a 3 hr university exam, so I threw it out post haste. My research uncovered Berberine which did not induce brain fog + other benefits with exercise, which I was also doing. My blood sugar was 14.4 (I passed my exam btw) after 3 months I was down to 7.2 and then 6.2 a month later. My endocrinologist said whatever you are doing keep doing it. Berberine 500mg morning and 500mg evening. Works like a dream, for me at least.

My personal anecdote is as follows: I was bordering on metabolic syndrome so my naturopath put me on metformin. I took it for about a year, and it brought down my A1C from 7.2 to 5.6, but did nothing for my fasting blood glucose which averaged 105 across the entire year. The other negative was that I lost significant endurance during exercise ( hiking, mountain biking ) and would top out way earlier than ever before. It was like metformin made my entire body weaker, my muscles would stop working long before prior times on the same hikes/routes I had been doing for many years. So, to say metformin makes more glucose go into the muscles? I cannot imagine how that could be the case, it certainly made my performance worse and made me more tired overall.

I've been on a keto diet since January and I have lost weight, but my fasting blood glucose was still too high, between 100 to 115mg/dl. 10 days ago I started taking berberine 500mg twice a day. My blood glucose readings improved noticeably after a couple of days. I've not changed my amount of physical activity, but now my typical fasting BG is 85 to 95 mg/dl. That's a big difference. Berberine seems to work. I'll increase my exercise routine and see how it does.

Anecdotally I can say Berberine did far more for me than Metformin. Berberine does far more than just lower blood sugar. It has contractility effects on the heart, increases neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. It reduces inflammatory cytokines, is an Id01 inhibitor. It's far more multidimensional than Metformin. Berberine also allowed me to exercise harder...and it felt like I was getting fitter.

A very interesting discussion. I've recently started taking berberine for Type II diabetes. Anecdotally, it seems to have some benefits. I agree that a lot more research has to be done. But you provide a very good perspective. Keep it up. I'm a 70's senior and interested in factors that seem to have an impact on both diabetes and aging.

Absolutely fascinating! I have been taking Berberine for about a year. The prescription drugs for type 2 diabetes made me feel awful and I had been taking them for years, when it reached the point where insulin was mentioned, for me it was a step too far. I decided to try Berberine and I now feel so much better. I am not sure that Berberine works as quickly as prescription meds and I have no one to consult with regarding dosage, long term etc. But I feel so much better! A word of warning though, I desperately need a new hip, have been told they won't operate if I am taking Berberine, I will have to stop taking it for at least a week prior to the operation and I know my blood sugar will rise to a point where they won't operate anyway. I am 68 and live in the UK.

Excellent evidence-based video, very thorough and accurate on molecular detail (my lab studies diabetes). I would also like to see SGLT2 inhibitors studied in aging. Nobody should start on metformin without first having a basic metabolic panel to assess kidney function.

Very interesting content. I have taken Berberine for just under 2 years. I was diagnosed with T2D just over 4 years ago and put on Metformin. After a couple of months, I was on the the full 2000mg a day dosage. Well, I just couldn't get on with it. Terrible stomach cramps, flatulence and loose bowels in general.
I just stopped taking the Metformin, and, to be perfectly honest, I didn't notice any difference in my blood sugar control.
I'd already switched to a low carb way of eating,, along with intermittent fasting - aka late breakfast - and found that if I went for a short walk after my evening meal, I was just fine.
I discovered berberine later and thought I'd give it a go. I exercise regularly - resistance training and HIIT -and can't say I've noticed it having any detrimental effect on my fitness.
Studies are interesting, but the best study is N=1. My blood sugars are almost always normal, and have been since I changed my lifestyle and diet.
If you are keen on fighting the effects of aging, well, sarcopenia is definitely one aspect of aging that is best postponed as long as possible.
Thank you for sharing!

Metformin causes me severe gastric disturbances. I started researching berberine and decided to start taking it. I don't experience the gastric upset as with Metformin, so the question of M vs. B as it relates to exercise is a moot point for me, but glad to know that exercise will count. Thanks

I started taking Lipo Berberine 6 weeks ago. As a side note my limp and stiffness from my osteoarthritis went away! I actually had to Google the two to read some promising papers on Berberine efficacy in osteoarthritis. I take only one 150mg Lipo Berberine/day- Renue By Science. I’m thinking this Liposomal delivery system is more bioavailable. I just know I can walk normally again.

There is a growing amount of Published studies on Berberine's Oncological / Anti - cancerous affects alongside it's well established use with treating Diabetes. Worth looking into. Oncologists in the US and China who have used protocols including Berberine have reduced the use of Chemo compounds by up to 16x when used in conjunction with Berberine. Dramatically reducing the risks of Chemo

I was diagnosed with Type two Diabetes at age 56 and immediately went on Metformin, at age 63 I started having stomach and digestive issues because the dosage of Metformin was now too much. I switched to three 500 mg Berberine per day and three Tumeric capsules per day, Blood sugar has remained controlled with a A1c under 7, with no digestive or stomach issues. I also walk 20,000 steps a day.

Good comprehensive presentation about metformin and berberine. I cannot take metformine as prescriptions that contain significant amounts of sulfur trigger an allergy. Berberine provides less of a inflammation risk. We desperately need more research into berberine as it is enormously promising.

Thank you for making this video. I've been pondering those very questions! I stopped taking metformin and berberine because of the possible negative effect of either on the benefits of exercise. I'm 75 but everyone comments that I look much younger. Exercise is largely why, plus good genes. Maybe nmn and other things have something to do with it, but I believe exercise is critical to slowing physical and mental deterioration. I thought maybe I shouldn't take metformin or berberine, then, and losing out on the positive things about them with respect to anti-aging. Your discussion answers my questions perfectly.

Thank you for the video Lance. I read that the bioavailability of berberine is probably only .5%, and definitely less than 1%. For MetForman it is 40 to 60%. This leads me to consider that the only reason we did not see some of the negative side effects from berberine is because it actually is not working. It also makes little sense that the doses would be similar. It seems that the scientific community understands just how wide the gap in bio availability is as there are several research papers talking about how to improve the bioavailability of Berberine. I actually had been taking berberine on the thesis that it is OK if you exercise a lot, but now from what I learned in your video I am reconsidering. Thank you very much.

