The Story Of The Best Shooter In The NBA: Japan’s Yuta Watanabe
Yuta Watanabe has recently gained some fame for his incredible 3-point shooting. However, this isn’t the first time Watanabe has had a taste of the bright lights as both pressure and expectations have followed him around for years. Dubbed the ‘Chosen One’ by Japanese media, Watanabe has had a lot on his shoulders since moving to America to pursue his basketball dreams. The journey hasn’t been as smooth as he must have hoped, but his current success must be all that more satisfying knowing all the ups and downs he has had to navigate to get here. This is one of the reasons why his story is so compelling. As it can teach anyone hard work, discipline, and a never give up attitude.

Yuta gives a example to lots of Asian hoopers who have the dream challenging NBA. He is an admirable player that make every endeavor to defense, grab rebounds and hit the three. That’s why the Nets coach always puts him on the court at clutch time.I love his passion and energy.Sincerely wish him has a long career. ——From a Chinese fan

We Asian males are invisible at everything: movie, social life, music (expect BTS) but especially in basketball. If you are not yellow male, you’d never understand this « you are not one of us » atmosphere every time you on the coat. Yuta must have faced that too. He’s not only physically gifted but able to change this harsh fate of all of us yellow brothers by his tremendous amount of work. After Linsanity, we really appreciate him too for giving us a chance to be in the society. Much respect!

8:00 Akiko kuji already married Yuta in May this year. By the way, her hometown is the same as Shohei Ohtani, and the mayor of the hometown once tried to arrange for them to make a couple before Ohtani came to MLB. Obviously, she was interested in it, but Ohtani was not ready for it cuz he was in love with Baseball too much. After all, she' ve got Yuta.

Watanabe barely takes shots he averages only 8ppg. Curry averages 30 and more people are trying to stop him. Of course he's hitting at a higher rate he's taking eat less shots and he's wide open when he does.
3pt% goes down the more you shots you take

Calm down lol 3 point king. He averages 19 mins a game and has only attempted just over 60 3 pointers all season lol. If he played more his 3 point percentage wouldn't even be close to where it is now.

Yuta Watanabe play really good this season. Brooklyn Nets actually never thought that Yuta will be this valuable, that's why Yuta only get a little money this season from the Nets. Right now, Yuta arguably the best bench player in Brooklyn Nets. He is not just can spread the floor, but he also can defend and hustlin' in every game.

Facts. His performances on this stage won’t go unnoticed and it isn’t a coincidence that he had stints with teams known for finding under the radar talent. I can see his confidence really blossoming in Brooklyn and being his jumpstart to a great career.

I currently live in Japan, I think he was misunderstood due to cultural reasons. In Japan, drawing attention to yourself, boasting and trying to stand out is often frowned on. If you are unfamiliar with this culture, this might be viewed as someone who does not have drive or is soft. I'm glad he is finally getting recognition for his abilities.

Yuta senpai is a fundamentally sound basketball player. At 6'9, that's value in and of itself. I'm glad he's getting recognition now because that Ant Edwards dunk hurt. I knew he was a good player and getting dunked on because you were trying to cover for a teammate's missed rotation is sad. Casual fans wouldn't understand that the person who missed the rotation is rarely the person who gets embarrassed, the guy covering their ass looks bad.

It was nice that Toronto gave him a chance and they definetly earned the few million they paid him back in exposure and jersey sales. Teams should recognize that people from countries that don't have a lot of NBA talent will become die-hard fans when they get a representative on their teams so Yuta's value media wise goes way beyond what they are paying him now, hope he gets a bag next season.

First Uta game I saw was this year. Right in the middle of the Nets’ peak early season dysfunction before Nash got fired and Kyrie got suspended. The entire team was dragging. No one looked like they even wanted to be on the court. Except one guy, going full blast every play, hustling to every ball, playing unrelentingly tenacious defense. Uta. If you factor in the Nets are only paying him $2 million and the cap space that creates, Uta might be the most valuable role player in the NBA rn.

