Autophagy is the natural cellular recycling process that rids our body of old or malfunctional protein. This sets in motion the process of rejuvenation as our body rebuilds new proteins to replace the old ones. Autophagy is a powerful method of healing and is best activated by fasting. I'm grateful for excellent vids like this where Dr. Fung does a nice job of explaining the science behind the benefits of fasting that help keep me motivated. After yrs of plant based/standard caloric restriction, the drop in body fat composition & increased energy with fasting/keto is astonishing.

I’ve been doing 17 hrs a day of fasting for five days and I’ve lost one inch off my waist. My energy levels and mental clarity is amazing nowadays. I’ve been prediabetic and have hypertension for a few years already. My blood sugar levels and blood pressure have been normal the last few days.. I just wish I had found these videos years ago!

Autophagy is really powerful. I lost nearly 95% of chronic inflammation lower back pain, back pain that has been lasting for over 3 years. After refeeding I'm still not returning back to the usual but in a healthier state. Other than that, my liver biomarker has improved drastically by 50% from an advanced fatty livers.

I want to Thank You Dr. Fung I found one of your videos on fasting and the biggest losers 1 year ago before I was going in for a surgery. Started fasting worked up to one meal a day went from 240 to 190 at 5’11”. I turn 60 in a month my goal now is to get to 185 the same weight I came out of high school at. Doing this for a year with no problem I think proves to me I will do this for the rest of my life. Could not have done it without you and Dr. Ekberg love him as well. Thanks Again

Jason... I don't know if you read these comments, but your videos have helped me a lot, and allowed me to lose a bunch of weight and get off insulin.
I did have a significant medical issue this last week, that was related to my super low carb diet. I was going a bit crazy with sodium, adding salt to my eggs, and eating a lot of sausage. Also, a few spoons a day of salted natural peanut butter and cottage cheese, both of which are high sodium foods.
It seems that all of this sodium made my BP spike and caused weird headaches.... Now that I've cut back the salt, and unfortunately started taking 40mg Lisinopril qd, things are getting under control... hopefully I can d/c or at least reduce the Lisinopril soon.
Just a heads up to people who are going low carb... watch the sodium!

I enjoy your videos and have been doing IF and learning more as I go along my weight loss since March 14 pounds 😂 without the “diet” struggles and one thing is my appetite has been reduced and I no longer struggle with trying to stop eating as I feel full and can just stop eating😱

Thankyou Dr. Fung... you clear things up tremendously. My question is how easy is it to inadvertantly drop out of autophagy during a fast? I regularly fast for anywhere from 3 to 4 days up to 11 or 12 days and I feel amazing, have lost loads of weight and have 'cured' my painful wrist, thumb and left knee over the last 6 months. But, I drink one strong coffee in the morning, red-bush (rooibos) tea throughout the day and sip on 2 litres of 'Lo-Salt' water (KCl and NaCl) to stay hydrated. Has the coffee and red-bush (caffeine-free btw) been pushing me out of autophagy?
Perhaps someone here might shed some light on this for me... I'd be very grateful.

There should be a balance between breaking things down and building things up. That principle is applicable in biology and can be generalized to nearly everything in this world. Going too far to one extreme or another is the root of nearly all forms of dysfunction and unhappiness. Thank you Dr. Fung for being the foremost voice in emphasizing the need for such balance in our dietary habits way BEFORE it became the popular thing for diet gurus to advocate.

Dr. Fung, I was having a terrible time with intermittent fasting. Every time I skip breakfast by lunch time my stomach hurts. This happened repeatedly. I figured that I just couldn't skip a meal. It doesn't work for me. Then, I discovered what the problem was. It wasn't the fasting that made my stomach hurt, it was the coffee. Even though I was skipping breakfast, I was still having a cup of coffee with heavy cream and butter. That helped me be full until lunch. But then my stomach would really hurt. I quit the coffee, now, no problem. I have no problem drinking water. Have you ever heard about coffee being an irritant when fasting?

I've watched dozens of videos and read lots of websites that talk about autophagy, but this had a great balance of talking about the details of different kinds of autophagy without going into too much technical details about things that a layperson struggles to understand. It would be great if you could follow this video up with a technique video -- i.e. HOW to fast to achieve different kinds of autophagy for different goals. Looking forward to the next video.

