An auto accident 3 years ago has changed my life. I don’t walk the same. I struggle with my memory. Was forced to stop working. Was forced to isolate due to Covid. This interview has reawaken my determination to restore my social, mental and physical health. I’m encouraged to continue moving toward being the me I want to be. I remember speaking to my psychiatrist 30 years ago after a difficult divorce if he could safely suggest a safe psychedelic experience to better understand myself. He asked if I were asking him to be my drug dealer. I’m now encouraged to seek out a safe inward experience. This program has been a great encouragement for me to continue searching. The first couple of months were tough, the first 3 weeks in particular were hell. If you allow enough time, not only you will feel yourself again but better overall. Now I'm less anxious, I have consistent energy throughout the day and I feel I can focus on things better. Like when I was a teenager 🙂 I also rediscovered the pleasure of a proper breakfast in the morning and - most importantly - I sleep like a baby and have lots of dreams. Caffeine is a legalized drug serving a multi-billion dollar industry. It doesn't make sense to wake up tired and need a drug to get through your day. I drink lots of decaf teas now and feel more productive than ever. 210 Reply 23 replies @laurab9867 @laurab9867 3 months ago Now that I am a senior citizen, I notice how jaded older people are. Hearing this brilliant author say he is still naive and talking about 'not losing the sense of wonder' at his age is total validation. I am so glad I have not lost my curiosity and desire to learn new things. He also talks about habits being comforting but also stifling. I stay away from rigid thinkers like the plague. Anyway, there is so much to unpack here... Bravo, Steven! Another brilliant interview. 61 Reply 1 reply @Journey2Source @Journey2Source 1 year ago Michael Pollan...what a guy! I am learning so much about health and happiness and it's transforming my life and the life of my family in so many positive ways. This was another incredible guest. Mind blowing. Felt sorry for the cow though. When the cow wasn't saved, Michael described the experience so casually and dispassionately as if the cow was a tin of beans being put back on a supermarket shelf, rather than a sentient, feeling being who deserved to live. He should have saved the cow. I can't get enough of this channel. Brilliant guests. Stephen is so intelligent as well. 16 Reply 3 replies @sarsensurpri5986 @sarsensurpri5986 7 months ago (edited) Caffine part starts at 17:25 !!! I think its not initially the psychedelics, I think they can just trigger that experience you have to make by changing your perspective and way of thinking. I gladly achieved this by meditation and selfcare and I can tell you the worst thing you can do is doing drugs regularly, except maybe psychedelics under guidance. So what I am basically saying is: For those of you who don't want to try psychedelics to achieve that state of mind, you can do this on your own and as Wim Hof says "get high on your own supply" + Find comfort in discomfort!! 219 Reply 27 replies @sandyjones1014 @sandyjones1014 6 months ago We are so much more than we know. Thank you for your time and wisdom. I've been a coffee shop manager, I've been a stoner, a borderline alcoholic, a sugar addict, a smoker... I've been depressed for over 2/3rds of this lifetime. I've had a few moving psychedelic experiences and slowly but surely saw that my addictions were what held me down. I'm now a gardener and lover of life and only occasionally dabble with a previous crutch as a passing plaything instead of a lifeline. Now I am blessed enough to see the conciousness in every single thing around me and in everyone I look upon, even if they don't see it in me 👀👀👀 It's wonderful to learn a little bit about the ins and outs of the ride I've been on for nearly 38 years. You said something that caught my attention. When you explained what you went through in your garden and you likened it to be a spiritual moment and you said it was very profound for you; and much more. But that's the just of what made me perk up. That's how I feel about my belief in God, believing in God gives me the same profound outlook so much so I have such a close personal relationship with God that I don't think I would have made it through my life and all the horrible things that I went through. I started this relationship at the age of 8 and continued to this day. I don't attend a specific church, I don't have friends that think like I do although there are people out there that believe in God, but I don't know if it's in the same way, I don't fanaticly read the Bible, but I do research. I don't preach to others unless they ask me about it or it comes about in a conversation. Saying what you said gives me a different way of thinking about this spiritual connection, like your garden... Thank you. 21 Reply 2 replies @owsmindopsystem3617 @owsmindopsystem3617 1 year ago "The cleverness of plants..." what a great statement and idea. Hats off. That man seems to really know his stuff. Thank you! 14 Reply @0ptimal @0ptimal 1 year ago (edited) Psychedelics strike me as something seemingly custom made for mind. Perception is the ultimate aspect of being conscious. To experience the world is to perceive the world. Everything we experience is constructed in our own unique way, we shape how we see life and everything in it, consciously or not. And this aspect of perception is highly malleable, you can see anything from countless perspectives. It can take effort and time, or it can be quick, but altering how you see something is very possible, and the impact can be as profound as you can imagine. But psychedelics somehow tap into the process, and take you directly to arguably the ultimate perspective. But how? How is it that nature just happened to create something that influences mind to take on the optimal perspective? It's astonishing. I think these compounds mean something, I think they're a huge clue into the inner workings of reality and mind. That mind isn't just some result of a mechanical process, but something fundamental and psychedelics are grown out of or from the same source. It's like an early human walking in the woods and finding a glove, having no idea what it is, but realizing that the fit was too perfect to be random.