Microbiome And Gut Bacteria Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle Dec 12, 2019 ,Kathryn Lukas | TEDxUniversityofNevada , Jun 15, 2020
To celebrate the upcoming World Microbiome Day,
we’ve compiled seven crazy facts about your resident gut bacteria;
from microbial CSI to crapsules,
these facts will leave you as mad about the microbiome as we are!
Table of contents
1.) The microbiome has been coined the “second genome”
2.) Our microbiome is as unique as a fingerprint
3.) Gut bacteria can “steal” genes
4.) The microbiome educates our developing immune system
5.) There are numerous bacterial species yet to be discovered
6.) Faecal Microbiota Transplants can treat Clostridium Difficile infections
7.) Our microbiota may influence mental health
Celebrate World Microbiome Day by exploring yours
Whilst we can’t see them with the naked eye,
humans play host to trillions of microbes
in and on their bodies,
collectively known as the microbiome.
The largest and most important community of microbes
resides in the human gut, but
there is also
an oral,
skin and
vaginal microbiome.
The gut microbiome comprises :
multiple microorganisms, including :
eukaryotes,
archaea,
fungi,
viruses and
most abundant of all,
bacteria.
Humans exist in symbiosis with their resident bacteria, meaning that :
we mutually benefit each other.Whilst they need us for a space to live, we rely on them to
digest
resistant starches,
synthesise vitamins and even
train the developing immune system.
There is still much we don’t know about the microbiome, though
it is clear that our gut bacteria are instrumental to
human health and represent a new frontier in biomedical science.
In honour of the upcoming World Microbiome Day, we’ve compiled a list of the seven craziest microbiome facts. Without further ado, let’s jump in:
The microbiome has been coined the “second genome”
Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle discusses :
why the gut microbiome is the most important organ you’ve probably never heard of
The microbiome refers to the collective genome of all the microorganisms in our body.
It might surprise you to learn that bacterial genes dwarf our human genome,
numbering in the millions compared to our measly 20,000.
Each of these bacterial genes programs for a specific function, many of which benefit humans and patch up gaps within our genome.
For example, our human genes struggle to digest certain indigestible fibres,
but our gut bacteria have just the tools for the job and fill in for our human enzymes.
Researchers call the microbiome our “second genome”, as its genes
complement and augment our human ones.
The “second genome” opens up a new frontier in health research and is the subject of numerous ongoing studies,
such as the Human Microbiome Project (HMP).
The HMP is an ongoing American initiative seeking to collect a diverse database of microbiome samples.
Similar to the Human Genome Project, the landmark enterprise seeks to help researchers identify microbial markers of health and disease for therapeutic application.
Our microbiome is as unique as a fingerprint
ALT TEXT.
Indentical twins share the same DNA,
but their microbiomes can be vastly different from one another
While we share around 99.9% of our DNA with other humans, our microbiomes can be vastly different, sharing as little as 10% similarity!
Take the Macfarlane twins, founders of Gut Stuff- despite being genetically identical, their microbiomes are only 40% similar!
Emerging research suggests that our microbiome profiles may be used to identify us, acting as a microbial fingerprinting system.
In one study, 80% of subjects remained identifiable within a year of having their gut microbiome sampled, although microbial skin trails were shown to be far less accurate and stable.
The technique is unlikely to be adopted for forensic application, mainly because the microbiome is subject to change, and it’s unlikely someone would leave their intestinal microbes at a crime scene. However, this didn’t stop CSI Miami from featuring the hypothetical technique in an episode.
The microbiome educates our developing immune system
Immunity is not hard-wired into our genes but acquired during our earliest years. As it turns out, gut bacteria play a crucial role in the programming of the immune system, potentially influencing health outcomes in later life.
From around one to five years old, our gut bacteria train GALT immune cells to tolerate beneficial and commensal bacteria, thereby preventing unnecessary inflammation.
After graduating from microbe middle school, the immune cells are let loose in the body to put their education into practice.
Interestingly, disruptions to the early microbiome due to antibiotics, bottle feeding and caesarian section birth are associated with an increased risk for allergies and autoimmune disorders.2022-03-23-Immune-System-And-Gut-Microbiome-1The Microbiota-Immune Axis: How Do Gut Bacteria Influence Immune Health?
Parallel to this, those raised in close proximity to animals, either through a household pet or livestock, have lower levels of allergies in adulthood.
Researchers hypothesise that diminished microbiome diversity in childhood, whether through hyper cleanliness, antibiotics or bottle-feeding, hinders our immune education.
In short, dysbiosis means that the immune cells experience a smaller sample of microbes during their training. As a result, they are more likely to attack innocent cells accidentally in later life.
On the contrary, a diverse microbiome allows the cells to become skilled at distinguishing between harmful pathogens and harmless bacteria.
Unlike the immune cells trained by a dysbiotic microbiome, these would have received a broad spectrum education.