Such an incredible bonus to fasting for weight loss. Would've liked to hear more specifics like how many hours you need to fast to get a good amount of autophagy. The app I use to track my fasting (fastic) says after 16 hours it begins, so I am I right to assume my normal 23:1 regimen is getting me autophagy every day? Lately I've been considering throwing in one or two 48-hour fasts per week since I am not hungry anymore, even at my mealtime. I enjoy eating a lot, but I don't have the physiological need after a 24 hr fast, it's all just for pleasure at this point. So why not try some 48 hour ones? Think I will skip my dinner tonight and see how it goes.

I love the way you broke that down. I'm 52 years old, 5 foot 1 and need to lose about 80 pounds. I started intermittent fasting about a month ago for weight loss. I haven't lost any weight yet but my fingernails are back to being hard and sturdy after constantly chipping and breaking for the last 4 years and my energy level has gone up. I was a junk food junky for years and thought i would feel like I was dieing from starvation doing the 16:8 fasting but that didn"t happen.

Really appreciated how mTOR and Insulin relate to protein and carbs respectively. When I was doing alternate day fasting I noticed that weight would steadily and slowly decline, then pause for a few days… while waistline seemed to shrink (but weight stayed the same). This cycle would repeat a number of time as I lost about 25kgs. So I’m wondering if the body has some mode whether it is burning autophagic debris or it is burning fat. Ideas?

From 2010-2011 i lost 75 kilos doing calorie restriction. Worst years of my life where i ended up needing b12 and iron injections and doc considered me borderline malnourished. Yes i lost the weight, but i was not functioning. Sleeping 10 h a night plus nap during the day. I got praise for losing weight, but when i tried to tell them i didnt feel better, in-fact i felt worse, i was looked at like I was stupid. Losing weight is “good for you”, right? My son told me i had slurred speech and at times i talked in slow motion. I did not notice this myself really. And now we are talking about my maintenance period AFTER i lost weight. I could after a year maintaining that new weight, STILL not eat more than 1300-1400 calories a day, without GAINING weight. I got fed up and started eating 1600-1800 a day, and felt better. But weight slowly came back even tho i still kept an eye on calories. I was convinced my body was trying to get back to my highest weight and sucked up ever calorie i ate. Watching Dr, Fungs videos put words and scientific explanations to what i lived through. 3 years ago when i started keto to try lose weight again, i felt like a new person. OMAD came naturally due to less hunger, and i loved my “keto brain” as i called it when talking about it with others. I felt creative again for first time in years. I had less pain in the surrounding tissue of my hip joint(which is crocked), so i take less pain medication. I always struggled with inflammation in that tissue being irritated when i moved too much. I dont need codeine daily anymore. I now and then take keto-holiday where i dont count carbs, but it doesnt take long before i want my keto-brain back. Its my default “setting” now..living keto lifestyle with OMAD. Carby days are rare, and only for special occasions. After watching most of his videos i am now experimenting with longer fasting, and i have yet to exceed 36 hours. But so far i love how it makes me feel. So for an over-eater, like i have been since childhood..this is amazing. Hard to believe this is ME living like that. Love it.

I’m a big fan! I have a quick question…
Does autophagy stop if you consume a fat, like an avocado and or olive oil?
2nd, does it stop if you eat less than 20 grams of protein like 2 eggs with your avocado as a lunch before my normal OMADinner?
Thank you & keep up the great work!

This is why intermittent fasting is so effective for weight-loss and rejuvenation. Only 18h hours of fasting per day (8h of which are in your sleep) will kickstart autophagy and deplete your sugar levels

Hello Dr. Jason, I have been following your Intermittent Fasting 16:8 protocol that 16 hours fasting and 8 hours eating window since 2019. According to another Fasting Expert, she said, quote "Yes, at 17 hours autophagy is slowly turned on and it will peak at 72 hours"
close quote, since my fasting hours is only 16 hours, which is short of one hour, Autophagy does not kick in at all, right? May I have your comment please.

How do I thank you??? Your books enabled me { previously a ten year type-2 } to get off of all insulin and all type-2 meds within 21 days. . After each 42 hour sequential water-only fast, I ate healthy for 2 hours. Then resumed with another 42 hour fast. Pleasurable, easy, fun, free, effortless, no hunger, no discomfort. But I found electrolyte replacement powders to be mandatory.

