This video is a summary of an important paper that blew me away.
Three of the leading causes of death:
• Heart disease
• Cancer
• Metabolic illnesses
With each of these causes of death, there is some type of dysfunction that destroys the mitochondria. The essence of the problem is an excess of oxidative stress and free radical damage.
Normally, the body protects against these things through its antioxidant networks. Glutathione has been considered the most important antioxidant. But, melatonin is even more powerful and effective than glutathione.
Benefits of melatonin:
• It’s a powerful antioxidant
• It’s 2x more powerful than vitamin E
• It triggers antioxidants like glutathione
• It promotes sleep
• It supports the immune system
• It has anti-cancer benefits
There are two forms of melatonin, one being subcellular melatonin, which means it’s inside the mitochondria. It’s there to help protect against oxidation and free radical damage in the mitochondria.
A lack of melatonin can:
• Affect your sleep
• Cause inflammation
• Cause you to lose your antioxidant protection in the mitochondria
• Lead to chronic degenerative diseases (especially of the brain)
The largest stimulus of subcellular melatonin is near-infrared light (NIR).
A few things that give off NIR:
• The sun
• Campfires
• Fire in a fireplace
• Candles
• Incandescent lights
• Infrared sauna
• Infrared lights and lasers
Being outside in nature and in the sun may be just as important as eating healthy. Infrared light also protects against UV radiation.
Being exposed to artificial lights (LED light and blue light) is a big cause of a deficiency of infrared light.
What you can do:
• Get outside in the sun
• Get a therapeutic near-infrared light
• Switch your lights to incandescent lights
• Have more fires or use candles

One point I wanted to clarify. I am not recommending taking melatonin supplements but instead triggering your mitochondria to MAKE its own melatonin. You do this with exposure to the infrared spectrum of light - sun, fire (campfire, candle flames, fireplace, etc.) or using some red-light therapy. AND start to restrict the blue light (computers, cell phones and artificial lights). When I personally take melatonin, my sleep sucks. Some people might sleep better with it but anytime you take a hormone the gland that produces it (hint, hint - pineal) doesn't have to produce anymore and the body starts depending on external sources. So, the best solution is to trigger the cells' ability to make melatonin itself.

Thank you Dr Berg. My husband got a very bad report from the doctor in December. He’s 78, I’m 67. I just ordered him an over $600. outdoor recliner so he can sit in the sun. My father’s favorite words were “go sit in the sun.” That was his answer to any ailment. He was 88 when he passed away. May the Lord bless you and keep you safe and healthy, in Jesus name. Amen

Amazing information! Adding sunlight to my health routine. They scared us with misinformation about the “dangers” of sun exposure as they did about fat-containing foods. Surprise, surprise, we’ve been once again duped. 😡

Back in 2020 march I started taking melatonin and was actively tanning outside while I was eating garlic (which also took care of the social distancing) in various forms. This was in the middle of the first wave when people were in ICUs and dropping like flies. I'm in my mid 50s, overweight and has asthma problems. When I caught the virus in that month, I had very minor symptoms for about 4-5 days and felt strong and healthy while doing those things. People should just listen to science and facts, the problem is too many people are scared into submission by the politicians and so called "experts".

My great grandmother is 97 years old, worked on a farm all her life, she never had any illnesses at all apart from a small issue with her eye 3 years ago. All she ate was flour based products. Some vegetables, some meat some dairy and green tea. Perhaps the sun is the most important thing after all.

There's no end to the benefits Eric brings to humanity. He's helped me return to health, increased my understanding of how our bodies work (and how we can assist it in it's repair missions), and helped me dial in my keto and fasting to be optimally affective. I went from an obese, chronically fatigued trucker to a healthy, ideal weight thanks to diet and regular strength training. He's literally a life saver. And as a side note, I went from having a 47 inch waist down to a 32 and have more energy and vitality than I did in my 20's. Thanks Dr. Berg, you're amazing !!

True! about being out in the sun........I remember a story about a cancer patient who were told that she only have months to live. She decided to stay live in their farm and did some gardening. She's outside almost everyday when the sun is up doing some gardening and now she's cancer free.......this only proves the theory Dr Berg.

