You probably know that most tissues in your body regularly replace their cells with new ones. Different organs need their own time to renew completely. And some tissues don't replace their cells at all. But have you ever wondered where the dead cells of your body end up?
Dr. , a Japanese cell biologist, spent years studying how human cells get rid of their waste. If this process in the body doesn't work correctly, a person can develop type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, some age-related diseases, and even cancer. And it turned out that when you fast, your cells live longer and produce more energy!

Nobel laureate Yoshinori Ohsumi shows his medal after an award ceremony in Stockholm on Dec. 10, 2016. Ohsumi was awarded the Nobel prize in physiology or medicine for elucidating "autophagy," an intracellular process that degrades and recycles proteins: By Kyodo/Associated Press/East News, https://www.eastnews.ru/pictures/pict...

SUMMARY:
- The first person who discovered autophagy was Belgian biochemist Dr. Christian de Duve. For this discovery, he got the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1974.
- Surprisingly, studies show that they still have approximately the same amount of proteins and carbohydrates in their digestive system as they would if they ate animal protein.
- The body can use its own protein in the form of dead and damaged cells and bacteria which have been previously stored away.
- If your natural recycling mechanism doesn't work, damaged cells and their parts start to accumulate in the body. And it ends up unable to neutralize cancer cells and cells infected by dangerous viruses and bacteria. As a result, this can lead to various serious illnesses.
- Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi found out that autophagy gets more intensive when the body is undergoing some stress. Such stress can be fasting, calorie restriction, or even starvation.
- In all his studies, Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi used starvation and fasting to encourage the body to break down toxic cells and get rid of all the garbage.
- Intermittent fasting, which is alternating the periods of eating and fasting, can help your body to clean itself. Besides, it can help you to lose weight and speed up your metabolism.
- If you're a newbie in the world of fasting and the practice looks a bit intimidating, start with skipping your meals. In general, it's enough to skip one meal a day to boost your metabolism and trigger cleansing processes in your body. Just remember that if you've skipped a meal, you shouldn't overeat at the next one.
- One more interesting conclusion you can draw from this research is that, despite what some people think, vegetarians don't suffer from a lack of animal protein. They just get it in a different way.

2 years ago i did 3 months intermittent fasting along with low /zero carb , I had unbelievable results. My mother couldn’t almost recognize me. Look younger, much stronger, lost weight and increased muscles, didn’t need to sleep more than 5/6 hours a day. I felt like a Superman. I am going back to that style again now.

For those considering to start a fasting lifestyle: I have began this journey myself 2 years ago, and I found out that adhering to a low carb diet significantly reduced how often I felt hungry, making the whole fasting thing far easier to accomplish. At least to me, eating refined carbs (flour, sugar, fructose) increase my appetite a lot and makes me crave for food really hard.

i'm on day 5 of fasting. the first day is the hardest to get in my opinion and then it's still tough to keep up until day 3. ive done fasting before and i've survived a 14 day water fast. it's probably easier if you live alone, because you don't have to see others eat or smell the food. for me i have a big family in a small house, but i still do it by staying out of the kitchen and not looking at the food. i hope everyone trying to do a fast can get some motivation from this.

I do a 36 hr water fasting twice per month (every Ekadashi period in the Hindu calendar). All other days I practice the 16/8 window fast where I eat during an 8hr window and fast for 16 hours. I never eat 4 hours before bed time, so bed time being 10PM, my last meal is at 6PM.

Watching this while having the first day of fasting in my entire life! Being chubby/overweight most of my life, I never thought it was possible, until I heard about it's benefits and now reading Dr Jason Fung's book. it should help me end up with my insulin resistance and sugar-dependency. I'm confident it will work :-)

One-Day-Starvation... what a funny word creation. Shows how wrong we are in our perception of nutrition habits.
One day without eating is a lot of things, but surely not starvation. 😁

Great video! I have been eating One Meal A Day (OMAD) for almost 2 years (22 months). I lost a 31 pounds in the first 3 months and I have kept it off ever since. I started at 176 pounds and now I weigh 145 pounds. My waist went from 34" down to only 28". It was the best thing that I have done for myself. I own a restaurant and I share my experience with as many people as I can. I have hit my goal weight so I don't do OMAD to lose weight, I do it for autophagy. I feel and look better than I did when I was 21. I get so many people who want to debate with thinking that I'm starving myself. They have no idea what autophagy is. The next person who wants to debate with me I will send them a link to this video.

Finally a reason NOT to eat protein! I've been vegan for many years and so tired hearing "you need protein". During the years when I didn't care about protein intake (I like many kinds of veggies, but not so hot on legumes), my protein level from the physical exams was ALWAYS fine all those years. Nobody suspected I was vegan. That's when I thought maybe I just didn't need to eat that much protein. However, during the recent months, I started working out so I made an effort to eat more legumes. Then my body start feeling wrong. More minor health issues like skin condition, joint pain, constipation. Thank you for posting this video! Now I stop forcing myself to eat protein!

As a 66 yr old Catholic, fasting starting at about seven years old was common. Eat dinner Saturday night. We never had snacks or pop anytime. Sunday we went to Mass & if you ate the Eucharist, it was on a clean empty stomach. During Lent we also fasted for spiritual reasons. It is not uncommon for us to fast anytime of the year. The people of India, Native Americans also fast spiritually.

I am vegetarian, and I have been practicing 16/8 fasting about 9 months now, it really improved my health. lost about 20LBs. My cholesterol numbers dropped into normal level now. At the beginning it was really hard but after 3 to 4 months it became super easy, and I don't feel hungry for about 16-18 hours. IF worked as a miracle for me.

I usually try to do a 5-day water fast once a year. For this year's fast, I noticed I had a very swollen tender lymph node in my armpit no other symptoms, just the lymph node so I started my fast and within 3 days it was completely shrunk down to where I could barely feel it. So it definitely helped my immune system. I will still be getting the lymph node checked out though just to make sure there's no other underlying issues. But I thought that was an interesting result.

