Denver Nuggets Super star, Nikola Jokic, has won 3 Most Valuable Player Awards, an NBA Championship, Finals MVP, multiple NBA First Team Member as well as an All Star 6 times. But, he can barely even leave the ground, so how is he this dominant?
In todays documentary we explore exactly that, and how the young Jokic developed these skills in the first place. We go from his childhood in Sombor Serbia, all the way to his most recent playoff struggles in 2024.
The "Joker" as he is nicknamed has dominated NBA legends like LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers, Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers, Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves, Damian Lillard of the Portland Trailblazers and many more.
Join me as we explore his incredible life and all it's ups and downs.

My family is from former Yugoslavia (my mum is Croatian and my dad is Bosnian). Firstly, your pronunciation of the names is really good, it’s nice to hear someone who’s not a native speaker of the language putting in the effort to try pronounce the names properly. Secondly, and more importantly, incredibly detailed documentary on Nikola! It’s obvious you did an incredible amount of research to craft a detailed story of how Nikola Jokic went from his humble beginnings to becoming arguably the best player in the NBA. Bravo 👏🏻

I think the real reason that so many fans deny Jokic's greatness is because his humbleness is so incredibly unusual in modern American society. We get confused and scared when a superstar athlete is soft-spoken, appreciative, and not on instagram. Not because those are bad things - it's just that we've never seen a top athlete/celebrity/influencer act modestly or in a way that shifts focus off themselves. It's just too unusual for people to accept.

The narrative that Jokic is this super super unathletic guy is just simply not true. He is not in fact slow there are atleast 3-4 free buckets the nuggets get every single game from Jokic outrunning the enemy big and getting a mismatch because of it. And he normally plays 10 more minutes than that enemy big, as well as 10 more games every regular season+deep playoff runs and still never gets injured. He is easily in the upper layer of endurance athletes and doesn't get nearly enough credit for it.

OK, there are the stats and the awards, but for me it’s Nicola’s ‘it’s not about me it’s about the team’ attitude, his humility and his focus on the team winning that put him up there with the greatest and makes him an outstanding example to all the young players and fans who watch the sport.

Jokić did something that no one before him did. At the Olympic Games, he was quite equal against the Dream Team, for which 4 MVPs appeared at the same time! The judges gave the Americans a wind at their backs so that Serbia was left without the final and the fight for the gold at the very finish! One against four...that's something to remember!

This is not just a documentary of how Jokic's rise. It's also tribute to the backgroudn people who made guided and believed in him, which is not mostly tackled with other documentaries. Great job with mentioning them and telling his story well.

I absolutely love Jokics game and attitude. He is humble, hardworking, and extremely basketball savvy. I love seeing him getting the love and admiration he deserves, and I love seeing him constantly praise everyone but himself. I know Serbia is proud but so are all NBA fans.
Edit: Forgot to praise 'Out of Bounds' for the fantastic video and phenomenal research you did. Bravo on this video, I've shared it with my buds and they LOVED it. Thanks for this video!

From being overlooked because there's too many other Nikolas on Serbian rosters to there being so many Nikolas in the NBA that you've suddenly got another reason to call him The Joker. One of one type player, I never truly believed I'd see be lucky enough to see the a player with impact the likes of Jordan/Russell/Kobe in their absolute primes, yet here we are.

Jokic and Doncic have insane strong bodies.
Doncic pushes off 99% black guards like rag dolls and Jokic outruns 99% centers while being the heaviest player in NBA.
Jumping is just 1 form of athleticism.

A small detail that I found while watching these games live is that in game 6 against the Spurs in 2019 the Nuggets were doing great while Jokić was playing and in a couple of minutes that Jokić didn't play in the 4th quarter they lost. I remember that well, because as soon as I saw that Jokić wasn't starting the 4th quarter I knew what was going to happen next, because I had already seen it several times before. I saw how they played with vs without Jokić. The other side of that coin is how Jokić lead them to the 6th spot in the West in 2021-2022 without Murray and MPJ and with a bunch of players that were out of the league by the end of the 2023 season and then even stealing one game from the eventual winners GSW.

