Hi Doc, I've seen some research on NAD+/NADH and the potential anti-aging benefits... could you comment on that? and also would it make a difference in whether you take NAD+ or NADH supplements? I also read in some journals that the NAD+/NADH ratio changes as we age but I'm not sure if there is enough research to support that... your input would very much be appreciated!!!

I’m not going to name the manufacturer in case someone thinks I have a vested interest, but this stuff works.

I am curious to know if all that energy is transformed into a manageable non-anxious energy or if it creates more anxious energy for a person that already has anxiety. I've tried a lot of therapies that just increase my anxious energy....although it gave me more energy. I couldn't handle the increased anxiety that came with it, so I stopped trying. This was very helpful information. Thank you.

Young individuals should take Resveratrol at night while older people should take it midday for the greatest effectiveness. If you’re 40 or above, I suggest you to take NMN. Just so you know, Resveratrol is needed to activate the sirtuin genes (which protect our DNA and epigenome), while NMN is needed to fuel the sirtuins. However, resveratrol is difficult to be absorbed by the gut, and the little resveratrol that ends up in the body is broken down very quickly. I take NMN Vitruvin brand for the first time, and so glad it didn't fail me.

Continuous replenishment of NAD promotes the proliferation and survival of fast-dividing cancer cells because elevated NAD levels enhance glycolysis via glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) that require NAD as a co-enzyme (12, 13).Dec 12, 2018

In this episode, Rhonda explains what NAD+, why it is so important for aging and why it declines with age. She discusses some of the popular NAD+ boosters like nicotinamide riboside and nicotinamide mononucleotide, what animal and human data says and some concluding thoughts.
NAD+ is crucial for our survival. Small amounts of it can be obtained in the diet, but the body recycles it to get most of what it needs. Unfortunately, day to day living plus normal aging can cause NAD+ levels to drop. This causes metabolic and mitochondrial dysfunction, as well as many of the other problems and conditions associated with aging like elevated DNA damage. NAD+ levels can go up when we exercise or fast, but NAD+ precursors like nicotinamide riboside and nicotinamide mononucleotide can also increase NAD+ levels in a dose-dependent manner. However, most of the data on NAD+ boosters comes from animal studies. Whether these boosters are effective – and safe – long-term in humans is still a big question.

00:00:00 - Intro.
00:00:48 - Nicotinamide riboside supplementation in humans has been shown to raise NAD+ levels in white blood cells.
00:02:47 - Overview of NAD+
00:05:12 - NAD+ plays an important role in mitigating DNA damage.
00:05:30 - Excessive DNA damage can decrease NAD+ levels by 20-30%.
00:05:42 - Lymphoblastoid cells from centenarians show increased PARP-1 activity.
00:05:55 - Between different species of mammals, higher PARP-1 activity is strongly associated with a longer lifespan.
00:06:36 - Lower organism evidence: A second copy of SIR2, a yeast sirtuin, gave rise to a 30% extension of lifespan.
00:06:43 - NAD+ is required for the activation of sirtuins, which epigenetically regulate a variety of stress response-related processes.
00:07:03 - Energy stress, such as from fasting, exercise, or caloric restriction, increase the NAD+:NADH ratio.
00:07:37 - NAD+ becomes depleted in the brain, heart, and skeletal muscle as we age.
00:08:13 - Decline in NAD+ levels have been associated with many broad categories of clinical disease such as neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, infectious, musculoskeletal.
00:08:48 - NAD+ supplementation has been shown to increase lifespan in models of aging in yeast, worms, and rodents.
00:09:48 - In contrast to de novo synthesis, the predominant source of NAD+ in the body is via the salvage pathway, which is subject to feedback inhibition by nicotinamide.
00:11:56 - Animal studies have shown nicotinamide riboside supplementation is able to increase insulin sensitivity, increase endurance and strength, reverse mitochondrial damage, increase mitochondrial biogenesis, and reverse muscular atrophy.
00:12:30 - Nicotinamide riboside has shown positive effects on the brain in animal, such as increased neurogenesis, decreased cognitive deterioration, decreased amyloid-beta production, and increased synaptic plasticity.
00:12:50 - Nicotinamide mononucleotide has been shown in animals to counter an obesogenic diet, improve markers of metabolic health, improve heart function, and improve cognition and memory.
00:13:10 - A 12-month dietary study of nicotinamide mononucleotide suppressed age-associated body weight gain, enhanced energy metabolism, promoted physical activity, improved insulin sensitivity and plasma lipid profile, and ameliorated eye function and other pathophysiologies in mice.
00:13:47 - NMN has been shown to increase cancer progression in a specialized senescent cell-dependent pancreatic cancer model in mice.
00:15:57 - Plausibility of dosing: comparing animal and human doses.
00:18:05 - Tissue-specific metabolism and bioavailability of NR and NMN.
00:24:32 - Oral administration of NAD produces NR and NMN in the intestine.
00:24:19 - Intravenous administration of NAD, rather than its precursors, shows interesting results: an increase of NAD content and sirtuin expression in the hypothalamic region of the brain.
00:26:15 - Human study #1: 250mg of NR + 50 mg pterostilbene increased blood NAD+ levels by 40%, while a double dose (500 mg NR + 100 mg pterostilbene) increased blood NAD+ levels by 90%. Additionally, there was a decrease in blood pressure, and ALT (a marker for liver health).
00:27:12 - Human study #2: 500mg NR twice daily for six weeks increased NAD+ levels in white blood cells by 60%.
00:29:08 - Concluding thoughts and recap.

