Im 44 years old, overweight and overmedicated. When I learned that I have brain lesions MS came up in my search for education. Even if I don't have it this is great info. Better late than never! 2 Reply Agnieszka C. Agnieszka C. 7 years ago This is so far the best TED talk I've seen and an idea truly worth spreading! I don't have MS, but celiac disease. Recently I've become more aware of the amazing power of food, as I can see the immense changes the gluten-free diet has made to my body. Now I'm wiser and try to follow a diet including mostly vegetables, fuits, nuts and seafood. The biggest difference in my diet is using (really) lots of herbs and spices. It's very hard to change your diet so dramatically, but I'm inspired! Thank you! 87 Reply 2 replies Sheila Smith-Ramirez Sheila Smith-Ramirez 8 years ago I liked the video and also believe that you can fight disease with good food. My Mom was very bad with dimentia when I came two years ago to visit her. I stayed and have had her on a strict diet like the one you use, walks in nature and strict sleep routine. There has been such an improvement that she doesn't seem like the same person. She's 82. 77 Reply 1 reply Hayley Pallister Hayley Pallister 8 years ago PLEASE DON'T DELETE Dr. Terry's video, TED! I thought I was a healthy 43-year-old woman until today, but I know that my diet has not been the greatest over the years. I have a high metabolism, and have been able to get away with eating unhealthy, processed foods for years...until now. I will be switching to the "hunter-gatherer" diet immediately, and I will update everyone on my condition in the future months. I am so thankful to have come across this video so early in my disease. I am confident that changing my diet will help to slow or halt the progression of my MS. 188 Reply 27 replies SFC GIJOE1977 SFC GIJOE1977 4 months ago I was diagnosed 3 days ago....I pray her methods help. 4 Reply Malene Skoller Malene Skoller 8 years ago Dr. Terry Wahls is an absolute hero. It is so wonderful to see people taking back their power to heal themselves. Well done dr Terry, you will inspire so many people 4 Reply ComradeKamran95 ComradeKamran95 5 years ago This is the best TED Talk I have ever seen! As a 21 year old who is 120 lbs. overweight, has just had some prostatitis, and is beginning to experience scary symptoms such as frequent thirst/urination (type 2 diabetes) and some blurry vision in my right eye along with numbness and fatigue (MS), this talk hits home so, so hard. Further, I have a dream to be a physician which seems in jeopardy considering my current health. As a student with limited finances, I will try to begin this paleo diet at least partially and hope and pray that it will bring results and save my life. 2 Reply SupernovaPhoenix SupernovaPhoenix 4 years ago This is such a great talk. I love Dr. Terry Wahls! Her research, along with that of Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, has changed my life. I have yet to reach full remission, but I went from being in a rapidly declining state of excruciating chronic pain that was taking away my ability to walk to being able to power walk, hike, bike ride, go to the gym, and preform many other actives that used to be out of the question. Most of us think of our 20's as being the peak of our health, but the peak of my illness hit during my early 20's, and I had emotional breakdowns everyday thinking that I was going to spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair. Now it feels like I'm aging in reverse. I feel younger, healthier, and more alive with every passing day. Whether you are looking to cure/prevent chronic illness or just optimize your body's functioning so that you have the energy to live your life to the fullest, I highly recommend looking into their research. It also takes an open mind and a willingness to let go of previously held beliefs surrounding food. Before the autoimmune protocol, I was eating what most of us would consider to be an extremely healthy diet, but that was clearly not the case. It turned out that most of what I thought I knew about healthy eating was wrong. Dietary ideologies can be dangerous. I decided to experiment, and let my body be the one to tell me what I should and should not eat. 9 Reply Valerie Brown Cheers Valerie Brown Cheers 7 years ago R.I.P. Seems there are many who are controversial about a doctor making such claims, even in the face of the reversal of 2nd stage progressive Multiple Sclerosis. Their arguments against her are ridiculous, feeble and not worth reading in the face of someone whom medicated and cured herself with nothing more than a change of diet and lifestyle. In the physics realm, this is proof of concept and intuitively follows from Newton's third law. The result have been published for around 4 years, so its easy enough to check if