I’m a night shift nurse and I’m thankful for all your wisdom sharing videos. I wanted to ask in behalf of all people working nights. Please don’t recommend us switching to work days. I accidentally found out that this keeps my GERD under control. I was waking up unable to breathe , suffering , I tried everything , I eat all the right foods mostly, but I still have flare ups. I also have bile stones. Anyway, I read a random comment on a video that led me to melatonin for GERD. I can now sleep laying down knowing I won’t wake up choking. Of course my doctor doesn’t agree. But I know it works.

Keep up the good work I enjoy listening to you I learn a lot

Dr. Berg, If I'm very lucky you will answer my question! I use a Charmed Far Infrared Heating Pad: Mini Mat with Amethyst and Tourmaline Crystal Radiant Heat Therapy ..... I call it a far infrared mat... I see that NEAR-INFRARED is best for increasing melatonin (although I'd never give up my FIR mat.) I'll be looking into the therapeutic near-infrared light. Question: Is it possible that the far-infrared heat coming from the FIR heating pad would fill the bill for triggering your mitochondria to MAKE its own melatonin?
Also wishing you would to do a video to help us out with the science of "infrared." What's "near"? What's "far"? What's heat" What's "light." What are the "best uses" for each? Whatever we should know to act responsibly and knowledgeably. Not asking for specific recommendations on products.
You really keep us on track which is so needed in these tough times. 🍎 An apple for the teacher.

I advise everyone at work to watch your videos. Most of my coworkers are 10- 15 years younger than me. So many of my coworkers have experienced cancer, pick up colds/flu easily. Others have painful joint issues, requiring steroids/knee replacement surgery replacement.
At 57 I have zero pain nor any other major health problems. I take most vitamins Dr Berg suggest, I sleep 8 hrs a night & avoid stressing over things beyond my control. I watch my younger coworkers stress over non important issues. Several tell me they rarely sleep more than a few hrs. Imo 40/50 is still young. These people should not be experiencing so many issues. I'm going to forward this video. Hopefully they will watch & take Dr Berg's advice.

This is why you are one of my favorite channels I ever found on here doc. You know all the science but your findings always make sense for me on an intuitive level as well. I have found the times in my life where I felt the best were in summers where I would spend all day in the sun. That was when I was a clueless teen though and I began avoiding the sun like the plague when I hit 22. That is when I began having serious issues!!!! After reading many books on biology and natural healing, I began making an effort to get at least 20 mins of sunshine everyday. It helps but now its winter here again.

Living in NY I always crave the sun & being outside at this time of the year. Sat in front of my fireplace yesterday for 20 mins soaking up InferRed and the warmth, just relaxing (no screens). Do you know if the melatonin sold in drug stores in the US is organically derived (harvested) or is it artificially produced? If it's artificial, do you know if it's made of right or left handed choriopters?
Note: the growth of cancer (tumor) cells is more complex than you indicate. First, the cellular environment must become fermentative, that is, the respiration of the cell ceases and it starts living on sugar. (Oxygenation of the body in general is a great influencer of whether or not fermentative environments form.)
IR cannot "protect" against UV radiation. I don't know how, on a physics level, one form of radiation could possibly prevent another, such as you claim for its doing so against UV radiation. It's an interesting idea, but I can't see the physical and biochemical pathways there. Please cite a source.

Mr Berg, first of all i want to thank you for all the beautiful work you do, i'm Greek and all things mentioned in your video making me realize that the good state of our older generations here ( im talking for those over 90 yo) is mostly related to a strict traditional style of living that follow without hesitance. Such a style considers being under the sun as it's main pillar. Nice Vid! I use 300mg Melatonin ed for my multiple sclerosis. 1h before bed.
Melatonin is absolutely safe, and has many very important properties. It is not a merely syncronizer ligh/dark wakeness/sleep, but it is produced in any living organism (unicellulars, plants, and vertebrates) and in any cell of these organisms. It mainly acts as a strongest antioxidante, therefor avoiding (vy scavenging free oxygen radicals) the very toxic effects of these radicals produced during metabolism. Besides it, acts a strong anti-inflammatory agent, neuroprotective, cardiac protector, anti-aging, oncostatic and oncolytic... and many other positive effects.

