I absolutely love the way he appreciates music, understands the music and the composer. His sense of humour and passion are unmatched. He can have fun while playing accurately and that is amazing. So much hard work has been put in to achieve this standard and it really shows, also how much Ray cares for the music. 1.6K Reply 19 replies @elenakunadis2888 5 months ago I will never understand how violinists memorize a 30 minute concert without ever missing a note, or losing focus 😂😂😂 46 Reply 2 replies @Casper_Cassie 6 years ago Can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that we can all watch such an amazing performance for free at home in such high quality anytime we like? 30, heck even as close as 20 years ago this is the kind of thing only the upper classes could have had even semi-regular access to. Thank god for youtube and modern technology. 813 Reply 11 replies @addisondurrence1431 6 years ago Ray Chen: Good playing: ✔️ Handsome: ️ Technique: ️ Speed: ️ Facial Expressions: ️(definitely) 3.7K Reply 73 replies @irisce2799 2 years ago Ray's Mendelssohn is honestly king. I don't think anyone plays it better than him. Mendelssohn VC requires the perfect balance of just playing in a way that sounds nice and not tilting too far in any direction which many soloists with strong playing styles tend to impart on their interpretations. Ray's performance is just a service to the music and delivers each note and phrase in the Goldilocks zone, the ideal interpretation. 71 Reply 3 replies @jancowell 7 years ago Almost as good as Ling ling 7.3K Reply 109 replies @rogert5854 7 years ago Mr. Chen, I have listened to this piece many times. I must admit that it is usually when i am cleaning this house. It gets me moving faster but today I stopped and watch at times. I must extend you wonderful compliments because you really are enjoying yourself and your face elicits some much expression. And this time I saw a brief smile between you and the conductor. Thank you for sharing this gift of music with a large audience. I hope you come and play here in Austin, Texas one day. I would enjoy seeing you in person. Peace to you always :) 2K Reply 11 replies @eddominates 1 year ago Some soloists just make it look easy. Ray shows you exactly how difficult it is, and shows his appreciation for the difficulty at the same time, all while making it look easy. It's a really refreshing style. Shows passion both for the piece and for the genius involved in its creation. 115 Reply 1 reply @Michael-mg4tx 5 years ago Everyone has their favorite violinist’s version of this classic. At times when the orchestra has more of an important melody, Ray is watching Maestro Nagano, while when Ray has a more important solo part which requires him to take some liberty with how it's played/rhythm, Maestro Nagano is watching him. I don't think soloists are usually concerned about conductors this much. 678 Reply 6 replies @alwaysLurking 2 years ago I love the emotion Ray puts into his playing. They are superb violinists. It is quite a pleasant change to see a young male violinist of this high standard here. My first exposure of this concerto was back in the 60's when I was a teenager. Yes, it was a recording of Jascha Heifetz. Much later on YouTube, I like Sarah Chang's performance with Maestro Kurt Masur in New York when she was 15 years of age. Both played the concerto in straight adherence to the tempo as indicated in the music. Mr. Chen plays some passages in the first movement in somewhat slower tempo. It is not till the 3rd movement that he plays Allegro throughout. Maybe I am old style, I like it that way. 77 Reply 1 reply @lawrencegroves8307 6 years ago 9:27 start of accelerando is the best part in my humble opinion. 39 Reply @nordy15 7 months ago That bassoon note at 13:51 is genius. 3 Reply 2 replies @irisce2799 5 years ago 26:04 the most beautiful part of the concerto 21 Reply @purvadhanashreecotah5163 6 years ago Ray chen constantly making constipated faces is genuinely becoming my new favourite thing to watch. 75 Reply @Наталья-р2ф2р 1 month ago What I love about Ray's style of playing is that he treats notes as being pearls, pearls of various sizes yet equal in significance,,,such a special artistic approach, at least that is the way I feel..❤🎉 1 Reply @jessicabui6114 5 years ago Just discovering this today and this is the best version I've heard. I can't even tell when Ray is bowing, it's perfectly fluid and silky. Wow!! 148 Reply 3 replies @stew148 6 years ago (edited) Ray Chen has given me inspiration. I played violin before I knew of Ray Chen and I was never about to quit, however, Ray Chen has given me the inspiration to push myself and to see how I play violin from a completely different perspective. He has shown me how to connect with the music and the composer and that when you play, you’re not just playing notes on a page; you are expressing the emotions of the composer. And to be able to do that, you must feel that same emotion. Ray Chen shows this in his playing. The way he plays, not only can you tell that he feels the emotions of the composer, but he also makes the audience feel it too. That is inspirational and that is why I aspire to become a professional violinist when