you want to see if her case is isolated. But the truth of it is obvious, despite the self interest group that lay disclaimers. I think she deserves praise and should be recognised for her struggle, because make no mistake, her struggle to come back from the progressive debilitations that afflicted her is not only miraculous but something she had to fight for. 21 Reply avi mae avi mae 3 years ago I have a close friend who developed MS 6 years ago. My fiancé was diagnosed in February and from the beginning she has seen a dramatic recovery both in overall wellness and the lesions on her brain. The things that seem to set her and others with MS back most is dairy and gluten. This book WILL give you hope if you have MS, but it’s work. Reply Jacklin Gharibian Jacklin Gharibian 1 year ago Her story is true, emotionally uplifting, and powerful. We can take more steps in this same direction so as to make more gains for our human health given the body and the mind. We need to understand the connections between what the best of Western Medicine and Western Nutrition can offer us with what the best of Eastern Medicine can do to help us cure the most troubling health problems we face. We need to pay more attention to Yin and Yang and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Herbalism, the Raw Vegan Diet, the Hunter and Gatherer Diet, and Holistic Medicine. At the same time, we need to also include Environmental Medicine, Lifestyle Medicine, and Epigenetics into this discussion. Then, we can learn how human psychology and physiology are connected. Hence, there is no need for us to use toxic drugs that are made in the labs by the pharmaceutical industry, because these toxic drugs come with deadly side-effects. The drugs can cause birth defects. The toxic drugs can cause inflammation in the mind and the body. We need to address air and water pollution. We cannot have good health without having access to clean air and clean water. Yet, we are all exposed to toxic chemicals that are added to our drinking water. This is the darker side of life, and most people like to pretend that life is all good. They do not like to look at the darker side of science in the West. We need to understand that we live in a Dystopia, and science in this world is being used to create more suffering and more misery. Bad science, pseudoscience, and medical errors are part of this problem. We need to investigate and research to get to the hidden facts to become informed health consumers. We need to learn how to make healthy food and lifestyle choices, as we learn to co-exist with the non-human forms of life in the environment. Can we end war? Can we live in peace? Is peace possible? We need to learn to treat all forms of life as sacred. We need to learn to co-exist. Hence, we cannot ignore ethical issues that exist in science. We need to understand the laws of nature and the laws of human nature from a moral, ethical, spiritual, and religious perspective. Furthermore, in order to understand science, we also need to study the connections that exist in art and in science. Art seeks the truth, just as much as science seeks the truth. We cannot ignore art, and we cannot push it aside and think that art does not matter in this discussion. Art, itself, can be a form of therapy. Art is used in medicine and in psychology as a form of therapy. We need to understand how art and the science of illusions can change the way think so that we can learn the laws of science. We need to take a multi-disciplinary approach to solve our problems. Western science is connected to Eastern science. Science will not give us all of the answers, so we will need to pay attention to the world of illusions (art, magic, and religion). Art and religion are connected to the laws of nature and science This is the all-inclusive approach to solving the great problems of our day. 4 Reply Elaine Saghafian Elaine Saghafian 3 years ago Hi Dr. Wahls, thanks you SO much for sharing this info!! It helps but I think It still needs tweaking. I don't have dairy, gluten, sugar, most fruits (just bloat me and make me feel rough), tea, coffee, chocolate, alcohol. I'm looking into grass fed beef but don't really eat red meat except occasionally and it's from the supermarket. Mainly eat turkey (supermarket) and salmon (wild fresh or tinned). I eat lots of veg and salad stuff but not Kale or seaweed so am considering adding these. I'm having a slice of gluten free bread or gluten free muesli in the evening and have been eating a tiny piece of potato with my meat and veg in the evening. I can't cope with carbs through the day. On this diet are nuts/beans/peas allowed and should I cut out the gluten free bread, potato and gluten free muesli? Any advice much appreciated. Thank you Reply laura jones-miller laura jones-miller 8 years ago Thank you Dr. Wahl for this