Wow isn't a year a long time! Since I commented below, I found myself with a diabetic foot ulcer and was in a bit of trouble. My issue was that even though my numbers seemed OK, the damage was done. Now on Berberine and dealing with the ulcer with the help of a hospital podiatry clinic. MRI for infection testing, blood tests (3) all come back good though. Plenty to consider but importantly now on Berberine and it seems to be keeping things under control. Diet and exercise alone as it would seem need a helping hand if you get it late! Thanks to the Australian government for the free health care as well.

I am a long-time type two diabetic. I found Berberine about 5 or 6 years ago and started taking it (Swanson Berberine Complex with cinnamon, gymena, and fenugreek). I’ve been taking metformin for years and finally had to add insulin in 2016. It wasn’t til I added the Berberine that I started having better blood sugar control. (Most mornings my fasting glucose readings are between 70s and 120 compared to before Berberine—200s to 300s or more. I had to deal with stomach problems ever since taking metformin and didn’t know it was the problem. I take 2 1000 mg a day of metformin. I am going to wean myself from it and add regular exercise as well. I am told that I look younger than my age. Possible it’s a Berberine side effect. Also, my cholesterol has normalized due to taking psyllium husk (Amazon). Thank you for the video.

Weight loss related question, for those who have used berberine. I know a lot of people use and suggest using it for weight loss. What has been your experience with it? Did it help you lose weight? If so, in what way(s), how long did it take to notice it’s effects and benefits? I’m considering taking it in my fat loss journey.

Its under appreciated that metformin blocks the B vitamine absorbsion, not just b-12. There's newer videos giving many many good benefits of B1/thiamine + variants on many low energy (etc) applications. Just mentioning for those taking metformin to test test test your B's and supliment.

Having a depression disorder and diabetes. I stopped taking Metformin because of the B12 issues and kidney issues. Also being diagnosed with stage ! kidney problems. I've found a low carb diet to be the most effective with controlling my diabetes. Berberine is something new I've only heard of in the last couple years. So my familiarity with it is limited.

It’s important to note that the way you take berberine in traditional Chinese medicine is by grinding it into a powder and rubbing it on your tongue, chewing, and swallowing it. Western medicine has this fascination with taking pills but the bitter taste is important in how it is absorbed and utilized in the body.

Last night my glucose level was 266, after a meal. Took 3 capsules of Turmeric and 2 capsules of Berberine and drank a cup of black tea (of course, I didn't take them all in one shot). About 4 or 5 hrs. later my glucose level dropped to 130!! I stopped taking metformin a couple of years ago due to the nasty side effects of bloating, stomach discomfort and diarrhea. So yes, Berberine is the one for me, but I hope they do further studies on Berberine :)

I wanted to take Berberine, but it had the reverse effect and gave me insomnia. I don’t think it clears out of your system quickly. I was still wired in the morning. I only drink one cup of decaf in the morning , so I know it’s not caffeine. I tried several times with the same reaction 😢

thanks for this, I'm currently on 1 gram of Metformin per day for my type II diabetes disease. I had heard about Berberine and super berberine but for me the cancer prevention of Metformin wins for me vs the Berberine with excercise route, plus there was various studies of those who just excercise hard every day are at greater risk of arthritis in their joint and knees due to the constant pounding on the treadmills.

I have been taking 2gr of metformin daily for 5 years. I do not exercise due to chronic pain from an unrelated cause. My non-fasting blood glucose is around 105. Without ANY constraints on my diet at all, my 5'10" frame maintains a weight of about 170. Before metformin, my weight bounced around all over the place. EASILY JUMPING TO 180. Now, I just stay at 170.

I’ve been taking Berber ice for about 18 months just before bed. The strategy is to drop sugar levels for better sleep, kick start autophagy and finally reduce inflammation.
I don’t have any adverse side effects and it seems to help me sleep better.
Great video.

I'm a huge fitness and exercise freak. Recently I've been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I was put on 1000mg of Metformin and my workouts went to crap. Fast forward a few months, and I have suggested Berberine, I split my meds in two, morning Berberine and evening Metformin. My exercise is back to optimal.

Interesting because it’s obvious that different treatments don’t work for everybody - but it’s necessary to share what both products Actually do to the body.
And since Metformin is a Pharmaceutical Experiment Drug, I would definitely select the Natural Medical Drugs first

Very nice summary!
FWIW, there's been some work on improving the bioavailability of berberine. I've been finding studies on berberine supplement preparation (berberine chelates (e.g. sulphate) more bioavailable, and even with the non-chelate, spray-dry better than liquid)
I also found a small study (n<20) looking at taking it while fasting vs with fat. It's a slender thread, but I'm about to start taking it with fat (butter coffee) - and start looking for a chelate.
If I had a Rx for metformin, that seems to be the better studied (western medicine) drug, but there's no way for me to take it on non-exercise days (probably same reason as you: I'm at it every day.)
Oh, there's also some stuff about berberine availability increased with 'biofield energy', which is a bit too new-agey for me to take seriously.

Berberine, I took it years ago as a drink from a herbalist as she used the root of wild barberry. She used it to treat acne and seemingly worked very well., not for me for that. For years afterwards when we met she would say I was her second failure to treat acne over her years of using it. I didn't mind : It did improve my overall health and immune system incredibly at the time.

The real issue is making a decision as to WHY you are taking each medication. If the goal is enhancing autophagy, then perhaps adding Met/Berb ONLY during a 3+ day fast is the key. Since the 'current understanding' of autophagy is that:
1. Autophagy is engaged at a higher level during extended fasting,
2. Senescent cells tend to 'gather over time'
3. Intermittent fasting's goal is to 'clear' the senescent cells
Perhaps, normal exercise without met/Berb is the key, and adding in a fasting 'week' (3+ days) during which adding Met to enhance the autophagy effect during that time. We will be able to 'clear the senescent cells' without overly obstructing the effects of exercise during the rest of the non-fasting time.
I'm really thinking about implementing a 5-7 day fast the last week of every month, during which I add back Met at 1.5g/day during that time only. And remove it from my daily regimen. Theoretically, I'd gain the benefit to autophagy from both actions. The question I then have is should I do the same with Fisetin/Quercetin.