He was a guy i KNEW the league wouldn't give a chance despite his talents. I was hoping the warriors would draft him in 2018 but you know the story. After seeing a leap in his game at the Olympics, it just felt like a shame that the Raptors were just saving him for garbage time

Nice breakdown video. Too many players aren't good at moving without the ball and it's totally underrated, but all coaches love defensive players. Defense coupled with his shooting, he should see some good offers after this season.

This is great for Yuta. I've been following him since his college days. It's great to see that he's finally getting some solid minutes. I don't think he's going to hold that 50% three point percentage for the whole season. He's on a team with three all stars, so team defenses aren't really focused on him. That might change considering all the buzz going around. However, he's still very solid offensively and defensively. Great pick up for the Nets! I just hope he continues playing well.

I LOVE the hype that's been behind Yuta since his move to Brooklyn. As a Toronto fan I was sad to see him go as he was easily one of our top defenders, but he was clearly missing the shooting. What I love about him though is his hustle. He NEVER gives up on plays and he's always willing to put in the work so to see him add the missing piece which was the shooting has been fantastic. I hope he continues to do well in Brooklyn (except for when he plays against us) and I hope he continues to have a prosperous career because he's got a life long fan here! Great video!

Heading into the World Cup co-hosted in Japan next summer, team Japan is looking really good with Watanabe and Hachimura both in good form. In my estimation, the only thing that will really hold Japan back is the lack of a true answer at the five. Maybe instead Japan will run some small ball lineups with Hachimura at five and Watanabe at four. Anyway I hope they surprise some people!

Whats good Treese! Great video! As a Brooklyn Nets fan, I got to watch Yuta Watanabe more and he is one of my favorite players now. He brings great energy to the team. Plays great defense with his hustle on the court and banging threes with his smooth, quick release is the icing on the cake. What I have noticed is, Yuta brings a great vibe to the team, something at times the Nets are lacking. He is always smiling and making the game more fun for his teamates and us Nets fans. I even seen Kevin Durant and many other Nets players big cheesing when Yuta is around them. He keeps the team playing loose and free. The last game I saw Yuta play, he got a standing ovation when coming off the court. Us Nets fans truly appreciate Yuta Watanabe. I truly hope Yuta can continue to hoop it up and stay with the Nets long term.

He's basically the whole vibe of Japan. Everything well-designed all around, every detail is paid with attention. I mean I know there are junkies in Japan too but hear me out. I have many Japanese friends. Seeing how they are brought up, It actually expressed in many ways, specifically discipline. If you get a chance to see even how Japanese high school basketball team practice, you'd probably understand why his game is like this.

It's pretty funny because I think Rui was also leading the league in 3pt% at one point last season lol. Went under the radar because it was halfway into the season so he didn't qualify for leader boards. Still cool to see both Japanese players topping something tho :D
Of course Yuta is a better shooter, happy to see him get recognition even if it's just 14 games

Honestly I think race plays some role on why Yuta wasn’t taken serious and overlooked. Many NBA teams needs shooting role players and defenders. But because he’s Asian he’s not taken as a serious basketball player (Same went with Lin). You have to be a freak like Yao to make it impossible to ignore.

If Yuta was "cocky" by today's standards and believed he "deserved" a big contract, he might have gotten one. American culture is all about "boasting" yourself and others' beliefs in you. I just hope people see him for what he is: a great ALL-AROUND player with no BS or drama... he's a modern-day Scottie Pippen.

Glad finally he sees the light he’s deserved! Honestly, not in the US though I participated in a club practice in France one of the countries producing tons of NBA player. Their defense was, excuse my word, kind of joke. Although I felt absolute gap of physical capacity on offense and size advantage of non Asians (I’m Japanese). Being realistic, I admit that eastern Asians are not gifted physically than others. But even my high school era, our training was every single day 5 hours like army. During summer it’s like intensive 7 hours except 2-3 days off. If we were physically gifted like Rui Hachimura, Yuta Watanabe or Yao Ming, we can hoop as others. We just too short by genetically reason 😞

great find by the nets and possibly the best story coming out of brooklyn this season. i just hope his media-friendly, hardworking personality doesn't get corrupted by simmons and kyrie. it would be sad to see a blossoming player not develop properly due to being in the wrong culture.
he's definitely getting paid next season and i do hope he goes to a winning team with a better culture. or to be honest, the nets would be much better season getting the right kind of players around KD, resigning watanabe and getting rid of kyrie and ben.