I've been taking a low doseage of NMN for a couple of weeks now. I started with 100mg in the morning and 50mg at night on the first day, then 50mg the next morning. I hadn't been expecting any results for at least a week or so. About 2 hours after taking that second morning dose I went out shopping and was astonished to find my legs wanting to walk faster and faster, as if under their own volition. I've not walked like that in almost 7 years.
I've had a number of strokes and suffer numerous symptoms, manly to do with inhibitted activity levels.
My mind is foggy most of the time and the NMN has not done anything for that, but I certainly feel the difference in energy levels, it's really amazing.
I also found that after a few days I had to stop the NMN for a couple of days as it seemed to be making me feel more groggy, so I now take it 2 days on, 2 days off.
The brand I'm using is an American Brand called RevGenetics, and it's called Advanced NMN, in capsule form. I know it's also available in powder form too. It's quite expensive even in capsule form and would cost the earth to take it regularly at the doseages recommended in this video, but I can assure anyone that the effects at the doseage I am on are truly amazing.

Thank you for the video. I have been taking Tru Nigen (NR) for about two months at 350 mgs. What I have noticed is a slight increase in energy, and focus. I feel like I have also lost some body fat. However, I stay in Ketosis and use intermittent fasting 4 days a week. However, I plan to stop taking it once my bottle runs out because of the information presented in this video. I don't see the benefits outweighing the potential downsides. Thanks again.

I've been doing lots of reading and this is by far the most in depth breakdown I've seen on NR/NMN yet. While I am really impressed with anecdotal evidence of NAD supplements, I am erring on the side of caution. Personally, I'm going to hold off on purchasing supplements until more clinical trials come out so we know proper dosages and whether or not this even carries over from mice to humans. Anyone else feel the same way? If it turns out this is safe, easily replicates in humans etc then I will consider supplementing.

Great video Rhonda!
I was wondering if it makes sense to take a NR/NMN supplement while also ingesting carbs/protein/fat.
As you also explain in the video, the NAD/NADH ratio in the cell increases when fasting/CR/exercising.
Then such a NAD boosting supplement would need to be taken in a fasted state wouldn't it?
Or is the pathway of either NR/NMN supplement somehow separated from the metabolic pathway when a cell is in a fasted state?

Many thanks for this detailed walk through! I think correctly identified this is all at an early stage of discovery - perhaps usefully highlighting the key importance of NAD in the cell energy economy, but (to my mind) now pointing to the need to reduce NAD depletion. A whole food plant based (WFPB) diet being inherently low inflammation - perhaps best indicated by White Blood Cell count: https://nutritionfacts.org/video/what-is-the-ideal-white-blood-cell-count/
Also points to a need to remove senescent cells regularly - probably by a number of 5 day water fasts over the year. Lastly - not a bad shout to pay attention to Vit B3 status - if this is insufficient NAD production is likely to be throttled... Thanks Rhonda for this review - appreciated!