Good vid, I have 2 additions / corrections tho:
1: Juice breaks your fast, as it triggers a metabolic response (because it contains calories). You can, however, have a small amount of salt (preferably sea or Himalaya salt) during a water fast to replenish electrolytes (salt doesn't have calories)
also, some people would say you can have anything that helps with being in a deeper fasting state (these are: black coffee without anything added, water with apple cider vinegar, green tea (use a blend without fruits or berries in it), cinnamon in your drinks and a small amount of lemon juice)
2: if you do alternate day fasting, you should only have the 500 calories if you won't eat for OVER 24 hours. Meaning you go for a full day of the week without food, as well as up to breakfast the next day (and from dinner the previous day), in which case you would be fasting for around 32 hours. You should have the small meal all at once tho if you can and not spread out, as to allow your body to reduce insulin levels to baseline for as long as possible. Also, the 500 calories is not leading. You can have 1/4 of what you consume on your non-fasting days. If that's only 1200 calories, you should not consume more than 300 on fasting days. But if you normally need more than 200, you can have more than 500.

Been intermittent fasting almost a year now on a 21/3. I've never felt better in my life. I enjoy foods I love in reasonable ways, maintain a healthy weight, train regularly, and look younger than I did 5 years ago. If anyone is considering an easy to adhere to lifestyle change to boost not just your fitness, but overall health...I couldn't recommend intermittent fasting more! Do research and learn more thru videos like this and give it a shot...its easy and effective I promise!!!

I intermittent fasting or as they said in video, window fast every day. Started with 10 hour eating window and have condensed it to 4-6 most days. Once a month I throw in a 24+ hour fast and love it. I've lost 50+ lbs went from a tight 38" waist to loose 33" waist size, have more energy, better skin and mental focus. I also noticed I send less money on food which helps be buy better organic or grass feed choices which further the health benefits. Making this life style change has be one of my best decisions ever.

This was a really good introduction to fasting and food restriction. My only criticism is that the video clips you chose shows people eating fruits and simple carbs like bread and pasta. I cannot stress enough how important it is what you eat when you actually come out of fasting. You need to load up on vegetables (squash, tomatoes and potatoes are NOT vegetables), especially green leafy ones in order to supply your body with the essential micronutrients, particularly minerals.

I thought/felt to begin intermittent fasting couple years ago
Works great for me I'm not a strict time person,
I just enjoy NOT eating after 6/7pm but hey on times it can be earlier/later
Same goes for breaking my fasting 11am/12 on times that can also change.
What I enjoy more than anything is how brilliant and aware my body is to what I choose to take in.
Oh my, an occasional late late meal, can change the feel of an entire day after...sluggish, foggy feeling not as bright as I believe myself to be...ha ha
But it's a fab part to my personal research, what feels fab for me.
I hope all others own and enjoy their journey with foods
I'm a vegan gal...who loves mostly RAW fruits and veg, I do occasionally cook.
Have a lovely journey with food.

I typically fast for 5-7 consecutive days each month. I typically only feel hunger for the first couple of days. After that, it's just a waiting game. The reason I fast for so long is because long fasts like that stimulate the production of a massive dump of stem cells. So, not only do you have a full week of nonstop autophagy cleaning out your body of old and damaged cells, but the following week you get flooded with stem cells to rejuvenate your body. I feel like Captain America during the week after a fast. It's AMAZING.

I'm into 18 to 24 hours fasting everyday, with some breaks on special occasions where sumptous foods are served. I started with the 12-12 duration. I fast even on days when I hit the gym for at least 1 hour of intense workout (irregularly, BTW). It has been 4 years. I'm 52, but I feel and look younger, modesty aside. At 1.78 meters, my waistline is 30 inches, going 29. BP, blood sugar, etc. all normal. All I'm saying is: I.F. works. One important bonus: you learn self-discipline.

I do the 8/16 fast, where I only eat between 10:00 a.m and 6 p.m. I find that it's a LOT easier than I thought it would be. I just need to make sure I consume enough calories during those eight hours, which is harder than you might think since I feel full after even small meals. So I have a snack every two hours, and as big a lunch as I can handle. I also drink a lot of water at night, which helps me feel full.

I do 16/8 almost every day, sometimes it's more like 15/9, due to getting home a bit later than I should from work or smth, but not a big deal, I also now do 24h fast every sunday noon to monday noon. Been doing this for a while now and feel great. Weight is under control, need less sleep etc. That's with other lifestyle changes included, making one change for the better usually motivates you to make more positive healthy changes, it's like a snowball effect. This, imo, is the easiest one to start with, doesn't really cost you anything etc.

Been playing around with fasting for about a year (16/8) and a few months ago I decided to just push it and just eat once a day which is probably the best decision I ever made, I dropped about 30 lbs. and I never felt better, my question is can I do this long term? Any bad side affects to this?

I started restricting calories and fasting everyday - the equivalent of one meal or nothing - and doing yoga everyday after I put on like 50+ lbs in a bad relationship. The pants I used to wear aren't just loose, they fall right off. But because I work out, I'm not skinny. I'm quite muscular. And my skin is clearer. I rarely wear foundation now. I cut back a lot on sugar and try to avoid greasy food because my stomach can't handle it. My body protests if I eat junk. I just don't feel like my body needs the amount of food I used to eat. I'm not strict or anything. If I'm hungry, I eat. If I want ice cream, I eat it. I just don't eat a lot and I'm good for awhile.
My people used to fast for long periods of time and didn't have dairy or fine sugar or refined carbs up until a couple centuries ago. I think genetics plays a huge role. I mean, that why I'm lactose intolerant and diabetes is ravaging my people. So if my body is set up like that, I think I'm meant to calorie restrict and fast. I don't move my entire community partway through the year, so I don't need to bulk up on food the way they did. I live everyday like their summers, easy, so I should eat like that. I think eating to suit our individual needs is important.
One of the reasons Europeans called my people savage was that they didn't eat 3 square meals a day. When asked when they eat, they apparently said, "When I'm hungry". I totally agree with that mindset.

Well put together and clear, thank you. I particularly like the idea of having a good breakfast followed by the 24-hours after that. Obvious, really but it had just never occurred to me. I have tried it and discovered the whole 24-hours without food thing far less daunting, especially if you push breakfast up to 11am or even later.
Just a small point. I thought that the 24-hour-fast WAS a water-only-fast. You can't seriously be recommending 24-hours without water? I would have thought this was dangerous? What does anyone else think?