Here's one funny aspect of his "zero athleticism" Not too many guys in the NBA would mess with him. Athleticism is not always measured by how high you can jump. Coordination and timing are huge. Being able to execute perfect passing and shoot over your defender by how your shot is released is a different form of athleticism. Dictionary definition of athleticism: the physical qualities that are characteristic of athletes, such as strength, fitness, and agility: Joker definitely has some of those at a high level.

Jokic may not be a jumper or sprinter, but he actually has great reaction speed, hand-eye coordination, and fast hands for a man who's 7ft. I believe those are part of athleticism too.

I'm still shocked when I hear people say that Nikola Jokić lacks athleticism. He's from the Balkans, and Balkans have people of the Dinaric type—of course, not everyone, but about half do. He’s similar to swimmers; in swimming, you don’t see many African-Americans because of body structure. Just look at how he pushes centers all the way to the basket. Nikola Jokić is truly one of the most unique players in NBA history, and we Serbs are very proud of his success because we prioritize the collective over the individual. We are a small nation, yet we have given the world Nikola Tesla, Nikola Jokić, Novak Djokovic, Milutin Milanković, and Mihajlo Pupin. Bravo on the outstanding documentary, full of details about Joker's past and present. Greetings to all the people of the world from Belgrade, from Preky ,,,,,,,Three Fingers

Im a football fan at heart but one of the nfls problems is patience!! Im glad to see not all professional sports and teams also have that problem!! Im sure other teams do have that problem, but this is just an amazing story about what patience can do for you!! Nfl teams are constantly shifting EVERYTHING around, even if people make it to the playoffs!! They never want to take the time to develop chemistry or trust!! Thats something you can not buy!! That play at 38:07 was dope!! Thats chemistry!!

Nikola’s game reminds me of Larry Bird if for no other reason than he has what I call sneaky athletic ability! He’s not flashy but he can manage to embarrass freaky athletes like Larry did! He’s got incredible court vision and an incredibly high basketball IQ! The biggest difference between the two is more their attitude towards the game Larry seemed to get bored because the game came so easy to him that he used trash talking as means to raise the challenge to himself! Jokic doesn’t seem to need that challenge like Larry did! Jokic is also a constant mismatch problem for opposing teams like Larry was! Jokic is a point guard in the body of a center! Larry played like a shooting guard in the body of a power forward!

Also, mad respect to Dejan, whom I watched play for my favorite club when I was a teen.

I dont understand why he is considered out of shape or overweight? he is super fast, agile and strong. Maybe its because of the undefined muscles but shaq never had them and he dominated everyone. Also out of all the seasons jokic got to be a candidate for mvp, the year he lost to fkn cry baby was a moment he deserved it the most. The NBA made the most shamefull decision possible. I hope they recieved a ton of backlash

The answer to how basketball players from Europe are outplaying NBA players is, in Europe they don't have as much athleticism as NBA players so they tend to focus more on fundamentals, and in NBA they tend to focus more on athleticism, but fundamentals are most of the time gonna outscale athleticism.

Funny don't you think, that Nikola Jokic the head and shoulders best player in the NBA and Caitlin Clark the same head and shoulders best player in the WNBA should have so much in common.
They both play absolutely unstoppable complete games, and both appear to be devoid of obvious overblown ego.
They score from anywhere, from under the basket to 3point+ range, basically anytime they want they make their own shots as well as assisting their teammates. They block, they steal, they score they rebound.
They have both taken bottom of the ladder teams and elevated them out of sight.
And both do this without a bunch of all stars in their squads.

His "lack of athleticism" throws opponents off their defensive rhythm.. His basketball IQ and lack of concern for individual accolades reminds me of my favorite player Manu.. Heck he even insisted on coming off the bench for the sake of the team.. I swear this guy will prosper, and will be a centerpiece of the organization in many years to come..

people often forget that in any given sport there isn’t a set standard for a physique or “athleticism”. it doesn’t matter how they look it matters how they perform so at the end of the day whatever shape helps them perform at their best and keeps them mentally and physically sound is what will win them games.