I graduate high school; so that I can help others see this too. 54 Reply @vanessakatharina1442 1 year ago I don't listen such a classic music very often but every time I do, I am crying and the dynamic let me feel like nothing is more important than having emotions and let them be... They had some game and I won a year of free concerts - i went home and pretended to play the violin on everything haha. I eventually got to start taking violin lessons, it lasted for maybe two years - then life came in between (I had severe panic attacks and a phobia with PTSD), but now - in my 30s I was gifted a violin from a stranger at a christian camp meeting this summer and have played for almost every day since then!! I LOVE IT! <3 And Im so thankful for your way of teaching and sharing some of your incredible insights and musical skills; I loved your video on the vibrato (which Im currently trying to learn). Thank you for posting this. What a marvelous performance. There are some pieces that you fall in love with in childhood which you grow out of and there are others, like this, which you never tire of. I first got to know it as a geeky, music-mad kid. My mum had some records which very occasionally she would let me listen to. Her version was played by someone called Mischa Elman. (For years I thought the cover photo of the striking redhead wearing a black frock and holding the violin was the person actually playing on the disc...). Not sure what I loved about it more - the youthful, passionate joy of the piece or the rich yet sweet sound of the soloist. Somehow the two things became inseparable in my mind and now half a century later your playing has brought all that back to me. You have a wonderful, communicative gift and I wish you every success. Today you made me very happy. Thanks Richard 24 Reply @timothychinye6008 12 days ago I don't get how someone could do this for 30 minutes straight. He makes every phrase musical and it says something with charachter . His triplets in the beginning made more sense than I ever heard anyone before make with them and he can actually color his tone with bow speed not just vibrato . Remarkable musician :more than just a violinist . I want to hear his Sibelius , Bartok 2 . Has he rcorded the Shostakovich a minor or Neilsen ? Don't know if you're still here seeing comments after all this time, but I have to say you make me cry tears of joy every single time I watch this video — my absolute favourite piece of music ever composed, played in a way that puts my former benchmark (Heifetz) almost to shame. We just snagged tickets to see the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra perform it here this spring. That will have to hold me until Maestro Tausk arranges for you to come here to perform it with the Vancouver Symphony. Let me know if you need an in with that, as we live literally upstairs from their home, the Orpheum Theatre, and we're happy to see what we can do to get them to get off their butts and call you, even if it means tossing notes out our window! 5 Reply @oliversang5155 1 month ago As a cello student, I have to say this is the best violin piece I’ve heard. Heard it, and it was like, where have you been all my life. Well done. 7 Reply @lily_wonka 2 years ago This piece was dedicated to Mendelssohn’s good friend, Ferdinand David. Although this piece conceived in 1838, the work took another six years to complete and was not premiered until 1845. Meanwhile, David gave Mendelssohn some suggestions. The piece itself was one of the best violin concertos of the Romantic era and was influential on many other composers. The concerto consists of three movements in a standard fast–slow–fast structure that was a more traditional form during that time. The three movements are melodically and harmonically connected and played. I also really like the beginning melody and the transitions, also the orchestra that acompanys this player. This player is a very good person on emotions and dynamics. He is just good at everything in general. 4 Reply @valeriecb3771 7 months ago Magnifique ! Une pure merveille. Merci Ray Chen . This piece is, if I am allowed to speak commercially, hard to sell not so much because of technical difficulty, but because it's ubiquity - so many musicians presented their version and public is not easy to be impressed. Still Mr Chen resisted the usual contemporary instinct to break rules and respected the composer and piece itself. He played with clear and very pleasant sound. Maybe some tiny imperfections, like very small rush at 10:20 could be improved, but generally he gave us fine musical performanse and enjoyment. 4 Reply @geoffdawsonstudio 10 years ago Awesome playing Ray, you really make it sing! 4 Reply @415coloredmylife9 3 years ago (edited) 10:24 - 11:45 is my favourite part of the concerto❤️ 3 Reply @Carbonated_Clara 1 year ago Learning this piece right now! It was easy for me to slightly dismiss him, because he does photo shoots, puts in a lot of effort to look good (a crime lol), but you need that to be successful these days, and behind all the showmanship and being a celebrity, he's a really great violinist, with fresh, sensitive interpretations. 1 Reply @Esterina550. 1 year ago Sublime!!!!!!!