I fast 24 hours two times per week. On fast days my lunch is the last meal of the day and I break the fast around lunch time next day. It is surprisingly easy to do once you accept a few stomach grumbles. There is a lot of scientific (and religious) documentation of fasting. Unfortunately it is oftentimes put in a bad light by research sponsored by food companies. All I can say is follow the money and give it a try...

Fasting is a very powerful tool to fight many diseases. I have a restricted window of eating: first (healthy) meal at 1pm and the main meal at 6pm. I feel great, lots of energy in the morning. No hunger whatsoever! My body has more time to repair. Also once a month I do a 2-day dry fast for more cleanup. Also here: no hunger or thirst, and I feel like Superman afterwards.

I found renewed desire to be healthy , get fit as in my youth but at 62 I need to take it slow but sure. I used to eat and lift weights and never miss a meal when young then not for years , now I feel better because I do not eat meat except some fish but am now considering and will become vegan because I care.

I do all of these fasting techniques. The easiest fast is while you sleep and then skip breakfast. I can do a 16 to 20 hour fast simply by having my last snack at 10 pm , sleep as normal , then skip breakfast. At this point I have options.
I can stop the fast at 12 hrs - 10am - or continue out to 2 pm - 16 hrs.
At 2pm I may feel inspired and go for 20 hrs - 6pm.
I found once I get to 20 hrs of fasting , sometimes I'm not hungry ; infact I get giddy. At this point going beyond 24 is easy - 10pm.
I find I do a 12 hour fast everyday.
By the way - I used to weigh 300 pounds. Now I weigh a very comfortable 219 and ware skinny jeans.
I became vegan for 18 months ; this is when I gained control of my eating. But it's understanding glutin-free that makes all the difference. NO BREAD is the easiest diet.
I eat meat when I crave it - but I'm super strict about wheat.

I've been practice fasting every now and then for about 10 years. Sometimes I'd select a day to fast, or go dinner to dinner. These days I follow 16/8 every day, not having breakfast but once every month or so I skip lunch as well. I love it. It really resets everyone.

I am 75 and have done some fasting for Autophagy. 1,2,3 or 4days. My energy level actually gets attention from my peers. I feel great 👍 but my Dr. is mad at me because I don’t use or need any medication 💊 anymore. 😇

I just about to end a 28 day fast. (I am at day 28).
Result loss of 15,69 kilos or a BMI from approx 29 to just below 24.
Right now I’m tired and exhausted and lot of things have happened in my body during the fast.
Excited how the coming weeks and months will work out ...

I learned of IF and dived in with an extended water fast. Aiming for a week, made it 3 days. Wish video covered this.
One thing I DO know: that 2,000 calorie one day and 500 the next is a recipe for failure for most .... or maybe just me. I work better in unbroken streaks. One slip usually leads to a long disappointing slide, although mastering self-criticism helps turn the tide.
And of course food is not a zero-tolerance addiction, only harm reduction is possible.

I sure wish I'd started earlier, but at least I started daily Intermittent Fasting the last 2 years with 1-1.5 very healthy nutrient dense meals/day. With daily IF I've continued to lose another 25-30 lbs that I couldn't lose before. I had dropped from 230 to 200 but couldn't lose any more til daily IF, now I'm finally down to 170+ with only another 15 or so to go! I waited too long to start & became Diabetic (type 2) but with daily IF my Hgb A1c is all the way down to 5.3 (normal!). I believe in IF!

I've started doing the 16:8 fast once I had an appt for high liver enzymes with my hematologist . He told me the basics and that I could live longer and feel better if I reduced my sugars and gave intermittent fasting a shot. I tend to give doctors that treat cancers and blood disorders more credit with information that is cutting edge. I feel less depressed now after 3 months of doing this. I'm losing wait. I don't starve myself. I just cut breakfast into brunch. And I'm even finding that I graze less by eating a big lunch, tiny snacks and a small dinner. Just be careful when you have blood sugar issues. The first week I got moody and woozy before my first meal of the day. The good thing is you can find apps and websites to help you with any kind of fasting. You can find many apps that have timers and calendars to help you make it a habit. I feel so much better. I also have a cousin in the army who does it and he looks amazing. He says he feels less achy to.
That being said my father has eaten 3 square very healthy meals a day for decades and he's the healthiest person I know. And not just for 67. The man still runs a few times a week and he's fast. I'll make a channel soon about the health habits of my family. We are very invested in prevention in my family.

In Ayurveda one should only consume food in Sun Cycle, it is said our digestive fire starts with sun rise, it peaks at noon and end with sunset. So it is preferred to eat medium portion at morning, big one at noon and low before sunset.

Helpful video. It explains why fasting cleans up the body well. Like bringing out the trash and clean the house.
18 hour fast is very easy. Eat at 12:00, then eat at 18:00, which gives us 18 hours of fasting till the next day ;-)

Autophagy onset speeds up with fasted exercise. It’s easy to fast after a week or 2 after giving up breads and sugar.
I do intermittent/time restricted eating most days. I do 1 24 hr fast a week and a 48 hour fast about every 6 weeks. I can honestly say that I am in the health I have ever had.
Moles and loose skin disappears quickly. I lost 25% of my body weight and have never been stronger or fitter.
It takes about 18 hrs of fasting to get to the start of autophagy, sooner if you work out fasted. At 3 days fasting, autophagy drops off sharply, mouth weight loss speeds up.
Intermittent fast for awhile before doing a longer fast.

In Ancient India, fasting for a whole day was necessary in a week.
Even now I see my parents doing fast for Monday every week. They tell me it's necessary for body and it boosts metabolism. They do only drink water and milk that fast day. I was glad to know the real reasons behinds that fast which my parents are doing without knowing proper reason, as they were told to do by there parents.
But I can't resist even a single time meal. I tried many times but can't resist.

Intermittent fasting has changed my life. I've lost significant weight in the midsection and feel great with amazing energy and mental focus.
I only eat between 12 and 6.
I eat lunch, dinner no snacks and water only. I cheat only one day a week usually Friday.
Diets are a pain and can be expensive. I should have tried intermittent fasting years ago.

