This is simply awe-inspiring. I've loved this concerto ever since my childhood, when I first heard it recorded by Leonid Kogan in the 1950s. Since then, I've heard many different performances, but I've never heard a better one than this. While listening to it, I kept forgetting to breathe. Hahn's interpretation of the music is sensitive, thoughtful and courageous, her technical mastery is complete, and the orchestra keeps up with her both technically and musically. Wonderful!

Hahn's technique was already perfect when she was a teenager. The majority of her progress since then has been in her expressive quality and understanding of the music she plays. She continues to make new realizations about what music really means, what an outstanding person.

The production level on this video is outstanding. Major props to the team that captured the audio, filmed from all angles, and the editor that it all together who actually knew what they were doing. Always seemed to show the exact perfect tight angle or distant view at exactly the right time. The ultra tight zoom for the harmonics, the play back and forth between the instruments, the big picture view during the full fortississimo.... absolute excellence. Thank you. I truly enjoyed this incredible performance because of your work.

It's incredible how Hilary and Andres understood that Tchaikovsky was a prolific composer for ballet. The entire performance was incredibly graceful and truly terpsichorean, nothing was rushed just for the sake of demonstrating virtuosity - it was first and foremost presented like dance.

Größter Respekt an Fr. Hahn, Hrn.

Wowzah. That's the first time I've heard Hilary play like this. So many new things, and how she and the orchestra were in sync most of the time. The timing is phenomenal. The articulation, accents, musicality, etc. Kudos!

I have loved this concerto since I first heard it in 1965. I have listened to many recordings of it since then. This is, by far, the best performance available on YOU Tube. Hilary Hahn has captured all the emotion that is expressed in this concerto. Many thanks for the prividlidge of listening,

I never used to be a big fan but this performance completely blew me away. She pays so much attention to details and really plays with the tempo and articulation. And the best thing - the orchestra adapt this. Just listen to 34.34 and then the wind soloists! Incredible.

There’s freshness to her playing in every piece, every performance. It’s like hearing the music for the first time again - she manages to present to us something outside the clichés we’ve gotten so used to. Like 4:55 26:14 36:27 and many other points, where she really takes the time to demonstrate her own interpretations. Nothing more enjoyable hearing the great soloist be accompanied by such an attentive and talented orchestra.

I saw her at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at, I think when she was 13 years old. I've seen her many times over the years and she has gone so far beyond perfect technique but so full of emotion, color, and just simple beauty. I pay the violin, hobby, and cannot fathom how she and other masters do this - from memory. I saw her to Beethoven's Violin Concerto with Orchestra in D Major Op 61 and just cried. What a givt!

Then we have exponents like Hilary who transcend the ordinary and the mundane and elevate our existence to the stratosphere. Literally the most spectacularly flawless technique, not only in her left hand intonation but in her ridiculously amazing bow control, of all of the greats, imho. not always my favorite performance musically, although never anything to complain about, but she is always I swear like some alien being dropped onto this planet to demonstrate to all of us violinists that it truly is possible to play the instrument measurably perfectly over and over and over and over and over and over

Probably my current favorite live performance of this concerto on youtube. She's one of my favorite violinists of all time and she and Andrés Orozco-Estrada are really in the moment. Her tone - the brightness of the quicker sections and the warmth in the lyrical sections, their transitions between the slow and fast tempi within the movements, the clarity of her technique, the interplay with the orchestra, on and on - so fine. In the third movement, so many violinists make me feel as though they are in a battle with Tchaikovsky, like over-emoting actors delivering Shakespeare monologues. She manages to bring the thrills and excitement without histrionics. Truly a remarkable and individual performance.

Brings tears to my eyes. HH is amazing in every performance honestly. This concerto was the first concert I played in when our local combined university and community orchestra did it in the 1980s and suddenly I understood what a violin could do. I don’t even remember our soloist’s name at the time. It took my breath away and still does every time I hear it. I love the call and return between the winds, doing their countermelody with the soloist, never ceases to make me emotional. Those two flutes are impeccably in tune with each other, as well. They sound like just a single instrument.

The best Tchaikovsky recording out there! Hilary Hahn you are amazing. You’re playing is magical and is just so beautiful. You never fail to impress all of us! And that third movement! Don’t even get me started on how perfect and musical it was! Pristine intonation and interpretation all around. We love you Hilary!!

