He's arguably a top 5 defender already but its not just height/wingspan that got him there. He constantly makes the correct defensive read and has great timing that actually gives so much value to him as a rim protector rather than just jumping and hoping he gets a hand on the ball. He steps up when challenged by superstars. Everything about Wemby and his game screams future superstar. The eye test just doesn't give me the same vibe on Chet. He's good, but won't be a superstar. For me, it's an easy choice, Wemby is simply a better player. There is no debate, he IS better than Chet, has BEEN better than Chet before entering the league, and will BE better than Chet for their entire careers. Realistically, Chet might just end up being a role player his whole career. He doesn't have the competitive spirit to want to grow as a player, as demonstrated by his stats going down and efficiency also dropping since the start of the season, even though he was placed into a role that perfectly optimizes his chances to succeed and thrive on the court. Wembanyama came into the league with expectations to be the best player on his team, and the best rookie of the recent years. One thing I would mention about Wemby being the guy and ask to do more. That has recently started to happen. The 1st 24 games of the year was weird. Seemed like players did not like the Wemby hype, were not throwing him the ball. Pop was trying to avoid Wemby being the guy. Did not run plays for him or did he even make adjustments to get him involved. His teammates either just did not attempt to throw him the ball or could not get him accurate entry pass. You have seen all the Change in the last 10 games or so ago. Don’t forget his minute restriction. Chet usage rate was higher than Wemby. But in-spite of all this Wemby was still out performing Chet and it was not because Wemby was being asked to be the guy, taking more shots, being the focus point of the offense. He just maximized his chances and often times had to force it. Hence his splits the first 24 games vs the last 15 games. All in all. My unbiased opinion on Chet is he is playing really well better than most rookies in his position. Wemby is just on another level right now if he just stays consistent through February. He gets more open looks because those other three player takes away the defensive focus from him. Also, it helps that he has a MVP-caliber PG in Shai, and also an All-Star in-the-making with JDub who can find him in the right spots and set plays for him. Meanwhile, Wemby is playing without a PG or in this case, he’s the PG and he has to create most of his shots. All his shots are contested. No easy looks because the defensive focus is all on him as the first option. Opponents gameplan with him in mind, and all throughout the season, he’s always been double or triple-teamed everytime he touches the ball. Another thing about him is that the Spurs are also keeping him on a leash with that minute restriction that started since December. He seems to have the tools and the hoops IQ to be a generational Talent at the 5. A real stretch 5 with good defensive instincts and some Chutzpe. He also seems to understand his role and being a superstar at that role. Speaks to his general intelligence and character. But when you imagine Victor in that role on that team, the debate should be over. It's not even that close. Wembanyama has only one goal on this abysmal Spurs roster and that's learning/playing while staying healthy. And a character test of how to stay optimistic and positive while loosing all the time for no reason. He is the ROY and it isn't close. While Chet does what he’s is expected from him at an extremely high level the only metric he has over Wemby is his efficiency. And that lack of efficiency in Wemby is really entirely down to him being TRIPLE teamed and not having a point guard to get him open looks. If you take away everyone else and put these two on the same team Wemby is a proven monster one man army and Chet an efficient unicorn two way player. I'm like why would Chet try to 1v1 wemby even if he had something like a 70% chance of scoring on him when the Thunder had mismatches that they scored on like 80-90% chances. The past dozen games Pop has been running Tre Jones at PG and the Spurs have had much better results with that switch, and ever since that change Wemby has been averaging 26ppg on 27min and actually winning some games. This game Tre Jones was out on a sprained ankle, so our offense was a total wreck. On top of that we were completely outscored at the 3pt, having made like 2/12 or something in the first half. Put Tre Jones in that game, and if a few more of those threes go in, we couldve actually seen a close game maybe even a win. Wemby is head and shoulders above Chet and