This sets in motion the process of rejuvenation as our body rebuilds new proteins to replace the old ones. Autophagy is a powerful method of healing and is best activated by fasting. I don't know if you read these comments, but your videos have helped me a lot, and allowed me to lose a bunch of weight and get off insulin. I did have a significant medical issue this last week, that was related to my super low carb diet. I was going a bit crazy with sodium, adding salt to my eggs, and eating a lot of sausage. Also, a few spoons a day of salted natural peanut butter and cottage cheese, both of which are high sodium foods. It seems that all of this sodium made my BP spike and caused weird headaches.... Now that I've cut back the salt, and unfortunately started taking 40mg Lisinopril qd, things are getting under control... hopefully I can d/c or at least reduce the Lisinopril soon. Just a heads up to people who are going low carb... watch the sodium! 5 Reply Pamee Hanson Pamee Hanson 1 year ago Thanks for making this with simple explanation and examples. This one is by far the best: clear explanations in easy to understand manner. Thanks so much for posting! 11 Reply 1 reply Mark Zambelli Mark Zambelli 1 year ago Thankyou Dr. Fung... you clear things up tremendously. My question is how easy is it to inadvertantly drop out of autophagy during a fast? I regularly fast for anywhere from 3 to 4 days up to 11 or 12 days and I feel amazing, have lost loads of weight and have 'cured' my painful wrist, thumb and left knee over the last 6 months. But, I drink one strong coffee in the morning, red-bush (rooibos) tea throughout the day and sip on 2 litres of 'Lo-Salt' water (KCl and NaCl) to stay hydrated. Has the coffee and red-bush (caffeine-free btw) been pushing me out of autophagy? Perhaps someone here might shed some light on this for me... I'd be very grateful. 3 Reply MissLRKindness MissLRKindness 1 year ago (edited) Found your videos, then purchased 2 of your books. That principle is applicable in biology and can be generalized to nearly everything in this world. Going too far to one extreme or another is the root of nearly all forms of dysfunction and unhappiness. Thank you Dr. Fung for being the foremost voice in emphasizing the need for such balance in our dietary habits way BEFORE it became the popular thing for diet gurus to advocate. 4 Reply Joyce Williams Joyce Williams 1 year ago I can only say THANK YOU DOC. Recovering from Covid last 11 days so hoping autophagy will repair the damage Covid did to my upper respiratory system and digestive tract (nausea and throwing up were a part of my Covid illness). Thank you for great content and educating us on the benefits of fasting!! 5 Reply 1 reply William Berliant William Berliant 1 year ago Dr. Fung, I was having a terrible time with intermittent fasting. Every time I skip breakfast by lunch time my stomach hurts. This happened repeatedly. I figured that I just couldn't skip a meal. It doesn't work for me. Then, I discovered what the problem was. It wasn't the fasting that made my stomach hurt, it was the coffee. Even though I was skipping breakfast, I was still having a cup of coffee with heavy cream and butter. That helped me be full until lunch. But then my stomach would really hurt. I quit the coffee, now, no problem. I have no problem drinking water. Have you ever heard about coffee being an irritant when fasting? 3 Reply Carlos Portillo Carlos Portillo 1 year ago Thanks for the explanation Doc! It would be great if you could follow this video up with a technique video -- i.e. HOW to fast to achieve different kinds of autophagy for different goals. Looking forward to the next video. 8 Reply kabes7 kabes7 1 year ago Such an incredible bonus to fasting for weight loss. Would've liked to hear more specifics like how many hours you need to fast to get a good amount of autophagy. The app I use to track my fasting (fastic) says after 16 hours it begins, so I am I right to assume my normal 23:1 regimen is getting me autophagy every day? Lately I've been considering throwing in one or two 48-hour fasts per week since I am not hungry anymore, even at my mealtime. I enjoy eating a lot, but I don't have the physiological need after a 24 hr fast, it's all just for pleasure at this point. So why not try some 48 hour ones? Think I will skip my dinner tonight and see how it goes. 6 Reply 2 replies CHILD OF THE MIGHTY CHILD OF THE MIGHTY 1 year ago I appreciate you doctor. Doing my 36 hr fast starting now. Next time I'm going to go for a 72 hour fast. 16 Reply Tyra Rice Tyra Rice 1 year ago I love the way you broke that down. I'm 52 years old, 5 foot 1 and need to lose about 80 pounds. I started intermittent fasting about a month ago for weight loss. I haven't lost any weight yet but my fingernails are back to being hard and sturdy after constantly chipping and breaking for the last 4 years and my energy level has gone up. I was a junk food junky for years and thought i would feel like I was dieing from starvation doing the 16:8 fasting but that didn"t happen. 7 Reply 2 replies Vamsi Harati Vamsi Harati 1 year ago Thanks Doc for sharing such great content .. Really motivating and insightful.. 👍 1 Reply Cameron Kerr Cameron Kerr 1 year ago Really appreciated how mTOR and Insulin relate to protein and carbs respectively. When I was doing alternate day fasting I noticed that weight would steadily and slowly decline, then pause for a few days… while waistline seemed to shrink (but weight stayed the same). This cycle would repeat a number of time as I lost about 25kgs. So I’m wondering if the body has some mode whether it is burning autophagic debris or it is burning fat. Ideas? 