A high-quality, excellent performance of this piece, featuring Hilary that I have been waiting literally years for. And my god, what a performance. Hilary is more amazing with every passing day. The orchestra was stunning as well. Particularly some of those stand-out wind parts. So clear, and expressive. Anyone who doesn't appreciate what a genius Tchaikovsky was should listen to this, and all will be made clear.

That clarinet player — when he’s playing the back and forth with her, is FANTASTIC. Especially the delicacy of the softer echo - it reminded me of just the most delicate “plunk” of pebbles into a still pool (even in the middle of the energetic stuff going on around him) absolutely have not heard it done so beautifully.

Hilarys treatment of the violin is outstanding; the sound comes out so soft and intimate, still with the inner nerve in it. Also in more flamboyant passages is her playing marvelous! I have never heard this Tchaikovsy Violine Consert played better. So thank you, wonderful Hilary, marvelous orchestra and clever Andrés Orozco-Estrada! The sound uptaking is also fabulous.

Sometimes i wish to get some more dirty or excessive colours in her sound, but its her very recognizable style. She really emphasizes those parts, which many others oftentimes rush to blur, makes sequences more interesting and difficult chord progresses sound detectable. Her technique is just amazing. Would be gold to have her as a teacher...

I haven't heard them all but I've heard a lot. Right now I hold Hilary Hahn as the greatest of all time. She is at the center of perfection and what ever she does from that position is just joy, love, play, life, etc. Her base line is, I guess, what the composer dreamt about hearing.
Having almost perfect pitch hearing I really marvel at Hahns tonal precision. She is at about 98% perfect when other stars might be at 95%. Normal violin pro is around 80% which sound really good, don't get me wrong.

I love so many violinists and so many renditions of this concerto. Listening to Hillary Hahn is special and awe-inspiring because I hear her paying maximum attention to every s i n g l e note. Across the entire dynamics of the piece, every note gets more than the attention it needs. I still can't tell whether she has topped my previous favorite rendition by Christian Ferras, but I can tell you that I have never before had the feeling that every note counts as it does when Ms Hahn plays it. And beautiful they are, those notes played by Ms Hahn...

There is a very sweet moment at 31:21 where Andres is cueing Hilary's entrance, and even he, the conductor, seems very pleasantly surprised by the gliss in her entrance. I wonder if he was expecting to hear that and it was just better than he heard it in his head, or if it was a bigger surprise to him...

I've listened to so many recordings of this piece, but this is like hearing it for the first time, it's absolutely amazing! The impeccable articulation and the tasteful dynamics remind me of Benedetti Michelangeli, when you hear his recordings every single note is intended and researched and you can hear it! Many talented musician go through a process like this when studying anything, I'm sure, but very few are able to communicate it so well and take you on a journey with them...Hilary is definitely one of the greatest ❤

I love so much the conversational style between the main violin and the woodwinds. Everybody did a phenomenal job synching and matching tempo even when the dynamic is changing so often. A play of both imagination and discipline.

Miss Hahn is an inspiration to all musicians. I'm a guitar player/teacher and transcribed Bach's Violin Concerto in E major for my guitar class. I referenced her every chance I could during my teaching career. I have been playing viola for 24 of 54 years as a guitarist. I am now working on a violin and playing it in public. Always a pleasure to hear her each and every time.

Fantastic version of one of the greatest and best evergreens in classical music. The almost 10 minute long build-up where the violin is finally beaten on its way to the fantastic double presentation of the theme, where the roof almost bursts off the concert hall before you fly out over those Russian carpets... It's so magnificent and heartbreaking. And with the fantastic Hilary Hahn... love it!

As a young child of 5 years, my mother would go to Potchefstroom University in South Africa for vocal training, and I was put in the "diskoteek" with big ear phones, this music..1964.
For my tender heart...it was the beginning of my love affair with the violin, which I still play. It was in the heart of apartheid and it was a different life.

This by far, is my absolute favorite rendition of this concerto. I’ve listened to many renditions of this, and don’t get me wrong, all of them are beautiful, every soloist and person playing is amazing, but there’s just something magical, and different about Hillary’s. To me, it just has the perfect pace. It’s fast and exciting at the right times, it’s slow, and deep at the right time, not to mention how beautiful it all sounds. I just cannot get over how good the conductor, Hillary, and the whole orchestra did! It’s just completely perfect!