Very interesting episode. Fantastic work!
One question comes to mind:
We know that resveratrol is a SIRT-1 activator but are there identified compounds that increase PARP-1 activation (for us with non-supercentenarian genes)?
I supplement with NR and resvetral. If there's a PARP-1 specific activator compound, it might be an interesting addition to the mix.

Rhonda, I've heard Dr. Sinclair say he takes 1gram of NMN daily but in reading his book and listening to multiple interviews I'm not sure on the best time metabolically to dose and if there is a "minimum effective" single dose. Currently, I take 250 mg, 3 to 4 times per day sublingually but it occurred to me that each one of these single doses may be below the threshold of effectiveness...

Great summary of the topic! I was desperately trying to find actual human published data about NAD+ decreasing with age, but other then the two studies you mentioned, couldn't find much. In those two studies though, sertuin activity actually didn't decrease; there was significant difference between men and women, and the NAD+ decrease was extremely small (vs. the 50% David Sinclair commonly mentions), and in fact looking at the graph, it was quite variable, with some 30 year olds having the same level as 60+.. .so I really wonder if the marked "decrease" in NAD+ everybody goes on and on about is actually a comparison of an active 20 year old vs. a sedentary, unhealthy 50-60 year old; ie. isn't the life style more important than the horrendously expensive NMN and NR supplements?

Very interesting. From your video's from Satchin Panda I learned the benefits of time restricted eating regaring insulin sensitivity, sleep, cardiovascular aspect etcetera. Do you have any information whether NAD+ increases also with time restricted feeding and which window of eating you should use? Or is there only information about fasting and increasing NAD+ and if that is the case how long you should fast for increasing NAD+.

I’ve been taking 750mg of NMN + 500mg resveratrol for 6 months. I’m 61 and in good, but far from great shape. My muscle stamina and overall energy are way higher than when I began. I also have noticeable reduction in inflammation in my leg that was damaged in an accident and where it had been chronic for many years. The reduction in inflammation alone keeps me on it, but feeling a lot better is great too.

So what are the best relative food sources of NMN? And the best relative food sources of Nicotinamide Riboside? Are some of these foods significantly higher in their capacity to boost NAD levels?
Hoping to get it aboard the food supply so there is the safety of letting the body metabolize as needed.

Wow talk about informative video thank you , I’ve been taking a product which contains Nicotinamide 250 mg twice a day with botanical mix alpha lipoic acid vitamin c and zinc which apparently works on the salvage pathway you have described.
The company claim that Despite all the hype surrounding the use of precursors such as NR and NMN to boost NAD+, our cells actually make nearly all of the NAD+ they need using NAM ,as you described in your presentation.
They go on to say That “as we get older, levels of the NAMPT enzyme are known to decline and the salvage pathway becomes inefficient at converting NAM into NAD+. In fact this is known to be one of the main reasons that cellular NAD+ declines as we get older. This means that if we want to make sure that NAM doesn’t build up in the cell, then we must make sure that NAMPT and the salvage pathway are working optimally, like they were in young cells. Rather than simply trying to fix falling NAD+ levels by putting more raw material into the cell (using precursors) the product is designed to fix the underlying reasons why NAD+ is actually declining, namely the failing salvage pathway.
I am however concerned of the effect of Nicotinamide on sirt2, they claim however that Nicotinamide does not effect sirtuins if it doesn’t hang around for a long time when the salvage pathway is working properly . I just wondered what your thoughts are on this. Again many thanks for your very detailed video

