The Real Skinny on Fat is a 9-part documentary series that uncovers the truth about FAT and how it affects your health, your weight, and your aging.
It is available to watch online for FREE beginning May 14, 2019 at 8PM EST. Be sure to sign up here to join us http://aff.therealskinnyonfat.com/aff...

Autophagy is a word we’ve been hearing a lot recently, and I have a strong feeling that this is just the beginning. On a recent trip to Tokyo I had the honor of interviewing Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi, the very man who introduced autophagy to the world and won a Nobel Prize doing so in 2016! (You can find that interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O_r-... )
Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi spoke honestly and humbly about our limited understanding of the full potential autophagy has, claiming he believes we only understand about 30% of what it can actually do.
That is an exciting prospect to consider, especially having come across some remarkable findings. Having the opportunity to talk to various individuals who are on the cutting edge is of course key in learning more and exploring this science. I find it extremely enlightening to learn from those who’ve grasped an understanding of what it can do for our health. Studying autophagy and its benefits for us is nothing short of a miracle, and something I want to share with all of you.
In today’s video, taken from our 9-part docuseries “The Real Skinny on Fat,” I talk to Dr. William Dunn, PhD, a professor of anatomy and cell biology at the University of Florida and one of the most respected authorities on autophagy. He has been studying the process for more than thirty years. His insight is truly fascinating and worth watching to begin to understand the science and benefits of autophagy and how you can activate it.
I hope you enjoy the interview excerpt and please be sure to post your comments and questions below. This is definitely going to be a subject we will be devoting a lot of time to, so expect to see more videos on this channel. I began fasting at 8 hours and then increased by one hour each day, with only the occasional slip . Now I’m at 18 hours with a 6 hour eating window. I’m working towards 36 hours fast. I feel fantastic

Eating all the time is so psychologically programmed into most of us. I found that doing fasting, for me, was 99% changing a habit.

6/29/21 my autophagy & cell cleaning occurred at “20hr fasting -4hr eating window” I’m a graduate of “16-8” In 2019 & dropped 18Lbs. Today Since doing longer fasts Or 1 meal a day, Within 3 days the redness in my face vanished by doing “20-4” Amazed😊.

At 57, I was fit and about 220lbs, athletic. But, I was feeling old. Previously I rarely ate breakfast when I started IF. Doing IF I immediately began to feel better. Im terrible at fasting and often cheat in the afternoon. Occassionally, I will fast all day. The improvements I have noticed are numerous. Skin, memory, joints , attitude. I feel decades younger. I recommend to all.

I've never been hungry during the morning. Now I'm doing omad and I do feel it is so easy for me. First month was kind of hard, but now I am so used to it I barely even get hungry anymore. It's more of a mental battel cause I was used to eating so often

Currently doing OMAD and loving it for the last 12 months. Just finished a 7 day fast which really helped my chronic shoulder pain which I thought may need surgery. Will go 10 days soon - love intermittent fasting - great video thanks.

I’m 59. My wife and I started IF two years ago. To begin with, it was pretty tough as I was basically a sugar junky! I persevered and gradually got to 18/20hrs fasting. Two years on, I lost 18kg/3.5stones and IF has become a life style. I run 8.5k 5 days a week on empty stomach and I’m faster and more agile than before started IF. We both have bags of energy and plenty of focus that never thought I possessed! For my 60th birthday in March, I’m planning 10k run every day in March followed by a marathon at the end of the month. We now do a 48hrs fasting the last weekend of every month to maximise autophagy. IF has been a game changer for quality of life and longevity.

I happen to work at Penn State, so that was kind of neat hearing that the Dr. started his journey there. I have been using a keto diet and IF to control my type 2 diabetes now for around a year. I have lost 22 pounds, back to my proper weight, and have been able to stop using all medications to control my diabetes. It really did not take long at all to get used to fasting, I don't find myself getting hungry ever. I am just starting to research how autophagy works and how I may benefit from it. Thanks so much for the informative video.