Just finished an 11 day water fast. Day 12 was juice. Days 13-17 were reintroduction on fruits, vegees, then grains. Lost 27 pounds during that period. Ate plant-based no salt, no sugar, no oil diet for two weeks. And now am doing intermittent fasting 16 hours fast/8 hour feeding and remain on non-SOS (salt, sugar, oil) regime. Have lost total of thirty pounds in 29 days. So much energy on intermittent fasting schedule and losing from 1/2 to 1 lb a day. 100 pounds to go. Feels great. Prolonged water fasting is a life saver🙂

I've started 16-8 about 2 months ago. Actually I didn't change anything in my diet (maybe I eat less) except I have this 8 hour time window, but what I've noticed that nothing has changed. Maybe I've lost a couple of kilograms, but that's it. Probably my blood sugar is still high, because after I eat I have a little headache and dizziness. Maybe 1 and a half months is not too much, but if this will be the case after 1 and a half months more I will assume that IF is only effective if you reduce carbs, sugar and calorie intake...which is of course understandable...but if you reduce these thing then it doesn't matter when you eat throughout the day.
But in this case I have a question: What is the point of doing IF?

Orthodox christians have more than 100 days of fasting during entire year (Great Easter fasting 40 days, Christmas fasting 40 days, and two small fastings around 15 days). This means eating only plant origin food, and sometimes fish. Also many days of fasting is on water (not using anything with oil). Also, besides this days every wednesday and friday is fasting day. And we do it for 2000 years...

Longer I watch this video, the more it becomes the game of "spot the error", so many errors... e.g., the increase of the nitric oxide production in the arteries has more to do with the food you ate before you started fasting, than the fasting itself. Most of the people's diets contain a lot of compounds, which cause inflamation in the arterie lining, such as saturated fats, trans fats or free radicals such as oxidated cholesterol, which reduces NO production. Once you stop insulting your arterial tissue with these harmful compounds, it recovers and resumes the NO production. So many errors... you can do better guys.

In India we Sanatan Dharmi regularly practice this in real time. Normally twice in month, during day time we take little fruits, and for dinner light food grain. During monsoon season, this fasting is more and is correlated with some auspicious days like Krushna Janmashtmi. Thnx for sharing the logic behind our ancient culture.

All these strategies that you are sharing are being followed in India from since few hundreds of years..
We have particular days for Fasting called as Ekadashi - falls once in 15 days Depending on the moon's waxing and waning cycles.
People also choose to have a particular day of a week to fast.
Do explore on this.. There's much more deeper dimension to this than just autophagy.
Unfortunately, trying to adapt the western culture, everyone here are forgetting such many other practices that were a part of our daily lives and had a direct impact on our well-being are being forgotten.
Next time if you come across any Indian ask him if his parents or grandparents did anything such as this.. The answer will be yes 99.999% times.

In simple terms have 2 meals a day . One at 9 am and the next at 7 pm in the evening. Its the best way to eat . It takes no effort . Have proper meals . Dont try to increase or reduce the quantity. You will lose weight feel better and be more energetic. I was able to lose 30 kg in 6 months . Just by following this . No food restrictions whatso ever . Just timing

My great-uncle starved for years during the Great Depression and WWII. For more than two full decades his most ardent desire was to fill his belly just once, and then die a happy man. He remained hungry for about ten years after the War. Then, in 1955, he vowed never to have an empty stomach again — not even for a moment. Since then he has been eating about a dozen square meals a day with regular snacking in between. When he isn’t eating, he’s smoking, drinking, or sleeping. He is also quite physically active, still slim, and generally in a foul mood — especially when hungry, which is practically always. He’s not choosy either; he’s got his favourites but he’ll eat pretty much anything. He is currently 102 and still very hungry...I guess he experienced enough autophagy during the lean years of his youth to last him a couple of lifetimes.

I have not lost weight at all last year and I have not gained weight also. Iam overweight at 75 kgs. After how many hours of fasting do autophagy starts.? I do not eat carbohydrate like rice, bread. I eat carbohydrate like 75 grams of bread or rice. Once a week quite rarely once or twice a month. I am a type 2 diabetes. What should I do to lose about 10 kgs?

i'm on day 5 of fasting. the first day is the hardest to get in my opinion and then it's still tough to keep up until day 3. ive done fasting before and i've survived a 14 day water fast. it's probably easier if you live alone, because you don't have to see others eat or smell the food. for me i have a big family in a small house, but i still do it by staying out of the kitchen and not looking at the food. i hope everyone trying to do a fast can get some motivation from this.

The important part missing here is what Insulin does to your body. All this fasting does not work, if you stick with carbs and sugar addiction. Trying to fast and loosing wight is a torture, if you don't remove carbs from your diet. Something also not mentioned here, consuming high level of proteins is similar to eating sugar. Your liver makes sugar out of proteins.
From personal experience, switch to Keto for at least 3 weeks, fasting becomes very easy and the cravings for food, after loosing wight go away. If you stay addicted to sugar while fasting, you will gain all the wight back.
Once you happy with your wight, feel freed to choose any kind of diet you like.

I have always had a very quick metabolism. I can eat what I like when I like and I don't put on weight.
(for all who say...."lucky you" It also means I lose weight and struggle to put it back on. I also have hypoglycemic "episodes") My point is, does this mean that my body goes into autophagy quicker than normal because it "starves" at a quicker rate?

How does this process change when someone works out or if they have a very active job. For example, a person who is on their feet 8 hours a day and walks for most of it. Skipping a meal is very tough and not to mention if someone wants muscle definition then reducing your meals will definitely eat up muscle mass.

With proper control and manifestation, this discovery of Autophagy can be of wonderful contribution to good health and well-being... too much of it I think, is what we can see in the poorest of the poorest communities, where not by their choice they had to suffer long term hunger and as you can see their pictures of these unfortunate people, they are skin and bones... a proof to me of the nature of Autophagy uncontrolled.

