if you can play something slowly you can
0:01
play it
0:04
quickly
0:07
[Music]
0:10
M that was faster wasn't
0:13
it when it comes to music is playing
0:16
faster better well this violinist
0:17
apparently thinks so I first heard of
0:19
Ben Lee from my friends Brett and Eddie
0:20
a few years ago and apparently they had
0:22
some pretty strong comments to say about
0:24
his playing so today I'm going to see
0:26
just how fast the playing is and then
0:28
I'm going to attempt it myself to see if
0:30
I can play it faster or better first
0:32
let's take a look at the original BBC
0:34
what gave you the idea of playing it
0:36
fast well I was knocked off in a bike
0:38
accident cycling around London about
0:40
four years ago I really hurt my wrist my
0:43
bandmate in the band fuse said uh Ben
0:46
why don't you see this as a target of
0:48
Rehabilitation why don't you go for this
0:49
Guinness World Record it been set and I
0:52
aim to break it I feel like if you
0:54
injure yourself it's probably not a good
0:57
idea to try and go all the way into into
1:00
doing something so ridiculous this is
1:02
maybe the same as like breaking your leg
1:03
and still climbing Everest it's a
1:05
strange goal to set for yourself I have
1:07
to say there's a few bars of at normal
1:13
Pace the clarity is not really there
1:17
even with the normal Tempo now that
1:20
looks pretty fast to me anyway now you
1:23
upped it a bit absolutely we practice if
1:25
you can play something slowly you can
1:26
play it quickly this is the famous line
1:28
if you can play something slowly you can
1:30
play it quickly I have no comment so I
1:33
played it very slowly and then I got it
1:35
a little
1:36
quicker bit
1:38
faster and eventually I got to 15 notes
1:41
a
1:42
[Laughter]
1:44
second 15 notes a
1:47
second here right
1:49
here I have to say that this is not
1:51
clear at all presumably you could do
1:53
that with any piece that you
1:56
chose it's true you could totally trash
1:59
any piece that you want to right by just
2:01
playing it super fast I'm going to do
2:02
this for oh yeah
2:07
mendleson you know you could just do
2:09
that you know and become the fastest
2:10
mson player in the world kind of almost
2:12
sacriligious that it's a slow piece it
2:14
should never be played at speed well I
2:16
think Paganini was one of the first
2:18
violin rock stars I love how he's just
2:20
like yeah I'm going to Swagger and his
2:23
music like Flight of the Bumblebee is
2:25
full of quick notes that are continuous
2:27
flat of the Bumblebee has 8810 notes
2:30
that are semiquavers you have to play
2:32
Four per click for the Guinness World
2:34
Record and like that to be able to play
2:36
810 notes in under a minute you could do
2:39
the same with Paganini something like
2:40
Moto perpetua which means always
2:47
moving this piece that he's taking at
2:49
this blinding speed let's just take a
2:51
dump on any sort of piece we want
2:54
actually I'm going to do this uh for the
2:56
[Music]
2:57
mental oh my gosh
3:01
that kind of thing do classical
3:04
violinists and you know I I was told
3:07
when we were doing this piece that you
3:08
there was this incredibly valuable
3:09
violin it is incredibly Val valuable
3:12
violin but it's not what I kind of
3:13
expected I expected some you know 18
3:15
century Italian Masterpiece to be coming
3:17
into the studio and you've got a very
3:19
violin there I just wonder whether sort
3:20
of classical musicians think that his
3:22
violin is it's very shiny I've played
3:24
electric violin look it's just his his
3:27
choices it's his choices that he's made
3:30
in his life from everything up until
3:32
this moment he he he had no idea what
3:34
was coming to him after this I don't
3:36
think you any criticism no well we have
3:38
a lot of uh we have a lot of discussions
3:40
with people uh what we aim to do with
3:42
fuse is to inspire people and introduce
3:45
them to lots of different styles of
3:47
playing the vi yeah I guess it has
3:49
inspired people not to think of music as
3:52
only being played fast you can play it
3:55
very uh percussively like um go give us
3:58
a go
4:01
you can make it sound
4:06
romantic can play it
4:15
Jazzy so there's lots you can do with a
4:17
violin you take a violin like this you
4:19
take a violin like this yeah I've seen
4:21
the comments too where was this wow some
4:23
of these comments beneath this video are
4:25
also pretty extreme if you can ruin your
4:28
whole career slowly you can ruin it
4:31
quickly $15 million is it this one and
4:34
you got another and you got another one
4:35
that's worth 2
4:38
million oh my
4:40
God that's $1.5 million what I didn't
4:44
know that but isn't worth 10
4:47
million that's really expensive for an
4:49
electric violin it doesn't even sound
4:51
that good electric violin in
4:52
collaboration with the jewela theopen so
4:54
you're a violinist and you're bling as
4:56
well absolutely why not do you still
4:59
keep the musical kind of Integrity if
5:01
you're playing at Great speed great
