Longevity - with Valter Longo, and Sinclair

Protein, Fasting, Cancer, and Longevity - with Valter Longo, PhD | The Proof Podcast EP 237 The Proof with Simon Hill 13.6K subscribers Subscribe 786 Share 31,933 views Dec 5, 2022 The Proof Podcast In Episode 237, I’m joined by Dr Valter Longo for an exploration of protein, cancer, the fasting-mimicking diet, IGF-1, and mTOR. 👇 Visit The Proof website for supporting studies and the full show notes 👇 https://theproof.com/podcast/ Regular listeners of The Proof will know that protein is frequently featured in episodes. As an area of nutrition where the scientific community is split, I am interested in digging into the specifics of each viewpoint – and most importantly, the evidence behind each one. Highly requested guest, Dr Valter Longo, returns to the show today to share his position on this contentious topic. Dr Valter Longo is the Edna M. Jones Professor of Gerontology and Biological Sciences and Director of the Longevity Institute at the USC Leonard David School of Gerontology, one of the leading centres for research on aging and age-related disease. Dr Longo is also the Director of the Longevity and Cancer Program at the IFOM Institute of Molecular Oncology in Milan, Italy. His studies focus on the fundamental mechanisms of aging in simple organisms and mice, and on how these mechanisms can be translated to humans. With extensive education and a prominent career, Dr Longo brings an incredibly interesting perspective to today’s conversation. In this episode, we zoom in on terms that have become buzzwords in the protein space, including IGF-1 and mTOR. We discuss protein requirements for different ages, muscle tissue importance, benefits of protein consumption, and potential risks. We also cover the fasting-mimicking diet for both regular folks and as an adjunct cancer treatment. Specifically, we discuss: 0:00 intro 2:58 Ideal diets for longevity 9:15 Important Pathways for aging 16:24 IGF1 Elevation 19:46 Actue vs Chronic elevation of IGF1 25:11 Danger of Protein Over Consumption 32:52 Impact of exercise on IGF1 38:35 Muscle Mass and Longevity 41:59 Study on High Protein Later in Life 48:03 How to get IGF1 tested 49:54 Low IGF1 & Cognitive Decline 53:00 Resistance to IGF1 54:38 Mendelian Randomization Studies 59:21 Fasting Mimicking Diet 1:16:03 Fasting and Cancer 1:27:51 Ketogenic Diet & Cancer 1:32:15 Outro I appreciate having Dr Longo on the show today and hearing yet another perspective on protein, plus much more interesting research and insights. I hope you found this conversation interesting and informative as part of The Proof's exploration on protein. I had such doubts about the ‘low protein’ take (sarcopenia, etc) and now it makes more sense, knowing that IGF1 isn’t triggered the same by protein after the age of 65, and also how important resistance training actually comes into play to prevent muscle loss.. major AHA moments! Thank you for all you do, looking forward to more info in this FMD space ! 7 Reply Marcelo Temer Marcelo Temer 3 weeks ago 👏👏👏👏 great interview, Simon asks questions and doesn't hesitate to challenge his own takes on health regarding exercise, proteins and muscle building. Thank you Simon and team. I am looking forward to Simon's final conclusions and recommendations on protein consumption, especially for older adults who perform regular resistance training to enhance and protect skeletal muscle. At 77, I have a very keen interest in getting this right and I trust that Simon will do just that. It is worth noting that Simon has a 95% Scientific Accuracy score for his The Proof is in the Plants compared to Dr. Longo's 58% Scientific Accuracy Score of The Longevity Diet in the Red Pen Reviews and this tells me that my trust is justified. I only ask that you also consider that our basic metabolic rate drops as we age and therefore our calorie requirements limit the total number of calories we can consume. This must be a consideration when you consider supplementation versus deriving protein strictly from plant based whole foods. It is possible but is it practical? Then there is Leucine. Thank you in advance Simon and team. 6 The Proof with Simon Hill Reply The Proof with Simon Hill · 6 replies Astrid Thomassen Astrid Thomassen 3 weeks ago Thank you very much. Not to mention he looks better than most people half his age. I unintentionally eat the same way he does (smoothie for breakfast, salad for lunch, rice and beans with veggies for dinner) but I do eat fish once a week. Also, Mike Fremont who just turned 100 and still runs everyday, he has ate a vegan diet since he was 69 and he doesn’t consume a lot of protein and yet he seems to still be thriving. He gets protein from beans, he says he eats beans everyday. I love this conversation and I’m so grateful for Dr. Longo for doing this research 🙏 2 The Proof with Simon Hill Reply 1 reply N S A N S A 3 weeks ago Great content Simon!