OK, here is my two-cents:
Today I fasted for 18 hours. I have done a total of 20 pull ups. At the end of the fast, and in of a twenty minute period, I did 150 jumping-jacks, 100 push-ups and 100 squats. I then drank a tonic of ice water, turmeric powder, matcha powder, ginger powder, cinnamon powder, stevia liquid and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. This was followed with a huge salad and 4 soft boiled eggs. Multiple cups of tea all day, either Matcha or Dandelion Root. Had some Milk Thistle with one of those cups of tea. During the eating window I snacked on 7 handfuls of Pecan nuts and two Brazil nuts. For dinner I had chicken soup with finally chopped broccoli as a topping. For dessert Lily’s chocolate. Later I will take vitamin supplements Zinc, Magnesium, Potassium, D3, K2, B-Complex, and C. Next is 8 hours of sleep. Well, 4 years ago I started my life style change when I was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation. I am 65 and my doctor is unable to detect Atrial Fibrillation. In closing, eat well rest well, keep hydrated, exercise moderately. Real food is medicine. The tools to optimize your health are HIIT, IF, cold showers, saunas, red light exposure, and meditation ( controlled breathing) Well there you have it, the things that are working for me.

I've been intermittent fasting for two months now and I don't find myself hungry when I wake up. I don't feel the hunger I used to have at all. My body has adapted to change quickly between burning glucose and fat, so my body doesn't need to remind me of eating often. This is one of the best reasons to have IF as eating pattern. I was just moderately overweight 52 Years/176cm/79,5kg and now I'm 73,5kg and feeling great mentally and physically. IF triggered growth hormone put me into lifting weights and IF is giving me feedback which foods are better for me, so I'm in a positive loop because of IF. I'm feeling (and looking) like 40 Years old again.

I’ve fasted most days of my life at least until 4:00 pm for years, as a religious practice. I feel much better when I eat once a day and later in the day. I do this most days, but certain days when I want to eat with my family, I eat however I want. I am 60 and I feel great.

I think the gateway to Enjoy fasting is by eating a Ketogenic life style. Hunger is suppressed and you stay satiated so 1 meal a day is really easy to achieve and when you want to fast for longer periods your body is more adjusted to it. Great topic!

Hmm, I do an alternate day fast and am not, at all, "starving when I wake up." I assume because I have a fat-burning metabolism and am on a ketogenic diet. The human organism has spent a lot more time going hungry between meals than it has spent having 3 meals a day. Overall, I enjoyed the interview Naomi.

To your discussion at the 9:00 minute mark, the more consistently you fast, the easier the transition period becomes. It may take months, but eventually your body will adapt. I can feel the changeover now when my body switches to other sources of fuel, and it only lasts literally a minute or so. The other thing that takes a long time, but eventually you'll adapt is to be active while fasting. I have been doing it long enough now that I can engage in vigorous physical activity while fasting and still have plenty of energy. This was not the case early on.

Can you trigger autophagy through 18:6 if during the feeding window you are eating to gain weight (ideally lean muscle) as part of weight restoration in recovery from illness? Or does weight gain in many form prevent autophagy and it's anti aging effects?

i started IF two months ago, i lost 11+kgs, my skin improved, my nails and hair grew fast and stronger, my heartburn gone, felt amazing and most importantly i reversed my insulin resistance. so much healthier/better focus during the day. I gradually started, firstly i fasted for 18 hours, then 20, then i do OMAD- 23 hours fasting and 1 hours feasting. My gut problems gone&i didnt experience hunger. I drank bulletproof coffee with some good coconut oil and drank 1tbsp apple cider vinegar when i get up/and while i'm eating. I quit sugar and went low-carb, i tried to get into ketosis but i don't know if i achieved it or not.
i stopped doing IF suddenly after losing 11kgs, just for experimenting, curious about what will happen. I introduce sugar and carbs back to my diet -in moderation, instantly i suffered gut problems, poor digestion, dry skin and pretty bad breakouts. so, i'm back with the OMAD diet, i'm feeling awesome, my problems are no longer here and still continue to loose weight. Highly recommented. 🤚🏻

His conclusions relative to autophagy and cancer cell growth are the exact opposite of Dr. Valter Longo, Phd out of USC. Dr Longo has an entire program using fasting associated autophagy to reduce cancer development.

For decades I've read about detoxing with conventionals saying it's fantasy. The body does that anyway all the time. Yet no doubt about the curative value of fasting etc. Looks like the answer lies in autophagy increasing massively with fasting etc. Must happen in normal circumstances too surely and to some degree.

Problem is that u need between 48-72 hs of fasting to get the benefits that this guy is talking about. If you are on ketos it could be reached already after 24hs. I like IF, but I'm not going to 48hs without food

I've been trying to figure out the nuances of her accent while watching her videos. Just curious. Does anyone definitively know about where she grew up? Parental influences? It could also be an intentional form that was later learned.
...Again, just curiosity while actually here for the science discussions.