Deborah
Deborah
3 months ago (edited)
Yes, I recall some very old person telling me once, how that old fashioned notion , getting fresh air and sun each day (maybe 15 minutes twice daily), is very important and keeps you well. Along with walking. That's why many children are more healthy, the ones allowed outside to play. My own Parents insisted we go outside and play before 600pm each day ( we weren't allowed in the house to play before then! I grew up very healthy and my weight was very good. I got flus, but don't now (only because we had shag carpet) .Not to mention the plants, exchanging of the good oxygen, that's good for us too. I believe I will take my melatonin daily now. I work nights, so this is an issue. Bu, Ii also take other calming and beneficial meds too: Rose oil, Saint John Wort, and mag/calcium, vit. D3 and zinc combo. I will work on getting more sun, each day. During warm months, I get a lot because i work in the yard. And I don't want to be political, but keeping people indoors during URI is not a good thing to do.

I’m 28 weeks pregnant and I haven’t had “deep sleep” for over a month. I didn’t go outside much since my back hurt if I sit or stand too long. All I want to do is get at least 2-3 hours of deep sleep but a hour and half is pretty the situation right now. Btw it took me 2-3 hours to fall asleep and I wake up throughout the night. Also when I wake up in the morning I’m not tired like before— more like I never sleep. If anyone have any suggestion I’m willing to try it out. … I talk to my doctor and she told me to take Benadryl since that will make me a bit drowsy. Will give that a try as of now.

Thank you very much for this video Dr. Berg. The pineal gland produces melatonin at night time triggered by darkness, decreasing light intensity. In the case of the subcellular melatonin it is the sun, near infrared light that triggers the mitochondria to produce melatonin; Is production of melatonin instantaneous while under exposure to the sun or Is darkness/sleep still necessary for the mitochondiria to produce melatonin? I've read that it is the cellular water that absorbs the near infrared energy. With the infrared light being able to penetrate the skin, muscle and its energy absorbed by the cellular water eventually causing the mitochondria to produce more ATP energy, it appears that the human body is like a solar panel and inverter.

Red Raspberries and Tart Cherries contain a good amount of Melatonin: I did a simple self experiment a while back where I ate some quality Red Raspberries immediately before bed and remember feeling particularly good the next day. Apparently though taking external forms of Melatonin can cause your body to become dependent on this and subsequently produce less of this important chemical internally so taking exogenous forms of Melatonin probably shouldn't be done regularly: more like a once in while thing.

Melatonin makes me depressed and more groggy the next day so I quit taking it . There was even a study connecting melatonin to knee joint pain I came across on google, which I was having a lot while using melatonin and the knee pain became less frequent after I stopped taking melatonin. Could be psychosomatic but it did seem to help knee pain by not taking melatonin , although i did lose 20lbs recently on a low carb diet so who knows . I do know melatonin did ad to my depression for sure so it isn’t worth for me personally.

You rock. I have learned so much from you. Combined with Dr Ben Lynch’s info, it has helped so so much! I
t started years ago with not being able to use my B vitamins. The wrong ones caused me great anxiety. It took years to get that first part right…getting correct B vitamins.
Thank you, thank you. I am back to ACV, a little B1, getting my liver functioning better with your advice. So very grateful.
From Lynch, I eat radish sprouts to help glutathione production. I also eat sunflower and pumpkin seeds, and broc sprouts as well as for specific nutrients. I am forgetting one now.
Just also recently added a healthy sauerkraut and coconut kefir in small amounts. One cool thing these do is cut sugar cravings.

Wow. I have worked overnight shifts since 1994. So my body rarely sees the sun, could this be why I'm falling apart? Started with hypothyroid in 2001, hard to keep weight off since then. Type 2 diabetes diagnosed in 2018. Granuloma Anulare in 2019( initially thought it was Sarcoidosis so had a CT scan to check lungs and found Histoplasmosis and noted fat on the liver at that point but wasnt told much about it just lose some weight.) Granuloma Anulare went into remission but came back toward end of 2021 so back to dermatologist who sent me back to infectious desease doctor who then sent me to gastroenterologist because liver enzymes were slightly elevated, after an F4 result on Fibroscan got diagnosed with NASH/cirrhosis (no varices or portal hypertension, no signs/ symptems of cirrhosis) doctor said I'm lucky we caught it early as this is a silent killer so I guess I need to thank my spotty legs for saving me LOL. Then to add the cherry on top of all this crap I get the diagnosis of Endometrial Adenocarcinoma grade 1 (I'm told I was lucky we caught it early, better prognosis) Im learning how to eat healthy and get the fat off my liver as well as stop cancer in its tracks. Ive noticed that when I started eating low carb, moderate amounts lean protien, and healthy fats (avacado, extra virgin olive oil) my granuloma anulare calmed down and went into remission again, my dermatologist said it was because of the antiinflammatory effects of the diet i was consuming. If this is the case I'm wondering why the hell dont they recommend that when you get diagnosed with it??? Instead they give you creams and ointments you have to apply 2X per day(pain in the rear) they didnt do a damn thing for mine. Thank you Dr Berg for the info.