(a possible explanation could be that the two have evolved together. Often you see things in nature that seem perfectly balanced and there's a long evolutionary process that's made it so. Could that be the case here idk) 7 Reply @jagdeepkaur7286 @jagdeepkaur7286 1 year ago amazing podcast, thank you for bringing michael on 9 Reply @lisalowy2443 @lisalowy2443 1 month ago (edited) Just about to make a cup of coffee while I listen 😂 I am shocked to learn that 1/4 of the caffeine is still in us at night if we drink a coffee a midday! My next psychotherapy apt a few days later my dr couldn't believe the change. It was night and day. I've done mushrooms a few times which helped in different ways, and I highly recommend these to anyone who isn't benefiting from conventional approach. No amount of meditation or mindful breathing exercises etc etc will do what psychedelics will and you'll lose many years trying to achieve it, where psychedelics can get you there with no delay. I think personally, I could benefit with another MDMA trip if she can source these again, and will definitely be doing mushrooms again, hopefully soon as it's been a few years and I could use a fresh "snowfall". I was surprised how quickly, like at the level well before insects that he said consciousness stopped. It became difficult to hypothesise with him what proto-consciousness might be let alone if it exists in plants or, at a stretch, in matter itself (aka panpsychism). Perhap the limitation is, as you say, the absence of psychedelic use on my fathers behalf.. im not saying I know about the degrees of consciousness in things, but I can imagine my capacity/interest to enter into the thinking of these things could well have been activated by a fairly robust history with psychedelics. It also legalizes personal private use, growing and sharing of psilocybin and psilocin, as well as three additional psychedelic compounds — DMT, ibogaine and mescaline — by adults over the age of 21.” -NBC News. Systems are more difficult to change than individuals. The corporations figured this out a long time ago and bought up the law schools through bribery and corruption. They've captured the law, it's easy for them to prey on individuals that step out of corporate line when individuals realize they need a change of system. Enjoyed the addiction to caffeine section. Have two days a week with minimal caffeine, it's been an interesting experiment with as you said, better sleep but little other difference. Sugar was a different matter as the withdrawal after removing that is far more powerful and mood altering. Again, the corporations also know this and ensure they put sugar in everything possible in order to keep up the addiction. Very profitable. How about a book on corporations and the human behaviours devoid of empathy which have risen out of their emergence. I used to think a lot about consciousness and somehow came to what I thought was a logical conclusion, that it is not individual, that it is communal, that it is carried by individuals as if they were hod carriers on a building site, each supporting a part of the communal 360 degrees of consciousness. It's just a theory, but as valid as any. Enjoyed the discussion. Thank you. I wasn't even aware of what I was doing to myself until I ran out of coffee over a weekend once. The symptoms of withdrawal where so severe (very strong headaches for more than a week, super low energy throughout the whole day), that I realized, I can't be that dependent on a substance. I can say, that was the best decision ever. I am much more awake and focused now throughout the whole day, than before at the "caffeine-peak". I sleep a lot better, and also all my stomach issues just disappeared. I can recommend everybody, to at least try it for 6 months and see for yourself. Reply @jackolantern2yt @jackolantern2yt 2 weeks ago I guess I'm a bit of a late-comer to this video. First, let me say that I'm really enjoying your interviews and your interview style. Your questions are very insightful, showing that you've really done your homework leading up to the discussion. I just wanted to comment on the many references to "the scientific worldview". This phrase is often used as a criticism by people who describe themselves as "spiritual" (a word I find to be largely meaningless, given all the ways it's used). The scientific "worldview" does not necessarily lead to amoral treatment of the natural world. Science seeks only to understand the mechanisms underpinning how the natural world works. It was people who were operating from incomplete scientific knowledge that thought vivisection was okay because animals didn't feel pain (because we were the only creatures in "God's" creation with the capacity to think and feel---science had not yet illuminated the error in this thinking, so religious dogma filled in). It is the people who turn away from what science is telling