He is very interesting but he said one thing that is concerning. If you have cancer you want autophagy turned off to decrease the possibility of metastasis. Most people will not know if they they have a cancer until it is well advance. As a result following this recommendation could hasten your demise in early cancers.

Just watched a video on autophagy by Dr. Fung. He says it takes 24 to 48 hours of fasting for autophagy to kick in and that as soon as you consume protein, autophagy is turned off.
If this is true then the only way to get any benefits from autophagy is to water fast for several days just to activate autophagy and then eat no protein in order to keep from turning autophagy off.
My question, how many days of autophagy do you need to see benefits if you are doing it for general health purposes ?
How often should you do it for those purposes?

I do wish all these doctors that discuss autophagy would give us a thumbs down or a thumbs up to it if you don’t know for sure if you have cancer cells in your body. It seems like it would be very dangerous to go into autophagy if you even think you might have cancer cells in your body. Since most of us will never know that, it seems like it should be avoided altogether. Think how many people watching these videos might decide they want to turn on autophagy to renew their cells in order to improve their body and their health, but might be harmed from doing it. And they have no idea that they are potentially endangering themselves because the dangers of autophagy are really never discussed on these videos. Something needs to be done about that.

So what he’s saying is autophagy helps protect cancer cells and tumours. So all these nutritionists telling us it’s good are giving us misinformation because if we have got cancer cells in the body or a small rumour starting and we switch on autophagy we are helping it grow and protecting it????

So, I don’t think that fasting for day or interminably not activate autophagy) in your body present mechanisms which before “self-eating” balance your level of amino acids and other biomolecules, and really fantastic thought that autophagy is saving mechanism 😃😃😃😃for your cells, this process out of your view,

My doctor laughs at me when I bring up fasting and keto. But he is very impressed with my washboard stomach muscle. I’m age sixty 169lbs, 5 years ago I had joint pain, pre diabetic and 200 lbs. I only see my once a year for blood work, and the numbers are good. Most people recommend talking to your doctor, however most of them don’t understand nutrition or tell to eat Three meals a day and reduce fat and eat grains. Food pyramid needs to be changed, the food conglomerates control the government along with the drug companies.

He feels the most important meal is breakfast which I don’t eat any more. I have dropped 25lbs and I am able to maintain my weight of 125lbs and I am 5’6” so this is so exciting! I’m now a small in most of my clothing. It really has changed my life.

I have been on a intermittent fasting journey for around 9 months now. I use the 18/6 method and I have lost 64 lbs. But the real bonus for me has been Autophagy. Every 4-5 weeks I will go on a water fast. The first time was for 72hrs. Then I did it again for 96hrs. The benefit of mental clarity is eye opening. But the benefit I noticed mostly is that the pain I used to experience in both my knees has become so much more manageable. No pain killers. Just letting nature do what our bodies are made to do. I do on occasion get sore knees again. But not anywhere near as bad as they were. I also walk a great deal. Anywhere between 6-10 miles a day. Most days it around 7 miles in under 2 hours and these days that is done with comparative ease. I cannot recommend strongly enough the real benefits of Autophagy. And I certainly feel that Doctors and more health practitioners should be doing more to promote this. Especially if you are overweight or someone with constant symptoms causing you pain. You have absolutely nothing to lose, and everything to gain by trying this.

Excellent video that gives a concise but well explained summary of autophagy and fasting. Can’t wait to share this one with my wife. I am about to turn 46 in another week and I have been doing something different this year. Through a combination of getting back into the gym for 60 minute workouts three times a week, better eating habits which include an 80% reduction in processed foods, and a healthy balance of intermittent and longer-term fasting (my longest so far is 40 hours but I hope to improve that to 72 and beyond) I have so far reduced my weight from 205 to 188 and more importantly I feel better, I think Sharper, and I’m not dreading 46 like I once was. I’ve replaced numerous pounds of fat with muscle growth! I’m now on a quest to be healthier and more physically fit at 50 than I was at 30.

Nicely done. I'm 58 and a 7-year vegan that eats once a day between 4:30-6:pm with 20-hours of fasting...” daily”. And it feels amazing! My blood test says it all. No more IBS, kidney stones, bloating, and my acute pancreatic pain went away.
My motto is, very, very little sodium, avoid the nightshades, caffeine, get sugars from the plants and low sugary fruits, avoid GMO's, alcohol, eat mostly anti-inflammatory foods, and eat processed plant-based meat-less products sparingly.