5:04
question you do fight to the Bumblebee
5:06
is a fun piece of music there is I think
5:09
that is the musical Integrity is to have
5:11
fun and to wow people with it yeah and
5:14
so and so of other interviewers just
5:16
like struggling as well to keep his
5:19
composure to take this seriously ah
5:22
there's a wonderful violinist called
5:23
David Garrett who said it back in 2008
5:26
at 1 minute and uh 6 seconds 66 seconds
5:29
if you like the challenge was to take it
5:32
in under a minute can we do that well
5:34
I'm the first person I've seen that
5:36
video of David uh Garrett playing the
5:38
Flight of the
5:40
Bumblebee it is very clear hold on a
5:43
second I'm just going to set my watch if
5:44
I say go will you go absolutely
5:49
okay
5:52
[Music]
5:56
go for a second there I thought there
5:58
was distortion it was just like that for
6:00
a
6:02
second this is what this sounds like to
6:05
[Music]
6:15
[Music]
6:16
me I've never seen such dedication to
6:20
playing so so offensively that requires
6:23
[Music]
6:26
dedication his little like
6:30
I think he lost a few valuable seconds
6:33
in his record he should have just played
6:35
those instead of pitching them like why
6:37
not just
6:40
like you're already destroying the piece
6:42
just take the shortcut do
6:48
[Music]
6:58
it
7:01
[Music]
7:06
terrible I had purposely not watched
7:09
this video back then because there was a
7:11
lot of negativity around it and I I
7:13
don't think that I need that in my life
7:15
but watching it now even so far removed
7:17
it's pretty
7:19
disappointing because music is meant to
7:20
be enjoyed by both the player in the
7:22
audience and I don't think that he's
7:23
really enjoying it obviously audiences
7:25
have not either I think to me that
7:28
speaks of years of P up frustration in
7:31
terms of his path of being a musician
7:33
but there's definitely so many better
7:35
ways of doing this had he been
7:37
practicing daily I think in front of
7:39
people who could have given him feedback
7:41
and he could have saved himself from the
7:42
public humiliation honestly if Ben had
7:45
tonic which is this app where you can
7:47
come together and form this community
7:50
you can get feedback from others you can
7:52
play practice together musicians of all
7:54
levels by the way this would have been
7:56
so much better so definitely check out
7:58
tonic the link is in the description
8:00
below and enjoy it to start practicing
8:02
with
8:05
others okay so before we dive into
8:08
attempting this I just want to caveat
8:10
and tell you guys that it's okay to play
8:12
fast I mean certain pieces require a
8:14
certain fast tempo but there is a way to
8:17
do this and then there's also a limit
8:20
and you should always scale back 2%
8:22
before you reach your limit okay with
8:24
this particular piece we're going to use
8:25
fly of the Bumblebee as an example I
8:27
have my metronome so we're going to
8:28
start 160 let's
8:30
say that's obviously very very slow
8:33
we're going to raise it up to 200
8:40
now and this is when I would start to
8:43
recommend you to do macro beats so
8:46
basically dividing the uh Tempo in half
8:48
so instead of going to 220 you would do
8:55
110 like that but let's let's just scale
8:58
it back a little bit so we get to play
9:00
at the
9:05
200 so that's already starting to
9:07
honestly feel like it's at a max speed
9:10
but I know for the sake of this video we
9:13
want to push it further just to see so
9:14
we're going to push it up to
9:22
108 and we're going to make sure that
9:25
the spato becomes shorter so we're
9:28
sacrificing a lot of articulation right
9:30
now so that we have a smaller bounce and
9:33
we're going to stay closer to the
9:35
string instead
9:37
of I'm going to push it up to 115
9:40
because at this Tempo when you sacrifice
9:42
the articulation a lot can be
9:44
[Music]
9:47
done we're starting to leave musicality
9:51
behind for the sake of only one thing
9:53
speed let's go and push it up a little
9:55
bit further to
9:58
120
10:05
ah am I proud of myself not really but
10:07
you know what let's push the speed a
10:09
little faster
10:13
[Music]
10:21
245 I just don't think this is healthy
10:23
why are we doing this let me hear
10:27
him yes so he's actually cutting Corners
10:30
we were struggling because we were
10:32
trying to stay true to the Beats but if
10:34
we do it Ben Lee style this is what it
10:35
would sound
10:38
[Music]
10:40
like actually he should have done them
10:47
[Music]
10:55
[Music]
10:56
slurred there we go that was F faster
10:59
wasn't it it goes to show that there's
11:02
no limit to
11:04
stupidity emotional damage well I think
11:08
this is like the harshest video I've
11:10
ever done anyway let me know what you
11:12
think in the comments below and if you'd
11:13
like to see me do more insane violin
11:15
challenges but properly go check out my
11:17
practice Challenge videos where I take
11:19
on everything from Paganini violin conto
11:22
to the Cenas as well and I'll see you in