I bought 3 bottles of berberine last year, but haven't touched it. My current approach is simply to eat low carb - no grains or sweets, only chicken, eggs, fish, legumes and vegetables - and hopefully that means the glucose isn't an in issue anyway. My A1c is 5.3, so I'm not (and never have been) pre-diabetic.
I've been trying many different supplements now, and maybe once I feel I have consistent biomarker results, I'll add in the berberine and see what happens.

I just started taking Berberine and already seeing some results. My fasting blood sugar with a meter is usually in the mid to high 90s. In lab work it’s in the mid to high 80s. However, I’ve had A1c’s in the 5.6-5.8 range the past 5 years or so. Today, FBG a was 95. I took 1000 mg of Berberine, went light hiking, had brunch and 3 hrs later my blood glucose was averaging 76! I took my BG about six times because I thought it was a mistake! I was expecting it to be maybe 135-140. The highest it would go was 80! 😮

I was on metformine for almost 5 months. I had such bad gastric side effects (diarrhea and vomiting). I had to get off of it. It wasn't doing anything for my blood sugar anyway. However, this was back in early 2013.
However, last year in October, I started developing signs of Adrenal Insufficiency. Side effects of Adrenal Insufficiency- A1C starts to drop (quickly too) (my A1C is now 4.6 despite being on steroids), constipation/diarrhea- multiple times a day, vomiting- multiple times a day, extreme weakness, extreme fatigue, extreme dizziness and such bad salt cravings that I took to getting mass amounts of packets of soy sauce (had between 4 to 7 packets a day, God I was so fucking itchy, but it was the only thing that eased the vomiting). I have also had a worsening of my dysautonomia (I'm no longer compatible with being vertical for more than 4 hours, used to only be 2, a day in total and ABSOLUTELY view being vertical to be the most torturous thing that I can do to myself so I am horizontal much of the day). Only way I can safely drive is if I chain vape 50mg/mL nicotine eliquid (no, please don’t do this if you've never smoked before--> I'm only doing it for medical reasons because it appears to con my body into pumping the necessary oxygenated blood to my brain through the stimulant property of nicotine). I've also had to drastically reduce the amount of insulin I take as well.

Metformin on rest days as far from exercise timewise (24h at least), and Berberine on training days. Berberine is, unfortunately, very expensive compared to metformin (10 times more), over here, so taking only berberine is not viable for me right now.
To reduce side effects from Metformin, you should supplement with B12, folate and NAC. As for the stomach problems, by not taking it daily, switching it out with berberine, your gut gets time to recover. Also prebiotics and soluble fiber (oatfiber for example) supplements will help.

Thanks for the great overview. I would love to hear updates about berberine.
After reading all the comments, I find I'm rather unique here. I take 2g of berberine per day to manage IBS-D symptoms. Berberine works as an anti-bacterial agent that appears to address Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). I started with 500mg per meal and found I had to move up to 1g per meal (up to 2 meals per day, no breakfast). The IBS-D returns in a day or two if I don't take Berberine. Symptoms basically feels like getting kicked in the gut about 45 min after eating (esp. anything with garlic or onions in it), leaving me groan in bed for 3hrs. I'm well motivated to continue this treatment as there doesn't appear to be a cure and my doctors had no alternatives to suggest.
How does berberine interact with NMN supplements? In other videos, you noted that NAD+ increased SASP. But would berberine help down regulate this interaction? A sounds like the occasional senolytic hit-n-run would still be beneficial. I have some interesting results from high doses of curcumin for a few days at a time. Unlike Fisetin and PCC1, curcumin has a lot of research showing that its fairly safe even with high dosages w/r to cancer treatments.
I agree about exercise as well. Both exercise and diet, esp. fasting, are clearly foundational for any longevity approach. Anything that may hinder this is counter productive.

Thanks for good info. I/we have been evaluating taking Berberine or Metformin and looking at the pros and cons of each. Since we are both athletic individuals, the clear cut information on exercise and benefits stands out as being a deciding factor. I also tried XR Metformin and felt foggy, didn't sleep well, was achy and tired the next day. Not for me.

For me, taking metformin has been like taking vitamin supplements. I notice NO benefit at all and I've been taking it for almost 14 years. I've certainly noticed no difference in my blood glucose levels. And I've developed prostate cancer. But, to be fair, I probably developed the cancer around the same time as I was diagnosed with diabetes. I have very slow growing tumors. My doctor says I'll die of something else before my prostate cancer gets me.
Speaking of cancer and supplements, the only supplement that has had a measurable effect on me is vitamin D3. Before taking it my PSA was 19. After taking megadoses for less than two months my PSA, which had been rising slowly for 14 years, DROPPED to 10.5.

I've taken Berberine in the past because of mTor as I used to gym a lot.
However thanks to T2D which runs in the family, I'm now taking a complex of Berberine, Cinnamon, Fenugreek and Gynema sylvestre.
Just a couple days in, and mental clarity feels great. It's like Berberine and then some.
I exercise a lot. so I'm looking forward to seeing any benefits to this combination.
Keep an eye on ergo log, it's a good source of information.

I am currently on Metformin and have been for a couple of years. My latest blood work showed low hemoglobin and I have been having some nerve problems. (Tingling and numbness) I have found that both of these can be attributed to B12 deficiency. That is my main reason for looking at Berberine. I am also a competitive powerlifter so I also workout regularly. This also shows that I should switch over to Berberine. Then to find out that it also helps with triglycerides just makes it that much better.