I'll never return to the 3 meals a day, and I'm convinced most everyone will be doing some form of fasting in the not-too-distant future. There's so many benefits! One point I try to emphasize with those people who wonder about hunger when fasting is this: I generally eat from 9AM to 12 noon each day and my body quickly became accustomed to this pattern. I never get hungry in the evenings and feel fine most all the time.

Thank you, Dr. Nambudripad, for a clear, thorough review of autophagy and its benefits. There is a lot of dubious, melodramatic information about health posted on YouTube. Your video was like a breath of fresh air. I wish that more YouTubers would adopt your clear, well-organized approach to discussing health-related topics.

I have seen many YouTube videos on autophagy, but this one is one of the easiest to grasp and well presented! I practice intermittent fasting myself (6 days a week of 16/8 and one day of 24 hr fast). I have seen many of the benefits described here, including weight loss (BMI of 31 down to 24.5 in 2 years) and complete reversal of Type 2 diabetes within 6 months. A switch to a completely plant based diet also helped. These strategies are well worth following, and as mentioned in the video, fasting is essentially free!

I intermittent fast 23 hours a day with a one hour window to eat and it's OMAD. I do a healthy Keto. I also try to to a 48 hour water fast once a week. And, I walk 3 miles every morning every other day. I've lost 50 lbs in the last 3 months. I don't even get hungry throughout the day.

One of the best videos I have watched regarding Autophagy, Intermittent fasting and so on. I was kind of missing some more comments about what happens in the body when we eat and insuline are produced regarding fat storage and how this hormone stops the Autophagy process. It is a great compilation of all the information I have obtained about the subject from T. Delauer and Dr. Berg to mention some of the more well known resources in this field. Thank you so much for a great video which I have already shared with friends.

Excellent video. My first water fast was 36 days, after which I started a keto OMAD routine. Now I am on day four of another fast. I have lost close to 50 pounds in just over two months. I have another 45 or so to go to get to what I weighed in my younger days, but at the moment I am feeling very good!

I’ve been fasting on and off for decades, and only got more serious about doing IF in the last couple of years. Your inclusion of autophagy is excellent, and so important for the bigger ‘health benefits’ picture. I’m passing along this great yet simple video to all I know who want: goal A, B, C… or complain about: malady A, B, C…. Rajsree, you really struck a perfect balance between providing knowledge, and making it easily digestible (pun not intended). :)

I do fast for Autophagy have been doing it about two years. The positive results at a requested eye exam lead to Dr./patient conversation. I had 3 eye improvements and I’m 75 years old, when we were done talking about fasting/Autophagy he said he’s going to do more research on, he thought it was vary interesting. I’ll just say I feel like a metabolic super power. I don’t have any prescriptions in my house. 2 days twice a month is my favorite.

Very informative very eloquent clear description on what's going on with your body and ways to heal your body. with the benefits of intermittent fasting. Thank you💕 for many years inadvertently I may have been doing this in my working day each day. I used to take my beautiful Daughter to school she used to like me taking her and picking her up from school. I was self-employed and I thought I can do this. I used to drop her off at 8.30 and pick her up at 3 p.m. from when she was little First School right up until she was 16, from school, (from when we she was 15/16 sometimes she walked home, but I always make sure to be home to greet her) this gave me 5.5 hours work straight through with no lunch breaks then get her evening dinner ready so that meant I hadn't eaten from 5 p.m. to 5 p.m. my job was very hard physically outdoors I just used to run on filtered black coffee in a flask all I had all day was just one small square 1 inch by 1 inch what I called an energy cake I made which consisted of wholegrain self-raising flour one complete orange and lemon with peel with some cane sugar blended and baked. I had to have something because once I nearly fell over where I went a bit wobbly. I used to sometimes feel like I was revving like a racing engine but I gained working time by not having lunch breaks and working straight through. I noticed I felt extremely fit and I had good muscle definition. I became very attached you could almost say addicted to filtered coffee. Extremely sadly, emotionally very hard to deal with my beautiful Daughter took her own life - non deliberate suicide-- at 16yr 2 months old with taking a massive overdose of her prescribed medicine. In Remembrance of her I still drink filtered coffee every day it reminds me of the good times my beautiful Daughter and I had together I used to take her to work with me it was safe we were in the middle of nowhere or Fields was sometimes people's gardens. I visit her garden every day, I have difficulty saying grave I call it her garden. I go to see her everyday without fail it has been 8 years 5 months 1 week 5 days. I lght 2 candles on her garden in small lanterns so the wind don't blow then out, although I can tell the way the wind is blowing through the trees there probably won't keep a light some days but I try anyway. The kindly doctor you came out to me, a day later I think after my Daughter went away. I was really really traumatised crying, beyond words what feels like. He was really good words and advice, he said when you're ready go to work, work is good, do whatever it is you need to do each day keep busy. I understood what he meant take your mind off things, not to think. Very often there was no one there I used to be crying at work every day. 1-year ago One day I know it's my heart was like missing a beat or the next one would be a very big beat. Concerned I went to the doctor's when they wired me up my heart was good my blood pressure was I though 167/ 85 when I mentioned The coffee thing I got up to 2 L A Day they stopped writing and said that that wouldn't help your BP. I completely stopped it's now 119 / 69 I have started drinking the coffee again but no more three quarters of a litre / 1 pint I have not come to terms with my daughter going I've just learnt to live each day💕💕 I apologise if this is too long comment but seem to help writing

