I was there live at the first performance on December 30th (there are three performances), and it was breathtaking. It’s something you absolutely have to experience live at least once. The conductor and the orchestra delivered such an incredible performance that it left me speechless several times. Greetings from Austria. When one watches them individually, one can clearly see their love, and dedication to their art, and it is so lovely, I often cry in appreciation. I am an old lady who lives alone, and relies on these wonderful presentations and operas and reading and listening, to keep me motivated, alive and most grateful. Such a glorious way to begin a new year. And I loved his message--we all are beings on the same planet, all trying to make lives for ourselves the best we can. Tragically, greed and the lust for power has destroyed our humanity. I pray for peace and kindness in the year ahead. It is long past time for us to recognize that it is not the equally downtrodden immigrant who also yearns for a better life that is making our lives difficult but the selfish people at the top, hoarding millions and billions of dollars while others starve, die from lack of access to health care and sleep in doorways. I have heard / seen EVERY Vienna Phil New Year's Concert since 1 January 1984, when regular broadcasts started here. Ringing in the new year would absolutely be incomplete without it. Through all the craziness of the last 41 years (wow, am I really that old? 🤷‍♂🤣), these concerts has been one thing we can count on, anticipate, and thrill to every year. Some parts are so soothing, some so vibrant. As a lover of classical music, and particularly of the Viennese waltz and polka genres, I consider this program one of the most inspiring and revitalizing of recent years—a true breath of fresh air in a tradition that sometimes runs the risk of becoming overly predictable. First and foremost, it is impossible not to highlight the absolute dominance of the Strauss family and their peers in the program. Johann Strauss II, the “Waltz King,” appears frequently, bringing pieces such as the overture to the operetta Indigo und die vierzig Räuber, the Fledermaus-Quadrille (op. 363), the elegant Diplomaten-Polka (op. 448), the romantic Rosen aus dem Süden (op. 388), and the exotic Egyptischer Marsch (op. 335). These works evoke the splendor of imperial Vienna, with their flowing melodies, infectious rhythms, and a sophistication that elevates dance into high art. Rosen aus dem Süden, for example, is an absolute gem: derived from the operetta Das Spitzentuch der Königin, it exudes nostalgia and passion, with themes that seem to bloom like roses under the Mediterranean sun. Hearing it performed by the Vienna Philharmonic is always a transcendental experience, and in this edition, under Nézet-Séguin, one can imagine an even more vibrant and nuanced interpretation. Johann II’s brothers and father also shine: Josef Strauss with Frauenwürde (op. 277) and the Olive Branch Waltz (op. 207, also known as Friedenspalmen), Eduard Strauss with the fast and effervescent Brausteufelchen (polka schnell, op. 154), and Johann Strauss I with the gallop Der Karneval in Paris (op. 100). Josef, often overshadowed by his more famous brother, reveals his poetic sensitivity here: Frauenwürde, composed in the context of early women’s movements, sounds like a subtle hymn to female dignity, while Olive Branch conveys a serene melancholy, evoking olive branches as a symbol of postwar peace. Eduard, in turn, injects pure energy with his polka, a “little effervescent devil” that makes the audience want to dance in their seats. Contemporaries such as Joseph Lanner (Malapou-Galoppe, op. 148), a precursor of the Viennese waltz, Carl Michael Ziehrer (Donausagen, waltz op. 446, with its folkloric echoes of the Danube), and Franz von Suppé (the overture to Die schöne Galathée, full of mythological humor) reinforce the genre’s roots. And we must not forget Hans Christian Lumbye, the “Strauss of the North,” with the highly entertaining Københavns Jernbane-Damp-Galop, which imitates the sound of a steam train—a brilliant programmatic piece celebrating the industrial modernity of the 19th century, complete with whistles and accelerations that bring smiles to listeners’ faces. But what makes this concert truly memorable is the inclusion of two women composers, a historic milestone for the Neujahrskonzert. Josephine Weinlich, a 19th-century Viennese composer who founded Europe’s first all-female orchestra, has her Sirenen Lieder (polka mazur, op. 13, arranged by W. Dörner) performed for the first time. Light and seductive, like the song of sirens, this piece represents not only a rediscovery but also an act of historical justice within a traditionally male repertoire. Even more impactful is the presence of Florence Price, an African-American composer (1887–1953), with her Rainbow Waltz (also arranged by W. Dörner). Price, whose work has been rediscovered in recent years, brings a touch of American romanticism to the Viennese ballroom: her waltz, originally written for piano, radiates color and optimism, like a rainbow after a storm. Ad ogni modo ho voluto rivedere subito il concerto che avevo dovuto lasciare nel canale italiano. In due parole: sono stupefatta. Energia a mille, ottima scelta dei brani, spumeggiante debutto. Io sono parecchio traballante nell' ascolto della musica classica, ma avevo un padre il cui sogno era avere una bacchetta in mano per dirigere un' orchestra. Appassionatissimo quindi, mi domando cosa avrebbe detto, lui che amava questa musica viennese interpretata in modo frizzante. A dir poco sarebbe saltato per la casa, felice. Io sono entusiasta si questo concerto. I Wiener Philarmoniker sono rodati e bravissimi, ma hanno trovato un ragazzo entusiasta, esplosivo per il contesto. Con la Radetzky March sono conquistata totalmente. Bel modo di vivere in tranquillità con le mie cuffie il fine giornata. It was a masterful coup: while being energised & entertained by the new melodies, it increases the anticipation for the highlight of the concert; and he certainly didn't disappoint! The Blue Danube & Radetzky March are always the highlight, and I'm sure the audience left the hall energised afterward. I'm not sure how the new 'flavours' sat with traditionalists (like myself), expecting to hear the familiar Strauss fare; but it was refreshing & energetic. Nu pentru că dirijorul este homosexual sau diferit, ci pentru că a mutat centrul de greutate de la muzică la sine. Iar acest concert nu este despre ego, identitate sau șoc vizual, ci despre continuitate, stil și discreție. Concertul de la Viena nu e locul pentru gesturi intime, simbolice sau demonstrative, indiferent cine le face și din ce motive. Acolo, dirijorul ar trebui să fie un mediator între partitură și public, nu un performer al propriei persoane. Când apar: gesturi care nu au legătură cu muzica, o estetică ce atrage atenția asupra corpului și nu asupra sunetului, momente care distrag publicul de la Strauss, atunci da, evenimentul alunecă spre spectacol, iar asta mie nu-mi place. Nu cred în ideea că „tradiția trebuie provocată ca să fie vie”. Unele tradiții trăiesc tocmai pentru că nu cer să fie reinventate, ci respectate. If I had to offer a simple critique, I'd say their biggest flaw was that they were simply flawless—too perfect, too magnificent, too exquisite. I felt his immense energy and passion; he completely understood the orchestra members' abilities and personalities, and his ability to interpret the composer's musical style with such clarity, humanity, humor, rigor, and precision was inevitable! He could express almost every aspect of human philosophy through his conducting gestures and facial expressions, reaching a pinnacle of artistry!
