1:19 it's the best way to support this Why was the Dam Built? 1:22 channel the foundation of the Three 1:24 Gorges Dam was laid in 1994 with 1:27 construction officially concluding in 20 1:30 2006 beyond the substantial Financial 1:33 investment required to construct the 1:35 world's largest dam China faced the 1:38 significant challenge of relocating 1.4 1:40 million people to clear the necessary 1:42 land leading to Social and environmental 1:46 disruptions the primary purpose behind 1:48 the construction of this massive 1:50 structure was to address several 1:51 pressing issues faced by China including 1:54 flood control hydroelectric power 1:56 generation and improved navigation along 1:59 the yanki river floods along the yanki 2:02 river has been a persistent issue 2:04 throughout China's history the river's 2:07 Basin is vital producing about half of 2:10 the nation's agricultural output and 2:12 traversing numerous major cities 2:14 including wuan which has a population 2:17 exceeding 10 2:18 million yanki River in Hub province in Significance of the Dam 2:21 central China the Three Gorges Dam is 2:24 the largest hydroelectric dam in the 2:26 world this 1.4 mil long conc Creek 2:30 gravity Dam boasts 34 turbo generators 2:33 and a power plant with an installed 2:35 capacity of 22.5 2:37 GW it also features an impressive 2:41 1,584 ft long Spillway with powerhouses 2:45 located on both its left and right sides 2:48 operational since 2003 the dam is a 2:51 crucial source of electricity for 2:53 Central and Eastern China as well as 2:55 Guangdong Province in the South the dam 2:58 is owned by the China three gorgeous 3:01 Corporation interestingly this Dam 3:03 created a world record for the highest 3:05 annual power production by a single 3:07 hydropower station in 2020 after 3:10 generating 3:12 11.8 billion kwatt hours it helped China 3:16 switch from coal-based power plants to 3:18 Hydro power plants as the country 3:20 avoided using 31.7 million tons of coal 3:24 moreover China successfully eliminated 3:27 86.7 million tons of carb carbon dioxide 3:31 20,600 tons of sulfur dioxide and 19,000 3:35 tons of nitrogen 3:37 oxide therefore the Three Gorges Dam has 3:40 helped the country produce cleaner power 3:42 and reduce its Reliance on coal which it 3:45 previously used in significantly large 3:47 quantities for power 3:49 generation the dam remains a symbol of 3:51 China's ambition and technological prow 3:54 showcasing the country's commitment to 3:56 harnessing renewable energy sources for 3:58 the benefit of its population Problems with the Dam 4:01 but this powerful Dam has remained 4:03 controversial because of its weak 4:05 capability of withstanding heavy floods 4:08 the dam received its largest flood peak 4:10 in August 2020 when torrential rains 4:13 increased the dam inflows to alarmingly 4:15 high levels though the Chinese 4:18 government has denied any possibility of 4:20 the dam posing any danger and passed all 4:23 power generation and flood control tests 4:25 in November 2020 experts doubt its 4:28 efficacy the they are worried because of 4:30 the many underlying issues China has 4:32 been turning a deaf ear to even with so 4:35 many different records that the Three 4:37 Gorges damn holds we cannot Overlook the 4:40 various issues that has become part of 4:42 the project so what exactly are these 4:45 problems to start with even before Displacement of People 4:48 construction began it was already 4:50 estimated by the developers that 4:51 thousands of cities towns and Villages 4:54 would either be partially or completely 4:56 submerged by the 4:58 reservoir because of this around 1.4 5:01 million people were forced to relocate 5:03 to Higher Ground although the government 5:06 provided compensation and assistance for 5:09 relocation there were reports of poor 5:11 quality housing lack of essential 5:13 amenities and inadequate infrastructure 5:15 in the new resettlement areas people had 5:18 to leave behind their homes farmlands 5:21 and their Impact on the Environment and wildlife 5:22 communities another issue that we cannot 5:25 Overlook is the poor water quality which 5:27 environmentalists are concerned about 5:30 the reservoir has gradually become a 5:32 repository for industrial and city waste 5:36 treatment plants should have been built 5:37 over the dam to address water quality 5:39 issues but there are none so far another 5:43 crucial aspect to consider is the 5:45 significant and lasting impact on the 5:47 environment and Wildlife around the 5:49 yanki river since the Dam's construction 5:52 landslides have become frequent in the 5:54 area resulting in millions of dollars in 5:57 Damages the yanki river River renowned 6:00 for its Rich biodiversity has seen 6:02 several plant and animal species become 6:05 endangered for instance the dam could be 6:08 responsible for the extinction of the 6:10 Chinese river dolphin and the Chinese Limitations in Flood Prevention 6:13 paddlefish critics have also question 6:16 the capabilities of the Three Gorges in 6:18 preventing major floods as seen during 6:20 the 2020 onsum 6:22 rainfalls the yank saw some of the 6:25 highest average precipitation in almost 6:27 60 years as the heavy rains caed the 6:29 River to 6:30 overflow more than 150 people were 6:33 reported to have died or gone missing 6:35 during this event prompting a closer 6:38 look at the efficacy of the project in 6:39 preventing such 6:41 disasters then more recently in July 6:44 2024 heavy rains caused the water level 6:47 in the dam to rise to 161.000 M the 6:51 highest for any July on record and water 6:54 gushed out from the dam through nine of 6:55 its flood discharge gates to spare more 6:58 capacity for incoming floods from upper 7:00 reaches of the yanki river despite this 7:03 severe floods persisted along the yanki 7:06 affecting several areas making it the 7:08 biggest flooding event since historical 7:10 records Will the dam collapse? 