Hello, I have one problem taking NMN. Hope you can help with your knowledge 😃🙏 I take 0,5 - 1 gramm Resveratrol in Oliveoil, 0,5 gramm of NMN and 1 gramm of TMG. I started taking TMG as I noticed, that after about 3 days I feel a certain pressure on my heart or let's say on the left side of the breast and I feel like having higher blood pressure. Then I stop the life extension treatment and everything is fine again. When I take only Resveratrol or only TMG this phenomenon doesn't appear. I thought with taking TMG this would stop, but that's not the case. After starting again the same reaction appears. I bought NMN even from Prohealth. The same thing. The dose is really not that high, so I am wondering as the studies don't have such results. I am 45, 1,75 m and about 83 kg. So what's your opinion on that? Thanks in advance, Thomas

I have been taking 300 mg a day of NAD+ for almost a month. Took about three weeks before I started noticing a difference. It is very subtle but that might be a good thing. There's a fine line between feeling like doing something or not. I have had chronic fatigue for all of my adult life. I am 68 now. Been looking for the magic pill for that long. Getting ready to order my second bottle and I would recommend to anyone with low energy levels or just to possibly live longer. No one I've talked to has heard of this stuff. The intestinal barrier serves as a gatekeeper to the human body. The loss of the health and integrity of this barrier influences multiple aspects of human health – including cardiometabolic function, neurological health, behavior, and more – in surprising and possibly unexpected ways. One of these ways involves lipopolysaccharide, or LPS, a bacterial product that arises in the intestine, and its interaction with far distal tissues and organs via the induction of immune mediators.
Dr. Rhonda Patrick was the keynote speaker for the Metabolic Health Summit, held May 5 – 8, 2022, in Santa Barbara, California. Her presentation described the role that intestinal permeability and bacterial products play in aging, inflammation, and chronic disease.

So does this mean taking fish oil capsules 15 minutes after a meal reduces IP because the Omega 3 destroys the LPS peak at one hour? (or something 😅)?

1. I bet LPS is different depending on gut bacteria, also you can add fiber to a diet and increase inflammation in that person -> some people with good gut bacteria will do fine with a ton of sat fat diet and other people will feel shitty.
2. Omega 3s should be taken from pickled fish , i bet any type of heat will destroy the omega 3s that we need. Same goes to animal meat/fat ( especially bone marrow and brain ) but that's a different story. Also AGE's will go through the roof when you cook meat, i'm pretty sure we need to eat it as raw as possible, just like most choline remains in a very soft cooked egg.
3. I think Dr. Zsofia Clemens is the leading entity when it comes to intestinal permeability and she is the leader of the "group" that uses peg400, she would answer a lot of the questions.

I think it important to try to assess relative nutrient values of particular foods by trying to determine prehistoric evolutionary biologic conditions we have been adapted to over countless thousands of years. Was the beef we ate 30 thousand years ago grass fed, more than grain fed? Seasonality of grazing most likely had cattle eating grass much more than any grain, so we would very likely be better adapted to the complex systems of eating/metabolism of wild grass-eating beef cattle. And since protein poisoning seems to be an important part of how we evolved, prehistoric hunting populations were likely adapted to eating fat beef whenever possible rather than always just eating the leanest cuts of meat. And, eating lots of root carbs as well, to balance the 'rabbit starvation' effects that they had learned needed such balance to keep them healthiest. IMHO

The hard to find answer is what kind of OTC Omega 3 is actually effective?? I've been taking Krill and recently learned that isn't going to meet the minimum bar but I also hear that most OTC Omega 3 supplements offered on the market are either rancid or contain dosages which aren't effective. If one can't get a doctor's prescription for Omega 3, then where should we be investing our dollars?

Rhonda.. Do you think it's unwise to have high levels of glutathione / antioxidants daily?
Increasingly there are warnings due to pushing the balance to far towards antioxidants to the detriment of vital oxidant related signaling.
The 'youtube space' is crying out for some wisdom on this underrepresented and misunderstood balance.

No mention that Omega 3's DHA and EPA at least, induce the cellular housecleaning of Autophagy. That may be the main reason for the health benefits of Omega 3's. Taking Fish Oil every day may not be the optimum way to health. I would suggest that Omega 3 consumption weekly may be better.

