The part at the end of Adagio (F Major) starting at about 31:17
31:33 - melody between Violin and Oboe
32:32 - hopeful part
and then that
33:37 - ending phrase
is just beautiful.

This is the best performence of this piece of music I ever heard! How do you make the violin sound so delicate yet so exciting? I am not a professional musician but I know how difficult it is to play legato. Your playing is subtle yet strong without ever screaming the top notes.
Bravo Mr. Pearlman. You are not a pearl, you are a music diamond

It is such a pleasure to be alive, and to have experienced this level of musicianship and artistry. I was actually privileged to hear Lawrence Foster conduct the Houston symphony, Sibelius violin concerto, with Perlman as soloist 1977. It was a two night, sold out event...I went both nights. First night I was 5th row center, second night I went to the balcony to hear the difference. It was a stunning performance....simul-cast by KLEF radio....which I recorded...and still own. The difference between Perlman and the last couple generations of violinists is, he approaches the audience with the attitude, "I want to tell you a beautiful story, which I love". The others are "Watch how fast I can play, watch me stray from the score because you don't realize I'm just on an ego trip". Perlman is class....A-Z.

The cinsrant variable of typical Brahms is astonishing, miles apart from Beethowen, who is very harmonic and symetrical, but Brahms, someone else again! These composers are a delight to our souls, that for sure! Enjoy!! excelent interpretation on the violin! Well done indeed!

I have this piece recorded by the same soloist but with the Chicago orchestra.
There are many great violin concertos, and this surely is one of them. For me Brahms was a difficult composer to get into, but you realise how skilled at vast classical structures he was. And the violin concerto is a good example of that. Thanks for this upload...

Even now, still amongst the greatest performances of this piece. Such an unconventional style, vibrato, left hand position, nowadays probably banned from all academies and conservatoires, by my goodness it worked for Perlman. Such rhythm, such dynamic playing and such a sweet sound on those top notes. When you think about it, every bit of his technique is unconventional. Quite a tight grip, low in the left hand "V". Huge thumb all over the place. Extraordinary reach to high positions without needing to get the whole hand up there. A very individual vibrato which sounds fabulous, etc, etc.

The comment by Korean Jeong YunGal below says it all! Itzhak is not only a great violinist, but also a warm-hearted and deep man who understands and loves all the world. No wonder we can't help but get a little teary-eyed (especially we seniors) with his sharing of the ethereal fruits of all his decades of hard training and practice and dedication, with blood, sweat and tears, to perfect his art and pour it out in love and compassion over us all. A great master of the violin and of the heart and human mind. We need more loving and responsible humans like him on this earth!

MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCE BY THE MASTER IN HIS GLORIOUS PRIME !! For years I have regarded Perlmans Performance with Barenboim And The Berlin Philharmonic as his Greatest Effort Pertaining to this piece, until I Recently Discovered this Vedeo, which Captures Perlman in his Prime at The Height of his Powers !! I was AMAZED at the Quality of the Sound of this Vintage Vedeo Considering its Age !! IS IT JUST ME, BUT DOESN'T THE YOUTHFUL PEARLMAN , RESEMBLE FRANZ SCHUBERT !!?, ( MAYBE ON STEROIDS !!? )..... Just A Passing Thought !!..

Brahms Violin Concerto:
Mvt 1: One big chamber music festival with everybody in the orchestra involved significantly. The introduction is Brahms at his most sublime. Oh, the angst, the struggling, the despair that comes after the ferocious "con fuoco" entrance of the violin and goes on for pages at a time... The second theme just makes you want to cry if the violinist plays it really well.
Mvt 1 Cadenza: The soloist has to choose one that suits them, or write one. Always good when we hear the Kreisler cadenza, arguably the best one ever written, versus the over-played one by Joachim. More people should play the one by Milstein, it's also really good. Heifetz's only worked for one person: himself, so don't play that one either unless you really have some balls.
Mvt 2: Traditional "slow middle movement with an amorous melody" - a sort of love song. Sort of lacking in Brahmsian profundity in the violin but still nice, especially if played well and with all the smaller nuances written in the score. Principal Oboe player spotlight. Barber liked it so much that he did the same thing 70 years later in his own Violin Concerto with a really heartwrenching middle movement.
Mvt. 3: Like the Mendelssohn Concerto before it, now we are going to enjoy life!! Throw all caution to the wind and have a rip-roaring good time. The joyful exuberance of the opening is borne out in a rather simple melody that Brahms was able to develop into quite a good climax with fingered octaves and arpeggios. After that it plods along a little bit...not the absolute best ending of a concerto but it wraps itself up in a grand sort of fashion.

I saw Mr. Perlman in recital in the 1980s in Spartanburg SC USA. It was a "community concert series" affair. His performance was excellent and he was without question the most gracious major artist I've ever seen. Instead of presenting himself as the superstar he really was, it was more like an old friend had dropped by your house to have fun making music. By the end of the evening, he had everyone in the palm of his hand.

This performance has definably gave us a wonderful preview as to what was coming, when Maestro Perlman had come out with a magnificent performance with the New York Philharmonic, along with his ever seemingly witty interview with Martian Bookspan, along with the release of the Brahms with Carlo Maris Guilinni,it will be virtually impossible to even to equal this level of performance, of great clarity and dignity.