the next video thanks for watching

From what I've seen on his Instagram ( I found it somehow XD) he has now moved on from the "fastest violinist" phase and is now a producer who writes music for video games and stuff. He also joked about the embarrassing past and has the "if you can play it slowly you can play it quickly" merch. I swear this dude has one best redemption arcs E V E R

You definitely play it faster and more precisely but in such a way as to show us that speed isn’t everything (which we knew but it is good to have confirmation). Thanks for articulating the frustration we all feel over the original video.

Ben Lee's interpretation should be called Flight of the Mosquito, because his electric violin massacring the piece sounds exactly like a mosquito that wants to bite you when you are trying to fall asleep.

Oooooh I think I saw an interview at some point where an interviewer commented on Ben Lee and asked how David felt having his record broken. His response was something along the lines of "It's okay, because I know I played every note". LOL

The final result is ridiculous in the best way. If the talent show guy does some sort of uneasy dying mosquito noise, the slurred version from Chen is so perfect that it actually sounds like a real insect flying, and it is also BEAUTIFUL.

I don't play any instrument and even I think it sounds bad. On another note, if you're reading this Ray, I would love for you to do a video on violin in folk music (fiddle) like irish music for example, where it's played quite fast but usually sounds amazing! I'd love to hear a professional's review/take on it!

It's a great example of how caught up in things people can get, and it can drive them to the point of absurdity, becoming ridicule-worthy. It's always healthy to take a step back, welcome a little healthy criticism, get an outside perspective and have a laugh at ourselves. Do what makes you happy! But try to not get obsessed with numbers or competition. Bring it all back home and down to Earth now and then.
Also, good luck with improving Tonic! I tried it, but it always just lagged, crashed and there were no features. If it just had some stability and quality of life like a built-in instrument tuner, I could justify using it still.

I played the violin in a band for a while and was used to being asked to play flight of the Bumblebee. My usual response was that I would do them a bigger favour by not playing it at all. This guy is proof of that opinion.

I’m not one to make comments on one’s personality or skills, but imagine a tiny shack with a big tv inside that shows a picture of a mansion, then a ton of diamonds glued to the shack. That’s Ben Lee’s violin. What type of person would want a violin like that? I know who.

I want you to please see a video from Caroline Campbell! She's amazing and plays along Andrea Bocelli. She is really virtuoso and plays really well - of course, Hilary Hahn is all my life favorite but I do enjoy Caroline Campbell as well... hehee and new violinists today like Esther Abrami, Anastasiia Mazurok, Anastasia Petryshak, Chloe Trevor, Mairead Nesbitt (Celtic Woman fiddle), Rusanda Panfili (Hans Zimmer's violinist), etc... they are amazing and tour a lot...
I tried to learn some violin - I'm a pianist/keyboardist but violin is hard hhaaha intonation sucks! lol

with super technical guitarists we call it the Gilmore effect. Every time super fast guitarists are brought up, there's always someone who brings up David Gilmore because his playing is very expressive rather than very fast. It happens so often it got its own name. Maybe violinists now have the Ben Lee effect!

