I've eaten 1 meal a day for almost 6 years and it's been the greatest thing I've ever done for myself. I eat whatever I want but the majority of the time it's steak/chicken and vegetables from the garden. I eat fast food about 2 times a year. it's not rocket science but people have turned it into rocket science.

Pretty much did everything stated in here.
I was 315lbs and had Type 2 Diabetes, hypothyroidism, high uric acid, fatty liver, high cholesterol, high ferritin iron, and so much more.
After the change;
Pre-diabetic, normal thyroid production, normalized uric acid, normalized liver enzymes, slightly elevated cholesterol, normalized ferritin iron, and so on.
I am currently at 231lbs (84lbs difference)
My four foundations are "Diet", "Fasting", "Daily Fitness", and "Sleep".
I tend to lose about 5 lbs every month to month and a half.
I also started weight lifting following my fitness instructor's instruction.
I've never felt better.

Been plant-based for 6+ years - removed most processed foods, eating 80+% whole foods. It's been amazing to see and feel the change. Never felt better, thought clearer, or recovered from workouts so fast.

I've always been very fit. Always did more than one sport, often at competition level. Never been fat. I used to think I could eat whatever I wanted because I worked out.
Then I had a heart attack at 59. Turns out that, because I had a sugar addiction, I was damaging my arteries to the point of near-fatal clogging. Insuline resistance is dangerous in more ways than one.
I made one tweak to my lifestyle - no more sugar, at all. I also eat less bread and carbs in general but the sugar was the big thing. I always ate fairly healthy except for the sweets, and that hasn''t changed, just, no more sugar (or sugar replacements). I think I'm alright now, back to working out. It was a wake up call. My heart did not suffer any damage so I'm fine. Lesson for me: diet is SO important, and there's more to it than eating the right things. Make sure you DON'T eat the WRONG things.

Thank you Dr Perlmutter for all you do to help spread the word about Uric acid and more. This video is exceptional for me in that it lasts 7 minutes. We are all short on time and short bites of vital info. compared to one hour plus talks will be watched by huge numbers. Please can we have more short videos? Our lives depend upon them!

I am of Mediterranean descent. I am convinced my diet should be also. I am very weak and sick when in the USA. I return back to Sicily, no mental fog and no need for intense exercising.
I walk everyday. There is no shame in not having a car here. In fact, it is quite normal to have one car per household. I am in my mid 50s and have never struggled with weight gain or health issues.

I was in the Finnish army field exercise where there's less than food than in the barracks. We got chili chicken in a tin can and everyone was excited until we realized it tasted somehow weird. One guy even said "this must be spoiled or something" and threw it away despite being hungry. I checked the ingredients and it was 4.9% sugar. I had never seen so much sugar in savory food and as you may guess, the chicken was produced in USA and I'm guessing it first time I ate anything with corn syrup.

Im a carnivore for over a year now, banned all these oils and refined sugar. Even though I wasn't overweight or had autoimmune or something else. I still lost weight (10kg), remained keeping my weight for 9 months now. I am less tired, way more energy, possitive minded, better skin, and I got rid of brainfog (didn't even know that I had it).
Eventhough I looked muscled (I train a lot), I wasn't healthy. Don't get fooled by the mirror.

As a european this video feels so american to me. I grew up in rural south of France and rarely ate processed foods growing up. People don't know what's good or bad to them or calculate food intake. No diet. Just local food. Just eat real food and move your a*s. I find it incredible that some people need to be told what's good or bad for them. Sad.....

I am 51, last year in January I started the keto diet and cut out sugars, processed foods and all those dangerous seed oils. I now use olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, ghee and real BUTTER. I can smear a slice of keto bread with a thick layer of butter and enjoy at noon or right after my meal. I fast and eat during window of 12noon-5pm, and I’ve got to say I have never felt better.

When my son was 19 he ended up in hospital and diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. His diet was very good but he ate gluten…… we added probiotics, vitamins D,C and zinc but importantly removed the gluten.
The consultant couldn’t believe he hadn’t taken ANY meds and was perfectly well 2 years later.

I've been eating a low-carb diet at least 97% of the time for almost 2 years straight. As a result, I'm down 76 pounds, have lots more energy, my skin tone went from shallow to radiant, I lost that foggy-headed feeling I used to wake up to every morning and I don't have that achy body inflammation any more. Oh, and my dreaded sweet tooth is under control. I finally feel like I am taking charge of my health and love that the foods I put into my body are the reason why.

So, yes, its critical to create and live a disciplined nutritional environment.

i have lived this way for 4 years straight now and i can attest to this information 100% the research and information given in this video are accurate and can save you lots of pain if you follow it. It is important though to understand you own body so you know exactly what happens when you eat a certain type of food.

I only eat one meal a day (including fruits & vegetables…mixed 50/50 with organic). My wife & I cook our own foods. We eat out maybe once or twice per year. No soda, no alcohol, no smoke, we only drink green tea, made fresh juice and drink coffee 8 or 10 times per year. I kept my weight at 135lbs over 40 years and going strong. Life is good!👍

The medical industry since the 50s, has been wrong on margarine vs butter, egg white omelets vs egg omelets, low fat milk vs whole milk, snacking between meals vs no snacking between meals, seed oils vs beef tallow, lard, butter for cooking. All has caused insulin resistance and record obesity, type II diabetes.

It isn't toxic food...it's toxic eating:
I'm 65 years old and for the first time in my life I can see my abs (I've lost all visible body fat); how did I do it?....by not eating so often. I eat what I want, as much as I want (fructose, gluten, animal fats, meats, potatoes, seafoods, take-out and a beer on Saturday night, etc.), the catch is, I only eat one meal a day; and, I DON'T DRINK CALORIES. If you're drinking anything other than water (or water-based, like coffee & teas) you will never be not fat.
It didn't take me long, once I figured it out, to get un-sick, un-fat, to awaken and engage the metabolic pathways within-me to burn body fat for fuel (which for our ancestors was their default metabolic pathway to fuel themselves). If you're eating more than one meal a day and you've been conned into drinking calories (pops, sugar-lattes, milks, nut-milks, flavoured waters, big gulps, etc.) you'll never, ever, ever flip your metabolic switch from burning consumed-sugars to burning stored-body-fat.
From birth you've been programmed to be a consumer, the more you consume the more you spend which is good for the money-grunts (corporations) that sell us crap. Food is the biggest cash crop of them all, the more you eat the richer they get. So I decided to quit being a mindless chewing-machine and shut my cake-hole for 23 hours a day and when I got thirsty (I'm not talking about the con of constant hydration either), when I experienced real thirst I just drank what our ancestors drank and all other animals drink....water.