3 Reply 1 reply J. Worst years of my life where i ended up needing b12 and iron injections and doc considered me borderline malnourished. Yes i lost the weight, but i was not functioning. Sleeping 10 h a night plus nap during the day. I got praise for losing weight, but when i tried to tell them i didnt feel better, in-fact i felt worse, i was looked at like I was stupid. Losing weight is “good for you”, right? My son told me i had slurred speech and at times i talked in slow motion. I did not notice this myself really. And now we are talking about my maintenance period AFTER i lost weight. I could after a year maintaining that new weight, STILL not eat more than 1300-1400 calories a day, without GAINING weight. I got fed up and started eating 1600-1800 a day, and felt better. But weight slowly came back even tho i still kept an eye on calories. I was convinced my body was trying to get back to my highest weight and sucked up ever calorie i ate. Watching Dr, Fungs videos put words and scientific explanations to what i lived through. 3 years ago when i started keto to try lose weight again, i felt like a new person. OMAD came naturally due to less hunger, and i loved my “keto brain” as i called it when talking about it with others. I felt creative again for first time in years. I had less pain in the surrounding tissue of my hip joint(which is crocked), so i take less pain medication. I always struggled with inflammation in that tissue being irritated when i moved too much. I dont need codeine daily anymore. I now and then take keto-holiday where i dont count carbs, but it doesnt take long before i want my keto-brain back. Its my default “setting” now..living keto lifestyle with OMAD. Carby days are rare, and only for special occasions. After watching most of his videos i am now experimenting with longer fasting, and i have yet to exceed 36 hours. But so far i love how it makes me feel. So for an over-eater, like i have been since childhood..this is amazing. Hard to believe this is ME living like that. Love it. 5 Reply 1 reply Ochiai Roma Ochiai Roma 1 year ago I lost almost 5 kg for OMAD except Saturday and Sunday for almost two months. I also want to read your next book about why we overeat? Do we seek the pleasure of food because our current urban lives are not as rewarding or engaging as is working on our farm, caring for our animals, tilling our soils? Would we eat less if our jobs were not part of our brainwashing that work is rewarding emotionally when work can never love us back? If there was more sense of community and dedication to love and community-communication about connected things that are emotionally important, would we not seek food as our main reward system? We go to work after eating breakfast. We get coffee with a donut when we get to work. Someone makes a delicious cake we all share in over our lunch break - extended break. We eat lunch to avoid the growling stomach and drop off of stimulants including sugar in the afternoon. We grab a protein bar, a piece of hard candy or even go outside for a nicotine stimulant. On the way home we grab a couple of beers-wine-shot of whiskey. We get home and have an argument with our spouse and go grab a few more drinks. We then eat some cheese and crackers to help with our upset gastrointestinal feelings. We might be lucky and have some meat and potatoes for supper. We might have a few chips with our nightcap. We then fall asleep contented in our fullness. We get up over and over in the night to urinate as our bodies want to dump the sugar carbs of the day. Sounds like food is our only reward. Are we eating too much because our lives are so empty of other satisfactions? 4 Reply 1 reply Raj Raj 1 month ago Does anyone know if Biosteel knocks you out of autophagy??? Or is it going without food on M-W-F? Or eating during the week and only fasting on weekends? Or should everyone be doing a full 24hr fast every 3 months for ultimate benefits? Does one adopt the OMAD or 2MAD forever, or do you stop after you hit your goal weight? I'm just a little confused after reading about so many different ways people fast. I noticed with testing strips, keto did not kick in after only 18 hours of fasting., 1 Reply REETA RANI REETA RANI 1 year ago Thanks for great information,Is it useful in meniscus tear Reply yoko yoko 1 year ago (edited) I'm going to start tomorrow,so badly want to quit my 2 year cigarette addiction!!!!! 3 Reply 4 replies Warren Hammer Warren Hammer 3 months ago What about eating only fat (like butter), since you are getting no carbs and no protein, you wouldn't be getting insulin and mTor Reply Ranjit Khangembam Ranjit Khangembam 1 year ago In my opinion fasting once a while could be beneficial but if one do it for weight loss it is not sustainable in long run. I've already finished a 40-day water fast last year but now I'm aiming for 80 days, since I have a lot of fat to use up (around 30 kg of fat). I couldn't find any information on this on any channel or blog, they basically all just repeat the information presented here. Say I've been on a 24h fast and let's say autophagy has started and is humming along nicely. Say I am drinking a butter-coffee on Day two of my fast. Will this stop autophagy cold, requiring me to wait another day of fasting for it to resume / start anew? Or will it just set me back a few hours, and after having metabolized that butter-coffee I will just continue to renovate my cells? Most sources speak of needing 18 to 36 hours of fasting to get into autophagy, but none explain how a small snack will set it back. Is it just about nutrient availability in your liver and bloodstream, which can be depleted by exercise, or is it really about signals in your body after having eaten something, anything at all, and those signals simply lasting for that long? Long point short: I enjoy fasting for a few days, but I also enjoy my morning butter-coffee, which is about 250 kcal, a LOT. Will it wreck all the autophagy benefits? Or just set me back a few hours per day. Fasting with that coffee in the morning still feels great, but I'd probably get rid of that too, if it actually rids me of those benefits. If it just diminishes the experience slightly, I don't care all that much. 90% of perfection is good enough for me :) Reply Monique Page Monique Page 1 year ago Dr. Fung, what's your opinion of the "GOLO" insulin resistant supplement? Supposedly it increases autophagy up to 3x more than water fasting and you certainly arent hungry during it plus it has been used to heal cancer for centuries. I feel that bc I began full fasting almost 8 yrs ago and learned to dry fast that this is the reason ppl tell me I look half my age, no sagging skin, no wrinkles at 71.