Wow. All I am seeing in my mind are comparisons with Caitlin Clark with the ability to read the game, to get other's involved, with people not accustomed to her passing resulting in turnovers, the unwillingness to run the offence through her, and once given that change everyone around gets better.

Saw this before. It happened in the '80's. The name's Bird and he did alot more than Jokic. But I hope Jokic (and Luka) kicks everyone's butt and maybe there can be a change to the conversation on how the game is played. THey have good fundamentals and did not suffer AAU.

It drives me nuts that there are people out there who push the narrative that Luka is the best player in the league. He is a crybaby, he holds the ball way too long and goes stretches without playing defense. Jokic is smarter and a much better all-around player. A center that can pass the way he can, not to mention affect the game in so many phases is something that you just cant duplicate right now. Easily the best and most complete player in the league right now

Jokic is the Zinedine Zidane of Basketball.
Like Zlatan Ibrahimovic said: „It’s not complicated, when he was on the pitch, the other 10 players became better. He was magical, outstanding, he was from another planet. I do not know if we will see the likes of him again.“

I am really tired of hearing certain players and former players being characterized as not being "athletic." Let me assure you that every NBA player is an elite athlete. You can compare their level athletic ability to other NBA players, but it is highly inaccurate to characterize any of them as having "zero athleticism."

As a Spaniard, I have to say that, if we count the ratio of population/good players, the Serbians are the best in the whole planet, closely matched by Lithuanians and Slovenians.
Yeah, I'm quite sure that as a national team, Spain is still slightly better. But in all fairness, we have like 9 times the population.
Now about the USA as a whole, they are clearly the best. But the gap is very narrow nowadays for a country of 330 million. Honestly, if they actually tried to play a little more like Europeans do, while prioritizing team plays and fighting tooth and nail for every single possession, they would be straight up scary, a complete nightmare to play against.
But instead, they are just a bunch of talented egos with superstar syndrome who are constantly competing for attention and are more worried to look good in front of their sponsors than to play the game. Not to mention that unsufferable cockyness unbeffiting of a civilized country.
And when you go down the ladder, if anything it gets even worse. Those from the G League are the exact same, but add hurt pride and the constant attitude of 'I want to get tfo of here'.
No wonder the 5 best players of nowadays NBA aren't even from the USA.

Hey man, this is my 1st time catching one of your videos and liked your work, so keep at it you have something good here. I believe that we should keep Miles. Yes, he had his problems off the court . But it wasn't that bad all things considering. But other than that , he's been solid as a rock for us . He's been one of a very few players that we've drafted that has developed, produced and gotten better every year. Other than missing those games for his mishap, the man has been someone we could count on and produce come game time. He's also a player that the guys in the locker room look up to. And was welcomed back with open arms upon his return. And he's expressed his desire to stay with Charlotte . I believe that we should pay him whatever it takes to retain him because it would be a travesty to see us let him walk just to watch him ball out on another team.

They changed the gameplay to Euroball making it easier for European players(not white because American white players weren’t the problem)in order to make the game an international game. It’s part of the same reason internationally, men’s basketball has caught up to the US as opposed to women’s basketball where the American women are speed running through the Olympics.

Strangely, the person who sold me on Jokic was Greg Popovich. I knew Joker was good. I thought he's be a solid second option, but doubted he had the athleticism to reach the top. Then after a game vs. the Spurs, Pop said something like 'Their center is one hell of a basketball player,' and I thought, 'Pop knows basketball better than I do, and it isn't every day he throws praise to opposing players.' That's when I knew he was gonna be really good.

Everyone says he can’t jump but his standing reach is 9’3” and he has a 17” vertical. Doesn’t sound impressive but puts his fingers 8” over the rim. He can dunk… his hands make the basketball look like a softball and so 8” over is plenty to drop it in. He rarely does it in games but he could… What good would more vertical be? Why does he need to jump any higher?