I need to know how long do you need to fast to trigger autophagy? There are so many different lengths ? I’m about to try the 36 hour regimen to start - But heard it takes a few days to get into ketosis and so I’m wondering if really you need longer fast to get the benefits of all these health benefits besides weight loss

I understand the benefits of autophagy which are clearly explained here. What I'm not sure about are the details. If you don't need to, or really shouldn't lose weight, then how long would it be beneficial to fast for, and would it result in having to slightly increase food intake afterwards to ensure not going down to a possibly unhealthy weight?

I'm getting a CT scan in just over a week and after a year of keto hope to find my severe fatty liver is gone or at least much improved.

Hi Dr Fung, not sure where or how to ask this, but I have been hooked on you and the Int. fasting for a couple years now. I fall off an on the wagon. My question is I see some weight loss but I end up hitting a wall and no matter how much I fast (Autophagy) 24, 48,36 hour fast I can never seem to break through and I get stuck as a certain weight. Do you or anyone else know why this happens? I have run in to this issue off an off my whole like and can never seem to break through lower than 240, I am 6-2 and 54., thanks to anyone who can explain or help.

Dr. Fung what I would like to know is approximately when does autophagy kick in... i.e. would you have any autophagy happening with an 18-6 pattern or does it require omad or alternate day, etc.? I'm sure part of the answer would be a longer fast would be more effective or more reliable but I'm wondering what the rules of thumb might be on this. I am doing 18-6 everyday except for OMAD about 2 days a week and someday may work up to more, but most of what I've seen seems to suggest autophagy requires more than 24 hours to reliably say it's happening, and allow sufficient time for the process once started...

I want to read your next book on cancer and it's relation to lack of autophagy due to our excess eating. I also want to read your next book about why we overeat? Do we seek the pleasure of food because our current urban lives are not as rewarding or engaging as is working on our farm, caring for our animals, tilling our soils? Would we eat less if our jobs were not part of our brainwashing that work is rewarding emotionally when work can never love us back? If there was more sense of community and dedication to love and community-communication about connected things that are emotionally important, would we not seek food as our main reward system? We go to work after eating breakfast. We get coffee with a donut when we get to work. Someone makes a delicious cake we all share in over our lunch break - extended break. We eat lunch to avoid the growling stomach and drop off of stimulants including sugar in the afternoon. We grab a protein bar, a piece of hard candy or even go outside for a nicotine stimulant. On the way home we grab a couple of beers-wine-shot of whiskey. We get home and have an argument with our spouse and go grab a few more drinks. We then eat some cheese and crackers to help with our upset gastrointestinal feelings. We might be lucky and have some meat and potatoes for supper. We might have a few chips with our nightcap. We then fall asleep contented in our fullness. We get up over and over in the night to urinate as our bodies want to dump the sugar carbs of the day. Sounds like food is our only reward. Are we eating too much because our lives are so empty of other satisfactions?

Ty @Jason Fung can you do a video about fasting and blood thinner especially Xarelto, length of a fasting window would be good, I‘m on Xarelto and would like to know if I could do longer than 24 hour fasts. I could do them before I switched from Marcumar to Xarelto cause I could take Marcumar without food but I have to take Xarelto with food especially protein. Maybe I could do a meat broth fast but I‘m unsure. I‘m on OMAD right now but my body and I yearn for a 36-48 hour fast.

Was looking to know when does autophagy kick in? Meaning what is the minimum period of fasting length? Or the moment mTor senses no food intake it triggers? Thanks to anyone who may answer…

Do you have more information about when the different types of autophagy begin. The cellular rejuvenation starts at when mTor and glycogen are turned off, but what triggers the lipid regeneration and mitochondria regeneration?

