Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos gave the Baccalaureate address to Princeton University's Class of 2010. Bezos graduated from Princeton in 1986 with a degree in computer science and electrical engineering. He was introduced by Princeton University President Shirley M. Tilghman.
Bezos spoke to the Class of 2010 about the difference between choices and gifts. Cleverness, Bezos pointed out, is a gift, while being kind to others is a choice. One's character, he suggested, is reflected not in the gifts one is endowed with at birth but rather by the choices one makes over the course of a lifetime. Full transcript here:

it is hard to imagine life without
0:08
amazon.com even for someone of my

Advanced

age after all where else can a few
0:16
clicks of a mouse take you from the
0:19
latest novel by Tony Morrison to an 18th
0:23
century edition of The Works of John
0:26
Lock having stopped in power tools and
0:30
and women's shoes along the
0:32
way yet the founder and chief executive
0:36
officer of the world's largest etailer
0:39
whose net sales surpassed
0:42
$24.5 billion in
0:45
2009 is only 46 years old and amazon.com
0:50
has only existed since
0:54
1995 making it even younger than the
0:57
class of 2010
1:00
the moral of this story is that the
1:03
right idea in the right hands at the
1:06
right time can change the way we lead
1:09
Our
1:10
Lives the idea in this case was
1:14
harnessing the power of the nent
1:16
internet to create a virtual bookstore
1:19
of Limitless
1:21
proportions the hands were those of our
1:24
speaker Jeff Bezos a self-described
1:28
nerdy commuter
1:30
computer science and electrical
1:32
engineering major who graduated from
1:35
Princeton with highest honors in
1:39
1986 and the time was
1:42
1994 when he and his wife McKenzie
1:46
Tuttle Bezos of the class of
1:49
1992 exchanged the security of Wall
1:52
Street where they worked at De sha
1:55
company for the uncertain prospects of a
1:59
com
2:00
startup but then as Jeff points out
2:04
failure is an essential component of
2:06
innovation and
2:08
invention if you know it's going to work
2:11
it's not an
2:12
experiment and amazon.com was nothing if
2:16
not a grand
2:18
experiment working on improvised tables
2:21
in the garage of his Seattle home and
2:24
using his parents' savings as startup
2:26
Capital Jeff defied the forces that
2:30
cause most young companies to fail
2:33
partly he admits through sheer Good
2:36
Fortune but also because of his
2:38
unwavering
2:40
determination to create the world's most
2:43
customer Centric
2:45
company and as he notes in his company's
2:48
latest annual report of the
2:51
452 goals that amazon.com has said for
2:55
itself this year 360 of them will will
3:00
directly affect the customer
3:02
experience while the word revenue is
3:05
used on only eight
3:08
occasions I do not advise you to start
3:11
off with 452 goals this year by the
3:16
way but this is just one of the keys to
3:19
Jeff's success another lies in his
3:22
exceptional ability to marry Commerce
3:25
and technology in creative ways in his
3:28
sheer invent iveness and willingness to
3:31
take the risks inherent in this
3:34
process indeed the history of amazon.com
3:38
is one of Daring
3:39
leaps one such leap involveed creating
3:42
the capacity to search inside the books
3:45
sold by his company not by designing a
3:48
modest pilot project but by committing
3:52
the resources to make it possible to
3:55
scour the text of more than
3:57
120,000 volumes when this feature
4:00
debuted in
4:03
2003 other Innovations have included
4:05
oneclick shopping online product reviews
4:09
by customers and of course the Kindle
4:12
reading device which we test drove in
4:15
three courses this
4:17
fall mirroring the rapid growth of
4:19
Amazon itself the number of books
4:22
available through the US Kindle Store
4:24
topped 460,000
4:26
in
4:28
2009 just 2 years after its
4:31
launch and there's no turning
4:34
back our vision is every book every
4:39
printed in any language all available in
4:42
less than 60 seconds Jeff has stated an
4:46
audacious proposition to be sure but as
4:49
Al Albert Einstein once observed if at
4:52
first the idea is not absurd then there
4:55
is no hope for
4:57
it perhaps the American Amer Academy of
5:00
achievements summarized our speaker's
5:02
impact best when it noted having already
5:07
revolutionize the way the world buys
5:09
books Jeff Bezos is now transforming the
5:13
way we read them as
5:15
well I like to think that Princeton
5:17
helped to lay the groundwork for this
5:20
revolution dreamer and doer entrepreneur
5:25
and
5:26
engineer refreshingly unassuming even in
5:29
the face of unimaginable success Jeff
5:33
has done his Alma moer proud it is a
5:36
true honor and pleasure to welcoming him
5:39
back to Old Nassau today
6:27
as a kid
6:30
I spent my Summers with my
6:32
grandparents on The Ranch in
6:35
Texas I helped fix
6:37
windmills vaccinate cattle and do other
6:43
chores we also watched soap operas every
6:46
afternoon especially Days of Our
6:50
Lives my grandparents belonged to a
6:53
caravan club a group of Airstream
6:57
trailer owners who travel together
7:00
around the US and
7:02
Canada and every few
7:04
Summers we' join the
7:07
Caravan we'd hitch up the Airstream to
7:10
my grandfather's
7:12
car and off we'd
7:15
go in align with 300 other Airstream
7:21
adventurers I loved and worshiped my
7:25
grandparents and I really looked forward
7:27
to these trips
7:30
on one particular trip I was about 10
7:34
years
7:34
old I was rolling
7:37
around in the big bench seat in the back
7:41
of the
7:42
car my grandfather was
7:44
driving and my grandmother had the
7:48
passenger
7:49
seat she
7:51
smoked throughout these
7:53
trips and I hated the smell
8:03
at that age i' take any excuse to make
8:07
estimates and do minor arithmetic I'd
8:10
calculate our gas mileage figure out
8:13
useless statistics on things like
8:15
grocery
8:16
spending I've been hearing an ad
8:19
campaign about
8:21
smoking I can't remember the details but
8:24
basically the ad said every puff of a
8:27
cigarette takes some number number of
8:29
minutes off of your life I think it
8:32
might have been two minutes per
8:34
puff at any rate I decided to do the
8:37
math for my
8:39
grandmother I estimated the number of
8:41
cigarettes per day estimated the number
8:44
of Puffs per cigarette and so on when I
8:47
was satisfied that I'd come up with a
8:49
reasonable number I poked my head into
8:52