valuable and comprehensive information. I am a raw vegan and following a plan which is 80 percent of the same raw fruits and vegetables you displayed in your lecture. The other 20 percent are 10 percent for protein in the form of sprouted beans, sprouted tofu and seeds such as chia, hemp and flax, and occasionally cooked beans, The final 10 percent is in the form of fats which are also from the seeds, some nuts, and tofu. I eat seaweed almost daily because I love it. I do not eat any type of animals products. I am nearly 60 and have no health problems. My bone density is at the 20-30 year old range. I had Hep C for 25 years and was cured with the new drug teleprevir (interferon, and riboviron) cocktail two years ago. I went into anemic shock after 6 weeks of treatment and required blood transfusions (ironic, as this is how I acquired the Hep C in the first place) and hospitalization. I went vegan after the first chemo treatment of interferon and riboviron, ten years ago, had failed. I researched diets that would be less taxing on my liver. The over-whelming consensus was for a vegan diet. On a vegan diet I remained "healthy enough" to continue teaching, body-building, doing gymnastics, and doing power yoga. One year ago, I found an amazing yoga teacher named Ali Kamenova, who introduced me to the 80-10-10 raw vegan diet...The change has been incredible. I have bi-annual check-ups and blood tests. Every function in my body is either normal or better. I feel amazing. I do supplement b12. Excuse the lengthy description, but I thought it was necessary for understanding what type of health issues had effected me. I would like to know what your opinion is on the omission of the grass-fed meats, organ meats, and omega rich fish. Do you feel they are necessary in the diet you chose and developed? Or, do you think that a vitamin and mineral rich plant=based diet is adequate for a healthy body? I am so impressed with the amazing progress you made. I would respect what you have to say about this. Thank you so much for your time, Laura Jones-Miller 20 Reply 19 replies Madison Madison 1 year ago Amazing, thank you! I did what she said, after one year I was able to do another MRT and the lesion which may suggest i have MS got alot smaller! And: it's not expensive if you start growing sprouts - once you have the glasses (in which they grow) and the seeds you can grow your sprouts yourself - they have a lot more vitamins, minerals and all the good stuff the full grown vegetable has. And you don't need to eat 3 plates a day, these sprouts have all the minerals, vitamins in it, you just need to eat a spoon of it per day - and you WILL FEEL a change! And i eat al lot of fish (every second day). I noticed i can think much clearer, i was suddenly able to have my rhetorical skills back (i love talking with people, but i started to "fade away" when i wanted to answer). I thank god for this Ted-Talk. This woman has changed my life. I lost 15 kg in the last year (i'm 1,8m and 60 kg - which is the perfect weight for me) and feel much much healthier. Especially if you're from the US - i know you have to pay for a doctors visit and you delay this to the point you can't anymore. It's a shame (us healthcare) - i'm from europe and here is everything free (and as good as in the us, or even better... the Saudi princes/princesses are always coming here for a doctors visit), must be even worse if you live there. After looking through numerous articles and finally watching this video, I am thoroughly convinced that grain does nothing but harm. So, I'm completely cutting out grain and SOME dairy products from my diet! Leaving me with all the really tasty stuff! No more sandwiches or cookies or cakes for me unless I want to randomly indulge (or maybe just for my b-day, idk)! I'd like to thank mother earth for providing me with paleolithic instincts that's really saved me thus far! Otherwise, I'd be suffering right now without it, because my family seems to have a bit of a history of certain diseases (like diabetes and such) that's apparently caused by grain (what I've learned in my extensive research), and I didn't want to get in on that if it were possible (no one does!!!). Also, my immune system is great, I rarely get sick. My metabolism is working considerably well. In fact, I should be eating //more// because I'm underweight compared to my height!!! XD Aaaand, after putting more grain in my diet than usual this past year, I've noticed a steady decline in just... happiness in general. I used to have more enthusiasm to DO things, like exercise and draw (I love to draw!). Ever since I started eating more bread and dairy, I just feel horrible now... Tired all the time. Mentally exhausted (social situations tire me out and I want to run to videogames or a computer to escape). Overall depressed and irritable (//especially// irritable). I suddenly started //hating// things for no reason! Plus, I've noticed that my heart palpitations have become... more frequent than usual... It's rather frightening... Dunno if its the grains or something else, or a combination, but hopefully a diet change and up in exercise will do the trick!!! -laughs nervously As soon as I go back to MY diet (which happens to follow the Paleo diet), exclude grain, and I start feeling better, I'll be sure to leave another comment! If I don't feel better, weeeellll... I'd have to do more research, lol. :3 Reply James Rendek James Rendek 9 years ago Dr. Wahl's makes a lot of sense. We need more thinkers like her. She presents her findings and shows her own experience as an example. Then she sites her research and gives scientific examples of hunter gatherer success for being disease free. I don't understand that she, as an actual doctor, with supportive evidence, should be discredited like this. She is not saying she has cured her disease but that she has found a way to diminish the symptoms without the use of drugs and lives a better life thanks to a healthy diet. She goes on to say that a more nutrient rich diet can prevent disease in the first place, with scientific evidence based on research. Her talk is relative to others in her category. It should not be flagged. After all thousands of other people have had same or similar results with eating a nutrient rich diet. It's disturbing that TED is still posting "warnings" all over this video. Wahls is careful to say she is only describing her experiences and speculating about the relationship between diet and the control of diseases. Many people I know lost respect for TED after it went on the warpath against this video, and a few others (while allowing some videos that make blatantly ridiculous claims to go without warnings). TED, for example, has labeled discussions of the dangers of GMO foods (filled with toxic insecticides) as pseudo-science, and has posted statements on the "virtues" of Dean Ornish's dangerous vegan diets, based on the worst kind of pseudo-science. 109 Reply 9 replies ilovegoth ilovegoth 5 years ago I enjoyed this video very much. I can't even hand him 1 carrot stick a month. He says it tastes terrible. I do however have to give him a break because raw fruits give him terrible gas and so I never try and push my fresh fruit salad on him. My 16 o is a challenge because he became vegetarian and he is underweight and sometimes skips meals. I also work FT and my husband does not work, yet he dislikes cooking. All around it makes for stress. My son takes half after me so he does eat some raw fruits and veggies I make. Reply j jock j jock 3 years ago I am a 31 year survivor with a myeloproliferative neoplasm (both PV and MF), polymyalgia, and newly developed adrenal insufficiency. I have been very conscientious about my diet, and for many years have been taking most of what Dr Wahl is recommending. My problem is, that I am stuck on prednisone because as soon as I get the CRP down and reduce the prednisone dose, the polymyalgia recurrs. Several specialists have just completed a thorough series of tests to rule out a carcenoid tumour, all the organs look great, so now it is a matter of how to get off the prednisone. I have been reading the research papers, and came across a supplement called PQQ, which has been shown in small scale studies to reduce inflammation and positively affect the mitochondria. I am hoping this will be the key to getting off the prednisone. It has saved my life, but now it is in the process of killing me. I am grateful that this talk was recommended to me, and I want to say that I wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for the internet and my ability to do my own research. It was at my insistence that I started on interferon in 2000, which negated the need for a bone marrow transplant. We really do have to be our own advocates when it comes to diseases that don't fit inside the cookie cutter. My wife has Huntington's Disease and we clearly must try this. She is losing the ability to walk safely and although gene silencing therapies exist they are unavailable due to bureaucratic barriers. Her care facility is not equipped to provide such a diet and, in any event, insurance doesn't cover this kind of diet and her illness has left us impoverished. I'll find some way to get her this diet. Having said that Dr. Wahls doesn't address an important issue, probably because she is simply unaware of it: Civilization has been selecting for a different kind of diet for long enough that there are pronounced differences in dietary requirements between human populations. Even within Europeans, Mediterraneans are more tolerant of grain cultivars (starch) than are northern Europeans. This has the insidious effect of making the more civilized professions, such as medical science, biased toward the needs of those populations and neglecting the needs of those less adapted to agriculture. This is even more insidious as it is a group evolutionary strategy to engage in such neglect -- a kind of subtle, even unconscious, warfare. 