scientific spirit and every word and action left a profound and Lasting 34:57 Impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him next we will hear from the flb 35:04 representatives who are close friend of Professor Lee first we have a video message from Frank wiek the 2004 Nobel 35:13 LED in physics and the founding director of The sundali Institute who is 35:18 currently serving as a chef scientist he has recorded this message to express his 35:23 profound condolence for Professor Lee my friend and inspiration TD 35:30 Lee I first met TD at Columbia 35:35 University in 1973 where I gave one of my very first 35:42 seminars at that time I was still a graduate student and of course TD Lee 35:48 was already a very eminent and famous physicist having legendary physicist 35:55 having uh discovered for the violation of parody and the weak interactions among many other Stellar achievements 36:04 that are in textbooks and that I was aware of and having won the Nobel Prize 36:10 so he was on a vastly different level yet when I uh met him he was very open 36:18 and unassuming and he made me feel respected 36:23 like a colleague rather than a lowly student 36:29 besides these personal uh contacts with TD I had contacts with him kind of at 36:36 one remove at a higher level that I found quite inspiring and 36:42 awesome he was very influential in keeping Brook 36:49 Haven National Laboratory a vital place where his uh 36:56 dream his vision of physics as an experimental and theoretical Enterprise 37:01 was embodied uh he specifically uh was very 37:07 influential I think probably decisively influential in getting the so-called riken program 37:14 of largescale computing going there and supportive posts who did that activity 37:21 that was vital to the uh predictive power an experimental 37:28 verification of qcd at low energies and he also 37:35 inspired uh the heavy ion Collision uh work at at at Brook Haven 37:42 the relativistic heavy ion collider I don't think would would have happened 37:47 without his influence both as a scientific inspiration and as a political force uh 37:56 and that of course has been an extremely fruitful and productive Enterprise that 38:02 uh we all can be proud of I mentioned before his statesmanlike 38:09 achievements at at Brook Haven National Laboratory in forming institutions of 38:15 course in China he also was a great institution Builder the cpia program was 38:22 the source of life in uh Chinese 38:28 science Chinese physics connecting it with the International Community when 38:34 things were very difficult and has been very fruitful in uh forming a 38:41 generation of accomplished uh uh Chinese students allowing them to study abroad 38:47 and come back and and uh contribute to physics in a way that would have been 38:54 otherwise uh impossible and changed their lives and has changed the physics 39:00 Community for the better and last but not least uh in 39:07 recent years uh TD Lee was of course a big Catalyst in getting the TD Lee 39:15 Institute started uh in Shanghai uh in conjunction with uh 39:23 sjtu and it's now a thriving institution 39:29 with a great future before it and one more of TD Le's 39:38 legacies so it's been a life fully lived an inspiring story that starts 39:46 with difficult times in Wartime in China uh study assiduous study uh that enabled 39:56 him to go to uh study with fery at 40:02 Chicago and have early spectacular 40:08 success at an early age uh made great contributions to 40:14 science and then uh went on to be a great Statesman of science for science 40:22 uh forming a thriving family and community at Colombia 40:27 uh building things at uh Brook Haven kaspia and 40:34 TDL those fortunate enough to know him personally will remember him not only as 40:42 a great scientist but as a warm and wise human being so again a life well-lived 40:51 and uh it's uh bittersweet 40:57 that uh like all human lives it comes to an end but I think we can celebrate a 41:06 life that was fulfilled fruitful and has left a remarkable 41:17 Legacy thank you Frank now let's welcome former president 41:24 of Shanghai University academ Lin Jing 41:47 the academic 47:40 Committee of the China Center for Advance science technology and professor of sunali Institute to read on his 47:47 behalf please welcome researcher w tril 48:01 Mr H is aluminous of Shanghai Delon University from 1945 to 1947 he studied 48:10 chemistry at SG before shifting his Focus to physics and later contributing 48:16 to the development of atonic bomb here is Mr H 48:23 eulogy we have received the sad news Professor Lee passed away in San 48:28 Francisco he would have turned 98 this November were deeply saddened by this 48:34 news Professor sunal Lee and I are contemporaries in 48:40 physics and we are only N9 months 48:45 apart that's why we have so much in common for 48:50 instance he once told me that he once