Mr. Chen, I have listened to this piece many times. I must admit that it is usually when i am cleaning this house. It gets me moving faster but today I stopped and watch at times. I must extend you wonderful compliments because you really are enjoying yourself and your face elicits some much expression. And this time I saw a brief smile between you and the conductor. Thank you for sharing this gift of music with a large audience. I hope you come and play here in Austin, Texas one day. I would enjoy seeing you in person. Peace to you always :)

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that we can all watch such an amazing performance for free at home in such high quality anytime we like? 30, heck even as close as 20 years ago this is the kind of thing only the upper classes could have had even semi-regular access to. Thank god for youtube and modern technology.

In my opinion, Ray Chen is one of the most talented, expressionistic and passionate players of our generation, if not the most. I absolutely love the way he appreciates music, understands the music and the composer. His sense of humour and passion are unmatched. He can have fun while playing accurately and that is amazing. So much hard work has been put in to achieve this standard and it really shows, also how much Ray cares for the music.

Why is everyone obsessed with Ling Ling in a Ray Chen performance. ? Here even Ling Ling listens and enjoys the music instead of practicing 40 hours a day.

Really interesting how it seems like they've planned out who's following whom when. At times when the orchestra has more of an important melody, Ray is watching Maestro Nagano, while when Ray has a more important solo part which requires him to take some liberty with how it's played/rhythm, Maestro Nagano is watching him. I don't think soloists are usually concerned about conductors this much.

Some soloists just make it look easy. Ray shows you exactly how difficult it is, and shows his appreciation for the difficulty at the same time, all while making it look easy. It's a really refreshing style. Shows passion both for the piece and for the genius involved in its creation.

Ray's Mendelssohn is honestly king. I don't think anyone plays it better than him. Mendelssohn VC requires the perfect balance of just playing in a way that sounds nice and not tilting too far in any direction which many soloists with strong playing styles tend to impart on their interpretations. Ray's performance is just a service to the music and delivers each note and phrase in the Goldilocks zone, the ideal interpretation.

We use to see mostly Korean and Japanese young lady violin soloists on YouTube. They are superb violinists. It is quite a pleasant change to see a young male violinist of this high standard here. My first exposure of this concerto was back in the 60's when I was a teenager. Yes, it was a recording of Jascha Heifetz. Much later on YouTube, I like Sarah Chang's performance with Maestro Kurt Masur in New York when she was 15 years of age. Both played the concerto in straight adherence to the tempo as indicated in the music. Mr. Chen plays some passages in the first movement in somewhat slower tempo. It is not till the 3rd movement that he plays Allegro throughout. Maybe I am old style, I like it that way.

Ray Chen has given me inspiration. I played violin before I knew of Ray Chen and I was never about to quit, however, Ray Chen has given me the inspiration to push myself and to see how I play violin from a completely different perspective. He has shown me how to connect with the music and the composer and that when you play, you’re not just playing notes on a page; you are expressing the emotions of the composer. And to be able to do that, you must feel that same emotion. Ray Chen shows this in his playing. The way he plays, not only can you tell that he feels the emotions of the composer, but he also makes the audience feel it too. That is inspirational and that is why I aspire to become a professional violinist when I graduate high school; so that I can help others see this too.

Anybody else noticed cellos and double basses on the left side together with soloist a concertmaster and 1st violins and the rest strings on the right side ? It is very clever detail as many conductors in tradition orchestra displacement can't hear soloist and orchestra clearly enough :) Very compact sound. Happy cello players. I think everybody enjoyed it.

breathtaking. There are people playing there instrument, there are people playing there instrument and making music, there are people who play there instrument, make music and feel the music they play - and there are people who seem to BE there instrument and BE the music, BE the composer, BE the sounds and put the whole world in every note they are/ they play! You are one of the last ones, clearly! thx 4 sharing for the tears of joy while listening to the results of your practise!

When it changes mood at 23 minutes_ bliss, sheer bliss. It apparently took Mendelssohn several years to write this. He kept going back to in order to perfect it in between other compositions. A true genius. Up there with Mozart,Haydn and Bach.

I came back in May 2022.The opening is full of subtlety/The theme repeats often enough so you let it just present itself at beginning but his shading and phrasing is top=notch. His bowing technique is incredible !He's popular for goodreasons!!!Chen 's face is everywhere but I hadn't heard him till just now . He makes every phrase musical and it says something with charachter . His triplets in the beginning made more sense than I ever heard anyone before make with them and he can actually color his tone with bow speed not just vibrato . Remarkable musician :more than just a violinist . I want to hear his Sibelius , Bartok 2 . Has he rcorded the Shostakovich a minor or Neilsen ? He's so good looking and the playing speaks if he plays either of the Prokofiev concerti Iknow I will dream and cry ! Wonderful music -making here !

the DON shines in those difficult and complicated pieces of classical music, not in the easy ones, coincidentally that is what having the GIFT is all about, power with any master of music. It's always a challenge to get a master to touch that not all of his colleagues can. You can tell that he carries classical music in his soul and that his work also demonstrates his effort and dedication full time. GREETINGS FROM ARGENTINA.