I play guitar and I can play 17 notes per sec but only in 1 key Emin, and only employing an open low E, hammering on two notes on the same string, then sweeping through the Emin arpeggio, hammering on the high E string, tapping the 4th octave high E then going back down through the entire sequence. I can only do this in one key because of how the guitar is tuned. I can't do this speed by simply picking the notes out.

At first, I thought you were going to criticize the BBC rather than the player, because there are countless musicians who believe they play well. However, a channel like the BBC is undermining its own credibility & humiliating it self by airing such a show. I can assure you that if any other local TV channel in the world broadcasted this, you wouldn't be concerned. The BBC, being an established and reputable TV channel, should already have such experts on hand. I’m just back from singing, where a number of people got into a lot of trouble for a lack of clarity within their notes. I see, they are clearly not alone.
But without joking - I had this running in the background as I was sorting dinner and thought Ray had had a fit, when I heard the playing. 😅

controversial take here: i think that famous line was a mistake. anyone who has played ANY instrument seriously would know that's a complete lie. so there's no way he just said that on live TV to millions of people, with a straight face, 100% sincere. i think it's likely he made a misspoke, he chose to cover it up since it didn't contradict his example.

Funny video about a super ridiculous topic. May I sarcastically suggest starting at ten times normal speed while using only one finger and then gradually slowing that down to pristine levels of remarkable clarity? 🙄
PS) There is a fundamental difference between artistic and Olympic endeavors, BTW. Capiche?!
PS2) I would have enjoyed his record attempt far more if he had dressed up as a Neanderthal with a bone in his mouth among other things… He could make it big on Am Got Talent with a few absurd tweeks?
PS3) Do folks even realize that humans aren’t bumblebees? Sheesh!

This video confirms again why I never wanted to become a classical musician. The way I have seen classical musicians treat other musicians is just terrible. Most musicians(like me) are definitely not the best, but just love what we do, and other people see that, enjoy our music, and hire us. I find it hilarious, that orchestras that classical musicians bust their asses from the age of 2 to get into, cant even make enough in ticket sales to pay their own musicians. So, they have to beg for money from generous donors in order to keep their doors open. Its true! Meanwhile, less "talented" musicians play more popular styles of music and easily make 6 figures a year playing for weddings and other private events. Perhaps this animosity towards other musicians is just bitterness that comes from an antiquated system that is no longer as popular? I would say so.

I really think twoset has a lot to answer for with the cruelty and mocking that has been hurled at Ben. He's a human being and at the end of the day doesn't deserve it. Twoset have made a lot of money off it through branding and merchandise. I can only imagine the impact that this has had on Ben for all these years. To see Ray capitalise off this is very disappointing. Like - what is the point of this video really? To mock Ben further? Why? Did it really need to be made? What are you achieving by doing that other than getting a few easy cheap laughs? Do better Ray. There's no need to be a jerk.

Why waste your time criticizing the obvious? You will end up professionally like the set of criticism they criticize but they don’t play actually good enough. If a person wants to be the best on their music profession on the classical music go spend time actually doing better and not patronizing the others. Why Garret won’t do what you guys are doing? His goal it’s fulfilling on the real deal.
As a “Professional” violinist you should do better than post videos criticizing others.
Teach them how to do better & you will be the best violinist.

That violin guy is playing the Bumblebee song as if he was a woke violinist to the audience that is quite unacceptable. Violinists are mainly conservative players who kept their freedom of music expression well balanced and disciplined, not liberals. Left will always flat and right will always be sharp. Facts do care about feelings in the MusicWorld, and success is to believe in your wild practice. Studying both violin and laws at the moment ... but Ray Chen, keep musical commenting and playing.

The arrogance, where everyone thinks they know it all and are above others. Constant mockery and derision. If you have no valuable content without demeaning others, you should simply refrain from publishing such material.