us that are marching the planet toward environmental calamity. Science is the best tool we've ever invented for understanding the natural world, and society ignores its pronouncements at its peril. Let me reiterate that I love your channel and really appreciate the work you're doing. Thank you for all your efforts! I study Naturopathy, and learned that caffeine causes an awake feeling, sharper thinking, and a better working digestion, beacuse it accelerates many processes in the body as it enhances many of the functions of the sympathetic nervous system. That's the one which is on when we are stressed, the one which is constantly on when we suffer from chronic stress, the one which breaks down when we burn out. I think the cost of caffeine gets lost in a stressful working/private/everyday life, and remains unseen until you stop. 12 Reply 1 reply @nefrettitim6823 @nefrettitim6823 7 months ago 📚 YES!! Unlike so many other products of its type, this CD does not have bad synthesizer music, does not feature a phony or affected style of narration, and does not make any bogus claims to be subliminal or to re-train the brain or any of that balderdash. The CD makes no claims to be designed for advanced meditators or for buddhists or hindus/yoga practitioners looking for very deep and esoteric stuff. It is geared more toward the average person who just wants to develop the habit of relaxation and stress relief through natural, healthy means. him, if you happen to be reading this, keep up the good work fella, and I love your accent. Whenever I feel tired during the day, the first thing that comes to mind is coffee or some other caffeinated product. Caffeine whips the adrenal glands to produce too much cortisol (stress hormone), even to the point of shaking hands. Caffeine always reduces the quality of sleep and thus creates the need for constant caffeine consumption. At least athletes understand what too much cortisol means, it means Catabolism. I can't live without it - it makes me happy, alert, I sleep well, I wake up energetic. Without caffeine I'm depressed, sluggish, foggy and non productive. I think people are physiologically different. It's not for all but I love it. 5 or 6 black coffees are good for me a day. I actually feel better drinking coffee than alcohol. As I've got older alcohol deadens me and makes me less funny and energetic. Coffee does the opposite. In the discussion afterward I noted how black English has become so much more mainstream in the last 50 years. This is something I have noted with my Maine cousins in that time period as well . Obviously the television and now tablets and cellphones have homogenized the English language to a large extent. This is just one way in which cultures are converging. It is important. Next we need more movement of more people to live in communities and neighborhoods with each other and churches with each other in order to make familiarity part of everyone’s daily lives. Addressing racial hatred can only be addressed when people live together and see each other as neighbors and friends. Maybe we need to start having coffee together. I was lucky as my family had annual vacations in different European countries (sometimes more than one per Summer) since I was five (year 1994) - then every country truly was different, despite already having Coca-Cola & McDonald's everywhere, the LOCAL brands & foods were very much dominating the market. Other self awareness can abuse it or through your own ignorance or you can be binded so that another has power over you. There is no victims only ignorant beings since you placed yourself in state of disposition. On psychedelics there are intellects which have no singular identity that can help you get unstuck - result automated reset to authentic self. When in reality according to science we live in different worlds. When I discovered caffeine late in high school I was suddenly able to graduate and actually participate in sports. I have absolutely no anxiety—perhaps the opposite problem. In addition, I did a DNA Test and found out I have the extra enzyme which breaks down the caffeine extra quickly. Like in 2 as opposed to 4 hours. So genetically, physiologically, I can drink 4 cups of coffee when someone more average would not be able to do that. I can drink coffee and fall asleep. No problem. Just wanted to be a voice in the wilderness of the mountain if data in the middle-of-the-bell-curve. Averages and means destroy everything truly interesting about individuals. All well managed with opiates, benzodiazopines. I'm a recovered (or recovering if you'd prefer) alcoholic. I've used most drugs but, cocaine at 15 was my only addiction to so called "Hard Drugs" . I've used LSD in my youth but, not enough to have anything like a spiritual experience. I've given up alcohol, cigarettes and I have just one 8 oz cup of coffee a day. The problems with nursing homes (at least in the US) , these for-profit, terrible places that those who aren't wealthy, or have no family willing to take care of them are more than I'd have time for so, I'll stick to this. I've used marijuana (psychotropic not psychedelic) for all the yrs of my life save . The one I stuck strictly to the teaching of Alcoholics Anonymous which suggest no mind or mood altering drugs. The benefits (for me at least) for me are so many. Creativity, a sort of laser focus that I'll describe using an example. I watched wheel of fortune and jeopardy in that order and was unable to concentrate enough to play "Wheel" as well as I normally did, so I smoked and I got every answer (question right) to single jeopardy right for the first time ever. It helped me