This familiar piece sounds refreshing and new in Shaham's hands. This is what great artists do. They take something you think you know and they have you consider it in wholly different way. Bravo Gil!

Cannot imagine how many times he must have played this concerto, yet, his enthusiasm and joy he expresses for the music and toward other musicians and audience as if this was the first time, is a greatest gift. Yet, he seems so humble, and to be this great. He would rather give the ovation to the orchestra than receiving it for himself. I just love listening and watching him play. Thank you.

If you close your eyes and hear him play. It sounds as if he has a 10m long bow. Every note is so well connected... The only pity here is that some parts are a little too fast.

Shaham is a favorite in Germany. He actually had a weak beginning in the Mendelssohn but the rest was pretty good. I heard him live with the San Francisco Symphony in this same concerto and it was much better than this. Sometimes he looks like he is trying to play instead of just playing. At times, he had the Bach thing sounding like an Irish reel but his intonation was truly flawless. But he is, after all, a great fiddler and musician.

Shaham came to my attention when I heard him play Beethoven's triple concerto. The performance here started out poorly with unsteady tempo but gradually improved as time went on. He and the orchestra weren't together at first, but then it became better as they became more in sync w/ one another as time went by. His cadenza is very nice but why did he have to laugh afterward? It seemed odd. He has nice phrasing but, regrettably, no long bow lines, which this romantic concerto needed. The last movement was forgettable, so prosaically played. The last chord of the orchestra should have been a splashing thunder but it sounded like a sweet dolce rose. Unbelievably dumb ending. The recording isn't good also. Lastly, I wonder why people state Mendelssohn concerto in E minor when he only wrote 1 violin concerto.

Gil Shaham is my favorite player overall....consistently amazing interpretations on everything he plays. The top is wide and filled with wonderful artists, as is the level just below. We are blessed to have such a rich array of performers these days to choose from...especially here on youtube...where one can analyze and critique to hearts content. But the test is when someone can turn out a performance of Wieniasky concerto no.1 in live performance, and own it!! Only two I know of so far...Gil Shaham and Midori.

BRAVO!!! Every note was played mechanically correct with musical calculation. It’s nice to see a human
robot with programmed feeling. A lot of 1st position, open strings, harmonics? Basic correct playing.1st
mvt. good. 2nd mvt. was okay. 3rd mvt. was great, the best perfect performance!!! I was surprised to see
him play the last note in 3rd pos. on the G str. as opposed to 1st finger on the D str. Very sterile and safe. Everything correct but not memorable. Fake feeling with no individual character.

kind of a back to basics Mendelssohn, without the maudlin effects we usually hear, no wallowing in the slow sections, no excessive rubatos, staying in low positions, etc. i could do with a little less of the smiling and the "gee aren't we having fun" stuff.
the Bach is good, but he probably needs to learn some new encores. he's been playing the same thing for years at every concert i've heard.