recounted his time at the national South 48:56 Western Association University where he participated in the December 1st 49:01 movement in quing on December 1st 1945 during the chaos where the agent 49:08 attempted to address four Martyrs he was right there in the thick of it narrowly 49:14 missing a bullet that whisted past his head he humorously notes that if he had 49:21 been a bit taller history might have recorded five martas instead of four 49:29 later an array of senior physicist and chemists along with young student went 49:36 to the US to learn automatic automatic bom making among this selected by 49:45 Professor andang however due to the strict us restriction that barred out the nation 49:51 from mastering atomic bomb technology Professor Lee was forced to shift his 49:56 Focus to political science this change mirrored our own academic experiences 50:03 providing a common ground and common topic between us despite our shared 50:10 experiences Professor leoen stressed discreption he humbly claimed that his 50:15 contribution to partical physics did not significantly Advance China's cause Ness 50:23 it's important to recognize that his work greatly Advanced the scientific progress in 50:29 China on March 18th 1978 under the leadership of Vice Premier d 50:38 xaing a pivotal National Science conference took place in Beijing at this 50:45 conference a respect of group a respected group of physics advocate for 50:51 creation of a coste effective sadical physics Research Institute to boost 50:56 scientific advancement in China this proposal quickly won Vice Premier talin's endorsement leading to the 51:04 building of the Institute with Professor pan W as the Director and 51:11 professor as the deputy director setting up this institute initially felt 51:17 overwhelming overwhelming for me I hardly know where to begin however 51:22 during a timely visit to China I consulted professor sundali for his 51:30 advice he suggested that you can go to an 51:38 exploratory trip to the US to observe various thetical physics Research 51:44 Unit and to study their experience and best 51:51 practices and then Professor Lee quickly mapped out a root 51:56 and all and laid out all the budget and instantly offered 52:02 organizational support for 52:07 me following his guidance we formed a delegation including 52:18 Professor this team went down to a three month tour across the US to study how us 52:25 done research in this field view this trip was very eyde opening and 52:32 we have met many peers in this field and Professor Lee also recommended us to the 52:39 ston broke at the State University of New York to study with Professor chaining Yang then during our trip we 52:48 also reconnected with Professor marar who we had first encountered at the nice 52:55 International highend physic conference in Q in 53:01 1959 I was curious about the driver of the America sustained growth I inquiry 53:06 about key contributors Marsh revealed that about 17th of Americans are 53:13 committed to the nation's Prosperity that's the true backbone of America 53:20 later we shared Insight with Professor Lee at Columbia University I told him 53:26 what Professor Marsha told us and Professor Le validated 53:33 that Mr marach was right and he also validated this 17s 53:41 indeed support America's success Professor Lee later recommended several impactful initiatives to Chinese 53:48 government including a postto system a a special program for gifted young student 53:54 and also the Casp program to send Chinese student 54:03 abroad I always believed that Professor Lee is a true lover to his country and 54:11 he has done concrete actions to support his ideal and his 54:19 love for his country Professor Lee is a scientific 54:40 luminary thank you Mr W now let's 54:46 truly 1:23:44 inspired as a young girl who had studied Guin from a young age and cherish the 1:23:49 love for music and picture a conversation with him ready to listen to his wisdom and guidance for the Next 1:23:57 Generation Professor Lee Moto true understanding comes from studying the problem not just the answer took root in 1:24:05 my heart I aspire to emulate his courage in Venture into the Uncharted Territory 1:24:11 of human 1:24:17 knowledge one year later driven by the wish to follow his footstep I was 1:24:24 admitted to Shanghai Jon University as an S I have always felt a deep sense of 1:24:32 responsibility I applied for Jin Jun projects and take the first take my 1:24:38 first step in my research by exploring the functional material for environmental pollution control and 1:24:45 resource utilization I also joined the University's Chinese music 1:24:51 Club inspired by Professor Lee f try to blend science and art in practice 1:24:57 transforming the r ryms of nature into musical notes expressing my reflection 1:25:04 on the word and life and drawing inspiration for both mcro and micro realm