One of my Dad's favorite films was The Seven Samurai (TSS). He'd seen it while stationed in Japan and brought it up throughout my childhood but it was never shown on TV and this was way before VHS. Fast forward to the early 90's and I'm now in the AF myself stationed in Okinawa with my family. Okinawa's video store business was booming and very competitive. While visiting one of my favorite stores, I found TSS to rent. It was a double VHS boxed set and bringing it home, I finally found out why Dad loved it so much. It truly is an unforgettable epic film. Not long after, the video store announced it was going out of business and all videos and laserdiscs would go on sale at 9am the next Saturday. Knowing how popular the store was and how great their collection was, I showed up at 6am and still had about 50 people ahead of me. I wanted TSS for Dad. When the doors opened and the line moved forward, I was finally able to see inside and located TSS on the shelf. So many people walked down that aisle. So many people stopped in the general area. A few actually picked it up and looked at it. Finally, I got inside and quickly maneuvered to its aisle. Someone has just set it down and I swooped it up. I guess the hardest part was not telling Dad about my find and bringing it back to the states with us while on leave and giving it to him. What wasn't hard was sitting with Dad and watching TSS together. In fact, we watched it 3 times while we were home. The wall of Dad's den is now full of DVD's and Blu Ray's including TSS but holding a place of honor on the shelf is that original boxed set of The Seven Samurai.

I love Toshiro Mifune so much, it's unreal and it hurts a little, kinda like stendhal syndrome - probably this mix of swagger, unpredictability and vulnerability. My favourites with him are Sanjuro and Samurai Rebellion. Also Kikuchiyo in Seven Samurai is just one of a kind...did he invent the blueprint for the weirdly super-energetic anime-stereotype? Lol...mabye.
I love the fact that Tatsuya Nakadai is still alive, and with us. There's something about these actors and movies from that era...no wonder people still enjoy these gems.

Although "Red Beard" is not a samurai film, it is grounded in Kurosawa’s signature tone while also bearing a kind of “sabi” reminiscent of Mizoguchi’s aesthetic. In that sense, it stands apart from his other works, and I personally regard it as a masterpiece in which Kurosawa reached a new creative frontier.

I am surprised Inagaki's Chushingura did not make the list. The film is iconic for big dollar cinema (at the time) with a long list of stars and amazing costume and set design. Of course the tale of the 47 loyal samurai has been told many times.

Besides "Twilight Samurai" (8) and "The Hidden Blade" (3), don't forget the equally beautiful and poignant third member of Yoji Yamada's trilogy, "Love and Honor." All of these stories are taken from, or inspired by, the short stories of Shuhei Fujisawa. The way that the protagonists preserve their love and honor when it is threatened by misfortune and cruelty is not to be missed!

Seven samurai is a samurai movie where the chief protagonist isn't even a samurai but a wannabe. True also for kagemusha. I surmised it's called as such for the sword and the code that bound (or not) its wielders. Without the sword, they are war, gangster, politics, crime, westerns movies etc.

Seven Samurai is one of the greatest movies e v e r ! I like also the new Zatoichi, the Blind Samurai, and the absurdly violent Blade of the Immortal, where samurai slaughter each other over what the right weapon and fight style is for a samurai, where there is little honor, and where after a yet another bloodbath the ones with guns win!

Yojimbo is the inspiration for “For A Few Dollars More”.
There’s also Rashomon a murder mystery with no conclusion. Honestly it’s brilliant.
Also Azumi, which is basically live action anime, but a great film nonetheless.
There is the Lone Wolf and Cub series.
47 Ronin which is based on a true story.

While not a direct Samurai movie, Azumii 2003 about kids taught Samurai and assassin skills until they were of age to be used, is an excellent movie. Yes, it delves into some crazy themes, and one very insane assassin who uses a sword with no hilt, because he NEVER has had to go on the defense with any person he has terminated 😂.
The Sword of Doom is so good, I would have placed it in the top three. The Ronin is a mischievous devil, but we find out that honor is nothing buy an illusion to many, and he exposes it so darn well. The part where: “Mifune” demonstrates his skills against assassins, puts fear and doubt in his skills as a swordsman… that was a thing of beauty. The way it ended was not to my liking, but I believe the director was planning to make one if not two sequels, but did not…
The Last Samurai should have had some love by you, but I know it’s not cool to like a modern version with the main character NOT being Japanese, but it deserved love.

Having seen the majority of the films listed, I'd have to say my personal favorite is Sanjuro as it was on a lighter vein which is rare in the Samurai genre, Sanjuro was the sequel to Yojimbo, and the "Nameless Warrior" theme was copied (along with pretty much everything except the setting) by Sergio Leone in making the "Man with no name" westerns that made Clint Eastwood's early career. The reason the narrator made references to space and galaxy when talking about the Hidden Fortress was because the two bickering peasants and mercenary helping a fleeing Hime was used by George Lucas in Star Wars. Little surprised that Rashomon was not mentioned although I guess its not technically a Samurai movie and more of a courtroom drama set during Samurai times.

What about Dora-Heita? Can't believe it wasn't included here! It was planned and written by the Yonki-no-kai, a group of four of Japan's most notable directors: Kon Ichikawa, Masaki Kobayashi, Keisuke Kinoshita, and Akira Kurosawa in 1969. But only got released in 2000. But a genuinely unique take on the Edo period.
I also can't believe Lone Wolf and Cub wasn't on the list!

Love Samurai movies and have seen (multiple times) most of these. What is fun is seeing (aside from Mifine Toshiro) the same actors showing up in these.
The Samurai I, II, III trilogy is really good at showing the personal growth of Musashi Miyamoto.
I saw 13 Assassins fairly recently and was amazed at the length and shear violence of the closing battle.