😀🙌lotsa love from Norway Reply Míster Tempeh Míster Tempeh 2 weeks ago I've been increasing my protein consumption and it doesn't feel that healthy, although being it plant-based. Diet (about 1.2g protein/kg) for the remaining days combined with strength training. He describes the female patients following a strength training video for 20 mins (not sure how many x/week) and gaining, in his words, ‘muscle very quickly and easily’. I have been a personal trainer for nearly a decade and have never had clients in their later years gain muscle ‘very quickly’ unless they were completely untrained or an outlier. Were these women frail and untrained to begin with? I would love to hear more about this because this doesn’t compute with my real world experience at all 2 Reply Luc Vandermeeren Luc Vandermeeren 4 weeks ago Fantastic interview. Thank you both. The protein leverage hypothesis states that human beings will prioritize the consumption of protein in food, and will eat until protein needs have been met, regardless of energy content, thus leading to over-consumption of foodstuffs when their protein content is low. If this is true, It would imply that a low protein diet would be difficult for most people to adhere to. Any thoughts on this? 2 Reply The Proof with Simon Hill · 4 replies Talks2squirrels Talks2squirrels 3 weeks ago Great interview. thanks Simon Reply Stephen Turner Stephen Turner 3 weeks ago I think it is possible to see the rda as a rather low value, but also not go overboard with the safety margin. I am 66, so I do try for a little more, but under 100 g per day. 1 Reply Gary Fletcher Gary Fletcher 3 weeks ago Another great interview Simon. These podcasts are definitely challenging my bias 😂 I’ve really enjoyed the Don Layman podcast and now this one. I’m still leaning towards the Don Layman argument but like everything the truth often is somewhere in the middle and Valtor has some very interesting research. One thing that I’m often left thinking is when researchers start talking about risk and reducing risk of cancer, CHD etc. For someone like myself that isn’t particularly good with maths and statistics I’d be interested in future episodes breaking this down. It’s often easy to be very reactive when hearing new information especially regarding diet and lifestyle. Keep them coming buddy 👍🏻 3 Reply Things Youdontwanttohear Things Youdontwanttohear 3 weeks ago Is there an influence of exercise and body fat level on the effectiveness of the fast/fmd? I have seen some very lean, very active people try fmd, but I wonder how much more beneficial fmd is for people like that. Then again it could be even more effective at that level of leaness and conditioning as some time ago I saw a study review video, on Physionic I believe, about how autophagy is limited while fasting in people with more body fat. The same correlation could exist for fmd. 1 Reply 1 reply Stephen Turner Stephen Turner 4 weeks ago (edited) Perhaps the way to 'have your cake and eat it too' is to markedly periodize your training. A phase of hypertrophy training, along with a high protein high calorie diet. Then another longer phase, but use less exercise and food and protein to maintain gains. Then repeat. 5 The Proof with Simon Hill Reply 1 reply Arleen M Arleen M 4 weeks ago (edited) Thanks for the interview. It's been many many years since I had a course in biochemistry. It would seem that there is a fine line between too much protein and not enough according to Dr. Longo. I do long-distance running and I'm wondering if endurance athletes (marathoners and ultra-marathoners) would need as much (or more) protein than than say body builders. How about if we are over 65? Would he recommend the FMD during training for an athletic event? 3 Reply The Proof with Simon Hill · 2 replies Ariel Malanga Ariel Malanga 3 weeks ago Excellent podcast. I eat a very varied plant diet and never weigh or record my food. Are other listeners using any particular methods or apps to help with this complicated protein measurement task? Any advice would be very welcome. Looking forward to Simon's summing up of the protein topic. 