Today I’m taking this Amtrak sleeper train across the USA from New York to Los Angeles. The journey will take around 62 hours, passing through 12 states and 3,000 miles. I’m actually taking my Dad along with me today so let’s see how we get on in a roomette, and then for the longer stage of the journey the Amtrak Bedroom. I’ll show you what the dining options are like for each meal, the variety of classes, from First Class to coach and how you shower onboard. This is one of the longest train journeys I’ve taken to date and I can’t wait to share with you each step of the way.
Now this is a little different to many of my other train adventures, you can't exactly call this luxury but it's iconic and showcases the excitement of travelling across the entire continent of North America by train. You see things differently when crossing by rail.

I’m a 70yo disabled veteran and I’ve always wanted to take a trip like this. Since I’m trying to survive on Social Security here in NY i couldn’t afford to take a trip like this. This video is absolutely great and I’m very thankful you shared it with all of us. God bless you and Thank You so very much.

Watching this was hard. I lost my dad in 2018. From 2007-2010, I worked for an airline and was able to treat him to multiple trips - NYC, MIA, and a random trip to Tucson where we rented a car and drove to Tombstone. Looking back, I was naive and never would've imagined that 10 years later, he'd be gone. I miss him, and am so glad you're sharing your trip with your dad. Such a great man.

25:53-26:02. "Travel by rail is not about saving time or money, but instead it’s about escaping to a bubble of a simpler time. And for that, I love it.”
I'm glad you got to experience this trip with your father. And thank you for your POV about different types of travel and different strengths of each. Bubbles sound wonderful these days.

I'm glad you took your dad with you on this trip. When I was five my mom and I took an Amtrak from Michigan to California. Despite developing an inner ear infection on the way there, I had a great time. She passed away last June and after watching this video I've dug out the album with our pictures from that trip. One of these days I'll have to do this again.

Love that you were in NM, my home state! I'm just a bit south of Raton and a bit north of Albuquerque, in Santa Fe! You really did it right. From the sheer size to the amazing varying scenery, to the extreme weather, you can say that you truly experienced the US with your dad! Great memories you'll have, and I'm so grateful that you shared! I also love how much you valued the experience with your dad. As someone that no longer has living parents, I can say those experiences are priceless.

As a True & Blue Yankee, born in Philadelphia, & presently living in San Diego, I always find it fascinating to see see things from the perspective of foreigners as they explore the USA 🇺🇸. This was an excellent video, featuring quality time with your Dad. And, actually, I was quite surprised at the end when you revealed the cost of the trip. Honestly, I thought it was going to be a lot more expensive. I think I'm going to take this trip (in the opposite direction) one day with my wife. She is Brazilian, from Rio de Janeiro--so, this would be a great way to show her a large bit of her new country.

I have to say, one of my favourite vids so far from Trek Trendy... so awesome. From the epic journey itself to the undeniable #feels related to watching a boy getting to spend quality time with his Dad, this was SO good to watch. And I just want to thank you for making such great, high quality content. Seriously - you must spend so much time creating these reviews, complete with great footage and interesting factoids about the trip and the various stops...its such good viewing. Thank you!

I travelled LA to NY on Amtrak in 2005 via Chicago and DC. Coach the whole way! Despite that, fantastic experience, this video has brought back fond memories of a stop in Albuquerque where we got off the train for Mexican food, crossing that bridge in Iowa (in daylight!) and a trip up the Sears Tower and a deep pan pizza in Chicago. Would love to do it again.

I think it is absolutely incredibly sweet that you are spending this trip with your dad! Your papa is absolutely darling. If I could have done this with my parents, I would have thoroughly enjoyed it! As a kid, I always used to dream of going coast to coast on a train - of course that was the 70s! I still kind of want to do it, but it doesn't have the allure as it once did. Thank you so much for this video - it was so terrific to get that insider's view of what it is like to actually do it!

What an amazing journey that was! Fun fact, 108 is actually a Heritage Unit. It’s painted in the Phase VI Livery for Amtrak’s 50th Anniversary.
Also, it seems you also saw Amtrak 824 on the Southwest Chief. 824 was originally built as a P40DC, the predecessor to the P42DC, and while many P40s and in storage, the Auto Train does use P40s, and some P40s still roam the rails. I myself have seen P40s used on the Silver Star a couple times.

I know they aren't the main focus of the videos, but your shots of the countryside passing by are gorgeous. The image of the mesa outside the dining room table while waiting for lunch in New Mexico (21:28) is beautiful, for one example.
Thank you for sharing all the parts of your travels, not only the modes of transportation but the scenery, too.