It must be great to conduct a great orchestra as Frankfurt Radio Symphony and on top of that have a superb violinist such as Hahn as soloist.
Knowing he has one of the worlds great orchestras, as well as one of the worlds greatest & most expressive violinists, seems to have given Orozco-Estrada great amount of 'joie de vivre', which seems to animate him hugely and thru' some kind of 'feed back loop', seems to energise the whole ensemble & soloist again.
Hahn & Orozco-Estrada have often worked together and both obviously enjoy it ✴✴✴✴✴

Bravissima!

It’s honestly incredibly difficult to describe to anyone that hasn’t played a stringed instrument how extraordinarily difficult it is to play the way Hillary did at 36:25…
Truly, it may sound pretty simple to play the same notes faster and faster, but the level of control over tone, in addition to the dynamics displayed were truly incredible. Makes it probably my favorite part in this whole piece in all honesty.

The thing about this piece is it’s schmaltzy yet has an off kilter quality in certain areas that it becomes a signature piece pushing harmonically towards the last of the 1800’s. With Hilary’s playing she brings an elegance to the schmaltz and an emphasis on the off kilter parts that makes this performance very special.

It is very clear that Hilary and Andrés through this consert take their freedom to change the pace back and forth all the time. For me this is why I can hear this consert in a new context, and therefore love it so much. This variation of tempi becomes an eye-opener for me, can it be played this way? Yes, and the way Hilary and orchestra under Andrés leading play this is for me some sort of a miracle.
Thank you very much!

The trouble I find with most performances of this concerto is the orchestra being out of sync with the soloist, particularly in the third movement, and it is usually because the orchestra is lagging behind the soloist. This performance is exceptional in that regard. Kudos to Conductor, soloist and orchestra for a wonderful performance. The flautist, in particular did an exceptional job with his solos in the 3rd Movement.

Whenever I listen to Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, I feel as though the violin is striving with all its might, running forward, trying to achieve something. It feels like it's climbing one step at a time, struggling but determined. And in those moments, the orchestra seems to cheer it on — saying, "You're doing great! I knew you'd make it!"
Sometimes, it feels like the orchestra is asking, "Will you really face such hardship? How will you get through it? Can you overcome this?" And then, the violin — especially when played by Hilary Hahn — responds, "Yes, I will overcome it like this. Even though life can be sad and difficult, I will get through it in the end."
So every time life throws challenges at me, I come back to this piece, draw strength from it, and go on. The third movement, in particular, feels like an explosion of passion — a triumphant praise for life. It moves me deeply.

This orchestra is beautifully attuned to the maestro, composer, and the obvious requests from Hahn to incorporate an almost unprecedented variety of tempi and dynamics throughout the performance. The strange tempi changes and unusual dynamics can be disorienting and make me feel like I'm losing connection to the composer and concerto. But these variations do indeed give us another valid perspective into the notes and phrasing of passages throughout this beloved piece, which we would not have were it played in the historically standard way.
My guess is that there will be those who love the almost bizzare variations in tempo/dynamics and those who cannot abide them at all. I'm not sure where I am, but I know that at least for me every note Hahn plays is as precious as platinum (I'm of the mind that she can do no wrong ever in her playing), and that the Frankfurt Symphony Orchestra has established itself among the finest on the globe. So I'm going to just "go" with it!

DANKE!

I... cannot believe that my brain was like automatically paying extra attention to the place where Ray Chen broke the string previously and thought how smoothly it went here without string break lolll I need to detox my brain about this string break thing lol. Thank you channel and thank you Madame Hahn for the beautiful and breathtaking performance, the lovely melodies, the excitement with speed up!! Every single note was so clear and with such elegant touch.

I’m not an expert on music or violin and I don’t play any instruments, but I’ve always loved classical music. I’ve listened to different Hahn performances on YouTube before. And I’ve listened to this concerto before a few times, I don’t think it was Hilary or maybe it was just an older performance? But something about this one from the very beginning was just different and I don’t know music enough to say what it is exactly. All I can say is it sounded prettier. Hilary sounded incredible and even the rest of the orchestra. This is the best Tchaikovsky concerto I’ve ever listened to. Am I right in saying that this performance sounds different and somehow more beautiful? I don’t know music that much lol so maybe I’m wrong but this is my favorite so far.