2 Reply 2 replies Eugenie Breida Eugenie Breida 4 weeks ago I am so glad that I am currently addressing a MUCH simpler and more important factor, for one who eats 'well' (organic, omnivore, meat, greens no potatoes (nightshades are out)), is not/never has been more than 5 pounds over an optimal/lean & mean team athlete type: Regular, reliable SLEEP. Loved Rich Roll's very recent Atomic Habits interview, wherein we learned much about how to clean up our minds and environment for more optimal health. Make your bad habits a lot less convenient, those you'd like to bring in to your being obvious and handy. Obvious. I will listen again, but for now am focusing on being a reliable, deep sleeper/happy camper (having moved all coffee supplies to my basement - inconvenient, bone broth to the front, Wi-Fi on a timer, phone put to bed after dinner/before relax time) There are so many awesome tips, understanding - his interview brings out the best in the author, recommended! (Longo I have listened to for 10 years . . . I am not interested in living LONG, but being healthy. I am very thin, thus Longo's input pretty much goes out the other ear (64yrs female bmi 18 ish. I get the feeling that Longo quickly got his heels in on a position, and I don't see him budging much. I realize this is highly unscientific - hey, I'm an architect - but these thoughts are based on synthesizing a LOT of science, though my late night summaries are obviously casual.) I don't think that enough attention is paid to FEMALE dietary needs/hormones etc. These mice are not over 64yr female critters, those that may be do NOT do well fasted. They die. So . . . I am eating my grassfed lamb, eating veggies w/fiber (they don't help much with calories, thus the meat) and keeping my carbs on the low side - as inflammation is certainly not my friend. 6 Reply 1 reply Foolproof Mastery Foolproof Mastery 3 weeks ago Looking forward to the Q&A episode. Valter recommends going as low as 0.7 g/kg BW at some point which is below the RDA. Considering the worldwide obesity crisis, I'm not convinced that this is a good strategy. Lower protein may equal lower satiety if it's not compensated by increased fibre. The average person may end up eating empty calories in our western world as that's what is most readily available to us. In my opinion, both protein and fibre should be prioritised rather than focusing on the cellular mechanisms and making these extreme recommendations. Muscle mass seems to have some correlation with increased longevity also and it will likely be difficult to build muscle mass eating 0.7 g/kg BW. 1 Reply The Proof with Simon Hill · 9 replies Rafael Rafael 4 weeks ago Vida longa...Valter longo 3 The Proof with Simon Hill Reply The Proof with Simon Hill · 1 reply bigpicturegains bigpicturegains 9 days ago Here’s a thought 💭 Maybe the problem is triggering too much growth under the wrong circumstances. If we've been eating meat and fat for more that 2.5 million years why would that be bad for us? Go look into Miki Ben-Dor. So much hogwash in the episode with Longo. 2 Reply The Proof with Simon Hill · 1 reply Panes Panes 3 weeks ago Hmmmmm reading the comments so far, I get a whiff of annoyance, frustration and inconvenience that tge darling macronutrient protein is far more nuanced than some folks would like and bias hard to shake off. Protein is drummed into us, no matter what diet we are on. People seem to shout, "you on a plant based diet, your consumption of protein either in inferior (BS) or too little (more BS)". if you are eating varieties of nuts, seeds, wholegrains, starches, beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, sietan and I mean eating a wide variety as well as fruits and plethora of different veg YOU WILL BE FINE! so.... BREAKFAST: Scrambled tofu with black beans and veggies(think mushrooms, onions, peppers and green peas on whole meal toast, no need for vegan butter either, some soy (with chia or hemp seeds in made to a milkshake) and some peaches/apricots and grapes if needed. LUNCH? Wholegrain noodles, edename, chickpeas, shreddes kale, avocado slices shredded carrot with chili with almond butter, chili and lime dressing, sesame seeds and , soya yogurt with rasperberries and a handful of almonds and flaked coconut, some cashews. Handful of raisens. DINNER? Kidney bean and mushroom curry with almond milk and some coconut milk, with peppers, spinach, some butternut squash and brown rice and green beans with lemon orvlime juice to boost the iron absorption. Extra naan bread or wholemeal bread . Possible green smoothie with bok choi, Pineapple as well if snacking required and oat choc chip homemade no oil cookies. But generally the above will suffice. If my kids eat packets of crisps on their way home sneakily on top of all this who cares!!! This is how my two twin vegan sons eat and the rest of us. They are 14 years, 6 ft, size 10 feet. There ain't no protein deficiency going on, no refined sugars in abundance, carbohydrates to keep them full from starches and legumes/pulses and wholegrains. Eat enough calories yiu get what you need with all x3 macronutrient. If need to lose weight, more veg, cut back in nuts and seeds say to 1oz a day up the starch to keep you full eat your beans! The following day switch up with different combos of greens, veggies maybe oats too Roasted cauliflower and tomatoes etc. So variety is key. Errrr