There is no such thing as the best film of all time or best 20 films of all time, movies are an art form, not a sports team that competes against other teams, they are not in competition with other movies' (except at the box office)because they are all different. You might really love a movie that someone else thinks is a dud. Sports are objective, and there success is determined by scoring more points (or goals) than the other team.. Movies are an art form and all art is subjective, it is all in the eye of the beholder. And they are judged only by the person who watches it either likes it or not.

Great job. I am glad you put "Gone with the Wind" on your list. Present day racial politics should not make people lose appreciation for this classic. It was written back in 1939, when peoples' attitudes were different. It is still an outstanding film.

Great list. I have seen them all. Perhaps a better title for the list would be "20 block busting films to see before you die" or something like that.
There are so many excellent films that even a list of 100 or more might not include some really fine examples.

My top ten list is as follows:
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (philosophic progression of man)
2. Casablanca (self sacrifice for the love of others)
3. Dr. Strangelove (uncontrollability of our technology)
4. Midnight Cowboy (tortuous return to innocence)
5. Empire of the Sun (destruction of innocence by war)
6. Amadeus (many facets of love and hate)
7. No Country for Old Men (unfathomable aspects of crime)
8. American Beauty (disillusionment of married men)
9. Schindler's List (extreme cruelty and love in all people)
10. The Deer Hunter (alienation and destruction of the human soul)
Notice how each of my films is distinctly unique and different from
all the others. I think each makes a special statement about human
experience. I have included the main thematic statement of each
in parentheses.

While often cited for its commentary on the racism of the time it also makes a powerful point on how we once treated those with mental illness or deficiencies. Atticus is the obvious hero of the movie but Boo Radley is the unexpected hero, the mysterious man feared by the local children who saves their lives in the end. Brilliant film making and a wonderful job of telling the story through the eyes of a child. And of course an outstanding performance by Gregory Peck as Atticus.

Raging Bull, A Clockwork Orange, El Topo, Swept Away (original version!), Goodfellas, Casablanca, The Graduate, Boogie Nights, American Graffiti, Battle of Algiers, Amarcord, Medium Cool, Splendor in the Grass, Baby It's You (directed by John Sayles), Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Black Orpheus, The Godfather, are all in my top 20.

You only got 50% for your collection - what about the films of the greatest film director ever - Stanley Kubrick ("A Clockwork Orange") and David Lean's "Dr. Zhivago"? Fine art is not an exact science, so stop playing around with: "Top 20 best movies of all time". Rather say: "My top 20 best movies of all time".

Not a bad list. I don't like Godfather 2, Citizen Kane, or 20001. I would have listed Chariots of Fire, The Man in the Moon, Barabbas, Jaws, The Green Mile, most of the Harry Potter movies but especially the first, fifth, and last; Lord of the Rings, the French version of Lee Miserables with Gerard Depardieu, Glory, A personal favorite Gettysburg, Gladiator, Titanic, The Great Escape, Never Let Me Go, both War of the Worlds movies, Life is Beautiful, Meet Joe Black, Guns of Navarone, Saving Private Ryan, and others, more than 20 for sure.

Really well done. The order does not matter.
The list is well thought out and the brief synopsis of each well written.
I would only disagree with 2 of the picks. Raging bull and Cuckoo's next would not make my list. Either would make a top 30 list honestly.
Some films I would rank higher.
Ben Hur-Has to be top 20!
The good the bad and the ugly
Once upon a time in the west
Dr Zhivago
Longest Day
All about Eve

Great, Great video!!!!!!! I haven't watched the video yet but I would like to nominate 'Splendor In The Grass'. It had a profound affect on a young yet sophisticated audience. Well, it wasn't there. How about an honorable mention? 🙂
Have another thought I'd like to share with you. How about a list of movies that didn't receive a lot of acclaim but were enjoyed by the masses who discovered them. Let me give you two examples: 'Atlantic City', starring Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon (I believe her first movie) and I think it was a Canadian production. Another one was 'Sweet November', starring Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron. Note: Keanu Reeves actually 'sings' in the movie!
Anyway, I'll bet you wind up with close to a thousand suggestions of what movies should have made the top 20 list. I don't believe a nominee has to have a direct connection to a political theme or has to have a global stamp of approval. You do have some 'adventure' movies on the list. In fact, that brings up another possibility, movies regarded as romantic Comedies. For example: I believe Meg Ryan might dominate the list but there are so many of them that bring us to tears despite all the fun in the movie. Some of them are real classics.