I used metformin for 9 years and I had to live with what I thought was fibromyalgia. One year ago, money was short and didn't take metformin for 10 days. My pain was gone. Restarted it and it came back. Stopped it and it was gone again.
I stopped it once and for all. After researching I discovered berberine and I have been using it since May last year. I am up for my health check up and I will see its effect over my insulin (also reduced carb consumption).
Besides, no need for prescription.

I experienced painful peripheral neuropathy when on metformin. Other than that metformin was brilliant. I tested this by going off metformin and the neuropathy gradually disappeared, went back on metformin and the neuropathy started coming back within two weeks. I had been taking b12 via injection over all this period.
Would Berberine cause a similar effect? Or is it different enough that it may not cause peripheral neuropathy? Just wondering if any studies have been made looking into this… going on and off blood sugar meds is not good for pre diabetes I would imagine but the pain was just too much, even the second time it began coming back!

I don't take either but have been doing my homework and what I'm finding is about what you are saying... The top anti aging researchers like Sinclair are just taking metformin on days they don't workout or do any exercise.. so they may only take it 1 to 3 times per week.. I say take berberine on workout days and metformin on days off... that's the study I want to see

Isn't the MTOR pathway critical in protein synthesis and muscle tissue anabolism? If so, does it mean we have to choose between longevity, and fighting sarcopenia?

My blood sugar is higher than I would like it to be, but not so high as to qualify me as being prediabetic. I took a heaping 1/4 tsp of berberine 3X per day for months. My pillowcase has yellow stains to prove it. Berberine did not do anything for my marginally high blood sugar. I have now quit taking berberine.

Any thoughts on taking both Metformin and Berberine? Is there a symbiotic relationship? My one concern with Berberine is that it being a supplement versus a drug is the potential for differences in quality and safety with manufacturing.

Interesting findings. I wonder what the latest is on Berberine. I started taking it 1x a day to assist with my intermittent fasting 16:8 about a year ago. I have not lost weight. I finally caved in to going keto a couple of weeks ago.
Oddly enough, last week my A1c test came back high for the first time in my life.
Ugh! What I'd like to know is how to get more out of the berberine if it’s not absorbed effectively?

Nicely done Lance. Quality. One thing on the Met study and exercise: this was aerobic exercise only. Walking and weight training have little negative effects on met or the other.

I take 1500 mg of Berberine a day & it has brought my blood sugar (upon waking) down from 151 to 108. Also C60 Complete with curcumin & black seed oil helped too. Heard many type 2 diabetics suffer from congested liver so the C60 helps to cleanse the live. Just saying that has been my experience, dont know if it will help u or not.

I've been on metformin for years. It doesn't cause any issues for me at all but maybe it's because my doctor gave me such a low dose every day (only 1 gram per day). My blood is pretty much normal because I watch what I eat and I do intermittent fasting, but I begged my doctor to continue giving me metformin prescription because I wanted to tap its longevity abilities. Recently, I added berberin so now I take both at 1 gram each per day. I don't see any difference with berberin either but it could be that it takes years for the effect to be shown. Wish me luck.

Solid video. I’ve been looking into Berberine and a glucose disposal agent in conjunction with calorie restriction. Like the sound of the short half life as well as potential athletic enhancements.

I'm 67 and was put on Metformin 2 1/2 years ago. It messed me a great deal. Leg pain, soreness, and weakness. Numbness in my feet. Joint pain (knees, shoulders and back). Tightness in my stomach. brain fog. How do I know that metformin did all of this? Because after 2 days of not taking it, all these issues went away! I'll never take it again. It made me feel like I was 90 years old.

What you said is interesting my husband and I were just randomly Dr Google searching the Internet for information about furthering – he’s recently been diagnosed as a diabetic and is taking Metformin – we have recently both started going to the gym about two months ago – my games at the gym is significantly more than what his are – and he was complaining why he was not seeing any results at all even though he is training quite hard – significantly no significant change in his weight – that’s why we were looking at berberine – thank you for this information and we may just do our own little experiment where we go on blabbering see if myResults improve and see if he has any improvements in his body weight and blood sugar. – Thank you for the information keep doing great work.

For 30 years I'd been taking 800 to 1,000 mg metformin for my T2 diabetes (A1C = +10.5). Recently I learned about berberine, and have added 500 mg, 3 times a day. I was so disappointed to learn that Metformin may cancel out the benefits of working out, albeit controversial the study. My decision: take both every day! It hasn't hurt. I'm a 72 woman, weigh 107, 5'1", scuba dive, work out 6 days a week (HIIT, Nautilus. floor exercises). While I am still diabetic, it's under control for the first time in 30 years (current A1C = 6.8).

Both metformin and berberin inhibit MTOR, with the slew of benefits that come with that, but one major issue: loss of muscle mass. The latter may not appear in any short or mid-term studies but it's a risky game if you're hoping for pleasant 80s/90s. Not enough muscle, and here goes your balance, the fun you can have outdoors, and also it's a vicious cycle of burning less calories and therefore needing stronger interventions to keep pounds off...

My doctor declined to prescribe me metformin for longevity, so I've started on Berberine. I suppose I could get metformin if I tried harder, but berberine seems just as good if not better. I take it dissolved in olive oil as it is apparently like resveratrol. So far so good, but early days for me.

Interesting content. I find that articles, like this, tend to bring out all of the negatives about metformin. As with any medication, there are issues but those who use it, successfully, rarely post comments on these videos. So, for some positive feedback, I have been on metformin for well over 20 years, since my 50s. My HbAic is never over 5.9 which, to me, is all I need to know. Would I try berberine? Perhaps, but at my age do I want to take a chance? It takes 90 days to see if your HbA1c has been affected, and a lot of damage can be done, in that time. So....

Thank you for this wonderful video. Regarding berberine lowering cholesterol: The 'total cholesterol' is irrelevant since it is a mixture of good and bad stuff. Gerald "Jerry" Reaven established the triglyceride (bad stuff) : HDL (good stuff) ratio as the best lab test for coronary heart disease. Ratios above 2.5 in Caucasians and above 1.5 in African-Americans are concerning. LDL matters but not nearly as much as triglycerides and HDL.