I really feel for the average US citizen. The quality of many of the foods there seems much worse compared to other western countries, and there seems to be much more engrained habits with eating unhealthy processed foods. Like I’m pretty sure high fructose corn syrup isn’t even a thing in my country, but it seems to be in so many foods in the US.

Morbid obesity is very common in my family. Partly from genetics, partly from learned behavior. My younger brother & sister plus many other relatives have died young from complications due to morbid obesity.
I FIGHT IT!
Family members say that I'm lucky that I'm able to thwart it. Luck has nothing to do with it. It's a struggle that I constantly deal with. Daily exercise, staying aware, refrain from processed junk that is marketed as food, refrain from excess sugars & salt.
Whatever the ex huzz is or isn't, I'm very grateful to his faster metabolism genetics so that obesity is far less prevalent in my 4 children.
Also, I was very careful as to what my precious children ate, what they drank.
Something I did that made a huge difference was to tell my children from a very early age, just how to get me to say "YES" when I took them grocery shopping with me.
I told them that if they ask me for any fresh fruit or vegetable from the produce area, I would say YES, every time. If they asked for anything else, I would say, NO>
This shaped their appetites for healthier food choices.

Dr Perlmutter is brilliant.
We have normalized eating/drinking horrible chemicals. And then built a (very profitable) industry around fixing the consequences of what we consume (that blames anything but the root cause…)
It’s no different than normalizing hitting ourselves in the head with a hammer (daily), then opening up expensive clinics to deals with the wounds, and developing new and better hammers. 😢🔨

I hate to add fuel to the fire, but for awareness, people should know that glysophate has reached all crops. Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide and crop desiccant and is in our foods. It's never been more important to grow your own food or at least purchase only organic.

Just to say in Italy and in Croatia, I think in all EU, there are special laws for oils and what you can call extra virgin olive oil. So when you buy it here it is really olive oil 100%, but only the quality is diferent depending from where olives come, what type.... "Olive oil with at least 51% olive oil" can not be called like that, only mixture or similar.

Honestly, it's hard to trust any foods nowadays, when even fresh apples, bananas, onions, and watermelons have little bar codes attached to them. I haven't knowingly bought anything with processed vegetable oil or corn syrup since 1993. That doesn't help when I get a product I'm familiar with, only to find it now contains aspartame, sorbitol, or sucralose, or some type of partially hydrogenated oil. We're being fattened up like cattle and I wonder who's going to buy us?

Practice Earthing by going barefoot in the grass for twenty minutes or so. That's the only thing we need to be physically hooked up to.

I've been eating 1 meal a day (every 24 hours) for years now. It just makes you feel alot better. Now i can't even go back to 3meals/day, it's just too much for me to handle. Plus since it's 1 meal/day you can really eat alot of you wish to. But mostly i try to eat chicken/vegetables. Basically light food mostly. And also as little sugar as possible. I suggest anyone to try this, maybe at first it's hard but later on it basically becomes a normal eating schedule, not just a diet. Oh and my weight is totally fine, i weigh just as much as i used to weigh when i ate 3 meals/day, not overweight and not underweight either.

When the food industry "created" vegetable oil, which is really seed oils, to replace lard, animal fats and butter in cooking is when the worlds population started to become sick with autoimmune diseases and heart disease. Olive, Walnut, Coconut, Avocado, are some safe healthy oils to use along with grass fed animal lard and dairy. Also seed oils (vegetable) are in all processed carbohydrate products everywhere, including breads, cookies, potato chips to name a few so is hidden from us but consumed by us in large quantities consistently.

Great advices! Howerver I'm not sure about the "sleep with a smart watch on (and most probably your phone in your bedroom, on top of that) to monitor your sleep though. I don't think the frequency emitted by those wifi/bluetooth/4g...etc. devices are what your brain and cells will find nice (since they have their own healthy frequency to maintain). I noticed a HUGE change when I inadvertently (at first) forgot to keep my tablet/cell phone in the same room I was sleeping in. really huge! at first didn't know why i felt so much better, but then I forgot again to put it in my bedroom, and noticed the difference again (like a deeper sleep, feeling full of energy and fully rested with a clearer mind) and then I realized what it was.
Since then I put my devices out of the room and far from it at night. So some people might not be affected like me about those, but it made a really big difference for me. and I'm also saying that those devices (tablets and phone) where on "flight mode", with no connection. I saw some research paper saying that if a child has a cellphone on the ear for 2 min, it takes about 2h for the brain waves to go back to the original pattern. it must be similar for adults. in any case, i didn"t wait to read this paper to notice a difference like I said above. You have nothing to loose to try it for yourself for a little while.

I follow a low carb Paleo Diet....basically all veggies except no starchy white potatoes, fresh and dried herbs and spices, sauces and marinades to flavor the food, also eat chicken breasts daily, eggs sometimes, and seafood sometimes. No red meat. I eat fruit only sometimes not daily. No dairy but sometimes snack on mozzarella string cheese. Nuts and seeds only once in a while. For oils I use extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil. No butter cause too much cholesterol. No legumes, no beans, no lentils, no grains, no bread, no rice, no quinoa and no flour of any kind that includes no nut flours either. I stick to drinking mostly homemade iced teas using black and green tea bags brew it hot and ice it down with no sweetener. I do take vitamin pills some in the morning some evening...Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin D3, Biotin, and a multivitamin, I'm in perfect health at age 40. Hope this helps. BMI 23

In the EU, Extra Virgin olive Oil must be only 100% extra virgin olive oil without any other oils blended in. So if you are in the US and you are not sure if your Italian oil is 100% pure extra virgin, check if it is sold in the EU too.