the front of the car tapped my
8:54
grandmother on the shoulder and proudly
8:58
proclaimed at two minutes per
9:00
puff you've taken nine years off of your
9:07
life I have a very vivid memory of what
9:10
happened
9:12
next and it was not what I had
9:16
expected I expected to be applauded for
9:19
my
9:19
cleverness and my arithmetic
9:24
skills Jeff you're so smart
9:29
you had to have made some tricky
9:31
estimates figure out the number of
9:33
minutes in a year and do some
9:38
division that's not what
9:41
happened
9:42
instead my grandmother bursts into
9:49
tears I sat in the back seat didn't know
9:53
what to do while my grandmother was
9:55
crying my grandfather who'd been driving
9:59
in violence pulled over onto the
10:01
shoulder of the highway he got out of
10:04
the car and came around and opened my
10:06
door waited for me to follow was I in
10:10
trouble my grandfather was a highly
10:13
intelligent quiet man he had never said
10:17
a harsh word to me maybe this was to be
10:19
the first time or maybe he would ask
10:22
that I get back in the car and apologize
10:25
to my grandmother I had no experience in
10:28
this realm with my grandparents and no
10:31
way to gauge what the consequences might
10:35
be we stopped beside the trailer my
10:39
grandfather looked at me and after a bit
10:43
of Silence he gently and calmly said
10:49
Jeff one day you'll
10:53
understand that it's harder to be kind
10:56
than clever
11:02
what I want to talk to you about today
11:05
is the difference between gifts and
11:08
choices cleverness is a gift kindness is
11:13
a choice gifts are easy they're given
11:17
after
11:18
all choices can be hard you can seduce
11:22
yourself with your gifts if you're not
11:24
careful and if you do it'll probably be
11:27
to the detriment of your choices
11:30
this is a group with many
11:32
gifts I'm sure one of your gifts is the
11:35
gift of a smart and capable
11:37
brain I'm confident that's the case
11:40
because admission is competitive and if
11:43
there weren't some signs that you're
11:44
clever the dean of admissions wouldn't
11:46
have let you
11:49
in your smarts will come in handy
11:52
because you will travel in a Land of
11:55
marveles we humans plotting as we are
11:59
we'll astonish ourselves we'll invent
12:02
ways to generate clean energy and a lot
12:04
of it Adam by adom we'll assemble small
12:09
machines that can inter cell walls and
12:11
make
12:12
repairs this month comes the
12:15
extraordinary but inevitable news that
12:17
we've synthesized life in the coming
12:20
years we'll not only synthesize it but
12:23
engineer it to
12:25
specifications I believe you'll even see
12:27
us understand the human brain
12:30
Jules Vern Mark Twain Galileo Newton all
12:35
the Curious from the ages would have
12:38
wanted to be alive most of all right
12:42
now as a civilization we will have so
12:45
many gifts just as you as individuals
12:48
have so many individual gifts as you sit
12:51
before
12:52
me how will you use these gifts and will
12:55
you take pride in your gifts or pride in
12:58
your choices
13:00
I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years
13:04
ago I came across the fact that web
13:06
usage was growing at 2300 per per year I
13:10
had never seen or heard of anything that
13:13
grew that
13:15
fast the idea of building an online
13:17
bookstore with millions of titles
13:20
something that simply couldn't exist in
13:22
the physical world was very exciting to
13:25
me I just turned 30 years old and I'd
13:28
been married married for a year I told
13:31
my wife McKenzie that I wanted to quit
13:33
my job and go do this crazy thing that
13:37
probably wouldn't work since most
13:39
startups don't and I wasn't sure what
13:42
would happen after
13:43
that McKenzie also princ and grad and
13:47
sitting here in the second
13:48
row told me I should go for
13:52
it as a young boy I'd been a garage
13:57
inventor i' inv vented an automatic gate
14:00
closer out of cement filed tires a solar
14:03
cooker that didn't work very well out of
14:05
an umbrella and aluminum
14:07
foil baking pan alarms to entrap my
14:11
siblings I'd always wanted to be an
14:14
inventor and she wanted me to follow my
14:18
passion I was working at a financial
14:20
firm in New York City with a bunch of
14:23
very smart people and I had a brilliant
14:26
boss I much
14:27
admired I went to my
14:30
boss and told him I was going to start a
14:32
company selling books on the
14:35
internet he took me on a long walk in
14:37
Central
14:38
Park listened carefully to me and
14:42
finally said that sounds like a really
14:45
good idea but it would be an even better
14:48
idea for someone who didn't already have
14:50
a good
14:55
job that logic made some sense to me and
14:59
he convinced me to think about it for 48
15:01
hours before making a final
15:06
decision seen in that light it really
15:09
was a difficult choice but ultimately I
15:13
decided I had to give it a
15:14
shot I didn't think I'd regret trying
15:18
and
15:19
failing and I suspected I would always
15:21
be haunted by a decision to not try at
15:27
all after much con consideration I took
15:31
the less safe path to follow my passion
15:35
and I'm proud of that
15:39
choice tomorrow in a very real sense
15:44
your life the life you author from
15:47
scratch on your own
15:51
begins how will you use your gifts what
15:54
choices will you make will
15:57
inertia be your guide or will you follow
16:01
your
16:03
passions will you follow
16:05
Dogma or will you be
16:09
original will you choose a life of
16:12
ease or a life of service an
16:16
adventure will you wilt under
16:21
criticism or will you follow your
16:24
convictions will you Bluff it out when
16:26
you're
16:27
wrong or will you
16:31
apologize will you guard your
16:33
heart against
16:36
rejection or will you act when you fall
16:39
in
16:40
love will you play it safe or will you
16:44
be a little bit
16:46
swashbuckling when it's
16:48
tough will you give up or will you be
16:55
relentless will you be a cynic
17:00
or will you be a
17:04
builder will you be
17:07
clever at the expense of
17:11
others or will you be
17:18
kind I will Hazard a
17:21
prediction when you are 80 years
17:24
old and in a quiet
17:27
moment of
17:29
reflection narrating for only
17:32
yourself the most personal version of
17:36
your life
17:38
story The telling that will be most
17:42
compact and
17:44
meaningful will be the series of choices
17:47
you have
17:48
made in the end we are our
17:52