4 Reply Denise Irish Denise Irish 2 years ago Thank you for sharing your free life saving information. My friend who has MS and frankly is not getting much positive or helpful support so I am researching it.Why doesnt she research it herself?...she probably will in time but right now she is not in a good place and has not been for some time.By the time she is in a right place, this way, we will have tried a lot of stuff and eliminated those that do not work and found some that do.Frankly I am hoping the diet and changes in lifestyle will break the trend and shift her into the "Right Place" For the record I am not just using Dr Wahls book as a reference but also using a couple other solid references. They may not agree with Dr Wahls on certain details ( research in MS seems to be moving faster now) but basically they are all on the same page. In short what Dr Wahls suggests makes sense and is backed up by others who are also respectable authorities. My friend is has been doing very little of the recommended things ,lol none ...so far!, and her "professional support" has suggested almost none of them and even then only in vague and misleading terms. For example, case of organ meats the recommended amount is 12 ounces/week. (In the Wahls Paleo and Wahls Paleo Plus) This is equivalent to 360 grams/week. It seems to me a small amount. It's only about a plate of organ meat. I'm not sure that I counted well. In the light of the importance of organ meats which contain nutrients include for example the coenzyme. And case of other meats , the recommended quantities are 9-21 ounces/day (Wahls Paleo) It is 270-630 grams/day. Sure to be well counted? Eating the whole seed will just go through you with no nutritious benefit. I believe it is best to get your nutrients from plant based diet if possible. Reply Jakob wiwel Jakob wiwel 8 years ago Can't help thinking that our otherwise interesting, progressive and colourful species (which overall i love and admire), are not only causing self-inflicted problems on a larger social, cultural and global scale, but we are in fact the main contributors to our own individual daily physical and mental suffering. Couldn't it actually be that a general increase in awareness, (based on making rational decisions relying both on evidence-based science and the vast knowledge we already have with in behind all the noise of modern days multiple appearence management paradigms) would equal an inversely proportional decline in physical and mental problems(I realise that it would be impossible to quantify something as intangible as awareness and physical/mental suffering)? In this presentation, the topic is about our daily food intake which, of course, is essential to all the chemical processes in our organism and therefor a key factor in the state of being, both mentally and physically. But lately I seem to come across so much information about so many aspects of the human and human-race, and to me it seems that the über-key factor in reducing suffering is not all the goodhearted initiatives we engage in on a broader basis. They are a present necessity (which we of course have to carry on engaging in and actually intensify a whole lot) caused by a society model which, to a greater extent is built on individual materialistic values and goals and to a lesser extent on collective awareness and solidarity. It seems to me that fundamental evolution of the human race has a lot more to do with individual evolution than trying to control a collective evolution. An individual evolution ( large numbers and over a certain period of time which probably counts hundreds or even thousands of years) will automatically lead to a greater, over-all quality of life for the entire biological life-sphere. I am just a layman who couldn't even finish a university degree and hence have no answers, methods and least of all any scientifically based- models, -results or insights on whether or not my thoughts/ intuition has any real possibilities. That's not science (and goes borderline crackpot so it actually LOSES the translation of her important message). On a side note, in addition to the fish oil and multivitamin I normally take, I embarked on a personal quest to attempt to eat healthier several months ago (even though I'm not overweight and I have a metabolism that is much more active than most people my age). I did this by cutting way back on soda (which I can barely even touch anymore, my body doesn't want it), subbing in drinking green tea, cutting back on candy and sweets, subbing in nuts and dried