7:12 began from here we come to the main 7:14 question is the Three Gorges Dam in 7:17 danger of 7:18 collapse should the unthinkable happen 7:21 and the dam were to break a tsunami 7:23 likee wave from the breach Dam can wipe 7:25 out millions of Acres of Farmland 7:27 low-lying cities along the yanki Banks 7:29 may become uninhabitable and the 7:31 subsequent death toll would be 7:33 staggering the consequences would be 7:35 unimaginable communities devastated 7:38 lives lost and a landscape forever 7:41 changed such an event would put the 7:43 lives of more than 400 million people 7:46 living around the yanki river in danger 7:49 and how can we forget that it is the 7:51 world's largest hydroelectric power 7:53 station its failure would cause massive 7:56 power 7:57 outages it would also threaten the very 7:59 existence of major cities Downstream 8:01 such as Wuhan and Shanghai and would 8:04 prove catastrophic for the Chinese 8:06 economy experts have also pointed out 8:09 that this dam is built in an earthquake 8:11 zone already there are cracks visible in 8:14 the dam probably due to the use of 8:16 substandard building materials and 8:18 concrete during its construction 8:20 phase of course Engineers are aware of Structural Distortion 8:23 these issues and the dam undergos 8:25 regular 8:27 inspections however concerns AR when 8:30 satellite images revealed a slightly 8:32 distorted shape of the Three Gorges Dam 8:34 raising questions about its structural 8:37 Integrity a hydrologist was even cited 8:39 in the media mentioning the discovery of 8:42 cracks and substandard 8:44 concrete in response Chinese media 8:47 quickly dismissed these claims 8:49 attributing the viral images to 8:51 algorithm errors in Google Maps they 8:54 clarified that while the structure does 8:56 deform slightly it is not to the extent 8:58 depicted in the the images the situation 9:01 is complex but ensuring the Dam's safety 9:04 remains a top priority to sum it up the 9:07 Dam's significance goes beyond its 9:09 engineering Marvel it must withstand the 9:12 forces of nature as long as the 9:14 reservoir behind it Future Outlook 9:16 exists so what does the future hold for 9:18 this Dam the potential collapse of the 9:21 Three Gorges Dam presents a looming 9:23 threat with far-reaching implications 9:25 for China and the world while experts 9:28 differ in their opinions on the 9:30 likelihood and timeline of a damn 9:32 failure the potential risks underscore 9:34 the importance of proactive measures to 9:36 prevent such a catastrophic event and 9:39 Safeguard the well-being of those living 9:40 in the region in response to the 9:43 concerns authorities have implemented 9:45 maintenance efforts to address any 9:47 vulnerabilities and ensure the Dam's 9:49 continued 9:50 operation official statements and 9:52 reports on the Dam's safety measures 9:54 have been released outlining steps taken 9:57 to Monitor and mitigate risks 10:00 however the complexity of managing such 10:02 a massive infrastructure project amidst 10:04 extreme weather conditions poses ongoing 10:07 challenges for ensuring the long-term 10:09 stability of the Three Gorges Dam what 10:12 do you think can this Dam can be saved 10:14 or is its collapse inevitable leave a 10:17 reply in the comments section thanks for 10:19 That’s why it has to open the flood gates. Too much weight and stress on the structure and foundation. The velocity and weight of water rushing through the floodgates must cause vibrations throughout the structure. Let’s hope there no tofu in the dam’s concrete. 35 Reply 9 replies @21ED7 5 days ago What absolute damn nonsense! The title is clickbait !!!! Everything is collapsing, wearing out, could collapse from the day it is completed and this dam is no different. There will be a very small time period between 'could' and 'is' and until the time period has elapsed the word is 'could'. 32 Reply 2 replies @anacalon 2 days ago The ai voice is so crappy 3 Reply @charlesdenman9052 3 days ago (edited) Canadian civil engineers were hired by China to design the dam. The Canadians wrote that the dam’s design could only handle a reservoir of water 150 meters high. China’s arrogance built it to 180 meters because it wanted to jack up its electricity output. 150 meters of water height in the reservoir has been repeatedly exceeded because of heavy rains and upstream floods. The Canadians balked at a reservoir 180 meters high 6:53because the structure might not be able to withstand the loads. The Canadians were excluded from monitoring best construction practices specified in their design, so there is concern corners were cut in its construction. Even when it was built there were warnings from Chinese civil engineers and hydrologists. Politics prevailed. It was needed for political reasons. 43 Reply 3 replies @mundall1271 6 days ago I’ve seen videos with this same title for several years. If not well , that idea is terrifying. 3 Reply @dominicwood3451 7 days ago (edited) The dam itself isn't in danger of collapse, however one of the key reasons for building it - namely the supposed better control of water above and below the dam - has been undone less than two decades after its completion. If these floods become the norm then they may have to rethink the utilisation. A greater all round release of water, particularly in the drier months will be needed. It is clear that the danger of needing massive releases comes from the reservoir being too high all year round. They need to sacrifice some potential for generating capacity to keep the water level lower, so that in the wet season there is no need for panic measures such as 9-11 release gates being opened. 36 Reply 8 replies @chrisperrins8082 2 days ago I wouldn't live anywhere within 5 miles of this dam. 1 Reply 1 reply @BengGuan-hq8sb 6 days ago Well, it is still there, whatever you say. 2 Reply @KevinBrooks-en8ur 4 days ago When the water level reached it's highest, it actually tilted the world's axis.