(Super)Centenarians having very low markers of inflammation and even bloodsugar. It might be good to note that this has little or nothing to do with lifestyle and diet. Seems to be almost entirely genetic. Simply said: just better (DNA)repair and bulletproof immune system carries you to extreme longevity.
Whole grains lower inflammation. Sure, if there isn't any glyphosate there. US? Choose your grains wisely. Here in europe where I live almost everyone eats grains without any problem. Alot of oats, barley, rye, spelt and not so much wheat. Higher Omega3 and Vit.D is again lower inflammation and autoimmune issues. Translates to better immune system, health and longevity.

Interesting talk. One thing you claim "low Omega-3 intake from seafood" as a significant cause of preventable death, while intimating that plant sources are not adequate sources. But your citation doesn't deal with the question of sources of Omega-3's and their effect on mortality. Rather, after the 1st use of the word Omega-3, the 2009 research paper puts the word "seafood" in parenthesis - kind of like using the word protein and putting the word meat after.

There are studies to show that when fat and carbohydrates are combined there is an increased fat storage over when they are isolated. Insulin opens up the key that allows the fat to go in.
I say this because ask yourself what foods in nature exist that have close to or equal proportions of fat and carbohydrates and protein? The answer is milk something that is designed for growing bodies and that a lot of people become intolerant to the sugar of overtime.
There is no food in nature other than this that intended to for us to be combining these macro nutrients. you can find protein and carbs you can find protein and fat you cannot find carbs and fat and you can definitely not find all three in close to equal proportions outside of milk.
Cashews and pistachios would be the closest and they are not close to being equal in ratio.
As much as omnivore is logical we don't understand the interactions that the stomach has to deal with at the same that it's never had to deal with before in the history of humans.
Add to that all of the fake junk food on top of it.

The presentation refers to Pendyala S. Walker JM. Holt PR A high-fat diet is associated with endotoxemia that originates from the gut. Gastroenterology. 2012;142(5):1100-1101 e2. doi l 0.1053/j gastro 2012.01.034. I searched for this and could not find out what they considered a Western Diet (High-Fat.) This was likely a diet high in inflammatory seed oils which would trigger those results. It might not be high fat that is the culprit, but the type of fat.

04:14: Endurance athletics and lactate testing
06:10: Doping in endurance sports: why cycling is not really clean
08:22 Training adaptations and MCT transporters
10:34 The cori cycle in the liver turns lactate back into glucose. The brain can use lactate directly as a fuel.
11:43 Longevity has no clinical trial.
13:42 Two interventions that offer longevity in animal models: fasting and Rapamycin. Both downregulate mTOR and both support autophagy.
15:35 Rapamycin is used for immune suppression in patients who have had organ transplants.
25:02 Dr. Attia does not use telomere’s as a marker of ageing since so many other things can influence it.
26:48 We need a blood test that measures some sort of signature autophagy.
28:46 Fasting is the single most potent tool in our toolbox of nutrition.
32:53 There are 50 different fasting regimens called intermittent fasting and we have no way to rank them or customize them to people’s goals.
34:20 Every gram of glycogen moves with 3 to 4 grams of water. The water goes into the plasma first and then out again as your body tries to conserve sodium.
41:58 Methionine levels drop quickly in fasting. Leucine levels remain about the same even 7 days in.
43:54 Research found that T4 and T3 decreased in the first 3 days of a fast, but leveled out after that.
45:35 In a fasted state, your body upregulates the enzyme that converts T4 into reverse T3.
50:33 At the end of a fast, Dr. Attia has very low testosterone, but experiences little to no symptoms or reduction in strength.
55:53 The literature on NAD is confusing.
01:00:24 Fasting is the single most important tool for treating metabolic disease and should be a part of any protocol.
01:04:09 People who do not do well on a ketogenic diet may have issues with the enzymes that regulate ketogenesis.
01:07:14 Metformin has a possible use as a longevity agent.
01:11:59 Berberine and Metformin go after the same pathway and probably should not be taken together.
01:21:05 Dr. Attia’s morning routine: He gets up early, listens to a lesson and meditates using apps 10% Happier or Waking Up.

