Facing Larry Bird for the first time was like being handed a crash course in humility. Before you could process what was happening, Larry had already told you how he was going to score, done it, and then made you feel bad about it. This was Larry’s World, and if you weren’t ready, well...he’d make sure you knew it. Let’s dive into the wildest stories NBA legends have about their first time facing the man, the myth, and the ultimate trash-talking machine - Larry Bird. Starting us off is Byron Scott. His introduction to Larry Bird was like stepping into a basketball masterclass on psychological warfare. His story is one of those moments that sounds like a myth but is 100% real. Larry beat em' all. He shot like Curry, passed like Magic, rebounded like Kareem and stole like Stockton. Transformed a dismal Boston team into a 3 time Champion. The toughest and most clutch player in NBA history. 3 consecutive MVPs, All-Star MVP, 3X all Defense team, Athlete of the Year and King of the 40/50/90 club. LEGEND!!!! 🏀 206 Reply 14 replies @Knape-vz5ml 1 month ago I've said it before and I will say it again, these are some of the best players of all time that are telling you how good Larry Bird really was. 78 Reply @garymacmillan 1 month ago I've heard these stories again and again but I still get a kick out of every one. 98 Reply 3 replies @Crackers2549 1 month ago He was my favorite player then and he still is...!He was something...#33 YES 44 Reply @mikeguerrero72 1 month ago I used to love this era of Basketball. Little do they realize that Larry made them all stars. 134 Reply 12 replies @IAM-zu9nx 1 month ago Best all around player of all time 36 Reply @keiththompson713 1 month ago As a rookie, Bird was ROY (63 votes to Magic's 3), and was 4th in the 1980 MVP voting. The next 3 years -- 1981, 82, and 83 -- he came in second in the MVP voting. He won MVP the next 3 years (84, 85, 86), was 3rd in 1987, then 2nd again in 1988. He was indisputably the best player in the NBA before injuries sidelined him in 1989. 54 Reply 8 replies @Higelac 1 month ago (edited) It's difficult to compare players from different generations. Bird's rookie stats: 21.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 84 percent foul shooting and 41 percent three-point field goal accuracy. But that isn't the story of his greatness. He was a TEAM player. He only took 17.8 shots per game. His team play lifted Boston from a mere 29 wins to a league-best 61 in just one season. 83 Reply 6 replies @Todd-jx9jr 1 month ago My only contact with the NBA now is watching these old Larry memories. 103 Reply 7 replies @alanwomack5055 1 month ago It makes my day every time I watch a video about Larry Bird and Ervin Johnson….Legend vs Magic…it gets no better than that. 38 Reply @chris93703 1 month ago "Chuck works for me in the summer. Prob Larry's fav compliment lol 46 Reply 1 reply @mikebunner3498 1 month ago I SO liked the head games Larry played with the the dudes. Karram Abdul-Jubar stated that Larry was playing chess, while everyone else was playing checkers. Bird talked smack! Then went out there and did it!!!!!!!! I saw one game where he had broken bones in his face. He left the court for treatment. The Celtics lead started to shrink AND Larry came back out to play! I realize that in the pros you must play when hurt. But his sprite was unstoppable!!! One heck of a shooter.... This time period was back when the NBA was fun to watch. In those days players played because they loved the game. They did not make a fraction of what players make today. NO DAMN wonder ticket prices are so HIGH!!! 9 Reply @jeffmejia3556 1 month ago (edited) Wilkins said it best. Back in his era they guarded each other. They didn’t duck each other. If you were around back then then you’d know they got fouls called on them too. David Stern turned it into a prima Donna league. Stars were guarded by bench players and no fouls were called on the stars. Early in his career I remember in the playoffs Michael Jordan being in foul trouble before the half! Imagine that? That would never happen today. 11 Reply @johnblasik9647 2 days ago 1975-95, this was the golden age of the NBA, I miss those days. 1 Reply @robertjordan4691 1 month ago I’ll take the legend on my starting 5 anytime. 54 Reply 4 replies @anitabell2833 1 month ago Larry Bird is the best 20 Reply @christophercucchi6048 1 month ago My starting 5 Wilt Chamberlain- Center / Magic - guard / Larry Bird - forward - Michael Jordan forward- Steph Curry guard 20 Reply 4 replies @DAVIDMILLER-nc9vo 1 month ago (edited) Larry Bird faked shots and passes better than any other NBA player. And not many players know how to do so, even on a limited basis. It's the most overlooked skill of most basketball players. And too many players never even try to develop that skill. 43 Reply @MrSports 1 month ago "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game I'd choose Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life...I'd take Larry Bird." - Pat Riley 309 Reply 38 replies @OttoByOgraffey 1 month ago I like what Michael Jordan said about him in this video. 16 Reply @lukasfontana7589 8 days ago I really want to think that when Magic heard Rogers' words, he spoke with Larry. Probably Larry said: "Well then. Magic just make sure you feed me the ball. I will take care of the rest!" 😂😂😂 1 Reply @captjack2112 1 month ago I was privileged to be able to see him during his prime period and something I will cherish and remember always. Mind blowing is best I can say 3 Reply @HHH-nv9xb 1 month ago I think Bird doesn't show his full capabilities. He only shows you what is adequate to get the job done. 12 Reply @garethrouse6161 3 weeks ago This was Brilliant! Merry Christmas one and all 2 Reply @phild8095 1 month ago Bird could have gone into any career and changed the industry. I was in the Garden when he scored his 20,000th career point. 21,791 points, 8,974 rebounds, 5,695 assists, 1,556 steals, 755 blocks, 3 NBA championships, 12 all star games, one gold medal, Several MVP's, rookie of the year, Space Jam and the McDonald's commercials Thanks Red Auerbach for getting him to Boston. 4 Reply 1 reply @paul-o2n8j 1 month ago larry was such a great shooter and passer that guys had to go for the fake, they couldn't just let him shoot, people naturally overlook his fakes but i was always amazed by them. 12 Reply @beaujones227 1 month ago Larry was the greatest forward in history. I managed to find myself in the Celts locker room after my class had moved on. I stood in front of Larry's locker for a few minutes looking at the jersey he was going to wear that night, thinking how great it would be to have a souvenir. I left the locker room empty handed. No Ragrets. 1 Reply @Poseidon0077 4 weeks ago One thing i liked the Most about LB, is he was not Flashy... all Business. 3 Reply @kolasom 1 month ago Gary Payton was the first running back in the history of the NBA. Not the same for some of the other HOFers. Not sure if the location of the HOF made any difference, but he had a hard time getting them to stop so he could speak. I was impressed. 1 Reply @buddystewart2020 1 month ago I mean, I'm not a basketball guy, but you just don't have that many great players talking somebody up if they can't play. You can put his skill set against Any player of any era. Whomever you pick. Will need career type numbers. To even have a chance. After loss to Magic in ncaa championship. He took his frustrations out on the entire league. 29 wins season before Bird. Took them to 61 wins. Still the greatest single season turnaround in NBA history. 2 Reply @Drfresh1402 1 month ago “I’d like to play you guys 1 on 2…” that’s a crazy request made to NBA players. 2 Reply @ShaunStaniforth-l8g 11 days ago When I was 16 years old I use to have a sega megadrive and I had a NBA game after playing as the various teams on game, Larry Bird was my best player. 1 Reply @TruthHurtzButHealz 3 weeks ago (edited) That dunk Dominique Wilkins did in Larry Bird's face was a crime scene!