Having now listened to this video second time, there is a serious contradiction with other videos about how AUTOPHAGY might work in dealing with cancer . This video says at one point that it may PROMOTE cancer cell production whereas in many other videos other doctors have said it can CURE cancer if you fast long enough...as discussed in the case study published by DR. ALAN GOLDHAMMER
So, this must be cleared up on our beautiful Internet exchange venue.
Can anybody clarify which proposition is correct ? Does AUTOPHAGY help or hinder in dealing with cancer ?

3 years later, the nutritional research which Ohsumi laid the groundwork for is all but forgotten by the public in favour of political veganism which promotes a dietary pattern dependent on an uninterrupted supply of low quality nutrients. Autophagy is, in context, a dangerous experiment on the human physiology where eating berries and fruit is the de facto standard of healthy living.

I read through the comments that every religion has it's own way of fasting, for example I'm orthodox and we should fast Wednesday and Friday every week. I was ignoring this, I thought it has nothing to do with health....and here I am realising that fasting is the best healing tool for human body, it's a pity that society nowadays does not promote this, instead they push you take medicine for everything. In Romania for example there are pharmacy's EVERYWHERE! one next to other...it looks like it's a very profitable industry.
We need to take care of our self so we won't end up on their hands....sorry for my English.

So, too much autophagy may have undesired effects in cancer where autophagy can promote the growth of tumor cells and the resistance of anti cancer drugs? 🤔 I would rather take my chances with autophagy over Anti cancer drugs any day. Autophagy kicks anti cancer drugs to the curb. My guess they had to word this way, for if they did not, they would be out billions of dollars in anti cancer drugs.

Autophagy would have been the natural order for primitive man when we were hunter-gatherers. Food wasn't always available so a natural fasting would have taken place until the next hunt was successful and the high fat feast was on! Modern man has become so lazy with 24 hour drive throughs, you can just see the affects in the US and it's spreading across the planet.

Anyone have more info on how fasting could cause chemo resistance or encourage cancer growth?? I have read it’s the opposite so I’m confused by that.

This matter was told by Indian Hindu ancestors in vedic period. that is 'EKADHASI FASTING', this occurring in every 15 days, i mean 2 days in a month. Indian master's don't need world recognition and personnel achievement ,they just want peoples happiness , today's modern world is running for that. i think world must know about Indian cultures those are good and healthy for today ' s life style. i don't want to criticize anyone ," this man did a great job" but iam just saying about my great culture.

Fasting is not always good because your body needs glucose. In order to self produce glucose, your body has to go through gluconeogenesis and produce acetone. Acetone is a chemical which is not good for your body.

I am going to start a fast from now. I have shingles really bad for 4/5 weeks. I am not happy taking painkillers or any meds if I can avoid them! This viral infection is attacking me from my inside and now I need to try to eradicate this as I have read that some people can have ongoing pain with this shingles virus. I don't want to be one of these people and feel this is worth a pop. I am feeling so positive about this and will update in a few weeks - see how it goes.

This is a method used by Muslims for centuries. It is called "Oruç" means fasting. Today, because people like to live comfortably, it is a method that has disappeared from our lives, but is culturally living.

Ahhh,,, very interesting? Getting older and watching our bodies "breaking down" to enter continuing "death cycle" hoping to add minutes to life....
Our "doomed to death" physiology is fascinating!!
A conscious being understanding that existence is held by a thread not knowing where, when, how, and why we are is stronger than tangible self.

Eastern religions mainly Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism advised fasting from thousand of years primarily for spiritual progress.
Mental and physical benfits are just secondary outcomes of it.
Mainly in Hinduism even now most of the people fasted once in a month compulsorily called 'Ekadashi'.
Ancient Rishis, Seers and Spiritual Masters knew this scientific aspect way before this recent discovery.

Thanks almighty ALLAH You have really bestowed upon US Muslim especially, made mandatory ONE Month fasting,(the Month of Ramadan) , through Prophet Muhammad SAW, which was revealed to Prophet Muhammad SAW 1400 years ago, now it is recently discovered by scientists just tow years back . It is a clear signs for NON-MUSLIM as well to think WHO is the Sustainer, The Creator of the Universe and to Whom we return to and on the day which we all will be resurrected again......May ALLAH SWT guide US all in the right direction .Ameen Ya Rabul AALAMEEN.

This is why ALLAH told us to fast for a month of Ramadan. I think when a scientist descovers such kind of things he must revert to Islam after discovering such a great sign of ALLAH which he granted Muslims.. Only then he deserved to call a great and wise scientist .. When he found truth he bows down towards his Creator

Autophagy is the natural cellular recycling process that rids our body of old or malfunctional protein. This sets in motion the process of rejuvenation as our body rebuilds new proteins to replace the old ones. Autophagy is a powerful method of healing and is best activated by fasting. Started fasting worked up to one meal a day went from 240 to 190 at 5’11”. I turn 60 in a month my goal now is to get to 185 the same weight I came out of high school at. Doing this for a year with no problem I think proves to me I will do this for the rest of my life. Could not have done it without you and Dr. Ekberg love him as well. Thanks Again

Jason... I don't know if you read these comments, but your videos have helped me a lot, and allowed me to lose a bunch of weight and get off insulin.
I did have a significant medical issue this last week, that was related to my super low carb diet. I was going a bit crazy with sodium, adding salt to my eggs, and eating a lot of sausage. Also, a few spoons a day of salted natural peanut butter and cottage cheese, both of which are high sodium foods.
It seems that all of this sodium made my BP spike and caused weird headaches.... Now that I've cut back the salt, and unfortunately started taking 40mg Lisinopril qd, things are getting under control... hopefully I can d/c or at least reduce the Lisinopril soon.
Just a heads up to people who are going low carb... watch the sodium!

I've watched dozens of videos and read lots of websites that talk about autophagy, but this had a great balance of talking about the details of different kinds of autophagy without going into too much technical details about things that a layperson struggles to understand. It would be great if you could follow this video up with a technique video -- i.e. HOW to fast to achieve different kinds of autophagy for different goals. Looking forward to the next video.