The commentator's job to choose best pictures of all times is a difficult one as other significant films cry for attention and there are many. I would like to mention that " Gaslight' starring Ingrid Bergmann and Charkes Boyer is one , "Alfred Hitchcock's 'Spellbound' starring Ingrid Bergmann and Gregory Peck , Ronald Coleman in ' The Double Life' , Alfred Hitchcock's ' The Man who knew Too Much'( James Stewart and Doris Day with iconic song " Quo Sera Sera', Cecil DeMille's Samson and Delailah and The ten Commandments for sheer spectacle and many musicals starring Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly , there is 'Singing in the Rain-The List is endless but one thing is certain .It was golden age for Hollywood from 1930s to 1970s.Who can forget " THe Barefoot Contessa( Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner)?

There are two jewels which wouldn't make the top ten but they are adventures of a kind we don't see anymore from some of then greatest actors of all time. The first is The Train starring the superb Burt Lancaster, which covers the French railway workers efforts to stop the Nazis stealing French art and taking it to Germany. Burt must have been in his fifties but some of his stunts were remarkable. The other is a brilliant film of characters drawn together in adversity with a spectacular ending. The Flight of the Phoenix, with a line up of fantastic actors. Jimmy Stewart, Richard Attenborough, George Kennedy, Ernie Borgnine, Hardy Kruger and Peter Finch. They remade the film, don't bother.

You mention only Hollywood made movies. You left out Foreign films among which include European and Asian movies. For example you left out "Cinema Paradiso" from Italy. You also left out the 1994 movie, "The Lovers" which was the Chinese Legend called "The Butterfly Lovers". 'That story , likely brought back from China by Marco Polo was probably the basis for Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet. How about the 1985 Japanese movie, "Ran", directed, co-written, and edited by Akira Kurosawa. The plot derives from William Shakespeare's King Lear and includes segments based on legends of the daimyō Mōri Motonari. I could list so many more but it would be good if you did it instead of me. I could give you my list of some of the greatest movies some of which you have listed in this video.

As with all these compilations of 'The Best Of'' they can only ever be subjective. I don't have a problem with any of the choices nor the order in which they were placed. I've seen them all and loved every one of them. But I do wonder why the film noir classic 'The Third Man' never gets mentioned. I would rate it as No. 1, but as I previously stated any choice is subjective. A Carol Reed directed movie and written by Graham Greene starring Orson Welles, Joseph Cotton, Trevor Howard and Alida Valli. It's set in Post World War 2 Vienna. An intriguing and suspenseful story. If you've never seen it I recommend you give it a view.

Hate the Godfather series, which glories in vile and parasitic criminals in their "family". "Shawshank" is ridiculously overrated. "Far From The Madding Crowd" is my favourite film.

The reason why they never pick Ben Hur is because it is a movie of faith and Hollywood is prejudiced against movies of faith especially the faith of Jesus Christ and always has been! I don’t think they will ever change, they just seem to be getting worse.

ANY film listing naming the so-called “Best films of all time” should definitely be characterized as inefficient if it doesn’t include “2001, A Space Odyssey” (perhaps THE greatest science fiction film ever made). What about great Western films? What listing of “the greatest” would not include “Once Upon A Time in the West?” or “The Searchers?” These are but a few examples of how subjective these so-called listings are.

Because my wife and I are crazy like this, we each made a list of our favorite films and a list of what we thought were the greatest films. Other comments included many I would have included such as Dr. Zhivago, Singing in the Rain, To Kill a Mockingbird, Black Orpheus, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, 2001 A Space Odyssey, and more. Do a Top 20.2 ... then a Top 20.3 and so on.

Come on, Star Wars is refried Buck Rogers.

1954 Seven Samurai - Did you look outside the USA: like the greatest foreign movie?
1966 The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - Did you pass over westerns, like the best one?
2003 Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King - Did you totally forget about fantasy?

There doesn’t need to be a # 1 Best. I might displace Citizen Kane. Camera and filming techniques were groundbeaking, so it might have been the greatest Then, but some movies have come out since then that outshine it. 12 Men Very good cast and acting but plot lagging behind. Consider Ben Hur, In the Heat Of The Night and The Great Escape. Ok, Ok Godfather is number one….