with depression and anxiety and as a lover of music and guitar player the ability to hear things I'd never heard before in songs I knew well (cliche maybe) . It calmed me and helped me get excited and curious about things I'd have otherwise found mundane . Patience and the greatest thing is after many seizures from withdrawal symptoms due to alcohol withdrawal and finally going to AA meetings I'd still relapse every few months for a couple of yrs . Finally I had a reunion with some close friends I'd not seen in a few years. I smoked a little and resisted any desire to join in drinking. I began smoking at night after I was finished work and concisely put, I went a full year without alcohol. I'm not recommending this for everyone and I'd be dead without AA. These abominations, these for-profit nursings homes even though my state passed a law yrs ago legalizing medical marijuana, it's still illegal at the federal level. So even if it may be a great opportunity for pain management after I broke my back (fractured a vertebrae) and, insomnia, depression (which doesn't help my appetite) and general quality of life. I'm not the same person as Michael said of coffee. BTW I used to drink a couple of pots a day because circumstances demanded me to work exhausted. I once used deep breathing exercises I learned at a young age to help with insomnia and although it didn't help with the insomnia it was effective in situations where I was nervous and I even had a nurse tell me to stop once because she couldn't take an accurate pulse . I truly enjoyed this interview on so many levels but, I'm so cut off from most of the things I'm curious about that while writing all of this I have become upset by my own situation. This of course doesn't detract from how well I enjoyed the interview with Michael and Michael, as an interviewer you asked all the right questions and, you're interjections were interesting and perfectly timed and quite appropriate. I'm going to subscribe to your channel BTW. I've looked at just some of the people and topics on your channel and, so far I like what I've heard so you'll be among a very elite group . I don't subscribe to just anyone. All relationships are in a process of rebuilding. Miracle is the word to describe this experience. I am not this body, identity, or name any more, and the world is the great wide open. I just flushed one that was in my house down the toilet. Sigh. I haven't done psychedelics but have meditated a lot. I am listening to Michael's concern that people are going to get hurt. "Habits blind us to reality". Yes, love is the most important thing in the world! Comfort zones are a problem. I am 77 and love traveling to new places. Reply @jdt8983 @jdt8983 1 year ago Yeah I used to virtue signal bit. But felt like a hypocrite so I quit. Not sure how to fight certain systems or if I had the power to change certain ones - how I would go about it. I think there are a lot of people out there like me. As for the factory farming Im mostly vegan and occasionally eat farm to fork. But then I hit a punching bag which is likely a product of extreme animal abuse. But again - me hitting a punching bag = everyone trying to save his one cow. And being vegan counts a little more but still doesn't quite fight the system intelligently. I think a lot of people would fight certain regulations if they had the time and energy to educate themselves and had the insight on where to begin Reply @etandrepont @etandrepont 7 months ago I gave up caffeine 13 years ago. There are some interesting, very wise contributions originating from Buddhism and Hinduism.. (Advait Vedanta). Suppose you are a screen, which reflects.. That you are like water, where thoughts come and go like ripples. You ARE NOT your thoughts (this is from Krishnamurti).. you are the Observer and that's conscience. But if you are like this, why wouldn't your dog or cat be like that.. Typical for us humans is that our brains prefer to be in the past or the future, your pet a bit less.. It's more in the now. Would the tree in the forest or in your garden experience it's environment? Does it have some kind of conscience? It responds to its environment and the seasons. Would it experience some kind of feelings? A microbe.. The same? Fungus? You can go even further. After humans, the animal and plant kingdom, there is the mineral kingdom. These are "dead objects". Rock, meteors, stars, but also products made by people. Now we are lost.. A silly thought to propose that these lifeless objects have some kind of concienceness, because we cannot see it, nor imagine that they have it. But like trees have their treeness, rocks may have "rockness" ;) And the Earth as a whole, certainly has conscience (yes, Gaia). It seems Gaia has caught a fever lately.. You don't need mind altering drugs to show you the way, you just need a change in behaviour or scenery. By taking psychedelics you're going to open up a can of worms... A user runs the risk of ruining their mental health, unlocking fears or responses that often they won't be able to deal with I know this through experience. This trend of giving hacks like this guy a platform that promotes not dealing with issues and escaping via drugs is disgraceful. 6 Reply 5 replies @CC-cr1oz @CC-cr1oz 7 months ago I drink dark roasted coffee with out sugar or honey or milk, 3 x a day. It's a 'made up' term, to get people to believe that those books are somehow so popular that they have already sold millions of copies, when they usually haven't even yet sold ONE to any individuals. The closest they can come, is that they just assume that book stores and libraries will buy them in the future.