Thankyou Dr. Fung... you clear things up tremendously. My question is how easy is it to inadvertantly drop out of autophagy during a fast? I regularly fast for anywhere from 3 to 4 days up to 11 or 12 days and I feel amazing, have lost loads of weight and have 'cured' my painful wrist, thumb and left knee over the last 6 months. But, I drink one strong coffee in the morning, red-bush (rooibos) tea throughout the day and sip on 2 litres of 'Lo-Salt' water (KCl and NaCl) to stay hydrated. Has the coffee and red-bush (caffeine-free btw) been pushing me out of autophagy?
Perhaps someone here might shed some light on this for me... I'd be very grateful.

There should be a balance between breaking things down and building things up. That principle is applicable in biology and can be generalized to nearly everything in this world. Going too far to one extreme or another is the root of nearly all forms of dysfunction and unhappiness. Thank you Dr. Fung for being the foremost voice in emphasizing the need for such balance in our dietary habits way BEFORE it became the popular thing for diet gurus to advocate.

Very happy to share my experience....... Hope It may help someone who is looking for motivation..... Keep going with IF
Happy fasting ☺😄

Such an incredible bonus to fasting for weight loss. Would've liked to hear more specifics like how many hours you need to fast to get a good amount of autophagy. The app I use to track my fasting (fastic) says after 16 hours it begins, so I am I right to assume my normal 23:1 regimen is getting me autophagy every day? Lately I've been considering throwing in one or two 48-hour fasts per week since I am not hungry anymore, even at my mealtime. I enjoy eating a lot, but I don't have the physiological need after a 24 hr fast, it's all just for pleasure at this point. So why not try some 48 hour ones? Think I will skip my dinner tonight and see how it goes.

I love the way you broke that down. I'm 52 years old, 5 foot 1 and need to lose about 80 pounds. I started intermittent fasting about a month ago for weight loss. I haven't lost any weight yet but my fingernails are back to being hard and sturdy after constantly chipping and breaking for the last 4 years and my energy level has gone up. I was a junk food junky for years and thought i would feel like I was dieing from starvation doing the 16:8 fasting but that didn"t happen.

Really appreciated how mTOR and Insulin relate to protein and carbs respectively. When I was doing alternate day fasting I noticed that weight would steadily and slowly decline, then pause for a few days… while waistline seemed to shrink (but weight stayed the same). This cycle would repeat a number of time as I lost about 25kgs. So I’m wondering if the body has some mode whether it is burning autophagic debris or it is burning fat. Ideas?

Dr. Fung, I was having a terrible time with intermittent fasting. Every time I skip breakfast by lunch time my stomach hurts. This happened repeatedly. I figured that I just couldn't skip a meal. It doesn't work for me. Then, I discovered what the problem was. It wasn't the fasting that made my stomach hurt, it was the coffee. Even though I was skipping breakfast, I was still having a cup of coffee with heavy cream and butter. That helped me be full until lunch. But then my stomach would really hurt. I quit the coffee, now, no problem. I have no problem drinking water. Have you ever heard about coffee being an irritant when fasting?

I’m a big fan! I have a quick question…
Does autophagy stop if you consume a fat, like an avocado and or olive oil?
2nd, does it stop if you eat less than 20 grams of protein like 2 eggs with your avocado as a lunch before my normal OMADinner?
Thank you & keep up the great work!

Hello Dr. Jason, I have been following your Intermittent Fasting 16:8 protocol that 16 hours fasting and 8 hours eating window since 2019. According to another Fasting Expert, she said, quote "Yes, at 17 hours autophagy is slowly turned on and it will peak at 72 hours"
close quote, since my fasting hours is only 16 hours, which is short of one hour, Autophagy does not kick in at all, right? May I have your comment please.

From 2010-2011 i lost 75 kilos doing calorie restriction. Worst years of my life where i ended up needing b12 and iron injections and doc considered me borderline malnourished. Yes i lost the weight, but i was not functioning. Sleeping 10 h a night plus nap during the day. I got praise for losing weight, but when i tried to tell them i didnt feel better, in-fact i felt worse, i was looked at like I was stupid. Losing weight is “good for you”, right? My son told me i had slurred speech and at times i talked in slow motion. I did not notice this myself really. And now we are talking about my maintenance period AFTER i lost weight. I could after a year maintaining that new weight, STILL not eat more than 1300-1400 calories a day, without GAINING weight. I got fed up and started eating 1600-1800 a day, and felt better. But weight slowly came back even tho i still kept an eye on calories. I was convinced my body was trying to get back to my highest weight and sucked up ever calorie i ate. Watching Dr, Fungs videos put words and scientific explanations to what i lived through. 3 years ago when i started keto to try lose weight again, i felt like a new person. OMAD came naturally due to less hunger, and i loved my “keto brain” as i called it when talking about it with others. I felt creative again for first time in years. I had less pain in the surrounding tissue of my hip joint(which is crocked), so i take less pain medication. I always struggled with inflammation in that tissue being irritated when i moved too much. I dont need codeine daily anymore. I now and then take keto-holiday where i dont count carbs, but it doesnt take long before i want my keto-brain back. Its my default “setting” now..living keto lifestyle with OMAD. Carby days are rare, and only for special occasions. After watching most of his videos i am now experimenting with longer fasting, and i have yet to exceed 36 hours. But so far i love how it makes me feel. So for an over-eater, like i have been since childhood..this is amazing. Hard to believe this is ME living like that. Love it.

Macroautophagy starts within 30 minutes to an hour of starvation.
When do we starve?
In the intermittent fasting of 8-16. The macroautophagy starts within 8 hours if there are no snacks.
The chaperon mediated autophagy occurs during the 16 hours.
If you keep the 16 hours window including the sleep then the neurons are able to perform autophagy as well.

If autophagy peeks at 48 hours, then what happens during extended water fasting? Short term "starvation" will enable cells to dump their waste (intra-cellular action), but we know that longer term starvation can break down things like arterial plaques and also "remodel" damaged tissues (extra-cellular action). It would be great to get the whole spectrum of what mechanisms are active over these various "phases" of "starvation."