Autophagy is a completely new word to me and one I have come across recently, so decided to investigate further. You video popped up and I though perfect!! You have blown my mind with such a clear concise explanation. I have suffered for years with an autoimmune condition and depression, I recently reached a crisis point and felt the only other thing I could change was my diet, skip toward 3months and I have learnt so so much about the mind body connection. This is the icing on the cake and has propelled me further with my diet and IF. Thank you so much 😊

Very well done! I could relate to the male star of your video, Kevin, as that’s my name and I also suffered from metabolic syndrome and pre diabetes, which have corrected with a ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. BTW, I’m a board certified internal medicine physician, and virtually none of my colleagues recommend a low carb diet or intermittent fasting to their patients, and many think I’m ignorant or downright reckless for advocating this lifestyle

In between doing a short 12 hour fast and a fast which lasts for several days, I imagine there would be various stages of autophagy which the body would go through, and which would be more beneficial on a cellular level.

This video is FANTASTIC~! It covers every base. I've been practicing fasting off and on for about 2-3 years and you've finally made the coffee question clear for me. THANK YOU~!! I'm using this info to reverse type 2 diabetes and have just shared it. I'm sad about the coffee creamer, but now armed with a CGM, I can see the blood glucose spike which definitely shows it stops my autophagy. I do not like black coffee, so may drink tea instead during fasting. Thank you again!

I went from 230+ to 155 using carnivore 0MAD 20/4 and fasting 24+ every 6 weeks. I can tell you that I feel better now than I have in decades. I also have the lab work to back it up as well. Tip: Don't try and go all the way right off the bat. Keep turning up the dial on your fasting interval, eat low carb/high fat/high protein - shoot for ketosis first, then move up to fasting. (<10g/lots/150g+) Once you can do 0MAD you can easily do 36-48 fasting. Some fast periods that I do are because I missed my feeding window and I don't want to change my schedule, so I just hold off until the next normal feeding window.

I read a lot about autophagy and I’m on intermittent fast for years.
I read in some arrivals that autophagy can feed cancer cell. Meaning that the cancer cells also learn how to survive better in the autophagy conditions.
What is your opinion?

We should add the role of acetyltransferase and P300 protein that inhibits the Autophagy.
So low energy = lack of Acetyl-coA = inactive Acetyltransferase = inactive P300 = Autophagy.
Also, once a day meal could cause autophagy when walking/aerobic exercise is incorporated. Or if we add Spermidine or autophagy inducer.

It is interesting that Pythagoras appeared to be a vegetarian and he “would not eat certain things that were not good for the mental function“ or, in the Old Testament book of Daniel, Daniel was vegetarian and fasting, claiming it would give him more insight into prophecy and dream interpretation. The ancient mew there was something very important to what we put in our body and what we do not

Studies in RATS show autophagy in 24 hours. However, rats starve to death in 3-4 days if they fast that long. No research on autophagy in humans. :( Did you get that from this video? FYI

We don’t know if autophagy slows down after 48 hours of fasting though do we? There’s nothing to suggest it does, I’ve also seen studies that say if you aren’t already in ketosis you have to fast for 72 hours just to induce autophagy?