10/10 video. There are many commencement speeches out there that are incredible. However, this one stands out for me due to the ability to relate to everything he's saying. I think this is one that can really inspire me as a college student and the future choices I make.

I love the focus on choices making us what we really are! I wonder what he means by "service", but I like how he clarified that being clever and kind aren't opposites. You can be clever and not stomp on other people. The choice is what you do with your gifts.

There is no doubt he has created one the most innovative company in the world, and he worked hard for it. But there are also other people out there who not only created amazing companies, they also kept their humanity and good work ethic. This guy has totally lost his human side when it comes to work ethic. The work condition in Amazon is almost the same as in a slavery camp.

I really do not have to know. But the point is, this is not a stage where you go about briefing the audience about what Amazon is for 5+ minutes. Everyone know, there could have been better things told about the same what was unknown.

For those bashing Amazon:
It's much easier to hate than to love.
It's much easier to complain than to create something great for mankind.
You can hate all you want (to make yourself feel better), it doesn't make you a better person than the ones you hate.
Love you all ****

"harder to be kind than clever" - depends how clever you are or indeed how naturally kind you are. I personally find it easy to be both. I regard unkind people as stupid anyway.

In my view, Mr. Bezos presentation is perfection of excellence which comes from honestly blending sincere humility with creative genius and genuine caring. Those who recognize this have earned the right to view this video. Yes, absolutely, "it's harder to be kind than clever." In these days of easy anonymity it's even easier than ever to be lazily critical of everyone and everything. In days gone, certain types of criticism would have earned a red dripping nose.