Can someone clarify what "fasting" is? Is it going completely without food (but not calorie-free liquids) for a day or more? Or is it not eating for a certain amount of hours per day (the 18/6 or 20/4 regimens)? Or is it going without food on M-W-F? Or eating during the week and only fasting on weekends? Or should everyone be doing a full 24hr fast every 3 months for ultimate benefits?
Does one adopt the OMAD or 2MAD forever, or do you stop after you hit your goal weight? I'm just a little confused after reading about so many different ways people fast. I do the 18/6, but I'm unsure if I should do anything beyond this for Autophagy. I've achieved my goal weight, but wasn't sure if I should continue with the 18/6. I love the way I feel, but didn't know where to go with this to achieve the best health outcome that I can. I've read that obese people can do a full fast for days because they fuel off their body fat. But I'm not sure if going days without food is safe for those who are TOFI and probably carry about 50lbs or less around the middle to lose . Maybe the 18/6 or OMAD is a better choice for TOFI people? Also, should one be "fat-adapted" first before attempting any kind of fast?
I've had these questions for awhile and hoped there were clarifications on this topic.
Thanks for your help!

I have been IF for the last 7 week 16/8 removed most junk food refined carbs and sugar though I have had a single treat once or twice a week such as a small cupcake, pastry, single McDonalds egg bacon burger and the odd G&T or glass of wine when having dinner out with friends - I no longer buy buckets of ice cream jumbo sized packets of crisps and chocolate. I drink 3 litre of water walk daily and do a weekly Pilates class. my recent blood results show I’ve lowered my AIC from 8.2 to 5.9, I’ve reduced my inflammatory levels 5 times over, my kidneys are no longer leaking protein, cholesterol down, I’ve lost 22 pounds and 16 cms off my waist, my blood tests were actually just 5 weeks after this new regime - my doctor could not not believe my improved blood results - I will continue to doing OMAD and hopefully 36 hour fasts. I am also working with a sports physiologist first appointment tomorrow am. I’m 61 years of age

This video missed the imporatnt part, what is the timing for autophagy activation. Does it activate only after 24 hours as Keto does??
Surely not after 4 hours. If you do the regular fast 18hours and adopt this life style, does autophagy only kick in after you have done it for a few weeks or month.
It wouldnt kick in the first few days it you are over weight would it. I noticed with testing strips, keto did not kick in after only 18 hours of fasting.,

In my opinion fasting once a while could be beneficial but if one do it for weight loss it is not sustainable in long run. Also it might weaken our immune system if we don't feed proper nutrients to our body.

I've already finished a 40-day water fast last year but now I'm aiming for 80 days, since I have a lot of fat to use up (around 30 kg of fat). Got one question here. I couldn't find any information on this on any channel or blog, they basically all just repeat the information presented here.
Say I've been on a 24h fast and let's say autophagy has started and is humming along nicely. Say I am drinking a butter-coffee on Day two of my fast.
Will this stop autophagy cold, requiring me to wait another day of fasting for it to resume / start anew?
Or will it just set me back a few hours, and after having metabolized that butter-coffee I will just continue to renovate my cells?
Most sources speak of needing 18 to 36 hours of fasting to get into autophagy, but none explain how a small snack will set it back.
Is it just about nutrient availability in your liver and bloodstream, which can be depleted by exercise,
or is it really about signals in your body after having eaten something, anything at all, and those signals simply lasting for that long?
Long point short: I enjoy fasting for a few days, but I also enjoy my morning butter-coffee, which is about 250 kcal, a LOT. Will it wreck all the autophagy benefits? Or just set me back a few hours per day.
Fasting with that coffee in the morning still feels great, but I'd probably get rid of that too, if it actually rids me of those benefits. If it just diminishes the experience slightly, I don't care all that much. 90% of perfection is good enough for me :)

8:08 "you could go into a low protein diet but then you run the risk of not having enough protein to build what you need" this is followed by "fasting is the best way". That's very confusing. If going low on protein is bad, why if going to zero protein better? Sorry, but on this one, he's not clear.

What about dry fasting, a topic you with all due respect always avoid? Ppl can do that intermittently as well. I DF daily as long as possible and throw in a longer one each month. Supposedly it increases autophagy up to 3x more than water fasting and you certainly arent hungry during it plus it has been used to heal cancer for centuries. I feel that bc I began full fasting almost 8 yrs ago and learned to dry fast that this is the reason ppl tell me I look half my age, no sagging skin, no wrinkles at 71. Come on, get yr toes wet, pun intended, and pls do one on DFing. Thx Dr Fung!!