Gut bacteria may “steal” genes to expand their functions
ALT TEXT.
Certain species of bacteroidetes possess seaweed-degrading genes, believed to have been acquired from marine microbes found in seafood.
Not only can our gut bacteria educate our immune cells, but they are also good students, able to adapt and learn new skills.
For example, bifodobacterium and firmicutes species have been observed to share genes with seaweed-eating bacteria, allowing them to better digest nori and wakame.
It is theorised that the gut bacteria encountered marine bacteria on seafood and stole their genes via a process called horizontal gene transfer.2021-02-19-Dna-testing-ethics-1Explained: Gut Bacteria Can Program Digestive Genes
Interestingly, the seaweed digesting genes are more common in the microbiomes of Asian subjects, a region where sushi is commonly consumed.
Researchers are unsure whether the bacteria acquired these genes over thousands of years or within months, with opinions split both ways.
According to one hypothesis, rapid bacterial gene acquisition may have allowed our ancient ancestors to adapt quickly to new environments. Otherwise, our forebears would have had to wait for genetic mutations to arise at glacial speed.
There are numerous bacterial species yet to be discovered
Over the last two decades, sequencing technologies have allowed researchers to begin cataloguing gut bacteria from around the world, offering new insights into the microbiome.
While great strides have been made in the taxonomy of gut bacteria, there is still lots of work to be done.
For starters, there are only 440,000 microbiome samples publicly available, compared to 20 million human genome sequences. As such, we are still missing large parts of the picture regarding the “second genome”.
Secondly, the samples available are biased in favour of highly developed, industrialised societies, particularly the U.S. and China.
In these places, caesarian section births, hyper cleanliness and antibiotic use are commonplace, all of which can disrupt microbiome diversity.
Interestingly, the few samples from those living in more ancestral ways (pastoral or hunter-gatherer lifestyles) possess more diversity than those living in highly developed societies. Furthermore, they have also been found to contain bacterial species unknown to science!
Take the Hadza tribe- the last people group living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle in the world. In one study, 30% of the bacteria in their gut were shown to be novel species, suggesting our modern way of life may be culling key species.2022-01-21-The-Hadza-People-main-1The Hadza People: What Can A Hunter-Gatherer Microbiome Tell Us?
Who knows what species and bacterial genes we will discover in guts across the globe?
Faecal transplants can re-shape the gut microbiome and cure bacterial infections
ALT TEXT.
Faecal transplants can shift microbiome composition, thereby treating microbially modulated conditions
Faecal microbiota transplants (FMT) are an ancient treatment dating back 1000 years to Chinese practitioners.
During the procedure, the patient is transplanted with a faecal sample from a “healthy” donor, often via enema or colonoscopy.
More recently, scientists have developed pills containing faecal samples, colloquially known as “crapsules”. FMTs shift the patient’s microbiome to reflect the donors, similar to an organ transplant.Screenshot-2022-06-21-at-11.47.35Faecal Transplants: Don’t Try It At Home!
Whilst it may sound gross, FMT has proven a safe and highly effective treatment for clostridium difficile infections, boasting a 90% success rate!
Clostridium difficile is a debilitating condition where pathogenic bacteria take over the gut. In many cases, the condition is triggered by heavy antibiotic use.
In 2012, a group of researchers from M.I.T university started a non-profit company called OpenBiome, designed to store faecal samples for those in need of donors.
Our microbiota may influence mental health
The gut and brain have long been known to communicate bidirectionally, both via the vagus nerve and other pathways. As such, the gut is known as “the second brain”. Evidence suggests that the microbiome may also influence mood via the same mechanisms.
Firstly, those with mental health conditions, including depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, often have microbiomes characterised by imbalance and increased intestinal permeability (dysbiosis). By itself, it’s not enough the implicate our gut bugs, but it hints at a link.
Animal studies offer further clues, particularly in rodent models. For example, mice transplanted with the microbiota of depressed humans adopt depressive behaviours, suggesting the microbiome directly influences mood.2022-04-21-Food-and-Mood-1Nutritional Psychiatry: The Link Between Food And Mood
Moreover, a pivotal study found that mice raised in a germ-free environment, therefore missing a microbiome, exhibit exaggerated physiological responses to stress.
The mechanisms by which our bacteria may shape mood aren’t fully understood, although multiple plausible pathways have been suggested. Firstly, imbalances in the microbiome can increase intestinal permeability and inflammation.
Alongside dysbiosis, numerous mental health conditions are characterised by increased inflammatory markers in the bloodstream, suggesting the two are related.
Additionally, gut bacteria synthesise numerous mood-altering chemicals, including the happiness hormone serotonin.
It is hypothesised that microbiota can transmit neurotransmitters via the vagus nerve, shaping behaviour.
Likewise, researchers suspect some short-chain fatty acids may be neuroactive, offering another mechanism by which microbiota may modulate mood.

NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for medical advice. While some viewers might find advice provided in this talk to be helpful as a complementary approach, this speaker makes claims about nutrition and the human microbiome with too much certainty for the current state of research. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle discusses why the gut microbiome is the most important organ you’ve probably never heard of. The gut is the second brain, and gut health affects your overall health. This means that you are what you eat, but you are also the metabolites that live in your gut and produce the substances you need for emotional balance, energy level, and disease prevention. Poor lifestyle choices cause gut imbalances, which can lead to neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune diseases, and even anxiety and depression.
Angle talks about three critical molecules and how they work in the body to affect your overall wellness. She also shares some tips about what you can do to maintain a healthy gut microbiome through diet and lifestyle choices.
Entrepreneur and biochemist Erika Ebbel Angle, PhD, has dedicated her life to studying the gut. Dr. Angle is the CEO and co-founder of Ixcela, the Internal Fitness™ company. Ixcela evaluates the gut microbiome using a blood sample, and then offers personalized recommendations to restore gut health. Angle shares her lifelong love of science in many ways, including through her nonprofit, Science from Scientists, which brings scientists into classrooms to promote STEM careers and science education. A graduate of MIT and Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Angle is also a former Miss Massachusetts who used her platform to encourage students to pursue STEM careers and scientific discovery.
Erika Ebbel Angle, Ph.D., is the CEO and Co-founder of Ixcela, a biotechnology company aimed at developing tests and interventions to improve gut microbiome efficacy and health. She is also the Executive Director and Founder of Science from Scientists, an award-winning National nonprofit focused on improving Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) attitudes and aptitudes for children aged 9-13. Outside of work, Erika enjoys scuba diving, skiing, and classical piano. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I had gut issues about 17 years ago. Specialists couldn't even figure it out. Drastically changing my diet changed my life, along with an excellent nutritionist. He is also my chiropractor. Today at 62 I'm in excellent health, no meds, and rarely get sick. I wish more people would listen to what their gut is telling them. It can change your life!