There must be a reason why the “three heavyweights” - Tchaikovsky, Brahms & Beethoven Violin Concerti were all written in the key of D. They are all majestic & brilliant ! There are Some that believe the Sibelius in D minor should be included as the fourth heavyweight. However, this last work is written in a minor scale - D minor, relative of F major & is placed in the modern era. But, nevertheless it is also a great musical work.

What an artist, like Oistrakh and Szeryng before him Perlman understands the ebb and flow, the emotional heart of the concerto, unlike so many of the young "virtuosi" who seem to think that technical excellence is enough to satisfy. This is a performance that moves one, it has that tingle down the spine quality so rare nowadays. Bravo maestro, be happy, be safe.

Brahms's latter take on the LvB motif renders it, IMO, even higher than the master's work in this area.

Brahms is elegant, sublime, yet tempestuous. He was the perfectionist who blended Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. Yet he is unique and unmatched. It’s not easy to play Brahms. I have a personal record of this piece played by the legendary maestro Heifetz, and it has been my all time favourite. Yet I was absorbed by the sheer depth of Perlman’s ability, he has been able to transport us to the depths of the consciousness. What an amazing and blissful performance!

I'm blowing my mind comparing Itzhak with Hilary Hahn (from 2014), the way that each understand the music, and the differences in technical skill. Hilary is much more technical, more in tune, and she makes each note sound extremely clear. But I think Itzhak puts more sentiment into each phrase, he's a better story teller, despite some notes are not perfectly in tune or clearly executed, the sound in general has more coherence. It's hard to explain. What really matters is how much I enjoy both of these beasts!

I grew up in a home with a parent who had "chops" i.e., was a talented musician. My mum used to play this when I was a kid. Had I wanted a career like Bobby McFerron's, I could perhaps have carried it off, since, to this day, I can scat sing the violin triplet riffs from the Tchaikovsky, syncopated and in 4/4 time, like the music to Romanian gymnast Lilia Podkopayeva's gymnastics floor exercise routine, i.e. Waltz of the Flowers in 4/4: "Boom boom boom boom! Scadoodle bebop, skadoodle dee doo, boom boom boom boom!" ....."
More typically, at my house growing up, the thing that would happen when my mum, in her practice session, got to the part of the Brahms where the oboe joins in, a musical symbol of boy-girl happiness, was that from the silence of our heavily wooded back yard, we would hear the sensitive, pure, "Ah-woooo-ooo-oooo!" of Alex, our grey, wolf-like Siberian Husky, joining in the music with his clear tonal howl, pointing his nose at the sky... Sometimes he would even match pitch.

14:35 the apex of the first movement. A beautiful concerto. I do have one complaint about certain violin concertos, that is some composers make the violin part too high and it sounds like the instrument is straining. Perlman does an excellent job at handling all of Brahms' demands.

Hard to believe that's 44 years ago. Itzhak Perlman seemed to be in much better physical condition back then. But at the end, I see he was on crutches even back then. Just much younger looking. Is he still alive in 2022? If so, I'd estimate he'd be in his late 70's or maybe early 80's. Geez, I'll be 77 myself the end of this month. In my condition, that's a real miracle.

3:38 Lawrence does some very good direction here - not too fast. It could've even maybe been a tad slower, so we really get the "BANG" of the violin sections on the dotted rhythm. Still very good though.

Man! He is still in his Prime, his performances can not age, they are not tied to time, they are timeless, when you listen to him, time has lost it useless values, time only recirded by Man, and no other! Ask your dog how old is he, he will not bother to bark to your satisfaction! We live in eternity, under the shadow of the Almighty! Let's see what you can make of Psalm 91, verse one, but of the authorized version! Or the Hebrew!

He is the only current player who does not put me into sleep playing Brahms. I am sure Brahms would have felt the same. Everybody else are so boring; many can play it beautifully, but only he makes it exciting at the same time.
Brahms is such a macho concerto; sorry to say, but I have yet to see any female soloist really got it. In my opinion Perlman is as good as Oistrakh.

He said piano is easier to play than violin (using twinkle twinkle little star as an example) he in many passages referring to to the "sound" , it is hard to achieve the beautiful sound....it's not Steinway or Yamaha , it's not Strad or $ 69 violin. People went to hear Paganini playing an expensive violin and he smashed it after a few phrases ,,,🥵🥵🥵,🤔🤔🤔🤔😊😊😊😊😊

I've tried to listen to this piece a couple of times but I think either Brahms didn't know how to express himself or I couldn't get what he's telling. To me, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and even Mendelssohn are much much better.

My limited knowledge of classical music in general and violin in particular won't allow me to discuss the performance on a musical level (which as far as I m concerned is great). However I feel something is wrong with the shooting. The filming makes me uncomfortable... It seems too aggressive, all these close ups are annoying, as if the camera is trying to penetrate the musical work. It doesn't respect the music intimacy, and let us - unwelcomed surgeons - , dissecting the performance.

Amazing music, but the ending of the first movement on the concerto kinda gets on my nerves. I feel like it should’ve been in 3 notes so it would fit the rest of the song. The whole main idea is in sets of 3s with the F, D, A. It just doesn’t feel like a proper end to me. Idk if that is just me.