Jokic is the product of the current day nba rules. The nba created a league where the offensive players are given way more space to operate and way easier time to get to their spots. This in fact removed a lot of the athleticism out of the game to where the game feels like it's human darts. Jokic is not the only player who benefits from these rule changes. Curry, Durant, wemby, scrawny players would be injury prone their entire career and Luka would be a role player coming off the bench. Actually curry was injury prone in the early parts of his career. When you have to fight for your spot, you're exerting way more energy and this can cause poorer performance and/or injuries depending on how conditioned these players are.
Jokic is a good player playing in an era that hides his weakness. It's up to people whether or not they want to accept Jokic as an all time great when the main reason why they he's good is because of rule changes. Jordan was already dominating the league when it was allowing teams to physically beatdown their opponents.
The league that wants to make the game more inclusive by not gatekeeping it behind the athleticism wall. When more countries can watch the nba because their players are in it, it makes the nba more money.

Headline is pinnacle of ignorance and disrespect. I am not a huge Jokic fan but appreciate excellence and talent when I see it. Jokic has tons of athleticism and along with his strong physic and high basketball IQ and unselfishness, he is a MVP world class basketball player. I love watching basketball and every NBA team needs to deal with Jokic when he is on the court. There is practically no stopping him and if you focus too much on him, then he dishes to his teammates. Jokic plays a lot of minutes in the fast pace game of basketball and his great footwork and positioning work well and make him elite status. He doesn't need to be a high flier like Ja Morant or Westbook or Anthony Edwards. Jokic is 100% going to be in the NBA Hall of Fame and he deserves it.

More media BS. Exact same crap they said about Larry Bird. Bird was an immensely talented and intelligent athlete as is Jokic. The media for years has been overly impressed by what I call the super dunkers, and they're too shallow, lazy, and stupid to identify and appreciate the finer aspects of the game which lead to championships.

If someone wants an athlete according to their standards, Serbia gave them Novak Djokovic, the best tennis player in the history of tennis as well as a top athlete who brought his body to perfection. On the other hand, if you want a team player who would rather share success with his teammates, Serbia gave Nikola Jokic. The two best countries in the world in water polo that don't even have their own sea, Hungary and Serbia. Serbia has a total of 56 medals from all competitions, 36 gold, 7 silver and 13 bronze. Basketball, volleyball men women a lot of medals, shooting from air and small caliber rifles and pistols. All this from a country with 7 million people.

All of the comments describing Jokic as unathletic are idiotic and completely miss the point of what he's able to do. He plays with absolute control of his body and knows and plays within his physical limitations. His success is due to that and also the fact that he has great court vision and understands the game better than anyone else in the league currently. The fact that he is so much more effective than people who can run faster and jump higher than he can is a proof that "athleticism" can only get you so far. You need a brain, too.

False. Joker has improved his jumping skill a bit the last four years.
...And he does have athleticism. Exceptional hand-eye coordination is part of being an athlete, best passing skills in the game currently. Jokic has great stamina, that is also a key component to athleticism. He also hustles up and down the court quickly.
...Jokic also jumps very quickly. Gets many more rebounds by jumping to the ball quicker than players that can jump higher.

Larry Bird wasn’t very athletic either but he’s in the top 5 of all time. Personally I’d put him in top 3 if you really knew his game. I think he was the smartest baller too. You don’t need athleticism if you have supreme skill, fierce competitor & very smart. Jokic is very similar to Bird. And Bird & Jokic had quick hands & superb team ballers

He's a 3-time nba mvp....but:
We ain't playing Naismith basketball until we bring back the true center.
Hopefully after Europe; Euro-steps on our face, because we're playing Euro-ball...
Only five dominant caucasian centers, all time:
Mikan; Walton, Sabonis, Smits, & Jokic...!!!???
I understand that the nba is a business and the points bring the fans...it worked, it's global and getting bigger!
But dearly departed Mr. James Naismith (rip), "centered," the game around lay-ups & rebounds...!!!???
Bucks v Heat:
Bucks make most 3's ever (29 [Bucks win 144-97]). Heat would have still won by 15 if they went perfect from the line; went even on rebounds, and scored on every offensive rebound...not as crey as making 29 3pointers.
Idk what the Heat were doing that night (no hate)...
(every 2nd mvp trophy should go to Shaq [retroactively&posthumously {since Jokic has 3!}])
How can basketball pundits determine that Dr. Shaquille O'Neal's game-play is obsolete...and Jokic won 3 nba mvp's playing bully-ball?