shows it in every aspect of the game. If Wemby was able to play on that okc team and defenses couldn’t just quadruple team him because SGA and Williams would be wide open Wemby would put up wilt chamberlain numbers on both ends. Both are considered super rookies at this point in their young careers, but if we are to look at the numbers, bruh... WEMBY is clearly a superior player and way better than CHET. WEMBY - 20.4 pts, 10.1 rebs, 2.9 assts, 3.2 blks, 1.1 steals CHET - 17.1 pts, 7.3 rebs, 2.8 assts, 2.6 blks, 0.6 steals These are the NBA's 5 major statistical categories and Wemby tops Chet 5 to nothing. The notion that Chet is better than Wemby because of Chet's "efficiency" and field goal percentage and Chet's Wins is purely nonsensical. It's like saying Rudy Gobert is better than Jokic and AD simply because Gobert's FG% is at a whopping 63.3% for the season while contributing a double-double with 13.3 pts and 12.5 rebs so he's having quite an "impact" to his T'Wolves team who currently sits atop the Western Conference. So, should we just then disregard Jokic's season ave of 26.2 pts, 12.0 rebs, 9.1 assts -- virtually a triple double -- while shooting "only" at 59.0%?? or AD's 25.0 pts, 12.2 rebs, 3.7 asst at "only" 55.8 FG%?!? Why? because, again, the argument for Gobert's is that he's much more efficient with his shot at 63.3% and his team is the Best in the West?! While Gobert's efforts are worthy of high praise, one cannot agree to this dumb idea that Gobert is better than Jokic and AD. Unfortunately, numbers dont lie. Same goes for Wemby and Chet. While Chet is indeed better in terms of efficiency, FG% and wins, Wemby is still the better player overall and the best Rookie (so far), and it's not even close! I mean, c'mon, look at Wemby's numbers again in pts, rebs, assts, blks and stls, all better than Chet's. Wemby is better offensively and defensively, that's on both ends of the court. He's also better with his playmaking and hustle plays, averaging a double-double and he even leads the league in blocks per game and total blocks made. That latter part alone should tilt towards Wemby's favor as that's the entire NBA we are talking about, whereas Chet, he rides only with SGA's brilliance night in and night out! He gets the wins but the Wins you see in the win column are not solely "Chet Wins" but OKC Wins, which should be attributed to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's MVP type of play for the entire season, who is averaging 31.1 pts and 6.4 assts and a league leading 2.3 stls. We should compare Chet and Wemby by what they've been doing individually and what they've achieved personally. Individual stats should matter in this particular case. Not team wins aided by some otherworldly teammates such as SGA, who is undisputedly the driving force behind OKC's wins! Can you imagine what happens if SGA is playing for San Antonio with Wemby? Or if Wemby and SGA are both playing for the same team in OKC? That would be totally unfair for the entire league. Instant title contenders!! Why? Because you are adding SGA's numbers at 31.1 pts, 6.4 assts and 2.3 steals with Wemby's 20.4 pts, 10.1 rebs, 2.9 assts, 3.2 blks and 1.1 steals. Wemby's ppg most likely will even go higher as double teaming him will be a bad idea as SGA will even have more space to operate. Now, if we are to imagine Chet becoming a Spur, his points per game may improve, but his rebs, asst, stls and blks per game would still be the same. Case in point, Chet played the same position in OKC since the very first game in Oct - at Center - but up to now, he still cant even crack double digits in rebounds, still averaging a measly 7.3 rebs per game. And Chet will now have Spurs teammates who would still suck at playing games, whether its offense or defense. Sochan, Vassell, Keldon, they're still going to be the same mediocre players who are very inconsistent and unreliable! But enough of this what-if's, what we should be taking a look at is the what-is. And what it is right now is that, Chet is a role player, 3rd best on his team. Role players, such as Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren, cannot be considered better than the team's star player - Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. No matter how great your role players are, and no matter the era they're in, they cannot be considered better than your superstar player. Same with Robert Horry, he is very essential to the Lakers team in the 2000s, but he's not the Shaq and/or Kobe of that team. Tyson Chandler cannot be considered a better player than Dirk Nowitzki in that championship team of 2011 (or any other year for that matter). Kendrick Perkins, while very crucial to Boston's success back in 2008, simply cannot be better than Kevin Garnett. Draymond Green, no