Of course that's the not most important thing, but I feel that it also connects to how she plays, too: refined elegance, delicate balance of sublimely expressive yet not over-the-top.

A brilliant, attentive, technically impeccable orchestra conducted by Hann, in a performance full of meaning, without isolated phrases and with a magical and inspired impulse. Notable woodwinds and horns in bare passages and difficult dialogue with the soloist. A dancer conductor, attentive and with an apparent participation in the tutti, from whom much more can be expected if he moderates his Caribbean tendency to move so much, as sometimes he can confuse the orchestra. Overall, a remarkable performance. Thank you!

Humans who put their hearts, minds, and souls to it can create such truly inestimable joy and beauty as seen and heard in this video, and so many others like it. // And yet, if we look around this world, we see the kinds of unthinkably reprehensible things so many humans are engaged in instead -- and in the name of what?! // The dichotomy is shocking and inexplicable beyond words.

She astounds me with her deep artistry, and as a perceptive commenter had noted, she plays her violin like a graceful dancing ballerina. Hahn has grown a streak of grey hair like Martha Argerich has. Two beautiful dame musicians greying out.

0:24 - Did anyone else do a double take at hearing the woodwinds hold the note for 2 extra beats?
I was caught off guard as this was the first time I've ever heard a performance or recording where the winds hold this last chord for 4 counts (instead of 2) before the strings come in with their 8th notes. Andrés Orozco-Estrada essentially changed that one measure to 6/4 before continuing on as normal!
I guess it could somewhat work to give the opening line a small sense of closure before all the build up of tension starts. Interesting interpretation! I think could appreciate it more if my brain didn't find it so jarring from being used to hearing the original version so many times!

"Despite its troubled early reception, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto has become a favorite among soloists and audiences."
"troubled early reception": 😎that means most part of supposed aware people have no ears, no heart, no soul. And the herd backwards ! What a mess, what an infinite emptiness inside their body, but what an incredible theater that to seem alive and capable of thoughts and feelings. Crowds of automatons like that seat on earth and rule the life of true souls.
It's up to you to daily choose and realize you can get out of the stage of evil !
Anyway, the assembly of soulless people & their dark shepherds still consider that Hilary Hahn doesn't exist, and connect to crap! Plato talked about it when he wrote The Republic ! CG

Poesía ; EL AMOR QUE QUIERO
COMO QUIERA AL MIRARTE ME GUSTAN TUS CABELLOS , PEINADOS , SUELTOS Ó ENRIZADOS .
COMO QUIERA ME GUSTAS TÚ , MI ÁNGEL DIVINO
Del CIELO. ENVIADO
ABRÁZAME EN LOS BUENOS SENTIMIENTOS DE TU CORAZÓN ,
ABRÁZAME EN TÚ AMOR
COMO SIEMPRE LO HAS HECHO
QUE TENGO MIEDO PERDERTE ,
PERDERTE MI AMOR,
PARA SIEMPRE .
RECUÉRDAME EN LA PRIMAVERA DE TUS SENTIMIENTOS
Y QUIÉREME COMO SIEMPRE ME HAS QUERIDO
QUIEREME COMO YO TE HE QUERIDO .
BESAME EN EL SILENCIO DE TU SOLEDAD ,
Y NO DEJES DE HACERLO VIDA MÍA
CIELO Y PARAÍSO DE MIS ANCIAS DE AMARTE
Y NO QUIERO NI PUEDO DEJAR DE AMARTE

At what stage do you realise you are that good? I put in my 10,000 hours and went on to gain a Masters in music, but never dreamed I could achieve these heights. A few years ago, Barenboim performed a complete cycle of the Beethoven Sonatas over a period of about 2 months in London (RFH). I believe he accomplished the same feat in Germany at the same time. The first concert included the Hammerklavier. What a great way to start such a feat!

Egon Wellesz is the centrepiece of 20th century Viennese classical symphonic music. Forced to emigrate to England in the 1930s, he became the symbol of a European artist whose status remained an idea due to external influences. This is the first ever recording of 'Music for String Orchestra op. 91' (1964).