Interesting list, albeit rather standard. My quick takes… “Star Wars” belongs for its groundbreaking special effects and space-based telling of the hero’s journey. “West Side Story” belongs for its music, but OMG, seeing thugs dance around during a knife fight is cringe and laughable in the original. (Not as bad in Spielberg’s remake, though.) “12 Angry Men” is a bit too unbelievable and preachy for my tastes. “The Sound of Music,” like “West Side Story” has spectacular music, real good performances, and a compelling story (albeit far from faithful to the historical story upon which it is based). Doesn’t hold up, though, for younger folks. “Forrest Gump” is the worst movie on this list. It’s downright awful, pointless, and dreadfully sentimental. Nothing more than a parlor trick of special effects masquerading as profundity. “Sunset Boulevard” is, well… I tried to watch it once but couldn’t get through it. Maybe I’ll try again someday. “On the Waterfront” is good I think overrated. I know the intelligentsia rave about it, but I don’t know why. Brando is good, not great. “The Godfather Part II”: Agreed. Arguably the best sequel ever made. (Other contenders would be “Terminator II” and “Aliens.”) “Psycho” probably deserves a spot on the list for its groundbreaking aspects, although I’m not sure it would impress anybody today. “Vertigo” didn’t impress me much the one time I watched it a couple decades ago. Perhaps I’ll revisit it. “Lawrence of Arabia” is awesome. Well deserved. “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is wonderful and well deserving, although it loses steam for a while in the middle when the inmates break out and go fishing. “The Wizard of Oz”: Yes! I’m amazed at how well this movie holds up. Margaret Hamilton’s performance as the Wicked Witch has never been surpassed in the annals of great movie performances. Equaled, perhaps (although not often) but never bettered. “Gone with the Wind” probably belongs. I only saw it once, about 30 years ago, and I remember liking it more than I expected to. Still, I can’t remember much about it. “Citizen Kane” is wonderful mostly for its technological aspects. It’s weak, however, in interesting characters that the audience is supposed to care about. Still, the macguffin is one of cinema’s greatest, especially when it’s revealed. “Casablanca”: Probably great if you can tolerate Humphry Bogart’s “acting.” OMG, he’s terrible. “Raging Bull” is an all-time great. DeNiro’s best or second-best performance. “Schindler’s List” is great except for its one weak scene -- the shower scene. That was a complete copout. “The Shawshank Redemption” is an all-time great, provided you look past a handful of plot problems. (How did Andy pull the poster up behind him when he was digging in the wall?) “The Godfather” is, yes, the greatest movie of all time. It does everything right. And if “character” is truly the most important aspect of a film, then the best thing about it is that the movie chock full of a good half-dozen or so characters worthy of their own stand-alone movies.

Difficult to rank films of different times and themes. All these films are worth mentioning as among the best. Although it should be called the best American (or English language films). No films by Kurosawa, Fellini or Truffaut is mentioned.

I can't disagree with any of your picks, though like other viewers have noted, there are so many great movies it's hard to leave any out of the Top 20.d Good job.

Interesting to note the high number of selected movies that were initially panned by Pauline Kael on their cinema releases. I've never understood why "The Shawshank Redemption" makes the top of so many lists - the plot seems hopelessly contrived and Andy Dufresne's prison escape is simply not believable. European directors like Ingmar Bergman, Vittorio de Sica and Jean Renoir don't get a look in.

This list is debatable as no explanation given for coming up with this laughable countdown. Is debatable because no film of any language other than English is included. Is unacceptable because as clarification given, who made this crap has never known or seen any international masterpieces. Is unacceptable because as consequence the title of this farce is misleading: it is not : Of All Time. Finally it is not possible to take it seriously, not only for the above written, but because there is 1 Movie that whatever criteria can be chosen for classifying, it does speak an international language in every corner of the globe: The Wizard of Oz!!
And in any language the message is clear : There's not a place like home.!!

Nothing from the Silent era? (movies didn't start in 1927)
No Rear Window?

No Jaws?

This is far too American, or at least English-speaking. What about the great Italians, Visconti, Rocco and His Brothers, Fellini 8 1/2, the French, Truffaut, Jean-Pierre Mellvile, the stunning Le Samourai with Alain Delon, Jean Renoir and what I consider the greatest film ever, Marcel Carné"s Les Enfants du paradis. What about Kurosawa, Rashomon, Ran.India's Satyajit Ray. Too provincial and childish a list.

May I ask, who are you to decide that these are the best films of all time? Awww... c'mon... this list is just YOUR list, YOUR personal choices if I may say so... other people have their own list too, not the same as yours... I also have mine... Maybe just just created this video to attract attention, to "force" other people to watch it, right? Not many people will agree with you, dude... ah- that is also my own opinion, get it?