matter how vital he is with the Dubs, cannot be considered better than Steph. Same with Rudy Gobert, he is not better than the top dogs of his team -- Anthony Edwards and KAT. Rudy Gobert, no matter how high his FG% is, no matter how high in the standings the Timberwolves are, no matter how many wins they gather at the top of the West, Rudy Gobert CANNOT be considered better than Jokic or AD. This is not a dig at Rudy but he is nothing more than a role player -- an excellent, crucial, significant, impactful role player. Chet is exactly like that, at least at this point in his career. He is just a role player who contributes immensely to his team's success. But he is not WEMBY. I am not saying Wemby is a superstar right now, but Wemby is the Spurs' main man, and depending on someone's perspective, a KID, who plays like a superstar, produces numbers like a superstar, leads his team in points, rebounds and blocks per game, and of course, double-doubles (like what David Robinson, Tim Duncan and SHAQ normally did in their MVP years) and Wemby gets treated by opposing teams like a true superstar as you can see all those double teams and triple teams that come his way whenever he gets the ball down low or in the mid range area. The ROY or ROTY award should be given to the best rookie as it obviously stands for ROOKIE OF THE YEAR. If we are handing out ROLE PLAYER OF THE YEAR award, then by all means, give that award to Chet because that's what he is right now -- an excellent, crucial, significant, impactful role player behind OKC's Thunder God Shai Gilgeous-Alexander! It is also important to note that, FG% is, actually just a minor stat. We look up to these superstar players such as Jordan, Lebron, Shaq, Duncan, Kobe, Curry, Giannis, Jokic, etc because of the spectacular numbers they produce in the NBA's 5 major statistical categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks in any given night. FG% is just indicative of how hot they are that night or how badly they shot at the rim, nothing more. As long as these players get to 80 pts, 70 pts, 60 pts, 50 pts or 40 pts or 30 pts, nobody cares how many shots it took them to get those points. We're just in awe of what they've done. Same with rebounds or blocks for the bigs, and assists and steals for the guards or wing players. The impact in the game is mostly reflected by these 5 major stat categories they produce each night. And of course, there are other factors to consider, like how great your teammates played that night, or how they totally sucked at it, and there's the coaching as well, not to mention the total minutes played, and/or the minutes restrictions, all of these contributes a lot on Winning and/or Losing the games you played in. But in terms of the head-to-head match up between Wemby and Chet, I gotta say that so far, WEMBY is undeniably a much better player than Chet right now as shown by his season averages. WEMBY leads Chet in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks per game ave, and for emphasis, even leads the league in blocks per game and total blocks made while playing less time on the court at only 28.5 mins per game as compared to Chet's 30.2 mins per game. Wemby is getting double-teamed and triple-teamed most of the time, he plays less mins, but still produces more than Chet. He is the story of his franchise while Chet is the 3rd option of his. OKC is SGA's team and SGA is the one name way up on the opponent's gameplan. Wemby also steps up to the plate when an opposing superstar comes to town and the lights shine brightest. The game he played against Giannis was him saying "I am the star of this rookie class" to me. Chet is a wonderful player, but he's just a piece. Wemby is San Antonio. They'll go as far as he goes one day while I'm not sure Chet will ever be the 1st option. Chet doesn’t back down from Wemby or anyone else and contests at the rim as well as any center ever has. His biggest advantage tho is his teams IQ and skill as he is free to play 1v1 against any team. The Thunder are really good. This team is a championship contending quality team. As of right now Chet is more developed and you can see his year in college and year injured in OKC has really helped his IQ. I like both players, and think they both deserve the respect of not being compared or forced into the same category. Victor Wembanyama is doing great things with very little to work with on his team. He is making great defensive plays despite being on one of the worst defenses in the NBA. He has more future potential than anyone in the NBA. He is the only reason anyone actually watches that team... Chet Holmgren is on the 100% opposite side of the NBA spectrum. His team is the #1 seed in the West and he is having to make game altering decisions when OKC is down 2 