I was 11, and all my preteen movie star crushes were in black-and-white. My favorites were Cary Grant (my #1!), Erroyl Flynn (actually I think I saw Robin Hood on tv when I was about age 8 -- great film! Lovely costumes!), also Burt Lancaster, Tyrone Power. And I also agree on Montgomery Clift and Laurence Olivier. In more recent years, while enjoying TCM, I have grown even more appreciation for not only the classy looks, but the truth and humanity of their acting, the writers who brought out the characters and stories, the moods of the lighting, et cetera. She said the two of them grew up together and were the best of friends. She also knew Robert Mitchum as well and he too was invited to dinner.