My apologies if this was mentioned elsewhere: The Lake Shore Limited originated on the New York Central in 1897 and ran until 1956; it was supplanted by the 20th Century Limited that started in 1948. Amtrak brought back the name when it took over intercity rail passenger service in 1971. Also, the Mississippi River crossing you showed at 13:44 is of the eastbound California Zephyr at Burlington, Iowa. The bridge pictured is a drawbridge (more accurately a "lift bridge" where one entire span lifts) while the bridge at Fort Madison, Iowa is a swing bridge, where the main span swings 90 degrees.

Pretty cool that you were able to do this trip with your Dad! One of my few regrets with my Dad, who passed away a few years ago, is that we never did anything like this. Even though I offered to make it happen, he just wasn't interested. Doesn't mean I won't be doing this trip, just means he won't be there, well maybe in spirit?

I've just come back from a long rail journey that included the Lakeshore Limited. I couldn't help immediately noticing the very strange route you assigned it, which shows it as much more direct than it actually is. In fact, the train goes due north to Albany and then due west to Buffalo, from where it hugs the lakes to Chicago. That said, I'm sure many have dreamed that such a direct route between New York City and Buffalo would be created!

Great example that train travel is not about traveling cheap as some think. Train travel is about enjoying getting to the destination vs the destination itself. You can do Albany to Los Angeles in 8.5 hours (with a 50 min layover) for less than $300. You will get to see things via rail and meet people for an extended time as well picking up experiences.

Several years back I had been assigned to bedroom A and found it most uncomfortable, the four others have considerably more room. Also the WC/shower door fully opens as well. I use a travel agent and have refused to accept A on the trip CHI to LAX. Service was great and their food is really good. The situation may be different for you, but I am on a cane and hobble along. Great video!

Nice content, pleasantly presented. I've traveled via train here in the US several times in my life (including on the pre-Amtrak Southern Crescent). I haven't looked through your vids yet but if you haven't been on the Empire Builder, I highly recommend the route (Chicago to either Seattle or Portland). My first time was in a roomette on the then-new Superliner cars and then more recently after moving to North Dakota. The bedrooms are nice but I've always been pleased with the roomettes, especially if downstairs with restroom and shower access near at hand. The cars (carriages) these days are a mixture of wear and tear but the service and food is usually very good. :)

Your trip brought back wonderful memories for me. I've taken this trip to LA a few times since I don't fly anymore. I live in NJ, but I like leaving for Chicago from NYC. It's the shortest route to get to LA via train. I always enjoyed the extended stop in Albuquerque, NM, and to get a chance to pick up some jewelry from the Native Americans. Things have certainly changed since the pandemic. Coach passengers used to be able to have meals in the dining car, along with the First Class/Sleeper passengers. My favorite breakfast is the French Toast. I'm a new subscriber, and I look forward to viewing your other videos. Thank you for sharing your journey.

It's always funny as a regular commuter through Chicago to see people using the Great Hall as the entrance instead of the commuter entrance a block east right off the river. Nothing wrong with it at all--and honestly probably better for everyone, it's mad there during commuter hours--but still takes me aback for a minute. And I was laughing a little about the temperature, but only from commiseration. Standing on the outdoor platforms as express trains go blasting by while you wait for a local on days even colder than when you were there are bitter to say the least.
You and your dad had quite the adventure! Thanks for taking us along! I love all your videos, but the train videos are a special favorite.

Glad you got to experience Toledo! It’s a big city of ours and it used to be the steel capital of the world! unfortunately it’s very run down now…..however the steel mills were run by the Italian-American mafia who actually my cousin’s husbands grandfather was part of, and it’s sad to see it be run down in many places. Deep thanks for this adventure. It has been many years (about 41of them) since I took the Lake Shore Limited from Chicago to Boston (return) for the first time. (I had started my journey in Carbondale, Illinois, on the City of New Orleans.) The good news is that they have gotten new train cars since then. But the bad news is that the wonderful Amtrak breakfasts of yore appear to be just a memory.
What a delightful trip to share with your Dad. (Although I think your Mom’s cross-Atlantic cruise was the better deal!) Thank you for the reminders of trips with my folks. And thank you for taking us along on your adventures. Buen viaje!

It brought my memory of my trip on Amtrack.
I moved with my wife and son from Hawaii to Boston. And we took family room in Amtrack from L.A to New York and to Boston. After Chicago train stopped in the night for long time and later I found the train had accident with a truck.
It was 1989 and the family room costed around 5000 dollars.
It was fantastic trip.

My family and I rode the Southwest Chief in the coach section from Kansas City to Los Angeles in 2013 and it was wonderful! In your video you said that coach passengers do not have access to the dining car. As I stated above, we rode in coach during that trip and we had access to the dining car, albeit our meals were not included in our ticket price and we had to pay separately. Also, the coach seats were plenty comfortable for two nights of sleeping during that trip. Thanks for all the great videos!