Processed food can taste so great..... And, of course, we overeat. People socialize over food. If you don't bring a carb, fried chicken, or dessert to a family social occasion, you are considered weird. Look at the recipes people pass around; that tells you a lot. Bringing apples or greens to a social event? People think you are nuts. We've made "bad eating" the social norm.

Best Fat is from animal Sources.
Extra virgin olive oil is the least harmful of oils ( fruit oil, not seed/veg oil) but it still oxidises pretty quick ( free radicals damage) and is still high in Omega 6s
Same for avocado oil.
Grass fed butter, ghee, tallo absolute best but must be raw ( unpastorised) grass fed grass finished.
What’s even more important is combining foods as nature gave them to you, therefore, eating the fats that came with the protein nature presented it with, hence ribeye steak, or head to toe with organs, or head to toe fish (meat, fat and organs) Full profile
A whole sardine
A whole oyster
A whole ( pasture) egg
Cannot beat that.
And cannot be compared to olive or avocado or coconut oil. ( only the water of coconut is good 4 u btw)

I live in Kashmir. There we cook with mustard oil and ghee. Mustard is grown here, so it's a local product. I know that mustard oil has many benifits, but it's banned in the US. Whether or not mustard oil is healthy to cook with, I still can't make out. I don't find good information about that. Does anyone know more about mustard oil or maybe has a link?

California we have strict guidelines on what can be called extra virgin. In Italy they will blend lessor oils with an extra virgin cold press and still call it extra virgin not in California it must be 100% cold press virgin to be labeled as such.

HF corn syrup isn't uniquely bad, it's just 55% fructose instead of the 50% of table sugar. The problem is all sugar and the fact we put it in EVERYTHING.

So I know the girl in the cover picture and her name is Stephanie Madsen and she had a form of endocrine cancer. The picture on the left was her after going through some intense chemotherapy and radiation. I want to say she went through over 30 rounds of chemotherapy. That before and after is not of her eating different kinds of foods just an FYI for anyone thinking that. Her Instagram handle is called derailing my diagnosis. You can look her up.

adding all processed oils to the list. Olive oil, coconut oil, even if it says organic. We don't need a lot of oil in our bodies. Steam your veggies, eat them raw. use a little flax seed or hemp seed to get your good fats, or avocado!!

Vote with your dollar, choose organic as often as you can. When grocery shopping, stick to the outer edge of the store. Think about it.. If you picture in your minds eye a grocery store layout, All the natural healthy foods are found in the outer edges of the grocery store. And all the processed garbage foods (Aka Products) are in the aisles, with the exception of a few things like organic olive oil, etc. they are creating products when they create packaged “food”. I highly suggest taking the time to look up maltodextrin and the damage it does and how they don’t even list it as sugar on the label, instead, they include it with carbohydrates. It’s a sneaky little loophole and it’s downright evil.

Unfortunately, the push to use wearables is where I draw the line. It's not that I wouldn't love to have the information to better my health and myself. It's that the tech companies, and the people behind the technocratic agenda, have proven time and time again they do not care about privacy, or us. Many of the people behind these tech companies have already proven they put profit over privacy, and have intentions that have nothing to do with helping you monitor or improve your health.
It is a sad reality that we live in, where the tech that has the potential to benefit us most is being controlled and given to us by those who cannot be trusted, and have nefarious intentions. Anyone thinking of getting one of these CGMs, or any similar device that can detect the most intimate details of your health and biology, should first consider the implications of doing so. Because after everything we've seen over the past couple of years, it is clear our bodies are the new battleground, and this tech may very well be giving information to the enemy.

Eating twice a day and never to the point of bloating is enough. If you're eating healthy foods then they generally have less calories & you'll lose weight. But everyone eats unhealthy every so often & I like having a small desert each day as well which can help fulfill cravings. This tops up any calories lost from eating less meals. Eating around mid morning and then around 6pm keeps you feeling full throughout the day once you get used to it. Snacking on fruit, milk, & nuts can boost calorie intake if it's too low. I don't think people really need as many calories as "health experts" say they need either. It varies from person to person. Everyone in my family gets by on 1500 to 2000 calories a day. During Ramadan we might only eat 1000 calories but we don't lose too much weight. I'm currently lean bulking while only eating 2k calories.

The other thing that annoys me is any form of painkiller syrup for children, read the ingredients, it is full of chemicals... almost like they want to get them hooked and damaged from a young age. People have been taught that sugar is bad, but the corn syrups and all the other artificial sweeteners out there are far worse!

I advise everyone to try and look up a movie or TV show, or videos taken before 1995 (especially before 1980) and take a long hard look at what people looked like. EVERYONE was slim and trim, no fat kids, no fat women, no fat men....even though people may have overeaten at times. Diabetes was extremely RARE. But it's not humans, per se, it's our food (full of sugar, salt, fat and GMOs), and our technology. They are an extremely deadly combination. We used to walk everywhere, not sit for hours on end, we played outside in the sun, took hikes, rode bicycles, went roller skating. Not everyone had a car, so walking was de rigueur. We had to GET UP to turn the TV on/off and change the channel. If we wanted to know something, we went to the LIBRARY, or read a newspaper. We've all become that fat family from Wall-e, that could only navigate on their personal "space autos" being taken care of by robots! WAKE UP AND LIVE, PEOPLE!

Our bodies are hard-wired to put on fat, they always have been throughout history, we stock up during times of feast so we don't die during times of famine. But we don't have famines anymore. I agree we should eat closer foods to our ancestors, but they had fructose too - it's called fruit.