Thank you for all you do. I’m very susceptible to all variants of covid. I had the first strain (devastating), then delta, then all the omicrons. I find that fasting helps me recover very fast from the omicron variants. I usually start the day with a coffee and eat dinner only. Or I eat breakfast, skip lunch and workout while hungry. Working out while hungry has been the fastest way to lose extra pounds. I feel comfortable in a bikini now and I’m loving it 👍

Brilliant lecture and I love the drawings.
Seems that autophagy is a newish field for detailed research. Your comments regarding the possibility for cells, responsible for immune response, to be cleaned out while cancer cells may thrive as a consequence, is very interesting. Are there any studies which lead you towards that possibility? I would like to kill off the bad guys but not the good guys!
I have been following the work of Dr Walter Longo and his fasting mimicking diet. He also sees the benefits of autophagy and your lecture explains in great detail the mechanisms involved.

I've been on an 8/16 schedule for almost a year. Lost tons of weight (well, pounds anyway lol). Also, the weight loss has been synergistic with exercise and I have gotten into great shape at the same time. I am an avowed "breakfast skipper" and eat my first meal at 2:00 PM. I drink coffee all morning, also take NMN and other supplements. Last night I ate a big bowl of popcorn around 9:00PM and didn't have any problem sleeping on an empty stomach. You just have to make a rule for yourself not to eat anything before 2:00 PM.

Thank you so much Dr been for this detailed clarification of intermittent fasting. AT first when I began it, when you first talked about this 4 months ago, my body immediately was happy and went into the mode of eating at noon and then not wanting anything until about 7.
I did not know that I was not allowed to actually eat in between the first meal and the last meal but that was what my body wanted initially. MY body begin to shift after a couple months and I no longer felt simply the lack of desire to eat. SO I would take a sip of pineapple juice which I believe aids digestion and sometimes some fruit, although I actually never ate a proper meal in between the first and the last meal of the day. Of course the devil is in the details and now I know I better not sip or eat in between. OF course during the 16 hours stretch of no food I did sleep. I'm wondering how long one should sleep and maybe you will get to that but I'm guessing it's the usual amount of 7 to 8 hours.
THIS is my last stop in trying to get rid of the continuing Cascade of side effects from the vaccine which began about 2 months after the vaccine. I've gone through a series of side effects for 15 months & the last one now is my skin is breaking out. Initially about 4 months ago I had a series of four times when my body would turn red and heat up REALLY hot and the fourth time it was as if it was burning and I almost fainted. I thought --Boy, I hope this doesn't carry on. I was at home so that was good. I read later that other people have had this side effect so I did not feel as scared from what might happen if it carried on & worsened. Instead it switched to a second skin side effect which Sean has talked about: I felt like I was being bitten by ants or some type of teeny creature and yet when I looked, there was nothing biting me.
Recently that stopped and now I'm having the third skin side effect which I can only attribute to the Vax due to this series of things occurring to me. IT is a skin breakout. FIRST on my throat little bumps that had no color to them; then on my upper chest by my collarbone-- little bumps that had no color; and then a breakout of red bumps on my right side where my shoulder was and the collarbone and then it expanded to the left side so now my whole upper part of my body is covered with little bumps and they are visible especially on my left side of my shoulder and collarbone
AND here I'm going to Florida🌊🏖🌦☔ for vacation! I know I'm saying-- Cry for me, NOT don't cry for me Argentina-- but because of monkey🐵 pox, I worry people will think I have 🐒 pox which can begin as a rash! 😳
IT'S been a month and definitely is NOT 🐵pox so I'm hoping that people won't look🙈 very closely & it will start to fade & if I go to the ocean every day and immerse myself for at least 1 hour in the salt water🌊 it will finally start to heal.
I truly feel this is the third stage of the skin's reaction to the Vax & the body's way of detoxing.
BY chance, I came across a place in County Sligo, Ireland where you can get seaweed baths that drain your body of ALL toxins in a very gentle but aggressive manner. I am thinking of going there if I can't heal my skin problem and am unable to detox on my own. It will be very pricey but i truly want this poison out of me!!😫😤😵
I do think the fasting helps but having heard the first part now of your talk, I think I NEED to do what I was instinctively wanting to do 4 months ago which is to increase it to 24 hours and then 48 hours. I will say tho that my body-- unlike at the beginning of my intermittant fasting several months ago-- does not REALLY want me to go without food so long so it will be a little tricky.
I have taken the opportunity to write here on more than just fasting because I'm hoping someone else who has had the skin condition or knows of someone who does, can say-- DON'T worry, this too will pass and it is your body reacting to the Vax and trying to get the toxins that it created out of your body and this is the last step!
I live in Texas and all summer it was 107° F and my AC was not working so I would be sweating in a 95° F home and then when I went outside it was 107°F and with great humidity. SO at first I blamed my break out on the extreme heat this summer and then later I figured it was both the vax and the heat but now that it's cooled off, I think it's just the vaccine side effect.
SO m👼y blessed cool beens, if anyone knows of something similar, do tell. 🤗THX.
AND of course I thank our dear Dr Been for all the work he does and the fact that he actually cares about people who are trying to heal.🙏🌠

Doctor Been such wonderful information.
For someone to integrate autophagy into their lifestyle you must understand the mechanisms of satiety, the state of being full, and prolonging that feeling.
Current FDA guidelines on diet is calories in calories out model, whereas a better understanding would be the hormonal control of hunger and what to eat to prolong satiety without being hungry. The current MyPlate guidelines on meals eating will cause someone to fail on trying to practice autophagy. Hunger always wins.
Hormones like leptin, grilling PYY, insulin and others are more controlled by eating a higher fat and lower carb diet.
This would be a great follow-up lecture to this one you just gave.

What's the general timescale for autophagy? Various professionals have suggested 17 hours, 18 to 20 hours, 24 hours, some saying it can take days. Some even saying slight intermittent fasting can trigger autophagy.

I have been eating one meal a day for 3 years, occasionally I have a pie in the afternoon, otherwise no sugar, little fruit a ton of vegetables, pickles, eggs, beans, fish and wheat. That is what my body seems to love. I have no hunger; blood sugar seems to stay stable for 24 hours. I am 66 never been so healthy! So, the scientists just found this out, it has been known in the traditional health fields for hundreds of years. But I guess most of them were burnt at the stake.