Great video! I see some people repeating the "Travel by rail is not about saving time or money, but instead it’s about escaping to a bubble of a simpler time" quote, and you know i really feel like rail travel really should be about saving time and money. Comparable flights from ny to la and vice versa are immensely cheaper, but imagine if the train ride was. It's just so much better than flying, it's very leisurely and boarding is much less of a process than boarding a plane is. and imagine if these were high speed rail, how long would it take to get to your destination? It would probably be shortened to a day or 2, im not good with time lol. But either way that would be amazing. And again, great video, it seemed like such a nice trip you and your dad had :)

Love this. I'm one of the few Americans would rather take the train than fly places, but I've never done this.
P.s. if you swap your pillow to the other end of the bed, it's a lot easier to get in and out of those top bunks...you can just kind of dive in and out lol

Taking a similar trip with my fiance in April, just in the other direction. Salt Lake to Miami. We didn't do a sleeper, but the economy seats will be plenty fine for the both of us. He's lives in the UK so he's used to the nice fast trains and I've never gotten to take Amtrak as I'm in Idaho (but we may get our line back open which is cool!) Then we have a cruise across the Atlantic to get back to Europe! It's gonna be a month of just journey and I'm so excited C: Last time I was on a train in the US (since we've taken it plenty in the UK) I was 3 or 4 years old in Washington state

My elderly dad was a major train fan and loved Amtrak train journeys. We were tossing around ideas about an Amtrak adventure but unfortunately he died from colon cancer about a year ago. My point being (and you know this already): treasure the time you have with your old man because he won't be around forever.

This is awesome. Man, I wish I could’ve done something like this while my dad was alive. He was killed in a car accident when I was in my early 20’s, he was only 60.
Do more of this, dude, as often as you can. Drink it all in while you’re both still of able body and sound mind.
Also, your pops seems like a funny dude. I think we’d all appreciate a little more lens time from dad, next trip. Dads being dads will always be entertaining. You can count on them for the best candid reactions/responses.

Your Chicago to San Francisco Amtrak video has been in my watch later playlist for several months. I still haven’t watched it, or any of your other videos. Today this video popped up while I was randomly scrolling through YouTube. AWESOME VIDEO! I’ll be watching more of your videos.
One question: Which do you prefer on Superliner trains, upper or lower level room?
I had a lower level room once. It was nice because there was virtually no passenger traffic by my room, but the rail noise was kind of annoying when it came time to sleep.

NY has 2 Canadian trains actually one to Toronto and one to Quebec! (all trains in the state of NY beyond Albany are so infrequent and delayed no one really counts them as an option lol especially in buffalo a WAY bigger metro than Albany that gets barely any trains) They both are ran by VIA across the border you should try one of them sometime maybe the Quebec train, not as many people do that train!
Also i'm 90% sure amtrak lounges have showers you can use free lol i wish you showed us the virgin hotel room! i did not know they had hotels

What are your thoughts on the UKs Mk3s. Do you like them? Personally, I love them, although they are quite old, I find them very comfy. It was time for the Great Western HSTs to be replaced, but the new trains need some improvements. IMO. You should try the via rail Canadian to experience the US mk3/HST equivalent. Streamliners from the 50s were the best!

Pretty cool, @22:30 that little housing area is part of my Rez, Kewa Pueblo. I live in SoCal and always take the 16hr Southwest Chef ride to get home instead of flying..Coach of course! It's not as bad as a lot of people would think. I meet and have had many drinks with a lot of cool people. Also Coach passengers do get access to the Dining Car, they go through Coach asking anyone if they want to make reservations. I usually sleep in the observation car where you can lay down. They let you, as long as you're up before 6am, I think, I'm always up at 4am on the train. I gotta try a Roomette!

Interesting to see the wheelchair symbol on one of the doors. Wonder if the train is fully accessible with accessible rooms etc? Watching this thinking I’d love to have a travel but as a full time wheelie I thought it wouldn’t be possible. Off to google at the end of the video!

Another fantastic and entertaining video! You are super polite and maybe will not cover the topic explicitly, but going #2 on the train to me when you have a roomete or lesser class accommodations seems kind of nasty like it's not worth the trip for leisure. Getting the hotel in the middle won't always be an option. The one time I was on Amtrak I wouldn't want to sit on the toilet it was like a port-a-john and really dirty. For sure not the Orient Express Amtrak is, but are the bathrooms gross or not so bad?

Whenever you get around to travelling on the VIA Rail "The Canadian", make sure you don't do it in winter. First I would highly reccommend the prestige class. Recently renovated cars for the Prestige class passengers that are fantastic. Secondly, don't make the trip in winter! If you having a hard time with -20C, well parts of Canada with the wind chill in winter can hit up to -50C. The Canadian though is an amazing trip, though for some reason the tickets are cheaper if you start out of Vancouver, British Columbia compared to starting out of Toronto, Ontario. I believe the last time I checked prestige class is about $1200 difference, not sure why though.