Yuta is perceived as soft primarily due to his ethnic appearance. He's Japanese and most people in the West perceive Asians of all nationalities as "soft" or "meek." Like Treese said, you don't become defensive player of the year in any league by being soft. Yuta doesn't have the bravado of an American player.

Yuta is one of the best defenders in the league. The scouts were a bit correct though, he was very timid on the offensive end, an always "pass first" player to a fault. In the NBA you gotta have the balls to shoot the ball when the opportunity is in front of you. You don't pass up an open shot, which he has done numerous times on the Raptors. Hopefully he has corrected all that with the Nets. I don't doubt his potential

You do realize that the 905 Raptors are a championship team, right? They've produced multiple all-stars and coaches in the NBA.
Lots of role players end up relegated to the bench or lower in the roster, if an organization doesn't invest in their development.
Getting starter minutes on an elite G league team for the Raptors is a HUGE opportunity. Glad to see Watanabe getting some recognition for the work he's put in.

“Look at our starting lineup," Watanabe said. "Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Ben Simmons and me. It’s not disrespect, but what are you expecting from that group?" Watanabe asked of B/R. “You expect us to win because I’m out there. So if you’re watching from that lens, you’re expecting us to play well because No. 18 is out there."

Ppl. Need to start giving the raptors their flowers . This team really knows how to Develop talent . Wheb both parties move on the player Always finds a home
On a side note I believe if Boucher didn’t have that hot stretch to end the season and Otto didn’t sign . Raps woulda kept Yuta . His defence always kept him on the roster no question . His shots just didn’t fall like they do now . But ppl need to realize he’s going to come down to earth . And I hope that love stays . These type of vids I enjoy because I love the guy but pisses me off because it’s only made because what he’s done the last 10 games

This is what happens when you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Not to mention you have little to zero ego and just let your game do the talking.
Any team that trade away such a player in his prime will lose more than gain.

Love Yuta but he isn;t the 'best shooter' as he is getting open looks. Props for knocking those down amazingly consistently but they are wide open. He is a great value 3 and D player with athleticism that is so so needed for the team. Simmons finds him so well too so they are a great combo. Basically given how Joe Harris is playing Yuta might get really big minutes going forward and just what they need. He is a perfect role player

Basically the story of every Asian basketball player.
My best friend in high school was Asian and 6'4" and literally dominated every single person in school 1 on 1. Nobody could guard him. He destroyed every varsity teammate.
But the coach had him on the bench 90% of the time. Why? Coach literally said out loud it's cuz he "didn't belong". (Our school was in Brooklyn and it was 90% black, so it was very clear what he meant).
Pretty much every Asian basketball player that could have turned pro got pushed out.. only a couple actually stick with it and make it through.

If all you are mentioning is accurate, Watanabe might become a 6th Man of the Year candidate in the next few years. My thinking process for this is simple, he doesn't seem to be cut to be a superstar or franchise player, but he still is really solid, and could probably be part of many starting 5s, but, given his skillset of off the ball movement, 3 point shooting, and defense, he might be better as a 15 to 25 minutes per game 6th man, coming in from the bench to shift both the offensive and defensive approach of the team when needed. Simmilar to what Ginobili used to do for the Spurs back in the mid 2000s.
And honestly, i don't think 6th man or role player is his ceiling, if Watanabe has the necessary work ethic, and enough talent, he could be a top 3 player in some team, with how Simmons is performing lately, he could become a big part of the Nets later this season, it would be great if we all get to see a bit of him in the playoffs, to see if the pressure beats him or not.

I don't consider his previous stops with Memphis or Toronto a time for him being a scrub, when he has started at the end of the bench and on a two-way contract. He wasn't expected to do much like of a top draft pick, as he went undrafted in the 2018 draft. He just made his strides, and the biggest this season. If there was a redo in 2018 draft, he's a first round pick. While I think every player do play hard for their contracts, players like Yuta - four year college players and getting undrafted, their motivations to earn the full contract is more greater than those of a lottery pick.

