this really is a fantastic interview. Elon shares some amazing insight into how he thinks. It shows in the stuff he makes - very much his mental state operates to reduce confusion, noise and drag and cuts to the heart of issues. "If you're living a useful life, that is a good life, a life worth having lived. Like I said, I would encourage people to use the mental tools of physics and apply them broadly in life. They are the best tools."

These are the types of honest conversations that any politician under consideration should be subjected to and not being given the opportunity to waffle or deflect. Without this podcast, I may have painted an entirely different picture of Elon Musk based on mainstream sources.

Has any Government official, Agency, or Country ever asked the “Aliens” for help? Maybe it’s like the Prime Directive on Star Trek where they can’t interfere with other civilizations.
But if the The UN asked or some world official made a plea for help—they might give us a hand?

I also have an invention that will eliminate a race car from loosing rear grip that causes the car to go into a spin. Imagine entering a corner hot and having a technical previous non existing learned skill to control to slow or even bring to a stop the sliding out of cotrol
..loosing the rearend.. prior to my invention once the rear wheel traction goes away , and the spin begins, the driver was basically a passenger . Not any more.

Do not forget Lex works at MIT - the greatest knowledge centre of the world I would venture to claim. So doing this with the greatest technologist of our generation is inspiring. We can just talk to anyone about anything and expand human consciousness. Without judgement or seeing our divides. Great podcast Lex. I am watching so much of your content of late. I am glad I do.

I love the way Elon thinks. It’s like there are 3 axioms being considered all the time: 1) Working with the resources and abilities we have at present 2) working with the idea of a perfect outcome based on moving atoms (mass) from a to b. And 3) how we can meet in the middle of 1 and 2.

I so appreciate Elon’s reduction of complex questions to the gating factors -while looking at the pile of problems to establish a self-sustaining colony on Mars, Elon reduces it to a central big picture question - if we can’t get there (to Mars) the subsequent difficult engineering questions do not matter. In this way, he is focused on both the underlying logic and details but also on the big picture. This takes disciplined thinking coupled with intense mental commitment.
Great job Lex in both creating and asking intelligent questions, but also in providing intentional timing for Elon to formulate his best answer. It seems most interviewers interrupt people like Musk when he is working through the questions that must be solved to arrive at his best answer. A chess grandmaster could answer a question about his tenth move in a theoretical game but he must first play the game in his mind for nine moves to give you his best answer. Knowing when to be quiet while your guest works through some difficult answers is something Lex is unusually good at. Thank you Lex for another great interview!

I loved how Lex let the interview breathe. The moments of silence (where I had to check to see if the video was buffering or stopped) actually added gravitas to the question and subsequent thoughtful response. It was like Elon was playing out all of the probabilities of his responses before answering. Amazing to watch (and listen!) Way better than the WSJ interview… Keep up the great work!

Great interview.. I am struck by Elon’s view that life isn’t already everywhere. I can see why one feels this way but that level of materialism seems Ill founded.
Also, getting to a place like mars only matters if inhabiting it is possible, it goes both ways.
And human eye sight is actually relatively fantastic.

I'm not sure if I'd call Elon a genius but he's definitely very smart nonetheless. The most interesting thing for me (as a software developer) is the amount of details he knows about Tesla FSD implementation details and he still uses lots of his time on SpaceX. If Tesla FSD were the only thing Elon were doing it would be much more expected to know this kind of details.

I like how Lex gives Elon time to frame his answers in a way that even if you don't know much about the topic you can understand.
It looks like Elon hears the question, then if you look in his eyes he's processing about 1000 plus minutae flying through his head related to the topic.
Then he narrows his focus and in a clear and concise manner to give the most relevant answer....i enjoy hearing him speak.

The most shocking of Elon's way of thinking is this: He does not care about being optimistic or pessimistic, he only cares about doing it and finishing the goal. And if I could define his genius is that he knows how to streamline processes, i.e. he did not invent a rocket but he made the most efficient in history. He did not invent the electric car, but he made the most efficient in history.

Loved this interview. I was struck by Elon's advice for life, "Try and be useful." He went on to say that being useful was incredibly difficult. I believe being useful can be simply a state of mind. My daughter manages an AM/PM selling junk food and gasoline. But she is so important for so many people just going through their day. To some many people, filling their tank on the way to work and grabbing a quick cup of coffee and some donuts is such a vital part of their day. My daughter keeps a very clean well stocked store and she is polite and cheerful to everyone she meets. She actually attracts repeat customers. How do I know? Customers have told her so. She is, in short, useful. We all have purpose if we look for it