Gosh, I wonder how my grandmother lived until age 99, when she'd heard nothing about any of this ? My sister is a doctor, and she writes for the National Health Magazines; Says if you take too much Melatonin, your body NATURALLY stops making its own. Like the dr. to explain that one for me ? Too bad we can't find REAL foods to eat anymore; everything pre boxed with extra salt, white flour and sugars ? Waiting for your reply Dr. Berg. Thanks.

I have this habit I always go for my exercise or walk I have this o.c.d. to see the sunset. This helps me , my mind the sun is setting, somehow it helps me sleep. Yup it's sundown syndrome. But for me it works to see the sundown it helps to keep my brain in check yes it's going down u will probably have a good night sleep. I need to turn my clock around so I don't look at it. I find eye masks and ear plugs and a sleeping schedule helpful. I tried melatonin it does not work for me. Good sleep to u all. Cheers from Hong Kong a super stressful city.

Like you said Dr, if there was only ONE dr berg vid you could watch, THIS would be it!
This is all so true and should be common sense for people. The sun doesn't kill you or give you cancer, quite the opposite.
I can't help but think about Betty White, healthy up to near her 100th birthday and loved hotdogs and vodka.
And the oldest person in the world, a woman in France smokes and drinks wine everyday.
There's something else killing us than the obvious.

Yes Dr. Berg I heard something similar about solar panels receiving between 50-80% being charged from IR as opposed to UV as it was originally believed, which allows the panels to now be optimised for both UV and IR, but mostly IR. This is good news for the solar industry in say locations in the Northern Hemisphere where it tends to be cloudy most of the time as IR penetrates the clouds anyway. Thank you for this extremely enlightening video and some very helpful recommendations.

Thank you Sir for explanation. My Mom is 70 +, Dementia from past 8 years , became bed bonefish to Parkinson’s from 2 years. On melatonin 5 mgm bed time before sleep. Become daily irritate between 5ti 6 evening. You think try to give melatonin before sunset rather than bedtime. Thanks

This makes sense. I was thinking just the other day about how we have an epidemic of nearly everything bad (diabetes, autism, obesity, cancer, ect) compared to 30+ years ago, and one of the things that immediately came to mind was that the average person stays indoors far more often.

Thanks for your video ! but when being inside, almost any device does generate IR rays : incandescent bulbs and also heaters, computers, ovens, even the back of the fridge.
So the infrared have to come from light, through the eyes ? not from heating ?

Well, I’m turning 70, and I have far less health issues and complaints than any of my kids. I’m pretty sure it’s because I garden and prefer to be outdoors, open windows, etc. I’m not exactly into heavy physical activity, but sun and stress free attitude goes a long way.

Thank you Dr. Berg, your research is amazing. I also live by farmers, there is a man who is 90 years old he sold most of his farming land but kept a small acreage of it that he upkeeps I think he gets around or better than some 60 year olds. We all need to be with mother nature more and technology less.

Dr Berg, what exogenous dose should we be taking for antioxidant effects without creating dependency, decreased production? I've seen some micro doses of 0.3 & 0.5mg but does that offer antioxidant effects? Thanks.

I love this video … sometimes just getting back to nature beats everything else. .. I use an infrared mat in my acupuncture treatment room the benefits are endless.. even burns calories and creates a cardio like workout. I believe it’s the future of weight loss for those who can’t be mobile at first or have pain that prevents exercise. I am very excited about the research of melatonin within cells bc I was so into it for the pineal gland and spiritual mental health .. turns out there’s another kind that is a power healer for entire system of the body. The truths come out that these ancient somewhat primitive or spiritual methods ( candle light meditation, fire circles, etc have benefits that can now be explained :) thanks love this one

I've watched this 2 times and don't remember seeing about this point.
With infra red light, is it about taking it in through the eyes or the skin? Or both?
Found the answer 8.30 minutes in.