I just hope he doesn't end up like Jeremy Lin, in regards to how the NBA treated him. The NBA unfortunately still has difficulties giving Asians the same respect as Americans (they did the same thing with Europeans back then as well), the owners and GMs still harbor anti-Asian biases against them when it comes to finding talent. The game of basketball has became a global sport and there are global talent to be discovered. Maybe one day people will stop using stereotypes against others and only look at their talent and skill.

Watanabe suffers the same perception that Jeremy Lin did. It is the perception that Asians are not athletic in comparison to his Black teammates! That may seem a volatile statement but one I truly believe an Asian basketball player suffers. When you see so many players past their prime, not close to somebody like Watanabe or Lin in BB talent, continue to get major minutes, it evidence of how athletic ability is perceived in the NBA.

Most unathletic big in the league. And lets call it for what it is, he is on the roster because of the huge japanese broadcast demand and marketing. Anyone who is constantly left open on the wing is going to get high percentage shots....

I don't know why top teams like bucks, warriors, celts, etc. Don't even bother to pick this guy. Mostly celt and bucks. Yuta got that lock down defense both perimeter and inside, and had shooting skills better than most of the players with his height. Bucks need a shooter and they pass guys like him, and celts need to add a better shooter and defender and they could get this for how much? 3 or 4m?. I swear it's probably team scout and coach are just dumb or just not giving opportunity against Asian guys.

He is not the NBA's best shooter. Give him praise, the praise he is getting is VERY valid, but to call him "NBA's Best Shooter" is wild. His 3-point percentage is high because his attempts are low. Not saying dude isnt a good shooter, because he is, but when your only attempting 3 to 4 three pointers a game all you gotta do is make 2 of them and your already at 50%. Again, not tryna take anything away from his success, or the fact that his is actually a good shooter, but yall gotta be careful when yall give ANYBODY a title like that. You can't call someone the best shooter and not expect people to pick it apart.

Proves there is a lot of discrimination of profiling players in US as there is only 9 spots to make team. Begins in High School where the profiling comes in when choosing players. I see many great players of Asian descent not able to make the cut or final roster spot. More then just Coached but parents of players insisting his kid makes the team which happens everywhere. Shame to promote this of US needing to at least given confidence of their skills. Blacks had to endure this when basketball was introduced here.

As someone who watches the NBA lots and is Asian. I feel like a lot of full blood Asians lack that dog in them, they are hardworking humble players ie Yao, Lin, Yuta, Rui. They often play their role and have good-decent fundamentals but aren't cocky/confident or put on highlight plays for the attention

4:31 Why is it that all of the very few Asian players in the NBA get this same treatment? You can't tell me there aren't any racial undertones here. Yao Ming, Jeremy Lin, and now Yuta Watanabe still get backhanded comments like that. I think after his stint in the NBA, Watanabe should consider playing for the Chinese or Taiwanese basketball leagues where at least he won't need to deal with this racist bullshit.

...Did you say he went from being a scrub? I understand with you obviously an American, you are certainly putting your freedom of speech to use, but how can you call him a scrub when he was one of top highschool prospects in all of the continent of Asia and then he did play ncaa division 1. Then he had multiple invite only nba tryouts. Your generation thinks that guys who never even got a nba tryout that do youtube videos on ball is life or youtube are great players LOL so what does that make a player like Yuta? You obviously never worked in any pro top tier pro league to call a player like him a scrub. He could easily play in Japan's top pro league and be a super star there and there are ex euro league/ ex nba guys that have played in Japan. There are a lot of basketball players you've never even heard that were not drafted that could walk into any park in America or open gym and tear it up that have played in the highest tiers of basketball except for the nba and lot of these guys that are top players in other countries believe me they all get paid well, live in nice homes and drive nice cars, when you call a guy who is a pro player a scrub does that really make sense? Look at Jason Siggers, he played overseas in 🇰🇷 and he gave Dort and OKC 40 points

I thought he isn’t good with catching defender’s eye to make a good use of teammates with his initiative . I mean he looked to be passive to fit in a game flow . But today , every defender can’t miss to see where Yuta and what want to do , then Yuta can even catch opponent off-guard with a pretend . He can play basketball smart . Keep at it .

Oh! He can't be stopped!