Contrary to some comments made here, I find that the choices made by the video production have a lot of room for improvement, especially in the 3rd movement. The camera is too far away, shows Hilary from the back, doesn't zoom in enough in the finale. When it does the angle is slightly off. Even the orchestra is mostly seen from the back.

I dare the orchestral world to program concerts/concertos as such:
Overture or Fanfare
Short chamber piece - no conductor (musicians showing off their ability to do great ensemble work w/concert master)
Concerto 1st Movement

Hilary Hahns violin came from Russia. It was bought from Russian immigrants. It’s a Vuillaume- Czar Nicolas bought instruments from Vuillaume for his best musicians. I wonder if Hilary‘s violin was part of the first performances of this concerto? If only an instrument could speak and tell us about its past life!

Hilary is getting better with age - She has always had incredible bow control, probably the best in the world. But her downfalls were her lack of expression and unrefined musical phrasing.
Interestingly, I see nothing like that here. Age is causing her to consider musical integrity more than she has in the past. And she''s much better because of it. This is beautiful! All the best parts of Hilary came out in this concerto.

Wonderful sound and great visually. Not sure the conductor should be making me laugh, but fortunately the audience can only see his back so there are no chuckles in the auditorium (I'm not a fan of the Bernstein amateur dramatic style of conducting which can be distracting). But this is a performance worth returning to repeatedly.

When we saw this piece performed tonight in Denver, Co with Augustin Hadelich, the audience couldn't wait to jump out of their chairs and gave standing ovation 3 times before he stayed to play again. Here I'm amazed to see everyone sitting in their chairs after the piece ended. We couldn't stay seated it was such an incredible performance. Maybe it's just an American thing?

The orchestra was ecstatic over Hahn’s performance, but I don’t think the audience quite understood what was involved in pulling this off! The orchestra’s body language said “Thank you God, for letting me be a part of this,” while the audience seemed to be thinking, “Where shall we go for a snack when this is over?”

Ever since her early teen years, Hilary Hahn has had immaculate tone, intonation and tempo, none of which has lessened as she has gone through her adult career. A truly amazing, generous violinist! IMHO some of her most emotionally expressive performances have been with Andres Orozco-Estrada and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony - almost as if in her forties, she entered a freer phase of her professional life, for which I am truly grateful. Thank you for this upload!

I always wonder how first chair violinists feel when supporting someone like Hillary. Do they feel they are as good as her? Do they feel a bit snubbed or jealous?Or do all first chair violinists know that she’s in a league of her own?

Hello Hilary my great American prodigious sister will You be playing and playing and playing way iVan did and continuing to stick to the mission of austerity of giving away all the best one can have, all the way, so unquestionably, not even politely asking for anything little in tender silence keeping the fountain off for a moment or two, way the ancient sages of India did and the legacy of which I perhaps only have so committedly been bearing Al through, even without turning at least once around while all the other people have got engaged in their efforts of whatever they can take out of the tide and away... Best... Regards. 🤔🥥🌻

Can someone explain why audiences at classical music performances look as if they are at a funeral? Not one single smile on anyone’s face – just gloomy visages. Why? My daughter was a good classical pianist during her teens, and whenever I listened to her and her peers at concerts, I would be smiling from ear to ear, reveling in the sublime music – which is what I am doing right now, listening to this glorious piece of music in the privacy of my home.

This composition is good, however Tchaikovsky is merely the greatest composer in history, the greatest composer of the modern age has made better songs, angel of salvation by GALNERYUS is much better than this. GALNERYUS shall conquer this fraud in due time.

She plays so good this is a reality without doubts but the atmosphere especially in the Finale is not happy:everything including the conducting is heavy with just some tricky dynamic crescendo and diminuendo, or even worst "cedendo"..not very bon goût. Flat. Compare with the old old generation like Milstein it will be a nice experience.

I cant help myself but Mrs. Hahn from some reason plays the most "average" instrument among the top soloists. I don't know why she didn't changed her Vuillaume for something better, but it is as it is. Her instrument blends amazingly with the orchestra but it lacks edge and especially in Tchaikovsky it is powerless. She sounds muted 50 percent of the time. Even orchestra flute carries better then her violin.