I have gradually felt the 1:25:11 creativity and vitality bought by this Fusion of Science and Arts which continue to benefit me deeply in 2021 I 1:25:19 was honored with the title of jun Jun scholar as a female researcher I felt 1:25:25 immersively proud and privileged the Jin Jun academic platform has provided me 1:25:32 with Comprehensive support and guidance in nurturing science and through this 1:25:38 Pro platform I have had the privilege of meeting a group of passionate Travelers 1:25:44 on the path of research under the guidance of Professor Le we seek 1:25:49 breakthrough and collaboration in the process of challenging ourself on behalf 1:25:54 of all J Jun scholar from ping LEL 1:26:01 University and Shanghai Delon University I would like to express my 1:26:06 sincerest gratitude and highest respect to professor sundali and Miss ching and 1:26:13 their family nowadays I am a member of Jan 1:26:19 honor program the place I frequently most beside the lab is the Sali 1:26:25 Library the seed of scholarly Pursuit and diligent study I once planted have 1:26:31 now taken firm rot Professor Lee's commitment to scholarship has constantly 1:26:38 guided me urging me to undertake more challenging scientific trainings 1:26:44 and cultivate an increasingly meticulous mindset as China embarks onquest to 1:26:51 achieve its due carbon goals I'm determined to dedicate my research to 1:26:56 serving the nation I decided to direct my effort into interdisciplinary work 1:27:02 tackling environmental and energy challenges contributing toward the realization of an eco-friendly China 1:27:10 Professor Lee's towering achievement and commitment will forever Inspire us we 1:27:15 shall honor his memory by committing ourself fully to the pursuit of 1:27:21 knowledge and the continued progress of Nation Nation Guided by his persistence 1:27:27 we will strive for new scientific breakthroughs nurture the exceptional Talent of the future and dedicate our 1:27:36 effort toward the realization of great Rejuvenation of Chinese 1:27:43 Nation on behalf of all Shanghai Jon University student and junun Scholars 1:27:49 Professor Lee will leave Z forever 1:28:01 thank you the vast Sky Mourns the pillar of 1:28:07 our times and the wains and trees weep in shared sorrow across the four seas 1:28:14 our hearts are united and our thought linger for eternity at this time our 1:28:20 heart are closely connected with the professor Le's family on behalf of all 1:28:25 present at today's memorial service I extend our deepest condolence and care 1:28:31 to Professor Lee's family now let's invite Professor James 1:28:41 Lee Professor Lee's eldest son and Professor Angel Lee his eldest grandson 1:28:46 to deliver their acknowledgement now please first welcome Professor Angelie to the stage 1:29:07 everyone for attending today our family has been moved by all the messages we have received remembering our 1:29:15 grandfather and stories about how his life has impacted others I'll briefly share a few words 1:29:22 from my sister Andrea and myself When We Were Young we remember 1:29:29 how y was quite busy with work y had an immense passion for 1:29:34 physics which occupied most of his time when he was at home he would often spend 1:29:40 endless hours in his study with a paper pad and pencil handwriting pages and 1:29:46 notebooks full of physics 1:29:53 calculations Yaya's second passion was working on educational initiatives to 1:29:58 Foster the next generation of Scholars and scientific collaborations between 1:30:04 different countries he was especially proud of the 1:30:09 new generations of Scholars in China and believe that if China did well that by 1:30:15 extension the world would also do well given China's integral role in global 1:30:22 development in his spare time y would find enjoyment in his third passion 1:30:28 which was sketching and artwork y had a profound appreciation 1:30:35 for nature and Beauty which he felt inspired his creativity in 1:30:42 physics he would often sketch Landscapes from different sites he visited to give 1:30:47 to r n after our grandmother passed away he would draw pictures for the rest of the 1:30:53 family as y got older he began to travel less 1:30:59 and spent more quiet time at home sketching this was especially true in 1:31:05 his retirement y had a very specific plan 1:31:10 about how he would retire which he executed on his own 1:31:16 terms in his retirement Yaya spent time working on new physics equations reading 1:31:23 over notebooks of previous calculations that he had solved in the past and going 1:31:28 through problem sets that he had written for his graduate 1:31:34 students mostly however Yaya spent increasing time documenting the world 1:31:39 around him through sketching and art after Yaya retired he was never 1:31:47 without a small Sketchbook in his pocket and a few colored pens to capture a 1:31:52 