fruits for snacks, eating fish or shrimp at least once a week, subbing honey for processed sugar anywhere I could, and eating grains and vegetables for breakfast (radishes being my favorite breakfast food). I have noticed that not only has my stamina improved, but my overall mood always seems to be good now. In addition, I can also think faster and concentrate better than I did before. Needless to say, I will NOT be returning to my old eating habits, as I rather enjoy my new ones profusely. So, I am a firm believer that diet can help, although I will say that different bodies respond in different ways when it comes to diet. The principle is the same though, if you want a healthier body, you must eat things that are healthy for you and forego the things that are not healthy for you. 1 Reply electronikadze. electronikadze. 6 months ago So basically Paleo diet, right? Reply Free Anderson Free Anderson 9 years ago We can sit here and cite research until the cows come home, but the simple fact of the matter is that when it comes to meat there is great disparity in the scientific community regarding what is healthful and is not healthful. I am still waiting for any real science to prove any of what she is saying to be correct. Im not saying diet isnt important, but not relevant to autoimmune diseases. Also, humans today have a much more nutritionally diverse diet then they did during other points in history, and if the development of ms was related to the quality of ones diet the easiest way would be to find the link between how much money someone makes and their likelihood of developing diseases. It is well known in western countries the rich eat healthier because they can afford it. If there was a link, a study could easily show that the aggression of, or chances of developing ms, are related to income 1 Reply 2 replies Brandon O'Duinn Brandon O'Duinn 2 years ago HEY TRYNA BUY SUMN Reply Tengiz Cengiz Tengiz Cengiz 3 years ago 9:00 Reply I’m braking through I’m braking through 1 year ago 4:00 Reply Valentas Dicevicius Valentas Dicevicius 8 years ago All you vegan fanatics, none of the tribes around the world were vegans. Reply NMJ NMJ 9 years ago God GAVE Humans ALL the Beast of the fields, birds of the air and living being in the sea, WE are too eat meat to survive, I'm sorry you cant see that , any thing in over consumption is bad for you, i have a friend who is a vegan and shes very anemic the Drs told her to eat some meat, now she has meat once a week and is much better...Humans are NOT evil to eat any animal, Seems some people put animals on a higher level then there own families Reply Christine Lough Christine Lough 9 years ago Oh Stop. Nothing is easy. Land that can support grazing cattle can't necessarily be used to raise broccoli or raspberries, or any kind of fruit or veggie. Your response was a throw-away answer. You should consider running for public office. Reply Don M Don M 6 years ago This makes no sense. Why promote eating biological material for vitamins and minerals? The dose you receive is notoriously variable. Why not figure out the dose you need and take a pill, that way you're not under or overdosed? "My" showing lack of emotional poise? "My" out? At least I know the difference between a verb and a possessive pronoun and with my diet, "under-carbed" isn't possible. You've once again made multiple assumption without sufficient evidence and drawn multiple compound conclusions from them. You've refuted nothing and it's clear that you don't have any command of logic or the English language. You have all the freedom in the world to choose your foods but to scare chronically people away from Dr. Wahl's protocol is not in the best interests of those who could be helped. Reply Edmond Dantès Edmond Dantès 9 years ago I haven't been "pounding" on anything, that's just one more assumption on your part to demonstrate your faulty thought processes. You've been ignoring data from the beginning of our discussion and you can't read minds yet you're more than willing to stack such assumptions upon other assumption in an attempt to further your agenda. Critical thinking isn't your strong point but I won't blame that on protein deficiency. Reply kayumochi kayumochi 9 years ago You are not doing anyone a favor by moralistically promoting your dietary choices. Reply Edmond Dantès Edmond Dantès 9 years ago Removal of your own posts is very telling. You're portrayal of the evolution of the human race is highly flawed. Reply Michelle Lewis Michelle Lewis 7 years ago Have just viewed this shocking video. A Doctor promoting health. What is she thinking? Is this not against some oath or other. I am a disgustingly healthy 71 yr old, still run, take no medication and have been eating this way for years. If I can't kill it, pick it or dig it up I dont eat it. My mitochondria thank me. 9 Reply