I think that 9:27 part is a mesmerizing flow to the dramatic main theme. It is just marvellous how it shifts to the darkness, and after the darkness arises a peaceful and glorious seed of new beginning. The calm serenity at the end of the horrible atmosphere. Eventually it gets a little more intense and you get flashbacks from the atriocities and things turn anxious yet again. The perpetual suffering faces new aspects.

Hi Ray.
Thank you for posting this. What a marvelous performance.
There are some pieces that you fall in love with in childhood which you grow out of and there are others, like this, which you never tire of.
I first got to know it as a geeky, music-mad kid. My mum had some records which very occasionally she would let me listen to. Her version was played by someone called Mischa Elman. (For years I thought the cover photo of the striking redhead wearing a black frock and holding the violin was the person actually playing on the disc...). Not sure what I loved about it more - the youthful, passionate joy of the piece or the rich yet sweet sound of the soloist. Somehow the two things became inseparable in my mind and now half a century later your playing has brought all that back to me. You have a wonderful, communicative gift and I wish you every success. Today you made me very happy.
Thanks
Richard

I love that you respect the tempo of the orchestra. So many recordings feel like the soloist and the conductor have totally diff views on how fast the piece should be or want to use a tone of rubato. This is a perfect handoff that keeps the momentum going though. Really well done. A perfect example of how beautiful phrasing doesn't need to compromise continuity.

Wow! Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better... this! Chen is at the top of his game. Just heard him play the Mendelssohn with the Gothenburg with the same energy, precision and emotion. Like Vengerov, he really brings out the music as it was intended to be heard, full of vigor and bravura. This can only be achieved if you are completely immersed and committed and physically able to do so, which they of course are. Both concertos executed so cleanly, the audience certainly got their money’s worth. Luckily for us, the camera work and sound is an equally impressive performance!!

This piece was dedicated to Mendelssohn’s good friend, Ferdinand David. Although this piece conceived in 1838, the work took another six years to complete and was not premiered until 1845. Meanwhile, David gave Mendelssohn some suggestions.
The piece itself was one of the best violin concertos of the Romantic era and was influential on many other composers. The concerto consists of three movements in a standard fast–slow–fast structure that was a more traditional form during that time. The three movements are melodically and harmonically connected and played. I also really like the beginning melody and the transitions, also the orchestra that acompanys this player. This player is a very good person on emotions and dynamics. He is just good at everything in general.

I think one of the best things about watching professional orchestras (especially mostly string ensembles) is how much they move and "dance" when they play. Not just their arms and hands but their whole bodies. You can see the passion and love of music not just in how beautiful a piece it is but also in the physicality of the performers. Really goes to show the hard work that goes into making something sound THAT GOOD but still have fun. Absolutely gorgeous 10/10 favorite classical piece <3

For the first time ever I regret that the concerto ended at 28:33. I am sure with such a maverlous performance by soloist and by orquestra conducted ideally, Mendelssohn would have extended movements of this beautiful violin concerto to one hour or more.

Young Mr Chen made us a nice gift by his inspired playing of this piece. I thank him fo that. This piece is, if I am allowed to speak commercially, hard to sell not so much because of technical difficulty, but because it's ubiquity - so many musicians presented their version and public is not easy to be impressed.
Still Mr Chen resisted the usual contemporary instinct to break rules and respected the composer and piece itself. He played with clear and very pleasant sound. Maybe some tiny imperfections, like very small rush at 10:20 could be improved, but generally he gave us fine musical performanse and enjoyment.

Just thinking that its hard to play any instrument but if you do you think its impossible to play in orchestra but when you do that concert masters are on another level... and then you find out that there was some guy who though that there will be Ray Chen accompanied by such an orchestra under such a conductor and all of it will work this way so it's reasonable to to write that piece.

His interpretation- along with impeccable phrasing, intonation and passion, give him the potential of becoming the Heifetz of the 21st century. Unfortunately, the disappointingly bad video editing, cutaways and camera angles ruin what could have been a collectors showpiece.

One of five violin concertos, favorites for more that 60 years. "Chickebn soup" for my heart when I need it. Unfortunately I can no longer hear the higher notes as in my youth listening to Heifetz. I know they are there but I cnt hear them.
I need a little more soup today, Beethoven's next and maybe Bruch''s Scottish.

This is an unusual opinion (slightly, among snobbish violinists) - I think Ray is actually underrated. It was easy for me to slightly dismiss him, because he does photo shoots, puts in a lot of effort to look good (a crime lol), but you need that to be successful these days, and behind all the showmanship and being a celebrity, he's a really great violinist, with fresh, sensitive interpretations. Great recording!

It must have been very hot on that stage with all the lighting on him! And he’s fully dressed with a bow tie on. He’s sweating bullets, poor guy. But he still sounds great! He maintained his composure and still got through it just fine.