Even 100 percent olive oil, is still a highly refined fat...you would never aquire rhat much fat as quickly and easily from sitting eating some olives.
I'm skeptical to take advice from anyone who recommends you "use as much olive oil as you can get your hands on" when they are speaking of a highly refined and processed fat product. Never know who's getting pay checks from "big oil"

I eat whatever I want. Never gain weight - I'm on my way to 40.
Eat less, move more. This is and always will be the answer.
I eat one large meal a day, if that. Alot of times its Mc Donald's, If I get hungry otherwise I nibble. I'll eat a tim tam (No nutritional content, all "Bad" shit) Still no weight, plenty of energy.
Am I an alien or is this the norm for every human being on the planet barring ones with medical conditions?
If you keep shoveling coal into a steam train, the boiler will expand.
Stop blaming the food for your own fat ass. You are ruining it for people who possess self control.. I want full cream milk, full sugar whatever. Millions of flavors. Nope, fat people exist so we cant sell that because they cannot control themselves.
Take responsibility and stop blaming "Big Food" or "Big Pharma" People will always want to make money and if your too much of a slave to your stomach then they will always try to exploit that.

If uric acid levels are climbing in conjunction with fructose consumption is that correlation or causation? And fructose comes from FRUIT - the primary source of calories in the diets of all apes and monkeys. So there is a huge contradiction here. We evolved to consume high amounts of fruit.

The information about importation of olive oil by Italy is completely wrong. We have fantastic EXTRA-VIRGIN olive oil produced in Italy with italian olives, that you can buy everywhere, from the local farmer to the supermarket. Unfortunatly there are some olive oils imported from the European Union (because the European Union forces us to import a certain quantity of olive oil) but nobody in Italy buys them.

FYI @3:30 COCONUT OIL IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU!!!!
I went from 187 to 150 over a period of two years. Not with some radical diet. Also, my calorie intake was the same over that time period as I tracked it diligently in Cronometer.
The change I made - removed about 80% of the highly processed garbage from my diet.
My breakfast even up to that point was a nice large smoothie with lots of whole fruits and veggies in it, that didn't change. What did change is my lunches and dinners. Since I took the easy calories away and I didn't want to starve I ended up using calorie dense things like beans and whole grains (rice, red winter wheat, barely, etc.) as my base meal then highly nutritionally dense adders to get the rest of my micro nutrients in (broccoli, kale, purple or orange sweet potato, bell peppers, onions, ok - most all veggies).
My intent wasn't even to lose weight but to just eat how I know I should eat. Maybe once per week the wife and I would have a treat, but for the other meals - very healthy. After maybe a few weeks our tastes started to chance and even what we once loved didn't appeal to us anymore. Going to a restaurant if it wasn't colorful (like a mix of nice plant foods) it had no appeal. All the browns of baked or fried foods - gag me.
Before this diet change I was participating in explosive sports, weight training, etc. for decades.
Cut out the crap in order just to eat better with the same calories and no intent to lose weight (I was afraid to calorie cut and lose the muscle / strength that I use in the gym, hiking, sport, etc) and over a couple years nearly 40lbs came off!
I was quite shocked to say the least. Even today I still make a periodic gain with my weight training (adding a rep on something I was maxed at for quite sometime or add a little more weight) while still hanging within the same 5ish pound range of where I landed.
The last thing that I just cut out was added two teaspoons sugar to my coffee. It took me a few weeks of slowly cutting real sugar with Monk fruit and not the sugar is 100% out. Sometimes I even drink it black which it something I never did, less it was a properly made espresso - love that stuff.
Everyone should give whole foods a go with mostly whole plants (or all if you aren't a meat eater). Take a few weeks or a few months to transition if you need too so you have time to properly adjust. You will find that suddenly the thing that you used to drive 25 miles out of your way to get will have no appeal anymore even if a hot woman in a bikini hands it to you on a plate and gives you the flirty eyes. You just see the food you used to love and maybe, like me, you will know and remember why you loved it and maybe it smells great but your desire to actually eat it is just gone.
But even not, years into it I do laugh at myself when I get hungry if I am running errands or something because all I can sometimes thing about is a nice huge salad with all kinds of veggies in it or a rice bowl with a bunch of grilled veggies, beans, avocado etc. when I used to just pull into a gas station and get some garbage in there or a fast food drive through and get garbage there.
So worth the change over. I may or may not live longer, but I will have more years that are healthy and productive rather than spending ten years slowly dying and going downhill like many of my family members due to their lifestyle choices. I started late in life but still will have a solid couple of decades of healthy eating and moving before I hit retirement age so I should come out the other end pretty well.

It's a lie that people are different. That is a half fact hidden behind a much larger truth of being subjected to many different foods/environments over many years, that only on the surface makes this a truth. Also the fact the some people don't react so much to this and that, should more count as a warning that some people are so messed up with their health that they don't at all react like they are supposed to. That is one of the very biggest factors what the medical science won't admit to. Because it still is an industry that has to sell solutions to their customers, and therefore it must NOT judge people or else they won't come back! One of the biggest faults of the medicin and other industries.

Eating healthy will help you live a healthier life and help extend your life in many cases, but genetics is the biggest factor with that. The vast majority, of people are sick/dying young from heart attacks etc, isn't because of diet, it's from genetic problems. Eat the best you can, exercise and stay postitive. You're not going to live forever so make sure to enjoy your life as much as you can and not worry as much about extending it. Your passion for life and quality of life at 100 isn't going to be great, if you live that long, so enjoy some dessert etc.. just don't abuse things. Getting carried away with healthy living can be dangerous also mentally and physically. Keep a balance and nothing you eat is going to kill you, unless it's poison lol.

Sedentary lifestyle is what is more the problem than anything, people need to exercise at least a 1/2 hour a day, intensely. There are many people that their only exercise is walking to and from their car, there is nothing more important, you can eat like a pig as long as you burn it off and have a muscle base to burn it off. Don't get me wrong I am all for not eating processed foods but without exercise anything can make you fat unless you starve yourself.

The ONLY thing that matters for weight management is calories in vs. calories out. Even health conditions like a thyroid hormone dysbalance are subject to that equation as it's baked into the calories out side of the equation.
The laws of thermodynamics are fundamental to how our universe works and the human body cannot defy physics.
Low carb, keto, if are all fad diets that only work if they help you achieve whatever calorie target you need to reach. Just like any other dietary approach, it's purely for adherence and has no weight loss or gain advantages beyond the impact on your individual energy balance through improving adherence to calorie targets.