we are fine as vegans who eat PROPERLY. Raterly ever sick and if sick, bounce back very quickly! Then, there's those on a high meat, dairy, egg diet. Is there a chance this maybe too much protein not wrapped up in fibre is taxing for the body? Whether processed or not and i dont know but is the excess saturated fat, cholesterol and haem iron, interplaying here along with various enzymes and compounds produced? Dr Colin Campbell and his caution reductionism springs to mind here as I am sure all these isolated factors play their role together. Eat whole plant food 85% to 100% Excercise and a variety of it and regular Get proper sleep Keep hydrated Engage in social activity Engage in spiritual happiness and meditate Have a hobby Keep toxins/pollution to a minimum Laugh a lot show love and kindness to self and others. Job done! Yes?! It really is simple. Simon, you are doing such wonderful work. Bloody brilliant. Reply Kurt Hanson Kurt Hanson 2 weeks ago the old protein is evil until your 65th birthday then it becomes protective - say on average you lose 1% of muscle mass every year from age 35 - you’ll lose even more annually following a low protein lifestyle. by the time you reach 65 you’ve conservatively lost 1/3 of your muscle mass. no wonder all these protein fearing longevity experts like longo & sinclair already have the muscle mass of a 12-year-old schoolgirl. the hardest thing to do as we age is build muscle why not do everything in your power now to save muscle mass? i’m not talking about eating 6 high protein meals a day & sitting on the couch & constantly stimulating igf1 / mtor - but surely 3 meals a day prioritising protein mixed with lifting heavy things a few times a week will go a long way to mitigate sarcopenia? lastly enough with the blue zones garbage - it’s time for red zones - spend your time researching red zones & why hong kong has the longest average lifespan per capita in the world & they eat the most red meat per capita in the world. 3 Reply 1 reply Jamie Lee Jamie Lee 2 weeks ago Honestly, he doesn’t look healthy to me. To me, philosophy is simply thinking clearly and trying to make sense of things. Anyway, as a philosopher, I wonder if Lex would agree that our appreciation of life, our perspective, ultimately depends on our thoughts, yet we really have no idea where they come from, and certainly no ultimate control over them. But some of us are lucky enough to stumble on wonderful conversations like this one that lead to thoughts that make our lives better. Thank you so much. It seems like at least once per month my mother would spend the weekend reliving all of the horrors she experienced during that time when the Germans invaded and raped her and everybody was just running with nothing but the clothes on their back with bombs dropping left and right, no stores no food no place to live it's still fresh in my mind. We are both 76 years old. Daniel and his daughter enjoyed time together, walking and talking about issues, gaming, cooking, etc. Still, I am glad that I watched it, and I surely would have shared the link with him, even though we both had Lex on our subscribe list. It pains me to discover that we are on the verge of wearing sensors that would have likely seen the heart failure signs far enough in advance to save him. In reference to time stamp 5:30.. This made the hair on my neck stand up as tears rolled down my face. I wanted to share my thoughts.. I do believe that all human suffering is caused by wanting thing to be different then what they are, we're always wanting what we can't have. I believe this is a huge reason for our grief, unwilling to except the death as it is reality. A part of me would give my life to bring back my lost loved one "artificial or not" as another part of me questions the moral concept of this. I believe only mentally stable people could enjoy this for what it is "science". With all of this being said I'd like to add that I'm a mother that lost my 14 year old son 3 years ago. I dropped my son off at a sleep over at a friend's house and that boy decided to play with a gun... He shot my son in the chest. I do believe a huge part of moving forward with such a loss is in accepting it. As such a science would interfere with that natural process. Looking forward to many more of your talks and thank you for letting me share! 2 Reply Hieu Hieu 1 year ago Been waiting for this podcast for ages! Reply The Renaissance Piper The Renaissance Piper 1 year ago Lex, this is one of the most profound conversations I’ve ever witnessed! 