Stress got to me this past year. I became depressed and neurotic. Ended up with gout, an inflammatory disorder, then irritable bowel disease. Was not feeling energetic or happy, just apathy. Saw a documentary about the importance of gut microbes. I started meditating, getting exercise and eating gut healthy foods. Sauerkraut kimchi are good fermented foods to increase your prebiotics. Not a big fan of Kimchi so I eat 3 forks of sauerkraut 30 minutes before eating. Research has found the prebiotics from the sauerkraut double after half an hour. 3 months later now I am feeling normal again. Within the last 3 weeks have started to try intermittent fasting.

This video touches on a very important piece of a large overarching set of ideas: mental, physical, and dietary health are all interconnected parts of a single whole, and if you neglect one aspect, you effectively neglect them all.
I can say from first hand experience that there is nothing in the world more valuable than being wholly healthy; it's literally the core difference between contentment and peace versus misery and stress. You can handle life and its cruddy tendencies with startling ease if you take optimal care of yourself.

I was diagnosed with beginning Lupus about 17 years ago after a blood test showed it. I had a lot of problems with my ligaments and bones. My doctor told me he could prescribe drugs, but it was better to change my diet. He told me no dairy products and no grains were the best things for me to do. I followed his advice and within a month all my symptoms were gone and after a new blood test it showed that everything was great. Up to this moment I feel fine now at age 73 and hope to continue to feel this way!

This is a nice overview of an important and fascinating subject. Study into the microbiome has established some valuable information so far, but it's still in its early stages. I suspect that the more we learn, the more critical to all aspects of health the microbiome will prove to be.

Excellent talk. Gut management is something that was little known about until fairly recently. I’ve found out more about it by reading Prof./Doctor Tim Spector’s book, ‘The Diet Myth’ and his other book, ‘Spoon Fed’. For those that read my comment I’d recommend both books.
Tim takes a very technical subject and writes in a style that’s entertaining and engaging. Not the easiest of subjects to get your head around but it’s critically important to do so if you want to be healthy! Thanks to Erika Ebbel Angle for a this talk. 👍

Just to find out they were all connected and I have an overgrowth of candida in my gut. Insane! Now I'm healing it with food and supplements. I can't wait to have my life back 😭😭😭 A lot of people have this and don't know I highly recommend calling around and getting a Candida test done!

Was very surprised that she did not mention that supplementation of prebiotic fibers, i.e., resistant starch, to improve the microbiome. Tons of evidence including health benefits like improved insulin sensitivity (blood sugar management), reduced inflammation all over the body, improved regularity and reduced leaky gut, and even reduced hypertension and better heart health. All linked to resistant starch's fermentation in the gut.

When someone talks to me about health - whether they're a doctor, nurse, or academic - what I like to pay particular attention to is that person's health. Do they look/seem healthy?
This woman is 38 years old. She looks to me more like 28. She is fit, and she seems like a basically relatable, likable person (so, emotionally healthy as well). I can't shake the feeling that she practices what she preaches. And to me, that's a sign that she knows what she's talking about.

As someone who recently battled with Blastocystis hominis and some elevated gnarly bacteria in my gut, I can attest to her message. My body was affected in more ways than I can mention in this post, but I echo the following:
Keep playing like children my friends. Look at your food as something more than just a substance to fill your appetite - the sugar isn’t worth it. More importantly, don’t take your gut for granted.

My health, both mental and physical was at it`s worst when i was in my middle twenties early thirties. I developed IBS and Asthma and suffered a lot with anxiety which i was prescribed medication and inhalers. Little did i know back then, that by a change in my very bad diet of mainly highly processed junk foods i would feel and be much healthier. I started smoking when very young but gave up smoking when i was in my early fifties which improved my health somewhat ( i am almost sixty seven now) and went vegan for ethical reasons when i was fifty seven. On a much better diet which is plant based including nuts and seeds and much less processed foods, i am now feeling the best i`v ever been, both physically and mentally. I can`t remember the last time i had a cold or felt poorly and my energy levels are always high and stable. For the past nearly ten years there has been no problems or symptoms with Asthma or IBS or Anxiety and i put this down to a change in my diet, from a very poor one to a healthy good one. If only we were all taught a healthy way to live in our homes and education it would make all the difference to so many things in life as being sick ruins lives and slowly over time the quality of our lives too.

I stopped take sertraline after only using it once because it caused severe diarrhea (around 10-15 times in that day). But I feel that I got rid of my good gut bacteria during that day and now every time I consume carbs I experience symptoms that I never had before with foods I used to enjoy and these symptoms are: ringing in my ears, bpms shoot to 150-170 depending on the amount of carbs I consume, loss of sensation in my body, excessive fatigue, nausea, and my vision starts to go white, and also feel de realization which is constant and not only if I eat carbs. So with these symptoms I feel they align very well with what’s considered “going into shock” but it’s only triggered after eating anything with carbs. So if anyone has any advice on how to treat this I would be very appreciative as I’ve gone to the emergency room 3 times after that day I took the sertraline, and they always say that I’m fine other than high glucose levels.