Right at the very beginning of this video: “50% of Americans will be obese by the year 2030.” Well, that will be a massive improvement over what it is now which from what I see it’s already approaching 100%. 🤣
Maybe you use different parameters or boundaries for the definitions.
If you can get it down to just 50% of you in the next 8 years America, then “well done” and you are to be commended! 👏🏽
(WOW! I was just being a little facetious above but when I check the figures online it turns out that if you combine both obese and overweight figures you get the result that literally hardly any Americans are a healthy weight! 😮😯😲)

I recommend to eat what your ancestors ate. Blood type is an adaptation to different lifestyles. Also, as a broad rule; choose your foods from the outside aisles of the grocery store. Example; I am a pure bred Celt. It is important that I eat very much like an early Scott or Pict.

1. You talk a lot without presenting any data points to back up your assumptions. 2. We are all biochemically unique, it’s called biochemical individuality. Thus, you cannot make broad sweeping assumptions about entire populations of humans. Unless you test the entire human race there is no way you can assume, without data to back up your assumptions, that results from study that looked at 25, 000 subjects, e.g., can be extrapolated to apply to the entire human race.

He, and others, say that all humans are different. Why don't we hear animal experts saying that all sheep are different? Or, all lions are different? Or, all zebras are different?
All sheep shouldn't be fed the same diet! Nor should all lions, or all zebras!
Why do we think the the optimal healthy diet varies from person to person, when it doesn't from lion to lion, etc.? 🤪🤪🤪

Great message, but I hate this video. The shaming of all these overweight people makes me sad. We never shame some dude who has ED, even though it's almost 100% caused by a crap diet, usually heavy in meat. No, we say, here's a pill cause it's not your fault. We never knock a woman who is dealing with breast cancer, even though it's likely caused by her diet. I agree that everyone should make that effort to eat as well and healthfully as possible, but the shame is just awful and so many think it's a good thing to "motivate the fatties." Just something to keep in mind because I know plenty who struggle and they watch every calorie and type of food and despite excellent blood panels, they are grouped in with those who consume McD's or pizza.

Still afraid to say to just eat animal instead of plant fats, but somehow coconut oil is okay, the most saturated fat there is - and I agree it is good but not as nutritious as animal fat that also contains fat soluble vitamins. Quality olive oil however is just on the border between good and bad, having more linoleic acid, so I wouldn't consume it liberally. It's good advice though, but not having the guts to recommend animal foods is just poor character. The whole thing could've been condensed into: just eat meat, eggs, etc (cooking in animal fats with the exception of coconut oil because it's saturated just like animal fats). It's simple and it will make you lose weight and cure type-2 diabetes while making you feel satiated. Sometimes the truth is just too simple to see.

I AM ITALIAN AND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING WITH R ESPECT OF OIL IT IS QUITE TRUE. IN FACT IF YOU WANT ORIGINAL EXTRA VIRGIN OIL YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT label reflects that is made in ITALY. The reason why we import oil from other european countries are the following : 150 million plants spread over an area of 1,165,458 hectares; 700 thousand farms in the sector; 350 Italian cultivars (species). 37 PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) which represent, unfortunately, only 2% of the Italian market. Thus , Italy produces in the best years, 300-500 tons of extra virigin olive oil, it consumes 500-600 thousand tons and exports 300-400 thousand tons. Other type of oils which should not be considered extra virgin oil is rapeseed oil. With respect to sugar intake, you are also quite right. I remember when in Oz there were spots recommending higher consumption of sugar in order to boost brain functions and body energy. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A clarification of Italy being largest olive oil importer.
Spain is, by far, the largest producer of olive oil, concentrating 40-50% (depending of the year) of worldwide production. Italy is the second biggest with at most 10% of worldwide production. Third is Morroco with around 6-7%.
The reason why they are the largest importers is because they are, by far, the largest sellers of olive oil in the world. But in reality what they sell is not Italian olive oil, but mostly Spanish and Morroccan mixed with either small portions of Italian olive oil, or other types that do the other 49% mentioned.

Is too much insulin a root cause for the chronic diseases that plague modern society? According to Professor Ben Bikman, it likely is.
And he should know. Professor Bikman is a scientist and researcher who specializes in insulin and its effects on our health.
In his new book, Why We Get Sick, Dr. Bikman makes a case for why we need to target insulin levels to improve global health. As you’ll hear him say, lifestyle choices can cause insulin resistance, and they can cure it, too. The tools are at our disposal; we just need to know what they are and how to use them.
Dr. Bikman speaks with a combination of authority and humility that’s rare in today’s world of soundbites. I appreciate his expertise and his approach, and I hope you will as well.

Went to my Endocrinologist today. I was put on a new condensed insulin and they have raised it till I am at 200 units now. I told my doc I gained 25 pounds in the last few months. She said there is nothing that can be done. I was discouraged until someone mentioned your book "Why We Are Sick." Just ordered it and looking forward to reading it

Ben Bikman is one of the great modern heroes of our times. I wondered many times how many millions of lives will he save by shifting the paradigm on diabetes and the perception we have of insulin? Tens of millions? Hundreds? Certainly over time. Of course to that many others contribute, from health coaches to doctors and dietitians that similarly contributed to changing outdated attitudes in the medical establishment, but research professors have a special place among them for providing the explanations and the evidence all the rest use to proliferate the knowledge. His Children should be(and am sure they are) very proud of their father.

I am doing fasting with low carb and it works.OMAD helps me with my insulin resistance. The key is I eat even less than I ate before now and much less carbs. I lowered my calorie intake. Feeling full is not easy when you have insulin resistance. So eating only once is much easier for me. I feel full and stop eating. So I eat half of what I was eating before I started OMAD. I eat very few carbs. I feel so good after around 18-19 hours of fasting. I am doing this to get rid of my insulin resistance and the infections that it is causing in my body.