As a coffee loving lacto-vegetarian I'm indulging the hot chilly and garlic saturated home grown chicory that supposed to promote health and prolong life span.

Awesome talk.
I want to try fasting to trigger autophagy to see if it helps with my vision, I have persistent floaters which I'm concerned might be the start of cataracs, I'm 43, pretty healthy, but need to cut out refined sugars. I'm willing to try anything to improve my vision. Might be a long shot, but have you seen any studies that suggest a benefit of this kind?

Dr., I saw a special on a man that was given a 500-calorie-a-day diet for several weeks. He had cancer and they"starved" cancer. Can you address this? I have done the 16/8 and my doctor was soooo excited about the results. Also during this time when I did start eating I got diarrhea, have you heard of this? It was like when I ate maybe the insulin output was too great to digest the food.

I have two questions/comments:
1. During autophagy when metabolizing fat, does the brain not need/prefer glucose, so is some fatty acid converted to glucose?
2. I have read a number of anecdotal accounts of how fasting cured or promoted healing from advanced cancer, but Dr. Been said fasting is contraindicated for cancer due to wiping out immune cells that were fighting cancer allowing it to proliferate.

I skipped this lecture because I didn't know what autophagy is, thought it was complicated microbiology or something lay people don't easily get into. I'm so glad I came back to check it out. Really interesting!!! Maybe add a lay-friendly word in the title - if there are no click baits that we all click 😆

Intermittent fasting, to renew and refresh the mitochondria, (I hear). Their are two supplements I've found that are supposed to renew and refresh the mitochondria, methylene blue was one. I forgot the other, berberine maybe. Or maybe D-Ribose. ALA (alpha lipoic acid) as well.

N of one comment 80 years and I Fast 72 hrs. My glucometer begins glucose drop and ketone rise at 35 hrs in. Evidently Dr Bosworth finds this common too . Great to know about night Autophagy. I am in great health no prescription still run on weekdays inside a gym where I sub ( retired biology teacher). I also do light weight upper body. Never had acetone phenomena but registering two above ketones common on feeding days and upto 5 on Fasting.

I dont think we recycle every protein in our body every 3 months, that doesn't sound right. It's almost true for red blood cells, but not at all true for hair cells for instance. And that would probably invalidate every stable isotope analysis of collagen.

People have been fasting for health and spiritual benefits from time immemorial, it's nothing new. it's often tied to religious practices, most of which are vanishing as the world becomes increasingly materialistic and atheistic. Most religions contain moral and physical practices that improve well being.

Dr Been is showing some weakness in his knowledge here. Autophagy from fasting has been studied for a long time and there are folks who practically base their careers on it. Autophagy in animals, especially animals with much faster metabolic cycles than humans (consider how many heartbeats a mouse/rat has). It may be quite a bit longer in humans to trigger autophagy. You might not even be in ketosis within 48 hours of fasting. By all means, if you're interested in this stuff for your health, go looking for more information and use this as a starting point, but don't just dive into 48 hour fasts (most people will struggle with that anyway) and don't necessarily assume you'll get the benefits discussed in animal models/studies within the same fasting window.

Dr Marshal..The confusing thing to modern Americans is that in English the suffix 'co' implies a kind of equality...So the way it is said is not correct for the full meaning you describe here. Abreviating when it comes to the Mother of God is probably a mistake in the first place.( and just a note two posts seem to have come together I see comments to dr Kool Bean under this too!)

Do cancer cells feed on ketones?
Previous studies indicate that unlike healthy tissues, cancer cells are unable to effectively use ketone bodies for energy. Furthermore, ketones inhibit the proliferation and viability of cultured tumor cells. I am a avid follower of your presentations and thank you for your work. However I felt very strongly that your comment regarding my statement above needs your investigation. However I realize your agreement with the statement could be very harmful to you relative to the big Pharma regime see Dr Burzynski Cancer Clinic. Bottom line cancer cells need glucose but cannot survive on ketones. Fasting is a successful therapy. Thank you again for your work

Yoshinori Ohsumi (大隅 良典, Ōsumi Yoshinori, born February 9, 1945) is a Japanese cell biologist specializing in autophagy, the process that cells use to destroy and recycle cellular components. Ohsumi is a professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology's Institute of Innovative Research.[1] He received the Kyoto Prize for Basic Sciences in 2012,[2] the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, and the 2017 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences[3] for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy.[4]
Biography
Ohsumi addressed at Gairdner Foundation International Award Ceremony (at the Royal Ontario Museum in October 2015)
with John Dirks, Kenjirō Monji and D. Lorne Tyrrell
Ohsumi was born on February 9, 1945, in Fukuoka. He received a B.Sci. in 1967 and a D.Sci. in 1974, both from the University of Tokyo. In 1974–77 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Rockefeller University in New York City.[1]
He returned to the University of Tokyo in 1977 as a research associate; he was appointed Lecturer there in 1986, and promoted to Associate Professor in 1988. In 1996, he moved to the National Institute for Basic Biology, Japan in Okazaki City, where he was appointed as a professor. From 2004 to 2009, he was also professor at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies in Hayama. In 2009, he transitioned to a three-way appointment as an emeritus professor at the National Institute for Basic Biology and at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies, and a professorship at the Advanced Research Organization, Integrated Research Institute, Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech). After his retirement in 2014, he continued to serve as Professor at Institute of Innovative Research, Tokyo Institute of Technology. Currently, he is head of the Cell Biology Research Unit, Institute of Innovative Research, Tokyo Institute of Technology.[5]
Christian de Duve coined the term autophagy in 1963 whereas Ohsumi began his work in 1988. Prior to that time, less than 20 papers per year were published on this subject.[6] During the 1990s, Ohsumi's group described the morphology of autophagy in yeast, and performed mutational screening on yeast cells that identified essential genes for cells to be capable of autophagy.[7][8]
In 2016, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy".[9][10] He is the 25th Japanese person to be awarded a Nobel Prize.[11] Ohsumi's spouse Mariko, a Professor of Teikyo University of Science, collaborated on his research.[12] She is a co-author of many academic papers with him.[13]