points in the last minute of a game against some of the best teams in the NBA. He is in a position where he has to decide between being confident in his own shot as a rookie, or getting the ball back to SGA or Jalen Williams to take that final shot. A shot that could determine if his team is a #1 seed or a #3 seed. You can't compare these two mindsets. One player has 3 defenders on him but can take any shot he wants because nobody cares if they lose 10 games in a row. The other has to defer to a legitimate MVP caliber player in games that control the standing of the NBA. Post expirement, Sohan's court vision has improved, and after watching him for a few games now, he is much more comfortable in the offense. While it might not have benefited Wemby directly, it did help Sochan, which indirectly helps Wemby in the long run. Is part of the math having a worse record to get a better draft pick? Yea... of course. Is that the only part of that equasion? I don't believe it is. Keep an eye on Blake Wesley moving forward also. He has been playing better from the point, getting his first start of the season last night. The jukes, the fade-outs, the v-cuts, the spin-outs, the backdoors, positioning in transition, with scoring opportunities covering every area under the 3-Pt line , and the overactivity of when he does these off-ball techniques are MJ-like. This also means he does a great job of helping his teammates to find him better (though it doesn't seem his teammates are taking advantage of it, he's literally doing the hard work for them and they still don't take the chance to pass him the ball); He can distribute his gravity to prevent their offense from stagnating and create more out-of-play scoring opportunities; He can also get more offensive rebounds and therefore more opportunities for second chance points; He doesn't need to control the offense through playmaking to help create scoring opportunities for others (I seriously hope he can get a good playmaker to compliment him); He doesn't need to go into isolation plays to score. Even when he does get the ball in isolation, he doesn't overextend his possession, he doesn't overdribble whenever he gets the ball, he doesn't wait for his defender to establish position against him, he just does something almost immediate whenever he gets the ball; Also a lot of catch-and-shoot opportunities for him; It still blows my mind how a 7'4" guy can even do those off-ball moves at all. I don't think anyone his size is supposed to move like him. Although being 7'4" I'm pretty sure he's going to f'ck up his knees earlier than MJ did as skillful and as active playing off-ball like this. But at least we now know even if his team is losing, he actually sacrifices his knees to get a bucket AND help prevent the team's offense from pausing. His off-ball skillset will be critical if he ever gets the chance to play for a championship. Defens, ofens, leadership, with all this natural body gifts. And than the situation he landed in... getting Pop to bring you in the league with all them old spurs mentor players he loved seeing as a kid. He is fascinating to watch. This is what happens when you get a Russell/Wilt/Kareem level big man who comes up in the modern era. Some of his defensive highlights really do remind me of a young Wilt - that preposterous length and perfect timing just erasing opponents' shots. His motor is great as well. He plays HARD. He moves without the ball, loves setting screens, and runs the floor like a wing. I wish his teammates would reward him more often for running the floor like that; most big men don't. Offensively, I've noticed that he has picked up a quasi-hook, quasi-push shot with either hand from the low to mid block...at his height, modern Kareem definitely comes to mind. His ceiling is Rushmore. Plain and simple. No idea whether he'll make it, but he seems to have a head on his shoulders and the tools are more than there. I would say that injury is the big issue to look out for. It will definitely be fun to watch him develop. The teams identity is passing. If you had said "don't have great court vision" That would have made more sense. Also Zach was not "shelved" he got hurt. Vic was moved to the 5 before Collins injury. The reason for his numbers explosion was specifically because of the minute restriction he was on. Vics biggest flaw in his game is his stamina. While he was on his minutes restriction he played like a legit all-nba caliber player. But it's hard to tell if he has truly figured out that he does better when he's in the paint instead of jacking up threes and fadeaway Js. He still takes and mostly misses lots of those shots every game. What he needs to do is get in the paint, hold his ground, catch the ball, and learn a couple of moves while attacking. Simply