The scenario that you mention at the end where OMAD becomes a mini binge was me when I first started. I knew it wasn't ideal, but it was better than eating ("sugar") all day and it was what I could manage at that time. Gradually it is improving as I get more educated and healthier, without me having to try really too hard. It's a mistake to assume our long term results will be based on how good or bad our plan is when we first start out. Do what you can, even if it's a little. If you have to promise yourself a high carb reward to get through your first ten 20- hour fasts, who cares? Just gradually keep trying to do better when you are able. As they say, the perfect is the enemy of the good.

It would be interesting to see a study on how hyperinsulinemia affects gut bacteria. I have a strong feeling that stuff like SIBO is very much something that is affected by high insulin levels, with insulin being the proliferator or growth factor. What do you think Dr. Bikman?

As always I love Prof. Bikman's knowledge on insulin. I also brought his book. I just want to touch on OMAD. I have been doing intermittent fasting for decades. It used to called skipping meals. But anyway, I find that Your body don't allow OMAD Binge because you actual get fuller faster when eating OMAD. It is when you allow few hours of eating your OMAD that can cause binge. So, if you pile up a table full of food only eating as much as you can til you feel full, you will not binge comparing to allowing yourself few hours to eat a meal.

This is to me the best explanation of insulin resistant. I am 71 years old and still working to keep my body active and I'm trying to follow low carb diet socI can reduce some weight because of my knee problem and to keep my blood sugar level to normal as I have been on borderline high. Thanks for the informations and I am for sure will share this to those who need this eye opening topic.

Awesome interview, thank you dr. Scher and prof. Bikman! Just a note: if you do time restricted eating/IF/OMAD combined with LC for a while a do it correctly, e. g. you are fat adapted, your hunger and cravings go away. When you then eat nutritionaly dense food and quality protein and fats, it is actually hard to overdo => satiating effect of protein and fat. Your hormones kick-in and your body tells you when to stop. You just have to watch for meal timing and like Prof. Bikman said, don’t eat right before bed. Finish at least 2 hours or more before sleeping.

Omg... im an RN and budding freelance research writer.
I'm going to read all of your work! I would love to work with you one day. I'm over coming insulin resistance, fatty liver, losing weight, and ketovore/ IF daily. Down 33 lbs since March 19th. Battling cancer now, which as we all well know cancer is just metabolic disorder of the mitochondria....we've even sickened them with our SAD!

Very good information. was not sleeping well and my work and life overall have been very stressful for the last 10 years. Luckily, my blood pressure is always normal and my lipid panels except LDL (slightly high) are also normal. What has worked for me to return to my normal pre prediabetes state has been 16/18 IF with two meals. On weekends, I can go for a whole day for one meal only. However, I do not want to lose any more weight, and I will stop the weekend 24. I find it very easy for me to do since even before learning I was prediabetic, I was skipping meals almost everyday and I am a small eater.

I had PCOS which caused diabetes as an older adult. At 50 I had a vertical sleeve gast. I got to the goal weight of 150lbs (I'm 5'8"). However, the fat had been so severely redistributed that even now I've got way too much fat between the bellybutton and breasts. I'm very small from bellybutton down. I've also got end-stage Ankylosing Spondylitis. Mine went from fused si joints to C1 and worked its way down. I'm hyperkyphotic and fused from T12-C1, so I'm limited on using any exercise equipment that could cause a fall, like a treadmill, for example, so I mostly lost the weight through calorie and carb restriction. Although my A1C has been in the 5s for the last few years ( insert happy dance here). I've wondered if I started some sort of cardio AND went back on metformin, if it would assist in getting rid of the inner tube around my upper abdomen. It took 2+ years to take off 120lbs, post menopausal! Now I've still got an ugly body that I can't dress like a thin person. I wear a 2 or 4 on the bottom and a large or extra large on the top. Between that and my AS making me look like the bride of Quasimodo, it's discouraging!
Speaking of PCOS, every woman in my Ankylosing Spondylitis support group that has advanced AS ( present as a man with the disease has PCOS). I found that fascinating. So did my Rheumatologist. So much he took my idea and published research on it! SMH I should have got a discount on my visits! LOL 😆

This is how I found out that I had hyperinsulinemia: After listening to a video with Jason Fung I decided to cut my carbs one day. My body reacted strongly the following night (heart racing, hunger, sweating, restlessness) and I had a strong episode of hypoglycemia the following morning (weakness, shakyness, more sweating). I do not take any medication to lower blood glucose and was never diagnosed diabetic (I haven't had my blood glucose checked in years). That episode of hypoglycemia that I was able to recognize easily as I am a nurse made me realize that I needed to really cut down my carbs and change my diet to lower and hopefully reverse my hyperinsulinemia. By the way, I am in my sixties and always had issues with controling a healthy body weight.

Thanks for this interview. Interesting. I just got the book of Dr. Bikman. Have to read it. One issue that I do not see the adequate position on: what about fluid intakes (water?/tea/coffee.others). Amounts (64 oz/day?). Does it make a difference in insulin levels? What are the typical responses of the body while being monitored by CGM?

The discussion briefly went over fasting and the minimun dose. If I may add to the conversation, I have been getting weekly blood tests intermixed with no fasting, 12 hr fasting, 36 hr fasting, and 84 hr fasting. I tracked exercise and belatedly started tracking sleep and energy levels. Within my N=1 study, I have noticed that HDL and TG don't really response to fasting dose. Neither does hs-CRP, but hs-CRP does appear to respond to exercise prior to the blood draw. Uric acid increases 30-50% by stretching a 36 hr fast to 84 hrs. While it was initially confusing, the biggest effects of fasting dose appear to be on LDL - more specifically, particle count and mix of particles. LDL needs to be cross correlated with the white cell count, because LDL is performing an immune response, too (a higher white cell count will lower the LDL particle count). With steady white cell counts, my LDL particles will increase by roughly 30% from a 36-hr dose to a 84-hr dose. This is partially confounded by the exercise dose prior to the blood draw, because the number of VLDL particle jump up - because obviously in a ketogenic fasted state, VLDL is the only energy delivery mechanism to the muscle cells. For the longer dose of 84-hrs the greatest increase in LDL particles seems to be in the small and medium size particles, but VLDL still increased by more that 20%

Dr Ben - I need to ask a question. You’ve talked a lot about the damage caused IR and the damage to the cells caused by seeds oils. You’ve also said that (I think) that heart disease and Alzheimer’s are modern disease - so given that women only have two children on ave now could bladder and uterine issues be modern issues also. We don’t produce 6/7 children anymore yet everyone I talk to seems to have bladder and uterine issues, hysterectomys etc . Sorry it’s random but I just wanted the question picked up if poss

I would love to have Ben Bikman reconcile his research findings on the impact of insulin resistance on our bodies and metabolic syndrome plus other chronic diseases vs Dr. Rick Johnson’s research on the connection between fructose on uric acid and then on insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Bikman focuses on glucose and insulin while Rick Johnson focuses on both fructose and glucose, with uric acid being a key intervening factor.