1 Reply 2 replies Barak Rigbi Barak Rigbi 1 year ago Until I heard the this episode I had a definite idea that the contemplation that we are mortals inherently drives meaning to our every moment. I took assurance from the Greek mythology where said that gods are abusing humans because they are jealous of our mortality, as they, the Gods, have meaningless existence because they can’t die. But now, after hearing this episode I realize that contemplating of living forever is IDENTICAL to the contemplation that we are going to die, and that it gives THE SAME meaning to every moment. Because both give time no meaning. Think about that: if you live forever what is the meaning of delaying to tomorrow? Time has no meaning. Tomorrow is identical to today. So when time has no meaning, it’s critical to make the maximum of every moment. Not because it will not come back (mortals meaning of life), but because you can’t escape your eternal present (immortals meaning of life). Thank you Lex and David for this existential epiphany. 16 Reply 1 reply Sven Sorg Sven Sorg 1 year ago So excited to hear from david again! A few years ago I was frustrated with how dismissive I felt my doctor was so I found a private medical practice focused on wellness that does not take insurance, it is all self pay. They are incredibly attentive and will order ALL the bloodwork. Since I started going there my health and subsequently proformance and looks have improved. My profile pic is recent, no filters and I am 41 so they are doing a great job. Fortuntely they are not expensive either at $80/visit plus the cost of the few prescriptions which my actual insurance does cover for the most part. My insurance also covers the bloodwork they order, it does not cover the supplements I take which I think is penny wise, dollar foolish of insurance companies. Anyway my point being at this present moment in the US there is excellent healthcare for those who can afford it that is based on a wellness model not a sick model. My doctor orders bloodwork every 6 months and I see them every 6 weeks as I have to be monitored for BP for one optional proformance enhancing RX. While it sounds terrible it is only for those that can afford it now, having fewer barriers, one being cost, can be over come over time. At least these things exist. I like the balanced approach to diet - most of the time serious focus on good habits, but not denying the occasional enjoyment of an old favorite food. Thank you for the discussion. Reply Eriksson Eriksson 1 year ago Thank you for putting timestamps on your videos 🙏 1 Reply Kiyoshi Suzaki Kiyoshi Suzaki 1 year ago This is quite interesting - I am sure various topics covered here may be seem quite random, but there is some theme behind that keeps me curious - perhaps curiosity is the theme - which is like the essence of creativity, life - or childlikeness! (the point it appeared early in the video, and rightfully so) What is also interesting is AI - its impact to our life/society but definitely about its connection to neuro science, biology etc... yet its strong connection to Zen, way of life/ state of being, which to me is about life - or essence of life - and knowing more about ourselves... I am unsure if or how these topics may be processed re health and well-being of our life by addressing physical and mental health and the health of our life/society - in the company I am involved in, but I sense there is connection to these seemingly random subjects - also possibly relating to my never-ending mindless self-talk on youtube. Say, there is randomness in the universe. But we are born out of the dust of the universe - so there must be a theme to be found in that randomness, to make life possible, which is a continuous challenge against the law of entropy. Everything will go into chaos (impermanence) but life is to go against that to find some orderliness out of the chaos. Right.. what keeps me immensely interested is; my/our never-ending curiosity/ childlikeness (hopefully) to explore - as if to learn how to play this game of life - how to live our life the best I/we can. Why not? Have fun! Kio PS What I found interesting is, the topic of fasting here and how we may live life has a connection to the three books I published - NMC re waste elimination/ Lean, NSFM re empowerment and decentralized way of mgmt, and Results from the heart, which also touches on Avatamsaka sutra - as a way of how to manifest our potential... Buddha might have said, life is suffering/pain. So, the life may be seen as a process of going through the pain so that the system (life) has to come out with idea/solution to go beyond - gain, eg through fasting - or meditation or..,any hurdles we may face. For the breakthrough to happen (eg for us to be alive) even seemingly different/unrelated elements has to be "synthesized" (to organize itself by doing whatever is needed) so that the solution is found - this is creativity/ life. It may require strong discipline/will. It is like sila-samadhi-panna to come up with wisdom even to combine seemingly random ideas/ events. Perhaps in 'real' childlikeness is a strong will to resign/accept what is inevitable such that they are in the now to face everything as it comes (more or less) in a very creative way... PS2 .Toward the last few minutes, although I had a view re death as it is the same as life (accepting the state of is-ness), I had a smile like a child for this interesting podcast. Well done, and thank you google/ youtube to read my mind t bring this to my attention. Reply 1 reply dondeezy271 dondeezy271 1 year ago I really enjoyed this episode. On the other hand, if I’ve accomplished what I need to do for the day and I go for a nice dinner and enjoy a bunch of pasta it makes me feel very relaxed and gives me a great sleep. In that sense, it does make me feel good. I think the key is not to eliminate things you enjoy but to enjoy them at the right time. At minute 57:45 David says this more or less, I shortened it a bit [begin paraphrasing — The best bang for the longevity buck is to do both well, eat less often and eat the right things . You gotta live life , what’s a long life if it’s not enjoyable . So indo have a dessert now and then. But anyway… The data says that plant based foods will be better than meat based foods. He also says a lot of people may disagree with him but … —end paraphrasing] Now my family (that loves your content) wants you to stop the carnivore diet. We are thinking you haven’t gone vegan yet, if we are wrong , correct us please. We think you should go mostly vegan or all the way vegan. So many people are following you now and you have an opportunity to change people for the better. Please give veganism another chance if you have already tried and failed. Hire a chef, we think you can afford it. You can do this. There are so many people with active lifestyles that are vegan. I’m not saying you will be a better athlete and you will feel better but my bet is you can be the same athlete and feel just as good. You can do this. If the future of humanity is multi planetary(seems to be something you are excited about talking about) then are we gonna grow animals to eat them on those other planets? Seems a bit difficult and wasteful. Not to mention the extra suffering involved. You are a brilliant person and maybe you are right and we (including David Sinclair) are wrong. I don’t know for sure. But… One idea, work with David Sinclair on a plan and a time period to collect all your biological data in your current state of eating. Then go vegan for whatever time period David recommends and collect the data for that time period. You can keep the calories and protein levels the same and maybe keep the number of times a day eating the same . Then have David analyze it and tell you what has improved or not and how it affects your biological age . Maybe you can prove David’s eating style wrong. Or maybe you can prove the carnivore diet is actually bad for aging. Who knows but my bet is that David is doing what is right. He seems to be a biological genius and wants to live a long healthy life. I guess to really prove anything you need lots of data. But what if the data says carnivore and vegan have same results? Well if that is the answer then just go with vegan to save the planet and the animals. I’m pretty sure going vegan is not worse for your body , or else David wouldn’t be doing it. You can always cheat a little but go mostly plant based . Anyway, it would be cool to see you talk more about something like this. But no matter what, we won’t stop listening to your interviews, best thing on YouTube in my opinion. Keep up the great work!! Now the fda is talking about banning nmn. I only just started taking nmn this week. And I'm pretty sure I can notice a difference. Seems like my body is recovering better. I thought about it and came to the conclusion that there may be no identity continuity in time. What if every moment of time the brain simply generates a conscious instance with an unique identity? Imagine making an instant copy of yourself. Then each copy will feel as if it is the same person it was since childhood but the copy can’t have the same identity. So the continuity is simply an illusion because the brain generates a conscious instance based on the information it has and the information is stored from previous experiences. Anyway idk, even if it’s an illusion it’s still better to preserve the thread, I still want people to live longer and healthier Also as David talked about bringing back of Benjamin Franklin, o copy of him would be actually indistinguishable and virtual the same thing as the real human since we may actually copies of a previous moment in time Reply Fabio Dimebag Fabio Dimebag 1 year ago Man thank Odin for these podcasts, I'd be more alone without them. 1 Reply Kevin Smith Kevin Smith 1 year ago "I follow him on Instagram.