I found this very interesting. I had a full thyroid panel (including RT3) as well as sex hormones (including Testosterone) after a 24hour fast and had the same results as Dr. Attia. (Not sure about the specific ratios though) This resulted in my Doc putting me on desiccated thyroid meds and told me I needed testosterone. Mind you, I did have many symptoms related to hypothyroidism. I’m interested to find out what my levels might be without fasting.

Thanks for the great information!! I have a question; I have done 5 long fasts(5-7days each)this year, actually "fast mimicking diets following Valter Longo's macronutrient formula. I usually eat "keto",consuming 30-50carbs/day.While I recognize low protein is key, following Longo's formula on carbs doubles my carb consumption and , in turn, reduces
my level of ketosis. Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work!

Mike I have a question for you.
If someone fasted for a prolonged period of time (let's say 3 days) before doing a PRP session, would the higher concentration of endogenous stem cells from the fast aid in the PRP treatment? Could this be like a very low cost stem cell therapy alternative?
Thank you so much!

This is a great video, you guys really break it down scientifically, I just know that it works. I have been doing Intermittent fasting for 22 months. The first month I was eating twice a day in a small window but I have been eating only One Meal A Day (OMAD) for the past 21 months. I feel amazing, there are times on special occasions that I eat a 2nd meal but it only happens 2-3 times a month. I lost all of my weight (30 pounds) in the first 90 days and I have kept it off ever since. I started OMAD to loss fat but now that I hit my goal weight I continue to do OMAD for autophagy.
It was interesting to hear what changes you guys have felt during fasting. I also get cold easily now then ever before. Some other changes are; I dont require as much sleep (6 vs 8hrs) my hair and nails grow much faster. My skin is slightly more dry (which I didnt really noticed until you said it) way more energy, way more focused and obviously Im in the best shape of my life.

Thank you for this video. I’ve just started intermittent fasting and I’m trying to find more information on fasting with hypothyroid conditions. Here you talk briefly about T3 and T4 but I’m still not sure if fasting is good for me. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s when I was 7 and have been taking meds for 31 years. If there are any references to this that anyone has come across, I would love to know about them.
It seems that around 19 hours of fasting I start to get light headed and very weak and am forced to eat something, I’m not sure if this is a result of my thyroid.
Thanks.

Hi Mike!
Greetings from Poland! Your materials, as usual, are great. Concise, wise, helpful.
Could you please try to find someone who's in curing neuropathy with fast/autophagy? I've been trying to spot such person or to find some materials (research, data), but there is so little on that topic.
Neuropathy is a serious problem of about 15% people suffering from diabetes. I've diverted diabetes T2 after 12 years and all of he symptoms are gone but peripherial neuropathy is still a major issue for me. And for so many others as well.
Anyway, thanks for your effort so far!