On problems of prosperity: I grow all my own fruits and vegetables, and enough for relatives and neighbors to get some. Many days, I am outside 5-6 hours per day, moving compost or mulch, digging, tying up, weeding, mowing with a push mower, raking, turning compost. I also go fishing now and then. So much of my food is fresh, maximum nutrition, eaten or frozen within minutes or, at worst, hours of harvest. I get more Vitamin D from the sun than most. And there are mood-elevating chemicals in soil, they say, so I work glove-free and barefoot. Some years, I get a deer a relative has hunted. This year, I'm getting hens for eggs. With all my mind, heart, and body, I believe this is closer to what we're supposed to do, what our bodies are hardwired to do. Sitting in a cubicle for 9 hours and eating sugar most assuredly is not.

Really great interview!
To the question « what is the common link between insuline and all modern diseases », I think the question deserves more attention and I can think of other common links as the « growth promotion » that was mentionned: 1. Insuline is inflammatory by itself, and inflammation causes degradation and faster aging and dieases like cancer through cell degradation 2. The body overly relying on glucose forgets how to burn fat, which in turn leads to less mitochondria, which in turn leads to less cell respiration and more fermentation, which is the energy fuel of cancer 3. Glucose depletes us from vitamines and minerals, and reduces our immune system strenght (glucose has priority for vitamine C transport for example) making us more vulnerable to viruses 4. The glycation damage caused by glucose and overeating over the long run 5. The constant inhibition of certain hormones and processes like autophagy that can’t be active at the same time as insuline 6. The impact of glucose itself on our stress and anxiety levels, worsened sleep which in turn increase insuline (my theory is that the body and brain senses that there is a lot of inflammation going on and he freaks out with anxiety that can be felt in the brain and phisically in the upper chest area). 7. Obesity makes people physically less active which in turn makes that the energy in the system is not used quicly enough to prevent glycation processes 8. Insuline promotes glucose storage in places where it can be available as a source of energy for bad bacteria, viruses and cancer 9. Insuline makes us blind to the fat that could be burned which means the body sees only the calories we eat which in turn reduces the metabolism as soon as people are reducing their calories intake if they are not at the same time in low insuline- ketosis state as their body thinks that they are in starvation while at the same time having hundreds of thousands of calories at their disposal but unable to tap them because of insuline and metabolism reduction leads to less calories burning overall, reduction in muscle mass correlated with higher death rates 10. Insuline being an emergency process of glucose storage in cells to avoid comma for our brain, it also makes us hungry a lot more quickly as the energy was not available long enough in the blood to give us a constant source of energy throughout the day, which leads to more food consumption as we get hungry too quickly, the switch off mechanism of insuline being very long when we are insuline resistant.

Re Cortisol and insulin resistance. I recently had 5 days off travelling 3 hours to a beautiful country location and felt extremely relaxed. I noticed my fasting glucose went down by .6 mmol to 4.2 while away. As soon as I came back to the big smoke it went back up by .6 mmol to 4.8. My guess is Cortisol.

How to get the benefit of a 20 hour fast in 16 hours: do HIIT exercise in the middle of your 16 hour fast ...continue fasting post workout to the 16 hour mark ... no supplements or snacks of any kind before or after the HIIT session. Do this only twice per week, say Monday/Thursday (at least two walking recovery days in between HIIT days). If you are not fat adapted, you will have to work up to this regimen gradually.

Hi! I'd like to ask - if someone has been doing OMAD for 30+ years, is female aged 50. And is now putting on weight and in peri menopause and pre diabetic. Would you suggest they start eating 2 meals a day within an 18/6 or 20/4 fasting window? And consume low carb meals based around high vegetables, quality proteins and fats?

If one adheres to a low-carb/keto diet, is there any downside to being metabolically inflexible (aka glucose intolerant)? I understand one is not insulin resistant, but does just having prolonged/elevated blood-glucose (after eating a mixed-meal) cause any issues? Also, does this mean that insulin is not being produced in sufficient amounts.. if so, does that have any negative long-term consequence? Or is the idea that it's always best to not have much insulin?
Do I understood correctly that omega-3 and 6 are polyunsaturated fatty acids, but it's only the Linoleic acid that signals (via insulin) for fat cells to grow.. until they become resistant, and STOP growing? Do omega-6s/Linoleic acid have any positive role? For example, on Dr. Bill Harris' talk with Chris Masterjohn, he suggests omega-6 metabolites are anti-inflammatory, however if one does not get enough omega-3s (~4g a day), even if rancid, then the body resorts to arachidonic acid (an omega-6) as a substrate to make prostaglandins.. and this leads to inflammation!
Robert Lustig talks about how obesity is a symptom, not the cause of metabolic dysfunction (diabetes and high triglycerides). He cites how 20% of obese people are Metabolically Healthy Obese (MHO) and 40% of normal weight people (67M) have type-2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular dementia, etc. He is studying how insulin resistance in the liver disrupts the FOXO phosphorylation pathway but not always the SREBP-1c pathway!! He suggests a different macro-nutrient as the villain: fructose.
Regarding meal-timing, I've read that melatonin binds to the pancreas to signal less insulin production.. and that post-prandial glucose levels are always lowest in the morning.. yet Adel Moussa suggests it's a misinterpretation of the data, and that we are actually LESS insulin sensitive in the morning (see the Szotak Andrei's Muscle Engineer Podcast #16 (31m)). What does Ben think?
Finally, I understand Ben suggests FAT cells are the 'first domino' to fall in insulin resistance.. any thoughts on Gerald Shulman's work, that suggests MUSCLE cells, are the first cell types to become insulin-resistant? He suggests the mitochondrial oxidation slows-down leading to fatty acids entering the muscle cells and inhibiting the uptake of insulin/glucose (DAG->PKCtheta->IRS-1->PI 3-kinase->GLUT4). The insulin resistance then spreads to the the muscle, and finally the liver (GLUT2).