I'm happy taking 500mg Berberine 2-3x a day spread out. No impact on exercise is the biggest single reason for me, as I do HIIT 4-5 days a week. The lack of confirmed authenticity of supply for metformin is my biggest concern.

Lance,
You're an excellent speaker. I really liked this video my friend, excellent work.
Here's my opinion. I feel "almost" everyone above the age of 40 should consider taking Metformin and NOT berberine. Note: I've been taking Metformin for about a year now however, I took berberine for about six months prior to taking Metformin. It's important to note, I'm not a diabetic.
1. Berberine didn't change my blood work much.
2. Berberine didn't change my appetite much.
3. I didn't lose any weight taking berberine.
4. I found it difficult and "chore like" to take berberine because you have to take it 3-4 times per day (not easy to do).
Metformin:
1. My blood work definitely improved significantly especially my triglycerides.
2. My appetite went down. You almost have to remember to eat sometimes.
3. I lost weight (pretty quickly). Went from 270 to 235 within about four months. Note: 235 is a really good weight for me. I went from getting no female attention to having to triage who I wanted to date. Guys, if you're having difficulty getting women, your weight is likely the culprit.
4. I did get loose stools for a few weeks after i began taking Metformin however, it shrank my bloated belly so it wasn't a bad thing. It goes away after a while.
5. It's easier to take (less chore-like). Dose is usually once or twice per day.
Here's a list of the known benefits of taking Metformin. There's probably more so please chime in to this list if I missed something....
1. Lowers bad cholesterol.
2. Lowers triglycerides.
3. Makes the insulin your pancreas produces more effective.
4. Anti-cancer properties.
5. Prevents type II diabetes.
6. Lowers blood pressure (over time).
7. Improves constipation.
8. Reduces your chances of having a stroke or heart attack.
9. Weight loss (less fat storage with more effective insulin, maintaining normal blood glucose levels and lower appetite).
10. Anti-aging properties with AMPK stimulation (still unclear on this particular benefit).
11. Lower cholesterol and triglycerides will likely improve sexual health. Less likely to experience impotence and will definitely allow your ED medication to work better. Triglycerides and Viagra do not mix well. Also, weight loss will help as well. Note: Metformin can reduce testosterone levels so be aware of that.
12. Lower cholesterol and triglycerides can improve eye sight and slow deterioration.
13. Lower blood pressure equals less stress on your kidneys.
14. Decreased depression and anxiety (studies proved this).
15. Improved cognitive function and decreases chances of developing dementia.
16. Improves liver health. Can treat and reverse fatty liver disease via improved lipids.
17. Keeping blood glucose in a normal range and staving off diabetes could prevent gum disease.
Why aren't we all taking Metformin??

I had cancer. (I hope past tense). In the past year, I went vegan, intermittent fasting 18:6, do prolonged fasts of 48-72 hours 1-2 times a month. I had four rounds of chemo (refused to do more), surgery, and no post radiation. I take Berberine 3X a day, 500 mg, for a total of 1500. I also take liposomal cur cumin, vitamin D3. Was exercising everyday, but I have metatarsal, so can't walk as much. My tests so far have come back clear. MRI and CAT-scan, clear. However, my WBC, white blood cells, have tanked for the first time to 2300. This has never happened before and the only thing that I've done differently in the past month and a half is not long fast. But, I googled the effects of berberine on the immune system and there are a few findings that Berberine reduces white blood cell counts. It does help with the blood sugar, but, how can Berberine help the immune system if it reduces white blood cells? I'm not taking berberine until I get the results of my next blood tests.

Often neglected side effects of Berberine are the inhibition of platelet aggregation and thrombin inhibition. For many that would be beneficial. If already on ASA or other platelet agents or anticoagulants perhaps a problem. When added to the bit of platelet aggregatiion inhibition from omega 3 fatty acids, I had an unpleasant hemorrhagic event.

I did not try Berberine yet but I have to say that Berberine will be more expensive but if it does not have the same side effects like stomach problems then it is worth the money. Metformin should always be taken with food and I really mean while you eat swallow those pills or else. I normally have a caste iron stomach and nothing normally hurts my stomach but Metformin got me. I am still willing to take it sometimes.

As berberine can elevate insulin sensibility it also means that it could elevate creatine assimilation, which is also a bonus on fitness and longevity status.

How interesting. I lost about 90 Lbs. Am on a reduced dose of metfirmin. Was 2G a day, now 1g. I have been heavily exercising in the gym. 6 hours a week through about 4 days of visits. I really do not look 65, no kidding. Abd am Buikding muscle as witnessed by continually abd methodically raiding the amounts I lift in all muscle groups.
This makes me think I should abandon Metformin and take berberine. It is hard to make gains! But I am doing it. But the bioavailability thing really stands out to me. I would ask my Dr. But He is such a pharma TOOL, I do not know if he would listen. I am not made of money, and Metformn is paid for. I am not sure what to do. I may check into berberine, as Inconsider this to be my lifestyle forever. Keep on exercising abd seeing just how strong I can get. Plus I do stretches, planks, and HIIT, I do not do regular cardio. Only some OCTANE elliptical to help my knee I just had operated on. Thanks for what you do, you are a literal treasure.

I was on metformin for about 8 years, two pills a day one at lunch and one at supper, 1000 ml each dose. I tried berberine once but I did not insist. After a while, I started taking a different brand of berberine which has good reviews. In about 3 months my fast blood sugar was a little high in the morning. What changed? Here is the answer: I used to walk a mile a day when I was on metformin and I still doing this on berberine. I had to move from one place to another about a 1/2 mile apart. I took several trips from one place to another carrying all my belongings on a bicycle. I wasn't eating much because I was too busy and I was skipping my berberine pills. After a week of doing that, one day I was at home and I started getting the shakes and I checked my blood sugar. It read 90. I realize that exercising lowers my blood sugar. 90 is normal but for me, it was low because I never got to this low.