I changed my life with an arbonne cleanse that was supposed to by 30 days but it’s going on four months. Sugar, gluten, caffeine eliminated. I feel amazing. I’m 55 and look in my 30s. It changed my hair, my skin and my mood. I was also dealing with an autoimmune disease (MS) and am fine. It was all diet. I’m “vegan adjacent” now.

Are we all just going to ignore how much hand sanitizer is being pushed on us during the pandemic yet she tells us thats its good for us some dirt here and there. definitely makes me wonder how much damage we're doing to our body with all the hand sanitizers that we're using right now, overall I love this video, amazing speech.

This just talks about increasing the diversity of the microbiome to decrease individual species influence over the body. In a situation of majority rules, gut flora can gang up on a person's behavior influencing systems, if any one species is allowed to become too numerous. This isn't because they have cooperative intelligence of some sort, but rather because our systems have cooperative intelligence and impose that on anything found inside us, to maintain homeostasis. I solved this problem by adding a security protocol for implementing cooperation protocols on newly detected units, preventing cooperation with foreign entities. They are still grouped by similarity, for increased understanding of the signals they provide, but there is no cooperative care involved. That, combined with some clean up procedures, solves the microbiome influence problem in every area that my systems are currently aware of.

Hello Erika, Thank you for your well-presented, very informative talk. When you say 'diabetes' do you mean Type 1 Diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes? It would be useful if you could make this clear because there is a lot of confusion which could be quite dangerous.

She said that sometimes, the gut can just never properly recover. My old family doctor prescribed me constant, daily antibiotics (Minocycline) for a course of multiple years straight when I was a young teenager, to deal with my acne. I now have various health concerns that I feel are linked to this very long-term antibiotic use. Does anyone have any suggestions for what good courses of action could be to try to repair the damage that has been done to my gut?

She mentioned the 3 important groups but just barely (but quick flashed pictures of some) about the associated foods of so many, I wish she mentioned more of the simple & affordable alternate anti oxident foods( e.g.cabbage family, radish varieties, onion, carlic, ginger, turmeric, mint, basil, sage,.. variety of lentils, peas, pulses.., egg, sardine, mackerel,.., cheap plain yogurt/ yogurt drinks, non VINEGAR BASED fermented foods, etc, etc)
& finally there were few other MDs& Phds who all were racing to develop gut biotic SUPPLEMENTS in the last few years& always avoid talking about natural common foods but always hints about their Suppliments( sells ~$30-100+ for month..) insted, she gets kudos for talking about exercise, meditation, etc. Also good sleep important too.

Your body is much smarter than what you think. Many people have what my grandmother called cravings, which she interpolated as something lacking in the body and eating such food gave the that nutrients it needed. I rarely eat eggs but sometimes I have a strong craving for one.

Hey Guys, I'm a dietitian that primarily deals with gut related conditions. I have always believed that I learn just as much from my patients as I do from books. In an effort to better understand the needs of my patients, I was wondering if you could help me understand what concerns you guys the most with your gut health? What stops you from working with someone trying to improve your gut health? I would appreciate the feedback...and no I'm not trying to sell you something and I do not have my own agenda I'm trying to push, I'm just trying to be a better dietitian.

Hi. I have read research on the gut biome and how it can assume immunomodulating roles in the body. I am looking for any clinical study currently on going that uses FMT to treat various diseases, this can include IBS or autoimmune conditions like Sjogren's syndrome. I have a gut feeling my problems have originated in my gut, for I have comsumed a plethora of antibiotics and out of country foods in my teenage years and am now having serious consequences of autoimmune origin. I am looking to be an advocate of gut health and to donate my body to science in any way shape or form I can. If anybody knows how I can help, please let me know.

Im trying to repair my gut. I really hope it will be alright some day but I often fear I will never be able to be low stress and happy if we can’t adopt a child...( 2.2 Million applications vs. under 100 thousand non related adoptions per year, chances are bad for us...)