getting a dunk off a fast break or pick-and-roll maybe four times in an entire game is not enough to worry opponents. He should not be pulling up for 3 as often as he does, and needs to get on the low block in transition. I understand why he's hesitant to do so though because opposing centers and forwards manhandle him down there off-ball. He has a negative differential this year and most of it attributed to turnovers and poor shot selection. His personal stats will be astronomical but that does not mean it's winning basketball despite what casual fans will argue in the comments. There are countless examples of players with great stats that don't produce winning basketball especially in a 7game playoff format where teams get multiple shots to figure you out in succession. If you can't think of any let me know and I'll help you figure it out He has not arrived yet, and for what it's worth has not lived up to the hype yet. The team is performing worse after adding him to the roster - you would ideally like to see him tip the scales in the other direction. More, its concerning to me that he's already on a minutes restriction and he's only 20 years old. I think that's probably the reality of his career will be great personal stats, limited playtime, and nagging injuries because of his unnaturally lanky body. He's having to choose whether he wants to stay skinny and become the next KD (but his shooting doesn't support that), or become bigger and risk injury from the massive leverage his body puts on his limbs. I think getting as much experience as possible from him is still good for him but I wish he would’ve come in right after Duncan retired or even played one year with him sorta how luka did with the mavs. Because this dude has all the tools to be the best player for the spurs all time even beating tim Duncan’s career. Duncan was fortunate because he came in to a really good team and got to play with the admiral David Robinson. So he immediately got playoff experience from the get go even winning a title in just his second season. Anyone who’s played in competitive anything that involves a regular season and playoffs knows the difference between a real game and practice is monumental everyone knows that but going from a regular season game to a playoff game is also a big leap in difference. So I have a feeling unless they make some moves and get the right pieces he’s going to progress just a tad bit slower but then again Tatum went to 7 with Lebron with a rookie and doesn’t seem to of make that big of a difference getting that early playoff xp. Duncan’s start is gonna be hard to beat he was rookie of the year and scored 21 a game and also led them to the 2nd round where as wemby isn’t gonna make the playoffs or make the allstar game and while he does have a good chance to get roty but Chet is right there with him and the fact that Chet is the second best player on 2nd ranked team in the west gives him a lot of credit. All I’m saying is if the coaching goes smoothly and he really likes pop and his current system and they get along wonderfully then even with only decent roster moves they should be able to make the playoffs even by next year. I believe if the right team comes together that wemby could have an even greater spurs career than tim Duncan I know he’s going to pass him statistically but that’s what made Timmy so great is he impacted the game with every aspect of his being. I think wemby is more talented and gifted even more physically than Duncan was. I’m also very interested to see if he is one of the guys that comes in skinny and puts muscle on quick like your Giannis and lebrons or is he gonna remain the size he is sorta how KD and them did. The NBA heads are more forgiving than baseball: a 3.2 VORP (Value Over Replacement) is considered the MINIMUM for All-Star quality. In easily over half the season, Wemby is at 1.4. A video can be made about how rookies dominate much LESS this century: this shows how much more competitive the NBA is, + how when younger it is harder to dominate. Wemby IS making progress-but IF it was so dramatic, he would be among the best players in the NBA already-& that is not remotely approaching the outside of Reality. His Win Shares are ALSO 1.4: Joker & SGA are already over 10. right now the best comparison to his accomplishments in his first year may be LeBron. Who ALSO was short of All-Star standard quality then: BUT WAS MUCH BETTER JUST THE NEXT YEAR! Wemby's numbers are close to LeBron-except less Win Shares & value limited by dramatically fewer minutes (which is not his fault). In his sophomore year, James was at 14.3 Win Shares: & a massive 9.1 VORP. IF #Wemby can get to say at least 75% of those numbers, THEN you can say he is progressing quickly in accords with a truly Great player.