Very insightful, i really just cannot comperhend how in the heck does the calorie model for weight loss works... Like we see that the vast majority of overweight and probably almost all of the obese people are insulin resistent and you cannot get there via eating too much fat and protein unless of course you're gonna eat fast food (so low micronutrient foods) but honestly even there you'll always get carbs alongside. Now it's still possible to overeat fat if you've got leptin resistence or if you're an emotional eater but then you'll just gain some weight and perhaps increase your blood triglycerides but you won't ever get insulin resistence that way. And protein... still not possible by eating foods, perhaps possible if you're consuming protein powders?

Dr Bikman is right about making plans to break a fast. It's very difficult to stop eating once you start, even if the foods are keto.

I had a bad fall off a horse & damaged my neck. I have been getting epidural injections every three months that contain cortisol. Do you think that’s enough to make me insulin resistant? I’ve been IF and been on Keto for 7 months. I lost 6 pounds of fat initially but I’m kind of stuck now. I wonder if they are connected.

A question for Professor Bikman. If someone were to strength train or do HIIT in a fasted state ( 16 hrs plus ) and then break their fast with an 800 to 1,000 calorie meal within the low carb spectrum, would that meal be considered binge eating and too many calories to break the fast with? Also if they ate another meal consisting of the same amount of calories and ketogenic style foods 4 to 5 hours later and the last meal was more than 3 hours before the person goes to sleep, Would this be a good regimen for fasting windows ? Let’s say the person weighs somewhere between 180 and 240 lbs? Thanks you for all your insight and knowledge! Loving this diet doctor podcast 🤘

Great conversation! Both of you are doing a great job. Thanks for your clarity, honesty, and commitment to discovering the truth about health and nutrition.
On a practical, n-of-1, clinical note, I want to confirm the dangers of OMAD in the evening. If you have children, dinner is an important time to share a family meal. However, now that our kids are grown and we are retired, my wife and I have found that we feel best if we get up with the sun, go for a long walk in nature, eat breakfast around 9 AM, eat dinner around 2 PM, and turn out the lights by 10 PM. This rhythm feels natural, and produces the most refreshing sleep and the best digestion. When we do eat a big meal too close to bedtime, our body doesn't know whether to focus on rest and repair or on digestion, and both suffer.

Great discussion, but y'all missed a big point. Keto/low carb eliminates the hunger problem.
I don't see how I could do int. fasting on a low fat high-carb diet - the hunger would kill me.
Eating fat on keto = no hunger. It's truly amazing. I bet most people are much more likely to fast more effectively if they eat keto (or low carb maybe) when they eat. One of you may have mentioned the hunger thing earlier, but it would have been great if one of you had brought it up on the keto/low carb vs low-fat-hi-carb and int. fasting section.
Lots of stuff to think about here. Thanks.

Bias towards plant based diet is disappointing. Hopefully this will shift towards a clearer and broader conclusion in the low carb community. Reversing and doing a reset using ketones is so hopeful in severe illness. Sixty five year old female runner for forty years dropped meat and dairy eleven years ago after spiking blood pressure issues. Within weeks recovery/pain dramatic improvement and sustained very heathy blood pressure and still running three/five miles a day. Focus on metabolic health / insulin resistance / hyperinsulinemia is so interesting. Thank you.

One comment on a time stamp 1:06:00 about OMAD. I've been doinng IF for 20 months now. It does not work if I eat SAD food. Binging can happen then. It only works when long term fat adapted. That puts the vegan out of this game. I still can not get a good night sleep if I eat after 7pm. I eat mostly, but not purely, fatty red meat and organs, so I will not go back to any other way easily. It is a happier life to me. I hope the cows spirit lives in me.

I can try by
Controlling my Carbs
Prioritizing Proteins, and make
Finer choices of Fats
Eat protein and fat first and added later by little carbs
Restricted Calories intakes, IF, OMAD or Two MAD once a week
all above strategies come to my mind..

When you eat after exercise, there is no time for the body to convert fat back to glucose to replenish exercise induced depletion of glycogen storages in liver and muscles. This is like having high insulin levels constantly.
Prolonged inactivity causes muscle degeneration and reduced glycogen storage capacity. Exercise induced muscle hypertrophy plus doubling the glycogen storage capacity. When the store is full, no more glucose can be accepted. When the fat cells are engorged, they are not only became resistant to insulin but also start breaking down triglycerides to avoid bursting. The fat cells are also releasing inflammatory cytokines.
Insulin is a large molecule but high levels do contribute to increased osmotic pressure. This is even worse in the case of sugars be it glucose, galactose or fructose. Their many hydroxyl groups binds water and interacts with other polar molecules thus increase the blood viscosity and thus blood pressure. Interaction with lactins on blood vessels and linking proteins adds insults.
Fructose can only be metabolized by the liver and be converted into fat only. This causes fatty liver, high LDL, fat tissue growth and insulin resistance.

A lot of good stuff here but too much insulin can not be the root cause of insulin resistance. Serum insulin level, just like serum glucose and insulin resistance are dependent variables and cannot be a root cause. The root cause of all three has got to be an independent variable that was nor a consideration 100 years ago because T2DM and obesity was not a problem until recent times. This could be Fructose consumption or seed oil consumption or something we haven't considered yet. It is not carbohydrates because high carb diets in the past have not caused these problems we see today.