I was prescribed Metformin for insulin resistance a few months ago and had no stomach issues and didn't lose any weight (even though I wasn't hungry and only ate one -2 small low fat , low calorie meals a day). I did however start having severe knee pain in both knees....what's that about? My triglycerides & cholesterol didn't get lower on Metformin but my a1c dropped a 1/2 to 1 point. The doc just told me to stop Metformin to see if the knee pain subsided...it DID within a couple days!! It's amazing because I already use a cane for nerve damage and severe spine pain from a jacked up lower spine fusion but after my knees got so bad I was going to have to move to a wheelchair (which ive resisted for years). My question will Berberine help with the insulin resistance AND not hurt my knees? Thank you so much for the video.🙂

I intermittent fast. I workout in the morning in a fasted state. My first meal after workout is low carb. I'm trying to extend the fast by implementing a "Fasting Mimicking" technique. With my first meal containing significant carbs, I take 750mg of Berberine. But, I only do this about 2-3 times per week, on my rest days or easy days. I don't want my mTor pathway inhibited after a hard workout. It seems counterproductive to me.

I started taking it about 10 days ago and I'm feeling some really good improvements. The anti-inflammation is no joke! Almost cleared up completely, the extremely painful tendonitis in both of my shoulders. And I've had that intense pain for 2 years! It's the perfect compliment to Turmeric!

Just for clarity, don't confuse Tree turmeric with Turmeric (Curcuma longa). These are different plants with different effects. Berberine is found in Tree turmeric and other plants, but not in Turmeric, which contains curcuminoids.

I can attest to everything he is saying!!! This has made my sugar go way down when It was NOT. I have seen numbers in the 500s, 400s, and a lot of high 300s. I take this with my metformin and glipizide and it goes down to the low 100s... the last two days it was 116. My heart is not palpating anymore. No pain in my feet. I was having weird waves in my brain and they went away. Joints are way better (arthritis in knees and hip). My thinking is way better. And I cant remember what else..lol PLEASE check it out!

Thank you Dr Berg. I am insulin resistant and was about to ask my Doctor for a script for Metformin. I would much rather take a natural supplement than to risk known negative side effects of Metformin.

A friend of mine took me to a Persian restaurant and ordered this dish with saffron chicken and the most amazing fluffy rice and it had these red things sprinkled on top which added a bit of sourness and meshed amazing with the grilled saffron chicken. I asked him what the red things were and turned out they were berberines. These ancient civilization s, like Chinese and Indians as well have known about these benefits for 1000s years and only now are we finding out. Lol.

Dr Berg. Awesome information. Thank you so much. I've started taking Berberine and Hawtrhone Berry (that was mentioned in one of your other videos) with great results. Question. Can these supplements be taken long term, or should there be a few months break somewhere in-between?

Was doing a lot of research looking for appetite suppressants and I hear a lot of testimonials from people saying it reduced their diet drastically. To the point they had to stop because they were losing too much weight too fast. Sounded too good to be true to me lol, had to give it a try. Just started today

I am 64 years old and on March 1st of 2021 I went to my doctor for my yearly physical. I was 321 pounds.
I found out my AC1 was 6.4 and was told by my doctor to come back in three months and if my AC1 hadn’t improved I would have to be put on some kind of medication.
I immediately began Dr. Bergs plan and went on low carb keto lifestyle change. It took over two months to work into the OMED plan. I started having a protein shake between 3:00-4:00pm and then eating my meal around 6:30pm .
On June 2nd I had my follow up with my doctor. I have lost 27pounds and my AC1 is now 5.8 !!!
I plan to stay on Dr. Bergs plan until I reach my ideal body weight.
I am 5’11 so that will probably take me a year to reach my correct weight.
Thank you Dr. Berg!

Ive been looking into this for sometime for a family member, but when my doc told me I'm pre-diabetic, I decided to try it first, cause I have been having numbing sensation in my hands throughout the day . I could tell something was happening when I first took it cause I felt the numbing intesfy and then go away gradually and this happened a couple times taking it. Also if I take before sleep because I snack sometimes at night I don't have that numbing feeling that feels like the blood isn't flowing right whenni wake up. Well 2 weeks in and better already. The numbing has almost completely gone. I need to stop with the sweets. But its a life saver. Will continue with it and do better with my health. A must try. Get a good brand thats organic

I'm still a beginner though. My question today..... Is it safe to take the Berberine and Metformin together? Also is there any Berberine brand that you would recommend and how many mg's daily? Keep up the AWESOME JOB you are doing. I totally love all your videos.

I’m not diabetic, but I wanted to experiment with this supplement out of curiosity. I took 500mg 3x/day, and on the 3rd day I took one in the morning with a carbless breakfast and went hypoglycemic for the first time in my life. It was a terrible feeling, but shows how effective this stuff really is.

Berberry is extremely common in all sorts of dishes we make in Iran. If you ever have visited a Persian restaurant, you’d know it by now. Our classic famous dish zereshk polo which is extremely delicious is made w it. We use turmeric in every single dish and garlic and berberry and sumac in almost every other. Plus Persian advieh is seperately added to most dishes which is made of cardomom, cinnamon, cumin, nutmeg, cloves.

Don't know if there's any correlation, could be coincidental but I wonder if anyone else has experienced this?

It activates AMPK and suppresses MTOR. In laymans terms it's great for longetivity but you don't want to take it when doing intense exercise or weight lifting as it will interfere with muscle synthesis/building. So take it on rest days, ideally 24 hours before exercising. Also I believe dosage is 1 gram.

I have PCOS, I quit the pill this year. I take the German Ovasitol they sell here in Europe & Berberine (400mg) twice a day, after meals. This is my second month. Acne has decreased considerably, less hair in the drain & I notice my hair isn't oily at all anymore. Not sure yet if it will help me have regular cycles, but definitely helps me block excess testosterone and my body uses glucose better.
So if you've PCOS and you want to stop depending on the pill to keep your PCOS in check, give those two supplements a try. They don't work for everyone, but the do work for MOST women.