Does anyone here know the interaction between emotional numbness and tyrosine? My depression developed back in two years ago mainly because of suffering from tremendous stress that were not properly sorted out. The aftermath was emotional numbness which still carries on today. I wonder if there’s correlation between this symptom of depression and the lack of tyrosine, and how stress affects the concentration of tyrosine in our body. Thanks

I believe diet plays a huge role in both mental and physical illnesses. Probably more then most people realise, I mean you put good oil in a car to make it run better and extended its life, humans are way more valuable then any car so why is it so hard for us to do the same with food? You are what you eat. There is a lot of information all over the internet on food and the brain gut and physiology. Still no solid evidence to back it up tho... call me a conspiracy theorists but I don't think they really want us to know, I mean if a simple diet change can cure hereditary or even terminal illness doctors and pharmaceutical company's can't bank on it. What's a doctor without patients? If no-one got sick billions of dollars and years of medical school are at stake is that something they really want to risk?

Tryptophan is found in most animal based foods. Foods high in dietary tyrosine include cheese, soybeans, beef, lamb, pork, fish, chicken, nuts, eggs, dairy, beans, and whole grain. Indole 3 lactic acid found in yogurt. So animal based diet seems to be a great way to get all these great nutrients.

The smooth muscle in your colon/intestines are being damaged by outside factors. Once the lining of the gut is damaged, that’s when everything goes south. You can pile all the nutrients and good bacteria back into the system you want but if that is damaged none of these things will be absorbed or useful

Why don't they at least know enough about nutrition to get the sick to listen, to begin prevention instead of prescribing pill after pill for the aged? What I am seeing is that if you are 70+ and sick, you are written off!

Very interesting.
Wonder if I can buy microbiome supplements, to cultivate herds of useful bacteria.
Think I will try eating some fresh grass from the yard.
Many animals do it, so it must be good.

The comment that healthy gut microbiome is killed and may never recover (from the causes she lists and others)...,
interesting newer studies that appear to show high promise that prolonged fasting (more than 3 -5 days) can empty your gut of bad biome. When you break fast, you select foods high in healthy probiotics and the result is they flourish and they're calling it a "Reset" of your gut microbiome.
Apparently a lot of natural Autophogy principles to which we can benefit as well

It’s hard for impoverished groups to access healthy food. There are literally generations of people with malnutrition due to the ridiculous distribution of resources. And when you add a hundred years of targeted marketing for toxic cheap food, you can see how it’s not just the individual who is responsible for our health.

In a talk to lay people, using language that a layman can easily understand, I didn't see any reason for Tedx Talk to label this as suspect, which is what their disclaimer does. She doesn't suggest any radical treatment, or really any treatment but healthy eating and paying attention to your bodies own signals.

You are of course right. But your advice lacks a bit. If you think fish is a good source for omega 3 then there are better ones like avocados. Don’t eat meat there are so many reasons. Eat organic plant based food and you gut will get healthy again. But it’s a long process. If you have eating poor for lots of years it will take maybe 6 months to a year to get a healthy gut.

Michrocondria. Responsible for sufficient message carrying. When we eat in balanced we for receptors we don’t need, we clog receptors, we restrict correct functional signaling and attraction. For the reason of blockage, we over create more of the enzymes which are not getting into their receptor and a build up then forms. Inflammation forms and neutrophils are then called upon. Too many of these PMNs then exist and too much toxin (waste/carbon dioxide) is excreted and thus- disease is formed via incorrect genome expression.
Melatonin is the chemical that regulates our response to dark and light- when it’s darker our melatonin released assists in thanking our trillions of living “ things” and allowing them to rest and re energize. Amino acids conglomerate creating proteins.

Free radicals bad? Hmmm, you might need to re-think that. Nitric oxide for example, is a weak free radical, probably the most important signaling molecule in the body. Vital for virtually every function in the human body. Oh, and maybe might re-think wearing those crazy-high heels. Induces lumbar hyperlordosis, stressing lower lumbar/sacral spine...BTW the primary innervation of the gut...hmmmm...
That being said...AWESOME presentation! Along the lines of Raphael Kellman.