If we are suffering superhero fatigue, can samurai get a renaissance?
Actually...scrub that, Hollywood would only wither bury it or wokify it! Damnit Hollywood!

To be honest I believe these are all good. But you missed the very best samurai movie ever!!!
“When the last sword is drawn” is epic The Samurai trilogy was also very moving especially the final duel. “Onibaba” was another unique story. A great series was “Toyama no kinsan”
However, Toshiro Mifune was definitely the king of the Samurai role. Nobody else even came close!

I have seen many of these films. My favorite out of this list is 13 Assassins and 7 Samurai. Although this next movie I will mention is not technically a samurai movie “Azumi” I one of my favorite ninja movies of all time. Also the remake of “Zatoichi” by Takeshita Kitano. And lastly “Shogun Assassin” the movie edited from the tv series is a staple of my childhood and love for samurai movies.

When I see a top-ranked list, the first thing that comes to mind is, whose list is this and how were the selections made. I mean, don't we all look to see how our choices compared to the "experts"? Well it's a moot point. With that said, here are my comments. Why is only part 1 of the Samurai Trilogy listed? If anything, it should be considered one movie in 3 parts. It's a life story. As such, we miss the climax duel with Musashi and Sasaki. I'm also wondering why the 47 Ronin isn't included, not the cheezy one with Keanu Reeves but the 1941 classic? The story is epic in Japanese culture. That my 2 cents and for the most part I agree with the list,...sorta. Yojimbo #2.

Obviously AI-generated created, because of the 'repetition' of film excerpts THREE TIMES during the narration on a particular film.
True shame, especially if the person who typed in the title for Ai to create this YouTube,if you are Japanese, which I doubt.
Because having travelled, worked and lived in many countries in the world my two visits to Japan, found with out any doubt the Japanese to be the most honourable people in the world. Also as a British person, who holds a senior belt in martial arts, since the 1970s have had a great interest in Samurai films, due to Seven Samurai where i went on to watch all of the films in this video many times.
Thus to who tick the the AI app to create this YouTube by not reviewing, checking and ensuring which any video and professional film creator would do, you SHAME all those actors, film directors and camera crew who made these great films. Which you did for the sole purpose as sadly so many AI YT makers do for, is to extend viewing time to get more YT adverts and thus make advertising revenue. I know as I have taught IT to kids and then adults since 1982!

You nailed it putting with the movies you put in here. And while i think do think 7 samurai is an excellent movie. My favorite movie in the Samurai genre isn’t even here😂
Which is Azumi. The story is just very fascinating to me, How her mother was killed when she was just a child, how she was forced to slay her lover to prove she had what it took to be an assassin and then the moral struggle and she tries to balance what she is in her mind , up to the moment when she finally accepts what she is.. a cold blooded assassin 😂

Great list but still missing some unavoideble classics like the movies of the very director who started it all:
Yamanaka Sadao: sadly only three complete movies (1935-37) survived WW2 but those are still outstanding.
Samurai Fiction: the deconstruction of the sleak Samurai film.
Sleepy Eyes of the Dead: the sort of father to "Sword of Doom", 12-part film series about a not-so-much Samurai/Ronin, featuring a very bad upper class.
Punk Samurai by legendary director Ishii Sogo: wild fantasy

@Top List You left out When the Last Sword is Drawn (2002) better than a bunch of movies you mentioned. You also left out Sansho: The Bailiff (1954).
The best Samurai movie ever is unanimously agreed by critics everywhere to be Harakiri, an overall superior movie to 7 Samurai, which may be just better known.
Your list is highly subjective, but so are most others. When you say 20 Best Samurai Movies of All Time, that in itself is highly subjective and so are your rankings.

#5 Kagemusha, #4 Ran, #3 Seven Samurai, #2 Heaven & Earth(Ten to Chi) & #1 The Last Samurai. Anything with Toshiro Mifune and made by Akira Kurosawa is great. But my favorite character is Zatoichi, with Shintaro Katsu. I love all 26 movies plus the whole tv series, 114 episodes. I can never get enough of the Blind Swordsman. Don't get it confused with Beat Takeshi's 2003 film. That was trash. He wasn’t even blind. There are alot more great movies out there, but these are my favorites.

Seven Samurai is good but overrated. It's not even Kurosawa's best chanbara film. I would've chosen Harakiri as number one and would have included Chushingura somewhere in the list. And you completely left out the Lone Wolf and Cub series. Those were amazing! Tomisaburo Wakayama was an incredible force!

I have no problem with the list so far (I’m at 12). I take issue with the description of each film that is both generic and lacking in genuine detail. Probably AI generated. So far not once has an actors name been mentioned or their performance. Example, anyone who’s seen The sword of doom knows it’s a masterclass in acting from Tatsuya Nakadai that makes the film so uncomfortable to watch. Any mention? Nope.
Highlight these film, use the tools to edit and voice over a piece. Just for the love of Buddha write it yourself with opinions that are your own!

I wasted my money on the 3 Musashi films, the fight choreography is awful it looks like kids playing with toy swords and some of the drama was so overwrought, I gave up in the end. It's a beautiful looking film though.

Great list, except for 13 assassins. That movie is so overrated, and one of Miike's worst. It is so by the book and lack any kind of creativity that Miike is known for. It is very much the most commercial, and made "for western audiences" of his films.

I would not call Kagemusha a "Samurai film" as much as the others here; and also it was not as good as it would have been had they used Mifune in the lead part. Kurosawa didn't want to pay the money Mifune wanted. Too bad. Ran was a masterpiece though.