My doctor put me on metoprolo for blood pressure and I have a-fib as well. My heart rate dropped to 30bpm. Not good since the brain is deprived of oxygen. Looked up natural blood pressure meds and aged garlic and Berberine popped up. Ordered both and looking forward to reaping the benefits. It appears berberine has multiple benefits and I appreciate this informative video.

Dr.Berg, I ask my doctor about berberine. Her response was there's no natural way to cure diabetes. Her quick attack and tone were enough for me to make up my mind to go natural with (berberine) continue with IF and a low keto crab diet.
I'm so glad I discovered your channel, Dr. Berg. Thank you.
Well, I order Berberine after getting the results from a highly recommended company.
My question is what should be the dosage to take and should I continue taking Benfotiamine?

Dr Berg I’ve been doing Keto since Jan 27th,2022. I also test my glucose and ketone levels daily and recently more. At first I saw good fasting blood glucose levels and then I started seeing higher fasting levels. Now I am seeing the elevated levels almost all of my readings. 100-120 fasting and even after hours after I have eaten. When I first began I lost 20 lbs within 2 months and now a lb the last month. Would having hypothyroidism cause this? And if I had a low but within their ranges being normal would berberine help me? What do you recommend the dose of berberine to be? Thank you for a reply!

I've started to take berberine. 750mg 30min before meals. I've noticed it rises my fasting bloodsugar around +1.0 mmol.
I think it's because most of the berberine tablets have little bit of maize stracth in them and some stabilizing agents. That is why I don't take it in the morning anymore. If taken in the morning maybe we should take it same time as we eat to extend the fast?
Do other people have similiar experience? Whats your toughts?

Despite a great diet and lots of movement and all my bloodwork perfect (except glucose), My whole adult life I have had fasting glucose at about 100 and A1c at 5.7 (pre-pre-diabetes and I get polyps 3 to 5 every 3 years for the last decade. I also just found out I have the worst mutation for MTHFR. I am taking molecules that help with MTHFR but am also taking berberine. My thoughts are it could lower my glucose related bloodwork and help against polyps and perhaps colon cancer. Do you think that the MTHFR mutation could be the cause of both issues? thanks

I have a cast iron stomach but when I starting eating the mixture it tasted like acid. It took awhile to get the taste out of my mouth. When I dumped it in the white sink it stained the sink i had to use comet to get the stain out. Is bernberine that strong?

But now I know about Berberine my ears have pricked up! I'm interested! Is it easy to get hold of in the UK I wonder? I'll have to do some fishing around.

You don't know how freakin' long I've been waiting for you to make this video lol 😁😎🙏👍. Many thanks Doc :-) What brought me here was: I was just listening to Dr. Saladino on his hypothesis (based on studies showing a trend that supports it) of linoleic acid in relation to complex-1, most specifically, and how overconsumption of PUFA's (polyunsatured fats-- mainly in non-ruminants fed corn and soy, as you have thankfully always warned against consuming) apparently cause our fat cells to grow rather than to shrink, and he used a study showing Metformin's effects of modulating those negative effects of complex-1, of course as a means of allusion/example as to the biochemical action, recommending to avoid the drug and to increase stearic acid consumption from ruminants (specifically beef kidney fat).
So, as someone having tried Berberine (with positive results--i.e. it doesn't seem to be a plant-based toxin for me personally), knowing it is similar in function and benefits to Metformin (including in relation to complex-1 function based on a quick google search of a study done lol), I find this very interesting.
As a layperson, I hope I didn't butcher some of the science on that, but needless to say, this video by you helps to fill in some of the blanks in my still fitting the understanding together and in overall learning more. 🙏👍🔬

I am so anxious to start taking this, but I read that it chelates iron, and I am on iron to help with my Restless Legs Syndrome. I don't want to risk anything that is helping my legs, which I believe the iron is doing. However, the details about Berberine chelating iron mentions only excess iron in the liver nd kidneys, which is a good thing, apprently. But I feel like if it's binding with iron in those areas, how would it not also interfere with brain iron?

Sounds like it may benefit me. 🤔
I've got a problem with low calcium actually even tho I eat foods with calcium and supplement with 3x the amount of what my calcium + mineral supplement tells me to take.
That only got me up to a 9.3 actually when I cut out sensipar for my pth (it'll reduce calcium). Then my pth went up and my calcium went down to around an 8 when I start the medicine back.
My doctor and nutritionist can't tell me what to do and only point out I'm getting IV vitamin D and a calcium bath already. Neither knows anything about nutrition like doctor Berg and as usual I'm left to figure this out on my own. But hey frequent blood work comes in handy at least. I can try the berberine and see what happens.
on my own.

It’s basically the natural version of Metformin. Unfortunately it’s bioavailability/ absorption isn’t very good. About 80% is lost. Also it affects AMPK pathways like metformin and has the same negative side affects of turning off MTOR making it almost impossible to gain muscle and strength if you workout. Still, like metformin it’s life extension, cardiovascular and anti cancer etc benefits can far outweigh the bad. Just something to be aware of and make the best informed decisions for yourselves. If you can’t get a prescription for metformin, this is the best alternative so far besides fasting and a healthy diet/ lifestyle.

I've been taking "Betaine" HCL (not Berberine) with nearly every meal (600 to 1200 mg.) for nearly a year. It's been absolutely amazing for me. There are so many ways that I feel better in my body. My gut feels really warm and relaxed - like it's really, really happy. If I was allowed only one supplement, it would be Betaine HCL...by a long shot.