-----------------------------------------Show Notes--------------------------------------
05:07 Sauna research indicates that when your heartrate is about 140, you are in the right temperature for cardiovascular benefit and releasing heat shock proteins.
08:19 With age comes senescent cell accumulation; cells that do not perform their essential functions, do not self-destruct and effect surrounding cells.
09:06 If you can get rid of senescent cells in your body, you get a 10 or 20% life extension.
10:50 A senescent cell intervention study caused most senescent cells to go away.
15:30 Autophagy has a senolytic effect.
16:32 If there is low autophagy activation in the body, lifespan is shorter.
19:10 DNA expresses itself differently when autophagy is upregulated.
20:30 Stem cell activation increases in the refeeding stage after a fasted state.
22:15 In mice, it takes at least a 2-day water fast to induce autophagy.
26:30 If there are a lot of nutrients in the environment, cells grow and procreate. In cancer, this is not a good thing.
27:10 If there are no nutrients in the environment, cells get good at recycling/scavenging and hunkers down to protect its DNA so it cannot break.
28:44 The antioxidant theory of ageing has been debunked.
30:33 A constant feeding state stimulates cancer growth through upregulation of growth hormone IGF1 and insulin.
33:36 Testing can show where patients are on the longevity path.
36:24 Overconsuming protein by over 20 to 30% in your diet, you get increased IGF-1.
37:39 A good IGF-1 level, based on Blue Zone cultures, is around 150 for mid-life.
42:14 If you restrict methionine in mice, they live longer.
46:05 AMPK can be activated through Metformin, berberine or the Chinese herb jiaogulan.
48:02 Rapamycin works well to suppress TOR in animal models.
51:22 NAD is the rocket fuel needed for sirtuins to do their job to protect DNA. Fasting increases NAD.
56:17 We don’t know if taking NAD increases lifespan or if it lowers cardio-metabolic risk.
01:00:35 Your DNA gets methylated as you age. When DNA is methylated, certain sections of DNA code are turned off and your cell does not do what it is supposed to do.
01:02:50 CPG sections of DNA are highly correlated with the ageing process, if they are methylated. It is a better marker for ageing than telomeres.
01:03:59 When your DNA at the CPG sites is methylated, it is irrevocable.
01:04:40 Ageing tests, from Elysium and myDNAge examine CPG sites.
01:08:35 The DNA clock was reversed by 2 ½ years.
01:13:07 Paradoxically, studies show that increases in growth hormone leads to longevity benefits, yet high growth hormone is disaster from a longevity standpoint.
01:17:40 DHEA for men is probably safe with a recommended dosage of 25 to 50 ml. DHEA has a positive effect upon the immune system and helps with certain markers of cardiovascular function in men.
01:21:37 Low levels of DHEA increase your risk of all cause mortality.
01:23:12 Fasting mimicking, to a higher extent than fasting, increases mucosal stem cell activity.

If a drug is strong enough to help you, it's strong enough to hurt you. I just want to be healthy now. For me that means no sugar, no alcohol, no dairy, no wheat, plus intermittent fasting. Also, eat with pleasure and a grateful heart. Spend time in nature. Hope 2020 is a year of "good vision" for the planet and all its inhabitants after recent events.

the last video you did with Jeff is actually one of my favorites of yours, so i had high expectations for this one.
i’m glad to say that it didn’t disappoint ;) .
So kudos to you both. Many thanks!
i’m currently 115lbs (177cm tall) and i want to return to my previous 150..160lbs. It is pretty hard to gain muscle mass doing intermittent fasting, in deed, so i am considering going from 3 meals, to 4 .
that would mean i would have to forgo the 12hour no-food window..
Judging from what you guys talked about, scientific data/confirmation on the benefits of that 12hour window are still pretty scarce.. I didn’t know that. i thought it had been scientifically shown that it really has benefits.
A 2 to 3 days fasting once a month might be a good idea, then, i feel.
Still..i’m currently 4.5% fat..so fasting is very tasking on my muscle tissues..
what do you reckon ?
thanks again Mike,
cheers from Portugal

Recently watched Dr. Mercola where he said that we should be cautious with fasting due to toxins that are being released from fat storage where they accumulate into blood stream. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you