Our gut, may be our entire physical existence is because of these microbes. If microbes play an important role in our lives, how important are these microbes in our soil, from which we get our food. A highly organic soil is key to a highly efficient physical being.
So many researches are pointing out the fact that an organic soil can tackle the biggest challenge faced by humanity today climate change.
Earth has different forms of life. Plants, trees, animals, birds, insects, fungi, bacteria, virus, etc. Yes there is always a predator for a prey but Humans should abandon this belief that everything is meant for them and stop over exploiting and give back to nature because it is the need of the hour.
If soil has trillions of species inside it, doesn't it mean there is an entire universe under our feet. Heal soil, heal earth, heal ourselves.

My issues went so deep I am talking l-glutamine deficient and my body was getting it from my muscles.

I cannot find the post - but some online troll posted a comment "She has NO credentials". Wrong! I believe his comment was based on his own sexism/mysogony.....she is a young woman, very attractive, blond, slender SO he assumes "she has no credentials". She received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2012 from Boston University School of Medicine and holds a B.S. in chemistry from MIT.
In 2002 Erika founded Science from Scientists, an award-winning National nonprofit focused on improving Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) attitudes and aptitudes for children aged 9-13. She is also the co-founder and Director of Education for Robots In Service of the Environment (RSE), a non-profit organization whose mission is to apply robotic solutions to help solve environmental challenges.
She is a member of the MIT visiting committee for the Dean of Undergraduate Education and is an Advisory Board member for the Ron Burton Training Village. She is also a STEM speaker for the U.S. Speaker Program at the U.S. Department of State.
In 2018 she was awarded the Young Alumni award by Boston University. In 2017 she was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from Boston University School of Medicine Division of Graduate Medical Sciences. In 2014 the Boston Business Journal selected her as one of the 40 Under 40 business and civic leaders who are making a major impact in their respective fields in the Boston area. Her accomplishments have also been recognized by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce’s Pinnacle Awards for Emerging Executive. In 2013 the Boston Chamber of Commerce selected her as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Leaders in Boston. Selected by L’Oreal Paris as a 2007 Woman of Worth for her work with Science from Scientists, Erika has been featured on Lifetime TV and Nova Science Now on The Secret Lives of Scientists and Engineers. She is the host of The Dr. Erika Show, an educational science TV show for children.
Erika served as a Commissioner for the MA Commission on the Status of Women. Erika was Miss Massachusetts 2004 in the Miss America Scholarship program.

People with eczema has leaky guts. However, if the diet isa low salicylate diet, the itchiness goes away, and it seems normal life can be attained. So, yes, the food intake with low salicylate is key to having a healthy. The array of vegetables and fruits are limited, but enough vegetables and fruits with negligent or salicylates can provide vitamins, minerals, and micro biome to those affected by salicylate allerg6 that’s causing leaky guts and eczema. Many experts are not aware of this. The studies are done mostly in Europe and Australia and started to appeared online around 4 years ago.

NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for medical advice. This talk only represents the speaker's personal views and understanding of fermentation and health. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Kathryn Lukas recounts how she traced the extraordinarily good taste of unpasteurized German sauerkraut to unique microbes in a variety of fermented foods and beverages around the world. She encourages us to rekindle the ancient and symbiotic relationship with these beneficial microbes to create our own unique fermented family heirlooms at home. Fermenting with live cultures is a long tradition in human culture from Peru to Korea and Kathryn relates how it may be the future to our collective gut health and well being. Microbe Evangelist Kathryn Lukas is the founder of Farmhouse Culture, a company that makes fermented live-cultured foods and beverages and the bestselling author of The Farmhouse Culture Guide to Fermenting. Kathryn fell in love with fermentation at her restaurant in Germany and upon her return to the U.S., learned how to make live-culture ferments. Obsessed, she traveled the globe in pursuit of ancient fermentation techniques and in 2008 founded her company. She now shares her love and knowledge of fermented, live-culture foods and their powerful healing qualities through workshops and retreats worldwide. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Half the times sauercraut& kimji & pickles all are lazily & super Mistakenly made with pro-gut biotic killer, the Vinegar, instead of yeast etc though, sadly.
Instead of using saliva they can perhaps use strong yeast used in beer fermentation( or even human facial sweat/ tears etc can be better! 😅🤣)
Don't forget there are the ubiquitous & mostlly cheap Plain white yogurt, cottage cheese, etc that's been used in Middleeast, South Asia etc region's countries for centuries as part of meals too.