budding tree the flapping Birds the sunlight reflected in the 1:31:59 water and the shade of blue sky compared with a suddenly different blue hue of the adjacent 1:32:09 ocean he remarked how sketching was his way of creating a visual diary observing and capturing fleeting 1:32:16 everyday moments which would otherwise be lost to 1:32:22 impermanence when sketching a fruit bowl at home he would observe the character of the objects as if they could be 1:32:28 people he'd remark how the placement of a pair in relation to an Apple appeared 1:32:35 as if the two were nodding towards each other engaged in the 1:32:42 conversation at home we were surrounded by Chinese paintings many of them from his 1:32:52 acquaintances he was would often look up at a nearby Chinese painting and Muse upon the strength of the brush Strokes 1:32:59 the contrast of the Black Ink with the white negative space and the elements of 1:33:05 the composition that contributed to the core character of the 1:33:11 artwork he had a profound interest in the Poetry that accompanied these paintings he would take the time to 1:33:18 carefully explain what the characters represented in relation to the image and admired the 1:33:25 beauty and creativity of the Chinese 1:33:30 language this this was reflected in the care and consideration that he put into his own 1:33:39 calligraphy he instilled in us a deep appreciation and gratitude for art nature and 1:33:46 Beauty he was also very optimistic for the 1:33:52 future a phrase he would often repeat in his retired years in San Francisco was 1:33:58 today is a beautiful day as was yesterday as will be 1:34:06 tomorrow our grandfather was kind loving and a constant role model for his joyful 1:34:11 creative practice taking in the beauty of each day through his ritual of 1:34:17 observation being present and sketching 1:34:23 he often encouraged us to practice calligraphy read Chinese poems and write 1:34:29 Chinese characters in his penmanship for us to trace on top 1:34:35 of in addition to pursuing academic scholarship one way our family will 1:34:41 remember Y is through my sister's art and not for the purpose of a final 1:34:47 result but to enjoy the daily Pursuit and discipline of creativity which yaa 1:34:53 enjoyed so much thank 1:35:06 you thank you Angelie now let's welcome Professor James Lee 1:35:38 thank you so much for your condolences 1:35:44 appreciation and expression of support since we announced the 4th 1:35:52 August the news of that bad passing the personal message and public 1:35:57 postings have been 1:36:03 [Music] overwhelming this is our memorial 1:36:09 service for our father and on behalf of our entire 1:36:15 family we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for this Memorial 1:36:27 compared to us you knows our dad better than us 1:36:34 publicly dad was a physic and educator and a scientific 1:36:40 leader but my brother and stepen and I knew him meaning as a loving father 1:36:51 [Music] as his son our died was our BW work of 1:36:59 strengths providing us with overwhelming vitality and 1:37:05 wisdom we could dwell for pages of his role in our 1:37:10 life but what I appreciate most though are 1:37:16 the values and importance he taught us of intellectual pursuit of concent 1:37:23 concentration of humility of 1:37:29 Duty of national pride of personal 1:37:35 Integrity of appreciation of Fine Arts of the importance of family and 1:37:43 friendship um and most importantly of making a 1:37:50 difference rather than making money 1:38:01 father always encouraged us to learn from his close friend when I when Stefan was little 1:38:09 father shared a puzzle I wrote with the mathematician Dr Isis 1:38:14 Kos and when at around the same age I had a school 1:38:20 assignment to interview a senior person father arranged him to 1:38:26 interview a close friend Dr 1:38:33 W both experiences were important for my brother Dr Wood told him 1:38:43 that in high school I wanted to be a 1:38:49 writer to study humanities 1:38:57 so he she told his father about this 1:39:05 idea his father had asked to read her writings after reading her essays her 1:39:11 father told Dr Woo well she was a good writer that if she explored the science 1:39:19 she would have something more significant to write about Doctor Who 1:39:24 told my brother that that is how I started my career in 1:39:32 science Our Father cared deeply about us and about his friend he told us when he and Chen yang 1:39:42 received the word of Nobel Prize for parity nonconservation he wrote to the Nobel 1:39:48 committee that believe that Dr Woo have improved their ideas experimentally 1:39:54 should be included in the prize later he sought to Ally their 1:40:01 decision by nominating Dr Wu twice for her work on beta Decay first in physics 1:40:08 in 1971 and then in chemistry in 1:40:19 1972 And when this nomination fell through 1:40:24 [Music] father quite a bit later had the idea to 1:40:31 co- nominate Dr wood together with a physicist whom he was confident with 1:40:42 Wayne indeed the Nobel Prize was awarded for this work that the 1:40:50 year but father was said to learn that dror wo was not included in the 1:40:56 [Music] 1:41:02 award so my father again tried to persuade them to include Dr 1:41:10 Woo however today as Andrea and angrew have shared 1:41:16 with you that last few years Stefan and I would prefer 1:41:24 to conclude this short Bittersweet appreciation for our father with 1:41:30 something about Dad's vitality and salt during the last few 1:41:37 months almost up to the end he could still work short distances Elbert with 1:41:50 assistance even when he became back that ridden he was still able to talk 1:41:58 think and communicate he repeatedly said how much 1:42:05 he loved us during the last few days he will always talk about his wish 1:42:13 to reunite with my family who died in 1:42:22 996 hopefully in some way now he had achieved his 1:42:28 [Music] wish during his last few 1:42:33 days he said I will always be a part of you you all will always be a part of 1:42:42 me he was surrounded by his families but I think this word is not 1:42:49 only for us but also for his dear friend for all of you his colleagues as 1:42:58 his student and the country he 1:43:08 loves I'm honored to be part of [Music] 1:43:15 him and I just like you his friend his colleagues and his 1:43:22 students will be a part of him thank 1:43:43 you thank you Professor James Lee lastly I would like to 1:43:49 share two personal reflections since August the 1:43:56 4th during this time I've read many articles reflecting on Professor Lee 1:44:04 which has given me a more comprehensive understanding of his scientific achievements I deeply feel that despite 1:44:12 the privilege of having a profound relationship with TD and being regarded by him as a close friend across 1:44:18 Generations my knowledge of his scientific accomplishment is still insufficient as see on the screen 1:44:26 Professor s Le published 300 and 21 academic papers 1:44:34 over his 62e academic career from 1949 to 2010 1:44:40 making pioneering and Milestone contributions in many fields including Quantum fail Theory fundamental particle 1:44:47 theory Nuclear Physics statistic mechanics fluid mechanics and astrop 1:44:53 physics among these achievements apart from the Nobel prize winning 1:45:01 achievement he had made fundamental contributions to the other five Nobel 1:45:06 prize winning acadamic 1:45:15 achievements which also include the previous speech from aamish eang that 1:45:21 the Chinese internet its establishment is also thank to the 1:45:29 contribution of Professor s since August the 4th I also noticed that the level of 1:45:36 public attention to TD's passing even surpris is that of the Olympics 1:45:41 particularly for the younger generation who might have only known TD made significant scientific contributions as 1:45:48 was one of the first Chinese Nobel L there was little else they knew about 1:45:54 him feeling he was quite distant however since TD's passing the 1:46:00 overwhelming expressions of remembrance and reports about him have given them the opportunity to understand his 1:46:06 contributions to the development of China's science and talent cultivation they' have come to realize 1:46:12 how close and familiar TD had is and how his fcy is from his first visit to China 1:46:21 in 1972 to his his last visit in 2010 TD returned to China 49 times over 38 years 1:46:30 with States ranging from one week to 14 weeks covering all 27 provincial level 1:46:38 administrative regions of the country as sh on the big screen TD made numerous 1:46:43 fundamental contributions to the development of China's science and talent cultivation 1:46:53 I will say that Professor TD Lee really changed the Destinies of many of 1:47:00 us the contributions TD made to science into our country are largely complete 1:47:05 and have become part of History however the 1:47:10 expectation for TD's work to contribute fundamentally to The salii Institute and 1:47:17 to become a worldclass research institution is still ongoing and 1:47:22 requires our continued and Collective 1:47:28 effort today due the insufficient seating at 1:47:33 the memorial service many staff and students of TD have had to stand on the 1:47:39 slopes to attend the service now I would like to represent them to express their 1:47:47 sentiments in one sentence Professor TD Lee rest in peace 1:47:54 finally we sincerely thank the nearly over thousand guests in the main 1:48:02 venue and sat life 1:48:07 venues and over 2.42 million online viewers who join us 1:48:14 for today's memorial service for Professor Sali Professor Sali May rest 1:48:19 Eternal peace ladies and gentlemen the memorial service for Professor Sali has 1:48:25 ended please