Amazing video, Jeff is a wonderful and intelligent guy.
I'd really like to see Ted Naiman's response to Jeff regarding protein, would love to see that chat.
Also importantly I'm very curious to know how Jeff, as a thinner guy, approaches the subject of gaining muscle or simply working out, or perhaps he prefers not to thereby having a younger body and mind for longer?
It's really ultra key for keto dieters who are losing muscle mass. There are many recommendations of 2g of protein per kg per day.. but how to fit that in a 4 hour feeding window? The body would have trouble processing 150g+ of protein so muscle gain is extremely difficult. And using a long window we hear time and again over-stimulates mTOR
Do you know of anyone willing to put forward a strategy to balance Protein, mTOR, and muscle growth (or at least prevent muscle wasting) while not overstimulating mTOR / IGF1 which we hear all the time is the big bad move in the longevity game.
For example:
Goals-wise I'm keto for inflammation reduction (it works) and fast for autophagy and I feel great afterwards which leads me to conclude it's also anti-inflammatory. But I've lost my 10kg of fat and I'm losing muscle.. following Naiman's philosophy I should just eat tons of protein.. which is exactly what I had planned until this vid which yet again drove home hard the IGF1 message extremely eloquently.
If feeding window (or the 20 hour fast out of it) is the solution then is there a way to consume 150g in 4 hours without the body just saying "too much protein to process properly let's convert some into glucose and dump a load".
I was thinking 3 day fast (starting keto adapted it's quite intense) at the end of each month to help cleanse the mTOR mess from too much protein during the month. Maybe a 2 day fast mid month also.
Possibly choose a 'big work out' day once a week where I forgo the feed window rule.
Seems quite a 'pulsatile' compromise.. although the 150g a day in a small feed window is the biggest question.. is this wise? Logistically seems possible but idk how the body would process it (apparently body can process 60g after workout.. maybe start: Take 30g protein with keto lunch, then 2h30 later 15g EAA then work out and 60g whey isolate immediately after, then 45g (eg: 150g meat) in a meal after an hour, close window. )
Is this wise or am I messing with IGF-1 and mTOR too much?
Trouble is in a nutshell: I'm 37 and getting old.. keto is perfect to reduce inflammation but I'm losing muscle mass, a solution is high protein a la Naiman but INF-1 and mTOR are so important especially hearing Jeff reiterate and further embue some very wise mTOR lore.
Final idea for discussion:
Feed window on alternate days (eg: 4hr window except 3 training days a week where there is 8hr window where you could have 150g protein starting 30g in the morning workout after 2 hrs then 60g, then 2 hrs 30g 2hrs 30g..
Then next day, the alternate, back to 4 hr window with lower protein (BUT HOW MUCH can you take on a rest day in 4 hours on keto?)
We don't hear so much about a 2 day oscillation detailed in interviews, occasionally though.
This stuff is not for bodybuilding per se, it's so fasters and keto community can stay healthy and avoid muscle loss.. it happens!
Any thoughts? Or links greatly appreciated.
:)

Could you talk about criticisms of the blue zone study? The main one being that it cherry picks these zones. There are other long lived populations that don't eat 10% protein. Hong Kong being an example here. And the other criticism was that some of the zones weren't really plant-based. Okinawa being the most egregious example.
Another thing, Americans don't eat 30% protein. We eat 10-16% protein.

One of the most effective ways to restore or eliminate senescent cells is by replenishing our bodies with stabilized ROS/RNS. They have several roles in the body, one being cellular messengers and our bodies built-in method to detect repair or replace damaged cells.

When they say that a certain percentage of your diet should be made up of protein, are they presuming that you’re eating three meals a day in a standard eating pattern? What if you only eat one meal that day? Is it really a matter of the percentage or the amount, and if it’s the amount, what amount would they say is ideal?

I think the focus on mtor and igf-1 is from a place of not looking at the body as a system. I enjoyed this guy’s perspective and I appreciate that he stressed that they are still important.
Valter Longo annoys me greatly. Fasting is obviously superior to fmd and he focusing on processes that are simply not being utilized by the body correctly. You shouldn’t want to down regulate mtor or reduce igf-1, the goal should be to direct it to metabolically active tissue! Get in a lift in the am or anytime before breaking a fast and you will do just that!
Same with metformin, it’s just doing exactly what your body does after exercise. To me it’s simple, lift before eating and walk after.
Personally the lifting part is easy, the walking I neglect, but I think the lifting is more important in the context of growth factor sequestration.
Enjoyed the discussion as always! Thank you, Mike!

Regarding vitamin C, it looks like you guys are ignoring the fact that a primate the size of a human would make 10 grams of vitamin C and we make none. I'm 71 and haven't had a cold or the flu for over 40 years. All that time I've taken at least 6 grams daily, but often much more. Also, no one ever guesses me to be over 50, so I'm not about to shun C!

I watched this a 2nd time. startin 50mg DHEA each morning with my bp med cuz i'm 54 and it can only help i think. ordered myDNAge :) Did my longest fast about a month ago - 3.5 days. He mentions blue zones consuming only 10% protein, but these 'blue zones' have been debunked, not only by researchers but by people who live or have lived in these areas. How long do you think you are gonna live, anyway? If you only eat 10% of calories as protein, you're likely gonna be weak in old age. I don't think 10% protein facilitates 'strongevity'. Otherwise, a wonderful interview and discussion.