Thanks for all you do Mike. It is really appreciated by guys like me who don't really don't have the time to dive into research but still want to be healthy and vibrant into our future. I started really late and struggle with getting caught up as the damage was fairly significant. I feel like I am in a race to "beat the clock" if you will. It is working, but overall change is very slow. I feel much better in my 50's than I did in my 40"s thats for sure. We're getting there. Thanks

My thoughts are could it lower my glucose related bloodwork and help against polyps and perhaps colon cancer. Do you think that the MTHFR mutation could be the cause of both issues? thanks

Love this… have you considered the benefits of ginger? I was doing ferments, nuts and seeds as part of my keto diet. Thinking I was doing everything right, I found out it wasn’t right for my body, Then I had an onset of MCAS, leaving me to have a low histamine diet.
Both ginger and turmeric have similar properties. Ginger seems to have other benefit. I have been doing raw ginger microplaned into my hot water instead of tea or coffee.

this video is so in time! just ordered a few bottles of berberine.
I had a history dealing with IBS, tried so many different supplements, eliminating foods, cutting sugar, going vegan, fasting etc. I had a whole shelf with different supplements from iherb. At one point when I gave up, and started drinking the supplements just to finish them off, when I reached berberine, I really really started noticing the difference in my digestion. It's incredible. 8+ years battling with IBS, being afraid of food and get togethers, bloating, indigestion etc. For someone who's coming from a journey that long, I can totally recommend this supplement. also it really reduces cravings.
Although I realized not all berberine supplements are the same and work the same, the supplement from healthyhey really suited me. another thing that turned my life around in terms of digestion was Tibetan medicine.
happy healing!

For some, berberine (and metformin) causes diarrhea and can't be tolerated. Sounds again like a gut thing. I wonder if it's possible to enhance tolerability via probiotics or some other means?

I have your ProBio Supreme and Berberine. Just wondering, I have food sensitivities- no dairy, soy, gluten, nightshades, eggs, mushrooms, sugar cane… when I’ve eaten kimchi/ fermented foods and ACV I get super bloated so I don’t consume these. Why do you think this happens? FYI, if I eat the foods I avoid I get arthritis in my hands.

Hi, I started taking berberine to help with my insulin resistance. However, I developed an excruciating pain in my right shoulder and neck area. The pain stopped when I stopped taking berberine. I tried twice and same thing happened both times. Could anyone explain why this is? Is it muscular atrophy?

I make kimchi 3 x / year in a large batch. It’s really easy and sooooo yummy! . My kids eat it on veggies, meat and even pizza. .Lots of YouTube videos on how to make it in like 1 hour and it’s really so easy and good for you. Of course you can get it supplemented but once you try how yum it is you don’t need to!

I got the berberine HCL + alpha lipoic acid from Myoxiscience and it makes my pee smell terrible. Like REALLY terrible. I took some at 7pm and went to the gym at 5am and the lady that came in the bathroom after I got done nearly puked. She kept saying omg what is that smell? Wonder why this happening. Will it stop eventually if I keep taking it?

Excessive kimchi consumption correlates with increased risk of stomach cancer. Just be aware that many of these fermented foods can be very high in sodium, the likely culprit, so be moderate.

Unrelated question:
What is a normal A1C for someone who doesn't have Type 2 diabetes/insulin resistance? Particularly if they are doing healthy Keto?
There seems to be a lot of noise when I try and find that on the Internet. And the Medical establishment is like "your a type 2 Diabetic anything under 7.0 is fine." Which I think is horrible advice being fed to me by people following the ADA guidelines.

Great research, Mike. Sadly, I can’t tolerate Berberine at all, it slams my blood sugar so quickly and it goes so low so fast that my adrenaline kicks in. Too bad because it’s such a great herb.

I've been buying kombucha....but only using a small amount, with acv, lemon juice in a concoction =) I know the kombucha for the whole bottle has quite a bit of carbs, but I figure only a few TB each day is not a significant amount??? Is this a good thought??? I wish I could find one w/o sugar in it, as it seems to have fruit with them..the ones I have found.

Please could you do a short video on how to prepare your body to receive the Cov!d vaccine. To have the best defense against any negative reactions. I already do hot and cold therapy, Weight lifting, started Tabata, already Fat adapted, lost fifty pounds 2 years ago, currently sitting at my high-school/Basic Training weight. I plan not to be fasting maybe about 4 hours pre shot. Recommendations on vitamin C or other herbs, vitamins like Vitamin D etc would be helpful. My vitamin D was low years ago but now get more sun and take Cod liver oil. What to do post shot would also be helpful, i.e should I sauna? I'm guessing probably not but used to do it when feeling sinus problems in the past before a healthy diet. 57 years old, but it's just a number. Thanks in advance for considering.

Potent ferments are bad for histamine intolerant peeps as I’ve learned hard way. Can eat some ferments but kimchi has order magnitude of more histamine than is safe for sensitive people and others.
Need ferments to diversify microbiome. But balance is key, prebiotics, probiotics, ferments in balance.

as a holistic health care developer, berberine is not the long term answer. Yes, it does see result, so do many herbs that are bitter.
Even ancient chinese medicine textbooks warned about it, it will hurt your spleen, stomach and intestines if prolong using it. Signs like diarrhoea, gastric, and “wind” will build up in the body, ended up muscle pain. That is, it is still a drug.

I started berberine fir high blood pressure. My pressure reacts to foods i eat esp eating out or package freezer foods like lasagna etc going as high as 200/ 100. I keep clonidonexwith me at all times
I get ringing in the ears and my stomach feels like something is gnawing in it and tight like a rope pulled tight around my middle. I sometimes have to take extra blood pressure meds for a week until whstcever it is clears my body.. berberine actually has helped after using for 3 weeks. Also I feel so much calmer and relaxed feeling inside my body which I think is helping decrease cortisol. I take 500 mg a.m. and p.m. I love fermented foods but I think I have a histamine response to some of them so I dont eat it regularly. Usually only home prepared meals staying away from preservatives or added flavor enhancers .I ate a muffin one morning in a hospital Cafe and 2 hrs later my blood pressure was210/102
Does it help anyone else's blood pressure?

So does this product cure anything ? ... if it works so perfectly in so many other countries why not in America ? is it just interesting or can you guarantee it cures something ? ... your product promos are blatantly amateurish ... all you have is more links below ... do you cure anything ? if not , why bother ? ... amazing how you get all the angles covered if none of the stuff actually works, which seems to be the case ... all of you should just admit you`re just wasting ppl`s time ... get a real job ... you know nothing, you guarantee nothing, you don`t take responsibility for anything you say ... stop confusing the naive and go away