Hulking lunk. Think Tyson Fury of heavyweight boxing fame. An aberration of nature. Whatever he is, it seems to be working. Problem is, the modern NBA a very distant
relative of the original game of basketball. Rules such as pivot foot, double dribble, traveling, lane violations palming no longer exist. Players start their move to
the hoop from the center line (jump circle) without dribbling, simply cradling the ball. You see two players on a breakaway running and passing the ball the length
of the court without dribbling. It has become an absurd freak show of genetic giants. It attracts fans but is only distantly related to the original game of basketball.

Also the rules were to help him.

When Mark Jackson did they limited the amount of time you can back down to about 4 seconds.
It makes a huge difference when you are the heaviest and strongest person in the game

Jokic is playing at ELITE level against elite athletes. Do you really believe he could achieve what he is doing with ZERO athleticism. Marathon runners are ELITE level athletes just as much as 100m sprinters and long jumpers. Running marathon is excruciating experience. Both physically and mentally. Just like Jokic is doing. Game after game, every single second. he has to be center, he has to be facilitator, playmaker... On both sides of court.

"Watched clips of NBA games and dreamed of playing... "
Nope. Just nope.
He dreamed of horse racing, wanted to do that and even quit basketball for good.. but his family made him stick with it since he was good at it. None of his dreams ever included anything basketball related.

So now we see, athleticism is not gonna get you there. Jokic and Bird are two of the VERY best EVER. Fundamentals, basketball IQ, and the ability to shoot will always be better. sad thing is, IQ and Fundamentals don't get the hype or looks at the combine. They look for vert, speed, and many of the things thaqt don't necessarily translate.

Lack of athletic appearance yes. Lack of athletic abilities??? No. The only ability in which Jokic is bellow NBA center average is vertical jump. He is top in strength, coordination and dexterity and above average in running. And then you have his knowledge and ability to learn and adjust to complete possible basketball GOAT.

Unathletic? You have track and field confused with basketball. Sure, in track and field whoever runs the fastest and Jumps The highest (Which in your definition is most athletic) is the best. But basketball is a game with strategy and team play And skill. There are also intangibles that can’t be measured. This is how great players like Tom Brady were overlooked and drafted 199th or how when the Edmonton Oilers had a speed skating contest, Wayne Gretzky was the slowest. Great players, like Jokić, Doncic, Bird and others have intangibles that make them great athletes who win.

To say Jokić is out of shape is a very superficial remark. That dude runs 40+ minutes up and down the court 2 to 3 times a week, with very few games he misses during the regular season. He is never injured like all the kangaroo players who jump like crazy for flash dunks. Joker weighs almost 130 kilos, so jumping high would be detrimental to his health. I bet he'll be able to walk painlessly once he finishes his career.

NBA have and still produce the best ballers but they all fall down because they are trained to be idiots and ref even allow star idiot to not play the rules.
That's why players from europe are coming in hard, european philosophy is about fundamentals first and when they find a monster, then, he come to NBA and stomp everyone. (Except the NBA player that has an IQ superior to 80 like Lebron or Curry.)
That baller mentality come back early, like in college game, all you see is a bunch of 1v1 defence, nobody play together because they are scared to give their shine to others... So stupid !

Jokic has OG Mentality and where he from they all been trained by the 91 Dreamteam blueprint they play by old school rules 💯 starts early playing grown competition. NBA so soft and weak rules Jokic just ball and do whatever he wants he knows NBA doesn't play real Defense so Playing in NBA easy there not real big men anymore. Realize Jokic plays like Legend Sabonis Sr. Only difference the Era of play 80's and 90's Real Defense Pride for the love of the game. This Era NBA so weak Jokic do wat he wants because Defense trash 🗑 and everything a foul and there more NBA teams now that have 7ft players but will play small ball so now it easier to run up stats and all the rule changes 😂
